Sleeping Disorders In America
85 sleep disorders affect more than 70 million people across America (Borreli, 2014). There are
many contributing factors to why people don't get enough sleep, and also many long term effects it
can have on them. Generally, lack of sleep can be caused by stress, mental or medical problems, or
even just choosing to stay up late. The effects it can have on a person's body can be sometimes
deadly, while other times they are treatable or not as serious. Treating insomnia, sleep apnea, or any
other type of loss of sleep can consist of a regular sleep schedule and limiting caffeine, alcohol, or
energy drinks. The amount of sleep a person gets depends on their age, and also any mental or
medical problems they may have. People 13 and under generally ... Show more content on

Some of the main causes are stress of daily life, anxiety, fear, old age, medical or mental health
conditions, and trading sleep for work or play. Often times, people mistake sleep disorders for stress
and ignore them. This can lead to more serious problems and in the rare case, death. One third of
Americans have symptoms of insomnia, and less than ten percent are identified by primary–care
doctors (webmd.com). Losing sleep for a long time can result in chronic insomnia which can be
difficult to treat and lead to several side effects. Some common and immediate symptoms can be
fatigue, lack of energy, headaches, irritability, and muscle fatigue which causes the muscles to ache
when not rested. Other side effects are a lack of concentration, nausea, memory lapses, and loss of
attention and alertness. A person's performance and alertness can go down 32 percent with just one
night of not enough sleep (webmd.com). Job and vehicle accidents and injuries can be caused by the
lack of sleep because a person isn't capable of staying awake. Memory loss can also be a problem;
impairing it and the cognitive ability which helps think and process information. In the long run,
lack of sleep can have some minor effects and also some major ones. It can increase blood pressure,
cause depression and mood problems, or lead to a heart attack, heart failure or a

Essay about Sleeping Disorders
Sleeping Disorders
I am going to start by telling you what a sleeping disorder is. A sleeping disorder is a problem that
affects something to do with sleep. Not all sleeping disorders have symptoms that are obvious to a
person or their family and friends, here are some common sleep disorders.
– Insomnia – Sleep Apnea – Narcolepsy – Restless Leg Syndrome – Parasomnia
– Bruxism – Jet Lag – Shiftwork
I will be discussing the sleeping disorders listed above and what symptoms they can cause.

hygiene.
There is another sleeping disorder called Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea is not really problems with
going to sleep, it is more dealing with problems while you are sleeping. Some of the symptoms of
sleep apnea include
– loud or irregular snoring – excessive daytime sleepiness – repeated nightly arousals – non–
refreshing sleep – morning headache – nightly periodic absent breathing Loud snoring at night can
be more than just a nuisance. It can actually signal to you that something could be wrong with
breathing during sleep. In most cases, there are no serious medical consequences associated with
snoring.
But for about 20 million Americans, this loud, habitual snoring can indicate a life–threatening
disorder know as sleep apnea. An apnea is actually a lack of breath. For most people during sleep, it
is normal for the breathing muscles to relax. The problem is, for some people, excessive muscle
relaxation occurs which disrupts breathing. Disordered breathing during sleep also can occur if the
brain stops sending the needed messages to the breathing muscles. In either case, the presence of
apnea should be taken seriously.
Sleep apnea is more common in middle–aged men and overweight people.

An Analysis Of Peter Pan, By J. M. Golding 's ' I Die...
J. M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, said: "To die would be an awfully big adventure." I believe it
would be. I have had many experiences with almost dying. I have had many experiences where my
life had flashed before my eyes. April 4th, 2014, I almost died 27 times. On that date, I looked death
right in the face, and laughed at it.
In the summer, I was supposed to go to a girls camp for my church. There were a few requirements
we had to pass off before going. One of them was a 3 mile hike and a camping trip. We decided to
hit 2 birds with 1 stone. So we set a date to go camping with the girls who were going to camp.
There were about 16 girls who decided they would go. We set off on our 1 night trip on April 4th,
2014. It started off normal. A regular trail through the woods. The path started to get thinner and
thinner as we walked on it. We then got to a part where we had to go over a log that was partly
hanging over a chasm. I peered over the edge to see thousands of sharp rocks and a large pool of
rushing water. After 3 girls had gone over the log safely, it was my turn. I slowly put my right leg
over the enormous log. I had made sure to steady myself before putting my left leg over. After I had
done so, I threw my left leg over and sat on the log. Then I put my right foot on the ground. I
thought I was safe, but my left foot 's, shoelace got caught on the rugged wood. I pulled with force,
but that was a bad idea. I got it undone, but that force threw me off balance

Sleeping Disorders
Sleeping Disorders Sleeping disorders may seem minor, but many can cause severe health damage.
These health damages vary within each type of sleeping disorder. On an average, people will spend
25 years sleeping and it is astounding how little people know about what goes on after they turn the
lights off and lay their heads down; sleep can help people strengthen memories, improve physical
performance, and become faster learners. There are many different types of sleeping disorders,
including Insomnia which is the inability to fall asleep. Sleep Apnea is another sleeping disorder that
interrupts breathing during sleep and causes an increased risk of heart disease. This sleeping
disorder causes people to wake up as many as 100 times a night. ... Show more content on

PLMD is kicking movements in the legs and arms, and each leg movement can wake a person up. It
is often repeated every 20–40 seconds, and the range of people over 60 that have PLMS is 64%.
Remedy's of Health Communities stated, "PLMD is a common sleep disorder, especially in the
elderly" (Stanley J. Swierzewski). Since these movements at night tend to wake people up at night,
PLMD usually causes patients to have daytime drowsiness. Most people that have this sleeping
disorder are unaware of it unless someone is asleep with them in the same bed. Cases of PLMD
have been treated with sleeping pills that have also been helpful for treating the movement disorder
of Parkinson's disease. Overall, PLMD is a very intricate sleeping disorder with aspects that can

