Examination of Delphi and Quasi-experimental Research Designs
Research plays a vital role in more deeply understanding library science. Thoughtful consideration of how
evidence–based research is conducted is essential to its effective use. Research helps professionals identify and
explore areas of concern or interest in addition to providing possible solutions for known problems. The Delphi and
quasi–experimental studies provide examples of research performed in library science.
The Delphi Study The Delphi study was developed by The RAND Corporation in the 1950s for the Air Force and
was primarily used to forecast future events based on expert opinions (Wildemuth, 2009). Delphi studies provide an
alternative to the traditional round–table type discussion (Cypher & Gant, 1971). The Delphi design ... Show more

These numbers were identical for round three. In total, 268 books and 34 journals were ranked with the top 100
representing items recommended for a core CME library.
This study focused on gathering information on books from its expert panel and does exemplify several areas of a
Delphi study. First, the researchers nominated a panel to recruit experts and make sure the instruments used were
clear. To reduce bias, any book or journal affiliated with a panel member was eliminated. Demographics were noted
by sub–groups, and each panel member was asked to rate his expertise. A minimum number of votes (10) was used
as a cutoff for books indicated as most helpful to novice learners. In addition, each panel member was asked to
waive anonymity with names published in the report. Forty–three members agreed.
The Quasi–experimental Study A quasi–experimental study is a subcategory of experimental design where
randomization of participants is not possible or not needed (Wildemuth, 2009). These studies occur in natural
settings when limited control over the variables is possible. The independent variable (treatment) is manipulated to
see if a causal relationship exists (Haas & Kraft, 1984). Naturally occurring groups such as classes are generally
used. The goal is "to produce reliable causal knowledge" (Haas & Kraft, p. 229). Internal and external validity are
important to this design. Internal validity is determined when

Managing Library Education Essay
Managing Library Education Managing for change is just as controversial in library schools as it is in
corporations. The advances in technology over the past decades have forced library schools to educate
technologically astute librarians. At the same time, many educators fear that the emphasis on technology may be
eroding the concepts of service that have always been a part of the profession. The issue of incorporating
technologies into a core curriculum without eviscerating the historical and ethical portion of the professional
education has been debated widely. The question is how can the library schools bring technology into the program
and still keep the traditional aspects which are important to the profession and to the accrediting ... Show more

Thomas Childers of Drexel (1998) had little sympathy for educators bemoaning the demise of the "L" word.He
blamed the library schools for failing to see that by clinging to old ways they were creating a situation where
students did not want to be associated with libraries, but rather wanted to be able to compete in what he called the
"hard information systems" area.Cronin, Stiffler, and Day (1993) noted that many information professionals thought
the MLS degree was out of sync with the new information environment. In these writers' view, the library schools
were going to have to change not only their curriculum, but also their culture.A more entrepreneurial attitude to
providing information needed to be cultivated, and more acceptance given to the ever–widening employment scope
of information professionals. The impetus for the shunning of the "L" word may come from the fact that the public
perception of librarians is not always as cutting–edge technology wizards, although librarians have been in the
forefront of interconnectedness since before the World Wide Web gave the concept glamour. In fact, the technology
world that library educators seem to fear offending by use of the "L" word, often use the "L" word, offering Digital
Libraries and Resource Libraries on countless websites. The names by which library and information science
schools are called is far less important than the content of the educational

Viele, P. (2012). Information fluency: Where to start. The Physics Teacher, 50(6), 379–380. doi:10.1119/1.4745701
Summary: According to Viele (2012), she states that when it comes to information literacy, there seems to be an
abundance of definitions. The most concise and all–encompassing meaning is that information fluency is a set of
skills necessitating individuals to be able to distinguish when and what actual information is needed. The author
states that an individual should be capable to effectively locate, evaluate, and use the needed information in making
informed decisions that are invaluable throughout life. In any situation whether it be preparing a presentation for
class, a poster, or writing a report, these steps should be completed in an ethical manner. In the article, the author
breaks down each of the information fluency skills in component parts. She also provides explanations of how to do
each with online tutorials links, helpful websites, and examples for reference of good places to start when making
sure that each skill is preformed effectively.
Critique: Retired as a physics and astronomy librarian at Cornell University, Patricia Viele, has worked with Cornell
faculty, students and numerous K–12 teachers for many years. The article focused on good starting places of

