Case Analysis Of Coke And Pepsi
Introduction:
Coca Cola and Pepsi vied for "throat share" of the world's beverage market for over a century. The
biggest battles of the cola wars were fought over the $60 billion industry in the U.S, where the
average American consumed 53 gallons of carbonated soft drinks per years. In a carefully waged
competitive struggle, from 1975 to 2000 both Coke and Pepsi achieved annual growth of around
10% as both U.S and worldwide carbonated soft drink consumption consistently rose. This cozy
relationship was threatened in the late 1990's , however , when U.S carbonated soft drink
consumption dropped for two consecutive years and worldwide shipments slowed for both Coke and
Pepsi. In response both firms began to modify their bottling, pricing and brand strategies. They also
looked to emerging international markets to fuel growth and broadened their brand portfolios to
include non–carbonated beverages like tea, juice , sports drinks and bottled water.
Supplier Power:
In the carbonated soft drinks industry concentrate producers like Coke and Pepsi require a few
inputs. The concentrate for most regular colas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Coke and Pepsi responded by expanding their offerings, through alliances (e.g. Coke and Nestea),
acquisitions (e.g. Coke and Minute Maid), and internal product innovation (e.g. Pepsi creating
Orange Slice), capturing the value of increasingly popular substitutes internally. Proliferation in the
number of brands did threaten the profitability of bottlers through 1986, as they more frequent line
set–ups, increased capital investment, and development of special management skills for more
complex manufacturing operations and distribution. Bottlers were able to overcome these
operational challenges through consolidation to achieve economies of scale. Overall, because of the
CPs efforts in diversification, however, substitutes became less of a

The Perils Of Soft Power By Josef Joffe
The origins of American Pop have been spreading throughout the world like a wildfire. Many
cultures and societies have chosen to adopt this style of living because it is so popular. American
pop culture differs from other forms of culture in several significant ways due to the diversity in the
world. Which is why American pop culture may be spreading out a negative effect on too these
other cultures. The negative effect that the American pop culture is sending out is not only
influencing others to follow their style but also showing other cultures in their media and shining a
bad light on them. Due to this, many other cultures and societies have changed their views on
American pop culture. American pop culture is widely known for their ... Show more content on

In "The Perils of Soft Power" by Josef Joffe, he states, "a number of American thinkers, led by
Joseph S. Nye Jr. of Harvard, have argued that the United States should rely more on what he calls
its "soft power" – the contagious appeal of its ideas, its culture and its way of life – and so rely less
on the "hard power" of its stealth bombers and aircraft carriers. There is one problem with this
argument: soft power does not necessarily increase the world's love for America. It is still power,
and it can still make enemies.'' This claim is basically saying that America should focus more on
making other cultures like them more and accept them more regardless of the many negative effects
it has on them. But as the claim states, although having a more likable approach doesn't mean that
acceptance will come right away. Joffe means that America should focus on the fact that even if they
try this more approachable tactic, it could still end up with enemies all around the world. Joffe
follows up on his previous point by stating, "There may be little or no relationship between
America's ubiquity and its actual influence''. This means that while American pop culture is
spreading throughout the world ad many people try to adapt to it, even Americans don't actually
have the adaptation to their own culture. Many people are proud to show off the influence that they
have gotten from American pop culture, but when people that actually live in America don't even
have the same connection with their own culture, they end up looking foolish. America strives to
spread their culture to other but they don't even follow their own rules. Bluntly this can be a form of
hypocrisy, which is why America should focus on "soft

Reading the case, special attention should be paid to the underlying economics of the soft drink
industry and its relationship to average profits, the relationship between the different stages of the
value chain in the industry, the relationship between competitive interaction and industry profits,
and the impact of globalization on industry structure.
While preparing the case, you should start by carefully characterizing the carbonated soft drink
industry. To do this, clearly specify Coke and Pepsi's market in the value chain of the industry, their
main suppliers and main buyers.
Both concentrate producers (CP) and bottlers are profitable. These two parts of the industry are ...

The least profitable channel for soft drinks, however, was fountain sales. Profitability at these
locations was so abysmal for Coke and Pepsi that they considered this channel "paid sampling."
This was because buyers at major fast food chains only needed to stock the products of one
manufacturer, so they could negotiate for optimal pricing. Coke and Pepsi found these channels
important, however, as an avenue to build brand recognition and loyalty, so they invested in the
fountain equipment and cups that were used to serve their products at these outlets. As a result,
while Coke and Pepsi gained only 5% margins, fast food chains made75% gross margin on fountain
drinks. Vending, meanwhile, was the most profitable channel for the soft drink industry. Essentially
there were no buyers to bargain with at these locations, where Coke and Pepsi bottlers could sell
directly to consumers through machines owned by bottlers. Property owners were paid a sales
commission on Coke and Pepsi products sold through machines on their property, so their incentives
were properly aligned with those of the soft drink makers, and prices remained high. The customer
in this case was the consumer, who was generally limited on thirst quenching alternatives. The final
channel to consider is convenience stores and gas stations. If Mobil or Seven–Eleven were to
negotiate on behalf of its stations, it would be able to exert significant buyer

Porter 's Five Force Competition Analysis
Porter's five force competition analysis
Michael Porter developed the five force competition which is applicable to all the industries across
the globe. This model assumes that there are five forces that determine the competition facing an
industry. The tool is powerful in understanding where competition lies in current industry situation.
The model below describes the five force competition. The carbonated soft drink industry is highly
competitive in all countries with Coca–Cola and Pepsi having almost 70% market share of the
world. The quickly developing nature of the Chinese carbonated soft drinks market has given the
aggressive scene a significant help. All areas developed somewhere around 1999 and 2003, and
despite the fact that development in a few segments is backing off, especially in the carbonates area,
there are a considerable measure of chances for organizations to help their pieces of the pie by
spreading into developing areas. The five force competition model enables us to analyze the
competition faced by the industry in a market.
Threat of new entrants: The soft drink industry is highly competitive. The barrier to entry is
relatively low for a new comer with a single beverage but the established players like Coca–Cola
and China, who with their experience have achieved economies of scale. Huge capital investments
are required to create a brand awareness among the consumers, though the process of bottling,
distribution and storage could be outsourced. The

The Iraqi war for instance could show the positive aspect of the EU soft power that overcame the
US in fighting terrorism. However, EU soft power if facing many challenges due to economic and
military powers that transferred the EU into a neutral and weak security actor that cannot play an
influential role in the conflicts. This weak presence of the EU soft power can be realised in the
Afghanistan conflict and Ukraine crisis. Another reason for the weakness of EU's soft power is the
fact that the formation of the EU based more on economic reasons rather than political values. It is
true that the EU through its communities as the European Political Cooperation ( EPC) has
strengthen its foreign policy, but it was only after the Cold War and the setup of European Security
and Defense Policy (ESDP) when the EU's foreign policy has really become influential and a
resource of its soft power. Although that the EU has been strongly presented in some international
conflicts as the Ache/Indonesian conflict in 2005, it did not gain any political presence as a powerful
actor. This weak presence of the EU soft power can be realised in the Afghanistan conflict and
Ukraine crisis. During the Afghanistan conflict, EU faced the challenge of how to make changes and
to appear as a powerful actor that can lead as the US.

