Bwindi Gorilla Groups
Report into the possible habituation of another gorilla group in Bwindi for tourist viewing
Introduction and background
Bwindi Inpenetrable Forest is a national park situated in the south west of Uganda, close to the
borders of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. It covers an area of 321 km2 and is largely
made up of mountain and forest and is home to a number of flora and fauna. As well as having a
diverse array of wildlife, Bwindi is also one of only two places in the world where mountain gorillas
are found. This particular type of gorilla is one of the world's most endangered species, in the
mountain gorilla census of 2006, the world population stood at 720, about half of which live in
Bwindi. By inviting small groups of tourists to the area to view the gorillas it brings a vital boost to
the local and national economy. At present there are five habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi, four
tourist and one research, and this report aims to recommend whether or not another group for
tourism would be beneficial to the area. I have included evidence both supporting and opposing the
possibility of habituating another group of gorillas for tourism in the park and after considering the
evidence, I have concluded my recommendations in the following report. ... Show more content on

The evidence is justified and compelling on both sides, but a final decision was reached by weighing
up the most crucial needs of all stakeholders involved, as well as the gorillas themselves. The

Research Paper On Virunga Gorillas
The Virunga Gorillas is endangered but smart and amazing species. The Virunga National Park or
NKP is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo and "is home to nearly 200 gorillas" The
Virunga Gorilla is a massive animal. It has a short trunk and broad chest and shoulders. the Virunga
Gorillas have a large head and hairless, shiny black eyes and ears. There has been a argument
whether or not to keep the mountain gorillas in a nature reserve or to let them stay in their own
habitat. My personal opinion on the the Virunga Gorillas shelter is they should be put in nature
reserve because the virunga gorillas can be checked for disease that can help prevent their
extinction, virunga gorillas can be better taken care of, and they can live their

The Reasons Behind Harambe The Gorilla
With major media outlets busy with many stellar stories from this year, a major topic in the spotlight
was Harambe the Gorilla. Being in the spotlight many times, Harambe was a Silverback Western
Lowland Gorilla that lived in the Gorilla World exhibit of the Cincinnati Zoo. On May 28, 2016, a
3–year–old child climbed into the "Gorilla World" exhibit because he wanted to see the gorillas up
close. After falling into a moat, the child was picked up by the intrigued gorilla, Harambe. With fear
for the child's life, the Dangerous Animal Response Team claimed to have rational motive in order
to end the life of Harambe. Many criterion that support Harambe and the cause behind him are
evident in many people's daily lives. A couple of criterion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

All over the internet and stores worldwide, many things have been done in order to commemorate
the loss of the sacred and recognizable Silverback Western Lowland Gorilla. A major way that the
cause is remembering Harambe is by multiple petitions put up by users all over the internet
requesting for justice of the famed gorilla's uncalled for death. On the petition website "Change.org"
some petitions have over half a million signatures! Lastly, another way that Harambe is being
remembered is by products being sold in stores and online worldwide. To corroborate, on Amazon,
the world's largest online retailer, when using the search term "Harambe", 7,700 results come up!
Although there are many reasons supporting the nomination of Harambe, some people will argue

Western Lowland Gorilla Essay
The Western Lowland Gorillas are critically endangered animals that require our protection and
support. The Western Lowland Gorillas' greatest threat is poaching the gorillas for food and the
destruction of their natural habitat. Wildlife preserves are constructed, but the poaching continues
due to unstable governments and high price of the gorillas' meat. The governments in African
countries must be stabilized to prevent poaching and destruction of the Western Lowland Gorillas
habitat or these animals will become extinct. The Western Lowland Gorilla has very few natural
predators in the wild. Leopards are the Gorillas only real natural predators other than human beings.
This is largely because the Gorillas are just too large for many ... Show more content on

As logging companies cut into the dense forests they open access to areas of the forests normally not
accessible. This leads to increases in poaching what has been labeled as "Bush Meat" which is then
sold to villages (World of Wildlife). In an article published in the New York Times in 2012 Elizabeth
L Bennett PhD Vice President for Species Conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society wrote
that some protected areas with arm patrols such as the have seen increases in population. Having
park rangers armed on patrol obviously works to help stop the poaching but once again only
addresses a symptom of a larger systemic problem and further more the residents of these countries
require food to survive. Farming in Africa is inadequate and inefficient. The fertility of the soil is
becoming depleted and severely reducing the amount of crops from each harvest (Ayieko). This
problem is due to over farming the land and not allowing for crop rotation to replenish the nutrients
in the soil. This is a practice that is used by most farmers around the globe. Continuing on this trend
will risk the land becoming barren and unable to support plant life. This will not only affect farmers
but the entire ecosystem. Plant life will not flourish which will lead to more deforestation and
animals that feed on plant life, such as the Western Lowland Gorilla, will have less plants and fruits
to eat putting the Gorillas more at risk. Field rotation must be used, but due to increased demand for
food, farmers have little

Summary Of The Article 'Gorilla Doctors'
The article "Gorilla Doctors" is about gorillas that are endangered and are hurt. The doctors always
try their best to help the gorilla get better. They keep endangered gorillas safe and healthy.
In paragraph one, page nine, a male baby gorillas leg got caught in a poacher's snare. To remove the
gorillas leg from the poacher's snare safely, the vets would have to fire darts filled with anesthetics
that would make the baby and its mother fall asleep at the same time. The gorilla mother screamed
when the dart hit her, the silverback became furious at the team of vets. They calmed the silverback,
and was able to remove the snare from the gorilla. The "group called the Gorilla Doctors is an

Silverback Gorilla Research Paper
A terrifying situation occurred on May 28, 2016, a young boy, only three years old, accidently fell
into the Gorilla World Habitat in the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. As a result, the boy was
in an extremely dangerous situation with a male silverback gorilla named Harambe. The ginormous
gorilla dragged the helpless little boy around, disorienting the little boy. After a while, when the boy
was in critical condition, zoo officials had to shoot and kill the gorilla just to keep the little boy safe.
Luckily the boy survived this incident. Although the decision to shoot the gorilla was controversial,
one thing we can all agree on is that zoos are not safe and something needs to be done about that.
The current state of zoo safety is not where it should be, animal enclosures are not secure, dangerous
animals live in zoos, not much at all is being done to change safety standards in zoos.
The habitats the zoo animals live in are not secure enough. Not only can a person easily end up
inside of an animal's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens only raised the fence surrounding the Gorilla World
enclosure half a foot after the recent events. This does little to nothing to make this enclosure safer.
Someone could just as easily fall over this fence. The United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) and the Association of Zoo and Aquariums both inspected the Cincinnati Zoo. Both
organizations couldn't find anything wrong and the Association of Zoo and Aquariums said the
Cincinnati Zoo had surpassed the safety regulations. This shows how low the regulations are and
since they have not been changed this shows how no one intends to make zoos safer when there
clearly is a huge problem. Although the recent events in the Cincinnati Zoo had sparked concerned
about zoo safety it had done nothing to make zoo safety code

Introduction
Gorilla gorilla gorilla, is better known by its common name, western lowland gorilla (National
Geographic Society n.d.). The western lowland gorilla is a subspecies of the Genus Gorilla, within
the Suborder Haplorhini (Table 1). G. gorilla gorilla is found in Central to Western Africa in
lowlands, swamps, and tropical and subtropical forests (San Diego Zoo Global 2006; World Wildlife
Fund n.d.a.).