What Can Families Help A Family Member With A Sleeping...
My research question is: What can families do to help a family member with a sleeping disorder? I
became interested in learning about sleeping disorders about two years ago when my step father was
diagnosed with a sleeping disorder (sleep apnea). I wanted to know more about what exactly a
sleeping disorder was and treatments a person needed to care for a sleeping disorder. Before we
discovered my step–father had a sleeping disorder we noticed he slept all day struggled staying
awake. Some days he would even stay up all night and have trouble going to sleep. I never thought
sleeping disorders were real. I always figured people who didn't sleep were used to staying up all
night and there body was trained to not sleep. As crazy as that sound I had no idea how serious this
disorder was. My family and I would sometimes joke about my step father sleeping hours on in the
day until he was rushed to the hospital for not breathing while he was sleep. This was a wakeup call
for my entire family because we realized we had no idea on how to help him. I was curious to know
what we could do to help him get normal eight hours of sleep and not suffer from sleep. I also
wanted to help families that may can relate to my situation and help them as well. Anyone who
knows someone who struggles with sleeping disorders know how difficult it is seeing a love one not
getting enough rest or getting too much rest that can cause them to be hospitalized. So I decided to

Rape In Sleeping Beauty Variants In Fairy Tales
Rape in Sleeping Beauty Variants When thinking of fairy tales, the first thing that comes to mind is
not rape, consent, or sex. However, most fairy tales contain some aspect that alludes to sex or sexual
activities, especially the fairy tales that are not targeting children. It is important to note the
definition of rape because although there is one set meaning behind the term rape, rape is different
depending on the person asked. A perfect example of a fairy tale in which rape is prevalent is
Sleeping Beauty. While not all Sleeping Beauty stories contain a rape, a significant amount of the
popular versions do, which is why it is important to highlight it. These variants include, "Sun,
Moon, and Talia" by Giambattista Basile and "Briar Rose" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There are several forms of rape such as stranger rape and marital rape, and in some countries marital
rape is legal, which changes the definition of rape in those countries. Despite this, rape is seen in
Sleeping Beauty variants. According to Daniel Rautio, a psychology student, rape is, "defined as one
person forcing another, without this person's consent...to have intercourse or other forms of sexual
activity. The same definition applies if the person is violated in a vulnerable state such as sleep,
unconsciousness...". The form of rape seen in most Sleeping Beauty tales is stranger rape. Stranger
rape is when a woman is attacked by a stranger (Rautio). However, rape can be between
acquaintances, partners, spouses and more. The effects of rape can be both physical and mental. The
victim can start to build up defense mechanisms "such as denial, suppression and dissociation"
which all take a toll on the body (Rautio). Suppression allows the victim to forget about the incident
at the time, but memories can flood back when triggered by an occurrence and often cause negative
responses. Additionally, rape is traumatic which could lead to depression or Posttraumatic Stress
Disorder, both of which are debilitating disorders. These can go on for months to a lifetime and
affect the person who has them

Sleeping Disorders In College Students
College students face many difficulties and stressors in college, both academically and non–
academically. Some of these challenges include, but are not limited to: financial, health and personal
issues. The workload that students can receive from classes as well as the college environment may
result in issues that are more health related, such as stress disorders, depression, and anxiety. These
in turn may lead to other issues such as sleeping problems or sleeping disorders. Students may
develop bad habits that can play a factor as well. Sleeping disorders not only affect a student's
ability to work and to interact in the college setting, but can also affect a student's mental health.

avoidable for college students, having good sleeping habits or good health habits can decrease the
risk of a college student getting one. While sleeping disorders and sleeping issues may not seem to
be common in college students, it is actually both more common and a larger issue than what most
people think it is. One of the benefits for college students who live on campus or off campus is that
it can give students experience on how to take care of themselves since this may be the first time for
an extended period amount of time that they are away from family. They also are able to meet
people who are interested in the same kind of things that they are or people who are going into the
same fields as they are. They can develop contacts that they may use when looking for a job after
graduating college. Managing sleep patterns can lead to an improved college experience for the

Sleeping Disorders Essay
Having a disorder is something very normal and common where several can be treated and many
not. Sleeping disorders on the other hand may be dangerous or minor. There are over 100 different
kinds of sleeping disorders going from difficulty in falling asleep at night to unnecessary morning
sleepiness. Sleep disorders can be divided into three categories; those making insomnia
(sleeplessness), those causing daytime sleepiness, and those distracting sleep. Insomnia is the most
common. It affects almost 95% of the population. Sleep disorders develop from many causes but
they generally form as a result of health problems. Some sleeping disorders include Sleep Apnea,
Restless legs syndrome (RLS), and Narcolepsy. Around 18 million of the American population have
sleep Apnea, but few of them have been diagnosed. People with sleep Apnea experience sudden
pauses in their breathing while they are asleep. Physical changes, such as sudden loss of weight or

trouble sleeping. Signs of RLS can occur at any age, but the most severe cases usually occur in the
elderly. Many RLS patients have a disorder called periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), which
causes repetitive jerking movements of the limbs, particularly the legs. The movements happen
every 20 to 40 seconds and can cause wakening throughout the night. Treatments prescribed for
RLS and PLMD include drugs that affect dopamine, a neurotransmitter. However, because RLS and
PLMD are not well understood, the reasons that drugs affecting the levels of dopamine in the brain

Sexism In Fairy Tales
Once upon a time in a land not so far away, the society of man created the idea that it was a woman's
job to conform to the ideologies generated in fairy tales. From women depending on their prince
charmings all the way to romanticized sexual abuse and lack of consent, stories like Cinderella and
Snow White radiate sexism within an array of scenes of the stories and films. Not only does this
affect the way that men view women, but it has had a relatively negative effect on the ways that
many women view themselves. Many fairy tales have made their way into mainstream culture, and
today many young girls and boys grow up hearing and seeing the subliminal messages in fairy tales.
As more and more fairy tales make their way onto the big screen, it can be seen that all princesses
seem to share a common feature other than their crowns and lack of self worth without a man by
their side; their tiny waists. In recent years during the 21st century more and more people in the
media have been calling out fairy tales for their anti–feminist attitudes with sexism, body standards
as well as societal comments about women being dependent on men. As technology and media have
developed, many folktales have evolved from simply being fairy tales to being a significant element
in the world of modern pop culture. In the past feminism was not as culturally accepted, and sexism
was the norm. As time went on these stories with crooked ideologies were passed down, without
many changes in the main

intervention followed a treatment manual that had been used in three previous treatment trials. It
included educational materials about sleep and the key CBT for insomnia components, which
included sleep restriction, stimulus control, relaxation training, and cognitive strategies. The
participants in the TAU group received routine individual treatment for insomnia, which was
provided in primary care settings. Routine individual treatments could be from a mental health