ALA Code Of Ethics
The SJSU iSchool's MLIS Program coursework requires that students demonstrate awareness of the ethics, values,
and foundational principles of one of the information professions, and discuss the importance of intellectual
freedom within that profession. The standard of professional conduct within library culture in America is set by the
American Library Association's Code of Ethics. The ALA Code of Ethics "translates the values of intellectual
freedom that define the profession of librarianship into broad principles that may be used by individual members of
that profession as well as by others employed in a library as a framework for dealing with situations involving
ethical conflicts" (ALA, 2008). It is important for librarians to be unified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Impact Of Advancements Of Robotic Technology Essay
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of the advancements of robotic technology in libraries. It
provides a literature–based background on the general state of robotics and adds insights related to the library
setting. Additionally, it looks into the factors that libraries need to consider when planning to acquire robots,
including finances, staff and technical knowledge, space and charging facilities. Finally, it provides a quick look at
how this technology will affect both the libraries and communities. I. Introduction The concept of "robots" has been
with humans for a long time. From the "robot–knight" plan of Leonardo da Vinci to the automatons of Jacques de
Vaucanson, to the robots created by several robotics companies, people have demonstrated a fascination. The word
robot came from the Czech word, "robota" which means "forced labor". In 1921, writer Karel Capek used it in his
play entitled Rossum's Universal Robots (R.U.R.). The credit for coming up with such term, however, goes to Josef
Capek, his brother. Presently, robot means a machine that performs complex actions, similar to humans or other
animals; also a machine that can perform repetitive tasks, guided by automatic controls. (Shulman & Buckley,
2014). Advances in technology have allowed the world to move forward in the creation of these machines for
various purposes. Libraries, being both learning and cultural hubs of societies, have unique opportunities to
introduce the idea of robots.

A Study On Becoming A Librarian
Introduction
There is more than one type of librarian and they play many roles this day and age. They were once thought of as
being the keeper of knowledge and were the go to persons for any and everything. Some specialize in areas of
interest such as cataloging, allocation, archives, and even special collections. While others, depending on what type
of library they work in conduct all of the above job functions and more. With the advancement of technology and its
forever growing spear, librarians are being expected to know–how no matter the size of the duty or request.

263). How much technology should a librarian be able to understand and implement in their daily duties? Is
learning the basics of technology enough or should librarians have extensive training and knowledge in the
advancement of technology as well as becoming involved with its ever increasing span? These are just a few of the
examples of what is being sought after from librarians when being considered for positions. A librarian should have
a holistic approach to working within the field and become forever students of learning the newest technology. This,
in fact, will allow them to become more marketable when seeking employment in various venues of the library
world.
Training and Education
Whether it is a public librarian, academic librarian, a law librarian, a librarian working in the business field, or a
medical librarian, it is the norm for librarians to understand the dynamics of technology. Not only are librarians
required to have knowledge of the newest technology, they are also being required to be able to use it. Sometimes
there is a gap in what is being taught to future librarians in their school programs and what is being required of them
within the job sector. In order to sustain as a competitor within the workforce, librarians need to be prepared to
reach beyond the classroom guidance along with teaching and seek outside resources for further educational

Finally, it will end with the opportunities and challenges that are facing China's libraries. Through this paper, we
will gain a general understanding of China's growing library system as they take steps to secure its advancement in
society. China's Libraries: The Influence of a Large Population China, a country with such a rich history, has long
been identified by its significantly large population. When one thinks of China some of the first images that come to
mind are the unique architecture, the traditional dress, splendid dynasties, internationally acclaimed philosophies,
and high educational standards. It was noted by Wasserstrom (2013) that the most emphasized moralities from the
Analects are education, ritual, and hierarchal relationships. These three important factors are such values that, to
this day, they have a significant influence on Chinese culture. In addition to its rich culture and values, this country
has the honor of holding the largest population in the world. The current population of this country is
1,370,940,000. Their population was growing at such a significant rate that following the year 1979, the country put
in place the "One–Child Family" policy. The general purpose of this policy is to limit the size of the Chinese family.
It should be noted that though its title states one child, in some cases families are allowed to have a second child.

Abstract
The paper aims to determine the attitude of scientists towards electronic information resources in the library of
Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh. The study further aims to investigate the level of satisfaction. The
findings reveal that access and use of e–information is an important component of research activities for scientists.
E–journals, websites and email are most preferred e–resources Also there is a constructive suggestion for
developing an automated library system and remote access facility to access resources and increased electronic
resources with improved library services.

Homelessness Interview Essay
I met Julie at the Homelessness in Berkeley panel that she moderated in September. I appreciated her discussion of
the import of imagery, stereotypes, and language in shaping our social structures and circumstances. For example,
she explained that she said "people experiencing homelessness" instead of "homeless people" to not label the person
as if to define them by their circumstances. I would add that the latter phrase, like others of its ilk, can serve to
insidiously "naturalize" those structures that harm folks and thus seemingly absolve those of us with privilege
within it of our duty to work to change them. My interview with Julie expanded on this theme.

