The Thousand Splendid Suns Political Power
Karan Patel Arleanne Marquard English III September 8th,2015 Influence of Politics and Control on
the Individual Since the middle ages the influence of political powers had a great affection in the
major parts of the world. Political power is the power given to an authority in order to maintain and
control the behavior of individuals by several ways. Political powers could be either rule by
legitimate authority or under the political influence of corruptive force. In today's world, countries
with low economy have a higher risk of giving birth to corruptive civlization. Since, there's low
economy countries like Afghanistan are likely to face war as the corrupted force rules over them.
Thus, the novel The Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini gives a detail explanation about
how politics and control had a great influence on peoples life, ... Show more content on

As the animosity grew more between the groups, people of Afghanistan gets separated from each
other. The novel The Thousand Splendid Suns explains how one group rules over others created
destruction in peoples relationship. For example, in a quote from Babi There were plenty of
different ethnic groups in Afghanistan which create plenty of tension between them. In this quote
Babi states that a person should not be determine by their background since they all are humans
means they must be treated equally. No matter what cast or ethnicity you belongs to if you represent
the same nation that means you are united. During the time one of the Muhjahideen force Taliban
ruled over certain parts of the Afghanistan. In the novel of The Thousand Splendid Suns Taliban
commanders forced out the government out of the Kabul and takes control over the city. In a quote
from Rasheed. This quote states that when Mujahideens commanders takes over their city they were

1939- 1945 Were Possibly The Worst Years In American History.
1939– 1945 were possibly the worst years in American history. During this time, World War II was
occurring. Adolf Hitler was in complete control. He even went outside the battle grounds to wreck
havoc. He went to Babi Yar...the last place where Jews could hide.
Babi Yar is located in Kiev, Ukraine. During World War II, a massacre took place in the small town,
killing more than 1,000 Jews. The Nazis attacked them on September 29, 1943. Afterwards, the war
continued to rage, only to end in 1945. During World War II, Adolf Hitler rose to fame as the harsh
dictator of Germany. Hitler would then form his own army, then known as the Nazis. The Nazis
would go on to terrify Germany, then would go on to slowly take control of Europe. As most ...

"During the massacre, over 1,000 Jews, Soviet Officials, and Russian prisoners were killed. They
were executed at the Babi Yar ravine." ( The Einsatgruppen) The total count of people murdered at
Babi Yar was 34,000. The total count of Jews murdered in World war II was 6 million. This
massacre occurred towards the end of the war. Shortly after the massacre, the United States would
jump in to save the day! They would help the Allies defeat the Nazis and their army. Hitler would
still go on to terrify the rest of Europe after Babi Yar. The aftermath of Babi Yar is not a great one.
"It took over 6 years to rebuild Babi Yar and everything that was destroyed at Babi Yar. Many
shelters, homes, buildings, and personal stations were destroyed during the massacre. The Nazis
showed no mercy." (Hjelnguard, Kim)
After the massacre, the Nazis tried to hide evidence that anything ever happened by covering the
dead bodies with nothing but dirt and rock. The Nazis were convicted of what they tried to escape
with, and some were caught. They not only tired to hide the bodies with dirt and rock, but they even
burned them! When the remains were given to families, they were probably holding some stranger
that they never even met, instead of their loved ones. Shortly after the Nazis were convicted, things
slowly started going against Hitler and the Nazis. With the help of the United States, the Allies
defeated the Nazis in what

Hate Exposed in Babi Yar Essay
Hate Exposed in Babi Yar
Babi Yar, a poem written by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, tells the story of the Nazi invasion into a small
part of Russia, in which, throughout the duration of World War II, over one–hundred thousand Jews,
Gypsies and Russian POW's were brutally murdered. However, what is unique about this particular
perspective is that the narrator is not a Jew, but a mere observer who is aghast at the atrocities that
took place during the Holocaust. It is through allusions, as well as other literary devices, that
Yevtushenko elucidates caustically the absurdities of the hatred that caused the Holocaust, in
addition to the narrator's identification with the Jews and their history of oppression.

Perhaps even more of a travesty, however, is the fact that humankind has not learned from the past
in light of the fact that this "episode" is merely one link in a long chain of terrors.
Yevtushenko goes on to allude to Anne Frank, a young Jewish teenager who left behind a diary of
her thoughts and dreams, and how the Nazis strip her of any potential future she has when she is
murdered in the death camps. Clearly, the allusion creates images in the mind of the reader that
mere descriptions via the use of words could not.
Another effective literary device used in the poem is the first person narrative in which the narrator
identifies with those victims which he describes. This is seen in the case where the narrator says "I
am Dreyfus", or "Anne Frank, I am she." The narrator does not claim to understand what the
feelings and thoughts of these people are, but rather, he is acknowledging the fact that they are
feeling, "detested and denounced" and that unlike the rest of the world who turned its head, or the
Russians who actually abetted such heinous crimes, this gentile narrator can not empathize, but does
sympathize with his Jewish "brethren."
Another extremely powerful device used by Yevtushenko is the detail of description and imagery
used to describe events and feelings that are in both those whom he identifies with, as well as

Theme Of Education In A Thousand Splendid Suns
Throughout his novel, "A Thousand Splendid Suns", Khaled Hosseini explores the stories of
different young girls in Afghanistan, each with their own unique story. One of the main divisions
between each was their level of education and their families view on the necessity of having kids in
school. It seemed that there was a direct parallel between a child's access to education and their
goals and initiative for the rest of their life. There were also strong divisions between adults and
their views in educating females in school. Some parents were very open and enthusiastic about
their daughters receiving an education while others thought they belonged elsewhere and going to
school was a waste of time. The Taliban was a strong opponent to young girls and their educations
and did everything in their power to prevent girls from going to school or becoming at all
independent. Examining the importance of education from the perspectives of the Taliban, adults,
and young girls in Kabul at this time creates an image of suppression and brings into question the
motives of the Taliban's reform rules and whether or not they could have been meant to distinguish
the threat of educated generations weakening their power.
Young girls who grew up without much of an education seemed to end up as less rebellious and
more submissive towards powerful men. This can be seen through Mariam, the first main character
described in the book. Growing up she receives some lessons from Mullah Faizullah but her mom is
against her going to a real school and brushes Mariam's comment off when she says she would like
to go to a school with other kids. She says it is more important to learn to persevere. Mariam is later
married off to a wealthy man named Rasheed in Kabul. In the first years of their marriage Mariam
does everything she can to please him, cooking and cleaning all day so everything will be as he likes
it. She wears a burka for him and does very little to defy him in any way. One day her rice is not as
cooked as he would like to he takes her outside and "shoved two fingers into her mouth and pried it
open, then forced the cold, hard pebbles into it...'CHEW' he said...Mariam chewed" (Hosseini, 104).