Narcolepsy treatment: there is no cure yet, but there are still ways that can help you live a normal
life. Counseling and having a support group can help you to connect with others that are having the
same problems as you. Following a regular sleep agenda such as getting about 8 hours a night can
help you get back onto a normal track. Also, eating a healthy diet and exercising can give you the
healthy balance in your life that you may be missing. Avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine is also
important in order to have a healthy state of mind. 2. Insomnia treatment: Like treatment for

Stereotypes In Disney Movies
"When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires will

princesses are portrayed according to female stereotypes: they are obsessed with love, waiting for a
man, and always beautiful, and these portrayals are harmful to young girls. Disney is now starting to
catch up with the reality of what women are like now, with Disney movies like Frozen, Princess and
the Frog, and Brave these girls are portrayed as independent women in control of their destiny.

Sleeping problems is known to have countless psychological effects on women, but a new study
links negative mood swings coming from bipolar disorder to a lack of sleep. Bipolar disorder is a
chronic mood disorder in which symptoms range from depressive lows to manic highs. Problems
with sleep like insomnia, is synonymous with individuals suffering from the mood disorder.
Likewise, excessive sleeping is also a symptom, primarily seen during the depressive side of the
illness. According to the study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, 216 participants were

Previous studies confirm these findings and have also linked lack of sleep to development of full

symptoms of bipolar disorder. It is because of this, that researchers conducted a seperate study on
men. As the results concluded, men with bipolar disorder have a personality trait called neuroticism.
This personality trait could better predict mood outcomes in men rather than lack of sleep. And the
reason why poor sleep has stronger affects on women, could potentially be the result of a biological
factor. Researchers also believe that women have more persistant depressive episodes than men do.
Additionally, women tend to also have coexisting conditions such as anxiety, eating disorders and
migraines. Dr. Erika Saunders, chair, department of psychiatry at Penn State College of Medicine,

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which your breathing is interrupted during sleep. There are two separate
forms of sleep apnea, one is obstructive and the other is central. Obstructive sleep apnea is when the
tissue in your throat collapses and blocks your airway, and central sleep apnea is when your brain
doesn't signal your muscles to breathe. This disorder can be caused if you: smoke, are an overweight
male, have high blood pressure, or have a neck circumference larger than 15.75 inches. A few of the
symptoms of sleep apnea are: extremely loud snoring, choking during sleep, shortness of breath,
daytime fatigue, waking up with a sore throat, or using the restroom a lot at night. Sleep apnea can
be treated with a machine called the CPAP device. The CPAP device is a mask machine that
provides a stream of air through your nose and mouth. This device keeps your airways clear at all
times, while you sleep. Another way to treat it is by having a tonsillectomy or an adenoid removal.

Sleeping Disorders In Older Adults
Sleep and Sleep Disorders in the Older Adult There are four main reasons why we sleep. The first is
for cardiovascular relaxation which lower blood pressure, lowers heart rate, and lowers metabolic
rate. The second reason is for mental and physical restorative properties. Lack of sleep will then
manifest itself with physical and cognitive side effects such as fatigue, difficulty focusing, slower
response times, memory problems, decreased balance, and decreased ability to perform tasks. The
third reason we sleep is to help with learning. Studies have shown that good sleep prior to taking
tests increases performance. Finally sleep is the only cure for sleepiness. Daytime sleepiness can
cause a person to fall asleep while reading, watching television, talking to others, or even driving.

Sleeping disorder is a medical disorder of the sleep models of a human being or an animal. The
sleeping disorders interfere with the normal mental, physical, social, and emotional functioning of
the body. The commonly ordered sleeping disorders are polysomnography and actigraphy. This
paper provides a critical analysis of a 2010 article written by Jane F. Gaultney called The prevalence
of sleep disorders in college students: impact on academic performance.
The article's main objective was to examine the prevalence of danger for sleeping disorders among
the students who are in college and also their effects on the grade points average (Jane, 2010, pg 91).
Their age and gender was also considered in the analysis. According to Jane (2010, p. 92), the
survey was conducted on 1845 college students at large from a southeastern public university. The
methodology used was the validation of the sleep disorder questionnaire that surveyed the sleep data
for the 2007–2008 academic year in the university. The students' grade points average were also
obtained from the registrar's office and matched against the students' questionnaire details and then
analysis was done. The students faced several sleep problems which could have an impact on their

Rapunzel As A Prime Example Of The Damsel Archetype
I previously referenced my relationship to the mythical character Rapunzel as I believe she is a
prime example of The Damsel archetype. The most popular adaptation of Rapunzel was by the
Brothers Grimm in their Children's and Household Tales folklore book. The story of Rapunzel
begins with her father who steals a rampion from the garden of an enchantress. To atone for his sin,
the enchantress seizes infant Rapunzel from her parents. She raises the child as her own in a
secluded tower without stairs or doors leading to the outside world. As prince is leisurely exploring
the forest, he overhears the enchanting singing voice of a young women. He follows the resonance
of her melodies and comes across the tower. The voice belongs to Rapunzel, who is now in her early
teenage years. The prince was completely captivated by her voice and desired to release her from
her brick cage and marry her. Having found out his plan, the enchantress casts an evil spell on the
prince leaving him blind. By fate, Rapunzel then escapes the tower and is reunited with the prince.
Out of grief, she holds his face and weeps over his body. Unknown to Rapunzel, her innocent tears
have a unique healing quality that lifts the curse off the Prince's eyes. The Damsel is exemplified
many times throughout this fairytale, specifically with the seclusion of Rapunzel. In many
adaptations, Rapunzel has little to no experience with the world surrounding her tower. She fears
escaping the tower out fear of the

