Watching Tv Makes You Smarter, By Steven Johnson
In the article "Watching TV Makes You Smarter," Steven Johnson argues why and how television
can make you smarter. In another article, "Thinking Outside the Idiot Box," Dana Stevens
contradicts everything Steven Johnson said in his article about television making people more
intelligent.
Steven Johnson 's argument is that television can actually make you smarter because when you
watch a show, you are trying to understand everything that is happening. Today's shows have a lot of
action and scenes trying to keep people's attention. Therefore, people carefully tune in to television
shows trying to understand everything that goes on during the show. Johnson said, "You have to pay
attention, make inferences, and track shifting social relationships." For instance, depending on how
the characters interact with one another, changes happen as the plot of the story continues on. An
example of this is if a character happens to disagree with another character and an enemy of both
characters comes into the mix, and those two characters join forces to defeat their enemy. The
spontaneous changes like this constantly change the storyline to make it more interesting for the
viewer. Johnson mentions the "Sleeper Curve" and how it is considered to "enhance our cognitive
faculties, not dumbing them down." The author displayed several examples showing the many plots
that happen throughout different shows. The more complex the show, the "Sleeper Curve" pattern
was more detailed.
In contrast,

Np Case Study
On Tuesday, ESPN had yet another pity party over Colin Kaepernick's unemployment, featuring
Josina Anderson and Ryan Clark. Anderson whined about how people were willing to give Michael
Vick a second chance while Clark attempted to point out the hypocrisy that the Giants stood by
kicker Josh Brown during his domestic violence dispute while fretting over the fans' reaction to
potentially signing Kaepernick. This is the latest of ESPN's ardent defenses of the failed NFL QB,
ranging from questioning whether Kaepernick could sue the NFL (spoiler: he can't) to staying
stunningly silent when Kaepernick compared modern day police to slave patrols. All of this is part
of ESPN's rapid fall from sports giant to a political activist organization ... Show more content on

Kaepernick is 3–16 as a starter in the last two years. As for Clark and Anderson's comments above,
the responses are simple. Vick committed a horrible crime, yet he repented, was genuinely sorry, and
has turned his life around. Not only does he now have a family dog, he returned to the NFL in 2009
and posted his best career quarterback ratings over the course of the rest of his career. Hence, he was
actually good at his job. This is the point Clark seems to miss. Josh Brown was a good kicker. Greg
Hardy was a fantastic defensive lineman, which is why the Cowboys gave him a one year deal after
he had missed 15 games the year before for domestic violence. Ray Rice still can't find a job after
being caught on tape punching his wife in an elevator, but he was also passed his prime. Meanwhile,
Bengals rookie Joe Mixon is only 21, and despite being also caught on tape punching a woman, he
was a top draft prospect who will likely start for the Bengals this next season. Teams are willing to
overlook a player's personal history if he has an ounce of value, and as seen above, Kaepernick
hasn't shown any the last two years. This is what makes ESPN's crusade so frustrating. Once the
pinnacle of sports entertainment, aspiring sports analysts like myself 6–7 years ago would give
anything to appear on the network. Now the on–air talent typically shows less sports knowledge
than your average citizen on the street. ESPN ignores their own quarterback metrics to feign outrage

Queer Representation Of All Age Media Essay
Queer Representation in All Age Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s
and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the
media I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it was
usually in hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle 's close 'friend ' each holiday) or
as something negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school).
This reflected exactly how homosexuality was portrayed in media at the time. Queer characters and
homosexuality were at best portrayed in codified, 'blink–and–you 'll–miss it ' labels and affectations,
or at worst, something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly reads comics,
watches Saturday morning cartoons and play video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of
progress that has been made in queer representation in all age media. In this paper I hope to detail
the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all age media and highlight the positive and
negative impact of media representation. Before we can look forward, we must look back at queer
representation of the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo painstakingly researched the evolution of
queer representation in cinema in his landmark book The Celluloid Closet. In both the book and its
documentary of the same name, Russo details the earliest portrayal of homosexuality in

The Cause Of Bizare's Short Stories
Florida can be a strange and scary place sometimes, and anyone who lives there understands the
truth of that statement. Bizarre stories show up on the local news every day that leave the public
questioning, "What could have possibly been the cause of that?" I can recall one of these abnormal
and somewhat surreal situations that happened not too long ago. It was later in the evening, and I
was driving down a quiet street in order to get to friend's birthday party. Out of the corner of eye, I
saw only what I could make out to be a younger man in his early twenties riding down the sidewalk
on a skateboard while wearing a purple Teletubby costume and smoking a cigarette. Because I have
been a resident of Florida my whole life, these strange situations ... Show more content on

Being a broke college student that has to go to school on a ratty old skateboard can be rough, and
anyone in a situation as miserable as his would look for a way to make some quick and easy cash to
help pay for tuition. After discovering his purple Teletubby costume from three Halloweens past, he
wrangled up a group of his friends to film an entire bootleg series of the Teletubbies. After a
dreadful week of nonstop filming, he and his buddies had re–recorded a shoddy and budgeted
version of the children's show. On his way back to the grungy apartment he had been renting for the
past month, he figured he would use the long skateboard ride home for a smoke break to relieve the
stress from a rough week of filming. Much to his surprise, the poorly made videos had millions of
views and downloads by the time he arrived at his apartment. Due to the popularity, the federal
government quickly discovered the counterfeit videos and promptly arrested the actors. A few
months later, the broke college student was released from the county jail late in the evening. Since
he had no other clothes, there was no other choice but to wear the shameful Teletubby costume
during his lengthy skateboard ride home. Much to his relief, there was a singular cigarette in the
inside pocket of the costume, which he happily smoked all the while

Tinky Winwell Rhetorical Analysis
Zumwalt exploits a sardonic tone in order to demolish Farewell´s credibility and spoof his defective
reasoning. Utilizing rhetorical questions and litany of children´s characters – she proves that the
television show ¨Teletubbies¨, despite Farewells commentary, does not encourage children to
become gay. If anything, children are most influenced by their family and their actions.
The litany of children idols embedded in the satirical argument against Falwell jeopardizes his
credibility as a televangelist. He claims that Tinky Winky (from ¨Teletubbies¨), tends to trespass into
the female sphere too often – causing children who watch it to become gay. Tinky Winky is a
character that is ¨purple¨, vacuums, gardens, and is often caught ¨carrying a purse¨. Additionally, the
famous children's character has a triangle on top of its head and a rainbow television in place of the
stomach – both representing gay pride. Moreover, none of the ¨Teletubbies¨ characters are assigned
genders. Falwell assumed that Tinky Winky was a male; when ¨he(she?)¨ might be a female. By
implementing a rhetorical question of the fictional character sexuality, Zumwalt is able to mock one
of the numerous defects in Falwell's accusation: Tinky Winky is a homosexual male. Allowing
Zumwalt to disprove his claim, she both logically and comedically gives several examples of
beloved children characters and picks out their flaws (physically and mentally) – all having a
negative impact on the child. For example,

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Python Challenge By Dave Barry
Dave Barry is the writer of the article about the Python Challenge encouraging people to go out and
kill pythons as competition. Throughout the article he uses many rhetorical strategies all the while,
keeping a sarcastic and sardonic tone. The author begins his article with a rhetorical question with
the intent to pull the reader's attention towards his topic. The question he asks " Would you like to
make some extra money, and at the same time run the risk of being eaten..." draws the reader's
attention out and makes them want to continue reading to find out what it is they could do to get
money but run the risk of being eaten. The tone of Dave Barry's article in the first three paragraphs
would be mostly made up of sarcasm. He says the Python ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A persuasive statement in Dave's article could be when he is explaining what the prizes are "There's
a $1,500 prize for whoever kills the most pythons, a $1,000 prize for whoever kills the longest
python...". The readers are more than likely very interested in the prize money and are going to
continue reading to find out more about the challenge. The purpose of mentioning the quote from
the commission, in paragraph seven, "Make sure your technique results in immediate loss of
consciousness and destruction of the Burmese python's brain." is to substantiate that the challenge is
supported by an actual board of important people which will encourage people to participate in the
challenge while he is actually making fun of the whole situation because they are actually inhumane
and cruel. Dave Barry's use of diction is comical, sarcastic, and full of wit. He explains the
challenge in a way that he is also wronging their cruel punishment in a comical way for the reader to
enjoy instead of reading a sad article they read a funny article but leave with just as much

