Darfur is an area in Sudan that is around the same size as France. It is home to roughly six million people, mostly of which are muslim nomads and
farmers. Despite having the same religious beliefs, the nomads and farmers have a constant struggle. Around 1989, General Omar Bashir used military
coup to gain domination of Sudan. His power enraged local conflicts, causing the struggle between the nomads and the farmers to become more violent.

The Janjaweed has been regularly murdering African farmers and other innocent civilians. Four–hundred thousand people have died and two–million
five–hundred thousand people have been uprooted from their homes. Every month, five thousand lives are taken. Despite the constant growing number
of deaths in the country, the Sudanese government denies having any ties to the Janjaweed. The government pays no attention to the acts of the
Janjaweed. In fact, they seem to condone the violations of human rights that the militia is performing and resist attending to the needs of the people.

INTRODUCTION
Genocide is defined as the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group. "The 'Darfur Genocide' refers to the current
mass slaughter and rape of men, women, and children in Western Sudan" (Mitchell Hamline School of Law). Not only are these atrocities happening,
but the Darfurians are being force from their land and into refugee camps, mainly in the country Chad, but also other countries like Ethiopia or Kenya.
Darfur genocide causes can be found both culturally and politically. The cultural and political causes come from the same source of that being an
underdeveloped country with no effective government protecting the rights of the Darfurians. Darfurians were violently pushed around, physically and
mentally, with the western world not stepping in to assist. Although eventually, both Britain and the United Nations came to the same conclusion that
the atrocities occurring in Darfur were genocide and "one of the world's worst humanitarian crises" (Thomson Reuters). Genocide occurred in Sudan in
the Darfur region starting in 2003 and continues today. The long–standing divide between Arab herding tribes and the African farming tribes and the
political opportunism arising from the environmental calamity led to the genocide in Sudan.

which led to tensions between Chad and Sudan. Chad had huge problems with dealing with the huge number of refugees (Combat Genocide 1). In the
refugee camps, the Janjaweed captured, attacked and raped women when they go outside refugee camps to collect firewood. Many refugees who fled

The analysis of the genocides that took place both in Rwanda and Sudan's Darfur region exhibit some similarities as well as differences. The
character of violence was similar in both cases, but in Rwanda the violence was more intense, participatory, and extraordinary. The violence in these
two places took place in an environment that had experienced civil wars. It was a period of political transition which was further aggravated by ethnic

organizations did in Rwanda and Darfur. However, the UN did not do anything to punish or prevent the genocides that took place in these two
countries. The US government promised to support the peace talk's agreement in Darfur and hold the perpetrators accountable for their acts. It never
kept that promise since nothing has been done. So far, the UN's Security Council has also failed in its peace keeping mission effeorts, and is instead
pressuring Sudan with words only. No solid steps have been made to bring the wrong doers into justice (Shapiro).
In Rwanda, in 1994, the United Nations ignored the call to act fast, and only stepped up after hundred days, after close to 800,000 people had lost their
lives.

Before relating the R2P to the Darfur Crisis it is important to understand the fundamental tenants of the R2P debate in relation to humanitarian
intervention and the repercussions for state sovereignty. The R2P concept can trace its modern origin to the address given by former UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan, to the General Assembly in 1999 putting forward the challenge of preventing another Rwanda.
In response to this challenge the Canadian Government sponsored the foundation of the International Commission on Intervention and State
Sovereignty (ICISS) in 2000 . Its report "The Responsibility to Protect" was released the following year. The report outlines that the main message of
R2P is that sovereignty entails responsibility. Responsibility to protect its citizens from genocide and other gross violations of human rights . Should any

Holocaust survivor and writer, Elie Wiesel in his influential speech "The Perils of Indifference," claims that indifference is the root of all evil and
inhumanity–––all pain and all tragedy has resulted because of indifference. He supports his claim by highlighting the reason for "World Wars," "Civil
Wars," "Assassinations," "Bloodbaths," and "Tragedy–––" indifference (Wiesel par. 5) . Specifically, Wiesel uses imagery to paint an image of what the
innocent victims of indifference experience. The poor "children [that] perish" because of the indifference in a man's soul; until they see the
children's "pain" and "agony" and "hear their pleas," until "one of them dies" because of the "violence," "disease" and "famine," then one will
notice the dangers of indifference (Wiesel par. 23) . Further, the author flashbacks to past events that have left humans without a soul. He mentions

The problem now is that "there [i]s no joy in his heart;" he becomes a victim of indifference–––the metal torture (Wiesel par. 1) . Wiesel's purpose is to
inform humanity of the dangers indifference holds in order to encourage humans to continue to hope for a world without indifference–––no pain, no
horror. He establishes a critical tone for readers by using stylistic devices such as imagery, flashbacks and rhetorical questions in order to achieve his

The citizens were raising their families and animals. To me if more then one million people of the same race are killed I think it would be
genocide. I also believe that it was more than just genocide, because it was the mass slaughtering and rape. The government didn't need to hurt the
citizens of Darfur by doing that. Now the citizens will not cooperate with the government, they will stand alone fighting for what they believe in.