Western lowland gorillas are sexually dimorphic with the male gorillas being about 2 times as large
as female gorillas (San Diego Zoo Global 2006). Male gorillas are 400–500 pounds, on average, and
female gorillas are only 159–216 pounds (Cawthon Lang 2005). The males also are taller than the
females when standing bipedally, at around 1700 millimeters (~5 '5") on average, 200 millimeters
more than their female counterparts (Cawthon Lang 2005). Gorillas' arms are longer than their legs,
which helps with their knuckle–walking (Saint Louis Zoo n.d.). The habitual mode of locomotion
for gorillas is primarily knuckle–walking (Cawthon Lang 2005), but they can walk bipedally for a
short amount of time (Saint Louis Zoo n.d.). Western lowland gorillas differ from other gorilla
subspecies in that they have brownish (rather than black) fur (World Wildlife

Gorilla Scenario Monologue
Hello Mom and Dad, As you may have known, or so I believe I have told you about, I was planning
on visiting a gorilla sanctuary, in the Republic of Congo. It was an absolutely delightful visit, and I
hope to go back soon. The overall atmosphere was very warm and tropical. A trip that I will always
remember, because who takes care of wild gorillas on a daily basis? Defiantly not me, that's the
reason I was so pleased to know I had the chance to visit thanks to Madame Yvette.
The sanctuary is managed and run by Yvette Leroy and a young man named Mark. When I had been
introduced to Mark, He had been sitting in a wicker chair holding a small chimpanzee. I already felt
like he would be a respectable and generous man. I was so thrilled to know that Madame Yvette had
enough staff the day I visited, so they could let their three–year old gorilla named Magne out of his
cage. Madame Yvette seemed very caring and welcoming, as well as being sympathetic to her
gorillas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We grabbed a few chairs and Yvette fair–warned me to never stare into a gorillas eyes because they
believe it is a threat to them. I have to admit I was a bit intimidated but I was greeted by Magne with
him inspecting me very closely, his weight was far more than mine and he was very muscular so it is
not like I could just easily push him off of me. Magne soon accepted me and was satisfied that he
had improved my manners and taught me not to stare, looking much fulfilled with his kingdom. This
may have felt as an awkward experience but I truly loved it all in the

Gorillas are very peaceful and large animals. An average female gorilla is 5'10" 300 pounds. An
average male is 6 foot and about 400 pounds. A lot of people think gorillas are monkeys, but they
aren't. There are only about 300 gorillas left in the world. The gorilla lives in West Africa. Most of
them live in Rwanda, Africa. They also live in very hot climates. They live in jungles also. They
explore land around them. When it's time for bed, they break off branches from trees and cover them
with leaves to sleep on. Gorillas eat many different vegetables and plants. One of the plants they eat
are flowers. Another plant they eat is bamboo. The vegetable they eat is wild celery. Gorillas strong

Gorilla Observation
OBSERVATIONS
After doing quite a bit of research and findings, I've selected my first observation to be focused on a
film about a pack of gorillas that are found at Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay. I fully understand that
the behavioral habits of those that are within a small proximity are much different than those out in
the wild. An institution such as Busch Gardens would not be allowed to host a group of primates
together if they had personality conflicts and showed signs of aggression. While observing this
video, I took this information into consideration and applied it towards a close–knit family while
monitoring the playful and or aggression towards one another and labeling the leader out of the
tribe. The scientific name for gorillas is "Gorilla beringei beringi." This observational video featured
two silverback gorillas and a female gorilla that hid the entire time under the far back trees in the
enclosure. Gorillas have dark brown to black pelage and black skin. The two dominant adult males,
called silverbacks, have a prominent sagittal crest and striking silver coloration from their shoulders
to rump. For the sake of confusion, I've selected the names ... Show more content on

The look in Steve's eyes was playful. Tony got up and moved to a rock while pounding on his chest
as he continued to make eye contact with Steve. As Tony stood up, you could see his ability to stand
upright along with his size which was the height of an average female. Rather than using his legs to
maneuver, he used a tactic of knuckle–walking. Now that Tony seems to be alert, Steve sat down as
he started to lean on one arm and legs opened and relaxed – this behavior seems very similar to two
young males trying to antagonize one another in play. After roughly 10 minutes of rolling rocks
around and sitting across from one another, Steve pounded on his chest which seemed to be directed

Gorillas Vs Humans
Humans are the only extant members of Hominina clade (or human clade) a branch of the
taxonomical tribe Hominini having a place with the family of great apes. The nearest living relatives
of Homo sapiens are chimpanzees and gorillas. With the sequencing of both the human and
chimpanzee genome, current assessments of comparability amongst human and chimpanzee DNA
arrangements range somewhere around 95% and 99%. So if Humans and gorillas share right around
100% of the same DNA what makes people the main species on the earth?

Chimps and Gorillas can at times stand upright but they most often move on all fours. Bipedalism
has been proven to be the most efficient was of movement throughout the animal kingdom. Walking
allowed our ancestors to travel to new territories which led them to new more dangerous situations
which they had to face. Standing upright allowed our ancestors to see further, (which is why we no
longer rely mainly on smell). However standing like this was not originally intended the back was
not meant to support all of the weight, this is why we have back problems. I also lead to many
changes in our skeletal structure such as the thickening of our pelvis. Other changes in the human
skeleton included changes in the size of the bones of the foot, hip size and shape, knee size, leg
length, and the shape of vertebral segment.
Another difference between humans and other animals is the sexual habits of humans. Humans are
able to bond during sex through pleasure. Humans are able to have sex anytime and for any reason
not just for mating. These bonds formed allow humans to have family which would consist of a
father, mother, and children. Biologically a female human could have a child once a year from the
onset of menstruation to menopause that is about thirty children. While compared to a female
chimpanzee it takes about sixteen

Gorillas in the Mist Summary
Chapter 1: Dian Fossey plans a trip for seven weeks to Africa where she will study gorillas and meet
scientists Louis and Mary Leakey. Fossey goes with the Leakey's to look at a giraffe fossil at an
excavation site. She ends up falling into the ditch where the fossil was, breaking her ankle and
throwing up all over the fossil. After two weeks of recovering, Fossey goes to study gorillas with
Alan Root, a photographer, and his wife, Joan. After watching the gorillas, Fossey returns to her
hometown, Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Leakey then offers Fossey an opportunity to study gorillas in
Africa for a long period of time, and it will be completely free for Fossey. Fossey agrees and once
again begins her trip to Africa. She goes out with her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She says another man named Paulin Nkubili worked hard to stop the killing of gorillas for trophies.
According to Fossey, this man has been pretty successful in his work to stop poaching and trophy
hunting. Fossey concludes the chapter by stating that much of her information was learned by trial
and error. For example, she learned the gorillas respected her more if she studied them while on her
hands and knees rather than standing upright. Chapter 4: In chapter 4, Fossey begins to give names
to the groups and individuals she is studying. The chapter introduces most of the members of group
5, and describes newborns, fights, and some of the activities the gorillas partake in together. Each
member of the troop identifies one another by sound. The group has two silverback males,
Beethoven, the leader of the troop, and Bartok, a young silverback male, Brahms, adult females
Effie, Marchessa, Bravado, young boys Puck and Icarus, and many other gorillas. One of the
females, Bravado, has a baby named Curry. After the group is attacked one night, Curry is found
dead my Fossey the next morning. Expecting to see Bravado sad and depressed, Fossey found her
happy and joyful. This lead Fossey to think that it was an effort to forget the baby instead of
mourning it. From time to time, other groups attack the group and some of the gorillas are injured,
but these injuries never seem to be fatal. Effie, a female in the group, has a child, who loves to play

The gorillas live mainly in coastal West Africa in the Congo, Zaire, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and
Cameroon. Gorillas live in the rain forest. They usually live on the ground but build nest in trees to

troops. There are three different kinds of gorillas. The eastern lowland gorilla the western lowland
and the mountain gorilla. They are herbivores and eat only wild celery, roots, tree bark pulp, fruit,
stems of many plants and bamboo shoots. They spend nearly half their day eating.

and then there are the young and their mothers. Gorillas build makeshifts each night after a day of
looking for the plants and berries that they eat. The females usually sleep in trees on platforms made
of small branches and leaves, while the older male sleeps on drier grass at the base of the tree.
Gorillas make 15 recognizable sounds that have specific meanings. A hooting sound is used for an
alarm or to note an unusual event. Other calls are sharp grunts for giving discipline and low calls are
used for moving to a new nesting area. When gorillas beat their chest they are usually showing
intimidation or a display of power. The gorilla has no natural enemies but if an intruder appears, the
young and the female go to safer ground. If the intruder runs away it will be caught and killed, but if
it just stands there it will not be harmed. Fights between gorillas rarely ever happen and are resolved
through threatening gestures. The intelligence of the gorilla is still being explored. The gorilla shows
more persistence and memory in solving a problem and is more likely to perform a task out of
interest unlike its nearest relative, the chimpanzee which will only do it if he gets an award. Gorillas
can also identify geometric shapes more correctly. The gorilla, KoKo, was taught how to do sign
language and was taught almost over 1000