Fairy Tales By Giambattista Basile
Fairytale live in the minds of their tellers and hearers, growing and changing with each telling. The
same tales told six hundred years ago still live in the minds of today. Fairy tales hold a unique magic
because they are able to grow, to change, and to become important to each new generation. In the
time of the tales of the Grimm Brothers were created, people lived in fear of magic and witches.
While Pentamerone, by the poet Giambattista Basile was born in the sunny, temperate climate of

and class difference where each person played a vital role. There lies the difference such as
Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty both tales originated around the same time but reflecting two

More than 80 percent of people with RLS suffer from PLMD. PLMD characteristics include
involuntary twitching or jerking movements during sleep. RLS is caused by underlying varicose
veins in the legs. Varicose veins are caused by unhealthy valves within the veins. When the valves
fail or leak, blood flows backwards through the poorly functioning valves. The blood also appears to
be twisted or bulging during this occurrence. RLS sufferers go through pain, fatigue, itching,
burning, cramping, and throbbing and both men and women can suffer from PLMD starting at any
age. After RLS there is a disorder called secondary RLS. Secondary RLS is caused by a separate
underlying medical condition. It's associated with the use of certain drugs. Some conditions
including vein disease in the legs such as varicose veins, kidney failure, low levels of iron or
anemia, pregnancy, and peripheral neuropathy. Stress, diet, or other environmental factors can also

If there is one message that most fairy tales have, it is that good will always triumph over evil. That
is also prevalent in the dark tale from the Brothers Grimm, "The Juniper Tree". A story full of
cannibalism and homicide still manages to lead up to an iconic happy ending. Interwoven through
every ironic sentence are symbols. Connections with tales from Greek Mythology to Biblical times
hide the true macabre nature of the story of (as it is also called) "My Mother Slew Me, My Father

The stepmother mimics this act almost to a tee. After beheading her stepson with the lid of an apple
chest and tricking her daughter to re–knock off his head, she and her daughter (against her will)
chop him up and cook him into puddings. They then share a meal together, father included, feasting
on the child's remains. This sociopathic and remorseless act also reflects upon Kronos' character
traits. Unforgiving, unyielding, and controlling, he (as the mother does) sets his downfall up through
the desire for power. And she, as Kronos did, found her death through the cunning of the person she
was desiring to control. Kronos wanted to remain the Lord of the universe eternally, and he was told
that his children would overpower him. The Stepmother feared that her stepson would inherit more
than her daughter would, therefor overpowering her. Both Kronos and the Stepmother act the same
way, and eat their offspring. But, in Kronos' case, he eats a blanket full of rocks instead of Zeus (all
part of Zeus' plan) and becomes sick. With the Stepmother, she hears birdsong and feels sick, "as if a
heavy thunderstorm were coming...so full of distress and uneasiness...as if there were a fire in [her]
veins". Her stepson's sickly–sweet birdsong is the treachery with which he resembles Zeus. After
Kronos regurgitates his children, Zeus uses the same method of dismemberment that Kronos used to

Overcoming Sleeping Disorder: Personal Experience
I have always had problems sleeping due to trauma and have struggled for years to help myself
control my insomnia and not let it control me. Sometimes it would come in handy and I could use it
to my advantage but most of the time it just ruined me, my attitude, my focus, and my ability to
cope. Naps were out of the question, I would literally have to stay awake until my body and mind
gave out, something had to give eventually. No matter what I did, how much I exercised, what I ate,
how much caffeine I didn't drink, what medications I tried, it all never really helped me. I was so
sick of always just putting a band aid on everything and it never ever solved the underlying problem.

I have always used music to help me remember things, for school and such, and it was when I came
to this realization that I thought, since I was trying to unearth the memories and put together the bits
and pieces that were coming out through my unconscious, I could play music while I slept to help
me remember what I dreamt about when I was awake. Not only did this help me to remember but I
also found that it helped me stay asleep because it broke up the sometimes night–long dreams into
shortened spurts that were easier to keep track of. I could hear some of the songs while I slept, when
the song changed, so did my dream. I would always hear the music just before I woke up and when I
played them when awake; sure enough I could remember details from my dreams or at least how I
felt. Once I woke up I would play the playlist I developed before I went to bed and write while I
listened. I would write about whatever came to mind, free association, and when I faced the
complete reality, it was the scariest thing I had ever encountered. I opened a door that could never be
shut again and I began to remember exactly what happened in my past that was affecting my life
now. I begin to rationalize about the memories. I knew that when you're a child you may not know
exactly what happened but you always remember how it made you feel. It was something that took

Stereotypes In Fairy Tales
Young girls spend a majority of their childhood reading books about princesses, dressing up in
pretty dresses, wearing plastic tiaras on their heads and dreaming about how one day they will grow
up to live a life just as perfect. However, what they fail to realize is that these various fairy tales
provide them with false hopes with regards to how their future will be. Young girls make the
assumption that if they acquire the characteristics of those which the fairy tales revolve around, they
will one day meet their prince charming, and live "happily ever after." Princesses are portrayed as
these women who appear to have light skin, slim waists, amazing hair and perfect skin. They watch
all these movies as they get older and see how perfect these princesses are and will want to be just
like them. A child who has grown up reading and watching these fairytales will soon begin to feel
self conscious about how they look and will feel upset when they don't reach society's expectations
in how they should look because, Fairy Tales present unrealistic expectations for young girls who
base their futures off what is portrayed in these stories. In an article written by Elizabeth Danish she

After all the other conditions causing insomnia have been eliminated, a comprehensive sleep history

medications used which can be either prescriptions or non–prescriptions and alcohol consumption