Soft Power By Joseph Nye
Soft power is a term introduced by Joseph Nye a decade ago addressing the means and tools that
nation use to obtain dominance in the political field avoiding using any military action "hard
powers". In other words, soft powers are the level of attractiveness a nation has over other nations
and the tools that enable this nation to shape the political agendas and political decisions of others in
its favor.
The concept of 'soft power', coined by Joseph S. Nye several years ago (Nye, 2004) highlighted that,
in addition to economic and military power, a third component of power – soft power – 'rests on the
ability to shape the preferences of others (Nye, 2004:5). More than merely influence, 'soft power' in
his definition "is the ability to attract" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But the main point of critique and disapproval is that the 'Bush administration needs to recognize
that the elite Arab public can speak for itself. It deeply resents being condescended to and ignored.
Only by treating Arabs and Muslims as equals, listening carefully and identifying points of
convergence without minimizing points of disagreement, will a positive message get through'.38
True dialogue, rather than mere one–way communication, is therefore seen as the essential starting
point to fix the US's serious – but probably not yet fatal – image problem around the world. With the
United States having de facto responsibility for the economic and political transformation of Iraq,
public diplomacy may only be effective when the basic rules of marketing are followed, in particular
that the 'product matches up to the

A Common Trope Within International Relations That Is Often
A common trope within international relations that is often discussed by analysts and average
individuals alike, is the "inevitable" decline of American power. Delving into this trope in his book,
IS THE AMERICAN CENTURY OVER?, Joseph S. NYE, JR, argues that the period of American
pre–eminence in military, economic, and soft power resources is not over (116). In structuring his
argument, Nye first analyzes Europe, Japan, Brazil, and India and their potential role in challenging
America's ability to maintain an international order. Then, Nye turns his attention towards China,
and comparatively analyzes its military, economic, and soft power to that of the United States.
Conversely, Nye explores potential American responses to China's ... Show more content on

Within these terms, Nye contextualizes his argument. For example, Nye explains that though
China's economic and military power allow it to be a more of a potent threat than other challenger, it
has a host of domestic issues, ranging from an underdeveloped countryside to rapid industrialization
(50). Even if China were to overcome its domestic problems, which would translate to an increase in
Chinese economic power, a preponderant role for China in the world economy would not equate to a
Chinese hegemony. It's political and military actions would still have to account for the United
States.
Through dissecting how any economic advantage China has over America is negligible, as it comes
at a price for it as well, Nye makes the argument that interdependence constrains China into working
with America in maintaining the international order, rather than working against it. As the United
States derives power from the dollar, much has been said about China's massive holding of dollars,
and how it could potentially use it as a bargaining chip in its relationship with the United States.
However, Nye claims that in the interdependent relationship between the nations, power depends on
asymmetries in interdependence (54). Thus, if China were to dump its dollars on world financial
markets, it could bring America to its knees, but it would also bring

Soft Power In Japan And The Soft Power Of Japan
The soft power is increasingly important in the international relations. It can improve the influence
of a country and indirectly his economic and political power. The culture in all his manifestations,
history, tradition and social customs form his base. Japan, with his culture, has a solid base on which
soft power can be built. The main objective of the cultural diplomacy is to improve the image and
prestige of a nation through aspects of the culture like the fine arts and the scenic arts, languages
teaching and the intellectual traditions.
About this, the Japanese diplomacy has evolved across several stages, creating its own Soft Power
based, basically in export the culture around the world. During the 1950s and early 1960s, the goal

economic development, the Japan government's efforts in promotion focused especially on the study
of the Japanese economy. About the initiatives in this field, it was the establishment of the Tanaka

The decade of 1970 brought another change in the cultural diplomacy of Japan, this time in response

The next stage in the evolution of Japan's cultural diplomacy began in the late 1980s. The Japanese

The Increasing Weight Of The Union
The increasing weight of the Union since its creation in 1951 has elevated the community to the
international stage as an indubitable power and encouraged the debate about the characterization of
the EU, fostered by the involvement from European political science scholars. Scholars have came
up with a "sui generis" definition of the EU in the sense that it neither is an intergovernmental
organization nor a federal state.4 Still, the novelty of the Union does not bound itself to the
definition of the nature of European institutional set–up. Indeed, the discussion between scholars
goes further towards the characterization of the European power.
To understand Manner 's theory, let us first have a look at its inspirations. The concept of civilian
power (CP) was mostly developed by F.Duchêne in 1973. He defined it as "a civilian group long on
economic power and relatively short on armed forces".5 This concept can be said to be the basis of
Manners ' NPE theory. Moravcsik deepened F.Duchêne 's definition arguing that the EU's CP «does
not lie in the deployment of battalions or bomber, but rather in the quiet promotion of democracy
and development through trade, foreign aid and peacekeeping». 6 In a word, both definitions imply
that CP privileges means others than military ones in its foreign policy. As a matter of fact, the
civilian conceptualization of Europe puts the emphasis on negociacion, multilateralism, economic
instruments and diplomacy rather than privileging a

final section is used to discuss the ethics, social responsibility and sustainability issues of PepsiCo
Inc.
I. Situation Analysis
PepsiCo Inc. is an American multinational corporation that manufactures, markets, and distributes
grain–based snack foods, beverages, and other products. Of all the products sold by PepsiCo Inc.,
Pepsi is one of the most representative and well–known brands and therefore is selected for the
analysis, (Bryson York Emily, 2012).
Internal Analysis – Power of Supplier
The primary objective for every enterprise is to maximise profit. According to the accounting
equation, profit is obtained by subtracting expenses from the revenue. Thus, the analysis of power of
supplier is essential as it directly influences the level of expense that a corporation faces. To
understand the power of supplier, it is a good approach to first learning the components that
manufacture the product sold, and then studying the market structure of each component as the
prices are largely influenced by market structure.
The materials used in Pepsi production are (1) cola and (2) can/bottle. Material suppliers for the soft
drink industry do not hold much power as the markets of these materials are competitive. The
ingredient of cola consists primarily of carbonated water, sugar, and flavourings, (Mitchell, Alan J.,

. Pepsi's and Coke Cola's Dominant Economic Characteristics.
These two–company's economic characteristic include their market size and growth rate from the
early 2000's to 2010. Coke and Pepsi have struggled for years in the carbonated and non–alcoholic
sector. According to Barbara Murray (2006c) "But as the pop fight has topped out, the industry 's
giants have begun relying on new product flavors and looking to noncarbonated beverages for
growth." (Murry, 2006). For instance, Coke boasts in the advertisement as the king of the soft drink;
as a consumer of both products, I agree. About 15 years ago, I was selected to participate in a
critiquing of Coke and Pepsi products. Additionally, my travel to Africa in 2007 and 2010 provided
the same raving review for the Coke Cola products. Apparently, Coke and Pepsi have been rivals for
ages locally, regionally, nationally, multinational, and globally, therefore, one expects them to have
an on–going rivalry when marketing the high–energy beverages. The Coca–Cola Company leads the
world in manufacturing, marketing and distributing soft drinks. The company is styled as
unstoppable due to its universal appeal ranging from Minute Maid orange juice, Dasani purified
water to PowerAde sports drinks and Fuze vitamin–enhanced water. Indeed, despite the fact that
Coca–Cola has ruled the drink market for the twenty years, however, "the soft–drink giant is
struggling as per–capita consumption of soda has hit multi–decade lows."

