World Hunger Is A Serious Problem
There are 805 million malnourished people in the world today. One in nine people don't get enough
food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger and malnutrition are, in fact, the number one
health risk in the world. It is greater than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined (Ackerman,
2002). World hunger is a serious problem battering our nation and surrounding nations. The USDA
and United Nations are confronted with this issue. Kids are crying out in pain, as there is never
enough food to feed them. Someone needed to stop this hunger and find a way to solve this problem.
Earl Butz, the secretary of agriculture, decided to step in. He developed a plan to increase the size of
farmers and the production of crops. Although the plan never thoroughly worked, it is the only way
we will ever be able to feed the world. With the advancements of GMOs, we are able to morally
provide food for the world. ' World hunger is a serious situation that has been nagging our country
since the introduction of GMOs. Discovered in 1973, the idea for man–made transgenic crops which
would produce higher yields, rocketed the economy and agricultural world. The central issue is that
there is not enough food to go around to feed everyone. How do we produce more food? The
solution is easy, we need people who are willing to designate days, hours, and nights working,
planting, and harvesting throughout the entire year. These are the superheroes of the agricultural
world, also know

Cyberbullying Is A Serious Problem
Cyberbullying Bullying has existed for generations. Bullying use to occur face– to –face; you knew
who the bullies were and where they lived. Because of available technology, a bully can be totally
anonymous on the internet. Technology advancements, internet and social networks have produced a
new method of bullying called cyberbullyimg. Cyberbullying incidents have become widespread in
the past few years. According to DoSomething.org," almost sixty percent of young people say that
they have been cyberbullied before. Sixty–eight percent of teens agree that cyber bullying is a
serious problem. Eighty–one percent of young people think bullying online is easier to get away
with than bullying in person" (11 Facts 2013). Cyberbullying is a serious problem with devastating
consequences and we should be doing everything possible to control it. Victims of cyberbullying can
be harassed by different methods and by various behaviors. Cyberbullying occurs when a young
person embarrasses, threatens, humiliates or torments another young person over the internet, cell
phone or through text messages. Cyberbullies want their victims to feel bad about themselves. It is
normally not a one– time occurrence but repeated many times (Cyber Bullying Statistics 2013).
Social media networks such as Facebook and MySpace have proven to be a popular device in
bullying on the internet. Bullies will use various techniques to disguise what they are doing from
outsiders. They will use codes, intentional

The Serious Problem of Domestic Violence
The writer of this essay discusses about family violence, a serious social problem, and its effects on
the public. Family violence also known as domestic violence "is when someone uses abusive
behaviour [physical, sexual, or emotional] to control and/or harm a member of [his or her] family, or
someone with whom they have an intimate relationship." (Department of Justice) The writer
explains why family violence/domestic violence is a social problem and whom the issue affects. The
writer describes, how the problem shallows the whole society and the families with family violence
occurring in the household. In this essay the writer discusses the cost of domestic violence and
affects of it on the average taxpayers. This essay highlights the ... Show more content on

Young children might not be the direct targets of the abuse, yet witnessing abuse in the household
can harm them permanently and can cause psychological and behavioural problems. Children
exposed to violence at home act different as compared to the children living in a healthy family.
Witnessing abuse or being victim to abuse "increases one's risk of delinquency, adult criminal
behavior and violent behaviors" (O'Keefe, 1996). Children are considered a nation's future and
family violence leaves negative remarks on children. The negative impacts and experiences disrupt
young children from contributing to the maximum in the society and fill in their role. Family is a
first institution of socialization. Children perform what they observe, and if young children observe
one parent abusing the other parent he or she will be raised with the idea that family violence is a
norm and will contribute to the cycle of family violence in the future, and the cycle will continue on
without being questioned. Children who witness and are victim of abuse at home are more likely to
have aggressive behaviour, which includes arguing with everyone, disobedience in school,
disrupting class with rude behaviour. (Moylan et al. 2009) Such behaviour affects other children in
school even though they are not part of the household where the abuse is occurring.
Family violence is not easily pointed out because anyone can be a target of

Juvenile Delinquency : A Serious Problem
Juvenile delinquency is a serious problem in the United States as a whole, and especially in the state
of Illinois. Illinois is known for having crime problems especially in the urban Chicagoland areas.
Implementing juvenile delinquency intervention programs may be the first step to combating this
crime problem. There is potential to reduce future crime if the youths of today can be reached and
helped with these programs. I have picked four programs which I believe will help combat these
delinquency issues and reduce the juvenile crime in Illinois.
Aggression Replacement Therapy
Aggression Replacement Therapy also known as ART, was created by Arnold Goldstein, Barry
Glick, and John Gibbs. This program was designed to focus on at–risk youths who exhibit
aggression, anti–social attitudes, and impulsive behaviors. The goal of ART® is to improve social
skill competence, anger control, and moral reasoning.
Modality. ART uses a three–pronged program to achieve success.
The program incorporates three specific interventions: skill–streaming, anger control training, and
training in moral reasoning. Skill–streaming uses modeling, roleplaying, performance feedback, and
transfer training to teach prosocial skills. In anger–control training, participating youths must bring
to each session one or more descriptions of recent anger–arousing experiences (hassles), and over
the duration of the program they are trained in how to respond to their hassles. Training in moral
reasoning is

Gang Violence : A Serious Problem
Gang violence is a serious problem in America today, and it is also prevalent in the other countries
in the world. "According to a national gang survey, the most recent estimate indicates that there
were about 760,000 gang members in 24,000 gangs in the United
States in 2004" this just supports the statement that it is a huge problem in the United States
(Cooper, 2009, p. 1). Unfortunately, the Youth of America and these other countries have been a
large demographic of these gangs for many years due to many contributing factors. One criminal
factor that initiates gang violence are the overwhelming presence of adolescents and young adults
involved with gangs, Celinda Franco states that not only youth participants but whole "youth gangs"
have been on the radar for policy makers since the early 1900's (Cooper, 2009, p. 2). Another factor
is the nature of the remorseless and often violent nature of these gang related offenses many gang
members act as if they have no conscience and no values, and the fact that a large percentage are
"easy to influence" youth doesn't help the case that most commit gang crimes on a whim. Finally,
the fact that most of these gang related offenses that the youth carries out are in poverty stricken
neighborhoods that have very poor socioeconomic status, this it is a bad situation that is difficult to
escape from because young adults and adolescents do not have the means to move outside this zone
and may never attain this goal (Cooper, 2009, p. 3).

Bullying Is A Serious Problem
Bullying has become a very serious problem in today's schools, with one in four kids being bullied
on a regular basis (School Bullying Statistics, 2015). More specifically kids between sixth and tenth
grade are more likely to have involvement in bullying (School Bullying Statistics, 2015). Bullying
can include physical, verbal or psychological attacks or intimidation intended to cause fear, or harm
to someone (Ttofi & Farrington, 2010). Verbal bullying accounts for about 77% of all bullying
(School Bullying Statistics, 2015). This can include spreading rumors, yelling, name calling, or
other derogatory language based on race, gender, and more (School Bullying Statistics, 2015).
Today with social medias popularity, cyber bullying has become increasingly popular, with 80% of
high school students having reported being witness to, or being involved in cyber bullying (School
Bullying Statistics, 2015). Due to the increase in technology and a multitude of apps, bullying can
be done on phones, computers, and other forms of technology (Issurdatt, 2010). Text messages,
emails, and posting pictures have become a major problem and easier for students to join in on the
bullying behaviors (Issurdatt, 2010). This can make it difficult for schools to get involved because of
the amount of bullying that continues outside of school.
These are only a few examples of why anti–bullying programs are needed at a school–wide level.
Students who are bullied continue to experience poor self–esteem,

Rape Is A Serious Problem
Only rapists know when they will strike their prey with sexual assault. The victims, both men and
women, never see themselves in such a situation. But, what if both the victim and rapist are equally
to blame in that situation? What if women could be able to and should do everything they can to
prevent being raped? Is it possible that victims are not doing everything they can to prevent rape or
defend themselves when they are being violated? The argument of to whom the fault actually
belongs to has been a long occurring ordeal that perhaps may never be resolved. Rape is a serious
problem, which is why it is one of the most highly debated topics in today's society and media.
Many actors and actresses have spoken out against rape, some are even victims. There has also been
a growing amount of concern towards women expressed by many anonymous Twitter accounts.
Those accounts have helped make teenagers and other social network users more aware of rape
culture.
According to the Marshall University Women's Center, "rape culture is an environment in which
rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the
media and popular culture" ("Women's Center" marshall.edu page 1). Women believe that rape
culture is emphasized through arrogant language, women being objectified by men, the overuse of
television sexual violence, and teaching the victims not to be raped instead of teaching the rapist not
to rape.