Media And Technology : The Negative Effects Of Technology...
There are many different arguments you could make on whether having so much media and
technology is more negative or more positive. In our society today, everything we do is based off of
technology: we post everything we do, stay in touch with people over social sites and base our lives
around the technology we have. Personally, my family and I just went on vacation and with
everything we did we had to take pictures. And with these pictures, my dad posted them on
Facebook, a social media site where he can share these pictures with all his friends. Without both
social media and technology, no one would know what to do with their lives. This is what keeps us
feeling connected but this is not a good thing. These technology based activities are overrunning our
lives. The society finds it easier and prefers to talk over text than face to face. Despite how much
technology influences our daily lives, overall it has a negative impact and influence on both
teenagers and kids in a plethora of different ways. Technology is most harmful to kids, who spend
numerous amount of time on different devices. Whether it's their own Ipad, their parent's phone or
sitting and watching TV, it all has the same negative effect on children's brains. More specifically
technology has a worse effect on infant's brains who has had no chance to develop and whose brains
are easily influenced. As Christakis recalls, "The more TV children watched as infants, the more
likely they were to have attentional

Who Is William Faulkner's Words: Is It True Or...
I have always thought of people and their personalities as a combination of their past experiences
and how they handled it. Two identical individuals may go through the exact same life but have
drastically different viewpoints on it. As a result, I think William Faulkner's words are not only true
but are integral to the human condition. Even subconsciously, people remember the things that
happen in their past and make their decisions in the present as a result. When I was growing up, I
was always fascinated by music. My mother used to tell me how, as a child, I would babble on with
the theme songs of my favorite shows at the time–which mainly consisted of the Teletubbies and
Blue Clues. Growing older, I focused more on Disney stories and the songs ... Show more content

The music fades into the background of monotony that comes with adult responsibilities. You are
meant to learn that princesses aren't real and that not all happy ever afters happen. However, I don't
think that's necessarily true. I think, no matter how much people try, they cannot push down that
wonder that stemmed from childhood. Even the most serious of individuals have a passion to them,
whether it be in the science, the arts, or otherwise. While being an adult might mean no longer
parading around a room in a dress or pretending you are Peter Pan fighting off the codfish Captain
Hook, it doesn't mean that you have to forget that imagination. People may argue that my past is that
of a musician, that if I believe the past never dies, I would dedicating my heart and soul to music
just as I did as a child. The past not dying does not mean that it has to become your sole being,
however. The past and its influences do not even have to be an integral part to one's being. The past
simply shapes that person. I had discovered my passion for music far earlier than I discovered my
passion for law, but that does not undermine either one of these

Television : The Negative Effects On Child Development
The foremost developmental task for babies and toddlers is learning to communicate. Language
development is quite dynamic. Watching Television form early age has both positive and negative
effects on child development. Television has produced great changes to the way many children
spend their time. While some of these changes have been advantageous, other have had a damaging
effect. The effects of watching television and other media for young children are damaging to
language development. Infant exposure to television has been linked to delayed language
development and kindergarten readiness skills ( Zimmerman & Meltzoff, 2007).
Early childhood development is important for successful language acquisition. While there have
been reports that TV watching has a positive effect on the linguistic and cognitive development of
children, there have also been reports that it has a harmful effect on such cognitive abilities as
attention and reading, and it has a significant relationship with language delay (Byeon & Hong,
2015). According to Shonkoff & Phillips (2000) "Most children, given a minimal amount of
stimulation common in everyday environments, will acquire and use basic language." Whereas
minimal environments are successful in eliciting basic language development, considerable
individual differences exist in typical language–learning circumstances that in turn, [influence] the
quantity and quality of the linguistic input children receive. (Linebarger & Walker, 2005).

On top of that approximately 80% of childhood obesity continues to adulthood, and can cause health
problems such as high blood pressure. According to California University in San Diego, Doctor
Jeffrey Schwimmer claims that those who watch TV for more than 4 hours a day are three times
more likely to have high blood pressure problems (US National Library). Watching Pororo can also
result in children's low participation in social activities. It is said that social skills are learned at
early age. However TV is a one–way communication system, so children can not learn the necessary
communication skills to make friends. They will more likely to be shy in making new friends
because they don't know how to interact with them. This will lower their self–esteem making it
much harder for them to engage in activities. According to experts, if social activities are limited,
parents are putting their own children at a disadvantage (Wade). To provide more concrete example,
an online interview from a mother indicates that her son is addicted to Pororo, and will not go
outside. The mother shows a deep concern for the kid's future. "I'm not sure how he is going to make
new friends. I am worried terribly. Whenever I try to turn Pororo off and ask him to play outside, he
says no (Moms Holic Baby

A short hallway at the back that leads you past the restrooms, a nondescript door labelled "shop",

I Hate Children 's Theater
I hate children's theater! I despise the term, and yet I love creating work for children. Calling my
practice "Children's theater" limits possibilities, as many consider this field of performance more
educational rather than holding high artistic merits, which leaves me frustrated. I am an artist, not a
schoolteacher, and have seen work for young audiences from all over the world with the highest
artistic quality; an aesthetic I strive to achieve. This perspective can be a challenge to express when I

They could be picturing the time when their school teacher casts them to play the tree in the school

In other words, I kill animals on stage–puppet animals to be exact. Parents die, no child learns a

generates interest in my practice and gives me the ability to produce the kind of shows that I want to

Talking points must adjust as I jump to the next stakeholder. I rely on an ecosystem to make theater

adhere to these values, I need an audience to buy tickets to support this work.

man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and

James believed the doll "Dipsy" was equivalent to Mado, so the use of the word 'suffocating'
suggests that he thought Mado was suffocating or trapped and the only way to help her was to give
her release through death, although it also could be hinting at the method he was going to use. Byatt
wrote that every time James went outside he took huge gulping breaths, which suggests that James
felt trapped himself and might have thought that if Mado were no longer around he would be able to
breathe again. James' visits from the "fetch" (234) ,Dido, also foreshadow Mado's death. A fetch in
folklore is an omen of death. Since Dido reminded him of his wife and what their relationship used
to be like, it makes sense that Mado's death was forthcoming. The last instance of foreshadowing is
in the final paragraph of the story, "...the Teletubbies were sitting on the end of the casket–shaped
cradles,..." (236), which, again, goes back to the symbol of the Teletubbies doll. The idea of the
Teletubbies going to beds that were shaped like coffins proposes a parallel to where Mado was
going to spend her last moments, which is emphasized by James telling Mado to "Come to
bed,...Just a rest, for a while," (236). So, are duty and love really different things? Merriam–Webster
defines duty as "something that is done as part of a job; something that must be done because it is
morally right," and love as "a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person." James' sense

The word 'mass' is used to describe Mado or her characteristics around the beginning of the story.
The word is first used in order to describe her hair, which implies a loss of her former beauty and
strength. The second time it is mentioned it is used to describe her brain as "a mass of thick plaques
and tangles of meaningless stuff" (201–202), which shows how absent she really is in their
relationship due to her dementia. She is no longer an active participant in their relationship, rather
she is just kind of there. The word 'intelligent,' or some form of it, is used throughout much of the
story. Madeleine valued and embraced her own intelligence and that of others, while Mado is not
even capable of coherent thought or speech. Mado's inability to hold even a simple conversation
with anyone only emphasizes the one–sidedness of James and Madeleine's current relationship. The
word 'intelligent' also serves as a form of irony in the story by showing the differences between
Madeleine and Mado. Madeleine was a teacher before WWII, while during and after the war she
worked in the aptly named intelligence department. Mado, on the other hand, finds enjoyment in
fantastical television shows that were created for children. Another source of irony is the fact that