The Paradox Of American Power Summary
Paradox of American Power Reflection The analytical text "The Paradox of American Power,"
written by Joseph S. Nye was quite a fascinating read, as it analyzes the reasons behind why the
U.S. has become a worldwide leader and is able to maintain its position as a leader. In addition Nye
writes about "hard" and "soft" powers as one of the main reasons why the U.S. is able to hold its
position as a world leader, and describes it as a major factor in determining whether or not other
countries, such as Russia and China, have the ability to emerge as global superpowers. Throughout
the book, Nye teaches the readers about the "Game of Politics," describing unilateral and
multilateral approaches to problems, and why the U.S. should initiate more cooperative relations
with the other countries of the world in an analytical objective manner; even with its faults, it
manages to convey this message in a way that gives its many of its strong points. To the average
person, one may choose to believe that politics is simply a matter of affairs that the government
handles, however, in "The Paradox of American Power", politics is a game where every country
tactfully and adroitly attempts to gain influence over one another. Some countries are quite
successful in this venture and emerge as one of the world's leading superpowers, with other
countries attempting to reach that niche as well. Nye states that "Governments compete with each
other and with other organizations to enhance their own credibility and weaken that of their
opponents... (Nye 68)." Here Nye is saying that the game of politics is one of subterfuge and tactics
in an attempt to come out on top. In agreement, I believe that Nye's view on the game of politics is
one that the U.S. has played quite well in order to come out on top, however, if the U.S. does not
increase relations with other countries, it will not expect to stay as the top superpower for long. One
of the strongest suits that "The Paradox of American Power" has to offer is its objective, unbiased
analysis of candidate superpower countries and the factors that allow them to qualify as potential
superpowers. This objective analysis is what allows the reader to analyze Nye's breakdown of what
factors allow

Joseph Nye's Conception Of Soft Power In The United States
A realist's view of the world is based on the idea of an anarchic global structure, where there is no
higher power or authority above that of the states. Such a person sees the world as having competing
power bases, maintaining individual states' interests through the exercise of power. The primary
concern is survival and this is accomplished by leveraging power. It is "the realist's conception of
power that has come to shape mainstream accounts of world politics." Based on this view, in
simplified terms, one might say that only through force can power be achieved. And one might
assume that such force must be physical, coercive, or military in nature.
However, Joseph Nye asserts that soft power, or the "ability to affect others through the co–optive
means of framing the agenda, persuading, and eliciting positive attraction in order to obtain
preferred outcomes," can be wielded in order to reach goals in international relations. Exerting one
state's soft power involves utilizing non–material forms of power, such as the "attractiveness" of a
culture, political idea, or policy in order to shape the wants or goals of another state. A common
sense approach is to see that not only hard power (force), but soft power (persuasion or attraction)

What Is The Failure Of Soft Power
Failure of Softer Power The history of the Soviet Union's actions shows the slow erosion of the
state's soft power. Post–World War Two, the Soviet state had a great deal of soft power. Part of the
reason was that many prominent communists had led the resistance against fascism, and many
people believed that communism was the way of the future (who caused the cold war to end).
However, the first undercut came with de–Stalinization in 1956 with exposure of Stalin's crimes–
the Great Terror, hard labor camps, and purges. Importantly, de–Stalinization came at the same time
the Soviet government took repressive actions against the Hungarian Revolution, which was

Cola Wars Continue: Coke and Pepsi in 2010

1. Historically, why has the soft drink industry been so profitable?
Historically, the soft carbonated soft drink (CSD) industry has been valued at $74 billion in the
United States. In order to understand the reasons why the industry has been hugely profitable despite
the 'Cola Wars', an examination of the CSD industry with Porter's five forces analysis will be
conducted. As market leaders, the analysis will be centred on both Coke and Pepsi (hereafter
"C&P").
Threat of new competition: Barriers to entry in the CSD industry are extremely high and there are
various factors to support this. Firstly, both C&P spend gargantuan amounts of funding of ...

The reason for this difference is predominantly due to Master Bottler Contracts established to allow
for a certain level of "price fixing" on the concentrate producers' part. Additionally, as mentioned
previously, raw materials for concentrate producers are abundant and homogenous; hence COGS for
them will be significantly lower. Also, the bottler is in charge of selling and delivery, and hence
incurs an 18% selling and delivery expense while there is no such expense on the concentrate
producer's part. These reasons explain why the concentrate business has a more profitable business
model than the bottling business. 3. How has the growing popularity of non–carbonated soft drinks
influenced the industry?
Non–carbonated soft drinks have been gaining popularity in the past decade, increasing from 13% in
2000 to 17% in 2009. This growing popularity has resulted in the generation of both local and global
strategies by CSD firms unwilling to lose out on the budding market. In order to capitalize on the
opportunity, both C&P greatly expanded their lines of beverages to include sports drinks like
Gatorade and tea–based drinks like Lipton. Majority of drinks introduced during this time were
non–CSDs. Besides creating new products, Coke also aggressively gained market share through
acquisitions and extending their fountain services to include coffee and tea.

Joseph Nye offers an alternative theory for the construct of State power. He created a system in
which State power is broken into two parts; "hard power" and "soft power." "Hard power" consists
of the traditional, tangible aspects of power namely, military and economic power. "Soft power" is
the key distinguishing dynamic of Nye's work from other theories. "Soft power" consists of all other
facets of power, such as ideology, foreign policy, culture, stability, prosperity, and membership in
international organizations (Bound to Lead 130 and Paradox xi, 8). The modern world is becoming
more interconnected and interdependent with one another, hence depending less on "sticks and
carrots" and more on "soft power." The missing link within perceived State power is the role
morality plays in actual power. This study will show that "soft power" is implicitly, and at rare times
explicitly, founded in moral values. The definition of morality or what constitutes proper morals is a
difficult task and may be explained differently 100 times if one were to ask 100 people. Generally
speaking, being moral is conforming to the standards of good or right. This vague definition is open
for many interpretations. As mentioned, morality is not recognized internationally or is scrutinized
as a weakness by the realist community, at least not openly so. Morality has played a role in
international affairs and war for centuries.

Power In International Relations Essay
What is Power? It is no dispute that international relations, in both contemporary times and the past,
has always been characterized by power. Relationships between states are usually characterized by
one state having power over the other. In reality, the international playing field is characterized by a
hierarchy of states, their place in the order depending on the amount of power they possess.
Although the existence of power as a central concept in international relations is universally
accepted, how power is defined is the subject of many debates. Because there is a multiplicity of
perspectives to be used in looking at international relations – such as realism, liberalism,
constructivism, and rationalism, among many others – the views on power can be numerous. Some
of the more widely held definitions of power are that it is the ability to control natural resources.
Others would argue that it is a state's ability to control other states. Moreover, some others would
claim that power is the capacity to control outcomes in the international sphere. Of course, the
perspective or theory that one would subscribe to has a great influence on how one sees the world.
This is because "isms", or theories, are lenses to which a scholar could use to view the world,
including international relations, and explain its processes and the outcomes of these processes.
Hence, like in any other subject, the philosophy taken by an individual has a strong defining

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Chinese Soft Power
The Strengths behind the Chinese successes:
China's rise did not start anywhere outside. China has started to develop itself since 1978. At that
time it contributed only 1% of world's economy. Nowadays China is a big economic giant that is
contributing more than 7% of world's economy. Researchers are guessed that by 2025 China's
contribution to world economy will increase to 20%. With the growing influence, China became the
second largest trade partner of EU and USA. China is producing and exporting so many goods to
EU and US. In 2010, China stood second when it came to export in EU. Relation between China and
EU is continuously developing. Many European countries are much dependent on China for so
many goods.
So many Chinese companies are currently operational all over the world with go–global strategy.

In the later part of the essay, I will talk about the different forms of Chinese soft power that has
shaped China to come to its current position.
Confucius Institute:
One of the important mediums of Chinese soft power is its Confucius institute. Chinese government
is actively funding Confucius Institutes to educate people from other courtiers about China. It's an
initiative of Chinese government in collaboration with foreign universities and educational
institutions to promote Chinese culture and language. The first Confucius institute was established
in Seoul in 2004. Currently there are around 353 Confucius institutes and 473 Confucius classrooms
around the world.
Nowadays, many more countries and universities in particular are requesting Chinese government to
open Confucius institute. This clearly shows the influence of China is spreading all over the world
through its cultural soft power.