My Community College
Growing up I was always told college was a must and it was very important for my career. Both of my parents have
multiple master's degrees and my mom has her doctorate. So college was always in the back of my mind. I was not
the most studious student growing up. After graduation I tried community college and it just was not for me. I got
married at 19 and had children right after that. I had 4 children within 5 years. I worked a full time at a decent job,
but school never really was brought up. I moved to Idaho in 2009 and started a job at the Emmett Library in 2011.
Schooling again was really never brought up, even though I knew a job in libraries did usually require some type of
schooling. I went for a 2nd job at the Middleton Library in 2015. The director there told me she would like to see all
of her employees who do not have a degree enrolled in some type of classes. I started CSI fall of 2015 and
graduated with an AA in Library Science in Spring of 2017. I decided if I wanted my bachelor's degree I better
continue now or else who knows if I would go back. I spoke again with the director at Middleton and asked her
opinion about a bachelor's degree that would be good for me since there are not many bachelors programs for
library. (I had quit Middleton and started at the Nampa Library) She had said one of her employees was doing the
MDS program at BSU and gave me some background information on it. It sounded like something I would be

Issues in Academic Library: Essential Skills of...
1.0 Introduction An academic library is a library where it is to be found in an academic institution. As stated by
Burke and Miller (1993), "the information world has expanded dramatically over the last decade due mainly to
developments in communication. Information technology developments have resulted in new methods of
communications whilst the latest telecommunications systems have altered the speed of communications. Both of
these major changes have affected the way in which information is handled, stored and exchanged across the
world." Therefore, an academic library acts as a source of information where the users within the institution have

One of the new AASL Shared Foundations: Engage (2017) is that librarians "implement organizational policies and

(Shared Foundations Engage sect. para. 4). Subsequently, librarians demonstrate their leadership capabilities
through implementing and disseminating information to their school on guidelines for students' use of digital tools

However, as a school librarian, I also need to create policies that do not restrict students' right to access information
from a variety of perspectives. Safeguarding and promoting students' right to access information on diverse and
controversial subjects is also another component of my future policy for students' use of the Internet. Accordingly, I
will need to verify that the blocking software that the school uses is not blocking information specifically due to its
controversial nature such as LGBTQ issues, or contentious political viewpoints. The American Library Association
asserts (2012), "Anything that restricts access to information based on viewpoint or content violates the First
Amendment" (p. 23). Consequently, a critical component of my future role as a school librarian will be verifying
that the filtering software and the acceptable use policy of my school are not infringing upon the students' right to
access information from a variety of viewpoints.
The digital divide has a pervasive and negative effect on students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
Subsequently, the policies and practices that I implement in the school library should help alleviate the deleterious
effects caused by students' lack of access to digital resources. Furthermore, by simply extending the hours that the
school library is open, I can provide students with greater access to assorted digital resources as well as Internet
access. Equitable

The political climate in an influential factor in deciding how far reaching libraries can be in the community it is in.
Budget cuts made by politicians affect how much librarians can provide with the funds that they are afforded. In
another article written by Paul Jaeger, "Wake up the Nation: Public Libraries, Policy Making, and Political
Discourse" calls for library and information science researchers to "engage problems of politics and policy making
that impact libraries" which will benefit libraries in advocating their needs in the political process (Jaeger 61).
Jaeger notes that there is an "interrelationship" between policy, politics, and public libraries (Jaeger 61). For
example, a cycle occurs where libraries struggle to provide services

This study reveals that the categories of article distributions are remarkable in this research journal. The majority of
the articles were contributed by single authors; and most authors were librarians, faculty members or researchers
affiliated with academic or research institutions. Out of 66 issues published during 2000–2010, only fifteen special
issues were brought out from eminent editors and guest editor of LIS professionals. It is registered that Stephen M.

Why I Am A University Library
Until recently, I had no idea that there was a such thing as a Young Adult Librarian. I had assumed that teaching
would be the only job that would allow me to talk about books and share my love of books with young adults; but
then, one day I happened to stumble upon a blog ran by someone who was sharing her experience as a Young Adult
Librarian and I knew instantly that I had found what I wanted to do with my life. At this point, I started looking
around for ways to be involved with my university library, just so I could have a taste of what it was like to work in
a library setting. Since it is a university library, I knew that my opportunity to deal with anything young adult would
be pretty much non–existent, so I decided to just use the opportunity to learn whatever I possibly could about
librarianship. I spent the semester working with Collection Management and the Interlibrary Loan office and I
learned a little about the inner workings of those two areas, and a little about what it meant to be a librarian. I still
have my heart set on being a Young Adult Librarian in the end, and I know without a doubt that a career as a
librarian is right for me.
It is important to realize that being a young adult can be difficult, there are so many new experiences and
responsibilities that come with those years and it can be overwhelming for many. I want to become a Young Adult
Librarian so I can not only be in a position to, but also know how to best help young adults navigate

questions about the awareness and usage of e resources among user, to identify the level of satisfaction, to measure
the impact of electronic resources and to find out the problems which are faced by the user. The study found that
use of e resources was not only affected by low seep of network and reading direct from computer but also lack of
enough computers in library and paid access of information. The finding of the study indicated that a lot need to be
done to increase the use of e–resource and librarians should reorient themselves, think creatively and adopt the new

Exploratory Essay: Library Administration and Management
In library settings, the manager or administrator position is a prevalent position within the profession (Mackenzie &
Smith, 2009). This exploratory essay will examine the current education requirements, skills, competencies,
knowledge, experience, technical skills, and salaries of managers and administrators working in public libraries.
Educational Requirements
While the MLIS degree is widely accepted as the standard degree for library professionals, the requirement for
employment can vary. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook (2014) lists a master's
degree as the required entry–level education for librarians. However, according to the American Library Association