However, shows like the Jerry Springer Show, aren?t or shouldn?t be watched by teenagers, because

Analysis Of ' Queer '
In the past decades, the word "queer" traversed many definitions, from a pejorative for gay to a self–
affirming umbrella term. While the word "queer" is primarily associated with "non–normative"
tendencies (Love 172), the word "uncanny...applies to everything that was intended to remain secret,
hidden away, and has come into the open" (Freud 132). Upon closer inspection of the words, queer
and uncanny, and Andrew Davenport's popular children's television show Teletubbies, we see that
the Teletubbies are the exemplary, digital manifestations of "queer, uncanny doppelgängers" (Cole).
It is 2000. Sunday morning. I am 3. I wake up, pop out of bed, and sprint down the steps. Mom is in
the kitchen cooking a hot, delicious breakfast. I glide past her and turn on the TV. Patiently waiting,
I clutch my favorite toy: my Po doll. As I squeeze her, her stomach–screen lights up. The TV lights
up too. I lift my head and see the familiar landscape of Teletubbyland, its rolling hills and warm
feelings. Mom walks over to me and sets down a plate of hot sausages, eggs, and bacon. But I
cannot see her. I only see bright, warm colors. I only see Po, emerging from the Superdome. I only
see Po's welcoming eyes.
To say the least Teletubbies is an incredibly entertaining television show. In each thirty–minute
episode, four baby–faced, asexual aliens, Po, Laa–Laa, Dipsy, and Tinky Winky, wake up to the
smiling face of a baby on the sun, come out from their Tubbytronic Superdome, and eat pink
custard.

Summary Of Linebarger And Walker's 2005 Study
Linebarger and Walker's 2005 study analyzed vocabulary and expressive language in 30 month olds
in relation to television viewing. They investigated whether linguistic input in the form of televised
broadcasts was associated with infants' and toddlers' communicative ability (Linebarger and Walker
2005). Their data was collected through parent kept logs starting when the children were 6 months
of age through to 30 months of age to determine television viewing habits and the relation to
language. The viewing logs were coded for program, content, and intended audience (Linebarger
and Walker 2005) for more reliable and informative sets of data.
Linebarger and Walker looked at relationships between television exposure and the child's

Portrayal of Women in the Media Essay
Portrayal of Women in the Media Gender is the psychological characteristics and social categories
that are created by human culture. Doing gender is the concept that humans express their gender
when they interact with one another. Messages about how a male or female is supposed to act come
from many different places. Schools, parents, and friends can influence a person. Another major
factor that influences millions of impressionable females and males is television. Not only does the
television teach each sex how to act, it also shows how one sex should expect the other sex to act. In
the current television broadcasting, stereotypical behavior goes from programming for the very
small to adult audiences. In this broadcasting range, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The male narrator explains different actions, "thus being more active, direct voice than that of a
female." In this show as well, the male is in charge of the activity. These two shows are only a small
insight into how the rest of the programming world shows girls being virtuous and motherly. In
commercials, girls are seen playing games like ‘Pretty, Pretty, Princess' and ‘Barbie'. Viewers
rarely see girls in the sandbox digging holes with construction toys such as dump trucks and packos.
Also, women are more likely to be in some sort of serious romantic relationship or married. On the
other hand the romantic status of most male characters is not known. These virtuous images not only
give little girls the wrong ideas, but little boys as well. This can lead the males to think they can't
enjoy dressing up and playing pretend. Or that if a girl is roughhousing with the boys or digging in
the dirt, she is somehow not a real girl. This can cause boys to harass a so–called ‘tom boy' or bully
other boys who are ‘sissies'. Female psyche is also damaged because little girls may think there is
something wrong with them if they want to do ‘boy' things. One study found that "viewing sex–
stereotyped commercials caused college women to emphasize homemaking in descriptions of their
long–term aspirations, whereas women who saw reversed–sex role commercials were more likely to

Queer Representation Of All Ages Media Essay
Queer Representation in All Ages Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s
and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the
media I consumed.
As someone who still regularly watches reads
comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and plays video games, it is so exciting to discover the
lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all ages media. In this paper I hope
to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all ages media and highlight the impact of
media representation. Before celebrating the strides of queer representation in all ages media, it is
important to look back at queer representation in the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo
painstakingly researched the evolution of queer representation in cinema in his landmark book The
Celluloid Closet. In both the book and the documentary based of the book, Russo details the

The Is The Method Of Human Communication
Should infants really spend their childhood time watching useless junk that wouldn't benefit them
for later on in their life? Yes they're children and it wouldn't matter as much in that moment, but still
it's not beneficial and it won't help them. They could spend their time doing something more helpful
that could actually help them later in life like interacting with another kid or talking to their parents.
As defined by Webster's Dictionary, television is a system for transmitting visual images and sound
that are reproduced on screens, and used to broadcast programs for entertainment, information, and
education. Television has been around since 1927, and is viewed by everybody around the world,
including children. It is one of the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But on the other hand if you were to let your child interact with another kid instead of letting them
sit and watch TV they are more likely to be better off in life. For example, if you leave your child
sitting in front of the TV watching Teletubbies they are less likely to be on the same level other kids
are on because they don't just "sit there" and watch TV all day. The more time infants spend sitting
in front of the TV, the harder it will be for them to learn how to communicate. With that being said
TV is only a medium for transmitting data, nothing more nothing less.
It's important to teach kids during the childhood phase how to be social and to learn social skills and
how to talk and interact with one another–– all the things a child can't learn/do if all they do is sit in
front of a TV all day. If a child is not raised to know how to socialize with other people, where do
you think they're going to end up? A child needs to know how to talk to other human beings, not just
to Dora on the TV. Research has shown that kids that watch a lot of television growing up tend to
have a hard time paying attention in class or just staying concentrated. A child is more likely to
watch cartoons as soon as they get home and lie about "not getting homework" instead of actually
doing it. Don't misunderstand, watching TV is a really helpful tool if used right. It's a known fact
that children spend more time

Marketing to Children
Kaitlin Schultz
April 20, 2005
Prof. Kovach
Response Paper
Marketing Children
Child obesity is a growing problem in today 's society. "On average 28% of girls age 6–11 are
overweight." Pediatricians are now seeing more and more children with high levels of cholesterol,
high blood pressure, and adult on–set diabetes. In 1997 American children obtained 50% of their
calories from added fat and sugar and only 1% of children 's diets resembled the recommended
proportions of the Food Pyramid.
The amount of money that is spent marketing to children is outrageous. Companies purposefully
market to the young children 's tastes in a variety of ways through package design, typefaces,
pictures, and content. Key elements for successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marketers understand that no child is too young to be targeted by television; many of these
programs are linked directly to commercial products. For example, Burger King then McDonald 's
sponsored the public television show "Teletubbies" (show for toddlers). McDonald 's distributed
toys of the four characters in their happy meals. It is estimated that advertising for children has now
reached over $1 billion. The most common advertised foods seen are not surprisingly low in
nutritional value; products such as, presweetened breakfast cereals, candy, fast food, sodas, cookies,
and chips. Its safes to say the money isn 't being spent on advertising of fruits, vegetables, bread, or
fish.
Another largely upsetting report found that food commercials stimulate "antisocial" behavior in
children. "Commercials aimed to children are overly dependent on socially negative material,
violence, conflict, and/or trickery." Food companies purposefully entice children by placing logos
on toys, games, clothing, and school supplies. They even go as far as to sponsor clubs, produce
magazines, buy time in movies, obtain celebrity endorsers, and add their logo to baby bottles. For
example, McDonald 's offers cups, toys, placemats, movie coupons, special toys, and logo labeled
items for all occasions. Some companies now sell counting books to young children that require the
purchase and use of the brand–name. Regrettably, "they teach children to count