The Level Of Competition In The Soft Drinks Industry
The level of competition in an industry determines the number of profits made by players in the
industry. An industry with a high level of profits is likely to attract many players which erode the
profits made by firms gradually. A firm seeking to venture into a new industry should evaluate the
level of profits in an industry as well as how intense competition is in the industry before making a
move. Porter's five forces model provides a comprehensive framework that can be used to evaluate
how intense the competition is in the industry. The soft drinks industry is an industry that is very
profitable but also exhibits cut throat competition. Coca–Cola and Pepsi companies are the players
with much dominance in the soft drinks industry. This paper explores the competition between
Coca–Cola and Pepsi companies dubbed cola wars in the context of Porter's five forces model.
Threat of New Entrants (Low) This force analyzes the ease or difficulty of a new player entering an
industry. Industries that are profitable but have minimal barriers to entry attract many players who
make the profits to plummet. Profits decrease when a large number of firms compete for a limited
market share (Hill & Jones, 2010). Therefore, existing players, particularly in a profitable industry,
should create extensive barriers to entry to deter new firms from entering the industry. Coca–Cola
and Pepsi companies are the dominant players in the soft drinks industry (Yoffie, 2011). The two

USAWC Theater Strategy and Campaigning – The Role of Landpower in the Achievement of
National Strategic Objectives in the JIIM Environment
"This nation takes action in the international arena aimed at influencing human activity and the
environments in which that activity occurs. It could not be otherwise, as all institutions – states,
corporations, NGOs, etc. – are populated, controlled, and directed by people. Influencing these
people – be they heads of state, tribal elders, militaries and their leaders or even an entire population
– remains essential to securing U.S. interests.
All elements of national power have an important role in these interactions with other nations and
peoples."
Strategic Landpower White Paper (2013) This statement at a glance gives the reader insight into
why landpower is so important to the nation's defense. Landpower functions in concert with the
whole of government; which make United States(US) policies and alliances more effective than they
would be if they were employed in isolation. This paper will analyze the role of Landpower in the
achievement of national strategic objectives in peace, conflict, and war, and discuss the relevant
interdependencies of the domains of conflict as they relate to the application of Landpower
anywhere in the world. This paper will also highlight the unique role of Landpower in a Joint,

Relationship Between The United States And The People's...
The relationship between the United States and the People's Republic of China is perhaps the most
important bilateral tie shaping the future of the world. China's economy for the past 20 years has
been riding a phenomenal wave of growth surging to become the world's second largest economic
power. This prospering economy has additionally generated the necessary resources for China to
rapidly strengthen and modernize its military and capabilities. These additional resources and

According to President Obama in the 2015 National Security Strategy, the scope of our cooperation
with China is unprecedented, even as we remain alert to China's military modernization. The
evolving security environment in the PACOM area of responsibility is initiating the shift of our
focus and forces to the Indo–Asia–Pacific region. Over the next 5 years, nearly half of all growth
outside the United States is expected to come from Asia, and as reported by Global Trends 2030,
China will contribute about one–third of global growth by 2025, far more than any other country.
This growth is vital to United States economic and security interests, and China's activities in this
region will likely shape much of our nation's future; however, recent trends may prove establishing a
peaceful long–term relationship challenging. Admiral Locklear stated before the House
Appropriations Committee–Defense Subcommittee on PACOM Posture in March 2015 that recent
statements by senior Chinese leaders, such as President Xi Jinping, suggest that China may be
attempting to advance a vision for an alternative security architecture in Asia that affords Beijing
increased influence in the region and diminishes the role of the United States. This is exhibited in

According to the Cola Wars case, a bottling plant could cost as much as 75 million dollars and
"Coke and Pepsi each required close to 100 plants to provide effective nationwide distribution."
(Yoffie, 3). Additionally, Coke and Pepsi have deals with many distribution channels; such as
cooperative merchandising agreements and franchise agreements with their bottlers that forbids the
bottlers from carrying "directly competing brands." (Yoffie, 3). These agreements limited the ability
of new entrants to utilize the distribution channels that would make them successful in the industry.
Lastly, Coke, Pepsi and Cadburry Schwepps claimed about 89.3 percent of the soft drink industry,
with Coke and Pepsi accounting for the majority. The ability of a new entrant to wedge itself
between these highly established branded firms and their loyal consumers is nearly impossible.
Likewise, brand loyalty to the major firms in the ready–to–eat cereal industry was strong as these
companies alone accounted for 59% percent of the industries' sales by volume in 1993 and for about
86 percent of market shares in the industry. (Corts, 2). Also similar to the carbonated soft drink

Soft Power Without Hard Power Is No Power.
Soft power without hard power is no power. In the early 1990s, Joseph Nye's book Bound to Lead:
The Changing Nature Of American Power ignited a huge discussion among society of the need to
transition from America's traditional use of hard power to something more benign which he termed
soft power. Before looking at the two branches of power, we first define power as the ability to do
something or act in a certain way. As Nye had pointed out, nations can wield power in two forms,
soft and hard power. Soft power, as coined by Nye (1990) is defined as "the ability to get what you
want through attraction rather than through coercion." In contrast, hard power is seen as the use of
military might or economic sanctions to coerce others into doing ... Show more content on

Being able to perceive the nature and its ambiguous relationship with hard power is crucial in this
new changing age where a country's respectability and image is transient. Knowing how it works

national strategies and better forecast the effects of its use. We will start to see the rise of soft power
that in fact is more reflective of hard power. 997 words References: Bially Mattern, Janice. 2005.

Power Transition
Soft power is important in today's world because it essentially influences beliefs on one's behalf.
Convincing people to want what you want, instead of forcing them or coercion them holds a huge
advantage. The use of force and intimidation and coercion will ultimately lead to negative power.
The use of soft power leads to positive power, where both sides win. Today, the growth of Asia will
heavily influence the power of the world, and is shaped by their beliefs. As Dr. Nye states in the
video, power today is not just winning wars, its about whose story wins and if China's power
spreads throughout Asia then ultimately power lies with them.
I agree with Dr. Nye's understanding and framing of "power transition".

Analysis Of Porter 's Five Forces Essay
Porter's Five Forces can be used to analyze the carbonated soft drink industry in the United States.
The first force is the threat of new entrants. Essentially, this is an analysis of the level of difficulty
and number of challenges for new businesses to enter the market. The second force is the threat of
substitutes. This is a detailed description of potential substitutes for the products in the industry. The
third force is the bargaining power of suppliers. This analysis shows the amount of power that
suppliers have over the businesses in the industry. The fourth force is the bargaining power of
buyers. This is a summary of the negotiating power of the buyers, and the power they have over the
business. The final force is the level of rivalry among the competitors. This is a measure of the
intensity of the rivalry between all competitors in the industry. Each of these factors influence the
industry. Assessing each force will help a business develop a successful business strategy.
Threat of New Entrants
The market for carbonated soft drinks is saturated with many brands. The top five are, Coca–Cola,
Diet Coke, Pepsi–Cola, Mountain Dew, and Dr. Pepper (Hartlaub, n.d.). Over 90% of the market is

Dependency Theory Of Soft Power
After the explanation of soft power information, how does the soft power penetrate the media

globalization take place, the ideas of globalization is about free flows of information, and cultural

The Pros And Cons Of European Soft Power
If we look at our world today and at our world seventy years ago we will observe many changes that
world has had. Technological progress, climatic change, increasing process of globalization, view
toward politics and international relations. A couple of years ago hard power was dominated in
conducting foreign policy and managing international relations. As years go on, old methods of
politics are becoming irrelevant, inapplicable and sometimes even dangerous. However, some states,
as the USA, still used to think that hard power is quite good mean of conducting politics, while
Europe is considered to be the incarnation of soft power.
The term 'soft power' was first implemented by Joseph S. Nye in 1990. Later he described 'soft
power' in his book 'Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics' as 'the ability to get what
you want through attraction rather than coercion or payments' (Nye, 2004).

