A favourable environment
for interactivity
In the space of just a few years video games have established themselves
at Pôle Image Magelis as one of the sectors at the forefront
of the Creative Media Industry.
All the aspects of the video game are represented in the department, from social gaming to games on tablets and
smartphones and from casual gaming to triple A games.
Faced with the tidal wave of casual and social games and the arrival of serious games, the video game must now
take a different approach, far removed from the classic production process. The economy in the sector today relies
on key actors such as the social networks, the Apple App Store and on-line platforms.
Pôle Image Magelis has set up financial support adapted to the needs of the development studios in order to
support, in the most efficient way, the companies wishing to join the Creative Media Community.
Anticipating, developing and distributing products with high added value in a constantly-evolving domain is also
the DNA of Enjmin, the Graduate School of Games and Interactive Media, which was created in 2004, in Angoulême.
With this training facility dedicated to a leading-edge sector, Angoulême confirms its position as a place where
internationally renowned professionals and many students rub shoulders and work together in a production
environment to create tomorrow’s games and interactive media.
Support fund: assistance for writing, pilot,
production, creation of multimedia products
and video games.
Assistance for the schools of the Creative Media
Campus: opening new courses, new training
structures in relation to your activity.
Company incubator: the Etincel programme,
assistance in setting up and creating companies.
Bridges between actors of the Creative Media
Industry, synergies between the different activities
of the Image sector in the region, international
conferences, support and promotion of projects…

With a clearly stated positioning on video games, Pôle Image Magelis has sought to support the economic approach of
the industry through the creation of an international event entitled Videogame Economics Forum (VEF).
Launched in 2012, the VEF has been designed as an opportunity, through numerous contributions from international
personalities, to learn more about the video game industry, the business models to be prepared, the introduction
of innovative and successful strategies. It is also a special moment for developers to boost their creation by forging
relationships with investors, business angels and venture capitalists.
Over two days, financial directors, editors, studio directors, investors, venture capilatists succeed each other in a Keynote
format (for better concision), making the VEF one of the most important annual gatherings on the subject in Europe.

Video games are the number 1
cultural good in France.
A country of players
with women in the lead
For several years now, annual
sales of video games have
made them the most widely
sold cultural product in France.
In 2011, 2 video games (Call of
Duty and FIFA) ranked number
1 and 2 in French cultural
good sales. The revenues from
some recently released major
productions should confirm
the trend in 2012.
The industry is expected to
generate about €3 billion
of sales in France in 2012 –
€2.7 billion more than in
20111

Over a billion players worldwide
The average age of players is rising.
The number of female players is rising too.
Year after year, an increasing number of people join the video game craze. This is
a strong trend. In just a few years, the industry has gone from 300 million to nearly
a billion players5
.
Every segment of the population plays video games:
83% of players are over 18, and the average player age is currently 35.
Fifty-five percent of the French population plays.
There has been a marked increase among 35-49 year-
olds, while the over-50s age segment has doubled in
size. An increasing number of women are becoming
games fans: they account for nearly 50% of all players7
.
84% have mobile phones, and 65% have computers .
Forty-eight percent of households have game consoles,
84% have mobile phones and 65% have computers7
In just 5 years in France, the number of players has risen from 17 to 28 million
people6

Mobile and cross-platform
Dematerialization on mobiles and tablets
Users now spend more time on mobile applications
than on the Internet.
This trend has reached a point where dematerialized game content and
applications – accessible on networks and as downloads on consoles,
computers, mobile phones, and tablets – now constitute over half of the world
video game7
market. In 2011, they represented only 35% of the global market.
While there has been a lot of enthusiasm for playing, paying for
games is not yet widespread. Only 21% of French people are ready to
pay. Of those who do, only 37% spend over €10 per year9
.
Twenty-five percent of apps
on Android and some 30%
of iOS apps are games.
Video games take up 49%
of time spent on mobile
devices8
, and about 19%
of time spent on tablets.

