Essay about On Delacroix and Courbet
On Delacroix and Courbet The period surrounding 1781 to 1855 in France's history is united by
social and political change, an evolution of ideological struggles towards the best possible political
struggle amongst anchoring human faults. The life of the artist too underwent change and struggled
with the hierarchy that existed to validate artistic triumph. Changes are apparent amongst a broad
spectrum, including David, Ingres, history paintings and caricatures. Artists that demonstratively
epitomize the shifts, overwhelmingly united by a shift from acceptance to defiance, are Eugene
Delacroix (1789 – 1863) and Gustave Courbet (1819 – 1877). Artistic and cultural differences that
developed are transparent through understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Salon and its competitions dictated the motives of the artist. Delacroix's first winning painting
was Dante and Virgil in Hell (1822). This painting was indeed a success: the French believed
themselves to be a modern embodiment of the Classics, and Dante and Virgil reinforced this well
enough. The painting is deemed "a revolution in itself." The colors blend together so much that the
painting is better understood from farther away than up close. Fans triumphed it's subject matter:
"...romanticism will not consist in a perfect execution, but in a conception analogous to the ethical
disposition of the age." This painting, after the Divine Comedy, also embeds Delacroix in the
literary movement. This movement was vital to the overall organization of history painting, as a
sharp literary vocabulary of the painter was admired if not necessary. "Delacroix has a fondness for
Dante and Shakespeare, two other great painters of human anguish." Delacroix concerned himself
with grand, tortured ideas. This literary fascination – of Shakespeare, Bryon, Sir Walter Scott, etc. –
can be seen as a departure from the classics into modernity even though it served as good grounding
for him. The way of Delacroix is a distinct, unique flair.
Although Delacroix was the youngest artist with works in the Louvre, his antagonistic paintings
would begin to receive more demanding criticism. Gros described one of his works as "the massacre
of the painting." He depicted many scenes on

Research Paper On The Divine Comedy
Divine Comedy The Divine Comedy is a lengthy poem composed by a considerable Italian poet that
worked primarily in the late middle ages. Composed by Dante Alighieri, who was a political thinker,
writer, and poet who is remembered mostly for composing The Divine Comedy, which made a
lasting impact on theology, as well as literature. Many consider Dante a genius when it came to
literature, a wise man full of knowledge. He was born in Florence, Italy and lived from 1265 to
1321. Many believe Dante studied tuscan poetry while in school but it is not known where and when
he went to school. He is remembered as a very influential writer who used Italian language rather
than Latin. He was born into a family that was supposedly involved deeply with the Florentine
political scene which was a large influence on him and his ideals which is evident throughout his
works. Dante's mother had died when Dante was very young. At just 12 years old, Dante had his
marriage arranged with a woman who was a family friend named Gemma Donati. The couple got
married sometime around 1285, but there was just one problem. Dante had proceeded to fall in love
with another woman– Beatrice Portinari, who would become a huge significance to his life and
especially his work, she was very influential to him. Dante later went on and composed The New
Life (La Vita Nuovo) using Beatrice as an ideal. After the unexpected death of Beatrice, Dante
became quite intrigued in studying philosophy and the tactics and

Why Is Humanities Important?
There are many reasons that humanities is taught. Humanities play its largest role in culture, and our
understanding of it. There are certain things that it 's believed people will be better off for knowing.
A lot of great works of literature fall into that category. The biggest ones are especially important
because they haven 't stopped coming up. These works are continuously referenced. Another reason
that humanities is taught is because it helps people express themselves better, and have a broader
base from which to do so. If most of us have read and memorized the punishments in the Inferno
than most people would understand. But the basic idea is that by studying humanities we 'll
communicate and understand each other better. And while memorizing these infernal punishments
may seem tedious, if looked at pragmatically it 's really not that difficult. The punishments are
poetic, and usually make some degree of sense for the crime.. I have a similar issue with Math and
Life Science courses. It's complicated when the cell structures won 't affect my daily life at all. It has
to do with the way we process the world. What 's useless to you is very important to me, and maybe
the opposite is true as well. And that 's reason enough for both of us to at least try to suffer through
our tortures with a smile and positive outlook for a better outcome in the day. Because just a little
understanding of what 's important to each other will make life better for both of us, and will help

Themes In Dante Alighieri's Make Florence Great Again
Make Florence Great Again
Dante Alighieri lived during a time of various warring political sides and became strongly involved
in politics as much as his education and writing. He was then exiled by the unstable political climate
but remained determined to contribute to Florence's well being through his writing of the epic poem,
The Inferno, attempting to cleanse corrupt figures, who he believed contributed no positive aspects
to Florence, by putting them in certain places of his Hell. He creates a protagonist, modeled off
himself to do this and throughout the poem Dante, the protagonist, shows hostility towards sinners
who contradicted his political stance such as the wrathful Filippo Argenti through diction. However,
Alighieri seems to show sympathetic feelings towards the heretic Farinata Degli Uberti through
diction and imagery, but he was on an opposing political side of Dante, yet Dante seems to overlook
his opposing ideas and sin because the sinner states his good will towards Florence. Finally, another
important sinner, Sodomite Ser Brunetto Latino, is shown compassion through Dante's interactions
and the author's diction, which suggests that Dante Alighieri seems to only respect sinners who tried
to protect or create a prosperous Florence, which is why he overlooks their political stance and/or
sins.
Alighieri reveals his first resentful feelings towards sinners of opposite political sides whom, he
believes, had no intention to contribute to the development of his

Analysis Of A Series Of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning
In life, you have watch out for greedy people. The story A Series of Unfortunate Events The Bad
Beginning Lemony Snicket uses characterization, mood, and to tell how the three Baudelaire's don't
get tricked by Count Olaf's greedy plan to get money.
To start off, Lemony Snicket uses characterization to explain how the characters look. For example
on page 2–3 "Violet Baudelaire, the eldest, fourteen years old, Klaus Baudelaire, the middle child
and only boy, he was intelligent being only twelve, Sunny Baudelaire, the youngest, liked to bite
things She was an infant and very small for her age." This shows the direct characterization of the

Dante 's Paradise Lost, And Homer 's Iliad
Along with Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Homer's "Iliad" the "Commedia" of Dante Alighieri
represents the very pinnacle of poetic accomplishment. The essay will look at the Vita Nouva as the
praise of the miracle; for such was the marvelously beneficent lady, as long as she lived, as Dante
often affirms. And in this miracle one can recognized a material attestation of Eternal Truths. And
the divine comedy is the glorification of truth itself as revealed to Dante and subsequently to Dante's
readers now days. The Vita Nuova may be called the entrance of that solemn sanctuary, the Divine
Comedy. This essay will look at Beatrice named, the bringer of beatitude, and her smile. Also
Beatrice will be interpreted as the medium of beatitude itself to Dante the poet.
The great poet [Dante] may be held in due honour and that he may be for the pupils the teacher of
Christian doctrine, he whose one purpose in his poem was 'to raise mortals from the state of misery'
that is from the state of sin, 'and lead them to the state of happiness,' that is the divine Grace.
Echoing the words of Pope Benedict XV one can see that the principal aim of the "sacred poem" of
Dante is doubtless to point out to the "people disposed to evil and deceived" the way to salvation,
using as an example that which, under the vail of poetic imagery, that Dante gives one to understand
happened in his own soul. This is the inquiry intended in this analysis of the Vita Nouva where
Dante is the receiver of an epiphany

Dantes Inferno
Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli demonstrated that the different critical exegetical positions, regarding the
Divine Comedy (whose intent appears on one side as a disciplinary and moral renewal of the
Church, and on the other side as a hidden, heretical reversion) were not free from contemporary
pressures. In fact, their own theories are able to offer a valid evidence of the nineteenth century's
political and religious debates, and for this reason, I am going to analyse the interpretation of
Dante's work by Ugo Foscolo, through both, the 'Discorso sul testo della Divina Commedia', and
two articles that Foscolo published in the Edinburgh Review' in 1818; in addition, I am going to
analyse the interpretation by Rossetti through his work titled ... Show more content on

Obviously, being impossible to summarize the vast, esoteric, exegesis of Dante proposed by them, I
am feeling obliged to try to highlight some common key of readings as, for example: 1) the relation
between the symbol of the Cross (representing the Roman Church) and the Eagle (representing the
Empire), whose doctrines are linked to mankind's need for salvation. These two institutions (Church
and Empire), according Dante's thought, had to be both settled at the centre of Rome, as at the time
of the Holy Roman Empire. In addition, according to Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli, Dante attacked the
Church exclusively because he wanted the renewal of the spiritual dimension, where the Church had
to abandon its material interests, leaving exclusively to the Empire the task to unify Peoples under a
unique government. In this way, both Church and Empire would have been able to help humankind
for their spiritual and material ends. 2) Another common key of reading, for Foscolo, Rossetti and
Valli, is linked with the symbol of Beatrice, which is seen by the three interpreters, not as a real
woman, but as a symbol of the wisdom, present in many ancient traditions. 3) I will try to highlight
the fact that the esoteric reading of Dante, is considered by both, Foscolo and Rossetti in key
heterodox, neo–Pythagorean and Ghibelline, while it is considered by Valli in super–catholic key. In
brief, in my thesis, I will try to find all common passages of Dante's oeuvre, used by
Foscolo,Rossetti and Valli, analysing and comparing them in a more rigorous possible