Morrison, Bruce Vaughn, and William Kennedy; the evolution and rise of China's strength through
soft power were discussed. Beginning on Yiwei Wang's piece, its focus point aims at the redefining
of China from a hard power into a soft power by rebranding its international image to suit its goals.
(Wang, 2005) In the piece, China's difficulties in achieving a full rebranding began the piece, yet its
transformation has seen its return in success by going "from soft power to soft rise" with its
ambitions in achieving this power. Going into Thomas Lum, Wayne M. Morrison, and Bruce
Vaughn's piece, the means China had used to actually reach this point of soft power were discussed
especially focussing on its focus in Southeast Asia by conducting non–military inducements
including culture, diplomacy, foreign aid, trade, and investment throughout the region. Through
these non–military acts throughout the region, negative imagery previously associated with China
during the Mao era had begun to be forgotten, in order to think of China as their hero of sorts. (Lum,
Morrison, Vaughn, 2008) Lastly, through Kennedy's piece these goals are reiterated in both the
means China has been using to boost its soft power as well as the benefits of economic and
diplomatic gains through the success of their gains in soft power, as well as reiterating Nye's point in
the strengths achievable through successful soft power usage. (Kennedy, 2016)

What can we say about changes in the distribution of power resources in the coming decades?
Political leaders often use the term
"multipolarity"to imply the return to a balance among a number of states with roughly equal power
resources analogous to that of the nineteenth century. But this is not likely to be the situation at the
turn of the century, for in terms of power resources, all the potential challengers except the United
States are deficient in some respect. The Soviet Union lags economically,
China remains a less–developed country, Europe lacks political unity, and Japan is deficient both in
military power and in global ideological appeal. If economic reforms reverse Soviet decline, if Japan
develops a full–fledged nuclear and conventional military capability, or if Europe becomes
dramatically more unified, there may be a return to classical multipolarity in the century. But barring
such twenty–first changes, the United States is likely to retain a broader range of power resources–
military, economic, scientific, cultural, and ideological
–than other countries, and the Soviet Union may lose its superpower status.

The coming century may see continued

The Use Of Power In There Will Come Soft Rains By Ray...
Could you imagine a world where technology controlled everything? In Ray Bradbury's story
"There Will Come Soft Rains" there is one house left in the city of Allendale in California. This lone
house can do most functions properly all by itself without the help of a human. Even though there
aren't any humans left, the house still acts as if everything is normal. Sara Teasdale's poem "There
Will Come Soft Rains", shows that if mankind had disappeared, nature wouldn't be affected at all.
Out of all the poems Bradbury could have chosen, he picked this one because the story and poem
have a lot in common. The main theme of Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" is technology
has a lot of power, but it has its limits. "There Will Come Soft Rains" shows how technology can be
both helpful and destructive. In the story, Bradbury suggests that technology is destructive by
writing about a radioactive glow. "The house stood alone in a city if rubble and ashes. This was the
one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for
miles". (328) This evidence shows some kind of nuclear warfare caused mass destruction in the city.
On the other hand, Bradbury also shows how technology can be helpful. Bradbury mentions many
examples of how technology has affected everyday living. The following examples were mentioned
on page 328; "In the living room, the voice clock sang", "In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a
hissing sigh and ejected from its

Coke And Pepsi 's Effect On The Industry Competition
Over the last century, Coke and Pepsi have been waging war over the $74 billion carbonated soft
drink industry in the United States. The degree of this competition has changed over the last decade
as carbonated soft drink (CSD) consumption in America decreased to 46 gallons per year per person.
To investigate these changes and evaluate the reasons why the industry has been so successful over
the years, it is important to do an industry analysis looking at the different forces that affect both
Coke and Pepsi as well as the changes in these forces and their effects on the industry competition.
FORCE: Threat of Substitute Products Carbonated soft drinks have an abundance of substitute
products that can be consumed by their customers. These include other drinks such as water, tea,
beer, milk, coffee, juice, and sports drinks. With all these substitute drink options, most of which are
much cheaper than CSDs, it would be seem as though the soft–drink industry would have a lot of
heavy competition. Yet Americans continue to consume "more soda than any other beverage"
(Harvard 2). This is due to a couple of reasons, one of which is the very strong brand name loyalty
present in the soda industry. Consumers continue to come back to their favorite brands. Another
reason is that Coke and Pepsi have both made a strong push into the marketing of their own
alternative/substitute beverages which they use to protect themselves from competition. They each
own one of the two largest bottled

Power in the simplest term possible can be the process of being in control; that is being in control of
situations and taking charge. Power can also be defined as the process of an individual having
control over another individual or groups of individuals. According to Hays (2002), four important
things should be noted when defining power, the include; 1) Power can be understood with effects
2) Power has its attributes to an individual's behaviour. 3) Power is included with control,
domination. 4) Power can be unproductive in some cases; this is because some gain will others
don't; that is to say one individual may have more power that another. Furthermore, this goes to
show how power has various meaning, its effects of ones action on another, its relations with other
individuals in terms of behaviour and power over people in countries or states. Also, another
definition of power can be seen according to Boulding view; Boulding (1990) defines Power as a the
essence of potential for change. This change in itself being to achieve a common goal for groups of
individuals, political parties, states, nations and countries. In addition, Colin Hays (2002) describes
Terence Ball's definition of power as one of the most important concept which organises political
theory. This definition still shows the interrelation of power and politics and how each relays on the
other. Finally, According to Nye (2011), power can be defined in various ways by peoples choices

Introduction
Jones Soda Company was founded by Canadian ski instructor Peter van Stolk. The soft drink
company was not being sold alongside other larger reputed brands such as Coca Cola or Pepsi. The
soft drinks were sold in skateboard shops and tattoo parlors to consumers who were looking for a
drink that matched their lifestyle. Its unique style was evident by its use of bottles that resembled
classic beer bottles and by pricing higher than for regular soft drinks.

Disadvantages Of Soft Power
Soft power has attracted significant attention in public and scholarly debates on foreign affairs in
recent years. International relations, for some, is about power. It has been an expression of the fight
between civilizations throughout history. Nowadays, the debate, for both academics and
practitioners, is still actual. This is even furthermore asserted with the influence that European
power can have over the globe. It is not a state, and, therefore, it is utterly interesting to examine
that Europe can still have impact on world affairs without having that central state character. This
essay will argue about economic and political benefits and disadvantages from European Soft Power
and its efficiency in contemporary world. For the first time, the term 'soft power' has been
established by Joseph Nye in the late 1980s. Joseph Nye in his book Soft Power presented a
defenition of soft power as follows: 'A country may obtain the outcomes it wants in world politics
because other countries–admiring values, emulating its example, aspiring to its level of prosperity
and openness–want to follow it.'(p.5) It is now used frequently and often incorrectly by political
leaders, editorial writers, and academics around the world. So what is soft power? Soft power lies in
the ability to persuade and attract, whereas hard power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

American Soft Power
Reforms need to be implemented to transition the United States from a hard power reliant country to
a nation which uses both hard and soft power. At the moment, the U.S. focuses virtually all of its
resources on hard power, or military strength, which has led to its status as a superpower. Since no
tool is universally effective, sole dependency on hard power will inevitably cause difficulty, and
possibly defeat (Nye). After reading the article provided by College Board, Vanishing Voices, which
discusses the causes of minor languages disappearing, I contemplated how the loss of languages was
connected to the U.S. as a superpower. Subsequently, I thought about how American soft power
could cause unintentionally cause this loss of languages. To ... Show more content on