Gorillas: Diet and Eating Habits
Have you ever wondered about gorillas? A gorilla is a very strong built great ape with a large head
and short neck. Gorillas are the largest member of the primate family. Gorillas are quiet, shy,
peaceful, and live in central Africa and tropical rainforests. Several thousand years ago, gorillas split
from its closest relative the chimpanzees. There are four types of gorillas, being Eastern lowland,
Western lowland, mountain, and cross river gorillas. Ecology is how organism interact with one
another and the environment. It is the study of relationships between two living organisms.
The theory was that gorillas were just one species, but gradually changed as they spread and adapted
to different habitats. Gorillas are non–territorial and live in groups called "troops" or "bands" that
usually consist of one to four adult males, a few females, and their young. When the young matures,
they go off and join or form another troop. The oldest and strongest adult males are called
silverbacks, which are dominant in the troop. They were given this name because of the known
silver–colored hair on their backs. This silver–colored hair is developed through maturity of the
gorilla, you can usually begin to see this when the male is over 12 years of age. Silverbacks are
more aggressive than any other group member, since the troops' safety is their responsibility. Even
when resources are limited the male receives the dominant portion of the food. The Silverback
makes all the groups

Gorillas Classification
Gorillas are very fascinating animals. Many may think of gorillas as vicious monsters due to their
depictions in Hollywood Films but they are actually known to be gentle animals. Throughout this
essay we will be discussing the taxonomic classification, important physical and social features, and
present day geographic distribution. Looking at their evolution and comparing it to Homo Sapiens.
Last but not least why the Gorilla is one of my favorite animals. The taxonomic classification of
gorillas can also be known by its scientific classification. Scientists use this to compare the
characteristics to that of other animals. Its Kingdom is Animalia. Phylum is Chordata. Class is
Mammalia. Order is Primates. Family is Homindae. Genus is Gorilla. Species is split into two
categories gorilla & beringei. (Seaworld) Gorillas can be found in the forests of Africa. There are
actually two species of gorillas. The Western Gorilla, which includes the Western lowland gorilla
and the Cross River gorilla. The Eastern gorilla includes the mountain gorilla and the eastern
lowland or Grauer's gorilla. (World Wild Life Foundation) The Western lowland gorilla can be found
in County's such as Cameroon, Central ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reasons for these threats are due to humans. Humans take part in poaching which is the illegal
killing of animals. Poaching is still a problem today because even though it is illegal almost entirely
in the areas where gorillas are inhabited there is no strict enforcement of the laws put in place.
(World Wild Life Fund) According to International Gorilla Conservation Programme, Gorillas also
are threatened by habitat loss and disease. Habitat loss is due to the cut down of trees because of
population growth and the need for firewood. When tourists come to visit gorillas in their habitats
they carry diseases that gorillas may not be immune

The Gorilla Beringei Beringei And Mountain Gorilla
Introduction: The Gorilla beringei beringei or mountain gorilla, was first discovered on October
17th 1902, by a German officer named Captain Robert von Beringe (Berggorilla and Direkthilfe,
2002). Mountain gorillas play a large role in it's particular ecosystem through consumption the
gorillas control and maintain vegetation that is vital for a healthy environment not only for the
primate but also other species that live in the environment as well. Since the discovery of the
mountain gorilla much fascination has been drawn toward the species. However, the gentle
creature's population has had a sharp decline from Rwanda's belief in sumu, poaching, human
disease, and unregulated tourism. In efforts to revive the species population from extinction,
persistent activism through worldly foundations are helping protect the mountain gorilla species.
Von Beringe discovered the primate on the summits of the Virunga Volcanoes (Berggorilla and
Direkthilfe, 2000). The officer described the mountain gorilla as to be a large manlike ape, that was
tall in stature (about 1 1/2 meters tall), and weighed over 200 pounds (Schaller, 2010). The mountain
gorilla physical characteristics from other subspecies of primate differs by: lengthy hair, jaw, and
teeth, as well as shorter arms (http://wwf–congobasin.org/, 2010). The mountain gorilla is one of the
most wooly of primates, it has a long thick coat of fur that is necessary for the high cold altitudes.

The first recorded gorilla sighting (by western civilization) was in the 5th century B.C. by a Roman
Explorer. Now every day nearly hundreds of gorillas disappear because of an unnatural death. This
death is nothing mysterious, but is caused by poachers that trap these gorillas and kill them simply
for their hands and sometimes even their heads. Besides that even construction and agriculture take
the homes away from gorillas that were especially set aside. For these reasons' gorillas are
disappearing rapidly and must be taken care of. The western lowland gorilla is listed as an
endangered species. Others are Eastern lowland, and Mountain Gorilla.

Even though these precious animals are being killed people still like visiting and seeing gorillas! An
hour visit in Africa with gorillas costs about $120, with a maximum of six tourists visiting each
habituated a gorilla group a day. It can take several hours to reach the gorillas through the dense,
mountainous jungle. Safaris start at $3,000. Tourism generates a great deal of money for Rwanda,
Uganda and Zaire and helps protect other species as well as the gorilla.
The physical characteristics of gorillas are:
Height: Male's 5'6" upright, 4'6" normal stance. Females 5' upright, 3'6" – 4'
normal stance.
Weight: Males 300–500 lbs. Females 150–250 lbs. Babies from one to three years weigh between
20–30 lbs.
Arm Span: Up to 9'2'' (one male specimen).
Color: Black or brown–gray fur with black skin on chests, palms and faces. Red heads are common
in Cameroon gorillas especially. Males develop a silver back as they mature.
Stance: Gorillas are quadrupedal. They walk on all fours with the soles of their feet flat on the
ground and the knuckles of the hands curled and planted on the ground.

Pros And Cons Of Silverback Gorillas
On Saturday, May 28, 2016, Harambe a very rare silverback gorilla was shot and killed at Cincinnati
Zoo. A three year old boy climbed through the railings, at his own risk, and down a fifteen foot drop
into Harambe's secluded enclosure. The gorilla was then seen picking up the boy and dragging him
into the water. The boy suffered injuries but mainly from the fall. The question that has been taking
over the internet and news stations, should the gorilla have been shot and killed to get the young
child out of there to safety? Before I get started on the arguments some information needs to be
provided first. Silverback gorillas are protectors of their group. These specific gorillas are extremely
affectionate and take care of one another. Almost like humans and the "mama/papa bear" instincts
that our parents have. They are also very loving animals and will not make or cause harm if it is not
necessary. When silverbacks feel that them or their group is in danger they will try to get rid of the

But Harambe was born and raised at Cincinnati Zoo. This specific gorilla had no wild instincts
whatsoever. He doesn't know what it's like to be in the wild and experience a true intruder. He does
have natural gorilla instincts but because he was born and raised in the zoo he is technically very
calm for a silverback gorilla. I believe the zoo could have taken another route originally when the
boy fell in before Harambe had gotten near him. The boy is safe. Isn't that what we wanted? But in
return a gorilla a part of an endangered species is now dead. The zoo took many precautions so
things like these wouldn't happen. But it did. Should the parents have watched their son a little
closer? Should the zookeepers have dealt with this in a different manner? I think that what's done is
done but for future mishaps, situations like these need to be dealt with

Ishmael Gorilla Discussion Questions
1. Why do you think that the author decided to make the character Ishmael a gorilla? What purpose
could this serve in the lectures Ismael gives the narrator? (Analysis)
It could be to distance these ideas from that of human intelligence – a gorilla thought of this, not a
person. It could also be that while gorillas aren't humans, they and other non–human primates
certainly possess definite intelligence. Another idea is that maybe it was because so much of the
topics discussed were about the environment, it would be hypocritical for a human to present them.
It's like the "Takers vs Leavers" idea is coming directly from nature itself.
2. What is Ishmael's death symbolic of? (Analysis)

What do you think the author meant by 'With Gorilla Gone, Will There Be Hope for Man?' quote at
the end of the story? (Comprehension)
One possible explanation is that Ishmael, a gorilla, is the one who exposes all these horrible truths to
the narrator. When the gorilla is gone, the narrator may be able to avoid the truth once again. More
importantly, with Ishmael gone, no one is there (besides the narrator) to drag the Takers from their
peaceful world – thus, the 'hope' is their ignorance.
9. Compare Quinn's ideas of Takers and Leavers to the tannery and other economic expansion in
"Nectar in a Sieve". (Evaluation)
In "Ishmael", the Takers were quotes as beginning to force their culture on the Leavers. Similarly,
economic expansion occurred in "Nectar in a Sieve" and was said to be good (as Taker culture is
generally viewed by, well, Takers) even though it forced the Leavers to change their way of life in a
negative manner. The Takers in both books aren't necessarily bad, they're simply hubristic. They
believe that their way is proper, and want others to see it that was too – by force, if necessary.