Homelessness : A Serious Social Problem
Homelessness is a serious social problem in most American cities. Homeless people are those who
sleep in the open air or in provisional accommodation such as shelters or hotels, have no settlement
after expulsion or release from jail or hospital, or dwell provisionally with relatives or friends on
account of shortage of housing (Crane et al. 154–155). American economy has developed very fast
since 1980s, but homeless population has been increasing. They seem to be seen here and there in
public place and are usually associated with poverty, insecurity, drug addiction, crimination, illness
and other negative impacts on a society. In San Francisco, officially there are about 6,400 homeless
people (Roberts). "According to a poll from San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, homelessness
has overtaken affordability as the No. 1 concern among San Francisco residents" (Green). These
data indicate that this issue gets more and more attentions, and now it is a crisis that requires
immediate action. Though the local government is trying to move homeless people in houses from
streets by planning to build more transitional housing centers, the result upsets residents as there are
still many homeless people in this city. Besides, it is not a particular social problem in San
Francisco, but it exists in most American cities and in other countries all over the world. Therefore,
in hope of having some reference value for solving this problem in other cities or countries, this
essay identifies the

Cyberbullying : A Serious Problem
Cyberbullying In the past decade there has been a serious advance in technology and social media.
With that advance comes incredible opportunity and chances. But also with that advance comes the
serious evil and bad through cyberbullying. Thousands of people are cyberbullied every day,
indirectly and directly through Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, DM, Instagram, Ask.fm, etc.
Cyberbullying is a serious problem that effects people of all ages and causes incredible and
devastating problems in our society. With the incredible advance in technology and social media,
cyberbullying seems innocent and easy, but truly is extremely harmful and crushing to its victims
and can result in major mental and social issues, insecurity, depression, and even suicide.
With huge advances in technology and social media in the past decade, it is easy to comment or post
about someone. Though social media can be used for good, it can also bring about the issue of
cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the harassment or attacking of someone through social media or text
messaging, and is truly a real and evident issue throughout the world. Specifically based out of
schools, many victims are attacked via Twitter, Instagram, text, DM, Snapchat, Facebook, etc. by
people in their schools. Unlike regular bullying, cyberbullying is in a sense "hidden". It is done
behind closed doors and a screen. How easy is it to post something opposed to actually attacking
someone in person. The organization Enough is Enough,

Suicide : A Serious Health Problem
Suicide as any other life threatening illness is beyond our knowledge to understand what exactly
causes someone to kill themselves or even attempt too. Suicide is a serious health problem that takes
an enormous effect on family, friends, communities, as well as active military personnel and
veterans. Suicide is only a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Suicide risk factors are
features or conditions that can increase the chances that a person might think of taking their life. The
higher the risk factors the higher the risk that they will attempt suicide. For example some of the
health factors can be mental health conditions, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and

famous study of suicide where he classified different types of suicide based on the relationship from

Egoistic suicide: where one will become socially isolated.in a more detailed way a person who is
self–indulgedent and lacking Altrustic feelings. one who cuts off from society to be alone. This type
is common more towards the teenagers going through changes in their life, they will lock
themselves away for days trying to forget the world and avoid dealing with their problems. The
individual may feel that it 's a good escape it does not benefit them and may lead them into a deeper
depression. The second Type Altrustic Suicide, which resulted the individual from the taking of their
own life due to higher commandments in other words, is committing suicide for the feeling that it
will benefit others. For the third type Anomic suicide it is due to an individual dealing with a certain
breakdown of a social circumstance for an example bankruptcy. Where they feel like they

Boko Haram : A Serious Problem
The State of Nigeria has experienced a growing number of militants across the county. Over the past
three years, there has been an increasing threat posed by growing numbers of homegrown terrorists
that have managed to become a serious problem to the nation. In recent times, several terror attacks
have been mounted in major towns and cities spread across the country. The major religious terrorist
group, Boko Haram, has caused chaos in these areas causing substantial damage in the regions over
which they have gained control. Boko Haram militants have taken over a majority of the regions in
the north and declared their own version of Islamic law. In the delta region sitting directly off the
coast of Guinea, armed militant groups have waged war against the government due to economic
grievances. These events have come to shape the policies, ideologies, and future of the Nigeria as
the country rolls into the reality of the threat posted at their own doorstep. In past three years, Boko
Haram has carried out multiple attacks on several key areas in the Nigerian nation. The group began
targeting military and civilian installations, resulting in a significant loss of lives. They have
transformed into a religious terrorist group aimed at creating an Islamic state in Nigeria. The most
infamous and audacious operation in recent history is the kidnapping of young Chibok women from
a region in northeast Nigeria. The group's goal is to institute Sharia, and they resort to extreme

Child Abuse Is A Serious Problem
Children all around the world are going through a lot when it comes to child abuse, especially the
children in the United States. According to Child Abuse Statistics (2012) more than three million
reports of child abuse in the United States and these reports involves more than six million children.
The United Stated have a really high number of child abuse crime compared to other countries.
Every ten seconds a report of child abuse is made. The United Stated lose about four to seven
children every day because of child abuse and three out of four of these children of under four year
old. Child abuse is a serious problem in the United Stated and the numbers of report and death of

Child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury,
death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. Child abuse is describe as physical, sexual,
and emotional maltreatment or neglects of a child. Physical abuse is when a parent or guardian
cause physical injury/ harm to a child, which include kicking, shaking, burning, choking, biting,

Global Warming : A Serious Problem
For someone who does not celebrate Christmas, December was enjoyably warm last year. My
grandfather said he brought the warmth when he came back from Pakistan the month before; but for
me, the outdoor activities that weekend were a guilty pleasure. I had daymares about sea levels
rising and destroying the beautiful seacoast I have always called my home, my daughter growing up
in a world lacking in luxuries that I have always had, cursing me for not taking care of the earth that
she was to live on. I saved my grandpa the worry of what I know is a very serious problem: Global
Warming("What's Behind the Freakishly Warm Winter in the Eastern U.S.?").
Accordingly, there is a popular quote that frequents my Facebook newsfeed regularly: "There is no
Planet B." This would have meant nothing to me before, but taking Introduction to Environmental
Issues has enlightened me on the true complexity of the global warming crisis. We have an
exponentially growing human population with proportionally increasing demands that rob the health
of this planet. Every single action we take is linked to toxic waste choking the immense but limited
ocean. Pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is exposing every vulnerable life to the harmful
rays of the sun and drowning precious land where water shouldn't be. Global warming is no longer a
debate but a crisis to be quickly addressed, considering more than 97 percent of scientists agree that
climate change is a direct result of human

Prison Overcrowding Is A Serious Problem
Prison overcrowding is a result of the imprisonment of drug users and first time offenders of non–
violent crimes. The number of people being incarcerated greatly outweighs the number of prisons
across the country. Prison overcrowding is a serious problem because it can be dangerous to both
prisoners and correction officers. When prisoners are forced to live in crowded situations, the
possibility of violence is greater (Oliver 44). Issues such as assaults and rapes can occur when there
is not enough supervision over the prisoners. Not having proper security is a result of the prisons
being overcrowded. As more criminals become imprisoned, other prisoners are released due to the
lack of space. Because prison overcrowding has become such a serious issue across the country,
rehabilitation, halfway houses, probation, and house arrest are a few alternatives to prison for non–
violent offenders that can decrease the prison population.
Rehabilitation is the most effective alternative to prison due to the high percentage of incarcerated
non violent drug users. There are over two million prisoners in America's prison system, and about
one–fourth of them were convicted for drug offenses (Mitchell par.1). Not only do rehabilitation
facilities help with the problem of prison overcrowding, but also helps individuals with sobriety and
keeps them away from the drug–related activities. Sending drug addicts to prison does not cure them
of their diseases; it only makes their

