Methods For Modifying Behavior And Behavior Modification
Methods for Modifying Behavior in Children
Behavior modification is a treatment technique used to tackle countless problems within children.
When children are born discipline and growth comes from the parents. We teach right from wrong.
Therefore, we are where the root of the behavior starts. Children must be correctly disciplined by the
age of six because if not that child would most likely be a criminal. A child behavior rises from what
they learn and their surroundings, so what we teach our children as well as what they see is what
they take with them throughout life. When parents apply these particular elements of techniques,
they can work with their children to swap improper or disagreeable behavior. B.F Skinner proposed
that behavior ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Skinner created what he called an operant conditioning apparatus that later was referred to as the
"skinner box." The Skinner box is a compartment that enclosed a key that an animal had access to
when they wanted water, food, or even reinforcement. Skinner was the number one believer that
children react to rewards and gifts. He believed that you had the ability to make a child do whatever
you want when you give them things.
Methods for Modifying Behavior
There are numerous of methods for modifying your children's behavior. Three of the best methods
for modifying behavior in children are rewarding, setting consequences and boundaries. When
children portray good behavior at home or in school you reward them. Whether it is gifts, privileges,
money or just letting them stay up late because they have done something good inspires the child to
continue doing well. They will then want to continue that behavior so he or she can continue to
receive rewards. Gifts or rewards should be given to children for good behavior it shows them is
they maintain good behavior they will receive rewards.
As a parent, you have to reinforce rules with children. You must show children that things given to
them as a privilege can be taken away when they misbehave or do something he or she is not
suppose to. Taking things away from a child is the number one consequence that can occur. If a
child loves a particular game system,

Positive Change In World Through Manipulation of Behavior in B.F Skinner's Waldo Two
B.F. Skinner, in his novel Walden Two, presents many arguments about how he foresees a positive
change in the world through manipulation of behavior on the personal level. Sigmund Freud, in his
works, specifically Civilization and
Its Discontents, presents his view of human nature and what is innately problematic about it. Both
Freud and Skinner agree that human behavior is the result of outside factors that severely hinder the
concept of free will.
Skinner believes that humans, in the correct environment, can live happily, while Freud understands
that humans are destined to live in "some degree of anguish or discontent."

Skinner wants to use this notion to create a world without pain and suffering. In
Walden Two, he systematically describes what conditions are necessary to create a world of
happiness.
Skinner proposes that to create his perfect society, one needs only to come up with the
characteristics of what man should be. Since he can then create any man, he will fill the world with
these perfectly–conditioned people and all will be perfect. Although many of his insights are
problematic at the root level, some of what Skinner proposes is material which should not just be
totally dismissed.
Freud has a much different concept of human existence. He, too, says that people are "formed" out
of experiences and pre–existent conditions.
However, Freud believes that the biggest factor in shaping human behavior is much more personal
and internal. Since everyone experiences things differently, he claims, it is impossible to shape
everyone so that some utopian society will form, as in Skinner's case.
Freud recognizes on one level that there is an innate conflict between the individual and society. So
even at the first level, there is a conflict which will hinder happiness. Freud states that the norms of
society are much too rigorous for the common person because they are in conflict with the inner
desires of the psyche. Keep in mind, this has nothing

How Did Bf Skinner Use Operant Conditioning
Burrhus Frederic (B.F.) Skinner was born on March 20, 1904. Skinner lived 86 years passing away
on August 18, 1990. He was born in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania to William and Grace Skinner. His
father was a lawyer, while his mother stayed home to care for Skinner and his younger brother.
Skinner being 18 lost his 16–year–old brother of a cerebral hemorrhage. At a young age, Skinner
showed an interest in building different gadgets and contraptions.
Skinner attended Hamilton College in New York looking to become a writer. Skinner became an
atheist after a Christian teacher tried to soften his fear of the hell his grandmother described. After

While Skinner was at Harvard, he invented what he called an operant conditioning apparatus, known
as the Skinner Box. By using this device, Skinner could study an animal interacting with its
environment. He started off by studying rodents in the experiments, examining how the rats
discovered and used a lever in the box that dispensed food at different times. Skinner then started
experimenting with pigeons, using the box. The pigeons pecked at a disc to gain access to food. By
conducting these tests Skinner came to the decision that some form of reinforcement was crucial in
learning new behaviors. While researching at Harvard, Skinner pronounced the results of his operant
conditioning experiments in the Behavior of Organisms (1938).
Skinner became the chair of the psychology department at Indiana University in 1945. He decided to
leave two years later to return to Harvard as a speaker. In 1948, Skinner then received the
opportunity to become a professor there in where he remained for the rest of his career. Watching his
children grow up, he his interest in education increased. Skinner industrialized a teaching technique
to study learning in children. Skinner later wrote The Technology of Teaching

Summary Of ' Walden Two ( 1948 )
B.F. Skinner is an American Psychologist from Pennsylvania who developed the idea of
Behaviorism after studying at Harvard University (Biography.com Editors, n.d.). He is also known
for his works such as, The Behavior of Organisms (1938), the novel Walden Two (1948), and later
Beyond Freedom and Human Dignity (1971) which examines behaviorism in society
(Biography.com Editors, n.d.). Burrhus Frederic Skinner was born and raised in Susquehanna, a
little town in Pennsylvania on March 20,1904 (B.F. Skinner Foundation, 2014;Biography.com
Editors, n.d.). He was an imaginative and inventive child that built different mechanism which
included, a cart that steered backwards, a perpetual motion machine, and a flotation device that
separated ripe from unripe fruit (B.F. Skinner Foundation, 2014). As he grew older, he also showed
an interest in writing, and the ideas of Francis Bacon, whose ideas of inductive reasoning influenced
Skinner (B.F. Skinner Foundation, 2014). According to the B.F. Skinner Foundation (2014) once in
college Skinner chose to be a writer, he attended Hamilton and after graduating returned home and
wrote a few articles which brought him little to no success. He later moved to New York and worked
as a bookstore clerk where he stumbled upon the works of Pavlov and Watson, they held an
impression on him and he strived to learn more (B.F. Skinner Foundation, 2014). Therefor, Skinner

Essay about B.F. Skinner
B.F. Skinner Psychologist, born in Susquhanna, Pa. He studied at Harvard, teaching there (1931–6,

operant conditioning. The organism is in the process of "operating" on the environment, which in

Or "x" times. There is a fixed ratio between behaviors and reinforcers: 3 to 1, 5 to 1, 20 to 1, etc.
This is a little like "piece rate" in the clothing manufacturing industry: You get paid so much for so
many shirts. Skinner also looked at variable schedules. Variable ratio means you change the "x" each
time first it takes 3 tricks to get a treat, then 10, then 1, then 7 and so on. Variable interval means
you keep changing the time period –– first 20 seconds, then 5, then 35, then 10 and so on. In both
cases, it keeps the dog on their little toes. With the variable interval schedule, they no longer "pace"
themselves, because they no can no longer establish a "rhythm" between behavior and reward. Most
importantly, these schedules are very resistant to extinction. It makes sense, if you think about it. If
you haven't gotten a reinforcer for a while, well, it could just be that you are at a particularly "bad"
ratio or interval. A question Skinner had to deal with was how we get to more complex sorts of
behaviors. He responded with the idea of shaping, or "the method of successive approximations."
Basically, it involves first reinforcing a behavior only vaguely similar to the one desired. Once that
is established, you look out for variations that come a little closer to what you want, and so on, until
you have the animal performing a behavior that would never show up in ordinary life. Skinner and

His fields and education
Skinner was a prolific author; he had more than 200 articles and 20 books related to psychology, so
he was a psychologist and a writer. His first encounters with behavioral science was after attending
Hamilton College, where he decided to become a writer, he loved what he did and was impressed by
it. At Hamilton College he felt that he didn't fit in with others, he didn't party or hang out with other
students. However he graduated in 1926 with his BA in English. Skinner worked in writing
newspapers and articles, but didn't feel that he was such a success in what he was doing.
He resigned and decided to pursue a different direction in his life. He went back to studying but this
time in Harvard University to study Psychology, he got his masters and doctorate and stayed there to
do researches and finally he graduated in 1936.
Because he chose the psychology field he had many theories and experiments that changed our
world today and introduced new systems that were revolutionary to the world of psychology and
how we study people.

