primary care setting. The state of Arizona will have one of the largest demand for primary care providers in the
nation, with an anticipated 40.5% shortage of primary care providers (Van Vleet & Paradise, 2014). I am fortunate
to be completing an accredited Family Nurse Practitioner Program at such an opportunistic time, advancing my
nursing practice. This paper will outline steps I will take in preparation for the National Certification as a Family
Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
Areas of Study
The Advanced Practice Education Associates (APEA) Predictor Exam consists of 150 generated questions with
rationales identifying strengths and weaknesses (APEA, 2016). According to APEA (2016), an overall score of
greater than 70% has a high likelihood of passing the certification exam. Taking the APEA Predictor Exam as a
classroom assignment with a 73% overall score has giving me a positive feedback to the likelihood of passing
certification on the first time. It has also allowed me to see the areas of study needed to review. Areas of weakness
are ENT, and pharmatherapeutics which are areas of study to focus on initially.

Loretta Ford : The Pioneer Of The Nurse Practitioner Role
History and background Loretta Ford, is commonly known as the pioneer of the nurse practitioner role. The NP
role was shaped by Ford, in collaboration with pediatrician Henry K. Silver in 1965, in response to the need for
providers for well–child care, in community based settings (Zaccagnini & Waud White, 2017). Though many
texts, Zaccagnini included, cite a physician shortage as the impetus for the creation of the role, Ford herself
disputes the emphasis on this shortage, as one of several "myths" many of which continue to influence the NP
movement (Towers, 2011). This creates a view of NPs as "physician extenders" or substitutes for physicians, and
diminishes the role of the NP (Sullivan–Marx et al., 2007). The creation of the NP was in conjunction with nursing
leadership, who were focused on creating graduate nurses for clinical specialization (Towers, 2011). The lack of
providers simply created an opportunistic environment for nurses to reclaim the role that public health nurses had
historically held, focusing on wellness, health promotion and disease prevention (Zaccagnini & Waud White,
2017). The first NPs were certified in the area of pediatrics, but soon began to develop focus on other populations,
such as whole families, gerontology, women's health, or psychiatry.

Advanced practice nurses are in high demand due to the increased pressure within our evolving health care
system, with a renewed emphasis on health and wellness. According to the American Association College of
Nursing, advanced practice nurses must obtain a higher level of learning as well as having key competencies and
skills (American Association College of Nursing). The ultimate goal is to achieve positive patient outcomes,
resulting in an improved health care system. The purpose of this paper is to provide valuable insights into the
education, career path, and roles of a nurse practitioner.
Interview
I conducted my interview with Dr. Karen Lehman, DNP, APRN. Dr. Lehman is a nurse practitioner who currently
works for Newton Medical Center as a hospitalist. She also works as needed basis on the E.R. unit. She affiliates
with other doctors and physicians in other medical groups including; Newton Healthcare Corporation, and Harry
Hynes Hospice, where she also works as needed. Dr. Lehman always had an interest in medicine, but didn't think
she was smart enough to pursue a career in nursing. She worked several odd jobs including that of a fitness trainer.
She's not really sure why she went into nursing, other than she always thought that she wanted to work in an area
where she could help people, and make a difference in their lives. She finally decided to enter Wichita State's
nursing program. After graduation, she worked as an ER nurse at Wesley Medical

Definition of Role
Over the last few years, the nation health system has gone through some significant changes. Factors such as rising
costs of healthcare, population increases, aging in the population as well as divergence in the health division has
played a large role in shaping the health industry. Nursing is one of the professions has gone through a paradigm
change in its organization and capabilities, structure and role stipulations (AHRQ, 2015). Nurse Practitioners
(NPs) are registered nurses who receive advanced education and clinical training, in a wide variety of areas that
range from preventive and acute health care services to individuals in all age groups. Nurse practitioner is usually
involved in the direct practice of nursing, care, and medicine. At the same time, majority of nurse practitioners
practice their skills in several different areas but most are in an ambulatory setting as compared to other nursing
roles that are in an acute care setting (AHRQ, 2015).
A nurse practitioner squarely falls under the clinical department of both medicine and nursing. This is because the
primary role of a nurse practitioner is to provide direct care to the patient as well as delegated medical services.
The oversight is done indirectly and directly by a physician. Additionally, a nurse practitioner diagnoses, contains