Gorillas never sleep in the same place for more than one night. Even when they nap during the day
and then sleep in the same area at night they will create a new nest each time. Mothers usually share
their nests with nursing infants. Infants are helpless at birth, they learn to crawl at first and slowly
begin walking.
Gorillas are similar to humans in many different ways, such as sadness and laughter and also have

They show over 20 known sounds, and other gorillas recognize them. It takes a very long time to
build their trust as well. "Their DNA is 98.3% identical to a humans." (Lewis, et.al, 2008)
Reproduction for gorillas is also another feature just like humans, it is a slow procedure. It takes
about 8 and a half months for a single gorilla to be produced, even though the process is slow the
growing of a young gorilla is more rapid than a humans. They raise the infant gorilla for several
years before giving birth to another baby. As many as 40% do not survive after birth. Male infants
usually splits from the parents due to the lack of breeding chances. Female gorillas leave the group
when they are mature enough to start breeding. Females often do not get attached to one another, for
competition of grooming and staying

The Gorilla 's Life Cycle
What is black all over, loves the jungle, and is the coolest exhibit at most zoos? Gorillas are one of
the coolest animals at the zoo. The big muscular body of a gorilla makes it a unique creature; as well
as the many other unique physical qualities of a gorilla. These primates also live in troops make
them a force to be reckoned with. Because gorilla's habitat is in jungles they live quite a few places.
The gorilla's life cycle is very interesting as well. The gorilla's behavior is also a unique one and is
just as important. Big Strong, the Gorillas appearance, family, life cycle, habitat, and behavior

All of the gorilla males have no hair on chest as well as no hair on their face hand or feet; once a
male gets to a certain age he starts to grow silver hair on his back and is called a silverback. All of
the species have long arms, are very muscular, have dark skin, and are six inches shorter than the
average man. Silverbacks, the biggest male gorilla in a troop, are bigger, have a silverback, than a
black back, and has a more oval face but a black back has a circular face and is all black(Wexo).
Males as well as females also have a short nose with large nostrils, and heavy eyebrow ridges
(Gorilla).
Females are somewhat different from the males for instance they do not get as big. Females without
young and females with young are also quite different, the females without young have an arched
back, are skinny, and have an oval face that is moreslender while females with young have a flatter
back, are fatter, and have amore circular face. Gorilla babies are also, of course, different, they are
small, fat, and have very bushy hair but only weigh 4.5 pounds when they are born.and have eyes
that make them hard to resist.. All gorillas share something in common they all have five fingers and
five fingernails, they also have fingerprints that resemble a humans and their hands are bigger than
ours (Wexo). All gorillas also have a short nose with big nostrils, and they have heavy eyebrow
ridges and have no hair on their face, hands, or feet.

Gorilla My Love Setting
Gorilla, My love is a story about a little girl who thinks adults can treat children with disrespect and
no integrity. The setting transitions from one area to another, only to come back to the initial setting.
In this analysis I will talk about what goes on during these settings, and perception that author is
trying to paint in our minds. I ask myself, why the author began the story with a setting in
Granddaddy Vales vehicle? This describes the main character and the narrator of the story who is
Hazel, a female child. I learned that Hazel thrives being the navigator and prepares by "sleeping
with the lights on while blaming it on her brother, when she is the one actually scared of the dark".
(272) There is a sense of jealousy from the Hazel towards the woman in the photo being described
as a "skinny woman in a countrified dress". (272) Bored with the picture, Hazel quickly diverts us to
the theater in the background of the picture, and that takes us to the next setting. ... Show more

This was the only show that three underage children, Hazel, her baby brother, and Big Brood could
watch without adult supervision, and it was about gorillas which seemed amusing. The author's
intent in this setting was to show the behavior and immaturity of the children. She captures the
children's immaturity by saying, "turn the place out", "Baby Jason kicking at the seat in front", and
petty fighting.(272) Hazel realizes that this is not the movie that was advertized, and quickly
discloses her trust issues with adults by saying, "Grownups figure they can treat you just anyhow.
Which burns me up." (273) The author shows how intense the rioting increases by having the man in
the booth turn up the sound, drowning out the disruptive children until it gets out of hand. It is then
that Thunderbuns has to be called out to show influence with her flashlight to calm the rioting

Zoo Atlant The Gorillas
We could not have asked for a more perfect day to explore Zoo Atlanta. Upon our arrival the gorillas
were visible and active. There was plenty of things happening to observe. I expected to see very
diverse behavior among the groups of gorillas. I was excited to observe and learn as much as I could
about these fascinating animals.
We arrived just in time for the Gorilla feeding. The zookeeper was very knowledgeable about the
gorillas and talked to us the entire time he was feeding them. We were able to ask questions and he
answered all of them. Because of that I learned a little bit about the gorillas. The zookeeper knows
all the different things about the gorillas because they studied primatology which is the study of
apes, monkeys, and prosimians. The gorillas eat twice a day and that includes 10 pounds a day of
fruit and vegetables. They also eat a mix that includes vitamins and minerals. Since gorillas are
vegetarians they recieve all their nutrients from fruits and vegetables. All of the gorillas are
monitored regularly by getting their blood pressure checked and receiving EKG's. The female
gorillas take birth control, just like human women do. Since they are so human–like they can catch
human diseases so the zookeepers have to wear masks and gloves when coming in contact with
them. The zookeeper wore gloves when tossing their food to them. They can also catch the flu so
every year all the gorillas get a flu shot. Gorillas are hominoids which are a zoological

Hi! That is me in the picture above, and I am a gorilla. I belong to one of the four species of great
apes besides the chimpanzees, bonobos, and orangutans that are the closest relatives to human
beings like you. This is because we are similar by almost 98.3 percent when it comes to our genetic
code, which makes us the closest cousins among the other primates (WWF, 2016). My scientific
name is Gorilla gorilla, from the kingdom Animalia (IUCN, 2016). Human beings like you say that I
am a gentle giant, because we are "generally peaceful, shy, and amiable unless threatened (Csomos,
2014)," but it seems like people have taken advantage of us. We are now critically endangered
according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)
2016 red list of threatened species due to the destruction of our habitat, poaching, climate change,
and even diseases. But despite all of those, we are still grateful for some people and organizations

Compare And Contrast Gorillas And Baboons
Have you ever wondered what gorillas and baboons eat, where they live, and what they look like?
Even though you may think these primates are the same, they are really quite different. From the
habitats to the diets, gorillas and baboons are interesting creatures. Some of the differences of these
two animals traits are that gorillas weigh about 374 pounds and baboons only weigh about 82
pounds at the most. Gorillas are about 5.6 ft tall and baboons are only 2.3 ft tall. A few similarities

Gorillas Primate Family
Gorillas are apart of the primate family, they are terrestrial because they rather live on the ground
than in the trees. Gorillas have a relevance to humans because they are most closely related to us.
Gorillas can be categorized into three different subspecies. There's the mountain gorilla, the western
lowland gorilla, and the eastern lowland gorilla. The western lowland gorilla is usually the gorilla
you can visit in zoos. This is the smallest subspecies of gorilla who lives mainly in forests in the
Central African Republic, Gabon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Nigeria. The eastern lowland
gorilla is bigger and lives in Eastern Congo. Supposedly there are no mountain gorillas, which are
the third subspecies, held captive. It's estimated that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Depending on the environment and season is how they determine whatever eat. Lowland gorillas are
able to eat plenty of fruit because they're more on the ground, while gorillas living in the mountains
may eat more green plants. The gorilla's have strong teeth and massive chewing muscles this helps
them have better chewing habits. As I mentioned before, gorillas are most closely related to us. They
have senses very similar to humans, like hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch. As well as their
hands. They have five fingers, along with a thumb and their feet have five toes, including an big toe.
Gorillas can grasp things with both their hands and their feet similar to humans. Gorillas have
interesting physical characteristics. The male may be 6 feet tall and a weight of about 400 pounds.
The female can be about half the weight of the male. Although their bones are thicker and they are
stronger then us humans, their skull is somewhat similar to ours. The gorillas spine are not similar to
humans therefor it can't stand up straight the way we can. Their life span is about 35 to 40 years.
Gorillas usually stay on the ground. It's rare you see them in trees but when you do they're sleeping,
and where they do sleep in trees they build nests. Gorillas also have a different way of moving
called "knuckle–walking". Gorillas use the long arms they have inherited from there ancestors for
life on the ground. Their legs are shorter than their arms, and also a wide chest that goes along with