B F Skinner Sparknotes
This chapter is centered on researcher B.F Skinner, who was known for highlighting rewards and
reinforcements through animal experiments. He also demonstrated operant conditioning through
positive reinforcements. Today, many individuals possess both a negative and a positive view of
Skinner and his experiments (ranging from evil to highest esteem respectively). This may be due to
the difficulty of "separating content from controversy"(8). Skinner was born in 1904 and can be
identified for many quirks such as working only on a cluttered desk. He went onto go and study
psychology at Harvard in 1928, rather than taking up his desire of becoming a novelist. Despite
initially avoiding the softer psychology fields, Skinner came across a psychology workshop ... Show

However, many others viewed it to be much more frightening (as suggested by the name "Heir
Conditioner"). Towards the end of the chapter, Slater attempts to find Skinner's box daughter and
comes into contact with one of his daughters, Julie. As Slater attempted to ask questions about
Skinner, Julie dismissed any negative claims of her father and mentioned how her sister Deborah,
the alleged dead child, is alive and doing well. As the conversation escalated, Julie ends the
conversation by asking if Slater read Beyond Freedom and Dignity by Skinner and she agrees to
actually meet and talk with Slater once Slater read the book. Beyond Freedom and Dignity suggests
how "Skinner is clearly proposing a humane social policy rooted in his experimental findings" and
how "man exists irrefutably in relationship to his environment and can never be free of it" (28).
Once Slater finished the book, she was able to visit Julie in B.F Skinner's home and take a look
inside his study. Everything in the study was preserved in its original state, such as books,
manuscripts and a piece of chocolate that Skinner bit

Who Is B. F. Skinner Operant Conditioning
INFLUENTIAL FIGURES IN PSYCHOLOGY
B.F Skinner
Have you ever thought about what will happen when a child makes a mistake and gets punished for
it? Next time when he tries again to do the same thing he will do less and less. This is a theory that
B.F. Skinner based his operations on, called operant conditioning. B.F. Skinner was a leading
"behaviorist," who rejected introspection and studied how consequences shape behavior.
Introspection is the self–observation of one's conscious. Burrhus Frederic Skinner was born on
March 20, 1904 in Susquehanna Depot, Pennsylvania. He grew up in an active household, his
mother being a tough and bright housewife and his father a hard–working lawyer. As a child, B.F.
Skinner was active, outgoing, and intelligent, he loved school. After B.F. Skinner successfully
graduated from high school, he enrolled at Hamilton College in New York. Later on, he decided to
go back to school this time at Harvard University to study psychology.
B.F. Skinner had a wife and two daughters. One of the daughters was famous for being
experimented in her father's invention "the Skinner box." The "air crib," better known as "the
Skinner box," is an invention inspired by Skinner's wife. It would keep the baby from crying by
allowing the temperature to be just right for the baby.
B.F. Skinner's main finding in psychology was "the operant conditioning" theory. Here the

B. F. Skinner's Influence On The Field Of Psychology
B.F. Skinner
"The consequences of behavior determine the probability that the behavior will occur again," said B.
F. Skinner (Cherry, 2014). This is a quote that greatly affected Skinners experiments and influences
in the psychology world. Burrhus Fredrick Skinner or also known as B.F. Skinner was born on
March 20, 1904 in Pennsylvania. As a boy, he enjoyed creating and conceiving ideas that later lead
to his interests in the psychological realm. He graduated from Hamilton College although not
knowing what he wanted to do. Skinner began a career as a writer and author; he then decided to
pursue psychology at Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard, he continued to work
there for the rest of his career. The experiments he performed ... Show more content on

The example Skinner uses with the rat and the consequence of it getting food each time it accidently
hit the lever, meant it would repeat the action, known as positive reinforcement. Positive
reinforcement reinforces the behavior by having a consequence that is rewarding, which is very
effective. Another way to reinforce a behavior is by negative reinforcement which ends or eliminates
an unpleasant experience. Skinner placed a rat in the Skinner Box and would cause it discomfort by
an electric current. If the rat would hit the lever, the current would turn off. The rat soon learned to
go straight to the lever after just a few times of being in the box (Mcleod, 2007). These concepts
were what Skinner believed to be taking place and what lead to his approach of behaviorism.
Behaviorism is a theory that human or animal psychology can be studied through examination of
observable behavioral events. Behavior is a subject matter in its own right, it is also the functioning
of an organism that entails communication or exchanges with its environmental settings (Moore,
2011). Skinner believes that to discover behavior, we should watch actions rather than study mind
and emotion. See how beings act in their natural environment and how their behaviors can be
changed was Skinners theory which researchers still study

Skinner moved back to his parents' home and built a study to conduct his writings (Kaiga, 2012,

Harvard University (Boeree, n.d., para. 5). In 1930, Skinner received his Master's degree followed
by his PhD in 1936 (Boeree, n.d., para. 5). Later that year, Skinner moved to the University of
Minnesota to teach (Swenson, 1999, para. 6). Skinner is also known for his work on the "baby box",
an attempt at mechanizing the care of a child, following the death of his second child (Swenson,
1999, para. 7). The box would maintain a certain temperature while only wearing a diaper
(Swenson, 1999, para. 7).The box has led to what is now known as an "air crib" (Swenson, 1999,
para. 7). Operant Conditioning While at Harvard, Skinner developed an operant conditioning
apparatus to study behavior in a more objective and measured way (Kaiga, 2012, para. 6). The
apparatus could be used to observe animals and how they interact with their environment (Kaiga,
2012, para. 6). Skinner experimented with rats that had to pull a lever in the box to dispense food at
different intervals (Kaiga, 2012, para. 6). Skinner's is regarded as the father of Operant conditioning
while his work was based on Thorndike's law of effect (Kaiga, 2012, para. 6). Reinforcement is a
term that Skinner introduced to the law of effect in which behavior that is reinforced tends to be