Games on such platforms have
also had record sales:
Massive distribution of video games
on mobile platforms
Massive games distribution on digital distribution platforms, too
The very widespread distribution of mobile platforms has fostered
dematerialization. Worldwide in 201210 around 170 million iPhone and iPad units
were sold, over 400 million Android smartphones, and 365 million Apple OS
smartphones. In France alone, tablet sales reached
3 million.
I n c o n t r a s t , g lo b a l s a le s o f co n s o le s
in 2012 stood at just 260 million units.
It is estimated that by 2015, there will be somewhere
between 600 to 800 million devices dedicated to video
gaming (classic and handheld consoles), compared
to the 6 to 7 billion devices that are not exclusively
dedicated to video gaming, but that can be used for
playing (smartphones, tablets, connected TV sets, etc.).
Video games are still played chiefly on PCs worldwide and in France (70% of
players). The use of download platforms to access titles has been a tremendous
success with players. Steam now has over 50 million players who have signed
up since it was created 9 years ago. It accounts for over 90% of the PC
game download market. As for Origin, the new Electronic Arts platform, over
30 million players have signed on since it was launched a year ago. Other recent
initiatives such as Uplay are also expected to gain a large following.
There were over a billion Angry
Birds downloads in 2012.

A dynamic but fragmented sector
France, a breeding ground for
production and development
France is a trailblazer in video game creation. Since the
1980s, several games that France has created have been
international successes. Some genres such as survival horror
were also created by French developers.
What sets the French video game market apart is its
dynamism, with a robust start-up scene. Although 32% of
companies are under two years old, there is a certain stability
to the market, as 27% of companies have been in business for over 10 years –
of which 4% are over 15 years old).
Thirty-three percent of companies boast annual sales of over €1 million.
However, the sector is also very fragmented. Fifty-two percent of companies
have over 10 employees. Production teams are scattered all over France, with
major hubs in Ile-de-France, Rhône-Alpes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Aquitaine,
Languedoc-Roussillon and the Northwest of the country.
Thirty-three percent of companies boast annual sales of over 1 million.

Companies with an international presence
on the mobile and PC markets
A sector that creates jobs and value in France
Out of more than 250 companies in France, 32% are less than 2 years old, while
27% are over 10. Thirty-three percent of companies generate over €1 million in
sales, and 8% over 10 million.
The sector is based on development studios, where 86% of activity is concentrated.
Twenty-eight percent of companies operate in publishing.
Only 7% produce exclusively for the physical market, 52% for both
the dematerialized and physical markets, and 41% for dematerialized
platforms only.
Out of the companies that produce for physical
platforms, 89% do so for PCs and Macs. Living room
consoles represent 66% of output.
Most production for dematerialized platforms focuses
on smartphones (66%) and tablets (63%).
The video game industry directly produces over 5,000 jobs, of which
3,000 are in production. It is estimated that the industry indirectly creates
over twice as many jobs in the IT, music, and localization sectors for example.
Forty-eight percent of companies have less
than 10 employees, and 35% have between 11 and 492.
Although some French companies have recently
experienced difficulties, the video game industry continues
to hire skilled individuals. Every month, production teams post over 150 new job
offers.
With the expected growth and new markets in the
making, the video game sector will continue to
hire in the years to come.
In 2012 it published a comprehensive study on lines
of business, employment, and compensation.
Going international is both a necessity and a natural
choice, as France only represents between 5 and 7% of
the world market and exports 80% of the games
it creates.