The Film : A Series Of Unfortunate Events By Lemony Snicket
Greed can destroy close connections with other individuals and it can also cause harm. There are
many obstacles in one's life that vary from complexity and may soon lead to destructive actions.
When I was first introduced to this movie titled, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket,
around the age of seven, there was something about it that seemed to capture my full attention. The
film's dark setting and dismal theme kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. As a
child, I was into video games and books. I always had my eyes on some new series or video game
that was coming out. When this game, based under the same movie, had just came out, I was
desperate to have it in my presence. As I opened the package, I was given a free pair of movie
tickets to watch Lemony Snicket's: A Series of Unfortunate Events. At a young age like this, I was
beyond excited to watch the film. I have so many feelings towards this movie and it was nothing as I
expected it to be. The tragedies that occur throughout the events and a successful ending that
demonstrated a clear message on everything it takes to move on forward. I would say this movie
presented a positive influence on my view of the real world because of the different types of logics
that were presented throughout every event. To be able to overcome the impossible obstacles in life,
you would need to continuously push yourself through the rain or the shine.
In the real world, it takes a great deal of bravery and

Good and Evil in Dante’s Divine Comedy and Chaucer’s The...
Good and evil are concocted differently in every imagination. To some, evil is the most appalling
sins, including such heinous acts such as murder, rape, distortion, or betrayal. To others, evil might
be something so simple as indecisiveness, extravagance, or vain glory. Goodness is ambiguous to
mankind as well because one man might define goodness as the ordinary man living a free life, yet
another might conclude that true goodness is obtainable only through a perfect, honorable lifestyle,
completely abstaining from worldly endeavors. One's attitude at good and evil will predetermine
their values, actions, and points of interest. Whether life is spent pursuing heavenly goals or the

Dante was a man with a vision. He lived in a world that was "Torn by discord" (Limentani,117).
Born in 1265, Dante's Florence was the center of a war ravaged Italy. He became involved in
politics at a young age and before too long became a White Guelph, one who supported the Papacy
in the fight against invading Germanic kings. 1301 was a tragic year because it marked the
beginning of the Black Guelph regime and saw Dante exiled from his home town forever. These
experiences made Dante quickly realize that this world is corrupt to the core. "Greed for material
things is the main fault, greed which is allowed to dictate the actions of men. Only a cessation of
strife, the establishment of universal peace can ensure the happiness of mankind and allow men to
pursue the ultimate aim for which God has destined them on earth, that of exercising constantly and
to the full their distinctive quality, the 'Virtus Intellective' (virtuous intellect)" (Limentani,117). He
believed that all life on this earth has a purpose and meaning to it. This can be seen in the Inferno
because during the long trek through Hell Dante does almost nothing but work to arrive a Paradise,
the heavenly end to all those lacking wickedness. He traveled far trying to make his life purposeful
by working his way up to Heaven. Chaucer stood in contrast to Dante's almost dogmatic piety and
looked to other things as having

Analysis Of Daniel Handler's A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Most authors tend to write their books in a cheerful way. Daniel Handler, on the other hand, writes
in a gloomy style, showing the not–so–nice things that can happen to people. For example, the three
Baudelaire orphans in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Siblings who just lose their parents in a
deadly house fire and have to deal with the trouble known as Count Olaf, a villain after their
enormous inheritance. Handler wrote the 13 books in the series under the pseudonym Lemony
Snicket. A Series of Unfortunate Events is Handler's best–known work. In the last book of the
series, the three Baudelaires are in the middle of the ocean on a boat after leaving a burning hotel
where they worked undercover. Unfortunately, the children are accompanied by Count Olaf, the
man after their money. "And the Baudelaire fortune is finally mine!" Olaf cackled "Finally, I am a
very wealthy man, which means everybody must do what I say!" Was Olaf's reaction to their
predicament even though his statement is completely false. Snicket made Count Olaf the antagonist
in the story, a manipulative villain where in his mind money equals power. He lives in his own
fairytale where he is superior. To make the Baudelaires situation worse, a storm is added to the mix
showing that the kids can never get a break, pushing their intelligence and strength. The storm led
the Baudelaires and Olaf to an island of strange customs. "But the Baudelaires could not help but
feel that they were abandoning their previous

Divine Comedy Poem
The Divine Comedy The Divine Comedy is a narrative poem, which was written by Dante Alighieri.
The long narrative poem was written from 1308 and was completed around 1320. A deep analysis of
The Divine Comedy reveals that the poem is in a way, a story about Dante's journey throughout life
to the final salvation. The opening canto of the poem starts in the middle of Dante's life, where he
finds himself in a dark wood, with no clear direction in which to go. This canto becomes the
introduction to the Divine Comedy. The poem, (considered to be one of the greatest works in the
history of literature) is viewed as the finest work in the whole of Italian literature. Famous during its
time, the poem seems to somewhat represent the medieval world–view (similar to that which had
been developed by the Western Church in the 14th century). This representation is brought about by
the poem through excellent imaginative vision of the afterlife. The Divine Comedy was among the
last works of Dante Alighieri, who met his death in 1321, a year after completion of this particular
poem. For the purpose of this essay, an analysis of The Divine Comedy will be researched. The
Divine Comedy is a trilogy containing three volumes, each of which contains 33 cantos, otherwise
known as chapters, (Dante, Alighieri). The three volumes are Inferno, Paradiso and Purgatorio. In all
the three volumes, Dante Alighieri plays the author as well as the central character. The poem is

The Theme Of Life In Dante's Inferno
After reading Dante's Divine Comedy or Dante's Inferno by Dante Alighieri, it would appear that
this is a story about a man describing how his exile is leading him towards hell. At the beginning of
the story, Dante starts out by saying, "In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself within
a dark woods where the straight way was lost" (page 27). The reader will assume that this story is
about Dante explaining his views of hell separated into nine circles. Alighieri's writings gave
context relating to his life from his exile to his beloved.
The story Dante's Inferno is about a man's journey through hell. The main character, Dante, has just
been exiled from his home and is now trying to find the right road. The significance of the
beginning is the religious aspect of Dante's adventure of leaving to another realm. In my opinion,
the straight way is through faith in God. The dark woods represents sins and fear in God. He was
lost in sin and he sets out to look for God in a sinful world. The Guelph–Ghibelline Wars was a
struggle between the papacy and the holy roman empire. There was a split, which created two
factions in the Guelphs. One was a white faction, which supported independence from the Pope. The
other was the black, whose people were willing to work with the Pope. Alighieri was fighting with
for white faction. Those against the Pope, including Dante, were exiled from the Italian Peninsula.
Dante felt lost in the world and wanted to find confidence in God

James Simmons 'Sonnet For The Class Of' 58
Life as the Graduates of the Class of '58
James Simmons' poem 'Sonnet for the Class of '58' displays the conditions and society modern men
live in. The poem develops its idea by giving examples of the graduates' lives in adult world that is
completely different from what they expected. As the speaker talks about how the ideal changes into
only basic things in life, his words provoke the reader to think about their lives and compare them
with their lives. The poem suggests the collapse of the ideal that young people have as they grow
older and gain more experiences about reality of life.
The argument is developed through the speaker's attitude toward his friends with realization that life
is not what they expected it to be. In the first line ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the poem, life is not easy as the graduates and we thought it would be; there are
obstacles and finally we have to endure and live unhappy. The poem teaches us about cruelty of real
world that breaks our hopes and ideals; this cruelty is a consequence of society that people have to
compete with others. After graduation, the graduates dream big, expect to chaste their dreams and to
be successful. They also have moral principles in life and think that they will never break their own
rule, but modern life doesn't allow them to do that, and then they stuck in the unhappy modern
world as we can see in the poem. Only when they are drunk, 'life seem as it once seemed' (8); this is
a condition of people who have to drink to be happy and forget their miserable life, and we can see
through alcohol sales that people really need to drink to gain their happiness. In addition, ideal
everybody has seems to be destroyed when they grow up, and even people who are very successful
and have power are disappointed with what they have become. This approach can be seen in the
couplet: 'even those who've gained more power and sense/ feel sorry when they feel the difference'
(13–14). Here the poem suggests that the society crushes their dreams and it relates to the conditions
of the society; people have to fight with energy crisis and weak currency. Facing these problems to
make a living, people are stressful and quit their expectations, and it leads to the collapse of their
ideal. Finally the graduates only want what they think they can

Elizabeth Siddal And The Femme Fatale
In pre–Raphaelite paintings, a famously known model, Elizabeth Siddal appears as an idealised
form of female body. In the 19th century, she was the central figure of the muse that often combined
with man's fantasy and sensuality with poetic idealism. Although Rossetti and Siddal's marriage was
not so idealised rather a tragedy, but they formed a relationship of an artist and the muse. After the
death of Siddal, Rossetti departed from the notion of ideal women but he was preoccupied with the
theme of "Lilith' in both his paintings and poetry. Rossetti manifested many of the demonized figure
imagery, the "femme fatal", in his art and to a certain extent, we could see that he was not free from
the memory of his wronged wife. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that many male artists depicted the
female body imagery in two categories, which are either the idealised, "the muse" or the cult of
feminine beauty, "the femme fatale." Those binary structured perception between the muse and the
femme fatale have a strong relationship with the man's agony and anxiety over the female
challenges that were emerging at different levels of society. Bear this ideas in mind, the paper
attempts to explore the "Lilith" images in Rossetti's art with the particular focus on how the muse
turned into femme fatale. Furthermore, it will discuss Rossetti's engagements with his wife,
Elizabeth Siddal from the perspective of personal and psychological aspects. First, the paper will
briefly discuss the

