kept stacks of cds in the car. Majority of the time we listened to female r&b artist. Growing up I was
exposed to female singers like Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, and Erykah Badu ect. The song I always
enjoyed singing was "Tyrone" because it's funny. The live performance for this song is very

Being the oddball in my old school and new school, I always thought outside of boxes. Within my

This was a year to remember to quote the infamous Drake " What a Time to be Alive". The year
started with me working the 2015 BET Honors my first time working that particular show. It was
actually the first show I wanted to work when first beginning this journey, so it was a full circle
moment to get that particular call and to meet Phylicia Rashad someone who I had looked up to for
so many years just made the night that much more special.
That led to working production on Black Girls Rock traveling to New Jersey solo, staying with my
brother all for the dream. My first extended show. This five days were heaven having a call time,
getting to know the venue staff, BET Producers and Coordinators. I'd done by now two BET Awards
but the length of time was never this long and I really wanted to make a great impression on the staff
there that I was hungry and willing to do what it takes to go to accomplish the task. Icing on the

a younger demographic are drawn to it. Hip–Hop culture is now commonly recognized by it's
fundamental elements; such as, rapping, dancing, lyrics, beat, urban and apparently relevance which
are viewed as an art. Hip–hop is constantly evolving and incorporating different and new aspects to
it and it's just going to continue to grow within the next decades. Hip–hop focuses on urban youth
therefore, many young people actually turn to hip–hop as an outlet to express themselves with
various emotions and sentiments and sometimes devote themselves as aspirating hip–hop artists and
pursue the hip–hop industry. Hip–Hop was was initially an underground urban movement and
created in the 1970's by an African man, Kool Herc influenced and introduced it which has now

Who is apart of this "Generation X" group? Typically, people who were born in the years of 1965–
1980. People who were born in those times had a hard life. They grew up during the Aids breakout,
the fall of the Berlin Wall, Watergate and the end of the Cold War. This lead to them being
Suspicious and cynical. People of this generation usually don't trust too many people. You are
considered being apart of the "Millennials" generation if you were born in the years of 1981–2000.
People of this generation are typically spoiled and brattish. We grew up during the War on
Terrorism, 9/11, school shootings, and the introduction to social media. We are more friendly and
inviting compared to the past generations. We are quicker to accept people into our groups/cliques.
For as core values, the "Gen Xer's" are more independent than our generation. Our generation is
more dependent on our parents for everything. For example, my mom had to work during high
school just to pay for college, because her parents weren't able to afford the cost of college. That
shows how she worked for what she wanted, knowing that she didn't have the support of her parents

The genre of music known as Rhythm and Blues (R&B) came to the forefront of the music world in
the mid–1950 's. This genre of music still incorporated the tempo and the soulful sound of the blues,
however, it placed more emphasis on the lyrical aspect of the songs and less on the instrumental
aspect. As time went on R&B began to shape until reaching its most perfect form in the 1990's. This
decade ushered in musical acts such as Boyz II Men, Aaliyah, Keith Sweat, Maxwell, and Erykah

specifically influenced the black community by promoting the ideologies that are already deeply

As we know Hip–Hop and R&B contain many similarities they also share many differences. I am an
individual who sees the beauty and greatness in all music, but happen to be passionate about two
genres, Hip–Hop and R&B when I listen two these genres I tend to notice the differences and the
same that they have. The two music genres, Hip–Hop and R&B Shares many similarities and
differences especially involving the lyric and the tone and/or melodies.
R&B was created by African Americans at the end of World War II (1941–45) and the early 1960's
from Soul music, Jazz, Gospel, Pop music and Blues as time went on R&B was born. In its earlier
days, R&B Music was all about racial issues, and artists gave a lot of importance to the style and
arrangement, which included different instruments and rhythms to produce different types of
sounds. The result was lively music that had catchy lyrics and was widely used in dance parties. The
music (even today) covers the topic of love, happiness, dancing, and relationships. In the early 60's
to present day there's been great R&B artist from (Etta James, Jill Scott, Maxwell, usher, Erykah

Also, people with corporate jobs that hold Chief Executive Operation positions, or a field in general

job may be someone's own personal success, do not let the wealth speak as to why you are
successful. Success is not always determined by one's wealth. As an example, it is already known
that celebrities make a vast amount of money. When we review their success, we look at their
accomplishments, and how hard they have worked to get to their ultimate goal, not how much

related to Black womanhood. Like the works of many black female neo soul artists, Badu's album
serves as a device for the self definition of a people that have long been deemed invisible. The
philosophical concept of process–based invisibility theorizes that in order to justify the
subordination of black women, the physical evidence of our social contributions are systematically
erased and concluded to be nonexistent. In opposition, artists such as Badu use their music as spaces

I remember the day my parents got married. I was pretty young then, but the most vivid thing I can
remember is the music they had danced to. The main songs I remember them dancing to was "Let's
Get Married", by Jagged Edge, and "I Wanna Know", by Joe, it was my very first introduction to the
magic that is R&B. Many things have changed in R&B since the nineteen–nineties. For one, the
concept of singing groups died and solo singers took over or they simply left their groups to start

This song was so powerful in exposing the truth of the great suffering of blacks before and during
the civil rights era that is still known and used today. Many other Black women have performed
songs similar to this one, which changed the history of American music in a very unique way.
Today's artists still sample legendary songs that shows the impact that African American women
have on the music industry. The variety of music composed and performed by black women were
derived from the African Diaspora which evolved into spirituals, blues, gospel, and rap. These
women's contributions have paved the way for future artists of different ethnicities and genres.

Due to enslavement coming into America, they were then faced with horrific trials and tribulations.
Referring back to the homeland of Africa, Africans have been composing and performing music for
different purposes such as marriages, births, and funerals. They even use music to tell stories and
communicate with one another. However, while transporting over to the new world, Africans were
forced into slavery and brought their musical traditions with them to communicate with one another

The Black Power Mixtape follows momentous events between 1965 and 1975. It is directed by two
Swedish directors, and their nationality is very important for the layout of the film. The film takes
place during the Civil Rights Movement, and included leaders such as Stokely Carmichael, Angela
Davis, Malcolm X, and Medgar Evers. This was also during the time of the Vietnam War, whom
Sweden saw a useless war. The heads of this country were the Nixon Administration, and Lyndon
Johnson's administration. Furthermore, The Black Power Mixtape included world–renowned artists
such as Erykah Badu and Talib Kweli. I had no clue they were so educated on these matters. Also,
the author of our classes' textbook, Robin Kelley, spoke. The compilation of information and video
footage was unbiased and fact–based. The Black Panther movement was more of the focal point of
the film. This was a pivotal time in American history; as seen through foreign eyes. Also, this is my
first encounter with a foreign perspective of the United States during the Civil Rights Movement.
Coming up in school, no one ever taught me any other perspective on this part of American history.
