Slide 7: Title Search Use Title Search when you know an exact title -Title Search Tips: - Use exact word order. - Omit punctuation, accent marks, and initial articles (a, an, the). - Consider alternate forms of words (60 vs. sixty) and other synonyms. - If an item does not come up—CHECK the SPELLING, Orbis is very picky!!! Slide 9: Journal Title Search • Journal Title Search only retrieves scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, annuals and other regularly published materials. • Tips for Journal Title Search – Use for exact title of the journal or newspaper. - Retrieves materials using the exact word order. - Omit punctuation, accent marks, and initial articles (a, an, the). - Consider alternate forms of words (grey vs. gray). - If an item does not come up—CHECK SPELLING!!! • Journal title searching is especially useful when searching for titles like Science or Nature that would result in many hits. Slide 11: Author Search ● Use Author Search to find multiple works by one author. ● Authors can be editors, composers, translators, arrangers, illustrators, and other people associated with a title. ● Author Search Tips - No comma needed (Joyce James). - Retain hyphen in a hyphenated name (Levi- Strauss). - For names that use connectives (von, van, der) follow the conventions of the person’s country or language (Beethoven Ludwig van) Using the Orbis Online Catalog 11

Slide 14: Keyword Searching ● Searches Orbis records for that word ● Results will include all Orbis records that have the keyword in any part of the record (title, author, etc.) • Keyword Searching Tips – Use ? at the end of a search word for truncation: e.g., ecol? will search for ecology, ecological, etc. – Enclose exact search phrases in quotation marks: e.g., "middle ages". Truncation may be included within quoted phrases: e.g., "british theat?" will search for British theater and also British theatre. – Combine several terms using Boolean Operators: and, or, or not. Slide 17: Sorting Results • Sorting your search is recommended for extremely prolific authors and composers (e.g. Darwin, Shakespeare, Mozart), who have written many works or whose works exist in multiple editions and translations • Sorted results will give you a list of works by the author in alphabetical order by title OR date published Using the Orbis Online Catalog 17

Slide 19: Advanced Searching • Useful for searching by author and title. • Useful if you have partial information such as partial title words and the last name of the author. • You can combine your searches in various ways. Using the Orbis Online Catalog 19

Slide 24: Search History Search History allows you to see a list of the searches you have performed during your current session. You can re-execute or edit any previous searches within that same session. You can also combine previous Advanced Searches.