Essay on Gorillas in the Mist
A) Gorillas in the Mist is the non–fiction story of a Kentucky woman's experience living among the
wild gorillas of the Virungas Mountains. The conservation parks that she worked in are located in
areas that cover parts of the three African countries of Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire. Dian Fossey was
inspired to devote her life to these primates by the famous anthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey, who
funded her research. Through her stay in the wild terrain Dian soon thinks of as home, she educates
us on gorilla society and why it is so vital to protect them. Her research helps bring understanding to
the social structure of these endangered animals. Diane succeeds in persuading you to deeply
connect and care for the mountain gorillas on a whole ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A younger silverback was often born within the group, and would assume responsibilities of the
dominating one once he became too weak or died. Dian's studies proved to us that a gorilla family
was unlikely to survive without its dominant silverback to protect them. This allows people to view
gorilla society as a somewhat organized structure.
Dian helped us connect even more to the foreign primates by focusing on the different habits of
mother, baby, and adolescent gorillas. Giving each gorilla a name, Fossey helped us almost
humanize the animals through her vivid descriptions of their personality and behavior. She showed
us that gorilla mothers protect, care for, and discipline their infants. Gorilla babies develop much the
same ways humans do; acquiring skills as they age. Adolescents can be just as curious as they are
mischievous. Fossey's work helps replace the image of the gorilla as a ferocious animal into one that
is kind, gentle, and more human–like that we had never known.
Much of the book is spent talking about the many poacher patrols that Dian and her staff goes on in
order to prevent the illegal poaching that occurs within the park. Hours of her time are used up
cutting down traps and tracking down poachers. During one year of her stay, a group of poachers
kill a silverback gorilla in one of the groups Dian was studying. The group is eventually known to
have fallen apart, further enhancing the fact that

open and a fairly large man with a golden badge stepped in to the room bringing a metal foldable
chair with him. He opened the chair and sat directly across from me. "What's your name?" He asked

wooden safety rail blocking pedestrians from falling into the crevice. Mommy didn't say that I can't

ground gave away underneath me. Falling down into the crevice I hit my head as I land. Everything

Fascicularis) and apes (Hominoidea), which was found in Africa and Arabia about 34–24 millions
years ago. Mountain gorillas are Animalia, which phylum is Chordata and class of Mammalia. The
mountain gorilla is a subspecies of eastern gorilla, which live in two regions in Africa. There are
three countries where mountain gorillas live. They are Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of
Congo. According to National geographic, there are about 700 mountain gorillas remaining in the
earth and half of them live in a Virunga mountains in central Africa. In average, they live about 35
years; the standing height of a mountain gorilla is between 4–6 feet. They're weight usually between
300–485 pounds and they are bit larger than other type of gorillas. Mountain gorilla usually live in a
group and head of their group is called 'silverback' that is an adult male who grow a patch of silver
hair on their back and hips. However, when dominant silverback die, the whole group face hard time

Lowland gorillas live in the forests of central and western Africa in Equatorial Guinea, Angola,
Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A group of gorillas can have a territory of up to 16 square miles.
Gorillas are generally herbivores. They usually eat vegetation such as wild celery, shoots, roots,
fruit, tree bark and tree pulp, but they have been known to eat small animals and insects. A male can
eat up to 40 lbs. of vegetation each day.
Gorillas exact diet depends on where they live. According to Sea World, about 67 percent of a

New calculations to establish when the gorilla, chimpanzee and human lineages diverged are now
possible. By combining data on DNA–sequence differences between species with estimates of
DNA–mutation rates operative millions of years ago, Scally and colleagues calculate the human–
chimpanzee and (human+chimpanzee)–gorilla branch points to be 3.7 million and 5.95 million years
ago, respectively. These dates conflict with some fossil evidence, but more complex calculations
that allow for mutation rates that change with time––a reasonable possibility owing to changes in
the average length of generations and other parameters––may resolve this problem.
An overarching question is how these three divergent lineages each acquired ... Show more content

The authors compared Kamilah's genome with sequence data from two other western lowland
gorillas and an eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringeigraueri), and found substantial genetic
differentiation within the genus, consistent with previous data (9). The genus is currently classified
into four subspecies, two for each of the two species, but the variation identified by Scally et al.
suggests further analysis of genetic diversity in gorillas is warranted.
Gorillas have inspired awe and scientific interest throughout history. The sequencing of the gorilla
genome adds valuable information to our understanding of these remarkable animals and our
evolutionary relationship to them––revealing a closer connection between our genome and that of
the gorilla than was previously appreciated. Sadly, the future of gorillas is uncertain, with all
populations under severe human–induced pressure, and the mountain gorillas especially close to
extinction. Their fate is inextricably linked to our choices, and these extraordinary primates deserve
our utmost efforts at conservation. To quote from American author Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael,
"with man gone, will there be hope for gorilla?" or, even more soberingly, "with gorilla gone, will
there be hope for man?".

shoulders down to the hips, promoting the term "Silverback" and a pronounced sagittal crest (point
on top of the head.) The increased size of the gorilla and the extreme muscle mass is adaptive to
help defend against predators and to gain access to deep roots and breaking large branches for food.
As such outside of Humanity, Gorillas are suspected to only be vulnerable to predation by leopards,
and the evidence of that is spotty at best with the only proof being gorilla flesh in leopard feces
which could be as much a sign of leopard scavenging as it is of predation. There is no documented
proof of actual leopard on gorilla conflict. If it did happen it would likely be due to a solitary gorilla
being cut off from the troop. Gorillas spend much of their day resting and eating. The diet they
subsist on varries greatly from subspecies to subspecies, relying heavily on what is available in their
given territory. The mountain gorilla 's chosen diet consists of