Consumerism: A Big Part in Modern Human Life
Introduction Humans are highly influenced by visual contents and appearances, they are attracted to
appealing images, they are curious by the weird, and they also can be unconsciously manipulated by
it. Consumer culture is highly filled by visuals, images and symbolism; a brand can be considered
desirable by its outward appearance, a musician or a celebrity is known mostly by their distinct
external images, and likewise posters, magazines, and mass media are also extremely populated
with visuals. We are clearly depend on visual language and easily swayed by it, it is especially
evident in consumption activities that focuses on images and symbolism, and more so in than
modern era than in any other. Consuming became part of the modern life, or perhaps it was
modernity that was actually brought by consumer culture. Consumerism turned out to be a big part
in modern human life, the modern form of consumption brings with it the promise of a good life and
good feelings; that is probably why it became a type of entertainment rather than necessity, a
luxurious and leisure activity exchanged for free time. The idea of exchanging your time for
materialistic goods is part of the capital economy; it is said that consumer culture came to be
because capitalism surfaced as an economy force, along with the beginning of modernity (Storken,
2009). Modernity is more understood here as the mass production, industrial revolution, and people
moving to urban centers that happened during the

Dante 's View On The Existence Of Hell, Purgatory And...
Who is Dante? He was a man that had a desire to find the truths of heaven and earth even from a
very young age; his goal was to understand the three worlds in his mind of hell, purgatory and
paradise so that he could find the true everlasting happiness. In Dante's age there was not really a
separation between church and state. "Dante 's philosophical view was also a political view. In
Dante 's time, there were two major political factions, the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. Originally,
the Ghibellines represented the medieval aristocracy, which wished to retain the power of the Holy
Roman Emperor in Italy, as well as in other parts of Europe. The Ghibellines fought hard in this
struggle for the nobility to retain its feudal powers over the land and the people in contrast, the
Guelphs, of which Dante was a member, were mainly supported by the rising middle class,
represented by rich merchants, bankers, and new landowners. The enemy was politically,
philosophically, and theologically wrong – and thus a Heretic" He was a supporter of the papacy
which was a direct opposition to the Holy Roman Emperor, therefore putting himself in danger of
his beliefs. What did he believe? He believed in the salvation which started out with Adam and Eve
in the Garden of Eden, and Eve tempted Adam to partake of the tree of good and evil. After that they

The Famous Poems Of Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal
One of the most famous poems of Charles Baudelaire "Les Fleurs du mal", he introduces the term
Flaneur. Meaning stroller or anbler, this word has no literal explanation in the English language.
Flâneur is a person who generally moves around on the streets. Baudelaire, in one of his earliest
poems, "The Sun" which depicted the spontaneous quality of frolic through the city: "Along the old
outskirts of town, where Venetian blinds in hovel hide secret lecheries, when the cruel sun strikes
with redoubled ray town and country, rooftop and wheatfield, I go to practice by myself my
whimsical swordsmanship, sniffing at any corner for chance rhymes, tripping over words like curbs,
bumping sometimes into lines long sought in dreams." Flâneur strays around the city to understand
the secretive bliss in its earliest embodiment. The poetic creativity here is considered as the origin of
capital. The stroller or the artist can happily forget about the worries when on the streets and here he
even finds the rhythm and expression to nourish his poetry. In later demonstrations, Flaneur is filled
with separation, sorrow and spleen as it has been described. Paris was considered to be the most
typical lieu d'exil, which was the emblem of the barren status of modernity. Flaneur goes through an
intense namelessness which lines the personality of the flâneur. The skill of the Flaneur lies in his
craft of converting the "spleen", discontent and agony into bliss.

Book Review : Dante's Inferno
I – Author's Biography:
Dante's Inferno is written by Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet in the early 14th century. He was born
in 1265 in Florence, the city of Renaissance and art, and raised Roman Catholic. He was considered
a 'world–class poet' and was known for his involvement in politics, which led him to being exiled
from Florence due to banishing several rivals and causing chaos. He put his experiences and
thoughts concerning his travels outside of Florence after banishment into 'Divine Comedy,' his most
well–known novel to date, and was the start of his writing career. In Dante's 'Inferno,' Alighieri
includes his wife, Beatrice, as the wife of novel Dante. She is not just incorporated in 'Inferno,' but
in many other novels such as 'Divine Comedy' as a guide, and 'La Vita Nuova,' an entire book of
poems dedicated to her. He died of malaria in Ravenna, Italy, in 1321 in early Fall, after completing
over 10 evergreen novels.
II – Plot Overview/About the Book:
Inferno opens on the eve of Good Friday in the 1300's. Dante is wondering though a "dark wood" or
a forest where he encounters obstacles presented as a leopard, a lion, and a she–wolf, and lastly the
spirit of a Roman poet by the name of Virgil. Virgil describes their journey through the gates of hell,
actual hell, and lastly reaching heaven, where Beatrice resides. We are allowed to envision the sights

is centered around a series of probable unfortunate events. Although, this movie may be lined with
satirical comedy, it's main storyline is rather gothic in nature. The gothic nature of this movie is
developed by its realism in its villain, plot line, and characters. Lemony Snicket's A Series of
Unfortunate Events, is about three young children whose parents died unexpectedly in a house fire,
leaving them orphaned. The three children are left to their closest relative, Count Olaf, a narcissistic
struggling actor who is a horribly unsuitable parent. It is made apparent early on that Count Olaf is
only after the Baudelaire children's inheritance. He quickly figures out he has no access to the
money, and neither do the children, until Violet the oldest turns 18, or the children die. The entire
movie is based around Count Olaf's many attempts to claim the money. For example; marrying
Violet, killing off a distant relative, leaving the children locked in a car on train tracks, ect. Count
Olaf's first play at the money, is forcing Violet to marry him by holding, Sunny hostage until after
the wedding. He disguises the wedding as a play and cons a judge into officiating the wedding.

He has been compared to the most famous poet ever, Shakespeare. He has been said to be the only

Dante died in 1321 while traveling to Venice. What most people think was that he caught a disease

Domenico Di Michelino 's Divine Comedy
Domenico di Michelino: Dante's Divine Comedy & Painting
Introduction:
Domenico di Michelino (1417–1491), an Italian painter and medieval poet was known best for his
epic poem, The Divine Comedy, which includes sections representing the three tiers of the Christian
afterlife: Purgatory (Purgatorio), Hell (Inferno), and Paradise (Paradiso). This poem was a great
work of medieval literature and was considered the greatest work of literature composed in Italian.
The Divine Comedy was a Christian vision of mankind's eternal fate. When The Divine Comedy
was written, Dante made a cathedral painting that represents his poem called Dante and His Poem.
In the painting, the Dante shows the 3 tiers related to the Christian afterlife. Dante was standing in a
red robed colossus, revealing his poem to the city of Florence. The painting was full of great
meaning, inspiring so many artists from Rodin to Robert Rauschenberg.
Biographical Details: Dante was born in Florence, Italy to Alaghiero and Bella. His mom died
before Dante turned 10 years old, and he soon had a new stepmother and two new siblings. He once
lived in Bologna for a couple of years until his exiles were banished then he moved to Padua. He
took his name from his teacher, a carver in bone and ivory named Michelino. He was elected to the
Compagnia di San Luca (painter 's guild) in 1442 and joined the Arte dei Medici e degli Speziali in

The Divine Comedy By Dante Aleghiri
Dante Aleghiri 's Divine Comedy is widely taught and written about. In it Dante, the author, details
his trip through Hell, Purgatory, and then Paradise. The Divine Comedy was written during Dante 's
exile from his beloved city of Florence Italy. The work itself is read at various different levels. One
could read it as a theological work, a political work, simply as a poetic work, or even as a
philosophical work. In his work, "Dante's Paradiso: No Human Beings Allowed" philosophy
professor Bruce Silver argues that, " Dante is not a philosopher," instead he just deals with
philosophical issues, "including the relation between reasoning well and happiness." Dr. Jason
Aleksander, the philosophy department chair at Saint Xavier 's University, would disagree, stating,
"In short, for Dante, wisdom, 'the body of philosophy, ' results from the proper ordering of earthly
desires or, in other words, 'from the order among the moral virtues. '" Aleksander sees Dante as a
philosopher tackling philosophical issues and because he takes that stance he interprets Dante
differently than Silver does. Though both see Dante 's work as philosophical they take differing
stances on certain points and actually tackle the work in two different ways. Silver makes concise
arguments towards Dante trying to deal with the balance between reason and faith. He specifically
talks about, "the relation between reasoning well and happiness." Silver uses several different
philosophers to prove his point,

Dante's Divine Reason And Divine Reason
Divine wisdom will never be attainable, as it is a knowledge that is only truly understood by God.
Though this may sound like common sense, I believe that how we live can change our distance from
obtaining even an inch of this insight. Since Dante himself proposes the way of achieving it, I have
taken it upon myself to explore why it is difficult for humans to realize this, if it is as simple as
utilizing both faith and reason, the two wings needed to rise towards God. Throughout the comedy,
one of the main themes is divine reason versus human reason, which accounts for the changes in
Dante, whom is coming to these greater truths found only through God. However, we struggle to
take that same course, because our society allows us to encounter false prophets, whom I will
explore further through one of Dante's most popular characters, Ulysses. This tragic hero is more
tragically a reason for our estrangement from God. Thus people may not always see where reason,
where a quest for wisdom, fails and so, I place St. Francis and St. Dominic side–by–side in order to
demonstrate why one should not be without the other. "Where one is, it is right to introduce (33), the
other: side by side, they fought, so may (34), they share in glory and together gleam." (Paradiso
12:33–35). Divine reasoning is beyond the scope of man, as it cannot be reached through our own
way of thinking, researching or exploring. It calls for the guiding hand of divinity and thus, it is not
always clear or