(Fraser–Arnott, 2013.) Jordan (2012) developed a research–based set of twenty statistically significant
competencies specifically for library directors by refining data collected from structured interviews with a diverse
set of library directors. The study identified these competencies as being: enthusiasm, demonstrating leadership,
delegation, accountability, planning, integrity, risk taking, credibility, resource management, creativity, customer
service, interpersonal skills, communication skills, flexibility, vision, political understanding, maturity, problem
solving, and advocacy skills. In 2008, the ALA developed a set of Core Competencies for LIS professionals, and
included five competencies regarding administration and management. These competencies include: budgeting,
human resources, assessment and evaluation of library services, developing community partnerships, and
transformational leadership. The word "transformational" was chosen in reference to the changing nature of
libraries; it was meant to indicate that libraries need leaders who are able to guide them through times of rapid

A Research Study On Literature Review
One of the stages in writing a research paper is the literature review. Since there is very little that has not been
studied in some form, good researchers find out all they can about their subjects before they commence their own
study. Not only is it imperative to acquire what is already know about the subject, but a literature review enables the
researcher to identify what is not known or well understood (Lanier & Briggs, 2014). By conducting a literature
review, one verifies what else needs to be done. A literature review is an important aspect of any research paper.
Additionally, reviews indicate what already exists, what has been learned and what has not been learned. By
conducting a review, researchers are able to consider what can be modified on past studies that will develop the
research question better. A review can provide ideas for changing some of the conditions or variables of previous
studies, which may result in different outcomes. Not only do researchers become more educated about a subject, but
can essentially aid in designing their own studies. Good researchers understand there are three primary categories to
utilize when conducting a literature review. The first category to review is general sources, which offer hints on the
locations of references, a general overview, and introduction to a topic (Salkind, 2012). The second category is
secondary sources which are "once removed" from actual research (Salkind, 2012). Secondary sources can include

Iraq 's Capital And Its Impact On The World
Introduction The foundation of a people's economy, politics, and security lies in its knowledge. There is no more
lasting way to transfer such knowledge than through a book. With a vision of securing the future of Muslims,
ancient Arabic–Islamic civilization worked hard to build public libraries where every son and daughter of Allah
could learn from the past and build the future. Perhaps, no city has played a more major role in this pursuit than
Baghdad. Baghdad, through the ages, has fueled the development of the arts and the sciences. The reputation of
Iraq's capital was synonymous to learning in the ancient world. Its academic influence spread to different countries,
cultures, and dialects. Baghdad is also a reflection of the challenges that Muslims faced in their goal to preserve
knowledge. Just like the famed city, other Islamic cities and states have lost many libraries due to conflicts and
wars. It is estimated that throughout history, the Muslim world lost nearly eight million books and great libraries,
like the Cortoba library in Iberia and Dar Al Elm library in Egypt. To better appreciate the Islamic civilization's
contribution to knowledge and to understand the issues that hinder us from developing our academic sources, this
essay will discuss the rise and fall of one of the world's greatest libraries, Bait Al Hikmah, more commonly known
as, The House of Wisdom.

School Librarians Case Study
One of the new AASL Shared Foundations: Engage (2017) is that librarians "implement organizational policies and
practices related to censorship, materials challenges, library records, and responsible use of information resources"
(Shared Foundations Engage sect. para. 4). Subsequently, librarians demonstrate their leadership capabilities
through implementing and disseminating information to their school on guidelines for students' use of digital tools
and library resources. Furthermore, librarians have a critical role in ensuring that their school is complying with the
Children's Internet Protection Act. Moreover, school librarians are also responsible for ensuring that all students

Furthermore, by simply extending the hours that the
school library is open, I can provide students with greater access to assorted digital resources as well as Internet
access. Equitable

Finger Print Essay
Finger print scanners for school libraries
Introduction
A finger print is unique for each individual. Using finger prints when students are borrowing books from the library
will ensure that a student does not use a fake name, and this will reduce the number of books the library losses. The
finger print scanner will be connected to the school's library system, and will automatically populate the fields once
the student's finger print is read. The finger print scanner will serve as a fundamental tool for the librarian and will
reduce their verification work. In case, a student's finger print has not been recorded, the librarian can easily capture
the student's records, and since the scanner is linked to the school's system registration is a very easy step.