Crime Is A Serious Problem
Policing and fighting crime are two terms often associated together. Crime is a serious problem in
cities and a lot of people are affected by it. Victims, criminals and their families are touched by the
outcomes of crime. Crime has increased over the years and is continuing to do so. The city of
Memphis has experienced a great increase of crime. Memphis Police have developed initiatives to
reduce crime, using federally funded programs. Unfortunately, crime problems such as theft,
assaults and homicide have become irrepressible over the last three years. "The rate of homicide in
Memphis is more typical of cities of its size. Assaults were accounted for 65 percent of deaths in the
area."(Kellermann, Rivara & Lee,1996,p.1438–1440). The Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) is very
successful for keeping track with the rates of these crimes.
The environment, the personality of the perpetrator and genetics has all been factors to blame for
criminal behavior. Although, these factors have potential to play a role in the reasoning behind
criminal acts, they will have to be supported. Criminological theories can hold the context to support
the evidence of these factors. Understanding crime and developing strategies are the keys in taking
the step to initiate a strategic plan. When addressing theft, assaults and homicide, the initiatives will
have to be considered and provisions will be made for a successful reduction in crime. Addressing
the problems of theft, assaults and homicide a

Bullying : A Serious Problem
The issue of bullying may seem insignificant and petty, but the truth is we are conditioned to ignore
it. The fear of being the next victim has caused many to lose sight of their moral compass when it
comes to defending one another or standing up for what is right. Instead we cower and turn our
attention to giving way to the biggest and loudest voice. Most people are prone to neglect the fact
someone is being bullied, because once again they fear becoming the next victim. School bullying is

including physical violence, psychological bullying, name–calling, taunting, teasing, and social

Bullying is one of the factors in deterring a student's ability to reach a higher level of education. It
does the opposite of empowering students; physical and verbal abuse can result in lack of
confidence, being unable to adjust to people or environments and overall failure to thrive. If there is
no healing after physical and/or verbal abuse from the wounds inflicted, then the chances of the
victim moving forward to success will not occur. Bullying is defined as "a process in which one
person repeatedly uses his superior strength or influence to mistreat attack or force another person to

kids are bullied each year with little to no intervention. Bullying can sometimes do permanent
psychological damage which never heals. If not dealt with in a timely manner the students can

Obesity : A Serious Problem Essay
Obesity is a serious problem in the United States, it is also a rising issue affecting people of all ages
and incomes. Overweight and obesity are words to describe having excess body fat. Obesity or
overweight status are determined by the measure of body mass index; BMI uses the calculation
based the ratio of someone's height and weight. Research has shown that BMI shows a good
estimate of "fatness" and correlates well with important health outcomes like heart disease, diabetes,
cancer, and overall mortality. Obesity is a very concerning and rapidly increasing health issue, my
public health analysis will primarily be focusing on childhood obesity and overweight. In the United
States, 20 percent of children aged 6 to 11 are obese. This rising trend is one that is likely to endure
and have long term devastating influences on the population unless there is action taken to reverse
this issue. "Obesity is not only a cosmetic concern. It does not just impact the way we look. It can
change the course of our lives, and not for the better." (American Heart Association, 2012) I came
across this statement and could not agree any less. Childhood obesity impacts many things from
medical complications such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease, to
mental and psychological issues such as poor self–esteem, depression, stress, and the list goes on.
However, there are good news to obesity. This trend can be prevented and managed. The most

Homelessness Is A Serious Social Problem
Homelessness in America has been a considered a serious social problem for at least thirty to forty
years, affecting thousands upon thousands of people in all regions of the country. The individuals
and families that make up the homeless population face struggles every day that many of us may
never even experience in our entire lives. There are many factors that either contribute to or directly
cause homelessness. Unfortunately, many people in our society believe that homelessness is a
personal problem and should be up to the individual to fix. However, homelessness is actually a
very serious social problem that we all need to be concerned about and work together to bring it to
an end. The American society is so accustomed to labeling each other just by looks, clothing, and
other material goods. Power, wealth, and prestige seem to be the only things that many people want
to live for, and those people do not attempt to put themselves in other peoples shoes, especially not
the shoes of a homeless person. This is a terrible habit that has been such a huge part of our society
for so long that a lot of people do not even see the problem with it. They may not even realize how
wrong and terrible it is to label someone just by their looks or their life situation. But since we have
done it for hundreds of years, we all continue to do it and see no problem with it. Many people in

schools should provide an opportunity for teaching children how to acquire a healthy eating and

daily, there is now believed to be at least 1.6 million homeless people in America alone according to
the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development 's 5th Annual Homeless Assessment

person to provide for themselves. Through loss of skills, they develop an inability to think about
employment because they are too busy worrying about housing. There is also an ever increasing
amount of homeless individuals becoming ill everyday thanks to the exposure of a variety of
diseases. Diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, and hepatitis C, which are at least 46 times greater in
the homeless population than the general population. (News–Medical, 2012) Homelessness also

Cyberbullying Is A Serious Problem
Cyberbullying
Teenagers have been bullying and pushing each other around since the beginning of times, But now
with technology texting, IMing, Facebook, Myspace, Youtube, bullies not longer have to confront
their victims face to face. They can stay in the shadows and torture their targets anonymously; this
new phenomenon is called Cyberbullying. What is Cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is defined as
aggressive; intentional act carried out by a group or individual using an electronic form of contact,
repeatedly over a period against a victim that can't easily defend him or herself (National Crime
Prevention, 2016). These incidents have increased over the past few years, over 81% of our teens
think that cyber bullying is easier than bullying a person when 68% believe that it is a serious
problem (Dosomething.org. 2016). Cyberbullying is a serious issue in the arose not only from
children but our future cultures, and we should act on it now to minimize it and control it.
Unfortunately it is getting very hard to prosecute the perpetrators of these actions due to the fact of
the 1st Amendment and the freedom of speech, the 1st Amendment protects the freedom of speech

Is Chicago A Serious Problem?
Chicago is facing a serious problem. Over this year 's Fourth of July Weekend, eighty four people
were shot resulting in fourteen deaths. After this violent weekend, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel nearly
called for total martial law, calling upon United States Military 's support to help protect Chicago 's
citizens and patrol Chicacgo 's streets. So far in 2015, over 2,300 people have been shot in the city
of Chicago, and it is only a matter of days until the death toll surpasses four hundred on the year.
There are a number of factors that contribute to this inflated level of violent crime. Some would
point to loose gun restrictions, others to gang fragmentation. I believe the most influential factor
leading to these high rates of crime in certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Keef is well aware of the trials and tribulations facing the youth who grow up on his gang riddled
streets. He is also aware of his claim to stardom, as well as his influence and power, with which
should come a greater sense of social responsibility. Imagine being a thirteen year old growing up
with a single mother in Compton or Chicago, two communities heavily inflicted with poverty and
gang violence. Too quote the website, Teen Ink says "American youth are a target of the marketers
of rap and hip–hop. In many low–income areas, some youth, particularly African–American males,
are growing up with limited opportunities. Some of them have no important male role model in their
lives, so they look up to a rap or hip–hop artist." Without a father figure, American youth is subject
to the dignitaries of rap and to those 'higher ups ' behind the scene who target and take advantage of
the disadvantaged kids; living in broken homes, without an identity, and desperate to be a part of
something. It is so easy to exploit troubled youth because a vast majority of the artists influencing
these young kids came from the same city, started from the same projects, and escaped from a
similar, hopeless situation. In his essay Realness and Hoodness, Ginger Jacobson states,
"Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the information they are exposed to because they are
likely to use it as a basis for decision making without the cognitive ability to consider other
decision–making pathways.