Bf Skinner Theory
The Life of B.F. Skinner One of the most prominent and influential psychologists of the twentieth
century, B.F. Skinner was known as a behavioral psychologist, philosopher of science, and an
educational innovator. Throughout his life he did experimental work with animals to discover how
patterns of behavior are learned. His initial work was primarily conducted with animals, and later in
life he started to work with humans and apply his learning from his pigeon studies to human
behavior. He focused on the individual and wrote about how to restructure social systems to improve
the quality of life. Three major events in the early twentieth century greatly influenced Skinner's
work: Darwin's theory of evolution, Freud's psychoanalysis, and Pavlov's approach to conditioning.
Darwin asserted that all life forms evolved from simple forms and that the selection of
characteristics contribute to the survival of each individual. Skinner believed that Darwin's ideas
could be applied to behaviorism and coined the idea of "selection by consequences" to explain why
people act how they act. Psychoanalysis began in the early 1900s and Freud focused on the idea that
people are driven by their unconscious and that adult behaviors are formed in childhood. Skinner
agreed with a few of Freud's ideas; both psychologists believed that behavior has predictable effects
and is not a result of free will. However, Skinner rejected Freud's idea that the id, ego, and superego
cause behavior. Pavlov's

Skinner was an experimental scientist, an atheist, and is touted as the father of strict behaviorism.
He felt at his core that people are socially conditioned, and this belief permeated his entire career.
He expected nothing from religion and felt that faith in God was utterly futile. He based his science
of behaviorism upon determinism, viewing human beings as mere programmed robots without free
will, thus maintaining a perspective that saw no need for the role of religion and a divine power. He
did hold to a strict moral code and made an honest effort to live according to "moral" principles, but
he viewed spirituality as a myth and simply irrational. To him, it was a mere state of positive
emotion. His harsh view of religion originated in a childhood fear of religion invoked by his
grandmother's constant threat of hell, and this resulted in a view of the relationship between God
and man as strictly punitive (Chirban, 2014). "It was evident that religion failed to provide Skinner
with a positive self image and an understanding of the world that had led him to exclude God from
his pursuit of Truth thought to seek the design of a positive world scientifically" (Chirban, 2014).

Pavlov as well. During his time at Harvard he wanted a verifiable way to study psychology. In
result, he developed a machine called "Operant Conditioning" in 1937, known as the Skinner Box.
Skinner's theory was that the external behavior should be observed only, he was more focused on
how the consequences can impact a person's behavior. He wanted to analyze how a consequences of

Skinners experiments are said to be dated, but the information that was found within these
experiments are still valid in today's psychological practice. The claims and experiments that
Skinner founded are still being taught in today's psychology classes. A claim from the book Beyond
Freedom and Dignity by Skinner (1971) himself says "In short, we need to make vast changes in
human behavior, and we cannot make them with the help of nothing," (4) and leads to say that
"when human behavior begins, technology stops, and that we must carry on, as we have in the past,
with what we have learned from personal experience or from those collections of personal
experiences called history..."(Skinner,1971, p.6.). With behavior modification we need to take a
psychological approach as Skinner had mentioned in his book that when human behavior begins,
technology ends. The brain responds to stimulus and if the brain responds to reward, then it would
turn into a learned behavior. He also believed that the best way to look at and understand behavior
was to look at the causes of an action and the consequence that follows. Twenty five hundred years

B.F. Skinner's Concept of Verbal Behavior One of the most influential members of the behaviorist
movement, as well as among psychologists who study human development was B.F. Skinner
(Diessner, 2008, p. 134). Skinner was notable for his description of the acquisition of new behavior
through the use of reinenforcement and punishment called operant conditioning (Diessner, 2008).
Skinner also contributed his behaviorist explanation of language development through his concept
of verbal behavior (Diessner, 2008). To Skinner verbal behavior is basically a behavior which is
"reinenforced through the mediation of others" (Skinner, 1957, p. 2) and ultimately the speaker by

2000). In the second stage of "Intermediary Reactions" which would be the transition between the
preoperational stage and the concrete operational stage, behaviors not displayed by all children was
noted (Diessner, 2008). First, some children were able to assume that the quantity of liquid would
not change when poured from the one tall beaker into the two smaller glasses, but when more
glasses were introduced the child went back to the prior stage belief of nonconservation (Diessner,
2008). Another reaction to the experiment was that the child accepted the concept of conservation
but as soon as the quantity was greater the child became uncertain (Diessner, 2008). An explanation
for these reactions can be that as the child transitions from preoperational to concrete operational
stage their ideas of reasoning are still developing (Mooney, 2000). Finally in stage 3 "Necessary
Conservation" corresponds to Piaget's concrete operational stage of cognitive development
(Diessner, 2008). In this group children recognized that the quantities of liquid are conserved and

The Ideal Of Behaviorism And Its Effect On The Environment
"The ideal of behaviorism is to eliminate coercion: to apply controls by changing the environment in
such a way as to reinforce the kind of behavior that benefits everyone," stated B. F. Skinner (Brainy,
2014). This is a quote that is very popular and was a prime description of those Skinners
experiments were meant to prove along with it being a saying that many people in the psychology
world followed. Burrhus Fredrick Skinner was born on March 20, 1904 in the small town
Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. Skinners father was a lawyer while his mother was a stay at home mom
to take care of him and his younger brother. As a boy, he enjoyed creating a variety of gadgets and
coming up with convincing ideas that was his step in stone later on when he go into psychological
studies. After graduating from Hamilton College in 1926, Skinner was very undecided on what he
wanted to do for the rest of his life. Skinner tried to begin a career as a writer and author, but soon
realized he was not making any progress; he decided to pursue psychology at Harvard University.
After graduating from Harvard, he continued to work there for the rest of his career. After a year of
fighting leukemia, Skinner died on August 18,1990. Skinner left a remarkable imprint on the
psychology world; by the time he died Skinner was named to be the utmost influential psychologist
in the 29th century, along with publishing a considerable amount of books and articles (Zorn, 2014).

B.F. Skinner: Legacy on Behaviorism
Burrhus Frederic Skinner was a famous American psychologist, born on March 20th, 1904 to the
parents of Grace and William Skinner. His father was a lawyer and his mother a homemaker, raised
him and his younger brother Edward in the little town of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. His brother
whom was two and half years younger than him died at the age of sixteen due to a cerebral
hemorrhage. Despite this though, Frederic described his youth as stable and warm. As a child,
Skinner was fascinated in building and inventing things such as a cabin and a steam cannon that
could shoot carrots and potatoes. He also was very interested in animals and adored teaching his
Pigeons to perform various tricks. Unique talents of his were an indication of the skills he would
later use in his own psychological experiments. He attended an extremely small high school,
graduating with a group of a seven other students. He was not a religious person and became an
atheist after a Christian teacher attempted to rid his fear of the frightening hell that is grandmother
portrayed. After high school, Skinner attended Hamilton College in New York in hopes of becoming

Important Events In Psychology Essay
Since the time of psychology's origins in the 1500 's where Leonardo da Vinci 's stated that there
might be a relationship between the human brain and a person 's psychological processes,
psychology history and research has grown tremendously over centuries. Some of the most
important events in psychology includes: William Wundt creating the first psychology lab in
Germany to the American psychiatric Association (APA) publishing the first Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). These events and many more have advanced the
field of psychology, yet I found two other events in psychology history that caught my attention the
most: G. Stanley Hall who established the first psychology lab in the United States at John Hopkins
University and B.F skinner developing a theory called operant condition on animals through
reinforcement and punishment. Both events are important to the growth of psychology. in the
development of the discipline of psychology. One of the most significant event in US psychology
was when G. Stanley Hall created the first psychology lab in the United States t John Hopkins
University. The reason why this event was so significant was because Hall brought scientific
research to the United States of America in 1883. Because of Hall's psychology lab he was able to
"begin to publish his own journal, The American Journal of Psychology, in the fall of 1887.
(Bringmann)". G. Stanley Hall was known for his work and interest in the history