Kid Kustomer Essay
"Kid Kustomers"
No matter where children are or what they are doing they'll always find some sort of advertisements.
It can be when their casually watching television, reading a magazine or just playing games on their
computer. Advertisements are different forms of communication whose purpose is to make their
product known to the public. Marketers aren't partial to certain people; they target anyone and every
age group, but recently there has been an upsurge of advertisements aimed towards children. In Eric
Schlosser's article, Kid Kustomers, he demonstrates how child advertising has boomed by the tactics
marketers use to get children to want and demand certain companies' products. The big boom in
child advertisement occurred in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Schlosser refers to the Joe Camel ad campaign, which used a "hip cartoon character to sell
cigarettes." A 1991 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that
nearly all of America's six–year–olds could identify Joe Camel, who was just as familiar to them as
Mickey Mouse. Interestingly enough, another study found that one–third of cigarettes illegally sold
to minors was in fact Camels. Not only do advertisers need a way to get kids to want their product,
they also need children to be able to persuade their parents into buying them that product. The
concept of children persuading other people to buy them what they want is known as the "surrogate
salesmen." James U. McNeal's, professor of marketing at Texas A&M University, classified kids
nagging tactics into seven major categories; pleading, persistent, forceful, demonstrative, sugar–
coated, threatening, and pity based appeals. Kids learn what appeal or style works best on their
parents and stick to that ploy whenever they want something. Observing children in their own
environment allows marketers to understand the minds of children. Advertisers conduct surveys,
organize focus groups, analyze children's artwork, study academic literature on child development
and even have cultural anthropologists observe children without them knowing. Marketers do all
that research so they can get a grasp on what children are most

"The Evolution of Television Show's" As television viewers, we tend to slouch in front of this
electrical box after a long day's work, many of us don't think or know about how much television
programming has changed since our parent's childhood. In "Thinking outside the Idiot Box" by
Dana Stevens and "Watching TV Makes You Smarter" by Steven Johnson, both writers give their
thoughts and opinions about how television programming has evolved over the last three decades.
These gentlemen recognize that the days of slap–stick comedy were over and replace by more
sophisticated stories. This new brand of programs have provide a step stoning for the evolution of
television to gain momentum. Although similar in many ways, Johnson and Stevens differ markedly
in their approach on this topic. On one hand, you have Dana Stevens takes a more negative
approach, devalues television programs based on how their narratives are making us dumber and
plots being buried under too much useless information causing misunderstanding about a show's
content. However, Steven Johnson takes a positive stance, promoting the way shows like 24, The
Apprentice, and The Sopranos have evolved their narrative and plots to balance out the influx of
new information being given to the audience. Regardless, television programming has become a
more complex product based on the success of better narratives and plot formatting that captures an

Now that we've gotten my earlier life out of the way, I should get to the parts that matter the most to
me. Not that my younger days don't matter to me; if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be the person I am

the preschool dollhouse or the narrated scene of Teletubbies filming rain. One of the first birthdays I
remember was at a hotel with some friends. The truth is that I didn't know half of the girls there, one
friend told me who to invite or I would be made fun of for not having friends. This person is not my

other kids of hers to play with and a shared apartment to visit. Most of the family cats were taken

suspected that the second apartment was haunted when I saw a silhouette in the window, when I was

Media Role Models and the Effect on Children
Media construct our culture, and the media we use to communicate with one another shapes our
perception of reality. Our society is centered on media, it is the most influential factor in
constructing our culture, but is it a positive culture? If we examine the effect that media has on
children, we can say that it breeds a harmful culture, one that throws values and morals out the
window. This is because the media is profit driven and has developed its own code of ethics of
"anything–goes". As a result, children are exposed to things that they should not necessarily be
exposed to yet and as a result it rushes their mental development and in fact moulds their mentality.
This is a scary fact because these children's minds are susceptible ... Show more content on

Another example we could look at is Britney Spears, young girls who like Britney Spears think that
she is ‘cool' and thus they strive to be just like her, and this involves acting like Britney and more
importantly buying Britney Spears products such as her clothing. So in conclusion these media
personalities are popular among children and idolized by them because they are promoted as being
cool and for a child to be cool they must be just like them, which involves buying their products.
These media personalities are in essence products themselves that the media bodies try to sell to
children on the basis of ‘cool', and once they can be sold to the children as being cool, their entire
franchise benefits because their image can create the demand for all products with their likeness.
Now let's look at the effect that these media personalities have on children in the age group 5 and
under. We assume that children are safe watching educational programming such as "Blue's Clues",
"Dora the explorer" and "Teletubbies", but are they really as safe as we think they are. First off,
these types of television shows are educational and do in fact teach young children while keeping
them entertained. This can be seen as a positive influence on our kids and these characters as being

Death By Scrabble Irony
There are three types of irony. "Death by Scrabble" is an ironic story by Charlie Fish. The characters
in this story are not named, but readers get to know the 42 years old man and his wife. Within the

verbal, situational, and dramatic irony.
In the story "Death by Scrabble" uses verbal irony a lot. For instants when the man says "If only I
had a D, then I could play MURDER. That would be a sign. That would be permission." He doesn't
really want her dead he just doesn't want to play scrabble. Or when he says "The steam rising from
her cup of tea makes me feel hotter. I try to make murderous words with the letters on my rack, but
the best I can do is SLEEP." "My wife sleeps all the time. She slept through an argument our next–
door neighbors had that resulted in a broken door, a smashed TV and a Teletubby Lala doll with all
the stuffing coming out. And then she bitched at me for being moody the next day from lack of
sleep." She doesn't sleep all the time she just is a heavy sleeper. She clearly doesn't sleep all the time
because she is playing scrabble. The verbal irony leads to the situational irony. ... Show more

My Personal Experience : My Experience In Early School
"Put on your clothes so we can get to school," my mother said as she was putting my brand new

excitement contained within me, I rushed to put on my white polo and khaki pants. I grabbed onto

because I did not understand the teacher's directions, but it was mostly because I was scared of what
these random people I had just met were going to do to me. At recess, I would just sit on the bench
on the opposite side of my teacher as the other kids would happily run around on the playground,

Analysis Of The Book ' A New Baby '
On a brisk, fall day on Sunday October 25th, 1998 a new baby was born at 7:34 p.m. at Sioux Valley
Hospital in Sioux Falls. That 20 inch, 7 pound, 9 ounce baby was Nicholas Jack Nagel. There are
two reasons for the name my parents gave me. My father Travis is a big golf fan and his favorite
golfer of all time is Jack Nicklaus; he is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time, with 18
majors, the most ever by a professional golfer. My mother Marylou, on the other hand, loves
Christmas and liked the name Nicholas due to St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of
children and sailors. The name Nicholas is a Greek name that means "victorious people."
Shockingly, it took only a few hours of labor for my arrival. My mom was as calm as can be and
didn't realize that she was going into labor. While my mom was in labor, the rest of my family

Children Watching Television All Day
The goal of this paper is to discuss the advantage and disadvantage of young children watching
television all day. Is it good for children to watch television all day? For some families television
has a positive effect on their young children. For example, parents believes their children are smart
due to watching television, however, they don't take into account that watching television also has
its' disadvantage. Yes, children may learn to say words they hear on the television, but they will not
know how to socialize with other children their age. For example, my grandson, his name is Azazel

Regrettably, he doesn't know how to play with his peers. As well as, he doesn't know how to share,