Dante, from 1295 to 1297, was part of the Special Council of the

The Blacks, or Donati, were of noble birth and lineage but were not exceedingly rich, and they saw

of the aristocracy, they wished to remain independent of all control, papal or imperial. After a

Art Analysis: Beata Beatrix By Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Beata Beatrix is an oil on canvas painting by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, finished on 1870. Dante has
described a woman figure at the moment of her death, based on the image of Beatrice Portinari from
Dante Alighieri's poem La Vita Nuova. The poem tells the story of Dante's one–sided love for
Beatrice Portinari and later on his sadness over her premature death. Rossetti was inspired by this
story and drawn the artwork which represents his imaginary of Beatrice described from Dante's text,
shows Beatrice in the visionary act of her own death and also commemorates Rossetti's late wife
and frequent model, Elizabeth Siddal, who had died in 1862.
This painting portrays an unreal Beatrice in her 'sudden spiritual transfiguration' (Rossetti, in a letter
of 1873, quoted in Wilson, p.86), with such relaxed and peaceful composure: her hands are opened
in front of her and her lips are parted. It seems as if she had already prefigured her own death and
welcomed it as a blessing. Beatrice's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Impressionism And Contribution To Edouard Manet
Edouard Manet
Numerous art historians believe that the birth of modern art can be traced back to Edouard Manet.
Countless artists of note since Manet's time have been influenced by the legacy he left behind.
Manet completely deviated from the established artistic traditions, and invented a entirely new type
of painting. He was thought to be the frontrunner of the avant–garde.
He introduced two new features to painting that changed art forever; the adaptation of the image
into a personal individual vision, which was completely at odds with existing art practices and the
recognition of the fundamental pretense of painting. Manet forged the between Realism and
Impressionism, which in turn encouraged many artists, in particular, the Impressionists ... Show

Manet felt that modern art should concern itself with everyday life. Modern artists could do this by
moving through the city, observing life as it occurs.
Manet moved to a new studio in 1861 in the district of Batignolles near an area known as Petit
Pologne. Petit Pologne was home to the underprivileged who were being ejected by the
redevelopment taking place in Paris under Hausmann.
Manet was already conscious of Diderot's ideas about realistic subject matter in art and of Couture's
enlightened subjects of workers, laundresses and trains.
Baudelaire's philosophy, from revolting against tradition to the unearthing of modern life, craving
something new, is the location for the painter of modern life, the streets of Paris in all their
magnificence. The artist observes the world all the while staying hidden,a voyeur. His backdrop of
choice is the city crowds. We can easily get from Baudelaire's philosophies about modern art to
Manet as a man and a painter. He put on canvas what Baudelaire put in words.
Manet saw the role of a painter as more than just a creator of images. During his time in Couture's
studio he aquired skills in stdio art but also in portraying

Pan's Labyrinth: Adult Fairy Tale Genre
1. IL POSTINO
Beatrice "Bice" di Folco Portinari (1266–1290) was a Florentine woman who has been commonly
identified as the principal inspiration for Dante Alighieri's Vita Nuova (New Life) in which Dante
expresses the medieval idea of courtly love (see next paragraph for details on this). In Vita Nuova,
Dante tries to write love poetry that was less centered on the self and more aimed at love as such: he
intended to elevate courtly love poetry, many of its tropes and its language, into sacred love poetry.
Beatrice for Dante was the embodiment of this kind of love–transparent to the Absolute, inspiring
the integration of desire aroused by beauty with the longing of the soul for divine splendor.

PAN'S LABYRINTH
ESSAY QUESTION: Research the "fairy tale" genre, in general, then discuss the way in which
director Guillermo Del Toro has created an adult fairy tale in which the innocence of fantasy
collides with the real horrors of war. Provide and discuss at least three specific examples/scenes
from the film to support your argument.
Pan's Labyrinth, a Mexican film, directed by Guillermo del Toro in 2006, created an adult fairy tale
in which innocence and fantasy collided with the real horror of war. Greenhill & Matrix
communicate that, "Fairytales are fictional narratives that combine human and non–human
protagonists with elements of wonder and the supernatural. They come in traditional (usually
collected from oral tellers) or literary (formally composed and written) forms (15)." Del Toro
created an adult fairy tale. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) journeys between fantasy and reality. Ophelia's
character is subjective to the cruel realities of war while being forced to live with captain Vidal
(Sergio Lopez). In the alternative reality, Ophelia is on a hopeful journey which will end in a joyful
reunion. When Ofelia meets the satyr creature Pan (Doug Jones) there is joy at the thought of being
a princess from an alternate reality. When Ophelia completes task one (capturing to key from the
toad) she is successful and there is hope. With the completions of the final task, there is peace when
she is accepted into her kingdom. This is a juxtaposition to the harsh realities of the real world that
is being ravaged by war and pain. The startling images of Captain Vidal killing an innocent hunter
collides with the fantasy Ophelia experiences while in the alternative world. Rebels being brutally
tortured displays images filed with fear and anger. Savage explosions and gun fire that end in mass
casualties. Ophelia is an innocent child who can escape into fantasy and gain respite from the

Dante's work, in all its complexity and its value, was a contemporary landmark even only if we

How did Dante thought to express this imaginary reality, in such a concrete appearance?
It should be added – before giving an answer to this question – that the main purpose of the author
was not necessarily to create a work of art, which the audience would simply admire. He wanted to
provide first and foremost a teaching tool, to make us – reading his book – to think of ourselves and
maybe to place ourselves exactly where we think we deserve.
Transposing us in those situations, trying to correct our lives, we can avoid the infernal circles.
Dante is not only the writer who thinks that structure, but also the character that passes through Hell
(Raffa, 11). He got there because at one point in his life he got lost.
Sins are punished by equivalent rules (which in Italian were called "the Legge del contrapasso").

How Literature Changed a Nation: Dante Alighieri and The...
Making change in a time of dark beliefs and harsh criticism is a difficult task to achieve. The poet,
Dante Alighieri's world was one filled with spirituality and stigmas. Unlike many other artists of his
time, he completed his most famous and influential work in Europe's 1300's. Dante's piece, The
Divine Comedy, demonstrates the journey one takes throughout life, to find one's self and connect
with the world and religion, all through three volumes of poetry. Of his talent, came a business of
the arts. In addition, he changed the way the Italian language was perceived. He used his writing to
help women be viewed as equals to men, and took a more tolerant position with regard to religion.

This term was, however, coined by Dante. Before him, the term was only described, not widely
accepted and used. According to Hutchinson's Biography Database, "Dante was born in Florence,
where in 1274 he first met and fell in love with Beatrice Portinari. His love for her survived her
marriage to another man and her death in 1290 at the age of 24" (2011, para. 2). Dante's love for
Beatrice caused him to be led to God. This religious affiliation later became the subject of his
renowned poem.
Rebelliously for his time, Dante did not agree with all of the teachings of the church. For instance,
Dante established the idea that those who were not Catholic may not be punished in hell, as was
thought at the time. According to Burge, Dante had an interesting view on another controversial
issue both in the 1300's and today, homosexuality, which gained him critique amongst his peers: "It
is, however, in the matter of homosexuality, where one might expect an almighty display of bigotry,
that Dante shows the greatest tolerance. We meet several homosexuals, some in Purgatory where
they are assured an eventual place in heaven" (Burge, 2011, para. 10). In his display of acceptance
for homosexuals, Dante was ahead of his time. In addition, by documenting his beliefs within his
novel, The Divine Comedy affected society's views on those with varying sexual preferences.
In many ways, Dante's work showed his realistic outlook on life and

The Role Of Identity In Dante's Inferno
The role of religion, ancestry, and nationality are crucial in forming one's identity. These items and
more come together to create a sense of security for an individual. The narrative epic poem, The
Inferno, by Dante Alighieri takes the reader with Dante on his journey through Hell and rediscovery
of his identity. Dante's journey commenced as a result to him falling into temptations whilst falling
away from God. This led him to travel through the Dark Wood of Error which symbolizes the
worldliness that occurs when one strays from the True Way, or God's Way. The spirit of the poet

Furthermore, those he converses with had impacted Dante in some way during his lifetime. The
combination of religion and nationality begin to form the prominent factors of Dante's identity as he
commences his journey through Hell in order to reestablish himself as a committed Catholic. Not
only was Dante overwhelmed by the feeling of chaos due to the fear of losing his identity, but he
was also faced with the overpowering sense of disorientation brought upon by being in Hell. The
disarray caused the need for Dante to find a way to bring security onto himself. The security that
Dante sought was found in increasing the strength of his identity. For many people, identity brings
about a sense of security because it allows them to connect with a specific group of people who are
similar to them. Knowing that there are people who think, talk, act, and believe in a similar way is
comforting to many people. For example, when Dante was exiled "He was no longer "Dante of
Florence." He was without identity, nome, or without name" (Brantley). Dante lost the security that
came with being a Florentine and being associated with Florence. Instead he was just Dante and
because of that the security he had with his identity was shaken. Dante may have shared his Catholic
beliefs with others, but once a vital part of an identity is taken away, so is the