The Theories Of Language Acquisition
Behaviourism, one of the earliest scientific explanations of language acquisition was greatly
influenced by theorist B.F Skinner (1957). The techniques of this learning theory have long been
absorbed in the education setting to promote behaviours that are desirable and to dishearten those
who are not (Stanbridge, 2014). As one of the developers of behaviorism B.F. Skinner (1957)
accounted for language development by means of environmental influence, particularly a child's
reaction to reward and punishment. Skinner justified that behaviours that are rewarded, would be
repeated, but behaviours that are disciplined or ignored will lessen. B.F Skinner (1957) also
recognised two types of reinforcement, positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement, and
explained how these strategies can strengthen the behaviour that follows. Skinner described positive
reinforcement as a behaviour being followed by the presentation of a positive stimulus, thus the
behaviour then increases (Hannum, 2006). For example, when a baby says 'Ma, ma' for the first
time, we naturally get very excited and repeat the sounds back to the child, reinforcing the behaviour
which makes it more likely for the child to produce that word again. (Centre for Learning
Innovation, 2006, p. 8) This is called positive reinforcement. Naturally, children seek approval from
people or teachers they admire and work for things that bring them a positive atmosphere (Cherry,
2015). By smiling, praising and commending the

In September Skinner began his classes at Harvard. He was enrolled in Physiology 5; Physiology
20; Psychology 11; and elementary German due to a language requirement. During the period of
these classes Skinner found great joy in finding something through experimentation, and did many
experimental studies on the human consciousness and the study of animal intelligence. In this time
Skinner also made a gadget which later would play an important role in research, most widely
known as the Skinner box. The device was a silent release box, operated by compressed air and
designed to eliminate disturbances when a rat was introduced into a habitation. In his first year of
graduate school Skinner came close to changing his field from psychology to physiology. His
indecision was due to his belief that psychology was less scientific than physiology, and physiology
would allow the kind of experimenting he was more interested in. After deciding to stick with
studying psychology he passed his German and French exams required for his Ph.D. For the spring
term he was enrolled in one philosophy course and three psychology courses, his favorite being

The introduction has demonstrated the origins and influences of both reinforcement and behavioral

Skinners theory of human behavior and how it influenced and evolved reinforcement learning in
both education and behavior therapy today. Modern–day applications of Reinforcement learning in

behavior, but has been developed and extended in the field of machine learning as an approach to
Markov decision processes" (Ishii and Yoshida, 2006, p. 326). According to Andersen and Sandaker
(2010), "A reinforcer is a stimulus which affects the probability of the kind of behaviour that
produces it.? There can be both positive reinforcers and negative reinforcers. One where "behaviour

Skinner taught a rat to spend money in the form of glass marbles. The rat: pulled a chain to get a
marble, picked up the marble, carried the marble to a tube, dropped the marble in the tube, and lastly
was rewarded with food. The pigeons will then peck at the disc to get access to the food. "From
these studies, Skinner concluded that some form of reinforcement was crucial in learning new
behaviors." This is saying that there is some type of influence on behaviors from your environment
and "not involuntary responses to stimuli." Skinner was often portrayed in a negative light. For
example, a myth that he raised one of his daughters in a Skinner Box and performed experiments on
her gained traction. The truth was that Skinner, who loved inventing gadgets, had designed a warm,
enclosed, temperature–controlled bed/playpen for his daughter to sleep and play in without the need

For example, giving good grades on deserving assignments and tests, writing happy notes on papers,
and encouraging students to speak in class by saying "great job." I feel it is important to say
something positive to any class participant, even if what they say is not correct. By saying "good
thinking" to a wrong answer, I feel like I am encouraging participation. If I responded to a wrong
answer by saying, "no, sorry, you are way off" I am encouraging the student to not answer again.
Therefore, I am negatively reinforcing the student and the in the future, the student's behavior will

B.F. Skinner's theory can also be applied to technology. For example, I strongly support the use of

The Skinner 's Theory Of Self Awareness, And Moral...
B.F Skinner was one of the most intelligence physiologist and a man who borderline on frightening
traits for a physiologist when it came to creating learning theories, due to his cruelty towards his
experiments and the way he view society structured. Learning theories can be viewed as mental
concepts informing human beings or society, how information is gathered, processed, and how
individuals retained it during learning concepts. Skinner created concepts such as conditioned
behavior," positive reinforcement," and punishments for children who behavior was viewed as
menacing. This term is known as time–out for children today, their own version of the Pandora box
if parents choose that path. Moreover, as a radical psychologist among his fellow peers in their field,
Skinner departs from certain beliefs that challenge the notions of self–awareness and moral
autonomy of the individual. These particular main philosophies of science are known as dignity and
free–will. Skinner main cogent contribution to psychology was his theory that the consequences we
suffer in our human lives, are directly tied to our behavior along with our environment. As a
behaviorism who supports deterministic behaviorism, Skinner view free–will as unrealistic theory.
To illustrate, individuals can make their own ideals or choices, whether to act on their desires by
going against the law or not. That does not apply to medically insane or young individuals such as
infants or children who have come to

In his graduating class there were only eight people including him. He was a very intellectual

Behavioral Psychology and BF Skinner
There was never a man more influential to Behavioral psychology than B.F. Skinner. He was well–
acknowledged for his theories in behaviorism and remains as one of the best and most controversial
figures in the world of psychology. Most of his work throughout his lifetime dealt with both positive
and negative reinforcements and the after–effects it had on behavior. B.F. Skinner understood that as
humans, everything that we do or become is through the methods of rewards and punishments.
Though his time has long since passed, his ideology and his written works such as Walden II and
About Behaviorism have applied behavioral theories to society and are still studied today.

The Theory Of Behavioral Learning Theory
B. F. Skinner is one of the top psychologist who invented the radical behaviorism and critical
psychiatry. B. F. Skinner believed that behavior is maintained from one condition to another through
similar or same consequences across situations. Skinner believed that actions followed by a positive
effect tend to be repeated, while actions followed by negative effect were not. I believe the
behaviorist theory states that individuals develop certain behavior traits based off of their reaction to
certain events that they are presented with. This means that people act certain ways because of how
they handled situations that have occurred in their life. Introduction to Behavioral learning theory.
For example, inside the classroom, teachers could use this theory to help children behave correctly
and have a positive outlook on their schoolwork. By understanding the theory, teachers would
recognize that students need and want positive reinforcement. As a result of giving positive
reinforcement, students would continue to display the desired behavior. Skinner said that "radical
behaviorism emphasizes a functional level of analysis that may be contrasted with mainstream
psychology's emphasis on essentialism. Behaviorism is a theory mostly developed by B.F. Skinner.
Three basic assumptions are held to be true. Learning is manifested by the change in behavior, the
environment shapes behavior and the reinforcement essential in explaining the process of learning.

response. B.F Skinner studied opulent conditioning and this type of conditioning is dependent on the
positive or negative response that come from the consequences that an individual performs, which
falls in line with what Lorraine Hansberry is saying about school and degrees. Hansberry says that
there are no thoughts involved with the learning of facts and getting grades to pass a courser, and I

psychological problems back to sexual issues. Although only parts of his theory of psychosexual