A Library : My Home As A Library
In most towns or cities, you will find a library; whether it contains "old–school features", including a card
catalogue, a historian, and an old librarian shushing you for talking too loud, or it features modern aspects, like
usable iPads, eBooks, and lots of noise being made. The local library in my town became my home as a child.
I enjoyed reading many books throughout my childhood, and there is no better place to read a book than a library,
which had become my favourite hobby. The book's release an exquisite ambiance, and I found it very comfortable
and cozy. At home, I lived in poverty, in government housing, and without any father figure in my family, but at the
library, I could pretend none of that was actually happening, and I could lose myself in a book. I soon spent so
much time at the library as a child that I spent almost more time there than at my own house, which eventually led
me to meet the library director, Rachel Campbell. I found Rachel friendly, helpful, and little did I know, she would
one day become my best friend, despite the nineteen year age gap between us.
Once I grew to be around twelve years old, I would go into Rachel's office and discuss books with her, as nobody
else really ever read the same books that I did. Eventually, our discussions became not just about books, but about
our lives. I learned that Rachel came from the same situation as me, yet she had worked her way through the ranks
to get a degree in Library Science. Relief washed over

College Essay : An Ideal College
An Essay on An Ideal College
Everyone has or should have an ideal; something which he can look forward to, of which he may dream, and for
which he may strive. In our colleges we come across many defects or limitations. We often discuss these among
ourselves. And in course of these discussions, and as a result of them, we come to cherish a vague notion of what
would be an ideal college, at last, what we would regard as an ideal. Here of course I speak mostly for myself.
An ideal college, in my opinion, should consist of a building with well–lighted and spacious rooms, an extensive
playground, well–equipped libraries and laboratories, and learned teachers. These are essential, and so I will discuss
these first.
On the academic side an ideal college should have two kinds of rooms: lecture–rooms and tutorial rooms. Lecture–
rooms should be large enough to accommodate even two to three hundred students without crowding. In these days
of amplifiers, large classes should offer no real difficulty. Only three must be plenty of light and air to prevent
stuffiness. The acoustic arrangements must be such as to put no undue strain on a lecturer's voice. Tutorial rooms
should be spacious enough to accommodate small classes of ten or fifteen students. Too many lectures are apt to
become monotonous and boring. It would be deal if the ground covered by a lecture broadly is once again reviewed
in the tutorial classes in greater detail and with an eye to individual difficulties of students.

Preamble:
The Digital Curation Task Force (DCTF) is charged with developing a digital curation plan for a small university
archives organizationally located within the library structure. The focus of the plan is on the feasibility of building a
digital repository program for the archives to provide better access to their holdings.
Task Force Composition:
A successful digital curation effort requires collaboration between individuals with varied skillsets. Therefore, the
DCTF should be comprised of members of the archives unit, the library, and the larger university community. All
types of individuals listed below will be valuable additions to the DCTF:

The state of the current economic climate is common knowledge, resources for post–secondary educational
institutions are not plentiful and budgets are tight! Some may question our motives for choosing this moment to
embark on creating a digital repository to provide better access to the holdings of the archives, but I believe that we
can tailor our strategy to the current climate and develop a plan that is creative, feasible, and sustainable. The
resource that I would like you all to explore is a book titled Building a Digital Repository Program with Limited
Resources, which is available as an eBook via the library catalogue. This book was written recently from the
academic archives/library perspective by an expert in the field. Most importantly, the book focuses on how creating
a well–designed, efficient, sustainable, fiscally responsible repository program "with realistic, quantifiable goals can

(Clobridge, 2010). The author intended the book to function as a handbook for both those beginning and well
versed in digital repository work, so everyone in the DCTF should be able to come away from this resource more
knowledgeable about the work ahead (Clobridge, 2010). Part One of the resource focuses on big picture stuff like