Essay on Bahai Faith
Bahai Faith
The Bahá'í Faith proclaims itself to be the youngest of the independent world religions. Its roots
stem from Iran during the mid–nineteenth century. This new faith is primarily based on the founder,
Bahá'u'lláh, meaning 'the Glory of God'. Bahá'ís (the believers) in many places around the world
have been heavily persecuted for their beliefs and differences and have been branded by many as a
cult, a reform movement and/or a sect of the Muslim religion. The Bahá'í Faith is unique in that it
accepts the teachings of what they believe to be all the divine messengers, these are Abraham,
Moses, Zoroaster, the Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad. The faith believes each messenger is equally
authentic of the one living God. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The new believers religious ideas were based on the Qur'án, and believed that within the Qur'án,
that the prophecies of it were being fulfilled. Initially Islamic clergy saw the followers as "Muslim
Heretics". And from these "Heretics", the first phase of the Faith was laid down; it was to become
known as the Bábí Faith. The progenitors of the Faith were direct descendants of the Imams (Shiah
chosen leaders). Tension grew between the Sunni and Shiah sects due to differences in belief of
what leadership should prevail and rule after Muhammad's death. The first Sunni dynasty gained
power twenty–nine years after Muhammad's death, and at once began putting the Imams to death,
these descendents of Muhammad believed that it was them who should continue with Muhammad's
teachings and assume the leadership of the people. With the persecution of the Imams, Shiah
tradition says a young child, known as the twelfth Imam, was concealed to avoid execution. He was
then to be known as the 'Hidden Imam'. For a period of sixty–nine years following his
disappearance, the Hidden Imam was said to have communicated secretly with his followers
through arbitrators, who took the title of bábs (gate). With the passing of the bábs, the title was
passed on to a newly appointed one. The fourth and last báb refused or was unable to appoint a new
successor and it was therefore implied that the matter to be left in the hands of God. On May 23,

Mariam And Laila's Character Analysis
The novel revolves around two women, Mariam and Laila. The novel takes place during a terrible
time to live in Afghanistan, but things were especially hard for women. Their lives brought together
and are forced to live through unimaginable situations. At first, they didn't get along, but then a
beautiful friendship began. Their friendship would eventually be their salvation. They both
experienced incredible character development. Mariam and Laila's childhoods were very different,
which is explains their characteristics in the novel. Laila's modern upbringing gave her courage,
which inspired Mariam to take action in both of their lives. Mariam lived with her mother outside of
Herat and her father Jalil would visit her. She grew up called a harami – bastard, by her own mother.
Mariam's mother advised her to be wary of men, since Mariam's mother didn't have a good
relationship with Mariam's father. "It's our lot in life, Mariam. Women like us. We endure. It's all we
have. Do you understand? Besides, they'll laugh at you at school. They will. They'll call you harami.

This caused to become violent. He retaliated his anger towards Mariam. She had always had to
endure emotional pain in her life, but Rasheed hurt her physically during their marriage. Rasheed
from the beginning had a sexist and misogynistic view. He states, " 'I have customers, Mariam, men
who bring their wives to my shop. The women come uncovered, they talk to me directly, look at me
in the eye without shame. They wear makeup and skirts that show their knees. Sometimes they even
put their feet in front of me, the women do, for measurements, and their husbands sit there and
watch. They allow it. They think nothing of a stranger touching their wives' bare feet! They think
they're being modern men, intellectuals, on account of their education, I suppose. They don't see that
they're spoiling their own nang and namoos, their honor and pride.' " (Hosseini

The Dark Story of Babi Yar
Babi Yar
Babi Yar is a small place with a big story, but it has more to it than what meets the eye. In fall 1941
Germany took control of the city of Kiev, where Babi Yar is located. Hitler had ordered his Nazis to
"purify" Russia of all Jews. The first day they that they took control of the city they began to
exterminate it of all Jews that were living there. Everyone in the city of Kiev, including Jews and
Non– Jews lived in fear. The massacre of the Jews that lived in Kiev began on September 29, 1941.
On the outside it is a small ravine outside the city of Kiev, but if you dig deeper you will discover
that this forgotten place is the site of the biggest and saddest event in the history of World War II.
(World Book Encyclopedia 3). According to Shelia Stewart, Hitler's original plan was to capture all
the Jews and send them to Madagascar. The plan was soon dropped because Germany couldn't
defeat the British Navy. Hitler then created a new plan. The Nazis would force some of the Jews
who were able to do manual labor, such as young men, to work. The Jews that couldn't work, for
example older people, would be killed. After the Jews that were able to do work can't work
anymore, they would also be killed. (28–29). When Hitler's troops invaded Kiev they posted notices
in the city that stated, "Kikes of the city of Kiev and vicinity! On Monday, September 29, you are to

Justice In A Thousand Splendid Suns
Martin Luther King Junior once stated, "Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every
step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and
passionate concern of dedicated individuals", in agreeance that justice requires sacrifice, suffering
and struggle, Khaled Hosseini, author of A Thousand Splendid Suns writes about the struggle to
achieve justice amongst to characters. Mariam and Laila had very different upbringings, yet they
where destined to meet one another through a man, Rasheed, who disrespected women thus
advocating injustice.
It is clear that being a single parent is never an easy task, it is much more difficult when doing so in
a society that promotes polygamy because while most women have the help of many other women
in raising children and taking care of daily tasks Mariam's Nana did not. Mariam was raised by her
Nana, her father figure had little to do with her upbringing because he was preoccupied with his
many other wives and children. Nana raises Mariam with little to no help from the outside world
and at the age of five Mariam's Nana heavily impacted her views on men when describing Mariam's
father who abandons them she explains, "Rich man telling rich lies... And don't let him charm you.
He betrayed us, your beloved father. He cast us out... He did it happily" (5). The unfairness that
women face in A Thousand Splendid Suns is again demonstrated by Nana who was justifying her

Baha I Research Paper
George Bernard Shaw once said, "There is only one religion, though there are a hundred versions of
it." The Baha'i faith is one that would deem this statement to be true. Baha'i is a lesser–known
religion, but is still very important because people all over the world practice this faith. The origins
of the Baha'i faith and its connection to other religions, its main teachings, and the Baha'i calendar
are all important aspects that contribute to Baha'i today. Baha'i is considered to be an Abrahamic
religion because it is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. It originated in Persia in 1844. A man named
Sayyid Ali Muhammed, also known as the Bab, claimed that he was having visionary dreams and
was a prophet of God. He garnered many disciples, named ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The first of these teachings states that no matter what name is used for God – be it Allah, YHWY,
Ahura Mazda, or any other name – the Supreme Creator is one and the same. This is not to say that
the Baha'is believe in multiple gods; they believe that God is a single being. Baha'is think that
humans are unable to fully comprehend this Supreme Creator. The oneness of religion teaches that
all of the world's major religions come from God and are not separate religions. They are, in fact,
stages of the same religion that evolve as God sees fit. As previously stated, God is considered to be
unknowable and therefore has revealed His teachings through "Divine Teachers". These teachers,
including, but not limited to Moses, Jesus, Buddha, and Zoroaster, carried a message that was fit for
the time. Due to these teachers, humanity has advanced and evolved through each new religion.
Baha'u'llah expressed that the oneness of mankind is the most important teaching of the Baha'i faith.
This states that a person must first see themselves as citizens of the world before they see
themselves as a member of any other group. The ultimate goal of the Baha'i community is to attain
world peace through abandoning prejudice, eliminating extreme poverty and wealth, and creating
harmony with religion and science. It is also their goal to make education mandatory and attain
equality between the sexes. Many members of the Baha'i faith participate in service to humanity as a
way to spark these changes (Hosoda et al.,