  • 6. SNJV_Livre1.indb 6 23/07/13 10:43:17 A favourable environment for interactivity In the space of just a few years video games have established themselves at Pôle Image Magelis as one of the sectors at the forefront of the Creative Media Industry. All the aspects of the video game are represented in the department, from social gaming to games on tablets and smartphones and from casual gaming to triple A games. Faced with the tidal wave of casual and social games and the arrival of serious games, the video game must now take a different approach, far removed from the classic production process. The economy in the sector today relies on key actors such as the social networks, the Apple App Store and on-line platforms. Pôle Image Magelis has set up financial support adapted to the needs of the development studios in order to support, in the most efficient way, the companies wishing to join the Creative Media Community. Anticipating, developing and distributing products with high added value in a constantly-evolving domain is also the DNA of Enjmin, the Graduate School of Games and Interactive Media, which was created in 2004, in Angoulême. With this training facility dedicated to a leading-edge sector, Angoulême confirms its position as a place where internationally renowned professionals and many students rub shoulders and work together in a production environment to create tomorrow’s games and interactive media. Support fund: assistance for writing, pilot, production, creation of multimedia products and video games. Assistance for the schools of the Creative Media Campus: opening new courses, new training structures in relation to your activity. Company incubator: the Etincel programme, assistance in setting up and creating companies. Bridges between actors of the Creative Media Industry, synergies between the different activities of the Image sector in the region, international conferences, support and promotion of projects… Links with comics and animation. SNJV_Livre1.indb 7 23/07/13 10:43:19 With a clearly stated positioning on video games, Pôle Image Magelis has sought to support the economic approach of the industry through the creation of an international event entitled Videogame Economics Forum (VEF). Launched in 2012, the VEF has been designed as an opportunity, through numerous contributions from international personalities, to learn more about the video game industry, the business models to be prepared, the introduction of innovative and successful strategies. It is also a special moment for developers to boost their creation by forging relationships with investors, business angels and venture capitalists. Over two days, financial directors, editors, studio directors, investors, venture capilatists succeed each other in a Keynote format (for better concision), making the VEF one of the most important annual gatherings on the subject in Europe. A country of players with women in the lead For several years now, annual sales of video games have made them the most widely sold cultural product in France. In 2011, 2 video games (Call of Duty and FIFA) ranked number 1 and 2 in French cultural good sales. The revenues from some recently released major productions should confirm the trend in 2012. The industry is expected to generate about €3 billion of sales in France in 2012 – €2.7 billion more than in 20111 . By way of comparison w i t h o t h e r c u l t u r a l industries, music generates €617 million2 , home videos 1.2 billion3 , and movies 1.3 billion3 . • 19. SNJV_Livre1.indb 19 23/07/13 11:35:30 Over a billion players worldwide The average age of players is rising. The number of female players is rising too. Year after year, an increasing number of people join the video game craze. This is a strong trend. In just a few years, the industry has gone from 300 million to nearly a billion players5 . Every segment of the population plays video games: 83% of players are over 18, and the average player age is currently 35. Fifty-five percent of the French population plays. There has been a marked increase among 35-49 year- olds, while the over-50s age segment has doubled in size. An increasing number of women are becoming games fans: they account for nearly 50% of all players7 . 84% have mobile phones, and 65% have computers . Forty-eight percent of households have game consoles, 84% have mobile phones and 65% have computers7 In just 5 years in France, the number of players has risen from 17 to 28 million people6 , which is over 58% of the French population Average players age 35 19 5 Interview with Yves Guillemot from Ubisoft in Le Point, August 27th, 2012 6 INSEE survey on household multimedia equipment 7 2012 Enterbrain study