Dante Inferno
Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet and a moral philosopher born in Florence in 1265. He is most
known for the epic poem "The Divine Comedy", which he wrote after he was exiled for twenty
years and so he began to travel and write. This epic poem was written for the purpose of warning
Christians of the society he was in to repent and fear the wrath of hell or experience the rewards of
paradise. It was most likely Dante's own experiences of love, politics and exile that inspired him to
write so deeply. "The Divine Comedy" is a work of originality. Dante is an important figure for
Italian literature and Western literature in general. The reason for that is his imagery brings the
reader into his world and his senses. Dante provides an in depth analysis of Hell and all its
dimensions, more than we would ever imagine. His imagery does not only enforce the reader to

Dante's journey goes from Hell, to purgatory and finally to paradise, leaving the readers with a
happy ending. Dante titled the epic poem "The Divine Comedy" but there is not a single joke in the
book, quite the opposite. The comedy of his journey is that it ends on a good note instead of a bad.
The most interesting aspect about Dante is, while he is on the journey though the nine circles of hell,
he does not realize that he can still achieve salvation and be forgiven and he has the opportunity to
enter paradise. Dante's imagery pulls the reader into all nine circles of hell. Also, Dante felt pity for
most of the sinners but not all of them. His sympathy declines as the story goes on. He feels the least
pity towards Simonists, those religious leaders that make a profit out of sacred

Vita Nova Trinity Number 19 Analysis
The Vita Nova has many symbolic themes throughout its structure such as the words "vita and
nova" themselves. In both Italian and English, "vita" refers to life and "nova" in Italian refers to
marvelous or strange, however in English, it refers to brightness (of light). Another symbol in the
poem is the Trinity number nine as Dante refers to it every time he has an encounter with Beatrice.
In this essay, because Vita Nova has 42 chapters, I will discuss how Beatrice represents (and/or
mirrors) light throughout chapters 2–8 (with the definition of Trinity mentioned in chapter 29),
through Dante's actual sight and uncontrollable dreams. Dante's muse represents light in chapter two

The Trinity number nine is also found in this chapter, as "it was precisely the ninth hour of that day,
three o'clock in the afternoon (III, 2). Although this is the chapter when Beatrice finally gives Dante
her salutation, the chapter's focus is in his dream. In the dream, Dante sees a powerful figure
holding his muse in one hand and forcing her to eat a "burning object" in another (III, 6). As the
human–like figure came out from "a cloud the color of fire" (III, 3), it said, "ego dominus tuus...vide
cor tuum" (III, 3; 5) to Dante, the pilgrim, which translates into, "I'm your lord...look into your
heart." In other words, the figure represents light itself (as God) since he claimed to be the lord and
because he came from "a cloud the color of fire" (III, 3). Beatrice represents light because the figure
forcibly fed her the burning object, Dante's heart, thus, giving her the ability to see through Dante's
most secret chamber as mentioned in chapter two. Although one can argue that since this human–
like figure uses force against Beatrice and comes in the form of a fiery cloud, this figure can be
mistaken as a Demon; however, because both the figure and Beatrice "ascent toward the heavens"
(III, 7), it supports my argument that the figure is actually light

T.S. Eliot
How has Eliot used both conventional and Modernist poetic techniques to represent his Modernist
concerns?
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and Preludes expresses Eliot's Modernist concerns about the
lack of morals and values in modern society through the use of personas within the urban landscape
and the urban society. Modern man's lifestyle of repetition of trivial tasks and the lack of meaningful
things in life is represented and emphasised through the use of alliteration, metaphor, fragmentation
and word choice.
The urban landscape is employed by Eliot in Preludes to demonstrate the isolated desertion of a
modern city. The use of repetition in "the showers beat on broken blinds" emphasises the polluted,

Eliot expresses his Modernist concern of the subtle, harmful nature of the urban landscape through
repetition and the metaphor of "the yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window–panes". The fog
is compared to a stray cat, crafting and cunning, attempting to get into the house, the intrusive
nature of pollution is emphasised by this. Prufrock is overwhelmed by the urban environment and
society and attempts to escape through his fantasy, "we have lingered in the chambers of the sea"
but the modern landscape proves inescapable and Prufrock is swallowed by the demands and
expectations of society, "till human voices wake us and we drown."
The modern society is also used by Eliot to express his Modernist concerns of the lack of meaning
and values in life, the superficiality of society and the lack of individuality of the people. In
Preludes, fragmentation is used to demonstrate the broken views of the people of modern society
who can no longer see themselves in a wholistic way. Fragmentation is shown through enjambment
to create broken stanzas to disorientate readers, emphasising the confusions of society. Eliot
intentionally refers to the people of the city only as "eyes" and "feet" and refers to the people
collectively, "one thinks of all the hand that are raising dingy shades in a thousand furnished rooms"

to where Kurtz is stationed, he remarks, "Well, you know that was the worst of–this suspicion of
their not being inhuman" (36). This revelation unnerves Marlow, as he finds it difficult to come to
terms with "the thought of [his] remote kinship" with people he deems savages. Marlow has had no
connection to the people in Africa as actual people, and when he does see a glimpse of their
humanity reminding him of that link, he seems to have to justify it to himself–"And why not? The
mind of man is capable of anything...he must at least be as much of a man as these on the shore"
(36). In "The Rocking Horse Winner," Lawrence explores the

Did Dante Alighieri's Narcolepsy Inspire The Divine Comedy?
Did Dante Alighieri's narcolepsy inspire The Divine Comedy?
New evidence adds fuel to the theory that the poet's dreamlike works were influenced by his
debilitating sleep disorder.
Fresh evidence supporting the theory that Dante Alighieri's musings were inspired by narcolepsy is
to be published the journal Lancet Neurology later this month.
Scientists needed to look no further that the first canto of the Inferno – the first part of Dante's 14th
century epic poem depicting his journey through the underworld, purgatory and heaven – to find
further proof il Somma Poeta (the Supreme Poet) suffered from sleeping sickness.
In the works famous opening passage the poet encounters a ferocious she–wolf while trying to
climb a hill. "Behold the beast on whose account I turned: from her protect me, O thou famous
Sage," writes Dante, "for she makes both my veins and pulses tremble". ... Show more content on

"In this famous section Dante gives a very accurate description of a flight or fight response,
centuries before the phenomenon had been explained scientifically." Galassi told The Local. "It
suggests that 700 years ago people had a good knowledge of the body's physiological responses to
fear. But it also supports the theory that the poet had narcolepsy."
Plazzi's theory goes that, if read literally and not symbolically, Dante's masterpiece, The Divine
Comedy, represents several aspects of the disease