A Thousand Splendid Suns
The titles of various novels hold important meanings that emphasize certain points of the story.
Khaled Hosseini carefully selected the title of his novel A Thousand Splendid Suns to emphasize the
happier of times in the lives of characters like Mariam and Laila. The author notes the fact that in
times of suffering hope is lost and yet returns to individuals in radiance. This concept of the lack
hope eventually leading to joy continues throughout the story, giving the metaphorical title a more
powerful effect. In Khaled Hosseini's novel, he uses the title A Thousand Splendid Suns to
emphasize the brighter moments of life, which were scarce to most characters of the novel to the
point that many characters lost the hope of ever having those good ... Show more content on

place in her heart. When hope was so lost Laila focused on the despair she had in her life with
Rasheed and stopped noticing the good times because of the overwhelming suffering. The scarce
bright moments however, had more strength and power behind them because of the characters' past

Babbi Yar Massacre Research Paper
Did you know that the Nazis tried to hide the clues that they killed thousands of people? On
September 29 and 30, 1941 the Nazis killed around 30,000 Jews. This massacre was called the Babi
Yar Massacre, which took the lives of innocent people. The Massacre was designed to kill thousands
of Jews and they would never forget this destructive event until they died.
Jews were innocent people trying to live their lives like everyone else was. They departed Kiev
before they were Germany's community so they could find a more desirable place to live. They had
to escape Kiev to have a quality life. If they were caught escaping there would be dire
consequences. Their lives were extremely unjustifiable. Whenever there were explosions at the
German headquarters, they blamed the Jews for the explosions. They were innocent and they got
blamed for something that they didn't do. The Jews had a terrible, wistful, and remarkable life. They
were obligated to follow the Nazis rules.
During the Babi Yar Massacre, thousands of Jews were killed while under Nazis regulation. The
morning of September 29 more than 30,000 Jews were crammed into large groups. They were

The Movement Of The Nazis
This passage clearly exemplified the mindset of many, as the hope they had had for a more
optimistic future was once again crushed under another regime. This was continuously a problem
under occupations of Kiev, government power made promises that were no longer able to withhold
and as a result of this, the would then be forced to endure horrible acts played out against them and
face poor treatment. With the realization that Nazi intentions were not what they had presented as,
many Ukrainians began to support the Soviets yet again in search of freedom from being under the
rule of the Nazis. An example of this explored in Kuznetsov's novel while discussing the movement
of Ukrainians to Germany to work on farms. Ukrainians were persistently encouraged to migrate to
work on German farms, which as actually driving Ukrainians into slavery. Originally promised
freedom and pay, upon their arrival in Germany Ukrainians were sold off as slaves as described in
the following quote: "They had been taken to a special market, where German farmers walked along
the rows of workers, picking them out, looking at their teeth, feeling their muscles, and buying them
up at the rate of five or twenty marks a man. They had to work on the farms from dawn to dusk,
were beaten for the slightest mistakes, and were occasionally killed, because such slaves were worth
nothing to them compared with cows or horses, which lived ten times better than the slaves.

Comparison Of Mariam In A Thousand Splendid Suns
In the story "A Thousand Splendid Suns", we follow the life of two different girls, Mariam and
Laila. They both lead two very different lives that spiral into two entirely different directions. They
had different education, different influences throughout their lives, and
One important difference between the two girls lives is their education. In the book, education is a
big theme in this story, especially surrounding these two characters. Thanks to the soviets, Laila was
able to go to a school and learn, something that was only privileged for men and boys. Mariam on
the other hand, was poor and considered illegitimate and not able to attend school like she wanted.
In the book, Laila states "Babi had made it clear to Laila from a young age that the most important
thing in his life, after safety, was her schooling." Laila's father, Babi, had always valued education.
He had made sure Laila got the most out of her chance at education while she could before it was
taken from her. After all, he had firmly believed that women could and should do what man can do
as well. Mariam's mother, Nana, never allowed her to go to school or bothered educating her. She
said how horrible school was and how learning was a waste of time. Though Mariam didn't see it
this way, this was her mother's way of protecting her from having the same bad experiences as she
had. Her intentions were good, but this only drove Mariam further away from her.

The And The Soviet Regime
Thirdly, Kuznetsov attacks the Soviet regime through its ability to present themselves as victims of
Nazism during the war. This is done firstly through the destruction of the Kreschchatik and
subsequent refusal of Soviet wrongdoing and secondly through the omission of Soviet liability. The
Kreshchatik was the main street of Kiev that housed shops, offices, and apartments. Following the
German invasion, near the end of September the Kreshchatik was set ablaze ultimately destroying
large sections of it. This act was carried out by Bolsheviks who wanted to deliberately provoke Nazi
barbarism against Kiev citizen. The Soviets were successful, as Timothy Snyder argues the
immediate after effects of the burning of Kreschchatik stimulated the Nazis to change their policy
from relaxed occupiers to violent tyrants. The bombing directly led to Germans ordering all Kiev
Jews to report to a specific location in Kiev where they were later led to Babi Yar to be shot.
Kuznetsov condemns the attack because firstly, this is a calculated attack against the civilians of
Kiev, demonstrating the barbaric tendencies the Soviets descended to. Secondly, Kuznetsov points
out the fallacy in the remembrance of the burning down of Kreshchatik. As described, it was the
Soviets who committed the acts but the Soviet state following the war presented the acts as German
doing. Due to this, the Soviet state has distorted history to make Ukraine look as if it suffered under
the sole hands of Nazis and

Laila's father had made it a mission to get her an education, even though Laila wasn't interested in in

There are several notable movements that followed a non–violent path and changed the course of

The Baha'is in Iran have suffered from persecution and hostility since the inception of the religion.
Despite the majority of Iranians showing no animosity towards Baha'is (Karlberg, 2010: 223), they
have been on the receiving end of a full range of human rights abuse such as execution, torture,
imprisonment without trial, social and economic exclusion, seizure of property and assets and
desecration of holy places and gravesites.
Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 there has been a renewed wave of anti–Baha'i persecution and
violence (Karlberg, 2010: 223), the severity of which attracted the attention of the world – alerting
the global media, various agencies of the U.N., human rights movements and civil society both
within Iran and it's diaspora, calling their attention to the plight of the Baha'is. These on–going
campaigns most certainly have shed light on the matter and lead to an increasing interest on the
fundamental verities of a new Faith that seeks unity and justice. The focus of this essay is to assess
the response of the Iranian Baha'I community to persecution in a way that is

A Thousand Splendid Suns
Born Of This Same Dust
Afghanistan has had a long history of leadership and war, three decades of which are covered in
Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns. His novel covers the start of the communist regime in
Afghanistan in the early 1970s to the temporary peacetime around 2003. In that short time, a
monarchy is overthrown, the Soviet Union gains control, rebels drive them out, the rebels rise to
power and are driven out of the country. Afghanistan gets caught in a never ending spiral of
colonialism and post–colonialism. While this all looks flat on paper, Hosseini brings the post–
colonial problems of government, nationalism and culture straight to the reader by presenting the
conflicts through the lives of their citizens. By doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Babi, despite knowing better, was reluctant to leave Kabul. Babi tells Laila, "I went to school here,
got my first job here, became a father in this town. It's strange to think that I'll be sleeping beneath
another city's skies soon" (Hosseini 172). I think Hosseini included this sentiment to invoke
sympathy. Imagine that you had to leave the place where you grew up to possibly never return. It's
an unsettling thought. The fact that we understand the love people have for their country is an
important feature to post–colonial literature. Nothing explains it better than Laila's need to return to
Afghanistan during the decline of the