This trend has reached a point where dematerialized game content and applications – accessible on networks and as downloads on consoles, computers, mobile phones, and tablets – now constitute over half of the world video game7 market. In 2011, they represented only 35% of the global market. While there has been a lot of enthusiasm for playing, paying for games is not yet widespread. Only 21% of French people are ready to pay. Of those who do, only 37% spend over €10 per year9 . Twenty-five percent of apps on Android and some 30% of iOS apps are games. Video games take up 49% of time spent on mobile devices8 , and about 19% of time spent on tablets. Fifteen percent of video gamers play on tablets, and 42% play on mobile phones3 . • 21. SNJV_Livre1.indb 21 23/07/13 11:35:30 Games on such platforms have also had record sales: Massive distribution of video games on mobile platforms Massive games distribution on digital distribution platforms, too The very widespread distribution of mobile platforms has fostered dematerialization. Worldwide in 201210 around 170 million iPhone and iPad units were sold, over 400 million Android smartphones, and 365 million Apple OS smartphones. In France alone, tablet sales reached 3 million. I n c o n t r a s t , g lo b a l s a le s o f co n s o le s in 2012 stood at just 260 million units. It is estimated that by 2015, there will be somewhere between 600 to 800 million devices dedicated to video gaming (classic and handheld consoles), compared to the 6 to 7 billion devices that are not exclusively dedicated to video gaming, but that can be used for playing (smartphones, tablets, connected TV sets, etc.). Video games are still played chiefly on PCs worldwide and in France (70% of players). The use of download platforms to access titles has been a tremendous success with players. Steam now has over 50 million players who have signed up since it was created 9 years ago. It accounts for over 90% of the PC game download market. As for Origin, the new Electronic Arts platform, over 30 million players have signed on since it was launched a year ago. Other recent initiatives such as Uplay are also expected to gain a large following. There were over a billion Angry Birds downloads in 2012. There are now more birds thrown in Angry Birds than there actually are on the planet11 . 50 million players 30 million players t h e 11 Article in Rue 89, French online journal 21
  • 22. SNJV_Livre1.indb 22 23/07/13 11:35:31 A dynamic but fragmented sector France, a breeding ground for production and development France is a trailblazer in video game creation. Since the 1980s, several games that France has created have been international successes. Some genres such as survival horror were also created by French developers. What sets the French video game market apart is its dynamism, with a robust start-up scene. Although 32% of companies are under two years old, there is a certain stability to the market, as 27% of companies have been in business for over 10 years – of which 4% are over 15 years old). Thirty-three percent of companies boast annual sales of over €1 million. However, the sector is also very fragmented. Fifty-two percent of companies have over 10 employees. Production teams are scattered all over France, with major hubs in Ile-de-France, Rhône-Alpes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Aquitaine, Languedoc-Roussillon and the Northwest of the country. Thirty-three percent of companies boast annual sales of over 1 million. S N J VS N J V 22
  • 23. SNJV_Livre1.indb 23 23/07/13 11:35:31 Companies with an international presence on the mobile and PC markets A sector that creates jobs and value in France Out of more than 250 companies in France, 32% are less than 2 years old, while 27% are over 10. Thirty-three percent of companies generate over €1 million in sales, and 8% over 10 million. The sector is based on development studios, where 86% of activity is concentrated. Twenty-eight percent of companies operate in publishing. Only 7% produce exclusively for the physical market, 52% for both the dematerialized and physical markets, and 41% for dematerialized platforms only. Out of the companies that produce for physical platforms, 89% do so for PCs and Macs. Living room consoles represent 66% of output. Most production for dematerialized platforms focuses on smartphones (66%) and tablets (63%). The video game industry directly produces over 5,000 jobs, of which 3,000 are in production. It is estimated that the industry indirectly creates over twice as many jobs in the IT, music, and localization sectors for example. Forty-eight percent of companies have less than 10 employees, and 35% have between 11 and 492. Although some French companies have recently experienced difficulties, the video game industry continues to hire skilled individuals. Every month, production teams post over 150 new job offers. With the expected growth and new markets in the making, the video game sector will continue to hire in the years to come. In 2012 it published a comprehensive study on lines of business, employment, and compensation. Going international is both a necessity and a natural choice, as France only represents between 5 and 7% of the world market and exports 80% of the games it creates. 66% 63 % THE SNJV HAS IDENTIFIED 28 SPECIFIC LINES OF BUSINESS, DIVIDED INTO 5 MAIN GROUPSSUPPORT SERVICES DESIGN TECHNOLOGY IMAGE MANAGEMENT 23