He explains that there was a large spike of European anti–American sentiment, and this hurt the US'
soft power since more people disliked America (Nye). Although the exact drop in soft power is not
quantified in the book, it's clear that since the British were invading out of their own interests, and
America impeded this, the influx in anti–Americanism was substantial. This event clearly illustrates
how a militaristic, or hard power based, operation can have repercussions that damage soft power. It,
also, shows how soft power can be harmed when opposing another country's action that is highly
supported by said country's people. Now, this isn't to imply the U.S. should cease all future overseas
military operations in order to please every party, this is fundamentally unattainable and unrealistic.
But, simply doing these highly impactful actions, with complete disregard for the future impacts is
needs to end, in order to preserve America's already declining soft power, which the following

Case Analysis Of Coke And Pepsi

  • 1. Case Analysis Of Coke And Pepsi Introduction: Coca Cola and Pepsi vied for "throat share" of the world's beverage market for over a century. The biggest battles of the cola wars were fought over the $60 billion industry in the U.S, where the average American consumed 53 gallons of carbonated soft drinks per years. In a carefully waged competitive struggle, from 1975 to 2000 both Coke and Pepsi achieved annual growth of around 10% as both U.S and worldwide carbonated soft drink consumption consistently rose. This cozy relationship was threatened in the late 1990's , however , when U.S carbonated soft drink consumption dropped for two consecutive years and worldwide shipments slowed for both Coke and Pepsi. In response both firms began to modify their bottling, pricing and brand strategies. They also looked to emerging international markets to fuel growth and broadened their brand portfolios to include non–carbonated beverages like tea, juice , sports drinks and bottled water. Supplier Power: In the carbonated soft drinks industry concentrate producers like Coke and Pepsi require a few inputs. The concentrate for most regular colas ... Coke and Pepsi responded by expanding their offerings, through alliances (e.g. Coke and Nestea), acquisitions (e.g. Coke and Minute Maid), and internal product innovation (e.g. Pepsi creating Orange Slice), capturing the value of increasingly popular substitutes internally. Proliferation in the number of brands did threaten the profitability of bottlers through 1986, as they more frequent line set–ups, increased capital investment, and development of special management skills for more complex manufacturing operations and distribution. Bottlers were able to overcome these operational challenges through consolidation to achieve economies of scale. Overall, because of the CPs efforts in diversification, however, substitutes became less of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Perils Of Soft Power By Josef Joffe The origins of American Pop have been spreading throughout the world like a wildfire. Many cultures and societies have chosen to adopt this style of living because it is so popular. American pop culture differs from other forms of culture in several significant ways due to the diversity in the world. Which is why American pop culture may be spreading out a negative effect on too these other cultures. The negative effect that the American pop culture is sending out is not only influencing others to follow their style but also showing other cultures in their media and shining a bad light on them. Due to this, many other cultures and societies have changed their views on American pop culture. American pop culture is widely known for their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "The Perils of Soft Power" by Josef Joffe, he states, "a number of American thinkers, led by Joseph S. Nye Jr. of Harvard, have argued that the United States should rely more on what he calls its "soft power" – the contagious appeal of its ideas, its culture and its way of life – and so rely less on the "hard power" of its stealth bombers and aircraft carriers. There is one problem with this argument: soft power does not necessarily increase the world's love for America. It is still power, and it can still make enemies.'' This claim is basically saying that America should focus more on making other cultures like them more and accept them more regardless of the many negative effects it has on them. But as the claim states, although having a more likable approach doesn't mean that acceptance will come right away. Joffe means that America should focus on the fact that even if they try this more approachable tactic, it could still end up with enemies all around the world. Joffe follows up on his previous point by stating, "There may be little or no relationship between America's ubiquity and its actual influence''. This means that while American pop culture is spreading throughout the world ad many people try to adapt to it, even Americans don't actually have the adaptation to their own culture. Many people are proud to show off the influence that they have gotten from American pop culture, but when people that actually live in America don't even have the same connection with their own culture, they end up looking foolish. America strives to spread their culture to other but they don't even follow their own rules. Bluntly this can be a form of hypocrisy, which is why America should focus on "soft ... • 5. Essay on Cola Wars Continued – Coke vs. Pepsi in 2006 Cola Wars Continued – Coke vs. Pepsi in 2006 Reading the case, special attention should be paid to the underlying economics of the soft drink industry and its relationship to average profits, the relationship between the different stages of the value chain in the industry, the relationship between competitive interaction and industry profits, and the impact of globalization on industry structure. While preparing the case, you should start by carefully characterizing the carbonated soft drink industry. To do this, clearly specify Coke and Pepsi's market in the value chain of the industry, their main suppliers and main buyers. Both concentrate producers (CP) and bottlers are profitable. These two parts of the industry are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The least profitable channel for soft drinks, however, was fountain sales. Profitability at these locations was so abysmal for Coke and Pepsi that they considered this channel "paid sampling." This was because buyers at major fast food chains only needed to stock the products of one manufacturer, so they could negotiate for optimal pricing. Coke and Pepsi found these channels important, however, as an avenue to build brand recognition and loyalty, so they invested in the fountain equipment and cups that were used to serve their products at these outlets. As a result, while Coke and Pepsi gained only 5% margins, fast food chains made75% gross margin on fountain drinks. Vending, meanwhile, was the most profitable channel for the soft drink industry. Essentially there were no buyers to bargain with at these locations, where Coke and Pepsi bottlers could sell directly to consumers through machines owned by bottlers. Property owners were paid a sales commission on Coke and Pepsi products sold through machines on their property, so their incentives were properly aligned with those of the soft drink makers, and prices remained high. The customer in this case was the consumer, who was generally limited on thirst quenching alternatives. The final channel to consider is convenience stores and gas stations. • 7. Porter 's Five Force Competition Analysis Porter's five force competition analysis Michael Porter developed the five force competition which is applicable to all the industries across the globe. This model assumes that there are five forces that determine the competition facing an industry. The tool is powerful in understanding where competition lies in current industry situation. The model below describes the five force competition. The carbonated soft drink industry is highly competitive in all countries with Coca–Cola and Pepsi having almost 70% market share of the world. The quickly developing nature of the Chinese carbonated