Only later did he ask them to say whatever crossed their minds. This he called "free association,"

the father of Psychoanalysis, B.F. Skinner is often referred to ask the "the father of operant

B.F. Skinner, Sept, 2012). Skinner was a prolific author, publishing nearly 200 articles and more
than 20 books. Skinner was most known for his work in behavior psychology. Behavioral
psychology is the psychological practice that focuses on learning new behaviors and how to modify
our existing behavior and how that takes place (About B.F. Skinner, Sept, 2012). One of his major
contributions was his theory of operant conditioning. Operant conditioning means roughly, the
changing of behavior by the use of reinforcement, either positive or negative, and which these
reinforcements are given after the desired response (About B.F. Skinner, Sept, 2012). Skinner
identified three types of responses or operant that can follow behavior. While behaviorism is no
longer a dominant school of thought, the work in operant conditioning remains today. Many
different types of professionals utilize operant conditioning in society today. Mental health

Methods For Modifying Behavior And Behavior Modification

  • 1. Methods For Modifying Behavior And Behavior Modification Methods for Modifying Behavior in Children Behavior modification is a treatment technique used to tackle countless problems within children. When children are born discipline and growth comes from the parents. We teach right from wrong. Therefore, we are where the root of the behavior starts. Children must be correctly disciplined by the age of six because if not that child would most likely be a criminal. A child behavior rises from what they learn and their surroundings, so what we teach our children as well as what they see is what they take with them throughout life. When parents apply these particular elements of techniques, they can work with their children to swap improper or disagreeable behavior. B.F Skinner proposed that behavior ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Skinner created what he called an operant conditioning apparatus that later was referred to as the "skinner box." The Skinner box is a compartment that enclosed a key that an animal had access to when they wanted water, food, or even reinforcement. Skinner was the number one believer that children react to rewards and gifts. He believed that you had the ability to make a child do whatever you want when you give them things. Methods for Modifying Behavior There are numerous of methods for modifying your children's behavior. Three of the best methods for modifying behavior in children are rewarding, setting consequences and boundaries. When children portray good behavior at home or in school you reward them. Whether it is gifts, privileges, money or just letting them stay up late because they have done something good inspires the child to continue doing well. They will then want to continue that behavior so he or she can continue to receive rewards. Gifts or rewards should be given to children for good behavior it shows them is they maintain good behavior they will receive rewards. As a parent, you have to reinforce rules with children. You must show children that things given to them as a privilege can be taken away when they misbehave or do something he or she is not suppose to. Taking things away from a child is the number one consequence that can occur. If a child loves a particular game system, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Positive Change In World Through Manipulation of Behavior... Positive Change In World Through Manipulation of Behavior in B.F Skinner's Waldo Two B.F. Skinner, in his novel Walden Two, presents many arguments about how he foresees a positive change in the world through manipulation of behavior on the personal level. Sigmund Freud, in his works, specifically Civilization and Its Discontents, presents his view of human nature and what is innately problematic about it. Both Freud and Skinner agree that human behavior is the result of outside factors that severely hinder the concept of free will. Skinner believes that humans, in the correct environment, can live happily, while Freud understands that humans are destined to live in "some degree of anguish or discontent." Skinner ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Skinner wants to use this notion to create a world without pain and suffering. In Walden Two, he systematically describes what conditions are necessary to create a world of happiness. Skinner proposes that to create his perfect society, one needs only to come up with the characteristics of what man should be. Since he can then create any man, he will fill the world with these perfectly–conditioned people and all will be perfect. Although many of his insights are problematic at the root level, some of what Skinner proposes is material which should not just be totally dismissed. Freud has a much different concept of human existence. He, too, says that people are "formed" out of experiences and pre–existent conditions. However, Freud believes that the biggest factor in shaping human behavior is much more personal and internal. Since everyone experiences things differently, he claims, it is impossible to shape everyone so that some utopian society will form, as in Skinner's case. Freud recognizes on one level that there is an innate conflict between the individual and society. So even at the first level, there is a conflict which will hinder happiness. Freud states that the norms of society are much too rigorous for the common person because they are in conflict with the inner desires of the psyche. Keep in mind, this has nothing ... • 5. How Did Bf Skinner Use Operant Conditioning Burrhus Frederic (B.F.) Skinner was born on March 20, 1904. Skinner lived 86 years passing away on August 18, 1990. He was born in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania to William and Grace Skinner. His father was a lawyer, while his mother stayed home to care for Skinner and his younger brother. Skinner being 18 lost his 16–year–old brother of a cerebral hemorrhage. At a young age, Skinner showed an interest in building different gadgets and contraptions. Skinner attended Hamilton College in New York looking to become a writer. Skinner became an atheist after a Christian teacher tried to soften his fear of the hell his grandmother described. After finishing his B.A. in English literature, Skinner started attending Harvard University. This is where he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Skinner was at Harvard, he invented what he called an operant conditioning apparatus, known as the Skinner Box. By using this device, Skinner could study an animal interacting with its environment. He started off by studying rodents in the experiments, examining how the rats discovered and used a lever in the box that dispensed food at different times. Skinner then started experimenting with pigeons, using the box. The pigeons pecked at a disc to gain access to food. By conducting these tests Skinner came to the decision that some form of reinforcement was crucial in learning new behaviors. While researching at Harvard, Skinner pronounced the results of his operant conditioning experiments in the Behavior of Organisms (1938). Skinner became the chair of the psychology department at Indiana University in 1945. He decided to leave two years later to return to Harvard as a speaker. In 1948, Skinner then received the opportunity to become a professor there in where he remained for the rest of his career. Watching his children grow up, he his interest in education increased. Skinner industrialized a teaching technique to study learning in children. Skinner later wrote The Technology of Teaching ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Summary Of ' Walden Two ( 1948 ) B.F. Skinner is an American Psychologist from Pennsylvania who developed the idea of Behaviorism after studying at Harvard University (Biography.com Editors, n.d.). He is also known for his works such as, The Behavior of Organisms (1938), the novel Walden Two (1948), and later Beyond Freedom and Human Dignity (1971) which examines behaviorism in society (Biography.com Editors, n.d.). Burrhus Frederic Skinner was born and raised in Susquehanna, a little town in Pennsylvania on March 20,1904 (B.F. Skinner Foundation, 2014;Biography.com Editors, n.d.). He was an imaginative and inventive child that built different mechanism which included, a cart that steered backwards, a perpetual motion machine, and a flotation device that separated ripe from unripe fruit (B.F. Skinner Foundation, 2014). As he grew older, he also showed an interest in writing, and the ideas of Francis Bacon, whose ideas of inductive reasoning influenced Skinner (B.F. Skinner Foundation, 2014). According to the B.F. Skinner Foundation (2014) once in college Skinner chose to be a writer, he attended Hamilton and after graduating returned home and wrote a few articles which brought him little to no success. He later moved to New York and worked as a bookstore clerk where he stumbled upon the works of Pavlov and Watson, they held an impression on him and he strived to learn more (B.F. Skinner Foundation, 2014). Therefor, Skinner decided to attend Harvard University's Department of Psychology (B.F. Skinner ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Essay about B.F. Skinner B.F. Skinner Psychologist, born in Susquhanna, Pa. He studied at Harvard, teaching there (1931–6, 1947–74). A leading behaviorist, he is a proponent of operant conditioning, and the inventor of the Skinner box for facilitating experimental observations. B. F. Skinner's entire system is based on operant conditioning. The organism is in the process of "operating" on the environment, which in ordinary terms means it is bouncing around the world, doing what it does. During this "operating," the organism encounters a special kind of stimulus, called a reinforcing stimulus, or simply a reinforcer. This special stimulus has the effect of increasing the operant – which is the behavior occurring just before the reinforcer. This is operant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Or "x" times. There is a fixed ratio between behaviors and reinforcers: 3 to 1, 5 to 1, 20 to 1, etc. This is a little like "piece rate" in the clothing manufacturing industry: You get paid so much for so many shirts. Skinner also looked at variable schedules. Variable ratio means you change the "x" each time first it takes 3 tricks to get a treat, then 10, then 1, then 7 and so on. Variable interval means you keep changing the time period –– first 20 seconds, then 5, then 35, then 10 and so on. In both cases, it keeps the dog on their little toes. With the variable interval schedule, they no longer "pace" themselves, because they no can no longer establish a "rhythm" between behavior and reward. Most importantly, these schedules are very resistant to extinction. It makes sense, if you think about it. If you haven't gotten a reinforcer for a while, well, it could just be that you are at a particularly "bad" ratio or interval. A question Skinner had to deal with was how we get to more complex sorts of behaviors. He responded with the idea of shaping, or "the method of successive approximations." Basically, it involves first reinforcing a behavior only vaguely similar to the one desired. Once that is established, you look out for variations that come a little closer to what you want, and so on, until you have the animal performing a behavior that would never show up in ordinary life. Skinner and his students have been quite successful in teaching simple animals to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At Hamilton College he felt that he didn't fit in with others, he didn't party or hang out with other students. However he graduated in 1926 with his BA in English. Skinner worked in writing newspapers and articles, but didn't feel that he was such a success in what he was doing. He resigned and decided to pursue a different direction in his life. He went back to studying but this time in Harvard University to study Psychology, he got his masters and doctorate and stayed there to do researches and finally he graduated in 1936.