Will you it Stop? : Before it happens to you! For Hundreds of years bullying has been going on, how
long will it finally stop? In the United States Suicide is the third leading cause of death among
young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide
among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students
have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it. Bullying is a Very serious social
matter that needs to stop, Bullying related suicide would be related to any type of bullying like
Physical bullying, Emotional Bullying, and Cyber Bullying, Sexting ,and even Nude Photos. Some
parents even think that bullying is ok and is "just part of being a kid" Which is not true, it is a
serious problem that leads to negative victims including suicide. Most people do not realize that
bullying and suicide has a link to each other, some schools or religions have more serious bullying
and suicide related to bullying. The victims of bullying feel alone and trapped like 14 year old

Overpopulation Is A Serious Problem
There are many threats to global health in today's world but the one that seems to be the greatest
threat to the entire world is overpopulation. Overpopulation is a serious problem that is having an
extreme effect on the health of every citizen of every country. The problems caused by
overpopulation could even prove to be a fatal epidemic to the human population. Oftentimes
overpopulation is overlooked due to a lack of knowledge or simply because many government
officials have dismissed overpopulation and call it a myth. Overpopulation is an enormous and
serious global problem that needs to be taken seriously in order to analyze the issues and create
solutions to provide a better way of life and ensure that everyone is able to live a healthy life not
only today but in the future as well.
The definition of the word overpopulation means that the number of things that depend on resources
for survival is significantly larger than the amount of resources available to them (Busman,
"Overpopulation: The World's Problem"). In today's world people are experiencing the effects of
overpopulation run rampant because of a lack of population control and a lack of proper
contraceptives in countries like India (Busman, "Overpopulation: The World's Problem"). Year after
year the population multiplies faster and faster resulting in exponential growth. Currently the
world's population is growing by 80 million people a year ("World Population Clock Projection").
Presently, there are about 7

Childhood Obesity : A Serious Problem
INTRODUCTION (PROBLEM STATEMENT) Obesity does not exist among older people only. It
can be seen among children and young adults. Childhood obesity is in fact "a medical condition that
affects children and teenagers" (What is Childhood Obesity). Childhood obesity is a very serious
problem that every single person throughout the world should know about and also aware of.
However, some people might wonder and ask "what does overweight has to do with Childhood
obesity?" According to the Childhood obesity foundation, it says that "if a child or adult stores too
much fat, they can be classified as obese and a sign of childhood obesity is a weight well above the
average for a child's height and age" (What is Childhood Obesity). It might be ... Show more content

Medical Pediatrician (Santos). Also, as mentioned above, it is a serious problem that can lead a
child's life to a lot of health complications and health issues that may even result in death.
Furthermore, according to the Centers for Health and Health in School, one study stated that the
percent of children ages 6–11 that are overweight are considered to be two times greater between the
late 1970s and 2000 rising from 6.5% to 15.3% (Childhood Obesity What the Research Tells Us,
2007). In addition, same study also stated that the percent of overweight adolescents ages 12–19
tripled from 5.0% to 15.5% during the same time period (Childhood Obesity What the Research
Tells Us, 2007). FIGURE 1 Figure 1 shows the prevalence of overweight among U.S children and
adolescents ages 6–19 years. Even though the percentage of overweight children and adolescents
increased from the 1960s to 2000, the rate shows that it still remained similar for boys and girls
(Childhood Obesity What the Research Tells Us, 2007). As you can see in figure 1, it is also
showing that in 2000, 16% of all the boys ages 6–11 were considered overweight or obese while
14.5% of all the girls were considered overweight. Also, among adolescents 12–19, 15.5% of both
boys and girls were considered overweight or obese (Childhood Obesity What the Research Tells

Childhood Obesity : A Serious Problem
We are what we eat. Most of us have heard this many times, and just do not believe it; however, it is
shockingly true. The human body is made up of the nutrients it extracts from foods (Katz). The
importance of the statement "We are what we eat" often goes unrecognized, thus causing a major
problem: parents not providing healthy diets for their children to ensure their best quality of life.
Childhood obesity is a serious problem in America, and I believe it stems from parents. I have
witnessed this first hand with my niece. It really bothers me that my sister–in–law often feeds my
niece desserts and junk food instead of meats and vegetables. I have noticed that my niece is
overweight and developing slower than she should. My family thinks it is cute, but I think it is
starting her off in the wrong direction and posing problems for her future health. "For children and
adolescents aged 2–19 years, the prevalence of obesity has remained fairly stable at about 17% and
affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents for the past decade"("Childhood Obesity Facts").
The number one cause for obesity is consuming an unhealthy diet filled with extra calories the body
does not need. In a study of 6,212 children ranging in ages from four to nineteen, one–third ate fast
food every day. By consuming fast food that often, it is likely to add about six extra pounds per
child each year and increase the risk for obesity (Holguin). Although childhood obesity is
problematic, there are

Climate Change Is A Serious Problem
Humans will destroy the earth if no one acts. Climate change is a serious problem that has been
around for decades. The 21st century is special because of the technology and information available.
Yet, people continue to ignore the overwhelming destruction happening to nature. Through many
years, masses have begun to take responsibility and restore the planet. In time, the earth might be
what it once was.
Climate change began in the 1820s with Joseph Fourier and in the 1860s with John Tyndall. Fourier
put into motion the "greenhouse effect." An effect where trapped gasses in the lower atmosphere
absorb the sun's heat. Tyndall found that "greenhouse gasses" cover the earth like a sheet. This is
how the earth keeps cool and warm. Yet, too much greenhouse gasses can be futile. During this time,
humans did not know that they were the ones causing implications. 100 years later, Svante
Arrhenius proposed that "...doubling the CO2 content of the planet's atmosphere would raise its
temperature by 2.5 to 4.0 degrees Celsius" (Frank, para 7). Any slight change in temperature can
offset the ecosystem. People began to act to save their planet, but there are still many in denial.
A way to lower greenhouse gasses is to protect the forests. Humans have used and still use trees for
many purposes: warmth, shelter, and food. Wood, fruits, nuts, roots, shoots, and branches of a tree
are all useful. The soil from cleared forests are also nutrient rich. Deforestation is not a new
occurrence. The

arguments and opposing viewpoints about a growing epidemic in teens and adults, obesity.
Currently this topic is very controversial about who is to blame the kids, the parents, or the

Children are hit with advertisements for food, candy, and sugary drinks on the television, the
Internet, in magazines, and at school every day (Nestle 28). The fast food industries realize that
gaining children as customers at a young age most likely makes them a life–long customer (Nestle
28). Sadly soft drink companies unapologetically name 8 to 12 year olds as marketing targets
(Nestle 31). Clearly these companies are targeting younger kids so they buy their products in the
future so their businesses strive in the future years. The amount of money spent on marketing
directed to children and their parents rose from $6.9 billion in 1992 to $12.7 billion in 1997 which is
pretty crazy (Nestle 31). As the media gets more and more popular every year the more money
companies spend on advertising. Then, coincidentally, the obesity rates keep getting worse and
worse not in just America but across the world. Market researchers break down the elements of
advertising down to package design, typefaces, pictures and most of this content is likely to get boy
and girls of varying age to want to purchase products (Nestle 31). Simple marketing tricks like those
can catch a child's attention and get them wanting those meal toys or other things that catch their
attention. Another reason why advertisements lead to obesity is that nowadays kids and adults are
sitting in front of a television or computer for

Climate Change Is A Serious Problem
Climate Change is a Serious Problem to the Planet "Climate change is happening, humans are
causing it, and I think it is perhaps the most serious environmental issue facing us." This quote from
Bill Nye illustrates the serious nature of climate change. Climate change is the most serious issue
that is plaguing the world. Global temperatures have been increasing in recent years and it is clear
that our climate is changing. Climate change is the change of temperature and weather in our
environment over long periods of time. A majority of scientists suspect that humans are causing
climate change by emitting CO2 into the atmosphere which creates a greenhouse effect and warms
the planet. The effects of climate change are far–reaching, impacting ocean life and plant life across
the globe. It also directly impacts humans because global temperatures may cause sea levels to rise
and temperatures become too warm to live in. Climate change is real and is occurring because the
effects of climate change can be seen in our oceans, in global temperature increases, and because
humans are directly causing climate change. Climate change can be seen through the effects on our
oceans. The planet is warming and an increase in global temperatures causes ice to melt.
Unfortunately, this cycle is becoming problematic as it warms the planet's temperatures. According
to NASA, "Global sea level rose about 17 centimeters (6.7 inches) in the last century. The rate in the
last decade, however, is