Bwindi Gorilla Groups

  • 1. Bwindi Gorilla Groups Report into the possible habituation of another gorilla group in Bwindi for tourist viewing Introduction and background Bwindi Inpenetrable Forest is a national park situated in the south west of Uganda, close to the borders of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. It covers an area of 321 km2 and is largely made up of mountain and forest and is home to a number of flora and fauna. As well as having a diverse array of wildlife, Bwindi is also one of only two places in the world where mountain gorillas are found. This particular type of gorilla is one of the world's most endangered species, in the mountain gorilla census of 2006, the world population stood at 720, about half of which live in Bwindi. By inviting small groups of tourists to the area to view the gorillas it brings a vital boost to the local and national economy. At present there are five habituated gorilla groups in Bwindi, four tourist and one research, and this report aims to recommend whether or not another group for tourism would be beneficial to the area. I have included evidence both supporting and opposing the possibility of habituating another group of gorillas for tourism in the park and after considering the evidence, I have concluded my recommendations in the following report. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The evidence is justified and compelling on both sides, but a final decision was reached by weighing up the most crucial needs of all stakeholders involved, as well as the gorillas themselves. • 3. Research Paper On Virunga Gorillas The Virunga Gorillas is endangered but smart and amazing species. The Virunga National Park or NKP is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo and "is home to nearly 200 gorillas" The Virunga Gorilla is a massive animal. It has a short trunk and broad chest and shoulders. the Virunga Gorillas have a large head and hairless, shiny black eyes and ears. There has been a argument whether or not to keep the mountain gorillas in a nature reserve or to let them stay in their own habitat. My personal opinion on the the Virunga Gorillas shelter is they should be put in nature reserve because the virunga gorillas can be checked for disease that can help prevent their extinction, virunga gorillas can be better taken care of, and they can live their ... • 5. The Reasons Behind Harambe The Gorilla With major media outlets busy with many stellar stories from this year, a major topic in the spotlight was Harambe the Gorilla. Being in the spotlight many times, Harambe was a Silverback Western Lowland Gorilla that lived in the Gorilla World exhibit of the Cincinnati Zoo. On May 28, 2016, a 3–year–old child climbed into the "Gorilla World" exhibit because he wanted to see the gorillas up close. After falling into a moat, the child was picked up by the intrigued gorilla, Harambe. With fear for the child's life, the Dangerous Animal Response Team claimed to have rational motive in order to end the life of Harambe. Many criterion that support Harambe and the cause behind him are evident in many people's daily lives. A couple of criterion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All over the internet and stores worldwide, many things have been done in order to commemorate the loss of the sacred and recognizable Silverback Western Lowland Gorilla. A major way that the cause is remembering Harambe is by multiple petitions put up by users all over the internet requesting for justice of the famed gorilla's uncalled for death. On the petition website "Change.org" some petitions have over half a million signatures! Lastly, another way that Harambe is being remembered is by products being sold in stores and online worldwide. To corroborate, on Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, when using the search term "Harambe", 7,700 results come up! Although there are many reasons supporting the nomination of Harambe, some people will argue against against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Western Lowland Gorilla Essay The Western Lowland Gorillas are critically endangered animals that require our protection and support. The Western Lowland Gorillas' greatest threat is poaching the gorillas for food and the destruction of their natural habitat. Wildlife preserves are constructed, but the poaching continues due to unstable governments and high price of the gorillas' meat. The governments in African countries must be stabilized to prevent poaching and destruction of the Western Lowland Gorillas habitat or these animals will become extinct. The Western Lowland Gorilla has very few natural predators in the wild. Leopards are the Gorillas only real natural predators other than human beings. This is largely because the Gorillas are just too large for many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As logging companies cut into the dense forests they open access to areas of the forests normally not accessible. This leads to increases in poaching what has been labeled as "Bush Meat" which is then sold to villages (World of Wildlife). In an article published in the New York Times in 2012 Elizabeth L Bennett PhD Vice President for Species Conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society wrote that some protected areas with arm patrols such as the have seen increases in population. Having park rangers armed on patrol obviously works to help stop the poaching but once again only addresses a symptom of a larger systemic problem and further more the residents of these countries require food to survive. Farming in Africa is inadequate and inefficient. The fertility of the soil is becoming depleted and severely reducing the amount of crops from each harvest (Ayieko). This problem is due to over farming the land and not allowing for crop rotation to replenish the nutrients in the soil. This is a practice that is used by most farmers around the globe. Continuing on this trend will risk the land becoming barren and unable to support plant life. This will not only affect farmers but the entire ecosystem. Plant life will not flourish which will lead to more deforestation and animals that feed on plant life, such as the Western Lowland Gorilla, will have less plants and fruits to eat putting the Gorillas more at risk. Field rotation must be used, but due to increased demand for food, farmers have little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They keep endangered gorillas safe and healthy. In paragraph one, page nine, a male baby gorillas leg got caught in a poacher's snare. To remove the gorillas leg from the poacher's snare safely, the vets would have to fire darts filled with anesthetics that would make the baby and its mother fall asleep at the same time. The gorilla mother screamed when the dart hit her, the silverback became furious at the team of vets. They calmed the silverback, and was able to remove the snare from the gorilla. • 11. Silverback Gorilla Research Paper A terrifying situation occurred on May 28, 2016, a young boy, only three years old, accidently fell into the Gorilla World Habitat in the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. As a result, the boy was in an extremely dangerous situation with a male silverback gorilla named Harambe. The ginormous gorilla dragged the helpless little boy around, disorienting the little boy. After a while, when the boy was in critical condition, zoo officials had to shoot and kill the gorilla just to keep the little boy safe. Luckily the boy survived this incident. Although the decision to shoot the gorilla was controversial, one thing we can all agree on is that zoos are not safe and something needs to be done about that. The current state of zoo safety is not where it should be, animal enclosures are not secure, dangerous animals live in zoos, not much at all is being done to change safety standards in zoos. The habitats the zoo animals live in are not secure enough. Not only can a person easily end up inside of an animal's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens only raised the fence surrounding the Gorilla World enclosure half a foot after the recent events. This does little to nothing to make this enclosure safer. Someone could just as easily fall over this fence. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Association of Zoo and Aquariums both inspected the Cincinnati Zoo. Both organizations couldn't find anything wrong and the Association of Zoo and Aquariums said the Cincinnati Zoo had surpassed the safety regulations. This shows how low the regulations are and since they have not been changed this shows how no one intends to make zoos safer when there clearly is a huge problem. Although the recent events in the Cincinnati Zoo had sparked concerned about zoo safety it had done nothing to make zoo safety code ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Gorilla Essay Introduction Gorilla gorilla gorilla, is better known by its common name, western lowland gorilla (National Geographic Society n.d.). The western lowland gorilla is a subspecies of the Genus Gorilla, within the Suborder Haplorhini (Table 1). G. gorilla gorilla is found in Central to Western Africa in lowlands, swamps, and tropical and subtropical forests (San Diego Zoo Global 2006; World Wildlife Fund n.d.a.). Table 1. G. gorilla gorilla Taxonomy Suborder Haplorhini Infraorder Simiiformes Superfamily Hominoidea Family Hominidae Genus Gorilla Species G. gorilla Subspecies G. gorilla gorilla Source: Primate Info Net (Cawthon Lang 2005) Western lowland gorillas are sexually dimorphic with the male gorillas being about 2 times as large as female gorillas (San Diego Zoo Global 2006). Male gorillas are 400–500 pounds, on average, and female gorillas are only 159–216 pounds (Cawthon Lang 2005). The males also are taller than the females when standing bipedally, at around 1700 millimeters (~5 '5") on average, 200 millimeters more than their female counterparts (Cawthon Lang 2005). Gorillas' arms are longer than their legs, which helps with their knuckle–walking (Saint Louis Zoo n.d.). The habitual mode of locomotion for gorillas is primarily knuckle–walking (Cawthon Lang 2005), but they can walk bipedally for a short amount of time (Saint Louis Zoo n.d.). • 15. Gorilla Scenario Monologue Hello Mom and Dad, As you may have known, or so I believe I have told you about, I was planning on visiting a gorilla sanctuary, in the Republic of Congo. It was an absolutely delightful visit, and I hope to go back soon. The overall atmosphere was very warm and tropical. A trip that I will always remember, because who takes care of wild gorillas on a daily basis? Defiantly not me, that's the reason I was so pleased to know I had the chance to visit thanks to Madame Yvette. The sanctuary is managed and run by Yvette Leroy and a young man named Mark. When I had been introduced to Mark, He had been sitting in a wicker chair holding a small chimpanzee. I already felt like he would be a respectable and generous man. I was so thrilled to know that Madame Yvette had enough staff the day I visited, so they could let their three–year old gorilla named Magne out of his cage. Madame Yvette seemed very caring and welcoming, as well as being sympathetic to her gorillas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Magne soon accepted me and was satisfied that he had improved my manners and taught me not to stare, looking much fulfilled with his kingdom. A lot of people think gorillas are monkeys, but they aren't. There are only about 300 gorillas left in the world. The gorilla lives in West Africa. Most of them live in Rwanda, Africa. They also live in very hot climates. They live in jungles also. They explore land around them. When it's time for bed, they break off branches from trees and cover them with leaves to sleep on. Gorillas eat many different vegetables and plants. One of the plants they eat are flowers. Another plant they eat is bamboo. The vegetable they eat is wild celery. • 19. Gorilla Observation OBSERVATIONS