The Message of Hate in Babi Yar Essay
The Message of Hate in Yevgeny Yevtushenko's Babi Yar
There are very few people in the world who are willing to go against the popular trends and do what
they feel in their hearts is correct. But Yevgeny Yevtushenko is one of those people. In his poem
Babi Yar, he tells the story of the modern persecution of the Jews, focusing on atrocities like those
of the massacre at Babi Yar and the pogroms at Beilostok, and also the general anti–Semitism that
killed men like Dreyfus and pervades the entire Russian people. The poem uses many literary
devices, such as graphic imagery and contrasts, while painting a very clear picture of the scenes of
pure horror.
Babi Yar is written in many different voices, all of which, however, have ... Show more content on

He says that he too must be a Jew for he is afraid of what his people and his society have become.
Many years ago, in the "ancient days," it would not be such a shock to see the Jews enslaved in
Egypt or crucified as a means of torture and death, but even in modern times the same things are
going on–he still has the marks from where the nails pierced him. The author has used classical
examples of Jewish persecution which every one knows is gone in the physical sense, but show how
they still exist in the theoretical aspect, as the persecution is still occurring.
In the next three stanzas, the poem takes the standpoint of three figures whose stories are pertinent
examples of what Yevtushenko is trying to rely in this poem. First the voice of Dreyfus is used, and
the stanza describes how horribly and unfairly he was treated, and how the country and its leaders
turned their backs on him.
There are two important literary devices used in this section. First the author puts the word
"pettiness" on a line by itself. This is used as a declaration of what the author feels anti–Semitism is
based on. It is because of pettiness that Dreyfus was accused and further because of pettiness that he
was not pardoned when it was proven that he had not committed any crime. The next important
device is the description of ladies with their umbrellas. This is an image to the wealthy

Examples Of Sacrifice In A Thousand Splendid Suns
A Sacrifice Worth A Thousand Splendid Suns In the novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns" written by
Khaled Hosseini, the parents make many sacrifices in order to protect their families. The parents had
to endure separation from their children to provide them with a better life during the horrific events
occurring as a result of the war. Some of the sacrifices the parents made weren't always the best
decision to make. Three parents that made sacrifices for either themselves or their children were
Laila, Babi, and Jalil.
Laila was a child that suffered the loss of both her parents due to the war. She was left with no
home, no family, and no friends until Rasheed and Mariam took her into their home and cared for
her. At the time, no one knew Laila

Kelia In A Thousand Splendid Suns
In A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, Hakim's character is set as the backbone of
Laila's strength, personality, and continued education. Babi put the ideas in Laila's head that she
could do anything she set her mind to.
Without Hakim's parenting, intelligence, and tolerance, Laila would not have been nearly as
educated, strong–willed, or opinionated. He developed the woman Laila grew up to be; his
enthusiasm for education, promotion of gender equality, and intense passion for all things literary,
didactic, or enlightening. Many of the male figures in Afghanistan at this time taught the women
caught in the trap of oppression to be meek and submissive.
However, Babi raised Laila to believe she could be anything or anyone she ever dreamed

Essay On The Babi Yar Massacre
Many People have all experienced something very tragic, but have we ever felt the pain of a Jew
after Hitler brought them down? Then, eight years later the Babi Yar Massacre happened which
killed millions of people (mostly Jews). That is A lot of jews that lost their lives for just being jews.
At the time no one liked jews which is very heartbreaking. Some Jews survived other Jews died.
Very few Jews lived through this crisis. "On January 30,1941 the eighth anniversary of Adolf Hitler

Comparing My Forbidden Face 'And' A Thousand Splendid Suns
After reading both of these books, I can admit that they may have placed a lasting impact on my
life.
To read about people that grew up around so much war and to hear of the abusive groups is
astounding. I have learned about the Taliban growing up, I know that they are terrible, but to read
from this perspective it shines a light on the reality of how awful they really are. To read this book
and to see the progression of these groups and to see how they solidify their power is insane. Their
power just continued to grow, and when that happens with these extremist groups, you know that
only the worst is to come.

One thing that was said during this time really stuck with me, I believe
Mariam said, " A man's heart is a wretched, wretched thing. It isn't like a mother's womb. It won't

Rasheed showed. He was cold.
Almost as cold, if not as cold, as the members of the Taliban.
Reading My Forbidden Face was harder. It was a more intense read for me. Latifa paid a lot of
attention to detail and reading about the Taliban in this story made my heart ache. The story begun
with the Taliban already in the city, unlike the other book, and to make it even more gruesome, it
began with the death of President Najibullah.
I feel like that scene really set the mood for the book. Latifa had to give up so much, she fell ill,
along with her mother who completely degressed throughout the whole book. My favorite quote
from this entire book was, " True, rockets aren't raining down on us anymore, but the city is
drowning in a deathly silence." To read this and to feel it is a slap in the face. Yes, they are safe from
the rockets, they aren't in harms way, yet after all the hardships that they have faced over these
years, things just can't spring right back into place. They

The And The Nazi Occupation Of Kiev During The World War...
Throughout the twentieth century, the city of Kiev was occupied by various governments, notably
the Soviet and the Nazi regimes, during the Second World War. The German army successfully
conquered Kiev on September 21st, 1941, after Soviet forces withdrew. Immediately upon German
occupation, the planning for eliminating the Jewish population from Kiev began, and was shortly
after conducted at the Massacre of Babi Yar, where it has been estimated that any number between
33,771 to 150,000 Jews were murdered. Despite Babi Yar's involvement in the Holocaust, the events
which occurred at Babi Yar were relatively neglected in the studies about the Holocaust. The novel
Babi Yar: A Document in the Form of a Novel (1970) by A. Antoli (Kuznetsov) has acted as one of
few resources which has addressed the massacre of Jews at Babi Yar, as well as the horrific Nazi
occupation of Kiev during the Second World War. Kuznetsov was twelve years old upon the Nazi
occupation of Kiev and recorded his experience, as well as the experiences of others who survived.
The novel has brought light to the oppressive and barbaric nature of the Nazi rule of Kiev which
lasted for 778 days. Furthermore, the uncensored version has disclosed how the people living within
Kiev acted during the period of Nazi occupation. Prior to this release, Soviet rule had not allowed
for any release of information disclosing the massacre of Jews within Kiev during the Second World

Comparing Islam And Baha ' I And Islam
It's incredible how two religions can be so different yet so similar. Whether it be the various
branches of Christianity, the Chinese religions, or even Judaism and Islam, they have so much in
common when you work down to the roots of the religions. For starters, I will be comparing Islam
and Baha'i. Part of the reason that Baha'i and Islam are so similar is because Baha'i gets its start
from some of the base beliefs of Islam. Some of the similarities between the two are the fact that
both have obligatory prayers. With Islam, a believer would pray five times a day. They pray at
daybreak, noon, mid–afternoon, sunset, and evening. When Muslims do their prayers, there are
specific movements and gestures involved. Also they must face Mecca, ... Show more content on