Sex Trafficking Is A Serious Problem
A topic usually pushed into the dark, sex trafficking is a serious problem within our district that
often goes unnoticed and ignored. Lurking underneath the mask of common businesses or seemingly
normal neighbors, sex trafficking is prevalent not only throughout the world, but in our very own
communities. Just months ago in May, Galveston County residents were shocked to hear that four
Galveston men were charged with federal charges for their alleged involvement for conspiring to
recruit, entice, and harbor minors for sex trafficking. (KHOU, 2015). These men had allegedly
transported underage girls to various hotels throughout Galveston County, forcing them to have sex
with men and then keeping all of the profits. This situation is unfortunately a recurring theme
happening throughout the U.S., with our citizens oblivious to the horrors that are occurring just
down the street in modern suburbia. Victims of sex trafficking are often subject to horrendous
treatment from not only clients, but by their traffickers as well. The issue however is that sex
trafficking is often right in front of our eyes, yet we continue to punish victims rather that punishing
those who are the true problem to society. What many Texans, as well as Americans, fail to
understand is that prostitutes in our community are ever rarely working independently, and are often
victims of sex trafficking. It is time that our district takes a step to punish those who exploit these
victims for their own selfish

Cyber Bullying Is A Serious Problem
Take a moment to think about how important technology is in our world today. Our generation
depends solely on the internet, using it for social media, entertainment, and study purposes. What is
behind the internet that we do not realize? Bullying comes in many different forms whether getting
targeted on the playground, at work, or even on the internet. Bullying is a violent and harmful act.
This violence has been around for as long as schools have been around, but bullying has increased
elsewhere. The act of cyberbullying, which is bullying that takes place on any form of technology, is
expanding abundantly, with "more than one out of every ten young people saying they have
experienced cyberbullying" ("Social Media Bullying Has Become a Serious Problem."). While
certain precautions can be taken to in attempts to bypass this violence, the thought of avoiding
cyberbullies is unattainable. When accessing any form of technology, online bullying cannot be
averted due to the growth of technology, social expectations, and anonymity.
There are many precautions that can be taken in attempts to avoid cyberbullying. Technology users
of younger ages can be taught very valuable information, "[t]eaching kids to respect others and take
a stand against bullying of all types" will help avoid bullying all together ("STOP Cyberbullying:
Preventing Cyberbullying."). What happens when respect is not being taught? Bullies will be
unavoidable, since this is the case in our world today. Respect is

Runaway Juveniles Are Not A Serious Problem
National surveys suggested that 6%–7% of adolescents run away from home in the United States
(Sanchez, Waller, & Greene, 2006; Tyler & Bersani, 2008). Most runaways rarely stay away from
home for long periods and stay within 50 miles of home (Hammer, Finkelhor, & Sedlak, 2002).
Although runaway juveniles are not a serious problem (Kim, 2006) and eventually return to parents
or guardian (Milburn et al., 2007), they are victimized and exposed in deteriorate circumstances
while away. There were many problems for runaway juveniles, in spite of returning after a short
period of time, such as increasing their likelihood of engaging in high–risk behavior, being exploited
or victimized by others, and resorting to illicit activities (Chen, Thrane, Whitbeck, Johnson, & Hoyt,
2007; Kipke, Simon, Montgomey, Unger, & Iversen, 1997; Wagner, Carlin, Cauce, & Tenner, 2001).
However, few researchers explained the reason of why adolescents run away from home (Andres–
Lemay, Jamieson, & MacMillan, 2005; National Runaway Switchboard, 2008; Safyer, Thompson,
Maccio, Zittel–Palamara, & Forehand, 2004; Van der Ploeg & Scholte, 1997; Welsh, 1995). They
claimed that the most common reason is negative family environment. Safyer et al. (2004) found
that 41% of the adolescents attributed their runaway behavior to a poor relationship dynamic with
their parents. Poor parenting practices and physical abuse increase the likelihood that a child will
run away (Matchinda, 1999; P. Kurtz, G. Kurtz, & Jarvis,

Teenage Pregnancy : A Serious Problem
Teenage pregnancy is widely viewed in our society as a serious problem. According to Pregnant
Teen Help, over 750,000 teenagers will get pregnant each year. This is a statistic that has lowered in
numbers since the 1990's mainly due to more teen pregnancy prevention programs in schools and
contraceptive availability(). The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate than any other
industrialized country in the world. About a third of these teens abort their pregnancies, 14 percent
suffer a miscarriage, and 52 percent take their pregnancy to a full term, 72 percent of these teenagers
are out of wedlock (). Many of these teenage girls that become pregnant end up with disastrous
results they either leave school altogether or miss an entire year due to the pregnancy, thus
graduating a year later. They receive low grades or fail due to excessive absences related to health
issues. Once the child is born some teenage mothers do not have time to complete homework
assignments because they are too tired after seeing to their child's needs. Teenage pregnancy is an
important social issue because becoming a mother at such a young age, the risk of social and
economic disadvantage tends to be greater. The majority of teenage mothers come from very low
income families and in the communities in which they live in they are surrounded with weak public
school systems and dangerous environments such as drugs, delinquency and gang members. Already

A Serious Problem Of Testicular Cancer
A serious problem that exists among the Maori population in some areas of N.Z. is testicular (teste)
cancer. It affects young men from all backgrounds and there is little research on what risk factors
there are. The encyclopaedia Britannica online defines teste cancer as a "disease characterized by
uncontrolled growth of cells within the testis, the reproductive organ that produces sperm. Testicular
cancer represents only 1 percent of all cancers in males, but it is the most common malignancy for
men between ages 15 and 35."1 Whether or not teste cancer is the most serious health problem
among Maori arguable and additional health related problems should be discussed. First of all,
testicular cancer is one of the most crippling diseases creating significant damage on patient and
family. Additionally, the discrepancy between Maori and Pakeha diagnosis of testicular cancer is a
cause for concern. Contrariwise a lack of knowledge on the difference between Maori and Pakeha
psychology and the way Psychologist/Psychiatrist deal with Maori patients. Finally, there is general
reluctance for Maori to seek mental health which leads to difference between diagnosis and
treatment.
Firstly, the mental and physical anguish that surrounds testicular cancer is so significant because it is
the most common cancer affecting men between the ages of 15 and 39, but it is not limited to this
age range. However, young men typically do not get a lot of cancer, so overall testicular cancer is a

Overfishing Is A Serious Problem
Overfishing is a serious problem that often gets overlooked. In the article by Udy Bell, called
"Overfishing: A Threat to Marine Biology," Bell talks about how only 1 percent of the world's
oceans are marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs not only help protect oceans by allowing habitats
to recover from damage caused by overfishing but also allow fish to safely reproduce. Due to
fishing fish faster then they can reproduce, many species of fish are going endangered or already
endangered of being extinct. Species like whales, dungongs, sea cows, codfish, jewfish, sharks, and
other marine vertebrates are examples of fish that are being overfished. Overfishing was addressed
at the World Summit in Johannesburg, Africa in 2002 (Bell 17). At the World Summit, many experts
in the field of overfishing agreed that the most effective way to battle overfishing is by creating and
establishing more MPAs around the world. Although overfishing is a serious problem, there are
ways to solve the problem like creating Marine Protected Areas. Gutierrez 2
Humans are the ones responsible for the damage caused to our oceans by overfishing. MPAs are
essential to preserve and protect the biological diversity of the oceans (Kechington, Ward, Hegerl 7).
In "The Benefits of Marine Protected Areas," by Richard Kenchington, Trevor Ward, and Eddie
Hegerl, talk about why MPAs are crucial to the prevention of overfishing. In a Food and Agriculture

their household and at school, abuse of drugs, self– hatred of themselves, and at the most serious
level can lead to thoughts of suicide. Society needs to be able to recognize the signs of depression
and help control the disease before it is too late to help. Many teens across the United States of
America live daily with Teen Depression. According to Mayo Clinic, there is not one single known