  • 14. B F Skinner Sparknotes This chapter is centered on researcher B.F Skinner, who was known for highlighting rewards and reinforcements through animal experiments. He also demonstrated operant conditioning through positive reinforcements. Today, many individuals possess both a negative and a positive view of Skinner and his experiments (ranging from evil to highest esteem respectively). This may be due to the difficulty of "separating content from controversy"(8). Skinner was born in 1904 and can be identified for many quirks such as working only on a cluttered desk. He went onto go and study psychology at Harvard in 1928, rather than taking up his desire of becoming a novelist. Despite initially avoiding the softer psychology fields, Skinner came across a psychology workshop ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, many others viewed it to be much more frightening (as suggested by the name "Heir Conditioner"). Towards the end of the chapter, Slater attempts to find Skinner's box daughter and comes into contact with one of his daughters, Julie. As Slater attempted to ask questions about Skinner, Julie dismissed any negative claims of her father and mentioned how her sister Deborah, the alleged dead child, is alive and doing well. As the conversation escalated, Julie ends the conversation by asking if Slater read Beyond Freedom and Dignity by Skinner and she agrees to actually meet and talk with Slater once Slater read the book. Beyond Freedom and Dignity suggests how "Skinner is clearly proposing a humane social policy rooted in his experimental findings" and how "man exists irrefutably in relationship to his environment and can never be free of it" (28). Once Slater finished the book, she was able to visit Julie in B.F Skinner's home and take a look inside his study. Everything in the study was preserved in its original state, such as books, manuscripts and a piece of chocolate that Skinner bit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Who Is B. F. Skinner Operant Conditioning INFLUENTIAL FIGURES IN PSYCHOLOGY B.F Skinner Have you ever thought about what will happen when a child makes a mistake and gets punished for it? Next time when he tries again to do the same thing he will do less and less. This is a theory that B.F. Skinner based his operations on, called operant conditioning. B.F. Skinner was a leading "behaviorist," who rejected introspection and studied how consequences shape behavior. Introspection is the self–observation of one's conscious. Burrhus Frederic Skinner was born on March 20, 1904 in Susquehanna Depot, Pennsylvania. He grew up in an active household, his mother being a tough and bright housewife and his father a hard–working lawyer. As a child, B.F. Skinner was active, outgoing, and intelligent, he loved school. After B.F. Skinner successfully graduated from high school, he enrolled at Hamilton College in New York. Later on, he decided to go back to school this time at Harvard University to study psychology. B.F. Skinner had a wife and two daughters. One of the daughters was famous for being experimented in her father's invention "the Skinner box." The "air crib," better known as "the Skinner box," is an invention inspired by Skinner's wife. It would keep the baby from crying by allowing the temperature to be just right for the baby. B.F. Skinner's main finding in psychology was "the operant conditioning" theory. Here the individual is in the course of working in a situation where he or she is retreating in his or her own ... • 18. B. F. Skinner's Influence On The Field Of Psychology B.F. Skinner "The consequences of behavior determine the probability that the behavior will occur again," said B. F. Skinner (Cherry, 2014). This is a quote that greatly affected Skinners experiments and influences in the psychology world. Burrhus Fredrick Skinner or also known as B.F. Skinner was born on March 20, 1904 in Pennsylvania. As a boy, he enjoyed creating and conceiving ideas that later lead to his interests in the psychological realm. He graduated from Hamilton College although not knowing what he wanted to do. Skinner began a career as a writer and author; he then decided to pursue psychology at Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard, he continued to work there for the rest of his career. The experiments he performed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The example Skinner uses with the rat and the consequence of it getting food each time it accidently hit the lever, meant it would repeat the action, known as positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement reinforces the behavior by having a consequence that is rewarding, which is very effective. Another way to reinforce a behavior is by negative reinforcement which ends or eliminates an unpleasant experience. Skinner placed a rat in the Skinner Box and would cause it discomfort by an electric current. If the rat would hit the lever, the current would turn off. The rat soon learned to go straight to the lever after just a few times of being in the box (Mcleod, 2007). These concepts were what Skinner believed to be taking place and what lead to his approach of behaviorism. Behaviorism is a theory that human or animal psychology can be studied through examination of observable behavioral events. Behavior is a subject matter in its own right, it is also the functioning of an organism that entails communication or exchanges with its environmental settings (Moore, 2011). Skinner believes that to discover behavior, we should watch actions rather than study mind and emotion. See how beings act in their natural environment and how their behaviors can be changed was Skinners theory which researchers still study ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Skinner) was born on March 20, 1904 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania (Boeree, n.d., para. 1). Skinner's father was a lawyer while his mother stayed home to care for Skinner and his siblings. He spent much of his childhood building various machines and devices, including a failed attempt to build a perpetual motion machine (Kaiga, 2012, para.4). In a biography about B.F. Skinner, Dr. C. Skinner moved back to his parents' home and built a study to conduct his writings (Kaiga, 2012, para.4). After some time as a writer, Skinner soon returned to school, studying psychology at Harvard University (Boeree, n.d., para. 5). In 1930, Skinner received his Master's degree followed by his PhD in 1936 (Boeree, n.d., para. 5). Later that year, Skinner moved to the University of Minnesota to teach (Swenson, 1999, para. 6). Skinner is also known for his work on the "baby box", an attempt at mechanizing the care of a child, following the death of his second child (Swenson, 1999, para. 7). The box would maintain a certain temperature while only wearing a diaper (Swenson, 1999, para. 7).The box has led to what is now known as an "air crib" (Swenson, 1999, para. 7). Operant Conditioning While at Harvard, Skinner developed an operant conditioning apparatus to study behavior in a more objective and measured way (Kaiga, 2012, para. 6). The apparatus could be used to observe animals and how they interact with their environment (Kaiga, 2012, para. 6). Skinner experimented with rats that had to pull a lever in the box to dispense food at different intervals (Kaiga, 2012, para. 6). Skinner's is regarded as the father of Operant conditioning while his work was based on Thorndike's law of effect (Kaiga, 2012, para. 6). • 22. Bf Skinner Theory The Life of B.F. Skinner One of the most prominent and influential psychologists of the twentieth century, B.F. Skinner was known as a behavioral psychologist, philosopher of science, and an educational innovator. Throughout his life he did experimental work with animals to discover how patterns of behavior are learned. His initial work was primarily conducted with animals, and later in life he started to work with humans and apply his learning from his pigeon studies to human behavior. He focused on the individual and wrote about how to restructure social systems to improve the quality of life. Three major events in the early twentieth century greatly influenced Skinner's work: Darwin's theory of evolution, Freud's psychoanalysis, and Pavlov's approach to conditioning. Darwin asserted that all life forms evolved from simple forms and that the selection of characteristics contribute to the survival of each individual. Skinner believed that Darwin's ideas could be applied to