soft drinks market has given the aggressive scene a significant help. All areas developed somewhere around 1999 and 2003, and despite the fact that development in a few segments is backing off, especially in the carbonates area, there are a considerable measure of chances for organizations to help their pieces of the pie by spreading into developing areas. The five force competition model enables us to analyze the competition faced by the industry in a market. Threat of new entrants: The soft drink industry is highly competitive. The barrier to entry is relatively low for a new comer with a single beverage but the established players like Coca–Cola and China, who with their experience have achieved economies of scale. Huge capital investments are required to create a brand awareness among the consumers, though the process of bottling, distribution and storage could be outsourced. The ... Therefore, soft power is indeed an important tool that China is trying to invest in in order to improve its image and recover from its unpopular policies, and to 1–Imbalance of soft–power resources: It is undoubtedly true, that one of the major challenges which China nowadays is facing in the making of foreign policy is the ability how to make its cultural products more attractive. The Iraqi war for instance could show the positive aspect of the EU soft power that overcame the US in fighting terrorism. However, EU soft power if facing many challenges due to economic and military powers that transferred the EU into a neutral and weak security actor that cannot play an influential role in the conflicts. This weak presence of the EU soft power can be realised in the Afghanistan conflict and Ukraine crisis. Another reason for the weakness of EU's soft power is the fact that the formation of the EU based more on economic reasons rather than political values. It is true that the EU through its communities as the European Political Cooperation ( EPC) has strengthen its foreign policy, but it was only after the Cold War and the setup of European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP) when the EU's foreign policy has really become influential and a resource of its soft power. • 11. Soft Power By Joseph Nye Soft power is a term introduced by Joseph Nye a decade ago addressing the means and tools that nation use to obtain dominance in the political field avoiding using any military action "hard powers". In other words, soft powers are the level of attractiveness a nation has over other nations and the tools that enable this nation to shape the political agendas and political decisions of others in its favor. The concept of 'soft power', coined by Joseph S. Nye several years ago (Nye, 2004) highlighted that, in addition to economic and military power, a third component of power – soft power – 'rests on the ability to shape the preferences of others (Nye, 2004:5). But the main point of critique and disapproval is that the 'Bush administration needs to recognize that the elite Arab public can speak for itself. It deeply resents being condescended to and ignored. Only by treating Arabs and Muslims as equals, listening carefully and identifying points of convergence without minimizing points of disagreement, will a positive message get through'.38 True dialogue, rather than mere one–way communication, is therefore seen as the essential starting point to fix the US's serious – but probably not yet fatal – image problem around the world. • 13. A Common Trope Within International Relations That Is Often A common trope within international relations that is often discussed by analysts and average individuals alike, is the "inevitable" decline of American power. Delving into this trope in his book, IS THE AMERICAN CENTURY OVER?, Joseph S. NYE, JR, argues that the period of American pre–eminence in military, economic, and soft power resources is not over (116). In structuring his argument, Nye first analyzes Europe, Japan, Brazil, and India and their potential role in challenging America's ability to maintain an international order. Then, Nye turns his attention towards China, and comparatively analyzes its military, economic, and soft power to that of the United States. Conversely, Nye explores potential American responses to China's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within these terms, Nye contextualizes his argument. For example, Nye explains that though China's economic and military power allow it to be a more of a potent threat than other challenger, it has a host of domestic issues, ranging from an underdeveloped countryside to rapid industrialization (50). Even if China were to overcome its domestic problems, which would translate to an increase in Chinese economic power, a preponderant role for China in the world economy would not equate to a Chinese hegemony. It's political and military actions would still have to account for the United States. Through dissecting how any economic advantage China has over America is negligible, as it comes at a price for it as well, Nye makes the argument that interdependence constrains China into working with America in maintaining the international order, rather than working against it. As the United States derives power from the dollar, much has been said about China's massive holding of dollars, and how it could potentially use it as a bargaining chip in its relationship with the United States. However, Nye claims that in the interdependent relationship between the nations, power depends on asymmetries in interdependence (54). The Increasing Weight Of The Union The increasing weight of the Union since its creation in 1951 has elevated the community to the international stage as an indubitable power and encouraged the debate about the characterization of the EU, fostered by the involvement from European political science scholars. Scholars have came up with a "sui generis" definition of the EU in the sense that it neither is an intergovernmental organization nor a federal state.4 Still, the novelty of the Union does not bound itself to the definition of the nature of European institutional set–up. Indeed, the discussion between scholars goes further towards the characterization of the European power. To understand Manner 's theory, let us first have a look at its inspirations. The concept of civilian power (CP) was mostly developed by F.Duchêne in 1973. He defined it as "a civilian group long on economic power and relatively short on armed forces".5 This concept can be said to be the basis of Manners ' NPE theory. Moravcsik deepened F.Duchêne 's definition arguing that the EU's CP «does not lie in the deployment of battalions or bomber, but rather in the quiet promotion of democracy and development through trade, foreign aid and peacekeeping». 6 In a word, both definitions imply that CP privileges means others than military ones in its foreign policy. As a matter of fact, the civilian conceptualization of Europe puts the emphasis on negociacion, multilateralism, economic instruments and diplomacy rather than privileging a ... Situation Analysis PepsiCo Inc. is an American multinational corporation that manufactures, markets, and distributes grain–based snack foods, beverages, and other products. Of all the products sold by PepsiCo Inc., Pepsi is one of the most representative and well–known brands and therefore is selected for the analysis, (Bryson York Emily, 2012). Internal Analysis – Power of Supplier The primary objective for every enterprise is to maximise profit. According to the accounting equation, profit is obtained by subtracting expenses from the revenue. Thus, the analysis of power of supplier is essential as it directly influences the level of expense that a corporation faces. To understand the power of supplier, it is a good approach to first learning the components that manufacture the product sold, and then studying the market structure of each component as the prices are largely influenced by market structure. The materials used in Pepsi production are (1) cola and (2) can/bottle. Material suppliers for the soft drink industry do not hold much power as the markets of these materials are competitive. The ingredient of cola consists primarily of carbonated water, sugar, and flavourings, (Mitchell, Alan J., ed, 1995). The price of these