Domestic Violence : A Serious Problem
There is no denying that domestic violence directed towards women is a serious problem all over the
world, and here in the United States. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that
every 9 seconds, a woman is physically assaulted or abused in America.(NCADV) To understand
domestic violence, one must first understand what domestic violence can consist of, and that is; the
use or threat to use physical, sexual, or verbal behavior to force the partner to do something one
wants; to degrade or humiliate; to gain or maintain a sense of power or control; to act out one 's
anger inappropriately. Abusive behaviors may include subtle or covert harm as well as life
threatening acts of violence. (NCADV) Domestic violence towards women is becoming increasingly
talked about and discussed problem, and is receiving more attention than ever. There is now a better
understanding on why women are easily targeted, how domestic violence can be stopped, and how a
woman can receive help for emotional or physical damages to herself. Domestic violence can occur
no matter the victim 's ethnicity, gender, varying age groups, or sexual orientation. Men are also
victims of abuse, about 1 in every 7 men in America will experience some form of abuse from their
spouse or significant other in their lifetime.(NCADV) But, the fact is is that women are more
susceptible to become a victim simply because they are scared to leave their partner, or convince
themselves that things will change, or

World Hunger And Solutions

  • 1. World Hunger Is A Serious Problem There are 805 million malnourished people in the world today. One in nine people don't get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger and malnutrition are, in fact, the number one health risk in the world. It is greater than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined (Ackerman, 2002). World hunger is a serious problem battering our nation and surrounding nations. The USDA and United Nations are confronted with this issue. Kids are crying out in pain, as there is never enough food to feed them. Someone needed to stop this hunger and find a way to solve this problem. Earl Butz, the secretary of agriculture, decided to step in. He developed a plan to increase the size of farmers and the production of crops. Although the plan never thoroughly worked, it is the only way we will ever be able to feed the world. With the advancements of GMOs, we are able to morally provide food for the world. ' World hunger is a serious situation that has been nagging our country since the introduction of GMOs. Discovered in 1973, the idea for man–made transgenic crops which would produce higher yields, rocketed the economy and agricultural world. The central issue is that there is not enough food to go around to feed everyone. How do we produce more food? The solution is easy, we need people who are willing to designate days, hours, and nights working, planting, and harvesting throughout the entire year. These are the superheroes of the agricultural world, also know ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Cyberbullying Is A Serious Problem Cyberbullying Bullying has existed for generations. Bullying use to occur face– to –face; you knew who the bullies were and where they lived. Because of available technology, a bully can be totally anonymous on the internet. Technology advancements, internet and social networks have produced a new method of bullying called cyberbullyimg. Cyberbullying incidents have become widespread in the past few years. According to DoSomething.org," almost sixty percent of young people say that they have been cyberbullied before. Sixty–eight percent of teens agree that cyber bullying is a serious problem. Eighty–one percent of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person" (11 Facts 2013). Cyberbullying is a serious problem with devastating consequences and we should be doing everything possible to control it. Victims of cyberbullying can be harassed by different methods and by various behaviors. Cyberbullying occurs when a young person embarrasses, threatens, humiliates or torments another young person over the internet, cell phone or through text messages. Cyberbullies want their victims to feel bad about themselves. It is normally not a one– time occurrence but repeated many times (Cyber Bullying Statistics 2013). Social media networks such as Facebook and MySpace have proven to be a popular device in bullying on the internet. Bullies will use various techniques to disguise what they are doing from outsiders. They will use codes, intentional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Serious Problem of Domestic Violence The writer of this essay discusses about family violence, a serious social problem, and its effects on the public. Family violence also known as domestic violence "is when someone uses abusive behaviour [physical, sexual, or emotional] to control and/or harm a member of [his or her] family, or someone with whom they have an intimate relationship." (Department of Justice) The writer explains why family violence/domestic violence is a social problem and whom the issue affects. The writer describes, how the problem shallows the whole society and the families with family violence occurring in the household. In this essay the writer discusses the cost of domestic violence and affects of it on the average taxpayers. This essay highlights the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Young children might not be the direct targets of the abuse, yet witnessing abuse in the household can harm them permanently and can cause psychological and behavioural problems. Children exposed to violence at home act different as compared to the children living in a healthy family. Witnessing abuse or being victim to abuse "increases one's risk of delinquency, adult criminal behavior and violent behaviors" (O'Keefe, 1996). Children are considered a nation's future and family violence leaves negative remarks on children. The negative impacts and experiences disrupt young children from contributing to the maximum in the society and fill in their role. Family is a first institution of socialization. Children perform what they observe, and if young children observe one parent abusing the other parent he or she will be raised with the idea that family violence is a norm and will contribute to the cycle of family violence in the future, and the cycle will continue on without being questioned. Children who witness and are victim of abuse at home are more likely to have aggressive behaviour, which includes arguing with everyone, disobedience in school, disrupting class with rude behaviour. (Moylan et al. 2009) Such behaviour affects other children in school even though they are not part of the household where the abuse is occurring. Family violence is not easily pointed out because anyone can be a target of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Juvenile Delinquency : A Serious Problem Juvenile delinquency is a serious problem in the United States as a whole, and especially in the state of Illinois. Illinois is known for having crime problems especially in the urban Chicagoland areas. Implementing juvenile delinquency intervention programs may be the first step to combating this crime problem. There is potential to reduce future crime if the youths of today can be reached and helped with these programs. I have picked four programs which I believe will help combat these delinquency issues and reduce the juvenile crime in Illinois. Aggression Replacement Therapy Aggression Replacement Therapy also known as ART, was created by Arnold Goldstein, Barry Glick, and John Gibbs. This program was designed to focus on at–risk youths who exhibit aggression, anti–social attitudes, and impulsive behaviors. The goal of ART® is to improve social skill competence, anger control, and moral reasoning. Modality. ART uses a three–pronged program to achieve success. The program incorporates three specific interventions: skill–streaming, anger control training, and training in moral reasoning. Skill–streaming uses modeling, roleplaying, performance feedback, and transfer training to teach prosocial skills. In anger–control training, participating youths must bring to each session one or more descriptions of recent anger–arousing experiences (hassles), and over the duration of the program they are trained in how to respond to their hassles. Training in moral reasoning is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Gang Violence : A Serious Problem Gang violence is a serious problem in America today, and it is also prevalent in the other countries in the world. "According to a national gang survey, the most recent estimate indicates that there were about 760,000 gang members in 24,000 gangs in the United States in 2004" this just supports the statement that it is a huge problem in the United States (Cooper, 2009, p. 1). Unfortunately, the Youth of America and these other countries have been a large demographic of these gangs for many years due to many contributing factors. One criminal factor that initiates gang violence are the overwhelming presence of adolescents and young adults involved with gangs, Celinda Franco states that not only youth participants but whole "youth gangs" have been on the radar for policy makers since the early 1900's (Cooper, 2009, p. 2). Another factor is the nature of the remorseless and often violent nature of these gang related offenses many gang members act as if they have no conscience and no values, and the fact that a large percentage are "easy to influence" youth doesn't help the case that most commit gang crimes on a whim. Finally, the fact that most of these gang related offenses that the youth carries out are in poverty stricken neighborhoods that have very poor socioeconomic status, this it is a bad situation that is difficult to escape from because young adults and adolescents do not have the means to move outside this zone and may never attain this goal (Cooper, 2009, p. 3). ... • 11. Bullying Is A Serious Problem Bullying has become a very serious problem in today's schools, with one in four kids being bullied on a regular basis (School Bullying Statistics, 2015). More specifically kids between sixth and tenth grade are more likely to have involvement in bullying (School Bullying Statistics, 2015). Bullying can include physical, verbal or psychological attacks or intimidation intended to cause fear, or harm to someone (Ttofi & Farrington, 2010). Verbal bullying accounts for about 77% of all bullying (School Bullying Statistics, 2015). This can include spreading rumors, yelling, name calling, or other derogatory language based on race, gender, and more (School Bullying Statistics, 2015). Today with social medias popularity, cyber bullying has become increasingly popular, with 80% of high school students having reported being witness to, or being involved in cyber bullying (School Bullying Statistics, 2015). Due to the increase in technology and a multitude of apps, bullying can be done on phones, computers, and