Role of Children's Television in the Global Marketplace...
Abstract
It was not long ago that there was wide agreement among broadcasters, scholars, educators and
parents concerning the ultimate goal of children's television programming: to educate. Today, it
would be difficult to find even two people to agree on such terms. Popular opinion would lead us to
believe that broadcasters now seek to exploit the youngest members of their audience––turning them
into life–long viewers (and consumers). Scholars and educators woefully condemn television for the
"dumbing down" of America. Parents, no longer present during all television viewing hours, may
not even be aware of what their children are watching. When we add an international perspective
into the mix, we inevitably invite phrases such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first (and most common) is "Open Sesame." In this format, the opening and closing segments of
the show are made locally, but the rest of the program is compiled from material produced by the
United States and leased to the foreign country.2 The second method (and the one most commonly
touted by CTW ambassadors) is co–production. In this method, foreign nations play a larger role in
the compilation of footage for the show: some is produced locally, some is from the United States.
As of 1988, there were 15 co–productions worldwide, and that number has remained quite constant
since that time.3 The U.S. version uses little, if any, foreign material.4
CTW remains a not–for–profit U.S. corporation with a 1994 operations reserve fund of $34 million
and an endowment of $71 million.5. Foreign "franchisers" of "Sesame Street" are restricted by an
agreement with CTW that does not permit the program to be aired with commercials. All profit
comes, in turn, from toy sales and is immediately turned over and utilized by the extensive research–
design system that is unique to CTW and "Sesame Street."6
It is, in fact, the CTW research system that has drawn the most criticism from the global front. The
system implements two types of testing: formative and summative. Formative tests are those

Think piece #1 Teletubbies has been a successful children's show. This show has been attracted to
children since its release date. Parents seem to think the contrary. It has lately been labeled as
"weird" and "non–productive." The show consists of Tinky winky, Laa–Laa, Dipsy and Po. These
creatures resembled some type of aliens in a suit who live in an abnormal world composed of non–
existent technology. This show seems to be the show that started the revolution to commercialization
in public television. Leaving aside the negative effects of children's television, TV learning is not a
new activity. Parents have busy lives, which makes it more and more tempting to let their children

A child's developmental stages are something that parents around the world can relate to. Knowing
the different stages and how the stages represent themselves is key to understanding a child's
behavior. Piaget's Theory of Cognitive development encompasses 4 stages. They are the
sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and the formal operational. Since the first and
last stages are for people outside the scope of what is being defined, they will not be included. There
are many differences between children at different stages, such as a 3 and a 9 year old whom would
be in the middle two stages: preoperational and concrete operational. A 3 year old is in the second
stage of Piaget's cognitive development theory. This stage is the