The Islamic faith has taken a firm stance on their belief of Baha'i. They take the teachings of the
Baha'i religion as the teachings of heretics. Muslims have ridiculed, persecuted, and executed
followers of this faith since 1850, when they executed the Bab.
The similarities of these two religions are uncanny. They are so closely related, and the differences
seem so miniscule, at least to the eye of an outsider looking in. When it come to the prayer life of
members of the two religions, they are almost identical. They both pray multiple times a day, prayer
is obligatory for both, there are movements and gestures to go along with the prayers, the prayers
are done facing a certain location, either Mecca or Qiblih, and they are both rooted from the same
region in the world. In all reality the only major difference causing these two religions to tear each
other apart, is what they believe about the manifestation of Allah. Other than that they are both
monotheistic, follow teachings from the prophet Mohammad, and have a regulated form of prayer
for members of the religion to follow. So like I said at the start, like any religion and/or its branches,
they can be practically identical, but so very different at the same time.
There are three major monotheistic religions still in practice today. They are Islam, Judaism, and

Symbolism In The White Hotel
Representation of history in D. M. Thomas' novel The White Hotel At first, when I started to read
the novel The White Hotel written by D.M. Thomas, I had the feeling that this novel is so vain and
down to earth, gray, and the parts with letters are so boring. I was ashamed of myself that I didn't
appreciate this book. Then when I came to the parts with erotic poems the disgust captured me and I
wanted to throw this book away from me. But the part that (invoked the most emotions)(touched my
feelings the most) is chapter five. I wanted to cry, I wanted to throw up, I wanted to forget about this
book. I was questioning the world, I am living in, the notion of being a human, the sanity of the
society of the previous century. This chapter V that describes the disgusting, Insane, horrifying

A Thousand Splendid Suns Father Son Relationship Analysis
The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is split into four sections. In Part I of the
novel, it was told from Mariam's third person point of view. Part II shifts to the perspective of Laila,
who is growing up in Kabul not far from Rasheed and Mariam's house, but who is getting an
education thanks to her progressive father, Babi. After a nine–year jump and a shift of perspective,
we have left the realm of a husband's brutality to enter that of a close family relationship. "She was
a pari, a stunner, Mammy said. Her beauty was the talk of the valley. It skipped two generations of
women in our family, but it sure didn't bypass you, Laila" (Hosseini 108). In addition, the
description of Laila's physical beauty contrasts with the earlier description of Mariam's plainness,

In addition, however, Soviet norms about women's rights are progressive, even allowing girls to

Was Hitler Responsible For The Holocaust Essay
In spite of Adolf Hitler's critical role in the Holocaust, he was not directly responsible for the
majority of the horrors that the events created.
All of Germany had a solid reason for the persecution, if not extreme terrors that it included. After
the conclusion of World War One and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was launched
into a massive depression that devastated the country. Those who are suffering are bound to reach a
state of anger at some point, and at the beginning they were right to feel this sentiment. The
neighboring nations had set unfair and cruel requirements for Germany in the Treaty of Versailles,
which ruined their economy, resulting in massive inflation and extreme poverty. Thus, Germany was

Gender Roles In A Thousand Splendid Suns
How well does the book portray contemporary gender roles? The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns
does portray contemporary gender roles. The novel shows how an Afghan woman must look, how
each gender is supposed to act and the difference in social status for each of the genders in more
oppressive views. The novel certainly demonstrates where a women's place is against a man's, and
how men are regarded higher than women in society. Through Babi the ideas that come through
when Mohammad Saoud came to power in 1973 are shown, that women should be equal to men as
he believes that education is a very important asset in society, even for women. This reflects the
ideas that come forward at the time, such as the education of all children and women's rights to
employment. This Is certainly reflected in the way that Babi treats his daughter Laila, by allowing
her to go to school and saying 'Marriage can wait, education cannot'. Though society was moving

of German SS and police personnel (ushmm.org)". "Using a list compiled by the RSHA ... Show

"In the late summer of 1941, Heinrich Himmler requested that a more convenient mode of killing be
developed (ushmm.org)". "Therefore, the gas van had been made (ushmm.org)". "The gas van was a
mobile gas chamber surmounted on the chassis of a cargo truck which employed carbon monoxide
from the truck's exhaust to kill its victims (ushmm.org)". "Gas vans had made their appearance in
the late fall of 1941 and were used wherever the Einsatzgruppen operated (ushmm.org)". Although I
did not read where they took the vans, I am guessing that they traveled from town to town searching
for Jews. There was probably a set number of gas vans that were assigned a certain area to "attack"
so that they could cover more ground. "Two different types of gas vans had been built: a larger one,
5.8 meters in length, and a smaller one, measuring 4.5 meters (Levine, jewishvirtuallibrary.org)".
"When densely packed, the small van could hold 80 to 100 people and the larger van could
accommodate between 130 and 150 people (Levine, jewishvirtuallibrary.org)". "The gas van
resembled an ambulance or refrigerator truck and contained a hermetically sealed rear cabin
(Levine, jewishvirtuallibrary.org)". The rear cabin was where the Jews were stored and where the
gas had been released. "During the time at which people were being gassed, the van was driven
from the loading site to the prepared graves (Levine, jewishvirtuallibrary.org)". "This process had
taken between fifteen and thirty minutes (Levine, jewishvirtuallibrary.org)". "Although when the
gassing happened, it generally wasn't carried out correctly. In order to get the action finished as
quickly as possible, the driver presses down on the accelerator as far as it will go (Levine,
jewishvirtuallibrary.org)". "As a result, the persons to be executed die of suffocation and don't doze
off as planned (Levine, jewishvirtuallibrary.org)". "It has proved

A Thousand Splendid Suns By Khaled Hosseini
A Thousand Splendid Suns Essay
A Thousand Splendid Suns, a book written by Khaled Hosseini, gives us a unique and informative
glimpse into life in Afghanistan in the early 1960's to the 2000's. In it we can see many different
political and social issues ravaging the country, with the most evident being gender inequality.
Though many diverse groups of people were being discriminated against at the time, most of the
subordination fell onto women as they had more and more rights taken away from them when
various ruling powers took control. The author relays this information to us and educates us as to
what happened through compelling and thought–provoking literary devices such as symbolic
characters and objects, and allusions. By using these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because a society has no chance of success if its women are uneducated, Laila. No chance"
(Hosseini 114). This demonstrates just how pro women's rights Babi was, as he not only believed in
education for females and the idea that arranged marriages at young ages are wrong, but also that
women could be the ones to make the country strong again, not men. Because of his beliefs, you can
assume Babi represented the Soviet government that administered over Afghanistan at the time.
Later into the book though, Babi ends up passing away in a terribly violent way, which to me
represents the collapse of the soviet union (which happens around the same time as his death) by the
violent hands of the Mujahideen. After his death, Laila then ends up living under the authority of a
dangerous and brutal male, Rasheed, who represents the new Mujahideen government that took
control. Rasheed had very conservative views, as seen when he warned the girls to obey his every
word, not leave the house without him, and always wear a Burqa. All the things he asked them to do
were the policies the new Mujahideen government set into place, restricting women 's rights.
By including this hidden meaning behind the characters, Hosseini actually uses them as a way to
give perspective as to just how oppressive the Mujahideen actually was, and how much of a shock it
must have been to women. From Babi you can see how Afghanistan was at one time a good place
for women

