Mark Strand once said, "For some of us, the less said about the way we do things the better."
(Strand). In this he might have been referring to his poems. He wrote straightforward surrealistic
poems about the nature of life with ambiguous speakers. It is common to see in his poems a story
being told without actually telling one. In this way there is a sense of who the speaker is, who the
poet is, and a peculiar train of thought expressed with very precise words.
Mark Strand was greatly influenced by his time period. The influence of surrealism, a popular form
of art in the twentieth century, is prevalent throughout his poems. Mark Strand states in his poet
laureate interview that he wished to be like the other poets of his time. He was influenced by
Wallace Stevens and Lorca when he was a college student at Yale. In college, he started as an artist
and ended as a poet (Nordhaus). His poem, " Eating Poetry" expresses his love for poetry in a
curious way, "I have been eating poetry"(3). To help bring to light his own personal feelings, he uses
surrealistic imagery. He enjoys poetry to an extent that words cannot express, but he does the

Mark Strand's poem, "Poor North" depicts the life of a married couple facing countless struggles
during a harsh winter. It tells of a man working in an unsuccessful store while his wife sits at home,
wishing for her old life back. The way the wife copes with her sadness is both intriguing and
perplexing. She misses her old life, even though it is described to have not been special; however,
the wife may be a person who never feels satisfied or fulfilled by the external world due to internal
conflict. Despite the wife's obvious misery, she stays by her husband's side and they stroll in the cold
together, bracing the wind. As a means of escape from life, she peers into her past in order to find
hope in the present.
The title of the poem implies that the home of characters is not a place where anyone would want to
spend their life. When the north is described as the "poor north," in both the title and at the end of
the first stanza, it makes it seem as though it is an established fact, recognized by anyone who has
visited or lived there. The description is solidified when the speaker says, "nothing goes right" in the
"poor north" (5). A bad experience must have occurred in order for the speaker to feel negatively
about the setting of the poem; otherwise, there would be no need for strong language to describe it.
The speaker is external, almost as though they are watching the events unfold from a distance, as if
they were looking through a window into someone else's life.

On September 12, 1016, Belmont University graciously allowed Dr. Katherine Friedman from
Vanderbilt University to come and talk to a crowd of students about the tendencies of how
deoxyribose double stranded breaks can during cell replication and the elements required to

of and how they are produced, accompanied by visual and statistical representations. Moving on,

In Mark Strands "Eating Poetry," the author tells a story of an altered view of a mundane task, taken
with a view not normally experienced by restrained society. Right or wrong as the author's actions
may be, the poet's description of his interactions is quite engaging. Expressed in three six line
stanzas, the writer flows through the highs and lows of an exceptionally intense literary experience.
In the first stanza, Strand starts his first line with the usage of intense imagery. "Ink runs from the
corners of my mouth." His usage of imagery grabs the reader's attention and has us immediately
wondering why ink is coming from the corners of his mouth. Ink is such an odd thing for someone
to have coming from their mouth, and with that one line Strand has made us long to read more. Ink
is also traditionally highly toxic, suggesting the writer may have a wish to die a slow, agonizing
death. The second line talks about how happy he is, seemingly in conflict with the first line. This
portrays that he enjoys eating ink and is rather happy with himself, as maddeningly illogical as this
may be. Line three is an example of a metaphor. We learn that the reason he has ink in his mouth is
because he was eating poetry. Reality seems to be at odds with what the writer is experiencing, as
there would be no way for the ink to still be liquid. Perhaps the sanity of the writer is in question,
and it could be that as he reads the lines of verse he is merely imagining them as

A Cord Of Three Strands Analysis
The Faculty Jazz Ensemble was on Monday, November 9 in the Westbrook Music Hall. The
Performers included Peter Bouffard on guitar, Paul Haar on saxophone, Dave Hall on drums, Tom
Larson on piano, Hans Sturm on bass, and Darryl White on trumpet. The first piece was A Cord of
Three Strands composed by Darryl White. It was in a minor mode and was in triple meter. The piece
started off with a calm piano dynamic and homophonic texture with the trumpet playing the melody
over the drums, bass, and piano playing a countermelody underneath. The trumpet soon fades out
with a cadence and the saxophone comes in with a deeper more calming sound than the trumpet,
again with a homophonic texture. The piece reminds me of a calm pouring rain. When the
saxophone and trumpet are included, the rain picks up and when it is just the drums, bass, and piano
it is like a slight drizzle of rain. The piece fizzles out in the end with a clam cadence. ... Show more
The piece starts of with a light sound and homophonic texture. The bass, piano, saxophone, and
trumpet are on the melody with the drums countering underneath. Soon, the saxophone comes in
with a solo over the rest of the instruments. This solo is flowy and lingering. The melody seems to
be conjunct. I envisioned a person ice skating, gliding around on the ice without tripping or
stumbling. As the saxophone settles out, there is a decrescendo. There is a combination between a
homophonic texture of saxophone and trumpet over bass, drums, and piano and polyphonic textures
of the bass, piano, and drums playing various different melodies. This created a great deal of tension
with made for a not so tonal rhythm. In this part, the ice skater is doing a lot of starting and
stopping, stumbling. The piece ended with a short, but complete cadence that resolved the