Watching Tv Makes You Smarter, By Steven Johnson

  • 1. Watching Tv Makes You Smarter, By Steven Johnson In the article "Watching TV Makes You Smarter," Steven Johnson argues why and how television can make you smarter. In another article, "Thinking Outside the Idiot Box," Dana Stevens contradicts everything Steven Johnson said in his article about television making people more intelligent. Steven Johnson 's argument is that television can actually make you smarter because when you watch a show, you are trying to understand everything that is happening. Today's shows have a lot of action and scenes trying to keep people's attention. Therefore, people carefully tune in to television shows trying to understand everything that goes on during the show. Johnson said, "You have to pay attention, make inferences, and track shifting social relationships." For instance, depending on how the characters interact with one another, changes happen as the plot of the story continues on. An example of this is if a character happens to disagree with another character and an enemy of both characters comes into the mix, and those two characters join forces to defeat their enemy. The spontaneous changes like this constantly change the storyline to make it more interesting for the viewer. Johnson mentions the "Sleeper Curve" and how it is considered to "enhance our cognitive faculties, not dumbing them down." The author displayed several examples showing the many plots that happen throughout different shows. The more complex the show, the "Sleeper Curve" pattern was more detailed. In contrast, ... • 3. Np Case Study On Tuesday, ESPN had yet another pity party over Colin Kaepernick's unemployment, featuring Josina Anderson and Ryan Clark. Anderson whined about how people were willing to give Michael Vick a second chance while Clark attempted to point out the hypocrisy that the Giants stood by kicker Josh Brown during his domestic violence dispute while fretting over the fans' reaction to potentially signing Kaepernick. This is the latest of ESPN's ardent defenses of the failed NFL QB, ranging from questioning whether Kaepernick could sue the NFL (spoiler: he can't) to staying stunningly silent when Kaepernick compared modern day police to slave patrols. All of this is part of ESPN's rapid fall from sports giant to a political activist organization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kaepernick is 3–16 as a starter in the last two years. As for Clark and Anderson's comments above, the responses are simple. Vick committed a horrible crime, yet he repented, was genuinely sorry, and has turned his life around. Not only does he now have a family dog, he returned to the NFL in 2009 and posted his best career quarterback ratings over the course of the rest of his career. Hence, he was actually good at his job. This is the point Clark seems to miss. Josh Brown was a good kicker. Greg Hardy was a fantastic defensive lineman, which is why the Cowboys gave him a one year deal after he had missed 15 games the year before for domestic violence. Ray Rice still can't find a job after being caught on tape punching his wife in an elevator, but he was also passed his prime. Meanwhile, Bengals rookie Joe Mixon is only 21, and despite being also caught on tape punching a woman, he was a top draft prospect who will likely start for the Bengals this next season. Teams are willing to overlook a player's personal history if he has an ounce of value, and as seen above, Kaepernick hasn't shown any the last two years. This is what makes ESPN's crusade so frustrating. Once the pinnacle of sports entertainment, aspiring sports analysts like myself 6–7 years ago would give anything to appear on the network. Now the on–air talent typically shows less sports knowledge than your average citizen on the street. ESPN ignores their own quarterback metrics to feign outrage over a ... • 5. Queer Representation Of All Age Media Essay Queer Representation in All Age Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it was usually in hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle 's close 'friend ' each holiday) or as something negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school). This reflected exactly how homosexuality was portrayed in media at the time. Queer characters and homosexuality were at best portrayed in codified, 'blink–and–you 'll–miss it ' labels and affectations, or at worst, something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly reads comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and play video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all age media. In this paper I hope to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all age media and highlight the positive and negative impact of media representation. Before we can look forward, we must look back at queer representation of the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo painstakingly researched the evolution of queer representation in cinema in his landmark book The Celluloid Closet. In both the book and its documentary of the same name, Russo details the earliest portrayal of homosexuality in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Cause Of Bizare's Short Stories Florida can be a strange and scary place sometimes, and anyone who lives there understands the truth of that statement. Bizarre stories show up on the local news every day that leave the public questioning, "What could have possibly been the cause of that?" I can recall one of these abnormal and somewhat surreal situations that happened not too long ago. It was later in the evening, and I was driving down a quiet street in order to get to friend's birthday party. Out of the corner of eye, I saw only what I could make out to be a younger man in his early twenties riding down the sidewalk on a skateboard while wearing a purple Teletubby costume and smoking a cigarette. Because I have been a resident of Florida my whole life, these strange situations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being a broke college student that has to go to school on a ratty old skateboard can be rough, and anyone in a situation as miserable as his would look for a way to make some quick and easy cash to help pay for tuition. After discovering his purple Teletubby costume from three Halloweens past, he wrangled up a group of his friends to film an entire bootleg series of the Teletubbies. After a dreadful week of nonstop filming, he and his buddies had re–recorded a shoddy and budgeted version of the children's show. On his way back to the grungy apartment he had been renting for the past month, he figured he would use the long skateboard ride home for a smoke break to relieve the stress from a rough week of filming. Much to his surprise, the poorly made videos had millions of views and downloads by the time he arrived at his apartment. Due to the popularity, the federal government quickly discovered the counterfeit videos and promptly arrested the actors. A few months later, the broke college student was released from the county jail late in the evening. Since he had no other clothes, there was no other choice but to wear the shameful Teletubby costume during his lengthy skateboard ride home. Much to his relief, there was a singular cigarette in the inside pocket of the costume, which he happily smoked all the while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Tinky Winwell Rhetorical Analysis Zumwalt exploits a sardonic tone in order to demolish Farewell´s credibility and spoof his defective reasoning. Utilizing rhetorical questions and litany of children´s characters – she proves that the television show ¨Teletubbies¨, despite Farewells commentary, does not encourage children to become gay. If anything, children are most influenced by their family and their actions. The litany of children idols embedded in the satirical argument against Falwell jeopardizes his credibility as a televangelist. He claims that Tinky Winky (from ¨Teletubbies¨), tends to trespass into the female sphere too often – causing children who watch it to become gay. Tinky Winky is a character that is ¨purple¨, vacuums, gardens, and is often caught ¨carrying a purse¨. Additionally, the famous children's character has a triangle on top of its head and a rainbow television in place of the stomach – both representing gay pride. Moreover, none of the ¨Teletubbies¨ characters are assigned genders. Falwell assumed that Tinky Winky was a male; when ¨he(she?)¨ might be a female. By implementing a rhetorical question of the fictional character sexuality, Zumwalt is able to mock one of the numerous defects in Falwell's accusation: Tinky Winky is a homosexual male. Allowing Zumwalt to disprove his claim, she both logically and comedically gives several examples of beloved children characters and picks out their flaws (physically and mentally) – all having a negative impact on the child. • 11. A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Python Challenge By Dave Barry Dave Barry is the writer of the article about the Python Challenge encouraging people to go out and kill pythons as competition. Throughout the article he uses many rhetorical strategies all the while, keeping a sarcastic and sardonic tone. The author begins his article with a rhetorical question with the intent to pull the reader's attention towards his topic. The question he asks " Would you like to make some extra money, and at the same time run the risk of being eaten..." draws the reader's attention out and makes them want to continue reading to find out what it is they could do to get money but run the risk of being eaten. A persuasive statement in Dave's article could be when he is explaining what the prizes are "There's a $1,500 prize for whoever kills the most pythons, a $1,000 prize for whoever kills the longest python...". The readers are more than likely very interested in the prize money and are going to continue reading to find out more about the challenge. The purpose of mentioning the quote from the commission, in paragraph seven, "Make sure your technique results in immediate loss of consciousness and destruction of the Burmese python's brain." is to substantiate that the challenge is supported by an actual board of important people which will encourage people to participate in the challenge while he is actually making fun of the whole situation because they are actually inhumane and cruel. Dave Barry's use of diction is comical, sarcastic, and full of wit. He explains the challenge in a way that he is also wronging their cruel punishment in a comical way for the reader to enjoy instead of reading a sad article they read a funny article but leave with just as much information about killing the python as they would have reading a sad ... • 13. Media And Technology : The Negative Effects Of Technology... There are many different arguments you could make on whether having so much media and technology is more negative or more positive. In our society today, everything we do is based off of technology: we post everything we do, stay in touch with people over social sites and base our lives around the technology we have. Personally, my family and I just went on vacation and with everything we did we had to take pictures. And with these pictures, my dad posted them on Facebook, a social media site where he can share these pictures with all his friends. Without both social media and technology, no one would know what to do with their lives. This is what keeps us feeling connected but this is not a good thing. These technology based activities are overrunning our lives. The society finds it easier and prefers to talk over text than face to face. Despite how much technology influences our daily lives, overall it has a negative impact and influence on both teenagers and kids in a plethora of different ways. Technology is most harmful to kids, who spend numerous amount of time on different devices. Whether it's their own Ipad, their parent's phone or sitting and watching TV, it all has the same negative effect on children's brains. More specifically technology has a worse effect on infant's brains who has had no chance to develop and whose brains are easily influenced. As Christakis recalls, "The more TV children watched as infants, the more likely they were to have attentional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Who Is William Faulkner's Words: Is It True Or... I have always thought of people and their personalities as a combination of their past experiences and how they handled it. Two identical individuals may go through the exact same life but have drastically different viewpoints on it. As a result, I think William Faulkner's words are not only true but are integral to the human condition. Even subconsciously, people remember the things that happen in their past and make their decisions in the present as a result. When I was growing up, I was always fascinated by music. My mother used to tell me how, as a child, I would babble on with the theme songs of my favorite shows at the time–which mainly consisted of the Teletubbies and Blue Clues. Growing older, I focused more on Disney stories and the songs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The music fades into the background of monotony that comes with adult responsibilities. You are meant to learn that princesses aren't real and that not all happy ever afters happen. However, I don't think that's necessarily true. I think, no matter how much people try, they cannot push down that wonder that stemmed from