behaviorism and coined the idea of "selection by consequences" to explain why people act how they act. Psychoanalysis began in the early 1900s and Freud focused on the idea that people are driven by their unconscious and that adult behaviors are formed in childhood. Skinner agreed with a few of Freud's ideas; both psychologists believed that behavior has predictable effects and is not a result of free will. However, Skinner rejected Freud's idea that the id, ego, and superego cause behavior. Pavlov's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"At an early age, Skinner showed an interest in building different gadgets and contraptions" ("B.F. Skinner Biography", 2016). Skinner attended Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and it was here that he cultivated his immense passion for writing. Skinner was an experimental scientist, an atheist, and is touted as the father of strict behaviorism. He felt at his core that people are socially conditioned, and this belief permeated his entire career. He expected nothing from religion and felt that faith in God was utterly futile. He based his science of behaviorism upon determinism, viewing human beings as mere programmed robots without free will, thus maintaining a perspective that saw no need for the role of religion and a divine power. He did hold to a strict moral code and made an honest effort to live according to "moral" principles, but he viewed spirituality as a myth and simply irrational. To him, it was a mere state of positive emotion. His harsh view of religion originated in a childhood fear of religion invoked by his grandmother's constant threat of hell, and this resulted in a view of the relationship between God and man as strictly punitive (Chirban, 2014). "It was evident that religion failed to provide Skinner with a positive self image and an understanding of the world that had led him to exclude God from his pursuit of Truth thought to seek the design of a positive world scientifically" (Chirban, 2014). • 26. The Theory Of Behaviorism And Operant Conditioning B.F Skinner Renowned American psychologist B.F. Skinner, well known for his theory on behaviorism and operant conditioning. He was the most influential 20th – century psychologist. His works includes "The Behavior of Organisms" (1938) which was about the results in his experiment with operant conditioning, and a novel based on his theories "Walden" (1948). He was not only a psychologist he was a behaviorist, teacher, author, inventor, and a social philosopher as well. Born as Burrhus Frederic Skinner, in a small town of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. As a young boy he was active, out–going who loved the outdoors and was fascinated in building gadgets and contraptions. As he grew up, in 1926 Skinner attended Hamilton College in New York, where broaden a passion for writing, but he did not have much success with writing. So he made the decision to pursue psychology at Harvard University. After Skinner earned his doctorate at Harvard, he started working and developed ideas of human behavior. He was influenced by the work of John B. Watson and Ivan Pavlov as well. During his time at Harvard he wanted a verifiable way to study psychology. In result, he developed a machine called "Operant Conditioning" in 1937, known as the Skinner Box. Skinner's theory was that the external behavior should be observed only, he was more focused on how the consequences can impact a person's behavior. He wanted to analyze how a consequences of a behavior can increase and decrease. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It enforces and recognizes good behavior in many different circumstances, whether it is used on prison inmates which good behavior is rewarded with incentives, giving your animal a treat for doing a trick or if it is a golden star for a child's good work done. The famous works of B.F Skinner is heavily involved with behavior modification and the idea that you can condition a human being to have favorable behavioral traits. The claims and experiments that Skinner founded are still being taught in today's psychology classes. A claim from the book Beyond Freedom and Dignity by Skinner (1971) himself says "In short, we need to make vast changes in human behavior, and we cannot make them with the help of nothing," (4) and leads to say that "when human behavior begins, technology stops, and that we must carry on, as we have in the past, with what we have learned from personal experience or from those collections of personal experiences called history..."(Skinner,1971, p.6.). With behavior modification we need to take a psychological approach as Skinner had mentioned in his book that when human behavior begins, technology ends. The brain responds to stimulus and if the brain responds to reward, then it would turn into a learned behavior. He also believed that the best way to look at and understand behavior was to look at the causes of an action and the consequence that follows. Skinner and his students have been quite successful in teaching simple animals to do some quite extraordinary things. I actually seen my mother use shaping on my brother once, when I now think about it. When we were younger, my brother was afraid of the dark so he liked to keep his bedroom door cracked open with the hall light shining through. Skinner's Concept of Verbal Behavior One of the most influential members of the behaviorist movement, as well as among psychologists who study human development was B.F. Skinner (Diessner, 2008, p. 134). Skinner was notable for his description of the acquisition of new behavior through the use of reinenforcement and punishment called operant conditioning (Diessner, 2008). Skinner also contributed his behaviorist explanation of language development through his concept of verbal behavior (Diessner, 2008). To Skinner verbal behavior is basically a behavior which is "reinenforced through the mediation of others" (Skinner, 1957, p. 2) and ultimately the speaker by applying controlling variables of operant conditioning principles (Burk, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An explanation of this can be since in the preoperational stage a child's ideas are based on their perceptions and only focus on one variable at a time, like the smaller containers of liquid (Mooney, 2000). In the second stage of "Intermediary Reactions" which would be the transition between the preoperational stage and the concrete operational stage, behaviors not displayed by all children was noted (Diessner, 2008). First, some children were able to assume that the quantity of liquid would not change when poured from the one tall beaker into the two smaller glasses, but when more glasses were introduced the child went back to the prior stage belief of nonconservation (Diessner, 2008). Another reaction to the experiment was that the child accepted the concept of conservation but as soon as the quantity was greater the child became uncertain (Diessner, 2008). An explanation for these reactions can be that as the child transitions from preoperational to concrete operational stage their ideas of reasoning are still developing (Mooney, 2000). Finally in stage 3 "Necessary Conservation" corresponds to Piaget's concrete operational stage of cognitive development (Diessner, 2008). This is a quote that is very popular and was a prime description of those Skinners experiments were meant to prove along with it being a saying that many people in the psychology world followed. Important Events In Psychology Essay Since the time of psychology's origins in the 1500 's where Leonardo da Vinci 's stated that there might be a relationship between the human brain and a person 's psychological processes, psychology history and research has grown tremendously over centuries. Some of the most important events in psychology includes: William Wundt creating the first psychology lab in Germany to the American psychiatric Association (APA) publishing the first Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). These events and many more have advanced the field of psychology, yet I found two other events in psychology history that caught my attention the most: G. Stanley Hall who established the first psychology lab in the United States at John Hopkins University and B.F skinner developing a theory called operant condition on animals through reinforcement and punishment. Both events are important to the growth of psychology. in the development of the discipline of psychology. One