Babi In A Thousand Splendid Suns
A parent is a father or mother or as otherwise may be defined by statutes such as through adoption
or same–sex relationships. Also, the controlling corporation of another. In the book, A Thousand
Splendid Suns the superior parent is Babi. Babi is characterized as an authoritative parent towards
Lalia. He had the optimal interest of Lalia, supported her education, cherished her, and more than
meets the eye. When Khaled Hosseini killed Babi in the book via bomb, he created a despondent
emotion for the reader to experience the emotions Laila felt of his passing. One of the first examples
of Babi's authoritative character as a parent is shown within the first pages of his introduction when
he was talking to Laila about the screen door tear and

The Thousand Splendid Suns Political Power

  • 1. The Thousand Splendid Suns Political Power Karan Patel Arleanne Marquard English III September 8th,2015 Influence of Politics and Control on the Individual Since the middle ages the influence of political powers had a great affection in the major parts of the world. Political power is the power given to an authority in order to maintain and control the behavior of individuals by several ways. Political powers could be either rule by legitimate authority or under the political influence of corruptive force. In today's world, countries with low economy have a higher risk of giving birth to corruptive civlization. Since, there's low economy countries like Afghanistan are likely to face war as the corrupted force rules over them. Thus, the novel The Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini gives a detail explanation about how politics and control had a great influence on peoples life, ... No matter what cast or ethnicity you belongs to if you represent the same nation that means you are united. • 2. 1939- 1945 Were Possibly The Worst Years In American History. 1939– 1945 were possibly the worst years in American history. During this time, World War II was occurring. Adolf Hitler was in complete control. He even went outside the battle grounds to wreck havoc. He went to Babi Yar...the last place where Jews could hide. Babi Yar is located in Kiev, Ukraine. During World War II, a massacre took place in the small town, killing more than 1,000 Jews. The Nazis attacked them on September 29, 1943. Afterwards, the war continued to rage, only to end in 1945. During World War II, Adolf Hitler rose to fame as the harsh dictator of Germany. Hitler would then form his own army, then known as the Nazis. The Nazis would go on to terrify Germany, then would go on to slowly take control of Europe. As most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "During the massacre, over 1,000 Jews, Soviet Officials, and Russian prisoners were killed. They were executed at the Babi Yar ravine." ( The Einsatgruppen) The total count of people murdered at Babi Yar was 34,000. The total count of Jews murdered in World war II was 6 million. This massacre occurred towards the end of the war. Shortly after the massacre, the United States would jump in to save the day! They would help the Allies defeat the Nazis and their army. Hitler would still go on to terrify the rest of Europe after Babi Yar. The aftermath of Babi Yar is not a great one. "It took over 6 years to rebuild Babi Yar and everything that was destroyed at Babi Yar. Many shelters, homes, buildings, and personal stations were destroyed during the massacre. The Nazis showed no mercy." (Hjelnguard, Kim) After the massacre, the Nazis tried to hide evidence that anything ever happened by covering the dead bodies with nothing but dirt and rock. The Nazis were convicted of what they tried to escape with, and some were caught. They not only tired to hide the bodies with dirt and rock, but they even burned them! When the remains were given to families, they were probably holding some stranger that they never even met, instead of their loved ones. • 3. Hate Exposed in Babi Yar Essay Hate Exposed in Babi Yar Babi Yar, a poem written by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, tells the story of the Nazi invasion into a small part of Russia, in which, throughout the duration of World War II, over one–hundred thousand Jews, Gypsies and Russian POW's were brutally murdered. However, what is unique about this particular perspective is that the narrator is not a Jew, but a mere observer who is aghast at the atrocities that took place during the Holocaust. It is through allusions, as well as other literary devices, that Yevtushenko elucidates caustically the absurdities of the hatred that caused the Holocaust, in addition to the narrator's identification with the Jews and their history of oppression. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perhaps even more of a travesty, however, is the fact that humankind has not learned from the past in light of the fact that this "episode" is merely one link in a long chain of terrors. Yevtushenko goes on to allude to Anne Frank, a young Jewish teenager who left behind a diary of her thoughts and dreams, and how the Nazis strip her of any potential future she has when she is murdered in the death camps. Clearly, the allusion creates images in the mind of the reader that mere descriptions via the use of words could not. Another effective literary device used in the poem is the first person narrative in which the narrator identifies with those victims which he describes. This is seen in the case where the narrator says "I am Dreyfus", or "Anne Frank, I am she." The narrator does not claim to understand what the feelings and thoughts of these people are, but rather, he is acknowledging the fact that they are feeling, "detested and denounced" and that unlike the rest of the world who turned its head, or the Russians who actually abetted such heinous crimes, this gentile narrator can not empathize, but does sympathize with his Jewish "brethren." Another extremely powerful device used by Yevtushenko is the detail of description and imagery used to describe events and feelings that are in both those whom he identifies with, as well as ... • 4. Theme Of Education In A Thousand Splendid Suns Throughout his novel, "A Thousand Splendid Suns", Khaled Hosseini explores the stories of different young girls in Afghanistan, each with their own unique story. One of the main divisions between each was their level of education and their families view on the necessity of having kids in school. It seemed that there was a direct parallel between a child's access to education and their goals and initiative for the rest of their life. There were also strong divisions between adults and their views in educating females in school. Some parents were very open and enthusiastic about their daughters receiving an education while others thought they belonged elsewhere and going to school was a waste of time. The Taliban was a strong opponent to young girls and their educations and did everything in their power to prevent girls from going to school or becoming at all independent. Examining the importance of education from the perspectives of the Taliban, adults, and young girls in Kabul at this time creates an image of suppression and brings into question the motives of the Taliban's reform rules and whether or not they could have been meant to distinguish the threat of educated generations weakening their power. Young girls who grew up without much of an education seemed to end up as less rebellious and more submissive towards powerful men. This can be seen through Mariam, the first main character described in the book. Growing up she receives some lessons from Mullah Faizullah but her mom is against her going to a real school and brushes Mariam's comment off when she says she would like to go to a school with other kids. She says it is more important to learn to persevere. Mariam is later married off to a wealthy man named Rasheed in Kabul. In the first years of their marriage Mariam does everything she can to please him, cooking and cleaning all day so everything will be as he likes it. She wears a burka for him and does very little to defy him in any way. One day her rice is not as cooked as he would like to he takes her outside and "shoved two fingers into her mouth and pried it open, then forced the cold, hard pebbles into it...'CHEW' he said...Mariam chewed" (Hosseini, 104). • 5. Essay on Bahai Faith Bahai Faith The Bahá'í Faith proclaims itself to be the youngest of the independent world religions. Its roots stem from Iran during the mid–nineteenth century. This new faith is primarily based on the founder, Bahá'u'lláh, meaning 'the Glory of God'. Bahá'ís (the believers) in many places around the world have been heavily persecuted for their beliefs and differences and have been branded by many as a cult, a reform movement and/or a sect of the Muslim religion. The Bahá'í Faith is unique in that it accepts the teachings of what they believe to be all the divine messengers, these are Abraham, Moses, Zoroaster, the Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad. The new believers religious ideas were based on the Qur'án, and believed