10. HEATHCARE IN BLOGS
One nurse made a big bloody mess while
accessing Jesse’s vein for a blood draw. We
were concerned that she was getting
covered in his blood without wearing any
gloves… bad. (I wonder what infectious
disease girl would think of that!) One
respiratory tech came to do Jesse’s
breathing treatments DURING the contrast
CT scan. Seriously? He’s a little busy right
now…. kristinology.com

11. After waiting all day without a drop to drink or bite to eat, as per presurgical
instructions, I finally found out that they wouldn’t be able to take me for
surgery today to insert my port after all. A full day of scheduled procedures
+ an emergency added to the schedule at the last minute meant that they
just woudn’t get to me today. So at 3:15 I was able to eat breakfast and
have my morning Diet Coke.
The nurses finally found me another room too – I woke at 6 a.m. to the
sound of banging on the walls and power drills shortly thereafter, as the
hospital pit crew deconstructed the room next to me. I don’t know what they
were doing exactly, but the door was covered with layers of plastic sheeting
and even the nurses weren’t to knock. I’m happy to be moved down the hall,
even if it did mean lying on the couch in the family waiting room most of the
day, until they were able to find me a bed in another room.

12. i'm sure every year i write about it - about the beautiful hideousness that is
oncology at the holidays. in the past, i'm sure i've used words like poignant. this
year i think i'll use sucks - infinitely less poetic, but oh so accurate.
when your well-meaning spouse and kids say 'tell me about your day', you'll think
with equal parts truth and cynicism you don't mean that. because here's the thing -
i really don't have the words...and if i find them - watch out - you seriously might
regret asking.
but they'll keep asking and the patients that occupy much of your time and your
mental space will become known to your family on some level:
'mom, how's your surfer doing?' - he's hanging in there
'how's the gardener?' - she's doing great
'how's the young mom?' - she's not doing so well OncRN

14. NOT ALL REVIEWS ARE CREATED EQUAL
Too bad I cannot give them a zero. My dad has been
a patient here numerous times. My dad was
diagnosed with cancer last Christmas plus I found
out that there were other things wrong too. I feel that
city of hope did not help my dad. My dad passed
away on Valentines day. I really miss my dad. I will not
recommend this hospital to anyone. Yelp

15. SOME REVIEWS NEED TO BE ADDRESSED
This is an update of my recent review. The nurses at City of Hope are fantastic; however
they are limited to what the doctor orders. Currently, we do not have a primary oncologist
because the oncologist does not want to be responsible for any of my family member's
care. The primary oncologist wouldn't even do hydration for him, even though his chief
complaint of the inability to drink water was written through this doctor[sic].
All I know is that there is not one main oncologist who will provide consistent care for us
at City of Hope. There is a pain specialist at COH that truly does everything she can to
help us, but even she is limited. There is only 2 pain specialists at COH, a hospital
reknowned for cancer care. Cancer causes a lot of pain, so how come they don't hire
more pain specialists?
There really is a management problem at this hospital. If we didn't get to admit him in, we
wouldn't have been able to see the pain specialist and radiologist when we needed to.