Sleep Disorders Sleep disorders occur when a person has changes in their normal sleeping patterns.
There are many known sleep disorders, but some are worse than others. Some of the most common
sleep disorders are sleep paralysis, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. Sleep disorders can have effects on
a person's life, and they can even be deadly. There are treatments for most of these disorders, but
some are still being researched. Sleep disorders are very common, and most people are not aware of
them. Sleep paralysis is a very scary experience that many people encounter before waking up or
falling asleep. It can happen once in a lifetime, or for some, it could happen every night. Although it
is a very common occurrence, most people do not realize this, and they think they are alone. The
body paralyzes as a normal part of the sleep cycle, but during sleep paralysis, something goes
wrong. The mind is awake, and the person is fully aware of what is going on, but the body is still
asleep. When sleep paralysis occurs, the body is very still, and it may seem as if there is a force that
is holding the person down. Some people report shortness of breath, demons, and weird
hallucinations. There are reports of people hearing footsteps, voices, and even seeing demonic
figures. The person can see their surroundings, but their eyes are closed. If one tries to speak, their
words may not come out. There is no movement because the body is paralyzed. Sleep paralysis can

Sleep and Sleep Disorders in the Older Adult Getting a good night sleep is important for many
reasons. The average person should get between 7–8 hours of sleep per night to function properly.
Less than 7 hours or more than 9 hours of sleep on a regular basis increases mortality rates. A person
who routinely gets less than 6 hours of sleep per night can increase their risk of hypertension. A
person who gets less than 5 hours of sleep per night increases their risk of coronary events such as
heart attacks and strokes. Adequate sleep can also affect a person cognitively. For example, a good
night sleep can help a person learn better. According to the video, the proper order for remembering
information to take a test is to study, then sleep, and then take the test. Improper sleep can also cause
a lack of concentration, depression, irritability, and changes in personality. When a person has sleep
apnea, their tongue falls to the back of their throat which blocks the airway. This causes pauses in
breathing, which in turn, causes loud gasping and snoring. The person with sleep apnea has many
periods of wakefulness throughout the night. The effort channels of the chest and the abdomen move

The Correlation Between Disney Movies and Poor Body Image...
Disney was named the world's second top media company in the US for the year 2004. They have
produced over 44 "classics" and are one of the most recognized names in animated film
(Peterson). We expose young girls to these animated films at a very young age, yet doing so does not
seem to be good for these children. Disney's movies are littered with a virtually unattainable image
of what a woman should look like and feeding such images to girls at a young age is wrong and
causes low self esteem and poor body image.

the movie, rather than her liberated warrior's gear. Unfortunately the warrior's gear is not as pleasing

More often than not, princesses are portrayed as feminine and dainty, interested only in clothes,
jewellery, and seducing the handsome prince. These are not ideal traits to be teaching children, yet
we expose them to media reinforcing these traits with hardly a second thought. The need to fit the
dainty feminine role of women portrayed by these princesses is becoming very evident in the
adolescents of today. There is evidence that young women who hold the most conventionally
feminine beliefs – who avoid conflict and think they should be constantly nice and pretty – are more
likely to be depressed than others. In a survey released last October by Girls Inc., school–age girls

There are three main sleeping disorders that affect people all across the world. A sleeping disorder is

activities during your sleep. The three different sleeping disorders I am going to be talking about are
insomnia, night terrors, and narcolepsy. Each of these are unique in their own way and affect a
person differently.
The most common sleeping disorder that affects an estimated 30%–50% of the general public is
insomnia. Insomnia is persistent troubles or problems falling and staying asleep, this disorder can be

A night terror is when someone experiences great fear and screams loudly while they are still asleep,
it is described as a terrible nightmare that will not be remembered by the person. This sleep disorder
only affects a very small percentage of the general public, it is more common in young children, but
also can affect adults. Treatment for night terrors is similar to the treatment of insomnia, but therapy
is mainly the best fix for this. Night terrors are usually caused by stress, but many other things can
cause someone to experience this sleeping disorder.
The last type of sleeping disorder is narcolepsy, this is defined as an abnormal amount of daytime
sleepiness. Narcolepsy is a very strange thing, at one moment a person can be fully awake, then the
next they can be sleeping anywhere. It is an uncontrollable urge to just fall asleep. This disease is
incurable, but treatment can help with the frequency of the attacks, the helpful treatments include
therapy, medications, and seeing a specialist. The cause of narcolepsy is not well understood, but
many believe it is due to the genetic factors or from abnormal signaling in the

Common Sleep Disorders
Sleep apnea is common in most people. It may briefly stop your breathing since there is blockage in
the upper airways. This may cause pauses in breathing throughout the night and interrupt your sleep,
leaving you waking up each hour. Often times people with these issues do not remember waking up
each hour and feel exhausted during the day.(Smith) The most common sleeping disorder is
Insomnia. Insomnia is a condition where you are unable to wake up feeling rested and refreshed.

Fairy Tales Speak trough Symbols
Fairy tales have fed the imagination of many generations during the centuries. Through these stories,
the human's mind can fly beyond the reality and create new worlds with their specific rules and
creatures. Symbolism is an intrinsic element of these creative stories. Fairy tales convey many
meanings through symbols and consequently create a deeper space for their audiences. They look
like a road that every time a person passes through them, he/she can find new things around.

In the "sleeping beauty", the dangers of puberty is symbolized by an accident in which a spindle that
pricks Briar Rose 's finger and causes the "evil prophecy to be fulfilled" (J.Grimm and W.Grimm).
For Snow White this danger is symbolized through a comb: "an old woman, [pulls] out the poisoned
comb and holding it up and [snow white] let herself be deceived, and opened the door" (J.Grimm
and W.Grimm). In another part of the story, the snow white has a bite of a poisoned apple (again
symbolizing the danger of puberty and falls to the ground dead (J.Grimm and W.Grimm). (Stone 46)
emphasizes on the fact that both events of "Snow White" being sent out to be murdered, and
Sleeping Beauty being put to sleep occur at puberty time .
Both stories try to symbolize the curiosity of the heroine towards her own body and her attempt to
explore her sexuality is "punished with near death" (Stone 47). Sleeping Beauty tries to navigate
through all the hidden places of the castle and during this navigation she finds "a little door, with a
rusty key sticking out of the lock;" (J.Grimm and W.Grimm) which eventually leads to the activation
of the curse. Here, as (Freud) mentions, "the human body as a whole is [symbolized by] a house and
the separate organs of the body [are symbolized by] by portions of a house ". In "Snow White's
story, the heroine gets tempted in exploring her sexuality (symbolized through the temptation of