other forms of technology (Issurdatt, 2010). Text messages, emails, and posting pictures have become a major problem and easier for students to join in on the bullying behaviors (Issurdatt, 2010). This can make it difficult for schools to get involved because of the amount of bullying that continues outside of school. These are only a few examples of why anti–bullying programs are needed at a school–wide level. Students who are bullied continue to experience poor self–esteem, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Rape Is A Serious Problem Only rapists know when they will strike their prey with sexual assault. The victims, both men and women, never see themselves in such a situation. But, what if both the victim and rapist are equally to blame in that situation? What if women could be able to and should do everything they can to prevent being raped? Is it possible that victims are not doing everything they can to prevent rape or defend themselves when they are being violated? The argument of to whom the fault actually belongs to has been a long occurring ordeal that perhaps may never be resolved. Rape is a serious problem, which is why it is one of the most highly debated topics in today's society and media. Many actors and actresses have spoken out against rape, some are even victims. There has also been a growing amount of concern towards women expressed by many anonymous Twitter accounts. Those accounts have helped make teenagers and other social network users more aware of rape culture. According to the Marshall University Women's Center, "rape culture is an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture" ("Women's Center" marshall.edu page 1). Women believe that rape culture is emphasized through arrogant language, women being objectified by men, the overuse of television sexual violence, and teaching the victims not to be raped instead of teaching the rapist not to rape. • 15. Homelessness : A Serious Social Problem Homelessness is a serious social problem in most American cities. Homeless people are those who sleep in the open air or in provisional accommodation such as shelters or hotels, have no settlement after expulsion or release from jail or hospital, or dwell provisionally with relatives or friends on account of shortage of housing (Crane et al. 154–155). American economy has developed very fast since 1980s, but homeless population has been increasing. They seem to be seen here and there in public place and are usually associated with poverty, insecurity, drug addiction, crimination, illness and other negative impacts on a society. In San Francisco, officially there are about 6,400 homeless people (Roberts). "According to a poll from San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, homelessness has overtaken affordability as the No. 1 concern among San Francisco residents" (Green). These data indicate that this issue gets more and more attentions, and now it is a crisis that requires immediate action. Though the local government is trying to move homeless people in houses from streets by planning to build more transitional housing centers, the result upsets residents as there are still many homeless people in this city. Besides, it is not a particular social problem in San Francisco, but it exists in most American cities and in other countries all over the world. Therefore, in hope of having some reference value for solving this problem in other cities or countries, this essay identifies the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Cyberbullying : A Serious Problem Cyberbullying In the past decade there has been a serious advance in technology and social media. With that advance comes incredible opportunity and chances. But also with that advance comes the serious evil and bad through cyberbullying. Thousands of people are cyberbullied every day, indirectly and directly through Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, DM, Instagram, Ask.fm, etc. Cyberbullying is a serious problem that effects people of all ages and causes incredible and devastating problems in our society. With the incredible advance in technology and social media, cyberbullying seems innocent and easy, but truly is extremely harmful and crushing to its victims and can result in major mental and social issues, insecurity, depression, and even suicide. With huge advances in technology and social media in the past decade, it is easy to comment or post about someone. Though social media can be used for good, it can also bring about the issue of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the harassment or attacking of someone through social media or text messaging, and is truly a real and evident issue throughout the world. Specifically based out of schools, many victims are attacked via Twitter, Instagram, text, DM, Snapchat, Facebook, etc. by people in their schools. Unlike regular bullying, cyberbullying is in a sense "hidden". It is done behind closed doors and a screen. How easy is it to post something opposed to actually attacking someone in person. Suicide is a serious health problem that takes an enormous effect on family, friends, communities, as well as active military personnel and veterans. Suicide is only a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Suicide risk factors are features or conditions that can increase the chances that a person might think of taking their life. • 25. Global Warming : A Serious Problem For someone who does not celebrate Christmas, December was enjoyably warm last year. My grandfather said he brought the warmth when he came back from Pakistan the month before; but for me, the outdoor activities that weekend were a guilty pleasure. I had daymares about sea levels rising and destroying the beautiful seacoast I have always called my home, my daughter growing up in a world lacking in luxuries that I have always had, cursing me for not taking care of the earth that she was to live on. I saved my grandpa the worry of what I know is a very serious problem: Global Warming("What's Behind the Freakishly Warm Winter in the Eastern U.S.?"). Accordingly, there is a popular quote that frequents my Facebook newsfeed regularly: "There is no Planet B." This would have meant nothing to me before, but taking Introduction to Environmental Issues has enlightened me on the true complexity of the global warming crisis. We have an exponentially growing human population with proportionally increasing demands that rob the health of this planet. Every single action we take is linked to toxic waste choking the immense but limited ocean. Pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is exposing every vulnerable life to the harmful rays of the sun and drowning precious land where water shouldn't be. Global warming is no longer a debate but a crisis to be quickly addressed, considering more than 97 percent of scientists agree that climate change is a direct result of human ... • 27. Prison Overcrowding Is A Serious Problem Prison overcrowding is a result of the imprisonment of drug users and first time offenders of non– violent crimes. The number of people being incarcerated greatly outweighs the number of prisons across the country. Prison overcrowding is a serious problem because it can be dangerous to both prisoners and correction officers. When prisoners are forced to live in crowded situations, the possibility of violence is greater (Oliver 44). Issues such as assaults and rapes can occur when there is not enough supervision over the prisoners. Not having proper security is a result of the prisons being overcrowded. As more criminals become imprisoned, other prisoners are released due to the lack of space. Because prison overcrowding has become such a serious issue across the country, rehabilitation, halfway houses, probation, and house arrest are a few alternatives to prison for non– violent offenders that can decrease the prison population. Rehabilitation is the most effective alternative to prison due to the high percentage of incarcerated non violent drug users. There are over two million prisoners in America's prison system, and about one–fourth of them were convicted for drug offenses (Mitchell par.1). Not only do rehabilitation facilities help with the problem of prison overcrowding, but also helps individuals with sobriety and keeps them away from the drug–related activities. Victims, criminals and their families are touched by the outcomes of crime. Crime has increased over the years and is continuing to do so. The city of Memphis has experienced a great increase of crime. Memphis Police have developed initiatives to reduce crime, using federally funded programs. Unfortunately, crime problems such as theft, assaults and homicide have become irrepressible over the last three years. "The rate of homicide in Memphis is more typical of cities of its size. Assaults were accounted for 65 percent of deaths in the area."(Kellermann, Rivara & Lee,1996,p.1438–1440). The Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) is very successful for keeping track with the rates of these crimes. The environment, the personality of the perpetrator and genetics has all been factors to blame for criminal behavior. Although, these factors have potential to play a role in the reasoning behind criminal acts, they will have to be supported. Criminological theories can hold the context to support the evidence of these factors. Understanding crime and developing strategies are the keys in taking the step to initiate a strategic plan. When addressing theft, assaults and homicide, the initiatives will have to be considered and provisions will be made for a successful reduction in crime. • 31. Bullying : A Serious Problem The issue of bullying may seem insignificant and petty, but the truth is we are conditioned to ignore it. The fear of being the next victim has caused many to lose sight of their moral compass when it comes to defending one another or standing up for what is right. Instead we cower and turn our attention to giving way to the biggest and loudest voice. Most people are prone to neglect the fact someone is being bullied, because once again they fear becoming the next victim. School bullying is a problem found all across the United States and around the world. It can take many forms, including physical violence, psychological bullying, name–calling, taunting, teasing, and social exclusion. Bullying was once thought of as a normal ... It does the opposite of empowering students; physical and verbal abuse can result in lack of confidence, being unable to adjust to people or environments and overall failure to thrive. If there is no healing after physical and/or verbal abuse from the wounds inflicted, then the chances of the victim moving forward to success will not occur. Bullying is defined as "a process in which one person repeatedly uses his superior strength or influence to mistreat attack or force another person to do something."1 Being bullied is a part of most every child's life today; studies show that millions of kids are bullied each year with little to no intervention. Bullying