Essay About On Delacroix And Courbet

  • 1. Essay about On Delacroix and Courbet On Delacroix and Courbet The period surrounding 1781 to 1855 in France's history is united by social and political change, an evolution of ideological struggles towards the best possible political struggle amongst anchoring human faults. The life of the artist too underwent change and struggled with the hierarchy that existed to validate artistic triumph. Changes are apparent amongst a broad spectrum, including David, Ingres, history paintings and caricatures. Artists that demonstratively epitomize the shifts, overwhelmingly united by a shift from acceptance to defiance, are Eugene Delacroix (1789 – 1863) and Gustave Courbet (1819 – 1877). Artistic and cultural differences that developed are transparent through understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Salon and its competitions dictated the motives of the artist. Delacroix's first winning painting was Dante and Virgil in Hell (1822). This painting was indeed a success: the French believed themselves to be a modern embodiment of the Classics, and Dante and Virgil reinforced this well enough. The painting is deemed "a revolution in itself." The colors blend together so much that the painting is better understood from farther away than up close. Fans triumphed it's subject matter: "...romanticism will not consist in a perfect execution, but in a conception analogous to the ethical disposition of the age." This painting, after the Divine Comedy, also embeds Delacroix in the literary movement. This movement was vital to the overall organization of history painting, as a sharp literary vocabulary of the painter was admired if not necessary. "Delacroix has a fondness for Dante and Shakespeare, two other great painters of human anguish." Delacroix concerned himself with grand, tortured ideas. This literary fascination – of Shakespeare, Bryon, Sir Walter Scott, etc. – can be seen as a departure from the classics into modernity even though it served as good grounding for him. The way of Delacroix is a distinct, unique flair. Although Delacroix was the youngest artist with works in the Louvre, his antagonistic paintings would begin to receive more demanding criticism. Gros described one of his works as "the massacre of the painting." He depicted many scenes on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Research Paper On The Divine Comedy Divine Comedy The Divine Comedy is a lengthy poem composed by a considerable Italian poet that worked primarily in the late middle ages. Composed by Dante Alighieri, who was a political thinker, writer, and poet who is remembered mostly for composing The Divine Comedy, which made a lasting impact on theology, as well as literature. Many consider Dante a genius when it came to literature, a wise man full of knowledge. He was born in Florence, Italy and lived from 1265 to 1321. Many believe Dante studied tuscan poetry while in school but it is not known where and when he went to school. He is remembered as a very influential writer who used Italian language rather than Latin. He was born into a family that was supposedly involved deeply with the Florentine political scene which was a large influence on him and his ideals which is evident throughout his works. Dante's mother had died when Dante was very young. At just 12 years old, Dante had his marriage arranged with a woman who was a family friend named Gemma Donati. The couple got married sometime around 1285, but there was just one problem. Dante had proceeded to fall in love with another woman– Beatrice Portinari, who would become a huge significance to his life and especially his work, she was very influential to him. Dante later went on and composed The New Life (La Vita Nuovo) using Beatrice as an ideal. After the unexpected death of Beatrice, Dante became quite intrigued in studying philosophy and the tactics and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Why Is Humanities Important? There are many reasons that humanities is taught. Humanities play its largest role in culture, and our understanding of it. There are certain things that it 's believed people will be better off for knowing. A lot of great works of literature fall into that category. The biggest ones are especially important because they haven 't stopped coming up. These works are continuously referenced. Another reason that humanities is taught is because it helps people express themselves better, and have a broader base from which to do so. If most of us have read and memorized the punishments in the Inferno than most people would understand. But the basic idea is that by studying humanities we 'll communicate and understand each other better. And while memorizing these infernal punishments may seem tedious, if looked at pragmatically it 's really not that difficult. The punishments are poetic, and usually make some degree of sense for the crime.. I have a similar issue with Math and Life Science courses. It's complicated when the cell structures won 't affect my daily life at all. It has to do with the way we process the world. What 's useless to you is very important to me, and maybe the opposite is true as well. And that 's reason enough for both of us to at least try to suffer through our tortures with a smile and positive outlook for a better outcome in the day. Because just a little understanding of what 's important to each other will make life better for both of us, and will help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Themes In Dante Alighieri's Make Florence Great Again Make Florence Great Again Dante Alighieri lived during a time of various warring political sides and became strongly involved in politics as much as his education and writing. He was then exiled by the unstable political climate but remained determined to contribute to Florence's well being through his writing of the epic poem, The Inferno, attempting to cleanse corrupt figures, who he believed contributed no positive aspects to Florence, by putting them in certain places of his Hell. He creates a protagonist, modeled off himself to do this and throughout the poem Dante, the protagonist, shows hostility towards sinners who contradicted his political stance such as the wrathful Filippo Argenti through diction. However, Alighieri seems to show sympathetic feelings towards the heretic Farinata Degli Uberti through diction and imagery, but he was on an opposing political side of Dante, yet Dante seems to overlook his opposing ideas and sin because the sinner states his good will towards Florence. Finally, another important sinner, Sodomite Ser Brunetto Latino, is shown compassion through Dante's interactions and the author's diction, which suggests that Dante Alighieri seems to only respect sinners who tried to protect or create a prosperous Florence, which is why he overlooks their political stance and/or sins. Alighieri reveals his first resentful feelings towards sinners of opposite political sides whom, he believes, had no intention to contribute to the development of his ... The story A Series of Unfortunate Events The Bad Beginning Lemony Snicket uses characterization, mood, and to tell how the three Baudelaire's don't get tricked by Count Olaf's greedy plan to get money. To start off, Lemony Snicket uses characterization to explain how the characters look. • 6. Dante 's Paradise Lost, And Homer 's Iliad Along with Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Homer's "Iliad" the "Commedia" of Dante Alighieri represents the very pinnacle of poetic accomplishment. The essay will look at the Vita Nouva as the praise of the miracle; for such was the marvelously beneficent lady, as long as she lived, as Dante often affirms. And in this miracle one can recognized a material attestation of Eternal Truths. And the divine comedy is the glorification of truth itself as revealed to Dante and subsequently to Dante's readers now days. The Vita Nuova may be called the entrance of that solemn sanctuary, the Divine Comedy. This essay will look at Beatrice named, the bringer of beatitude, and her smile. Also Beatrice will be interpreted as the medium of beatitude itself to Dante the poet. The great poet [Dante] may be held in due honour and that he may be for the pupils the teacher of Christian doctrine, he whose one purpose in his poem was 'to raise mortals from the state of misery' that is from the state of sin, 'and lead them to the state of happiness,' that is the divine Grace. Echoing the words of Pope Benedict XV one can see that the principal aim of the "sacred poem" of Dante is doubtless to point out to the "people disposed to evil and deceived" the way to salvation, using as an example that which, under the vail of poetic imagery, that Dante gives one to understand happened in his own soul. This is the inquiry intended in this analysis of the Vita Nouva where Dante is the receiver of an epiphany ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Dantes Inferno Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli demonstrated that the different critical exegetical positions, regarding the Divine Comedy (whose intent appears on one side as a disciplinary and moral renewal of the Church, and on the other side as a hidden, heretical reversion) were not free from contemporary pressures. In fact, their own theories are able to offer a valid evidence of the nineteenth century's political and religious debates, and for this reason, I am going to analyse the interpretation of Dante's work by Ugo Foscolo, through both, the 'Discorso sul testo della Divina Commedia', and two articles that Foscolo published in the Edinburgh Review' in 1818; in addition, I am going to analyse the interpretation by Rossetti through his work titled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously, being impossible to summarize the vast, esoteric, exegesis of Dante proposed by them, I am feeling obliged to try to highlight some common key of readings as, for example: 1) the relation between the symbol of the Cross (representing the Roman Church) and the Eagle (representing the Empire), whose doctrines are linked to mankind's need for salvation. These two institutions (Church and Empire), according Dante's thought, had to be both settled at the centre of Rome, as at the time of the Holy Roman Empire. In addition, according to Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli, Dante attacked the Church exclusively because he wanted the renewal of the spiritual dimension, where the Church had to abandon its material interests, leaving exclusively to the Empire the task to unify Peoples under a unique government. In this way, both Church and Empire would have been able to help humankind for their spiritual and material ends. 2) Another common key of reading, for Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli, is linked with the symbol of Beatrice, which is seen by the three interpreters, not as a real woman, but as a symbol of the wisdom, present in many ancient traditions. 3) I will try to highlight the fact that the esoteric reading of Dante, is considered by both, Foscolo and Rossetti in key heterodox, neo–Pythagorean and Ghibelline, while it is considered by Valli in super–catholic key. In brief, in my thesis, I will try to find all common passages of Dante's oeuvre, used by Foscolo,Rossetti and Valli, analysing and comparing them in a more rigorous possible ... • 8. The Film : A Series Of Unfortunate Events By Lemony Snicket Greed can destroy close connections with other individuals and it can also cause harm. There are many obstacles in one's life that vary from complexity and may soon lead to destructive actions. When I was first introduced to this movie titled, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, around the age of seven, there was something about it that seemed to capture my full attention. The film's dark setting and dismal theme kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. As a child, I was into video games and books. I always had my eyes on some new series or video game that was coming out. When this game, based under the same movie, had just came out, I was desperate to have it in my presence. As I opened the package, I was given a free pair of movie tickets to watch Lemony Snicket's: A Series of Unfortunate Events. At a young age like this, I was beyond excited to watch the film. I have so many feelings towards this movie and it was nothing as I expected it to be. The tragedies that occur throughout the events and a successful ending that demonstrated a clear message on everything it takes to move on forward. I would say this movie presented a positive influence on my view of the real world because of the different types of logics that were presented throughout every event. To be able to overcome the impossible obstacles in life, you would need to continuously push yourself through the rain or the shine. In the real world, it takes a great deal of bravery and ... • 9. Good and Evil in Dante’s Divine Comedy and Chaucer’s The... Good and evil are concocted differently in every imagination. To some, evil is the most appalling sins, including such heinous acts such as murder, rape, distortion, or betrayal. To others, evil might be something so simple as indecisiveness, extravagance, or vain glory. Goodness is ambiguous to mankind as well because one man might define goodness as the ordinary man living a free life, yet another might conclude that true goodness is obtainable only through a perfect, honorable lifestyle, completely abstaining from worldly endeavors. One's attitude at good and evil will predetermine their values, actions, and points of interest. Whether life is spent pursuing heavenly goals or the applying oneself to his or her life, their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dante was a man with a vision. He lived in a world that was "Torn by discord" (Limentani,117). Born in 1265, Dante's Florence was the center of a war ravaged Italy. He became involved in politics at a young age and before too long became a White Guelph, one who supported the Papacy in the fight against invading Germanic kings. 