How Does Disney Present Beauty In The Little Mermaid
Not only do you see the meaning of beauty that Disney presents in his protagonists, but his
antagonists too. Disney presents beauty trumps everything else is in The Little Mermaid. Ursula, the
antagonist of the story, is depicted as fat, ugly, and mean. This leaves you with the thought that it is
okay to judge a book by its cover. Without knowing the inside truth to Ursula, she is assumed to be
the mean one who takes something very valuable away from Ariel. In Snow White, the old,
unattractive woman tempts her to eat an apple that would kill her. In Cinderella, the three step sisters
and the step mom all have attitudes as mean as their looks. There's no proof that Disney pushes girls
to be overly concerned with looks, but it is definitely an underlying messages in every one of the
princess films.
The way the female body is presented in Disney produced films represents current socio–cultural
assumptions of what the female body should look like (Johnson). These princesses reflect social
standards of beauty. To be beautiful you must be young, thin, attractive, and elegant. ... Show more

Gender Stereotypes in Fairy Tales
Fairy Tales have been around for generations and generations. Our parents have told us these stories
and we will eventually pass them down to ours. In this time of age the most common fairytales are
Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and The Beast and many more. Children idolize
their favorite character and pretend to be them by mimicking everything they do in the stories. The
character's behavior is what is viewed as appropriate in society. These fairy tales show a girl and a

These stories, for example, The Little Mermaid, Arial wants to drastically change her body to be
with a man she does not even know or has ever talked to yet she is in love with him. That story
gives the wrong impression to young girls and gives them the idea that if they do not look like these
princesses or look a certain way that they are not accepted in today's society. Another example of
this is the Victoria Secret Fashion show for two hours women who are size 0 with so much make up

they look but it is not their fault it is how we as a society have taught them to be like to be accepted.
In addition to having to look like a model what comes next in these fairy tales? Of course it's their

Nightmares that occur frequently are a parasomnia (or a disorder characterized by abnormal or

unfold that often depict imagery or situations that are particularly disturbing or frightening to the
individual experiencing them, and may often come from fears in their own subconscious. When

Nightmares often invoke sounds and images to invoke fear in the subject. Sleep terrors contain no

There was no wind and no clouds that morning, just still air and cold sunshine. The hair in my
nostrils froze almost immediately. When I took a deep breath, my lungs only filled up halfway.
I opened the tailgate to excited whines and whimpers. I never go skiing without Jackson and Hailey:
my two best friends, my yin and yang of dogs. Some of you might know Jackson. He's the oversized
sheepdog–and–something–else with the great big nose and the bark that will shatter glass. He gets
out and about more than I do. People I've never seen before come by my house daily and call him by
name. He's all grace, and he's tireless; he won't go skiing with me unless I let him lead. Hailey is not
so graceful, and her body seems in constant indecision when she runs. When we ski she stays behind
me, and on the downhills she tries to sneak rides on my skis.
The dogs ran circles in the chest–high snow while I inventoried my backpack one more time to
make sure I had everything I needed. My sleeping bag, my Thermarest, my stove, Alex's bivvy sack,
matches, lighting paste, flashlight, knife. I brought three pairs of long underwear – tops and bottoms
– so I could change once before I went to bed, and once again in the morning, so I wouldn't get
chilled by my own sweat. I brought paper and pen, and Kool–Aid to mix with my water. I brought