Examination of Delphi and Quasi-Experimental Research Designs in Library Science

  • 1. Examination of Delphi and Quasi-experimental Research Designs Research plays a vital role in more deeply understanding library science. Thoughtful consideration of how evidence–based research is conducted is essential to its effective use. Research helps professionals identify and explore areas of concern or interest in addition to providing possible solutions for known problems. The Delphi and quasi–experimental studies provide examples of research performed in library science. The Delphi Study The Delphi study was developed by The RAND Corporation in the 1950s for the Air Force and was primarily used to forecast future events based on expert opinions (Wildemuth, 2009). Delphi studies provide an alternative to the traditional round–table type discussion (Cypher & Gant, 1971). The Delphi design ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These numbers were identical for round three. In total, 268 books and 34 journals were ranked with the top 100 representing items recommended for a core CME library. This study focused on gathering information on books from its expert panel and does exemplify several areas of a Delphi study. First, the researchers nominated a panel to recruit experts and make sure the instruments used were clear. To reduce bias, any book or journal affiliated with a panel member was eliminated. Demographics were noted by sub–groups, and each panel member was asked to rate his expertise. A minimum number of votes (10) was used as a cutoff for books indicated as most helpful to novice learners. In addition, each panel member was asked to waive anonymity with names published in the report. Forty–three members agreed. The Quasi–experimental Study A quasi–experimental study is a subcategory of experimental design where randomization of participants is not possible or not needed (Wildemuth, 2009). These studies occur in natural settings when limited control over the variables is possible. The independent variable (treatment) is manipulated to see if a causal relationship exists (Haas & Kraft, 1984). Naturally occurring groups such as classes are generally used. The goal is "to produce reliable causal knowledge" (Haas & Kraft, p. 229). Internal and external validity are important to this design. Internal validity is determined when ... • 3. Managing Library Education Essay Managing Library Education Managing for change is just as controversial in library schools as it is in corporations. The advances in technology over the past decades have forced library schools to educate technologically astute librarians. At the same time, many educators fear that the emphasis on technology may be eroding the concepts of service that have always been a part of the profession. The issue of incorporating technologies into a core curriculum without eviscerating the historical and ethical portion of the professional education has been debated widely. The question is how can the library schools bring technology into the program and still keep the traditional aspects which are important to the profession and to the accrediting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thomas Childers of Drexel (1998) had little sympathy for educators bemoaning the demise of the "L" word.He blamed the library schools for failing to see that by clinging to old ways they were creating a situation where students did not want to be associated with libraries, but rather wanted to be able to compete in what he called the "hard information systems" area.Cronin, Stiffler, and Day (1993) noted that many information professionals thought the MLS degree was out of sync with the new information environment. In these writers' view, the library schools were going to have to change not only their curriculum, but also their culture.A more entrepreneurial attitude to providing information needed to be cultivated, and more acceptance given to the ever–widening employment scope of information professionals. The impetus for the shunning of the "L" word may come from the fact that the public perception of librarians is not always as cutting–edge technology wizards, although librarians have been in the forefront of interconnectedness since before the World Wide Web gave the concept glamour. In fact, the technology world that library educators seem to fear offending by use of the "L" word, often use the "L" word, offering Digital Libraries and Resource Libraries on countless websites. The names by which library and information science schools are called is far less important than the content of the educational ... The Physics Teacher, 50(6), 379–380. doi:10.1119/1.4745701 Summary: According to Viele (2012), she states that when it comes to information literacy, there seems to be an abundance of definitions. The most concise and all–encompassing meaning is that information fluency is a set of skills necessitating individuals to be able to distinguish when and what actual information is needed. The author states that an individual should be capable to effectively locate, evaluate, and use the needed information in making informed decisions that are invaluable throughout life. In any situation whether it be preparing a presentation for class, a poster, or writing a report, these steps should be completed in an ethical manner. In the article, the author breaks down each of the information fluency skills in component parts. She also provides explanations of how to do each with online tutorials links, helpful websites, and examples for reference of good places to start when making sure that each skill is preformed effectively. ALA Code Of Ethics The SJSU iSchool's MLIS Program coursework requires that students demonstrate awareness of the ethics, values, and foundational principles of one of the information professions, and discuss the importance of intellectual freedom within that profession. The standard of professional conduct within library culture in America is set by the American Library Association's Code of Ethics. The ALA Code of Ethics "translates the values of intellectual freedom that define the profession of librarianship into broad principles that may be used by individual members of that profession as well as by others employed in a library as a framework for dealing with situations involving ethical conflicts" (ALA, 2008). Additionally, it looks into the factors that libraries need to consider when planning to acquire robots, including finances, staff and technical knowledge, space and charging facilities. Finally, it provides a quick look at how this technology will affect both the libraries and communities. I. Introduction The concept of "robots" has been with humans for a long time. From the "robot–knight" plan of Leonardo da Vinci to the automatons of Jacques de Vaucanson, to the robots created by several robotics companies, people have demonstrated a fascination. The word robot came from the Czech word, "robota" which means "forced labor". In 1921, writer Karel Capek used it in his play entitled Rossum's Universal Robots (R.U.R.). The credit for coming up with such term, however, goes to Josef Capek, his brother. Presently, robot means a machine that performs complex actions, similar to humans or other animals; also a machine that can perform repetitive tasks, guided by automatic controls. (Shulman & Buckley, 2014). Advances in technology have allowed the world to move forward in the creation of these machines for various purposes. Libraries, being both learning and cultural hubs of societies, have unique opportunities to introduce the idea of robots. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Finally, it will end with the opportunities and challenges that are facing China's libraries. Through this paper, we will gain a general understanding of China's growing library system as they take steps to secure its advancement in society. China's Libraries: The Influence of a Large Population China, a country with such a rich history, has long been identified by its significantly large population. When one thinks of China some of the first images that come to mind are the unique architecture, the traditional dress, splendid dynasties, internationally acclaimed philosophies, and high educational standards. It was noted by Wasserstrom (2013) that the most emphasized moralities from the Analects are education, ritual, and hierarchal relationships. These three important factors are such values that, to this day, they have a significant influence on Chinese culture. In addition to its rich culture and values, this country has the honor of holding the largest population in the world. The current population of this country is 1,370,940,000. Their population was growing at such a significant rate that following the year 1979, the country put in place the "One–Child Family" policy. The general purpose of this policy is to limit the size of the Chinese family. It should be noted that though its title states one child, in some cases families are allowed to have a second child. I appreciated her discussion of the import of imagery, stereotypes, and language in shaping our social structures and circumstances. For example, she explained that she said "people experiencing homelessness" instead of "homeless people" to not label the person as if to define them by their circumstances. I would add that the latter phrase, like others of its ilk, can serve to insidiously "naturalize" those structures that harm folks and thus seemingly absolve those of us with privilege within it of our duty to work to change them. My interview with Julie expanded on this theme. Schooling again was really never brought up, even though I knew a job in libraries did usually require some type of schooling. I went for a 2nd job at the Middleton Library in 2015. I started CSI fall of 2015 and graduated with an AA in Library Science in Spring of 2017. I decided if I wanted my bachelor's degree I better continue now or else who knows if I would go back. I spoke again with the director at Middleton and asked her opinion about a bachelor's degree that would be good for me since there are not many bachelors programs for library. • 46. Why I Am A University Library Until recently, I had no idea that there was a such thing as a Young Adult Librarian. I had assumed that teaching would be the only job that would allow me to talk about books and share my love of books with young adults; but then, one day I happened to stumble upon a blog ran by someone who was sharing her experience as a Young Adult Librarian and I knew instantly that I had found what I wanted to do with my life. At this point, I started looking around for ways to be involved with my university library, just so I could have a taste of what it was like to work in a library setting. Since it is a university library, I knew that my opportunity to deal with anything young adult would be pretty much non–existent, so I decided to just use the opportunity to learn whatever I possibly could about librarianship. I spent the semester working with Collection Management and the Interlibrary Loan office and I learned a little about the inner workings of those two areas, and a little about what it meant to be a librarian. I still have my heart set on being a Young Adult Librarian in the end, and I know without a doubt that a career as a librarian is right for me. It is important to realize that being a young adult can be difficult, there are so many new experiences and responsibilities that come with those years and it can be overwhelming for many. • 59. A Research Study On Literature Review One of the stages in writing a research paper is the literature review. Since there is very little that has not been studied in some form, good researchers find out all they can about their subjects before they commence their own study. Not only is it imperative to acquire what is already know about the subject, but a literature review enables the researcher to identify what is not known or well understood (Lanier & Briggs, 2014). By conducting a literature review, one verifies what else needs to be done. A literature review is an important aspect of any research paper. Additionally, reviews indicate what already exists, what has been learned and what has not been learned. By conducting a review, researchers are able to consider what can be modified on past studies that will develop the research question better. A review can provide ideas for changing some of the conditions or variables of previous studies, which may result in different outcomes. Not only do researchers become more educated about a subject, but can essentially aid in designing their own studies. Good researchers understand there are three primary categories to utilize when conducting a literature review. The first category to review is general sources, which offer hints on the locations of references, a general overview, and introduction to a topic (Salkind, 2012). The second category is secondary sources which are "once removed" from actual research (Salkind, 2012). Secondary sources can include ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Iraq 's Capital And Its Impact On The World Introduction The foundation of a people's economy, politics, and security lies in its knowledge. There is no more lasting way to transfer such knowledge than through a book. With a vision of securing the future of Muslims, ancient Arabic–Islamic civilization worked hard to build public libraries where every son and daughter of Allah could learn from the past and build the future. Perhaps, no city has played a more major role in this pursuit than Baghdad. Baghdad, through the ages, has fueled the development of the arts and the sciences. The reputation of Iraq's capital was synonymous to learning in the ancient world. Its academic influence spread to different countries, cultures, and dialects. Baghdad is also a reflection of the challenges that Muslims faced in their goal to preserve knowledge. Just like the famed city, other Islamic cities and states have lost many libraries due to conflicts and wars. It is estimated that throughout history, the Muslim world lost nearly eight million books and great libraries, like the Cortoba library in Iberia and Dar Al Elm library in Egypt. To better appreciate the Islamic civilization's contribution to knowledge and to understand the issues that hinder us from developing our academic sources, this essay will discuss the rise and fall of one of the world's greatest libraries, Bait Al Hikmah, more commonly known as, The House of Wisdom. • 65. School Librarians Case Study One of the new AASL Shared Foundations: Engage (2017) is that librarians "implement organizational policies and practices related to censorship, materials challenges, library records, and responsible use of information resources" (Shared Foundations Engage sect. para. 4). Subsequently, librarians demonstrate their leadership capabilities through implementing and disseminating information to their school on guidelines for students' use of digital tools and library resources. Furthermore, librarians have a critical role in ensuring that their school is complying with the Children's Internet Protection Act. Moreover, school librarians are also responsible for ensuring that all students have equitable access to diverse