1301 was a tragic year because it marked the beginning of the Black Guelph regime and saw Dante exiled from his home town forever. These experiences made Dante quickly realize that this world is corrupt to the core. "Greed for material things is the main fault, greed which is allowed to dictate the actions of men. Only a cessation of strife, the establishment of universal peace can ensure the happiness of mankind and allow men to pursue the ultimate aim for which God has destined them on earth, that of exercising constantly and to the full their distinctive quality, the 'Virtus Intellective' (virtuous intellect)" (Limentani,117). He believed that all life on this earth has a purpose and meaning to it. This can be seen in the Inferno because during the long trek through Hell Dante does almost nothing but work to arrive a Paradise, the heavenly end to all those lacking wickedness. He traveled far trying to make his life purposeful by working his way up to Heaven. Chaucer stood in contrast to Dante's almost dogmatic piety and looked to other things as having ... • 11. Analysis Of Daniel Handler's A Series Of Unfortunate Events Most authors tend to write their books in a cheerful way. Daniel Handler, on the other hand, writes in a gloomy style, showing the not–so–nice things that can happen to people. For example, the three Baudelaire orphans in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Siblings who just lose their parents in a deadly house fire and have to deal with the trouble known as Count Olaf, a villain after their enormous inheritance. Handler wrote the 13 books in the series under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket. A Series of Unfortunate Events is Handler's best–known work. In the last book of the series, the three Baudelaires are in the middle of the ocean on a boat after leaving a burning hotel where they worked undercover. Unfortunately, the children are accompanied by Count Olaf, the man after their money. "And the Baudelaire fortune is finally mine!" Olaf cackled "Finally, I am a very wealthy man, which means everybody must do what I say!" Was Olaf's reaction to their predicament even though his statement is completely false. Snicket made Count Olaf the antagonist in the story, a manipulative villain where in his mind money equals power. He lives in his own fairytale where he is superior. To make the Baudelaires situation worse, a storm is added to the mix showing that the kids can never get a break, pushing their intelligence and strength. The storm led the Baudelaires and Olaf to an island of strange customs. "But the Baudelaires could not help but feel that they were abandoning their previous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Divine Comedy Poem The Divine Comedy The Divine Comedy is a narrative poem, which was written by Dante Alighieri. The long narrative poem was written from 1308 and was completed around 1320. A deep analysis of The Divine Comedy reveals that the poem is in a way, a story about Dante's journey throughout life to the final salvation. The opening canto of the poem starts in the middle of Dante's life, where he finds himself in a dark wood, with no clear direction in which to go. This canto becomes the introduction to the Divine Comedy. The poem, (considered to be one of the greatest works in the history of literature) is viewed as the finest work in the whole of Italian literature. Famous during its time, the poem seems to somewhat represent the medieval world–view (similar to that which had been developed by the Western Church in the 14th century). This representation is brought about by the poem through excellent imaginative vision of the afterlife. The Divine Comedy was among the last works of Dante Alighieri, who met his death in 1321, a year after completion of this particular poem. For the purpose of this essay, an analysis of The Divine Comedy will be researched. The Divine Comedy is a trilogy containing three volumes, each of which contains 33 cantos, otherwise known as chapters, (Dante, Alighieri). The three volumes are Inferno, Paradiso and Purgatorio. In all the three volumes, Dante Alighieri plays the author as well as the central character. The poem is written using the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Theme Of Life In Dante's Inferno After reading Dante's Divine Comedy or Dante's Inferno by Dante Alighieri, it would appear that this is a story about a man describing how his exile is leading him towards hell. At the beginning of the story, Dante starts out by saying, "In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself within a dark woods where the straight way was lost" (page 27). The reader will assume that this story is about Dante explaining his views of hell separated into nine circles. Alighieri's writings gave context relating to his life from his exile to his beloved. The story Dante's Inferno is about a man's journey through hell. The main character, Dante, has just been exiled from his home and is now trying to find the right road. The significance of the beginning is the religious aspect of Dante's adventure of leaving to another realm. In my opinion, the straight way is through faith in God. The dark woods represents sins and fear in God. He was lost in sin and he sets out to look for God in a sinful world. The Guelph–Ghibelline Wars was a struggle between the papacy and the holy roman empire. There was a split, which created two factions in the Guelphs. One was a white faction, which supported independence from the Pope. The other was the black, whose people were willing to work with the Pope. Alighieri was fighting with for white faction. Those against the Pope, including Dante, were exiled from the Italian Peninsula. Dante felt lost in the world and wanted to find confidence in God ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The poem develops its idea by giving examples of the graduates' lives in adult world that is completely different from what they expected. As the speaker talks about how the ideal changes into only basic things in life, his words provoke the reader to think about their lives and compare them with their lives. The poem suggests the collapse of the ideal that young people have as they grow older and gain more experiences about reality of life. The argument is developed through the speaker's attitude toward his friends with realization that life is not what they expected it to be. In the first line ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the poem, life is not easy as the graduates and we thought it would be; there are obstacles and finally we have to endure and live unhappy. The poem teaches us about cruelty of real world that breaks our hopes and ideals; this cruelty is a consequence of society that people have to compete with others. After graduation, the graduates dream big, expect to chaste their dreams and to be successful. They also have moral principles in life and think that they will never break their own rule, but modern life doesn't allow them to do that, and then they stuck in the unhappy modern world as we can see in the poem. Only when they are drunk, 'life seem as it once seemed' (8); this is a condition of people who have to drink to be happy and forget their miserable life, and we can see through alcohol sales that people really need to drink to gain their happiness. In addition, ideal everybody has seems to be destroyed when they grow up, and even people who are very successful and have power are disappointed with what they have become. This approach can be seen in the couplet: 'even those who've gained more power and sense/ feel sorry when they feel the difference' (13–14). Here the poem suggests that the society crushes their dreams and it relates to the conditions of the society; people have to fight with energy crisis and weak currency. Facing these problems to make a living, people are stressful and quit their expectations, and it leads to the collapse of their ideal. Finally the graduates only want what they think they can ... In the 19th century, she was the central figure of the muse that often combined with man's fantasy and sensuality with poetic idealism. Although Rossetti and Siddal's marriage was not so idealised rather a tragedy, but they formed a relationship of an artist and the muse. After the death of Siddal, Rossetti departed from the notion of ideal women but he was preoccupied with the theme of "Lilith' in both his paintings and poetry. Rossetti manifested many of the demonized figure imagery, the "femme fatal", in his art and to a certain extent, we could see that he was not free from the memory of his wronged wife. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that many male artists depicted the female body imagery in two categories, which are either the idealised, "the muse" or the cult of feminine beauty, "the femme fatale." Those binary structured perception between the muse and the femme fatale have a strong relationship with the man's agony and anxiety over the female challenges that were emerging at different levels of society. Bear this ideas in mind, the paper attempts to explore the "Lilith" images in Rossetti's art with the particular focus on how the muse turned into femme fatale. In Dante's age there was not really a separation between church and state. "Dante 's philosophical view was also a political view. In Dante 's time, there were two major political factions, the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. Originally, the Ghibellines represented the medieval aristocracy, which wished to retain the power of the Holy Roman Emperor in Italy, as well as in other parts of Europe. The Ghibellines fought hard in this struggle for the nobility to retain its feudal powers over the land and the people in contrast, the Guelphs, of which Dante was a member, were mainly supported by the rising middle class, represented by rich merchants, bankers, and new landowners. The stroller or the artist can happily forget about the worries when on the streets and here he even finds the rhythm and expression to nourish his poetry. In later demonstrations, Flaneur is filled with separation, sorrow and spleen as it has been described. Paris was considered to be the most typical lieu d'exil, which was the emblem of the barren status of modernity. The Divine Comedy was written during Dante 's exile from his beloved city of Florence Italy. The work itself is read at various different levels. One could read it as a theological work, a political work, simply as a poetic work, or even as a philosophical work. In his work, "Dante's Paradiso: No Human Beings Allowed" philosophy professor Bruce Silver argues that, " Dante is not a philosopher," instead he just deals with philosophical issues, "including the relation between reasoning well and happiness." Dr. Jason Aleksander, the philosophy department chair at Saint Xavier 's University, would disagree, stating, "In short, for Dante, wisdom, 'the body of philosophy, ' results from the proper ordering of earthly desires or, in other words, 'from the order among the moral virtues. '" Aleksander sees Dante as a philosopher tackling philosophical issues and because he takes that stance he interprets Dante differently than Silver does. Though both see Dante 's work as philosophical they take differing stances on certain points and actually tackle the work in two different ways. • 25. Dante's Divine Reason And Divine Reason Divine wisdom will never be attainable, as it is a knowledge that is only truly understood by God. Though this may sound like common sense, I believe that how we live can change our distance from obtaining even an inch of this insight. Since Dante himself proposes the way of achieving it, I have taken it upon myself to explore why it is difficult for humans to realize this, if it is as simple as utilizing both faith and reason, the two wings needed to rise towards God. Throughout the comedy, one of the main themes is divine reason versus human reason, which accounts for the changes in Dante, whom is coming to these greater truths found only through God. However, we struggle to take that same course, because our society allows us to encounter false prophets, whom I will explore further through one of Dante's most popular characters, Ulysses. This tragic hero is more tragically a reason for our estrangement from God. Thus people may not always see where reason, where a quest for wisdom, fails and so, I place St. Francis and St. Dominic side–by–side in order to demonstrate why one should not be without the other. "Where one is, it is right to introduce (33), the other: side by side, they fought, so may (34), they share in glory and together gleam." (Paradiso 12:33–35). Dante has described a woman figure at the moment of her death, based on the image of Beatrice Portinari from Dante Alighieri's poem La Vita Nuova. The poem tells the story of Dante's one–sided love for Beatrice Portinari and later on his sadness over her premature death. Rossetti was inspired by this story and drawn the artwork which represents his imaginary of Beatrice described from Dante's text, shows Beatrice in the visionary act of her own