that within the Qur'án, that the prophecies of it were being fulfilled. Initially Islamic clergy saw the followers as "Muslim Heretics". And from these "Heretics", the first phase of the Faith was laid down; it was to become known as the Bábí Faith. The progenitors of the Faith were direct descendants of the Imams (Shiah chosen leaders). Tension grew between the Sunni and Shiah sects due to differences in belief of what leadership should prevail and rule after Muhammad's death. The first Sunni dynasty gained power twenty–nine years after Muhammad's death, and at once began putting the Imams to death, these descendents of Muhammad believed that it was them who should continue with Muhammad's teachings and assume the leadership of the people. With the persecution of the Imams, Shiah tradition says a young child, known as the twelfth Imam, was concealed to avoid execution. He was then to be known as the 'Hidden Imam'. For a period of sixty–nine years following his disappearance, the Hidden Imam was said to have communicated secretly with his followers through arbitrators, who took the title of bábs (gate). With the passing of the bábs, the title was passed on to a newly appointed one. The fourth and last báb refused or was unable to appoint a new successor and it was therefore implied that the matter to be left in the hands of God. The first day they that they took control of the city they began to exterminate it of all Jews that were living there. Everyone in the city of Kiev, including Jews and Non– Jews lived in fear. The massacre of the Jews that lived in Kiev began on September 29, 1941. On the outside it is a small ravine outside the city of Kiev, but if you dig deeper you will discover that this forgotten place is the site of the biggest and saddest event in the history of World War II. (World Book Encyclopedia 3). According to Shelia Stewart, Hitler's original plan was to capture all the Jews and send them to Madagascar. The plan was soon dropped because Germany couldn't defeat the British Navy. Hitler then created a new plan. The Nazis would force some of the Jews who were able to do manual labor, such as young men, to work. The Jews that couldn't work, for example older people, would be killed. After the Jews that were able to do work can't work anymore, they would also be killed. (28–29). When Hitler's troops invaded Kiev they posted notices in the city that stated, "Kikes of the city of Kiev and vicinity! Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals", in agreeance that justice requires sacrifice, suffering and struggle, Khaled Hosseini, author of A Thousand Splendid Suns writes about the struggle to achieve justice amongst to characters. Mariam and Laila had very different upbringings, yet they where destined to meet one another through a man, Rasheed, who disrespected women thus advocating injustice. It is clear that being a single parent is never an easy task, it is much more difficult when doing so in a society that promotes polygamy because while most women have the help of many other women in raising children and taking care of daily tasks Mariam's Nana did not. Mariam was raised by her Nana, her father figure had little to do with her upbringing because he was preoccupied with his many other wives and children. Nana raises Mariam with little to no help from the outside world and at the age of five Mariam's Nana heavily impacted her views on men when describing Mariam's father who abandons them she explains, "Rich man telling rich lies... The Baha'i faith is one that would deem this statement to be true. Baha'i is a lesser–known religion, but is still very important because people all over the world practice this faith. The origins of the Baha'i faith and its connection to other religions, its main teachings, and the Baha'i calendar are all important aspects that contribute to Baha'i today. Baha'i is considered to be an Abrahamic religion because it is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. It originated in Persia in 1844. The oneness of religion teaches that all of the world's major religions come from God and are not separate religions. They are, in fact, stages of the same religion that evolve as God sees fit. As previously stated, God is considered to be unknowable and therefore has revealed His teachings through "Divine Teachers". These teachers, including, but not limited to Moses, Jesus, Buddha, and Zoroaster, carried a message that was fit for the time. Due to these teachers, humanity has advanced and evolved through each new religion. Baha'u'llah expressed that the oneness of mankind is the most important teaching of the Baha'i faith. This states that a person must first see themselves as citizens of the world before they see themselves as a member of any other group. The ultimate goal of the Baha'i community is to attain world peace through abandoning prejudice, eliminating extreme poverty and wealth, and creating harmony with religion and science. It is also their goal to make education mandatory and attain equality between the sexes. • 16. The And The Soviet Regime Thirdly, Kuznetsov attacks the Soviet regime through its ability to present themselves as victims of Nazism during the war. This is done firstly through the destruction of the Kreschchatik and subsequent refusal of Soviet wrongdoing and secondly through the omission of Soviet liability. The Kreshchatik was the main street of Kiev that housed shops, offices, and apartments. Following the German invasion, near the end of September the Kreshchatik was set ablaze ultimately destroying large sections of it. This act was carried out by Bolsheviks who wanted to deliberately provoke Nazi barbarism against Kiev citizen. The Soviets were successful, as Timothy Snyder argues the immediate after effects of the burning of Kreschchatik stimulated the Nazis to change their policy from relaxed occupiers to violent tyrants. The bombing directly led to Germans ordering all Kiev Jews to report to a specific location in Kiev where they were later led to Babi Yar to be shot. Kuznetsov condemns the attack because firstly, this is a calculated attack against the civilians of Kiev, demonstrating the barbaric tendencies the Soviets descended to. Secondly, Kuznetsov points out the fallacy in the remembrance of the burning down of Kreshchatik. As described, it was the Soviets who committed the acts but the Soviet state following the war presented the acts as German doing. There are several notable movements that followed a non–violent path and changed the course of history through various means. However, there were few minorities who followed a non–adversarial approach and were able to resist peacefully in the face of over 170 years of oppression and injustice. The Baha'is in Iran have suffered from persecution and hostility since the inception of the religion. Despite the majority of Iranians showing no animosity towards Baha'is (Karlberg, 2010: 223), they have been on the receiving end of a full range of human rights abuse such as execution, torture, imprisonment without trial, social and economic exclusion, seizure of property and assets and desecration of holy places and gravesites. The author has used classical examples of Jewish persecution which every one knows is gone in the physical sense, but show how they still exist in the theoretical aspect, as the persecution is still occurring. In the next three stanzas, the poem takes the standpoint of three figures whose stories are pertinent examples of what Yevtushenko is trying to rely in this poem. First the voice of Dreyfus is used, and the stanza describes how horribly and unfairly he was treated, and how the country and its leaders turned their backs on him. There are two important literary devices used in this section. First the author puts the word "pettiness" on a line by itself. The German army successfully conquered Kiev on September 21st, 1941, after Soviet forces withdrew. Immediately upon German occupation, the planning for eliminating the Jewish population from Kiev began, and was shortly after conducted at the Massacre of Babi Yar, where it has been estimated that any number between 33,771 to 150,000 Jews were murdered. Despite Babi Yar's involvement in the Holocaust, the events which occurred at Babi Yar were relatively neglected in the studies about the Holocaust. The novel Babi Yar: A Document in the Form of a Novel (1970) by A. Antoli (Kuznetsov) has acted as one of few resources which has addressed the massacre of Jews at Babi Yar, as well as the horrific Nazi occupation of Kiev during the Second World War. Kuznetsov was twelve years old upon the Nazi occupation of Kiev and recorded his experience, as well as the experiences of others who survived. The novel has brought light to the oppressive and barbaric nature of the Nazi rule of Kiev which lasted for 778 days. Furthermore, the uncensored version has disclosed how the people living within Kiev acted during the period of Nazi occupation. Prior to this release, Soviet rule had not allowed for any release of information disclosing the massacre of Jews within Kiev during the Second World War. However, due to the