Other side effects are a lack of concentration, nausea, memory lapses, and loss of attention and alertness. A person's performance and alertness can go down 32 percent with just one night of not enough sleep (webmd.com). Job and vehicle accidents and injuries can be caused by the lack of sleep because a person isn't capable of staying awake. Memory loss can also be a problem; impairing it and the cognitive ability which helps think and process information. • 14. An Analysis Of Peter Pan, By J. M. Golding 's ' I Die... J. M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, said: "To die would be an awfully big adventure." I believe it would be. I have had many experiences with almost dying. I have had many experiences where my life had flashed before my eyes. April 4th, 2014, I almost died 27 times. On that date, I looked death right in the face, and laughed at it. In the summer, I was supposed to go to a girls camp for my church. There were a few requirements we had to pass off before going. One of them was a 3 mile hike and a camping trip. We decided to hit 2 birds with 1 stone. So we set a date to go camping with the girls who were going to camp. There were about 16 girls who decided they would go. We set off on our 1 night trip on April 4th, 2014. It started off normal. A regular trail through the woods. The path started to get thinner and thinner as we walked on it. We then got to a part where we had to go over a log that was partly hanging over a chasm. I peered over the edge to see thousands of sharp rocks and a large pool of rushing water. After 3 girls had gone over the log safely, it was my turn. I slowly put my right leg over the enormous log. I had made sure to steady myself before putting my left leg over. After I had done so, I threw my left leg over and sat on the log. Then I put my right foot on the ground. I thought I was safe, but my left foot 's, shoelace got caught on the rugged wood. I pulled with force, but that was a bad idea. I got it undone, but that force threw me off balance ... • 22. What Can Families Help A Family Member With A Sleeping... My research question is: What can families do to help a family member with a sleeping disorder? I became interested in learning about sleeping disorders about two years ago when my step father was diagnosed with a sleeping disorder (sleep apnea). I wanted to know more about what exactly a sleeping disorder was and treatments a person needed to care for a sleeping disorder. Before we discovered my step–father had a sleeping disorder we noticed he slept all day struggled staying awake. Some days he would even stay up all night and have trouble going to sleep. I never thought sleeping disorders were real. I always figured people who didn't sleep were used to staying up all night and there body was trained to not sleep. As crazy as that sound I had no idea how serious this disorder was. My family and I would sometimes joke about my step father sleeping hours on in the day until he was rushed to the hospital for not breathing while he was sleep. This was a wakeup call for my entire family because we realized we had no idea on how to help him. I was curious to know what we could do to help him get normal eight hours of sleep and not suffer from sleep. I also wanted to help families that may can relate to my situation and help them as well. Anyone who knows someone who struggles with sleeping disorders know how difficult it is seeing a love one not getting enough rest or getting too much rest that can cause them to be hospitalized. • 26. Rape In Sleeping Beauty Variants In Fairy Tales Rape in Sleeping Beauty Variants When thinking of fairy tales, the first thing that comes to mind is not rape, consent, or sex. However, most fairy tales contain some aspect that alludes to sex or sexual activities, especially the fairy tales that are not targeting children. It is important to note the definition of rape because although there is one set meaning behind the term rape, rape is different depending on the person asked. A perfect example of a fairy tale in which rape is prevalent is Sleeping Beauty. While not all Sleeping Beauty stories contain a rape, a significant amount of the popular versions do, which is why it is important to highlight it. There are several forms of rape such as stranger rape and marital rape, and in some countries marital rape is legal, which changes the definition of rape in those countries. Despite this, rape is seen in Sleeping Beauty variants. According to Daniel Rautio, a psychology student, rape is, "defined as one person forcing another, without this person's consent...to have intercourse or other forms of sexual activity. The same definition applies if the person is violated in a vulnerable state such as sleep, unconsciousness...". The form of rape seen in most Sleeping Beauty tales is stranger rape. Stranger rape is when a woman is attacked by a stranger (Rautio). However, rape can be between acquaintances, partners, spouses and more. The effects of rape can be both physical and mental. The victim can start to build up defense mechanisms "such as denial, suppression and dissociation" which all take a toll on the body (Rautio). Suppression allows the victim to forget about the incident at the time, but memories can flood back when triggered by an occurrence and often cause negative responses. Additionally, rape is traumatic which could lead to depression or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, both of which are debilitating disorders. There are over 100 different kinds of sleeping disorders going from difficulty in falling asleep at night to unnecessary morning sleepiness. Sleep disorders can be divided into three categories; those making insomnia (sleeplessness), those causing daytime sleepiness, and those distracting sleep. Insomnia is the most common. It affects almost 95% of the population. Sleep disorders develop from many causes but they generally form as a result of health problems. Some sleeping disorders include Sleep Apnea, Restless legs syndrome (RLS), and Narcolepsy. Around 18 million of the American population have sleep Apnea, but few of them have been diagnosed. The movements happen every 20 to 40 seconds and can cause wakening throughout the night. Treatments prescribed for RLS and PLMD include drugs that affect dopamine, a neurotransmitter. • 38. Sexism In Fairy Tales Once upon a time in a land not so far away, the society of man created the idea that it was a woman's job to conform to the ideologies generated in fairy tales. From women depending on their prince charmings all the way to romanticized sexual abuse and lack of consent, stories like Cinderella and Snow White radiate sexism within an array of scenes of the stories and films. Not only does this affect the way that men view women, but it has had a relatively negative effect on the ways that many women view themselves. Many fairy tales have made their way into mainstream culture, and today many young girls and boys grow up hearing and seeing the subliminal messages in fairy tales. As more and more fairy tales make their way onto the big screen, it can be seen that all princesses seem to share a common feature other than their crowns and lack of self worth without a man by their side; their tiny waists. In recent years during the 21st century more and more people in the media have been calling out fairy tales for their anti–feminist attitudes with sexism, body standards as well as societal comments about women being dependent on men. As technology and media have developed, many folktales have evolved from simply being fairy tales to being a significant element in the world of modern pop culture. In the past feminism was not as culturally accepted, and sexism was the norm. As time went on these stories with crooked ideologies were passed down, without many changes in the main ... The participants in the TAU group were more likely to be female, not White, and unemployed than the participants in the CBTI group. With regard to sleeping baseline, the participants in TAU had slightly poorer baseline sleeping patterns and were more likely to be on sleeping medications; they also had a much longer history of insomnia (Cape et al., 2016). The participants in the CBTI group had to attend five weekly 90–minute group treatment sessions. The groups were comprised of 5–15 participants. The intervention followed a treatment manual that had been used in three previous treatment trials. It included educational materials about sleep and the key CBT for insomnia components, which included sleep restriction, stimulus control, relaxation training, and cognitive strategies. The participants in the TAU group received routine individual treatment for insomnia, which was provided in primary care settings. Routine individual treatments could be from a mental health practitioner or a CBT therapist. The results showed that participants in the CBTI group had better sleeping outcomes post–treatment than those in the TAU group. There were smaller effects at 20 weeks. The most popular adaptation of Rapunzel was by the Brothers Grimm in their Children's and Household Tales folklore book. The story of Rapunzel begins with her father who steals a rampion from the garden of an enchantress. To atone for his sin, the enchantress seizes infant Rapunzel from her parents. She raises the child as her own in a secluded tower without stairs or doors leading to the outside world. • 106. Sleeping Disorders Essay Sleep Disorders Sleep disorders occur when a person has changes in their normal sleeping