After doing quite a bit of research and findings, I've selected my first observation to be focused on a film about a pack of gorillas that are found at Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay. I fully understand that the behavioral habits of those that are within a small proximity are much different than those out in the wild. An institution such as Busch Gardens would not be allowed to host a group of primates together if they had personality conflicts and showed signs of aggression. While observing this video, I took this information into consideration and applied it towards a close–knit family while monitoring the playful and or aggression towards one another and labeling the leader out of the tribe. The scientific name for gorillas is "Gorilla beringei beringi." This observational video featured two silverback gorillas and a female gorilla that hid the entire time under the far back trees in the enclosure. Gorillas have dark brown to black pelage and black skin. The two dominant adult males, called silverbacks, have a prominent sagittal crest and striking silver coloration from their shoulders to rump. For the sake of confusion, I've selected the names ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The look in Steve's eyes was playful. Rather than using his legs to maneuver, he used a tactic of knuckle–walking. Now that Tony seems to be alert, Steve sat down as he started to lean on one arm and legs opened and relaxed – this behavior seems very similar to two young males trying to antagonize one another in play. Chimps and Gorillas can at times stand upright but they most often move on all fours. Bipedalism has been proven to be the most efficient was of movement throughout the animal kingdom. Walking allowed our ancestors to travel to new territories which led them to new more dangerous situations which they had to face. Standing upright allowed our ancestors to see further, (which is why we no longer rely mainly on smell). However standing like this was not originally intended the back was not meant to support all of the weight, this is why we have back problems. I also lead to many changes in our skeletal structure such as the thickening of our pelvis. Other changes in the human skeleton included changes in the size of the bones of the foot, hip size and shape, knee size, leg length, and the shape of vertebral segment. Another difference between humans and other animals is the sexual habits of humans. Humans are able to bond during sex through pleasure. Humans are able to have sex anytime and for any reason not just for mating. These bonds formed allow humans to have family which would consist of a father, mother, and children. Biologically a female human could have a child once a year from the onset of menstruation to menopause that is about thirty children. While compared to a female chimpanzee it takes about sixteen ... • 23. Gorillas in the Mist Summary Chapter 1: Dian Fossey plans a trip for seven weeks to Africa where she will study gorillas and meet scientists Louis and Mary Leakey. Fossey goes with the Leakey's to look at a giraffe fossil at an excavation site. She ends up falling into the ditch where the fossil was, breaking her ankle and throwing up all over the fossil. After two weeks of recovering, Fossey goes to study gorillas with Alan Root, a photographer, and his wife, Joan. After watching the gorillas, Fossey returns to her hometown, Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Leakey then offers Fossey an opportunity to study gorillas in Africa for a long period of time, and it will be completely free for Fossey. Fossey agrees and once again begins her trip to Africa. According to Fossey, this man has been pretty successful in his work to stop poaching and trophy hunting. Fossey concludes the chapter by stating that much of her information was learned by trial and error. For example, she learned the gorillas respected her more if she studied them while on her hands and knees rather than standing upright. Chapter 4: In chapter 4, Fossey begins to give names to the groups and individuals she is studying. The chapter introduces most of the members of group 5, and describes newborns, fights, and some of the activities the gorillas partake in together. Each member of the troop identifies one another by sound. The group has two silverback males, Beethoven, the leader of the troop, and Bartok, a young silverback male, Brahms, adult females Effie, Marchessa, Bravado, young boys Puck and Icarus, and many other gorillas. One of the females, Bravado, has a baby named Curry. After the group is attacked one night, Curry is found dead my Fossey the next morning. Expecting to see Bravado sad and depressed, Fossey found her happy and joyful. This lead Fossey to think that it was an effort to forget the baby instead of mourning it. From time to time, other groups attack the group and some of the gorillas are injured, but these injuries never seem to be fatal. Effie, a female in the group, has a child, who loves to play with ... Gorilla Research Paper Common name– Gorilla Scientific name– Gorilla gorilla class– mammalia order– primata family– pongidae genus– gorilla The gorillas live mainly in coastal West Africa in the Congo, Zaire, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. Gorillas live in the rain forest. They usually live on the ground but build nest in trees to sleep in. Gorilla troops keep a 15–20 square mile range which often overlaps the range of other troops. There are three different kinds of gorillas. The eastern lowland gorilla the western lowland and the mountain gorilla. They are herbivores and eat only wild celery, roots, tree bark pulp, fruit, stems of many plants and bamboo shoots. They spend nearly half their day eating. The destruction of their habitat and ... The females usually sleep in trees on platforms made of small branches and leaves, while the older male sleeps on drier grass at the base of the tree. Gorillas make 15 recognizable sounds that have specific meanings. A hooting sound is used for an alarm or to note an unusual event. Other calls are sharp grunts for giving discipline and low calls are used for moving to a new nesting area. When gorillas beat their chest they are usually showing intimidation or a display of power. The gorilla has no natural enemies but if an intruder appears, the young and the female go to safer ground. If the intruder runs away it will be caught and killed, but if it just stands there it will not be harmed. Fights between gorillas rarely ever happen and are resolved through threatening gestures. The intelligence of the gorilla is still being explored. The gorilla shows more persistence and memory in solving a problem and is more likely to perform a task out of interest unlike its nearest relative, the chimpanzee which will only do it if he gets an award. Gorillas can also identify geometric shapes more correctly. The gorilla, KoKo, was taught how to do sign language and was taught almost over 1000 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Gorillas: Diet and Eating Habits Have you ever wondered about gorillas? A gorilla is a very strong built great ape with a large head and short neck. Gorillas are the largest member of the primate family. Gorillas are quiet, shy, peaceful, and live in central Africa and tropical rainforests. Several thousand years ago, gorillas split from its closest relative the chimpanzees. There are four types of gorillas, being Eastern lowland, Western lowland, mountain, and cross river gorillas. Ecology is how organism interact with one another and the environment. It is the study of relationships between two living organisms. The theory was that gorillas were just one species, but gradually changed as they spread and adapted to different habitats. Gorillas are non–territorial and live in groups called "troops" or "bands" that usually consist of one to four adult males, a few females, and their young. When the young matures, they go off and join or form another troop. The oldest and strongest adult males are called silverbacks, which are dominant in the troop. They were given this name because of the known silver–colored hair on their backs. This silver–colored hair is developed through maturity of the gorilla, you can usually begin to see this when the male is over 12 years of age. Silverbacks are more aggressive than any other group member, since the troops' safety is their responsibility. Even when resources are limited the male receives the dominant portion of the food. • 31. The Gorilla Beringei Beringei And Mountain Gorilla Introduction: The Gorilla beringei beringei or mountain gorilla, was first discovered on October 17th 1902, by a German officer named Captain Robert von Beringe (Berggorilla and Direkthilfe, 2002). Mountain gorillas play a large role in it's particular ecosystem through consumption the gorillas control and maintain vegetation that is vital for a healthy environment not only for the primate but also other species that live in the environment as well. Since the discovery of the mountain gorilla much fascination has been drawn toward the species. However, the gentle creature's population has had a sharp decline from Rwanda's belief in sumu, poaching, human disease, and unregulated tourism. In efforts to revive the species population from extinction, persistent activism through worldly foundations are helping protect the mountain gorilla species. Von Beringe discovered the primate on the summits of the Virunga Volcanoes (Berggorilla and Direkthilfe, 2000). The officer described the mountain gorilla as to be a large manlike ape, that was tall in stature (about 1 1/2 meters tall), and weighed over 200 pounds (Schaller, 2010). The mountain gorilla physical characteristics from other subspecies of primate differs by: lengthy hair, jaw, and teeth, as well as shorter arms (http://wwf–congobasin.org/, 2010). The mountain gorilla is one of the most wooly of primates, it has a long thick coat of fur that is necessary for the high cold altitudes. (Hilyard, 2001). Also, when male ... • 35. Pros And Cons Of Silverback Gorillas On Saturday, May 28, 2016, Harambe a very rare silverback gorilla was shot and killed at Cincinnati Zoo. A three year old boy climbed through the railings, at his own risk, and down a fifteen foot drop into Harambe's secluded enclosure. The gorilla was then seen picking up the boy and dragging him into the water. The boy suffered injuries but mainly from the fall. The question that has been taking over the internet and news stations, should the gorilla have been shot and killed to get the young child out of there to safety? Before I get started on the arguments some information needs to be provided first. Silverback gorillas are protectors of their group. These specific gorillas are extremely affectionate and take care of one another. Almost like humans and the "mama/papa bear" instincts that our parents have. They are also very loving animals and will not make or cause harm if it is not necessary. When silverbacks feel that them or their group is in danger they will try to get rid of the intruder by ... He doesn't know what it's like to be in the wild and experience a true intruder. I believe the zoo could have taken another route originally when the boy fell in before Harambe had gotten near him. The boy is safe. Isn't that what we wanted? But in return a gorilla a part of an endangered species is now dead. The zoo took many precautions so things like these wouldn't happen. But it did. Should the parents have watched their son a little closer? Should the zookeepers have dealt with this in a different manner? • 37. Ishmael Gorilla Discussion Questions 1. Why do you think that the author decided to make the character Ishmael a gorilla? What purpose could this serve in the lectures Ismael gives the narrator? (Analysis) It could be to distance these ideas from that of human intelligence – a gorilla thought of this, not a person. It could also be that while gorillas aren't humans, they and other non–human primates certainly possess definite intelligence. Another idea is that maybe it was because so much of the topics discussed were about the environment, it would be hypocritical for a human to present them. It's like the "Takers vs Leavers" idea is coming directly from nature itself. 