of the most significant event in US psychology was when G. Stanley Hall created the first psychology lab in the United States t John Hopkins University. The reason why this event was so significant was because Hall brought scientific research to the United States of America in 1883. Because of Hall's psychology lab he was able to "begin to publish his own journal, The American Journal of Psychology, in the fall of 1887. (Bringmann)". G. • 46. The Theories Of Language Acquisition Behaviourism, one of the earliest scientific explanations of language acquisition was greatly influenced by theorist B.F Skinner (1957). The techniques of this learning theory have long been absorbed in the education setting to promote behaviours that are desirable and to dishearten those who are not (Stanbridge, 2014). As one of the developers of behaviorism B.F. Skinner (1957) accounted for language development by means of environmental influence, particularly a child's reaction to reward and punishment. Skinner justified that behaviours that are rewarded, would be repeated, but behaviours that are disciplined or ignored will lessen. B.F Skinner (1957) also recognised two types of reinforcement, positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement, and explained how these strategies can strengthen the behaviour that follows. Skinner described positive reinforcement as a behaviour being followed by the presentation of a positive stimulus, thus the behaviour then increases (Hannum, 2006). For example, when a baby says 'Ma, ma' for the first time, we naturally get very excited and repeat the sounds back to the child, reinforcing the behaviour which makes it more likely for the child to produce that word again. (Centre for Learning Innovation, 2006, p. 8) This is called positive reinforcement. Naturally, children seek approval from people or teachers they admire and work for things that bring them a positive atmosphere (Cherry, 2015). By smiling, praising and commending the ... Professor Burris remembers that Frazier is one of his classmates from graduate school. When Rodge mentions his interest in a utopian community that was showed by Frazier, Burris was shocked. He immediately looked up to his old directory and saw that Frazier is living in a place called "Walden Two". Burris agreed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 66. The Skinner 's Theory Of Self Awareness, And Moral... B.F Skinner was one of the most intelligence physiologist and a man who borderline on frightening traits for a physiologist when it came to creating learning theories, due to his cruelty towards his experiments and the way he view society structured. Learning theories can be viewed as mental concepts informing human beings or society, how information is gathered, processed, and how individuals retained it during learning concepts. Skinner created concepts such as conditioned behavior," positive reinforcement," and punishments for children who behavior was viewed as menacing. This term is known as time–out for children today, their own version of the Pandora box if parents choose that path. Moreover, as a radical psychologist among his fellow peers in their field, Skinner departs from certain beliefs that challenge the notions of self–awareness and moral autonomy of the individual. These particular main philosophies of science are known as dignity and free–will. Skinner main cogent contribution to psychology was his theory that the consequences we suffer in our human lives, are directly tied to our behavior along with our environment. As a behaviorism who supports deterministic behaviorism, Skinner view free–will as unrealistic theory. To illustrate, individuals can make their own ideals or choices, whether to act on their desires by going against the law or not. That does not apply to medically insane or young individuals such as infants or children who have come to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Behavioral Psychology and BF Skinner There was never a man more influential to Behavioral psychology than B.F. Skinner. He was well– acknowledged for his theories in behaviorism and remains as one of the best and most controversial figures in the world of psychology. Most of his work throughout his lifetime dealt with both positive and negative reinforcements and the after–effects it had on behavior. B.F. Skinner understood that as humans, everything that we do or become is through the methods of rewards and punishments. Though his time has long since passed, his ideology and his written works such as Walden II and About Behaviorism have applied behavioral theories to society and are still studied today. Burrhus Frederic Skinner – more commonly known as B.F. Skinner, was born on March 20th, 1904 in a Pennsylvanian town named Susquehanna. As a young boy, Skinner was very out–going who enjoyed tinkering and building contraptions (Burrhus Frederic Skinner, 2014). His original passion was with writing and he moved to New York in the late 1920s to pursue this writing career in Hamilton College (B.F. Skinner (1904–1990), 2014). Unfortunately, Hamilton College had views that contradicted with Skinner's as he was an atheist and Hamilton College required a daily chapel attendance (B.F Skinner (1904–1990), 2014). He frequently published articles that criticized the school and its administration and his constant critical nature would become his occupation for the rest of his life. B.F. • 72. The Theory Of Behavioral Learning Theory B. F. Skinner is one of the top psychologist who invented the radical behaviorism and critical psychiatry. B. F. Skinner believed that behavior is maintained from one condition to another through similar or same consequences across situations. Skinner believed that actions followed by a positive effect tend to be repeated, while actions followed by negative effect were not. I believe the behaviorist theory states that individuals develop certain behavior traits based off of their reaction to certain events that they are presented with. This means that people act certain ways because of how they handled situations that have occurred in their life. Introduction to Behavioral learning theory. For example, inside the classroom, teachers could use this theory to help children behave correctly and have a positive outlook on their schoolwork. By understanding the theory, teachers would recognize that students need and want positive reinforcement. As a result of giving positive reinforcement, students would continue to display the desired behavior. Skinner said that "radical behaviorism emphasizes a functional level of analysis that may be contrasted with mainstream psychology's emphasis on essentialism. Behaviorism is a theory mostly developed by B.F. Skinner. Three basic assumptions are held to be true. Learning is manifested by the change in behavior, the environment shapes behavior and the reinforcement essential in explaining the process of learning. For behaviorism learning ... • 74. Bf Skinner Quote Analysis I think that B.F Skinner would agree with the quote "It's simple. You read books–to learn facts–to get grades–to pass the course–to get a degree. It has nothing to do with thoughts."(Lorraine Hansberry) as he was the father of behaviorism and studied how different stimuluses produced a response. B.F Skinner studied opulent conditioning and this type of conditioning is dependent on the positive or negative response that come from the consequences that an individual performs, which falls in line with what Lorraine Hansberry is saying about school and degrees. Hansberry says that there are no thoughts involved with the learning of facts and getting grades to pass a courser, and I think that B.F Skinner would agree as this could be considered ... Behavioral psychology is the psychological practice that focuses on learning new behaviors and how to modify our existing behavior and how that takes place (About B.F. Skinner, Sept, 2012). One of his major contributions was his theory of operant conditioning. Operant conditioning means roughly, the changing of behavior by the use of reinforcement, either positive or negative, and which these reinforcements are given after the desired response (About B.F. Skinner, Sept, 2012). Skinner identified three types of responses or operant that can follow behavior. While behaviorism is no longer a dominant school of thought, the work in operant conditioning remains today. Many different types of professionals utilize operant conditioning in society today.