materials. Ultimately, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, as a school librarian, I also need to create policies that do not restrict students' right to access information from a variety of perspectives. Safeguarding and promoting students' right to access information on diverse and controversial subjects is also another component of my future policy for students' use of the Internet. Accordingly, I will need to verify that the blocking software that the school uses is not blocking information specifically due to its controversial nature such as LGBTQ issues, or contentious political viewpoints. The American Library Association asserts (2012), "Anything that restricts access to information based on viewpoint or content violates the First Amendment" (p. 23). Consequently, a critical component of my future role as a school librarian will be verifying that the filtering software and the acceptable use policy of my school are not infringing upon the students' right to access information from a variety of viewpoints. The digital divide has a pervasive and negative effect on students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Subsequently, the policies and practices that I implement in the school library should help alleviate the deleterious effects caused by students' lack of access to digital resources. Furthermore, by simply extending the hours that the school library is open, I can provide students with greater access to assorted digital resources as well as Internet access. Equitable ... Digital Knowledge Essay In "Literacy and the digital knowledge revolution" (2006), Claire Belisle refers to "digital knowledge", as a way that knowledge can be "processed and transformed", by the various technological tools, i.e. search engines, databases, sorters and linguistic analysts, that we have available (Belisle, 2006, p57). Belisle moves in to the revouloution Literacy– believes that literacy is the basis of knowledge acquisition and, with the stronger interaction between humans and technology and the way we acquire and interpret information and data from the latter, digital literacy needs to be incorporated into our current literacy structure. • 70. Finger Print Essay Finger print scanners for school libraries Introduction A finger print is unique for each individual. Using finger prints when students are borrowing books from the library will ensure that a student does not use a fake name, and this will reduce the number of books the library losses. The finger print scanner will be connected to the school's library system, and will automatically populate the fields once the student's finger print is read. The finger print scanner will serve as a fundamental tool for the librarian and will reduce their verification work. In case, a student's finger print has not been recorded, the librarian can easily capture the student's records, and since the scanner is linked to the school's system registration is a very easy step. The market There are many security companies that have implemented biometric scanners, but majority of these systems are used to allow access to a secure building. Biometric systems are widely been adopted in many places. The systems are used to verify a person when they are entering secure buildings or places. • 74. A Library : My Home As A Library In most towns or cities, you will find a library; whether it contains "old–school features", including a card catalogue, a historian, and an old librarian shushing you for talking too loud, or it features modern aspects, like usable iPads, eBooks, and lots of noise being made. The local library in my town became my home as a child. I enjoyed reading many books throughout my childhood, and there is no better place to read a book than a library, which had become my favourite hobby. The book's release an exquisite ambiance, and I found it very comfortable and cozy. At home, I lived in poverty, in government housing, and without any father figure in my family, but at the library, I could pretend none of that was actually happening, and I could lose myself in a book. I soon spent so much time at the library as a child that I spent almost more time there than at my own house, which eventually led me to meet the library director, Rachel Campbell. I found Rachel friendly, helpful, and little did I know, she would one day become my best friend, despite the nineteen year age gap between us. Once I grew to be around twelve years old, I would go into Rachel's office and discuss books with her, as nobody else really ever read the same books that I did. Eventually, our discussions became not just about books, but about our lives. I learned that Rachel came from the same situation as me, yet she had worked her way through the ranks to get a degree in Library Science. Relief washed over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. College Essay : An Ideal College An Essay on An Ideal College Everyone has or should have an ideal; something which he can look forward to, of which he may dream, and for which he may strive. In our colleges we come across many defects or limitations. We often discuss these among ourselves. And in course of these discussions, and as a result of them, we come to cherish a vague notion of what would be an ideal college, at last, what we would regard as an ideal. Here of course I speak mostly for myself. An ideal college, in my opinion, should consist of a building with well–lighted and spacious rooms, an extensive playground, well–equipped libraries and laboratories, and learned teachers. These are essential, and so I will discuss these first. On the academic side an ideal college should have two kinds of rooms: lecture–rooms and tutorial rooms. Lecture– rooms should be large enough to accommodate even two to three hundred students without crowding. In these days of amplifiers, large classes should offer no real difficulty. Only three must be plenty of light and air to prevent stuffiness. The acoustic arrangements must be such as to put no undue strain on a lecturer's voice. Tutorial rooms should be spacious enough to accommodate small classes of ten or fifteen students. Too many lectures are apt to become monotonous and boring. It would be deal if the ground covered by a lecture broadly is once again reviewed in the tutorial classes in greater detail and with an eye to individual difficulties of students. ... The state of the current economic climate is common knowledge, resources for post–secondary educational institutions are not plentiful and budgets are tight! Some may question our motives for choosing this moment to embark on creating a digital repository to provide better access to the holdings of the archives, but I believe that we can tailor our strategy to the current climate and develop a plan that is creative, feasible, and sustainable. The resource that I would like you all to explore is a book titled Building a Digital Repository Program with Limited Resources, which is available as an eBook via the library catalogue. This book was written recently from the academic archives/library perspective by an expert in the field. Most importantly, the book focuses on how creating a well–designed, efficient, sustainable, fiscally responsible repository program "with realistic, quantifiable goals can help showcase...knowledge centers in this era of shrinking budgets and an increasingly digital environment" (Clobridge, 2010). The author intended the book to function as a handbook for both those beginning and well versed in digital repository work, so everyone in the DCTF should be able to come away from this resource more knowledgeable about the work ahead (Clobridge, 2010).