childhood. Even the most serious of individuals have a passion to them, whether it be in the science, the arts, or otherwise. While being an adult might mean no longer parading around a room in a dress or pretending you are Peter Pan fighting off the codfish Captain Hook, it doesn't mean that you have to forget that imagination. People may argue that my past is that of a musician, that if I believe the past never dies, I would dedicating my heart and soul to music just as I did as a child. The past not dying does not mean that it has to become your sole being, however. The past and its influences do not even have to be an integral part to one's being. • 17. Television : The Negative Effects On Child Development The foremost developmental task for babies and toddlers is learning to communicate. Language development is quite dynamic. Watching Television form early age has both positive and negative effects on child development. Television has produced great changes to the way many children spend their time. While some of these changes have been advantageous, other have had a damaging effect. The effects of watching television and other media for young children are damaging to language development. Infant exposure to television has been linked to delayed language development and kindergarten readiness skills ( Zimmerman & Meltzoff, 2007). Early childhood development is important for successful language acquisition. While there have been reports that TV watching has a positive effect on the linguistic and cognitive development of children, there have also been reports that it has a harmful effect on such cognitive abilities as attention and reading, and it has a significant relationship with language delay (Byeon & Hong, 2015). According to Shonkoff & Phillips (2000) "Most children, given a minimal amount of stimulation common in everyday environments, will acquire and use basic language." Whereas minimal environments are successful in eliciting basic language development, considerable individual differences exist in typical language–learning circumstances that in turn, [influence] the quantity and quality of the linguistic input children receive. In South Korea, there is an ongoing Pororo boom among children. 'Porong Porong Pororo' is an original Korean animation series that is about the adventures of Pororo and his friends in the North Pole (Appendix 1). People call this penguin character as 'Potongreung' which means 'President Pororo' in Korean, as it is like the president among children. As this nickname represents, kids love this animation so much but this popularity is a huge problem because it has gotten to the point where no one questions its educational values. On top of that approximately 80% of childhood obesity continues to adulthood, and can cause health problems such as high blood pressure. According to California University in San Diego, Doctor Jeffrey Schwimmer claims that those who watch TV for more than 4 hours a day are three times more likely to have high blood pressure problems (US National Library). Watching Pororo can also result in children's low participation in social activities. It is said that social skills are learned at early age. However TV is a one–way communication system, so children can not learn the necessary communication skills to make friends. They will more likely to be shy in making new friends because they don't know how to interact with them. This will lower their self–esteem making it much harder for them to engage in activities. According to experts, if social activities are limited, parents are putting their own children at a disadvantage (Wade). To provide more concrete example, an online interview from a mother indicates that her son is addicted to Pororo, and will not go outside. The mother shows a deep concern for the kid's future. "I'm not sure how he is going to make new friends. I am worried terribly. Whenever I try to turn Pororo off and ask him to play outside, he says no (Moms Holic Baby 3 Café)." • 27. Watching Tv Makes You Smarter, By Steven Johnson Television is a great source of knowledge and it interests many people. Some people have the same belief while others do not for many different reasons. In the first article "Watching TV Makes You Smarter," Steven Johnson argues why and how television can make you smarter. Johnson mentions the "Sleeper Curve" and how it is considered to "enhance our cognitive faculties, not dumbing them down." The author displayed several ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Calling my practice "Children's theater" limits possibilities, as many consider this field of performance more educational rather than holding high artistic merits, which leaves me frustrated. Byatt's story "The Pink Ribbon" is a story about change in a marriage as a result of a traumatic experience, as well as how the struggle between duty and love manifests themselves. In this story, a man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and resentment after his transition from spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters with a beautiful young woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have meaningful contact with another person that is not consumed by taking care of someone else, which causes him to make a choice in the name of mercy, both for himself and his wife. James believed the doll "Dipsy" was equivalent to Mado, so the use of the word 'suffocating' suggests that he thought Mado was suffocating or trapped and the only way to help her was to give her release through death, although it also could be hinting at the method he was going to use. Byatt wrote that every time James went outside he took huge gulping breaths, which suggests that James felt trapped himself and might have thought that if Mado were no longer around he would be able to breathe again. James' visits from the "fetch" (234) ,Dido, also foreshadow Mado's death. A fetch in folklore is an omen of death. Since Dido reminded him of his wife and what their relationship used to be like, it makes sense that Mado's death was forthcoming. The last instance of foreshadowing is in the final paragraph of the story, "...the Teletubbies were sitting on the end of the casket–shaped cradles,..." (236), which, again, goes back to the symbol of the Teletubbies doll. The idea of the Teletubbies going to beds that were shaped like coffins proposes a parallel to where Mado was going to spend her last moments, which is emphasized by James telling Mado to "Come to bed,...Just a rest, for a while," (236). So, are duty and love really different things? Merriam–Webster defines duty as "something that is done as part of a job; something that must be done because it is morally right," and love as "a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person." The word is first used in order to describe her hair, which implies a loss of her former beauty and strength. The second time it is mentioned it is used to describe her brain as "a mass of thick plaques and tangles of meaningless stuff" (201–202), which shows how absent she really is in their relationship due to her dementia. She is no longer an active participant in their relationship, rather she is just kind of there. The word 'intelligent,' or some form of it, is used throughout much of the story. Madeleine valued and embraced her own intelligence and that of others, while Mado is not even capable of coherent thought or speech. Mado's inability to hold even a simple conversation with anyone only emphasizes the one–sidedness of James and Madeleine's current relationship. The word 'intelligent' also serves as a form of irony in the story by showing the differences between Madeleine and Mado. While the word "queer" is primarily associated with "non–normative" tendencies (Love 172), the word "uncanny...applies to everything that was intended to remain secret, hidden away, and has come into the open" (Freud 132). Upon closer inspection of the words, queer and uncanny, and Andrew Davenport's popular children's television show Teletubbies, we see that the Teletubbies are the exemplary, digital manifestations of "queer, uncanny doppelgängers" (Cole). It is 2000. Sunday morning. I am 3. I wake up, pop out of bed, and sprint down the steps. Mom is in the kitchen cooking a hot, delicious breakfast. I glide past her and turn on the TV. Patiently waiting, I clutch my favorite toy: my Po doll. As I squeeze her, her stomach–screen lights up. The TV lights up too. Doing gender is the concept that humans express their gender when they interact with one another. Messages about how a male or female is supposed to act come from many different places. Schools, parents, and friends can influence a person. Another major factor that influences millions of impressionable females and males is television. In commercials, girls are seen playing games like ‘Pretty, Pretty, Princess' and ‘Barbie'. Viewers rarely see girls in the sandbox digging holes with construction toys such as dump trucks and packos. Also, women are more likely to be in some sort of serious romantic relationship or married. On the other hand the romantic status of most male characters is not known. These virtuous images not only give little girls the wrong ideas, but little boys as well. This can lead the males to think they can't enjoy dressing up and playing pretend. Or that if a girl is roughhousing with the boys or digging in the dirt, she is somehow not a real girl. This can cause boys to harass a so–called ‘tom boy' or bully other boys who are ‘sissies'. Female psyche is also damaged because little girls may think there is something wrong with them if they want to do ‘boy' things. • 45. Queer Representation Of All Ages Media Essay Queer Representation in All Ages Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media I consumed. As someone who still regularly watches reads comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and plays video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all ages media. In this paper I hope to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all ages media and highlight the impact of media representation. Before celebrating the strides of queer representation in all ages media, it is important to look back at queer representation in the past. Yes they're children and it wouldn't matter as much in that moment, but still it's not beneficial and it won't help them. They could spend their time doing something more helpful that could actually help them later in life like interacting with another kid or talking to their parents. As defined by Webster's Dictionary, television is a system for transmitting visual images and sound that are reproduced on screens, and used to broadcast programs for entertainment, information, and education. But on the other hand if you were to let your child interact with another kid instead of letting them sit and watch TV they are more likely to be better off in life. For example, if you leave your child sitting in front of the TV watching Teletubbies they are less likely to be on the same level other kids are on because they don't just "sit there" and watch TV all day. The more time infants spend sitting in front of the TV, the harder it will be for them to learn how to communicate. With that being said TV is only a medium for transmitting data, nothing more nothing less. It's important to teach kids during the childhood phase how to be social and to learn social skills and how to talk and interact with one another–– all the things a child can't learn/do if all they do is sit in front of a TV all day. If a child is not raised to know how to socialize with other people, where do you think they're going to end up? A child needs to know how to talk to other human beings, not just to Dora on the TV. Research has shown that kids that watch a lot of television growing up tend to have a hard time paying attention in class or just staying concentrated. A child is more likely to watch cartoons as soon as they get home and lie about "not getting homework" instead of actually doing it. Interestingly enough, another study found that one–third of cigarettes illegally sold to minors was in fact Camels. The concept of children persuading other people to buy them what they want is known as the "surrogate salesmen." James U. The truth is that I didn't know half of the girls there, one friend told me who to invite or I would be made fun of for not having friends. This person is not my friend anymore. I forgot how old I was for this birthday. I don't remember most of my ages, just the events themselves. I've noticed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After years of being tossed around, being introduced to people I didn't know, staying the night in houses I'd never been in, and constantly watching my dad getting into intense arguments with other people, I grew to hate staying with my dad. After he started dating my stepmother, I was around two other kids of hers to play with and a shared apartment to visit. Most of the family cats were taken away which also made me cry. I'm starting to realize why I can't remember most of my childhood. I repress everything I'm embarrassed or ashamed of until I forget about it. Well, that got sad. Back to some happier memories! Most of these more upsetting memories occurred when I lived with my grandmother. When I was about seven, I moved to the town part of Wauseon, the house I live in now. Being in an apartment was very new to me after living in the country for most of my life. The neighbors upstairs were always changing. There would