Double Strand Breaks (DSB)
Among the many types of DNA damage, one of the most severe is DNA double strand breaks
(DSB). DNA DSBs occur when two complementary strands break simultaneously generating two
strands which are not being held together by base–pairing and chromatin structure. Few known
causes for DSB are ionizing radiation, chemical mutagens, reactive oxygen species and drugs which
are used for chemotherapy (Goodsell, 2005). This breakage can cause chromosomal rearrangement
such as translocation and inversion, consequentially resulting in detrimental phenotypic affects.
How are these breaks repaired? DSBs can be repaired through distinct mechanistically set pathways,
as shown in figure 1, such as Homologous recombination repairs (HRR), Non–end joining
homologous repair (NHEJ) and more recently discovered Microhomology–mediated end joining
(MMEJ). HRR uses a homologous template to accurately repair the broken strand, whereas NHEJ
relies on Ku proteins (Fnu et al., 2011) and DNA ligase to repair DNA double strands, often times
causing small insertions or deletions at the joining site. MMEJ, a more recent finding, uses a 5–25
bp micorohomologous sequence to align the broken ends simultaneously always causing deletions in
the previously broken strand (McVey and Lee, 2008).
Genomic instability is a trademark of increased risk of cancers with age. This instability arises from

I did this activity with 3 children. I first had them sit down while I read the book "Sort it Out" by
Barbara Mariconda, after reading the book we talked about the different items that Pack rat came
home with, and how his mother told him to sort them out. We discussed what items at home had to
go in a particular place, for example, dishes in the kitchen, beds, in the bedrooms, toilets in the
bathrooms, to list a few. We followed by talking about the types of shoes we were wearing, and the
color of the shoes. How we were all wearing sneakers, and how every one was wearing a different
color. I Introduced them to the Jumbo Pegs, and the Pegboards, and I went over the different colors

of the novel, Henry Lambert, is sent to a survival camp by his father because he believes that Henry
is in need of self–confidence and strength. The main character loathes the idea at first; however, he

Oates' Three Girls tells the story of two girl–poets in the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan on a
snowy day in March of 1956. They wander through the aisles of poetry, with commentary about

poets passionately enamored of T.S. Eliot but scornful of Robert Frost, whom we'd been made to
memorize in high school–Slyly we communicated in code phrases from Eliot in the presence of

thoughts, as her friend touches her wrist and guides her further into the store to stumble upon

in selecting, leafing through, pausing to read books (Oates, 93) They continue to follow her until

explore connections between the ways in which Heaney and Sheers write about memories.
As poets are known to be record keepers memories are a key theme that poets often write about due
to it being a theme with such a wide range. Heaney and Sheers have both written poems about
memories. The two poems that i have chosen to focus on for this essay are 'Mametz Wood' by Owen
Sheers and 'The Strand at Lough Beg' by Seamus Heaney. Both of these poems talk about the
memories of death so they will no doubt share the same themes and ideas throughout. In the poem
Mametz Wood by Owen Sheers we can see that the title of the poem is the name of a place.
Mametz Wood is known as the place where the Battle of the Somme took place in July 1916. This
gives us the connotation that the poem will have themes of war and death throughout. The use of the

These suggest to me again the idea that death and the fear of death slow everything down and
heighten things around you. These are all things that Colum would have been experiencing in that
moment, the terrifying imagery and sound paint us a picture of the fear that would have coursed
through his veins at that moment. However there is a difference between Sheers' and Heaney's
poems here, as the soldiers were together and although they were going into something horrific they
were set out to do that and had a team with them. Colum on the other hand was isolated and had no

How Double-Strand Breaks
One explanation as to how x–rays effect cells is that the radiation causes double–strand breaks
(DSBs). A double strand break is a lesion within DNA which can prevent replication, cause
deletions, or cause translocations of the DNA. All of the named effects have the potential to cause a
mutation to a cell (Negritto, 2010). Double–strand breaks are known as genomic rearrangements
because it has been shown to change the genetic code of a cell. All of the effects of DSBs may lead
to an increase in the recombination of genes in chromosomes, which may explain how the cells are