2. What is Ishmael's death symbolic of? (Analysis) Ishmael dies of exposure, in a cage in the zoo. This can be symbolic of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What do you think the author meant by 'With Gorilla Gone, Will There Be Hope for Man?' quote at the end of the story? (Comprehension) One possible explanation is that Ishmael, a gorilla, is the one who exposes all these horrible truths to the narrator. When the gorilla is gone, the narrator may be able to avoid the truth once again. More importantly, with Ishmael gone, no one is there (besides the narrator) to drag the Takers from their peaceful world – thus, the 'hope' is their ignorance. 9. Compare Quinn's ideas of Takers and Leavers to the tannery and other economic expansion in "Nectar in a Sieve". (Evaluation) In "Ishmael", the Takers were quotes as beginning to force their culture on the Leavers. Similarly, economic expansion occurred in "Nectar in a Sieve" and was said to be good (as Taker culture is generally viewed by, well, Takers) even though it forced the Leavers to change their way of life in a negative manner. The Takers in both books aren't necessarily bad, they're simply hubristic. They believe that their way is proper, and want others to see it that was too – by force, if necessary. 10. The conservation parks that she worked in are located in areas that cover parts of the three African countries of Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire. Dian Fossey was inspired to devote her life to these primates by the famous anthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey, who funded her research. Through her stay in the wild terrain Dian soon thinks of as home, she educates us on gorilla society and why it is so vital to protect them. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A younger silverback was often born within the group, and would assume responsibilities of the dominating one once he became too weak or died. Dian's studies proved to us that a gorilla family was unlikely to survive without its dominant silverback to protect them. This allows people to view gorilla society as a somewhat organized structure. Dian helped us connect even more to the foreign primates by focusing on the different habits of mother, baby, and adolescent gorillas. Giving each gorilla a name, Fossey helped us almost humanize the animals through her vivid descriptions of their personality and behavior. She showed us that gorilla mothers protect, care for, and discipline their infants. Gorilla babies develop much the same ways humans do; acquiring skills as they age. Adolescents can be just as curious as they are mischievous. Fossey's work helps replace the image of the gorilla as a ferocious animal into one that is kind, gentle, and more human–like that we had never known. Much of the book is spent talking about the many poacher patrols that Dian and her staff goes on in order to prevent the illegal poaching that occurs within the park. Gorillas are my favorite animals. Before Mom could walk away, I snatched her hand and pulled her towards the gorilla signs pointing down a long and narrow path. It was almost as if I was in a dream. I finally got to see a gorilla in real life. Not in the cartoons on PBS. In real life. Even the smallest movement of the silver back was entertaining, like a cat chasing a red laser on the floor. The gorilla rolled around in the water with ease making joyful noises. "Did you see that, Mom? Did you see it?" "Yeah I saw it alright." She assured as she muffled her cellphone. "Like I was saying, Stacy," mom continued to talk on her cellphone uninterested in the silverback. I wonder what it would be like to swim with the gorillas? I thought as I approached the wooden safety rail blocking pedestrians from falling into the crevice. Mommy didn't say that I can't go. With one heave over the rail I made it across. Others noticed my presence and warned me to come back. "I just want to swim with the gorillas," I said reassuring them. With one more step, the ground gave away underneath me. The mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) are one of the most threatened species in the world that inherited from monkeys (Macaca Fascicularis) and apes (Hominoidea), which was found in Africa and Arabia about 34–24 millions years ago. Mountain gorillas are Animalia, which phylum is Chordata and class of Mammalia. The mountain gorilla is a subspecies of eastern gorilla, which live in two regions in Africa. There are three countries where mountain gorillas live. They are Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. According to National geographic, there are about 700 mountain gorillas remaining in the earth and half of them live in a Virunga mountains in central Africa. In average, they live about 35 years; the standing height of a mountain gorilla is between 4–6 feet. They're weight usually between 300–485 pounds and they are bit larger than other type of gorillas. Mountain gorilla usually live in a group and head of their group is called 'silverback' that is an adult male who grow a patch of silver hair on their back and hips. However, when dominant silverback die, the whole group face hard time to regroup themselves. Female gorilla usually becomes sexually mature before male gorilla. He then fell ten feet into shallow water in the gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo. There were three gorillas in the enclosure, and they were all signalled to go inside so they would be able to get the toddler. Two of the gorillas, which were both female listened and went inside, but the male gorilla went over to the child. The gorilla dragged the boy who fell into his enclosure through the water and then put him up on dry land. After this, the gorilla was shot and killed, the day after his seventeenth birthday. Some sources say the gorilla was meaning to hurt the boy, while some will say that it seemed like the gorilla was trying to protect the boy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 70. Mountain Gorilla Research Paper Did you know that gorillas have 98% of their DNA identical to humans? In this paper I'm going to be teaching you about gorillas and their habitat. Gorillas are large apes that are native to Africa. They are typically divided into two groups. The mountain gorilla lives in the mountainous regions of central Africa, while the lowland gorilla lives in the flat, dense forests of central and western Africa. Though the two types are very similar, they have a few differences. For example, mountain gorillas tend to have longer hair, whereas lowland gorillas have short, soft hair. Another difference is size. Lowland gorillas are 4 to 6 feet tall and weigh 150 to 400 lbs. Mountain gorillas are about the same height, though they tend to weigh a bit more. ... They usually eat vegetation such as wild celery, shoots, roots, fruit, tree bark and tree pulp, but they have been known to eat small animals and insects. A male can eat up to 40 lbs. of vegetation each day. Gorillas exact diet depends on where they live. According to Sea World, about 67 percent of a lowland gorilla's diet is fruit; 17 percent comes from leaves, seeds and stems; and 3 percent comes from termites and caterpillars. The mountain gorilla eats a diet that is about 86 percent leaves, shoots and stems; 7 percent roots; 3 percent flowers; 2 percent fruit; and 2 percent snails, ants and grubs. Gorillas live in groups. Groups of gorillas are called troops or bands. A band of gorillas can have as many as 50 members, though sometimes a band consists of as few as two members. • 77. Gorilla Lab Report [FIGURE 1 OMITTED] New calculations to establish when the gorilla, chimpanzee and human lineages diverged are now possible. By combining data on DNA–sequence differences between species with estimates of DNA–mutation rates operative millions of years ago, Scally and colleagues calculate the human– chimpanzee and (human+chimpanzee)–gorilla branch points to be 3.7 million and 5.95 million years ago, respectively. These dates conflict with some fossil evidence, but more complex calculations that allow for mutation rates that change with time––a reasonable possibility owing to changes in the average length of generations and other parameters––may resolve this problem. An overarching question is how these three divergent lineages each acquired ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The authors compared Kamilah's genome with sequence data from two other western lowland gorillas and an eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringeigraueri), and found substantial genetic differentiation within the genus, consistent with previous data (9). The genus is currently classified into four subspecies, two for each of the two species, but the variation identified by Scally et al. suggests further analysis of genetic diversity in gorillas is warranted. Gorillas have inspired awe and scientific interest throughout history. The sequencing of the gorilla genome adds valuable information to our understanding of these remarkable animals and our evolutionary relationship to them––revealing a closer connection between our genome and that of the gorilla than was previously appreciated. Sadly, the future of gorillas is uncertain, with all populations under severe human–induced pressure, and the mountain gorillas especially close to extinction. Their fate is inextricably linked to our choices, and these extraordinary primates deserve our utmost efforts at conservation. • 79. Gorilla, Gorilla And Gorilla In this paper I will be discussing Gorilla gorilla and Gorilla berengei, or as more commonly known, the Gorilla. The Gorilla is a genus of african ape of the family Hominidae that is found in Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Rwanda, and the Congo. The number of Gorillas vary greatly by subspecies from as high as roughly 17000 to as low as 250. Human influence on habitat, war, hunting, and various black market pet trades have had an impact on the population and territory of Gorillas. There are two species of Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla and Gorilla berengei) and four subspecies of Gorilla (G. b. Berengei, G. b. graueri, G. g. diehli, G. g. gorilla) The Gorilla is the largest of the great apes and is split into two species; Gorilla gorilla (western ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gorillas can climb however are to large to be tree dwellers, as their weight and mass would not be supported. Gorillas are Sexually dimorphic with the females averaging 4.92 ft and weighing in the ballpark of 159 to 216 pounds and the males standing on average 5.6 feet tall and weighing up to 500 lbs. Dominant males display a silvered patch of fur that extends down their back from the shoulders down to the hips, promoting the term "Silverback" and a pronounced sagittal crest (point on top of the head.) The increased size of the gorilla and the extreme muscle mass is adaptive to help defend against predators and to gain access to deep roots and breaking large branches for food. As such outside of Humanity, Gorillas are suspected to only be vulnerable to predation by leopards, and the evidence of that is spotty at best with the only proof being gorilla flesh in leopard feces which could be as much a sign of leopard scavenging as it is of predation. There is no documented proof of actual leopard on gorilla conflict. If it did happen it would likely be due to a solitary gorilla being cut off from the troop. Gorillas spend much of their day resting and eating. The diet they subsist on varries greatly from subspecies to subspecies, relying heavily on what is available in their given territory. The mountain gorilla 's chosen diet consists of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