be a month of complete silence until we managed to catch them outside while taking out the trash. For a couple of my younger years, I suspected that the second apartment was haunted when I saw a silhouette in the window, when I was sure the old neighbors had moved out. After taking time to ... • 57. Media Role Models and the Effect on Children Media construct our culture, and the media we use to communicate with one another shapes our perception of reality. Our society is centered on media, it is the most influential factor in constructing our culture, but is it a positive culture? If we examine the effect that media has on children, we can say that it breeds a harmful culture, one that throws values and morals out the window. This is because the media is profit driven and has developed its own code of ethics of "anything–goes". As a result, children are exposed to things that they should not necessarily be exposed to yet and as a result it rushes their mental development and in fact moulds their mentality. This is a scary fact because these children's minds are susceptible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another example we could look at is Britney Spears, young girls who like Britney Spears think that she is ‘cool' and thus they strive to be just like her, and this involves acting like Britney and more importantly buying Britney Spears products such as her clothing. So in conclusion these media personalities are popular among children and idolized by them because they are promoted as being cool and for a child to be cool they must be just like them, which involves buying their products. These media personalities are in essence products themselves that the media bodies try to sell to children on the basis of ‘cool', and once they can be sold to the children as being cool, their entire franchise benefits because their image can create the demand for all products with their likeness. Now let's look at the effect that these media personalities have on children in the age group 5 and under. We assume that children are safe watching educational programming such as "Blue's Clues", "Dora the explorer" and "Teletubbies", but are they really as safe as we think they are. First off, these types of television shows are educational and do in fact teach young children while keeping them entertained. This can be seen as a positive influence on our kids and these characters as being positive role ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Death By Scrabble Irony There are three types of irony. "Death by Scrabble" is an ironic story by Charlie Fish. The characters in this story are not named, but readers get to know the 42 years old man and his wife. Within the story, you learn that the couple is uneasy in their relationship. The story "Death by Scrabble" shows verbal, situational, and dramatic irony. In the story "Death by Scrabble" uses verbal irony a lot. For instants when the man says "If only I had a D, then I could play MURDER. That would be a sign. That would be permission." He doesn't really want her dead he just doesn't want to play scrabble. Or when he says "The steam rising from her cup of tea makes me feel hotter. I try to make murderous words with the letters on my rack, but the best I can do is SLEEP." "My wife sleeps all the time. She slept through an argument our next– door neighbors had that resulted in a broken door, a smashed TV and a Teletubby Lala doll with all the stuffing coming out. And then she bitched at me for being moody the next day from lack of sleep." She doesn't sleep all the time she just is a heavy sleeper. She clearly doesn't sleep all the time because she is playing scrabble. The verbal irony leads to the situational irony. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 61. My Personal Experience : My Experience In Early School "Put on your clothes so we can get to school," my mother said as she was putting my brand new school supplies in my pink Hello Kitty backpack for my first day of preschool. With so much excitement contained within me, I rushed to put on my white polo and khaki pants. I grabbed onto my mom's hand as we walked to Southwest Christian Academy, which was only a block away from where we had lived. We walked into this classroom, and I sat in a small blue chair as my mom talked to my teacher. The room was filled with people I had never seen before in my life and speaking a language that I did not understand and only heard on PBS Kids shows such as Dragon Tales and Teletubbies. Suddenly my mom just said bye and left the classroom. I was in a room filled with strangers by myself and this is where it all began. Class had started and I just sat in my little blue chair in the corner all alone without saying a single word. Whenever it was time to learn the alphabet, the students would go to the front of the classroom while I just sat back in my corner, refusing to join the rest of the class. It was partly because I did not understand the teacher's directions, but it was mostly because I was scared of what these random people I had just met were going to do to me. At recess, I would just sit on the bench on the opposite side of my teacher as the other kids would happily run around on the playground, play tag, climb the bars, and go down the long spiral slides. As the days passed, I grew ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Would you use your water bill to drain the stain like me? I sat on the couch holding a bottle of whiskey, wondering what I had down with my life. I was successful. I had something that people would kill for. Only they usually ended up killing themselves over it. Kinda like me. I obsessed with my job, it consumed my life. I didn't have a life anymore. It was taken over by my job. I knew I needed a break, but I couldn't make myself take one. I waited to long. All my feelings were bottled up inside. They just exploded. Like a grenade. I'm a fucking grenade. "Look, I'm sorry." I got up from the couch when the door opened. Gerard didn't look up. He walked to the fridge to put away some groceries, but then went to his bunk. • 65. Analysis Of The Book ' A New Baby ' On a brisk, fall day on Sunday October 25th, 1998 a new baby was born at 7:34 p.m. at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. That 20 inch, 7 pound, 9 ounce baby was Nicholas Jack Nagel. There are two reasons for the name my parents gave me. My father Travis is a big golf fan and his favorite golfer of all time is Jack Nicklaus; he is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time, with 18 majors, the most ever by a professional golfer. My mother Marylou, on the other hand, loves Christmas and liked the name Nicholas due to St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children and sailors. The name Nicholas is a Greek name that means "victorious people." Shockingly, it took only a few hours of labor for my arrival. My mom was as calm as can be and didn't realize that she was going into labor. While my mom was in labor, the rest of my family watched the Denver Broncos defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars. My parents joke with me that I've been a Broncos fan since I was even born, which is true. All of my grandparents, three aunts, and three family friends were at the hospital to greet me. After I was delivered at approximately 7:34 p.m. my family passed around some "It's a boy" cigars. There were a lot of visitors that brought gifts and outfits. My parents and I got to go home the night after I was born. Grandma and Grandpa Nagel stayed for two days. The first Republican to serve as governor of the state, he became known as the father of the Republican Party in Kentucky. After a well–received speech seconding the presidential nomination of Ulysses S. Grant at the 1880 Republican National Convention, he was nominated for governor in 1887. He lost the general election that year, but won in 1895, capitalizing on divisions in the Democratic Party over the issue of free silver. His term was marked by political struggles and violence. He advanced the status of black citizens, but was unable to enact much of his reform agenda over a hostile Democratic majority. He was elected by the state legislature to the U.S. Senate in 1907, when voting was deadlocked and the Democratic candidate, outgoing Governor J. C. W. • 69. Children Watching Television All Day The goal of this paper is to discuss the advantage and disadvantage of young children watching television all day. Is it good for children to watch television all day? For some families television has a positive effect on their young children. For example, parents believes their children are smart due to watching television, however, they don't take into account that watching television also has its' disadvantage. Yes, children may learn to say words they hear on the television, but they will not know how to socialize with other children their age. For example, my grandson, his name is Azazel and he is three years old. Unfortunately, he watches television and plays video games all day. Regrettably, he doesn't know how to play with his peers. As well as, he doesn't know how to share, or even say a full sentence when someone speaks to him. Others remember it fondly as the channel where they watch Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, Barney or the Teletubbies (their four most popular shows) as children (Stein). The fact that PBS is funded by the government, or tax payers, is a sore subject for some Americans (Stein). Some feel that the government should not be funding PBS for many reasons. Some feel as though no one actually watches public television anymore, insteading choosing to purchase cable. The reason so many people choose cable is because it has many, many more channels. • 73. Role of Children's Television in the Global Marketplace... Abstract It was not long ago that there was wide agreement among broadcasters, scholars, educators and parents concerning the ultimate goal of children's television programming: to educate. Today, it would be difficult to find even two people to agree on such terms. Popular opinion would lead us to believe that broadcasters now seek to exploit the youngest members of their audience––turning them into life–long viewers (and consumers). Scholars and educators woefully condemn television for the "dumbing down" of America. Parents, no longer present during all television viewing hours, may not even be aware of what their children are watching. When we add an international perspective into the mix, we inevitably invite phrases such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first (and most common) is "Open Sesame." In this format, the opening and closing segments of the show are made locally, but the rest of the program is compiled from material produced by the United States and leased to the foreign country.2 The second method (and the one most commonly touted by CTW ambassadors) is co–production. In this method, foreign nations play a larger role in the compilation of footage for the show: some is produced locally, some is from the United States. As of 1988, there were 15 co–productions worldwide, and that number has remained quite constant since that time.3 The U.S. version uses little, if any, foreign material.4 CTW remains a not–for–profit U.S. corporation with a 1994 operations reserve fund of $34 million and an endowment of $71 million.5. Foreign "franchisers" of "Sesame Street" are restricted by an agreement with CTW that does not permit the program to be aired with commercials. All profit comes, in turn, from toy sales and is immediately turned over and utilized by the extensive research– design system that is unique to CTW and "Sesame Street."6 It is, in fact, the CTW research system that has drawn the most criticism from the global front. The system implements two types of testing: formative and summative. Formative tests are those conducted prior to broadcast, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This show has been attracted to children since its release date. Parents seem to think the contrary. It has lately been labeled as "weird" and "non–productive." The show consists of Tinky winky, Laa–Laa, Dipsy and Po. These creatures resembled some type of aliens in a suit who live in an abnormal world composed of non– existent technology. This show seems to be the show that started the revolution to commercialization in public television. Leaving aside the negative effects of children's television, TV learning is not a new activity. Parents have busy lives, which makes it more and more tempting to let their children watch TV. Parents feel more satisfied leaving their kids with trusted television. Although children seem to favor entertainment TV, parents tend to think more positively about educational TV. PBS has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Knowing the different stages and how the stages represent themselves is key to understanding a child's behavior. Piaget's Theory of Cognitive development encompasses 4 stages. They are the sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and the formal operational. Since the first and last stages are for people outside the scope of what is being defined, they will not be included. There are many differences between children at different stages, such as a 3 and a 9 year old whom would be in the middle two stages: preoperational and concrete operational. A 3 year old is in the second stage of Piaget's cognitive development theory. This stage is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