patterns. There are many known sleep disorders, but some are worse than others. Some of the most common sleep disorders are sleep paralysis, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. Sleep disorders can have effects on a person's life, and they can even be deadly. There are treatments for most of these disorders, but some are still being researched. Sleep disorders are very common, and most people are not aware of them. Sleep paralysis is a very scary experience that many people encounter before waking up or falling asleep. It can happen once in a lifetime, or for some, it could happen every night. Although it is a very common occurrence, most people do not realize this, and they think they are alone. The body paralyzes as a normal part of the sleep cycle, but during sleep paralysis, something goes wrong. The mind is awake, and the person is fully aware of what is going on, but the body is still asleep. When sleep paralysis occurs, the body is very still, and it may seem as if there is a force that is holding the person down. Some people report shortness of breath, demons, and weird hallucinations. There are reports of people hearing footsteps, voices, and even seeing demonic figures. The person can see their surroundings, but their eyes are closed. If one tries to speak, their words may not come out. There is no movement because the body is paralyzed. Sleep paralysis can occur for as long as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 110. Sleeping Disorders Essay Sleep and Sleep Disorders in the Older Adult Getting a good night sleep is important for many reasons. The average person should get between 7–8 hours of sleep per night to function properly. Less than 7 hours or more than 9 hours of sleep on a regular basis increases mortality rates. A person who routinely gets less than 6 hours of sleep per night can increase their risk of hypertension. A person who gets less than 5 hours of sleep per night increases their risk of coronary events such as heart attacks and strokes. Adequate sleep can also affect a person cognitively. For example, a good night sleep can help a person learn better. According to the video, the proper order for remembering information to take a test is to study, then sleep, and then take the test. Improper sleep can also cause a lack of concentration, depression, irritability, and changes in personality. When a person has sleep apnea, their tongue falls to the back of their throat which blocks the airway. This causes pauses in breathing, which in turn, causes loud gasping and snoring. The person with sleep apnea has many periods of wakefulness throughout the night. The effort channels of the chest and the abdomen move in opposite directions in a person with sleep apnea. They have produced over 44 "classics" and are one of the most recognized names in animated film (Peterson). We expose young girls to these animated films at a very young age, yet doing so does not seem to be good for these children. Disney's movies are littered with a virtually unattainable image of what a woman should look like and feeding such images to girls at a young age is wrong and causes low self esteem and poor body image. The term body image refers to a person's sense of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the physical appearance of his or her body ("Body Image"). Girls are susceptible to influences telling them what they should look like even at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Mulan does appear, she is typically in the kimono–like hanfu, which makes her miserable in the movie, rather than her liberated warrior's gear. Unfortunately the warrior's gear is not as pleasing to the eye. Instead it is bulky and manly, neither of which a desired trait for a princess (Hurley). More often than not, princesses are portrayed as feminine and dainty, interested only in clothes, jewellery, and seducing the handsome prince. These are not ideal traits to be teaching children, yet we expose them to media reinforcing these traits with hardly a second thought. The need to fit the dainty feminine role of women portrayed by these princesses is becoming very evident in the adolescents of today. There is evidence that young women who hold the most conventionally feminine beliefs – who avoid conflict and think they should be constantly nice and pretty – are more likely to be depressed than others. In a survey released last October by Girls Inc., school–age girls overwhelmingly reported a paralyzing pressure to be "perfect": not only to get straight A's and be the student–body president, editor of the newspaper but also to be "kind and caring," "please everyone, be very thin and dress right." A sleeping disorder is a problems with sleeping, such as having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or performing strange activities during your sleep. The three different sleeping disorders I am going to be talking about are insomnia, night terrors, and narcolepsy. Each of these are unique in their own way and affect a person differently. The most common sleeping disorder that affects an estimated 30%–50% of the general public is insomnia. A night terror is when someone experiences great fear and screams loudly while they are still asleep, it is described as a terrible nightmare that will not be remembered by the person. This sleep disorder only affects a very small percentage of the general public, it is more common in young children, but also can affect adults. Treatment for night terrors is similar to the treatment of insomnia, but therapy is mainly the best fix for this. Night terrors are usually caused by stress, but many other things can cause someone to experience this sleeping disorder. The last type of sleeping disorder is narcolepsy, this is defined as an abnormal amount of daytime sleepiness. Narcolepsy is a very strange thing, at one moment a person can be fully awake, then the next they can be sleeping anywhere. It is an uncontrollable urge to just fall asleep. This disease is incurable, but treatment can help with the frequency of the attacks, the helpful treatments include therapy, medications, and seeing a specialist. These tales often shape the lessons we learn, remember and reference throughout our lives. Older fairytales are much different than our modern day Disney and teach us different lessons. Disney is often the soft lesson. What I remember are things like be kind, courageous, stand up for what you believe, and fight the evil around you while falling in love with a prince. The old tales have a much harsher reality leaving lessons about the dangers of the world and evil which didn't always lose. They are different, as the lessons parents needed their children to understand are different from culture to culture and time to time. As a young child I was highly shaped by Disney and as I got older and learned of another fairytale not all of them having a happy ending (like Hans Christian Andersons Little Mermaid when she gets turned to sea foam), taught me of the real world and ... This could be fatally dangerous as drowsiness causes about 100,000 crashes a year, half of the crashes involving teenagers. Lowering grades and lack of respect can be tied to lack and loss of sleep. According to Maas, attempting to educate the adolescent brain at ridiculously early school times (Typically, before 7:30 am) is practically pointless. Fairy tales convey many meanings through symbols and consequently create a deeper space for their audiences. In another part of the story, the snow white has a bite of a poisoned apple (again symbolizing the danger of puberty and falls to the ground dead (J.Grimm and W.Grimm). Both stories try to symbolize the curiosity of the heroine towards her own body and her attempt to explore her sexuality is "punished with near death" (Stone 47). Sleeping Beauty tries to navigate through all the hidden places of the castle and during this navigation she finds "a little door, with a rusty key sticking out of the lock;" (J.Grimm and W.Grimm) which eventually leads to the activation of the curse. Here, as (Freud) mentions, "the human body as a whole is [symbolized by] a house and the separate organs of the body [are symbolized by] by portions of a house ". • 138. How Does Disney Present Beauty In The Little Mermaid Not only do you see the meaning of beauty that Disney presents in his protagonists, but his antagonists too. Disney presents beauty trumps everything else is in The Little Mermaid. Ursula, the antagonist of the story, is depicted as fat, ugly, and mean. This leaves you with the thought that it is okay to judge a book by its cover. Without knowing the inside truth to Ursula, she is assumed to be the mean one who takes something very valuable away from Ariel. In Snow White, the old, unattractive woman tempts her to eat an apple that would kill her. In Cinderella, the three step sisters and the step mom all have attitudes as mean as their looks. There's no proof that Disney pushes girls to be overly concerned with looks, but it is definitely an underlying messages in every one of the princess films. The way the female body is presented in Disney produced films represents current socio–cultural assumptions of what the female body should look like (Johnson). In this time of age the most common fairytales are Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and The Beast and many more. Children idolize their favorite character and pretend to be them by mimicking everything they do in the stories. The character's behavior is what is viewed as appropriate in society.