can sometimes do permanent psychological damage which never heals. If not dealt with in a timely manner the students can undergo damage ending in insanity or suicide. Bullying does not only affect the victim, it can also traumatizes the innocent bystanders who witness the abuse while seemingly remaining helpless to stop the act. Bystanders can "be reluctant to attend school, feel fearful or powerless to act and guilty for not acting, have increased mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, and have increased use of tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs."2 Most bullying happens when a bystander is not around to ... • 33. Obesity : A Serious Problem Essay Obesity is a serious problem in the United States, it is also a rising issue affecting people of all ages and incomes. Overweight and obesity are words to describe having excess body fat. Obesity or overweight status are determined by the measure of body mass index; BMI uses the calculation based the ratio of someone's height and weight. Research has shown that BMI shows a good estimate of "fatness" and correlates well with important health outcomes like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and overall mortality. Obesity is a very concerning and rapidly increasing health issue, my public health analysis will primarily be focusing on childhood obesity and overweight. In the United States, 20 percent of children aged 6 to 11 are obese. This rising trend is one that is likely to endure and have long term devastating influences on the population unless there is action taken to reverse this issue. "Obesity is not only a cosmetic concern. It does not just impact the way we look. It can change the course of our lives, and not for the better." (American Heart Association, 2012) I came across this statement and could not agree any less. Childhood obesity impacts many things from medical complications such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease, to mental and psychological issues such as poor self–esteem, depression, stress, and the list goes on. Homelessness Is A Serious Social Problem Homelessness in America has been a considered a serious social problem for at least thirty to forty years, affecting thousands upon thousands of people in all regions of the country. The individuals and families that make up the homeless population face struggles every day that many of us may never even experience in our entire lives. There are many factors that either contribute to or directly cause homelessness. Unfortunately, many people in our society believe that homelessness is a personal problem and should be up to the individual to fix. However, homelessness is actually a very serious social problem that we all need to be concerned about and work together to bring it to an end. The American society is so accustomed to labeling each other just by looks, clothing, and other material goods. Power, wealth, and prestige seem to be the only things that many people want to live for, and those people do not attempt to put themselves in other peoples shoes, especially not the shoes of a homeless person. This is a terrible habit that has been such a huge part of our society for so long that a lot of people do not even see the problem with it. They may not even realize how wrong and terrible it is to label someone just by their looks or their life situation. • 55. Childhood Obesity : A Serious Problem We are what we eat. Most of us have heard this many times, and just do not believe it; however, it is shockingly true. The human body is made up of the nutrients it extracts from foods (Katz). The importance of the statement "We are what we eat" often goes unrecognized, thus causing a major problem: parents not providing healthy diets for their children to ensure their best quality of life. Childhood obesity is a serious problem in America, and I believe it stems from parents. I have witnessed this first hand with my niece. It really bothers me that my sister–in–law often feeds my niece desserts and junk food instead of meats and vegetables. I have noticed that my niece is overweight and developing slower than she should. My family thinks it is cute, but I think it is starting her off in the wrong direction and posing problems for her future health. "For children and adolescents aged 2–19 years, the prevalence of obesity has remained fairly stable at about 17% and affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents for the past decade"("Childhood Obesity Facts"). The number one cause for obesity is consuming an unhealthy diet filled with extra calories the body does not need. In a study of 6,212 children ranging in ages from four to nineteen, one–third ate fast food every day. By consuming fast food that often, it is likely to add about six extra pounds per child each year and increase the risk for obesity (Holguin). Although childhood obesity is problematic, there are ... The 21st century is special because of the technology and information available. Yet, people continue to ignore the overwhelming destruction happening to nature. Through many years, masses have begun to take responsibility and restore the planet. In time, the earth might be what it once was. Climate change began in the 1820s with Joseph Fourier and in the 1860s with John Tyndall. Fourier put into motion the "greenhouse effect." An effect where trapped gasses in the lower atmosphere absorb the sun's heat. Tyndall found that "greenhouse gasses" cover the earth like a sheet. This is how the earth keeps cool and warm. Yet, too much greenhouse gasses can be futile. During this time, humans did not know that they were the ones causing implications. 100 years later, Svante Arrhenius proposed that "...doubling the CO2 content of the planet's atmosphere would raise its temperature by 2.5 to 4.0 degrees Celsius" (Frank, para 7). Any slight change in temperature can offset the ecosystem. People began to act to save their planet, but there are still many in denial. A way to lower greenhouse gasses is to protect the forests. Humans have used and still use trees for many purposes: warmth, shelter, and food. Wood, fruits, nuts, roots, shoots, and branches of a tree are all useful. The soil from cleared forests are also nutrient rich. Deforestation is not a new occurrence. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The fast food industries realize that gaining children as customers at a young age most likely makes them a life–long customer (Nestle 28). Sadly soft drink companies unapologetically name 8 to 12 year olds as marketing targets (Nestle 31). Clearly these companies are targeting younger kids so they buy their products in the future so their businesses strive in the future years. The amount of money spent on marketing directed to children and their parents rose from $6.9 billion in 1992 to $12.7 billion in 1997 which is pretty crazy (Nestle 31). • 61. Climate Change Is A Serious Problem Climate Change is a Serious Problem to the Planet "Climate change is happening, humans are causing it, and I think it is perhaps the most serious environmental issue facing us." This quote from Bill Nye illustrates the serious nature of climate change. Climate change is the most serious issue that is plaguing the world. Global temperatures have been increasing in recent years and it is clear that our climate is changing. Climate change is the change of temperature and weather in our environment over long periods of time. A majority of scientists suspect that humans are causing climate change by emitting CO2 into the atmosphere which creates a greenhouse effect and warms the planet. The effects of climate change are far–reaching, impacting ocean life and plant life across the globe. It also directly impacts humans because global temperatures may cause sea levels to rise and temperatures become too warm to live in. Climate change is real and is occurring because the effects of climate change can be seen in our oceans, in global temperature increases, and because humans are directly causing climate change. Climate change can be seen through the effects on our oceans. The planet is warming and an increase in global temperatures causes ice to melt. Unfortunately, this cycle is becoming problematic as it warms the planet's temperatures. According to NASA, "Global sea level rose about 17 centimeters (6.7 inches) in the last century. Lurking underneath the mask of common businesses or seemingly normal neighbors, sex trafficking is prevalent not only throughout the world, but in our very own communities. Just months ago in May, Galveston County residents were shocked to hear that four Galveston men were charged with federal charges for their alleged involvement for conspiring to recruit, entice, and harbor minors for sex trafficking. (KHOU, 2015). These men had allegedly transported underage girls to various hotels throughout Galveston County, forcing them to have sex with men and then keeping all of the profits. This situation is unfortunately a recurring theme happening throughout the U.S., with our citizens oblivious to the horrors that are occurring just down the street in modern suburbia. Victims of sex trafficking are often subject to horrendous treatment from not only clients, but by their traffickers as well. The issue however is that sex trafficking is often right in front of our eyes, yet we continue to punish victims rather that punishing those who are the true problem to society. What many Texans, as well as Americans, fail to understand is that prostitutes in our community are ever rarely working independently, and are often victims of sex trafficking. Although runaway juveniles are not a serious problem (Kim, 2006) and eventually return to parents or guardian (Milburn et al., 2007), they are victimized and exposed in deteriorate circumstances while away. There were many problems for runaway juveniles, in spite of returning after a short period of time, such as increasing their likelihood of engaging in high–risk behavior, being exploited or victimized by others, and resorting to illicit activities (Chen, Thrane, Whitbeck, Johnson, & Hoyt, 2007; Kipke, Simon, Montgomey, Unger, & Iversen, 1997; Wagner, Carlin, Cauce, & Tenner, 2001). Species like whales, dungongs, sea cows, codfish, jewfish, sharks, and other marine vertebrates are examples of fish that are being overfished. Overfishing was addressed at the World Summit in Johannesburg, Africa in 2002 (Bell 17). At the World Summit, many experts in the field of overfishing agreed that the most effective way to battle overfishing is by creating and establishing more MPAs around the world. Although overfishing is a serious problem, there are ways to solve the problem like creating Marine Protected Areas. Gutierrez 2 Humans are the ones responsible for the damage caused to our oceans by overfishing. MPAs are essential to preserve and protect the biological diversity of the oceans (Kechington, Ward, Hegerl 7). In "The Benefits of Marine Protected Areas," by Richard Kenchington, Trevor Ward, and Eddie Hegerl, talk about why MPAs are crucial to the prevention of overfishing.