oppressive nature of ... • 27. Comparing Islam And Baha ' I And Islam It's incredible how two religions can be so different yet so similar. Whether it be the various branches of Christianity, the Chinese religions, or even Judaism and Islam, they have so much in common when you work down to the roots of the religions. For starters, I will be comparing Islam and Baha'i. Part of the reason that Baha'i and Islam are so similar is because Baha'i gets its start from some of the base beliefs of Islam. Some of the similarities between the two are the fact that both have obligatory prayers. With Islam, a believer would pray five times a day. They pray at daybreak, noon, mid–afternoon, sunset, and evening. When Muslims do their prayers, there are specific movements and gestures involved. Also they must face Mecca, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Islamic faith has taken a firm stance on their belief of Baha'i. They take the teachings of the Baha'i religion as the teachings of heretics. Muslims have ridiculed, persecuted, and executed followers of this faith since 1850, when they executed the Bab. The similarities of these two religions are uncanny. They are so closely related, and the differences seem so miniscule, at least to the eye of an outsider looking in. When it come to the prayer life of members of the two religions, they are almost identical. They both pray multiple times a day, prayer is obligatory for both, there are movements and gestures to go along with the prayers, the prayers are done facing a certain location, either Mecca or Qiblih, and they are both rooted from the same region in the world. In all reality the only major difference causing these two religions to tear each other apart, is what they believe about the manifestation of Allah. Other than that they are both monotheistic, follow teachings from the prophet Mohammad, and have a regulated form of prayer for members of the religion to follow. So like I said at the start, like any religion and/or its branches, they can be practically identical, but so very different at the same time. There are three major monotheistic religions still in practice today. They are Islam, Judaism, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Symbolism In The White Hotel Representation of history in D. M. Thomas' novel The White Hotel At first, when I started to read the novel The White Hotel written by D.M. Thomas, I had the feeling that this novel is so vain and down to earth, gray, and the parts with letters are so boring. I was ashamed of myself that I didn't appreciate this book. Then when I came to the parts with erotic poems the disgust captured me and I wanted to throw this book away from me. But the part that (invoked the most emotions)(touched my feelings the most) is chapter five. I wanted to cry, I wanted to throw up, I wanted to forget about this book. I was questioning the world, I am living in, the notion of being a human, the sanity of the society of the previous century. This chapter V that describes the disgusting, Insane, horrifying massacre in Baby Yar had left its mark on my soul. How could the author include this, sacred to many Ukrainian, Russian Jews and not only Jews people, part of history in a work like this? For Ukrainian and Russian people Babi Yar is not only a tragedy, it is the place where the earth is soaked with the sacrificial blood. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Exactly in chapter V, where the Babi Yar is represented, we can clearly see the symptom of a mass hysteria that disfigured the German society. Brainwashed by the idea of their superiority over other nations, Hitler puppets bravely marched and exercised their rights to clean the world from unworthy nations. Two hysterias meet here. The hysteria is the same illness, but in the smaller scale, that is torturing the soul of the heroine of this novel. The author connects the illness of the main heroine with the illness of the society that she lives, into several different levels. Her soul is like a radio that can receive the waves from the stations, the bleeding wounds of the XX century. She can catch the signal from the hunger of Vienna, from Kiev occupation, ... Women have and still are degraded as inferior to men, forced to think that it is the woman's 'duty' to tend the house and children while the men do the 'important' work. Within the 20th and early 21st century, Afghanistan's female population has had to endure the harshest of these sexist restraints. The book A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is able to accurately describe the typical life of a female in modern Afghan society, causing the readers to feel as if they are suffering alongside the main characters, Mariam and Laila. • 31. A Thousand Splendid Suns Father Son Relationship Analysis The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is split into four sections. In Part I of the novel, it was told from Mariam's third person point of view. Part II shifts to the perspective of Laila, who is growing up in Kabul not far from Rasheed and Mariam's house, but who is getting an education thanks to her progressive father, Babi. After a nine–year jump and a shift of perspective, we have left the realm of a husband's brutality to enter that of a close family relationship. "She was a pari, a stunner, Mammy said. Her beauty was the talk of the valley. It skipped two generations of women in our family, but it sure didn't bypass you, Laila" (Hosseini 108). On the other hand, whereas politics has entered into Mariam's life sporadically and, up until this point, largely superficially, the communist regime in Afghanistan has a direct impact on Laila's education. Soviet propaganda is clearly evident in the way Laila' teacher, Khala Rangmaal teaches. In addition, however, Soviet norms about women's rights are progressive, even allowing girls to attend school. Was Hitler Responsible For The Holocaust Essay In spite of Adolf Hitler's critical role in the Holocaust, he was not directly responsible for the majority of the horrors that the events created. All of Germany had a solid reason for the persecution, if not extreme terrors that it included. After the conclusion of World War One and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was launched into a massive depression that devastated the country. Those who are suffering are bound to reach a state of anger at some point, and at the beginning they were right to feel this sentiment. • 34. Gender Roles In A Thousand Splendid Suns How well does the book portray contemporary gender roles? The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns does portray contemporary gender roles. The novel shows how an Afghan woman must look, how each gender is supposed to act and the difference in social status for each of the genders in more oppressive views. The novel certainly demonstrates where a women's place is against a man's, and how men are regarded higher than women in society. Through Babi the ideas that come through when Mohammad Saoud came to power in 1973 are shown, that women should be equal to men as he believes that education is a very important asset in society, even for women. This reflects the ideas that come forward at the time, such as the education of all children and women's rights to employment. A Thousand Splendid Suns By Khaled Hosseini A Thousand Splendid Suns Essay A Thousand Splendid Suns, a book written by Khaled Hosseini, gives us a unique and informative glimpse into life in Afghanistan in the early 1960's to the 2000's. In it we can see many different political and social issues ravaging the country, with the most evident being gender inequality. Though many diverse groups of people were being discriminated against at the time, most of the subordination fell onto women as they had more and more rights taken away from them when various ruling powers took control. This demonstrates just how pro women's rights Babi was, as he not only believed in education for females and the idea that arranged marriages at young ages are wrong, but also that women could be the ones to make the country strong again, not men. Because of his beliefs, you can assume Babi represented the Soviet government that administered over Afghanistan at the time. Later into the book though, Babi ends up passing away in a terribly violent way, which to me represents the collapse of the soviet union (which happens around the same time as his death) by the violent hands of the Mujahideen. After his death, Laila then ends up living under the authority of a dangerous and brutal male, Rasheed, who represents the new Mujahideen government that took control. Rasheed had very conservative views, as seen when he warned the girls to obey his every word, not leave the house without him, and always wear a Burqa. All the things he asked them to do were the policies the new Mujahideen government set into place, restricting women 's rights. By including this hidden meaning behind the characters, Hosseini actually uses them as a way to give perspective as to just how oppressive the Mujahideen actually was, and how much of a shock it must have been to women.