death and also commemorates Rossetti's late wife and frequent model, Elizabeth Siddal, who had died in 1862. This painting portrays an unreal Beatrice in her 'sudden spiritual transfiguration' (Rossetti, in a letter of 1873, quoted in Wilson, p.86), with such relaxed and peaceful composure: her hands are opened in front of her and her lips are parted. • 30. Dante's Work Dante's work, in all its complexity and its value, was a contemporary landmark even only if we consider the admiration which Boccaccio sent to him; over the centuries, from Chaucer and Chateaubriand, to Miguel de Unamuno, all the great minds have turned to the model represented by Dante. Although Vita Nuova it is widely known as the most noble manifesto of Italian poetry (Hede, p.34), and the most perfect expression of the sweet new style, a mostly candid and ingénue story of Dante's love for the Florentine Beatrice Portinari, Dante's name became synonymous with The Divine Comedy. The writer began to write his masterpiece since 1307, before his exile years, and it was the capital work that Dante has developed until the last moment of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How did Dante thought to express this imaginary reality, in such a concrete appearance? It should be added – before giving an answer to this question – that the main purpose of the author was not necessarily to create a work of art, which the audience would simply admire. He wanted to provide first and foremost a teaching tool, to make us – reading his book – to think of ourselves and maybe to place ourselves exactly where we think we deserve. Transposing us in those situations, trying to correct our lives, we can avoid the infernal circles. Dante is not only the writer who thinks that structure, but also the character that passes through Hell (Raffa, 11). He got there because at one point in his life he got lost. Sins are punished by equivalent rules (which in Italian were called "the Legge del contrapasso"). Each type of sin is punished in an equivalent manner. • 31. How Literature Changed a Nation: Dante Alighieri and The... Making change in a time of dark beliefs and harsh criticism is a difficult task to achieve. The poet, Dante Alighieri's world was one filled with spirituality and stigmas. Unlike many other artists of his time, he completed his most famous and influential work in Europe's 1300's. Dante's piece, The Divine Comedy, demonstrates the journey one takes throughout life, to find one's self and connect with the world and religion, all through three volumes of poetry. Of his talent, came a business of the arts. In addition, he changed the way the Italian language was perceived. He used his writing to help women be viewed as equals to men, and took a more tolerant position with regard to religion. Due to its effects on language, religion, and ... According to Hutchinson's Biography Database, "Dante was born in Florence, where in 1274 he first met and fell in love with Beatrice Portinari. His love for her survived her marriage to another man and her death in 1290 at the age of 24" (2011, para. 2). Dante's love for Beatrice caused him to be led to God. This religious affiliation later became the subject of his renowned poem. Rebelliously for his time, Dante did not agree with all of the teachings of the church. For instance, Dante established the idea that those who were not Catholic may not be punished in hell, as was thought at the time. According to Burge, Dante had an interesting view on another controversial issue both in the 1300's and today, homosexuality, which gained him critique amongst his peers: "It is, however, in the matter of homosexuality, where one might expect an almighty display of bigotry, that Dante shows the greatest tolerance. We meet several homosexuals, some in Purgatory where they are assured an eventual place in heaven" (Burge, 2011, para. 10). In his display of acceptance for homosexuals, Dante was ahead of his time. In addition, by documenting his beliefs within his novel, The Divine Comedy affected society's views on those with varying sexual preferences. • 32. The Role Of Identity In Dante's Inferno The role of religion, ancestry, and nationality are crucial in forming one's identity. These items and more come together to create a sense of security for an individual. The narrative epic poem, The Inferno, by Dante Alighieri takes the reader with Dante on his journey through Hell and rediscovery of his identity. Dante's journey commenced as a result to him falling into temptations whilst falling away from God. This led him to travel through the Dark Wood of Error which symbolizes the worldliness that occurs when one strays from the True Way, or God's Way. The spirit of the poet Virgil, symbolizing Human Reason, appears and leads Dante away from the Dark Wood of Error and to the Divine Illumination with a journey through Hell. The need ... The combination of religion and nationality begin to form the prominent factors of Dante's identity as he commences his journey through Hell in order to reestablish himself as a committed Catholic. Not only was Dante overwhelmed by the feeling of chaos due to the fear of losing his identity, but he was also faced with the overpowering sense of disorientation brought upon by being in Hell. The disarray caused the need for Dante to find a way to bring security onto himself. The security that Dante sought was found in increasing the strength of his identity. For many people, identity brings about a sense of security because it allows them to connect with a specific group of people who are similar to them. Knowing that there are people who think, talk, act, and believe in a similar way is comforting to many people. For example, when Dante was exiled "He was no longer "Dante of Florence." He was without identity, nome, or without name" (Brantley). Dante lost the security that came with being a Florentine and being associated with Florence. Instead he was just Dante and because of that the security he had with his identity was shaken. • 35. Dante Inferno Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet and a moral philosopher born in Florence in 1265. He is most known for the epic poem "The Divine Comedy", which he wrote after he was exiled for twenty years and so he began to travel and write. This epic poem was written for the purpose of warning Christians of the society he was in to repent and fear the wrath of hell or experience the rewards of paradise. It was most likely Dante's own experiences of love, politics and exile that inspired him to write so deeply. "The Divine Comedy" is a work of originality. Dante is an important figure for Italian literature and Western literature in general. The reason for that is his imagery brings the reader into his world and his senses. Dante provides an in depth analysis of Hell and all its dimensions, more than we would ever imagine. His imagery does not only enforce the reader to imagine the words but also to take the journey with him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dante's journey goes from Hell, to purgatory and finally to paradise, leaving the readers with a happy ending. Dante titled the epic poem "The Divine Comedy" but there is not a single joke in the book, quite the opposite. The comedy of his journey is that it ends on a good note instead of a bad. The most interesting aspect about Dante is, while he is on the journey though the nine circles of hell, he does not realize that he can still achieve salvation and be forgiven and he has the opportunity to enter paradise. Dante's imagery pulls the reader into all nine circles of hell. Also, Dante felt pity for most of the sinners but not all of them. His sympathy declines as the story goes on. He feels the least pity towards Simonists, those religious leaders that make a profit out of sacred ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Vita Nova Trinity Number 19 Analysis The Vita Nova has many symbolic themes throughout its structure such as the words "vita and nova" themselves. In both Italian and English, "vita" refers to life and "nova" in Italian refers to marvelous or strange, however in English, it refers to brightness (of light). Another symbol in the poem is the Trinity number nine as Dante refers to it every time he has an encounter with Beatrice. In this essay, because Vita Nova has 42 chapters, I will discuss how Beatrice represents (and/or mirrors) light throughout chapters 2–8 (with the definition of Trinity mentioned in chapter 29), through Dante's actual sight and uncontrollable dreams. Dante's muse represents light in chapter two because she can see all throughout his body as, during his first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Trinity number nine is also found in this chapter, as "it was precisely the ninth hour of that day, three o'clock in the afternoon (III, 2). Although this is the chapter when Beatrice finally gives Dante her salutation, the chapter's focus is in his dream. In the dream, Dante sees a powerful figure holding his muse in one hand and forcing her to eat a "burning object" in another (III, 6). As the human–like figure came out from "a cloud the color of fire" (III, 3), it said, "ego dominus tuus...vide cor tuum" (III, 3; 5) to Dante, the pilgrim, which translates into, "I'm your lord...look into your heart." In other words, the figure represents light itself (as God) since he claimed to be the lord and because he came from "a cloud the color of fire" (III, 3). Beatrice represents light because the figure forcibly fed her the burning object, Dante's heart, thus, giving her the ability to see through Dante's most secret chamber as mentioned in chapter two. Although one can argue that since this human– like figure uses force against Beatrice and comes in the form of a fiery cloud, this figure can be mistaken as a Demon; however, because both the figure and Beatrice "ascent toward the heavens" (III, 7), it supports my argument that the figure is actually light ... • 37. T.S. Eliot How has Eliot used both conventional and Modernist poetic techniques to represent his Modernist concerns? The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and Preludes expresses Eliot's Modernist concerns about the lack of morals and values in modern society through the use of personas within the urban landscape and the urban society. Modern man's lifestyle of repetition of trivial tasks and the lack of meaningful things in life is represented and emphasised through the use of alliteration, metaphor, fragmentation and word choice. The urban landscape is employed by Eliot in Preludes to demonstrate the isolated desertion of a modern city. The use of repetition in "the showers beat on broken blinds" emphasises the polluted, squalid environment and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eliot expresses his Modernist concern of the subtle, harmful nature of the urban landscape through repetition and the metaphor of "the yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window–panes". The fog is compared to a stray cat, crafting and cunning, attempting to get into the house, the intrusive nature of pollution is emphasised by this. Prufrock is overwhelmed by the urban environment and society and attempts to escape through his fantasy, "we have lingered in the chambers of the sea" but the modern landscape proves inescapable and Prufrock is swallowed by the demands and expectations of society, "till human voices wake us and we drown." The modern society is also used by Eliot to express his Modernist concerns of the lack of meaning and values in life, the superficiality of society and the lack of individuality of the people. In Preludes, fragmentation is used to demonstrate the broken views of the people of modern society who can no longer see themselves in a wholistic way. Fragmentation is shown through enjambment to create broken stanzas to disorientate readers, emphasising the confusions of society. Eliot intentionally refers to the people of the city only as "eyes" and "feet" and refers to the people collectively, "one thinks of all the hand that are raising dingy shades in a thousand furnished rooms" and the people with "all its muddy feet that press to early coffee ... Today, modern society is experience more and more of a disconnect from the real world as we connect more and more to the online world. People send text messages more than they call, and friends across the world can interact in a matter of seconds, if not instantly. As society continues to modernize, we experience the same sort of falling out with the natural order of things that authors near the turn of the century felt as their culture changed. T.S. Eliot, Joseph Conrad, and D.H. Lawrence are only three such authors to put pen to paper to explore this deracination. In Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Marlow views the people of Africa as being other, due to the separation that imperialism and industrialization has created between Europe and Africa. For example, he sees the Africans as "unhappy savages" (16), because they have not had the advantages that industrialization has brought Europe. As Marlow travels down the river to where Kurtz is stationed, he remarks, "Well, you know that was the worst of–this suspicion of their not being inhuman" (36). This revelation unnerves Marlow, as he finds it difficult to come to terms with "the thought of [his] remote kinship" with people he deems savages. Marlow has had no connection to the people in Africa as actual people, and when he does see a glimpse of their humanity reminding him of that link, he seems to have to justify it to himself–"And why not?
