Patients suffering from chronic heart failure (CHF) often suffer from a decreased aerobic exercise
capacity and exercise intolerance, which leads to a progressive deterioration in functional capacity
(Belardinelli et al. 1999). This review will focus on four controlled clinical studies which have
examined the effect of exercise training on VO2 max in patients with CHF.
Coats et al. (1992) compared a phase of normal activity to a training period in a group of patients to
assess if there was an improvement in VO2 max due to exercise compared to rest. A group of
seventeen men over 60 years of age with moderate to severe chronic heart failure (NYHA class II–
III) and a left ventricular ejection fraction of 19.6 ± 2.3% took part in a controlled crossover trial
consisting of an exercise phase and a resting phase. During the exercise phase the participants
exercised for 8 weeks on a training bicycle at 50RPM for 20 minutes a day at 60–80% of their
maximum heart rate for five days per week. The patients undertook exercise testing to calculate
VO2 max before and after each phase. An overall mean compliance to exercise was calculated to be
77.3% using a revolution counter installed on each bike. The exercise phase showed a significant
increase in VO2 max (13.2 ± 0.9 to 15.6 ± 1.0 ml/kg/min) when compared with controls in this

Capitalism has continued to affect the way our society works as it is vital to our society. Two
sociologists named Karl Marx and Max Weber have explained what they saw the historical
emergence of modern capitalism. Both Karl Marx and Max Weber saw the significance of evolution
of modern capitalism in the United States. Although both of the sociologists have differing views on
how they saw the emergence of modern capitalism, there are also crossover and similarities in what
they find as well as what they think should be done differently. Either way, both Karl Marx and Max
Weber make significant explanations of capitalism which we can see that is still relevant today.
First of all, capitalism is the production of commodity for purposes of sales. It is an economic

Abstract:
Mammals consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide as part of their metabolism process in order
to maintain body functions. This occurs at all times, both rest and during intense work, within
mammals. During times of greater work, skeletal muscles work harder than they do at rest. This in
turn increases their metabolic rate and results in a greater demand for oxygen. It has been proposed
that fitness training has a positive effect on both the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, which
effect the maximum oxygen consumption rate during intense exercise periods. I hypothesize that
individuals who aerobically exercise a minimum of at least 7 hours per week will have increased
fitness, which will maximize their overall metabolic rates and give them higher VO2 max and
VCO2 max values than individuals who do not have increased fitness. Ten males having different
fitness levels were put on stationary bikes at increasing levels until exhaustion and VO2–max and
VCO2–max was then measured from each individual. It was found that there was a slight upward
trend between fitness–VO2max and fitness–VCO2max, although this trend was not statistically
significant when represented by the T–test values through statistical analysis. Further experiments
should be done in the future to verify a statistically significant correlation.

known today as the "Iron Cage". The "Iron Cage" refers to a very simple, yet complex theory
developed by sociologist Max Weber. In his theory which addresses a sociological problem
regarding standards of living; Dr. Alana Bibeau further deliberated on how Weber argues, that an
individual's life is being transformed not only by the ideas of efficiency, but shaped by the
increasing means of rationality and calculability. Though it can be argued by some that the
increasing means of efficiency, rationality, and calculability have no impact on the identity and

humans and their behaviors. How can we understand the complexities of humanity when there are
infinite factors involved in the mind of each person? Sociology, the study of human society, aims to
accomplish this task. Many intellectuals throughout the years have been essential to the formation of
sociology, including Auguste Comte, Harriet Martineau, Karl Marx, and Émile Durkheim. However,
the work of Max Weber, one of the founders of sociology, aligns best with my personal beliefs.
Weber was born in Erfurt, Germany in 1864 and was raised during a time when Germany was
rapidly changing in response to the industrial revolution. He observed the rise of a new economic
system called capitalism, prompting his later theory analyzing its foundations. Weber served in the

At the young age of 14, I fell in love for the first time. Although not ideal, he was white, covered