  • 24. The Paradox Of American Power Summary Paradox of American Power Reflection The analytical text "The Paradox of American Power," written by Joseph S. Nye was quite a fascinating read, as it analyzes the reasons behind why the U.S. has become a worldwide leader and is able to maintain its position as a leader. In addition Nye writes about "hard" and "soft" powers as one of the main reasons why the U.S. is able to hold its position as a world leader, and describes it as a major factor in determining whether or not other countries, such as Russia and China, have the ability to emerge as global superpowers. Throughout the book, Nye teaches the readers about the "Game of Politics," describing unilateral and multilateral approaches to problems, and why the U.S. should initiate more cooperative relations with the other countries of the world in an analytical objective manner; even with its faults, it manages to convey this message in a way that gives its many of its strong points. To the average person, one may choose to believe that politics is simply a matter of affairs that the government handles, however, in "The Paradox of American Power", politics is a game where every country tactfully and adroitly attempts to gain influence over one another. Some countries are quite successful in this venture and emerge as one of the world's leading superpowers, with other countries attempting to reach that niche as well. Nye states that "Governments compete with each other and with other organizations to enhance their own credibility and weaken that of their opponents... (Nye 68)." Here Nye is saying that the game of politics is one of subterfuge and tactics in an attempt to come out on top. In agreement, I believe that Nye's view on the game of politics is one that the U.S. has played quite well in order to come out on top, however, if the U.S. does not increase relations with other countries, it will not expect to stay as the top superpower for long. One of the strongest suits that "The Paradox of American Power" has to offer is its objective, unbiased analysis of candidate superpower countries and the factors that allow them to qualify as potential superpowers. This objective analysis is what allows the reader to analyze Nye's breakdown of what factors allow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Joseph Nye's Conception Of Soft Power In The United States A realist's view of the world is based on the idea of an anarchic global structure, where there is no higher power or authority above that of the states. Such a person sees the world as having competing power bases, maintaining individual states' interests through the exercise of power. The primary concern is survival and this is accomplished by leveraging power. It is "the realist's conception of power that has come to shape mainstream accounts of world politics." Based on this view, in simplified terms, one might say that only through force can power be achieved. And one might assume that such force must be physical, coercive, or military in nature. However, Joseph Nye asserts that soft power, or the "ability to affect others through the co–optive means of framing the agenda, persuading, and eliciting positive attraction in order to obtain preferred outcomes," can be wielded in order to reach goals in international relations. Exerting one state's soft power involves utilizing non–material forms of power, such as the "attractiveness" of a culture, political idea, or policy in order to shape the wants or goals of another state. However, the first undercut came with de–Stalinization in 1956 with exposure of Stalin's crimes– the Great Terror, hard labor camps, and purges. Historically, the soft carbonated soft drink (CSD) industry has been valued at $74 billion in the United States. In order to understand the reasons why the industry has been hugely profitable despite the 'Cola Wars', an examination of the CSD industry with Porter's five forces analysis will be conducted. As market leaders, the analysis will be centred on both Coke and Pepsi (hereafter "C&P"). Threat of new competition: Barriers to entry in the CSD industry are extremely high and there are various factors to support this. Firstly, both C&P spend gargantuan amounts of funding of ... The reason for this difference is predominantly due to Master Bottler Contracts established to allow for a certain level of "price fixing" on the concentrate producers' part. Additionally, as mentioned previously, raw materials for concentrate producers are abundant and homogenous; hence COGS for them will be significantly lower. Also, the bottler is in charge of selling and delivery, and hence incurs an 18% selling and delivery expense while there is no such expense on the concentrate producer's part. These reasons explain why the concentrate business has a more profitable business model than the bottling business. 3. How has the growing popularity of non–carbonated soft drinks influenced the industry? Non–carbonated soft drinks have been gaining popularity in the past decade, increasing from 13% in 2000 to 17% in 2009. This growing popularity has resulted in the generation of both local and global strategies by CSD firms unwilling to lose out on the budding market. In order to capitalize on the opportunity, both C&P greatly expanded their lines of beverages to include sports drinks like Gatorade and tea–based drinks like Lipton. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Joseph Nye offers an alternative theory for the construct of State power. He created a system in which State power is broken into two parts; "hard power" and "soft power." "Hard power" consists of the traditional, tangible aspects of power namely, military and economic power. "Soft power" is the key distinguishing dynamic of Nye's work from other theories. "Soft power" consists of all other facets of power, such as ideology, foreign policy, culture, stability, prosperity, and membership in international organizations (Bound to Lead 130 and Paradox xi, 8). The modern world is becoming more interconnected and interdependent with one another, hence depending less on "sticks and carrots" and more on "soft power." The missing link within perceived State power is the role morality plays in actual power. This study will show that "soft power" is implicitly, and at rare times explicitly, founded in moral values. The definition of morality or what constitutes proper morals is a difficult task and may be explained differently 100 times if one were to ask 100 people. Generally speaking, being moral is conforming to the standards of good or right. This vague definition is open for many interpretations. • 36. Power In International Relations Essay What is Power? It is no dispute that international relations, in both contemporary times and the past, has always been characterized by power. Relationships between states are usually characterized by one state having power over the other. In reality, the international playing field is characterized by a hierarchy of states, their place in the order depending on the amount of power they possess. Although the existence of power as a central concept in international relations is universally accepted, how power is defined is the subject of many debates. Because there is a multiplicity of perspectives to be used in looking at international relations – such as realism, liberalism, constructivism, and rationalism, among many others – the views on power can be numerous. Some of the more widely held definitions of power are that it is the ability to control natural resources. Others would argue that it is a state's ability to control other states. Moreover, some others would claim that power is the capacity to control outcomes in the international sphere. Of course, the perspective or theory that one would subscribe to has a great influence on how one sees the world. This is because "isms", or theories, are lenses to which a scholar could use to view the world, including international relations, and explain its processes and the outcomes of these processes. Hence, like in any other subject, the philosophy taken by an individual has a strong defining influence on the person's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An industry with a high level of profits is likely to attract many players which erode the profits made by firms gradually. A firm seeking to venture into a new industry should evaluate the level of profits in an industry as well as how intense competition is in the industry before making a move. Porter's five forces model provides a comprehensive framework that can be used to evaluate how intense the competition is in the industry. In the early 1990s, Joseph Nye's book Bound to Lead: The Changing Nature Of American Power ignited a huge discussion among society of the need to transition from America's traditional use of hard power to something more benign which he termed soft power. Before looking at the two branches of power, we first define power as the ability to do something or act in a certain way. As Nye had pointed out, nations can wield power in two forms, soft and hard power. The top five are, Coca–Cola, Diet Coke, Pepsi–Cola, Mountain Dew, and Dr. Pepper (Hartlaub, n.d.). Over 90% of the market is dominated by three companies, Coca–Cola, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper/Snapple (Statista, 2015) Because the soft drink industry manufactures its products in mass amounts, they can produce economies of scale and create a competitive advantage over smaller or new companies trying to ... Technological progress, climatic change, increasing process of globalization, view toward politics and international relations. A couple of years ago hard power was dominated in conducting foreign policy and managing international relations. As years go on, old methods of politics are becoming irrelevant, inapplicable and sometimes even dangerous. However, some states, as the USA, still used to think that hard power is quite good mean of conducting politics, while Europe is considered to be the incarnation of soft power. The term 'soft power' was first implemented by Joseph S. Nye in 1990. Later he described 'soft power' in his book 'Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics' as 'the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than coercion or payments' (Nye, 2004). Although term 'soft power' was implemented only two decades ago, clear examples of it were observed earlier. For instance, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the years passed, what was strived for had changed, yet the goal of it continued to remain the same; to be the strongest. While some nations continue on the path of brute force, also known as hard power, an idea coined by Joseph Nye through the power of soft power. Beginning on Yiwei Wang's piece, its focus point aims at the redefining of China from a hard power into a soft power by rebranding its international image to suit its goals. (Wang, 2005) In the piece, China's difficulties in achieving a full rebranding began the piece, yet its transformation has seen its return in success by going "from soft power to soft rise" with its ambitions in achieving this power. Going into Thomas Lum, Wayne M. Morrison, and Bruce Vaughn's piece, the means China had used to actually reach this point of soft power were discussed especially focussing on its focus in Southeast Asia by conducting non–military inducements including culture, diplomacy, foreign aid, trade, and investment throughout the region. Through these non–military acts throughout the region, negative imagery previously associated with China during the Mao era had begun to be forgotten, in order to think of China as their hero of sorts. (Lum, Morrison, Vaughn, 2008) Lastly, through Kennedy's piece these goals are reiterated in both the means China has been using to boost its soft power as well as the benefits of economic and diplomatic gains through the success of their gains in soft power, as well as reiterating Nye's point in the strengths achievable through successful soft power usage. Political leaders often use the term "multipolarity"to imply the return to a balance among a number of states with roughly equal power resources analogous to that of the nineteenth century. But this is not likely to be the situation at the turn of the century, for in terms of power resources, all the potential challengers except the United States are deficient in some respect. The Soviet Union lags economically, China remains a less–developed country, Europe lacks political unity, and Japan is deficient both in military power and in global ideological appeal. If economic reforms reverse Soviet decline, if Japan develops a full–fledged nuclear and conventional military capability, or if Europe becomes dramatically more unified, there may be a return to classical multipolarity in the century. But barring such twenty–first changes, the United States is likely to retain a broader range of power resources– military, economic, scientific, cultural, and ideological –than other countries, and the Soviet Union may lose its superpower status. TheGreatPowerShift The coming century may see continued American preeminence, but the sources of power in world politics are likely to undergo major changes that will create new difficulties for all countries in achieving their goals. • 65. The Use Of Power In There Will Come Soft Rains By Ray... Could you imagine a world where technology controlled everything? In Ray Bradbury's story "There Will Come Soft Rains" there is one house left in the city of Allendale in California. This lone house can do most functions properly all by itself without the help of a human. Even though there aren't any humans left, the house still acts as if everything is normal. Sara Teasdale's poem "There Will Come Soft Rains", shows that if mankind had disappeared, nature wouldn't be affected at all. Out of all the poems Bradbury could have chosen, he picked this one because the story and poem have a lot in common. The main theme of Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" is technology has a lot of power, but it has its limits. "There Will Come Soft Rains" shows how technology can be both helpful and destructive. In the story, Bradbury suggests that technology is destructive by writing about a radioactive glow. "The house stood alone in a city if rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles". (328) This evidence shows some kind of nuclear warfare caused mass destruction in the city. On the other hand, Bradbury also shows how technology can be helpful. Bradbury mentions many examples of how technology has affected everyday living. The following examples were mentioned on page 328; "In the living room, the voice clock sang", "In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its ... • 67. Coke And Pepsi 's Effect On The Industry Competition Over the last century, Coke and Pepsi have been waging war over the $74 billion carbonated soft drink industry in the United States. The degree of this competition has changed over the last decade as carbonated soft drink (CSD) consumption in America decreased to 46 gallons per year per person. To investigate these changes and evaluate the reasons why the industry has been so successful over the years, it is important to do an industry analysis looking at the different forces that affect both Coke and Pepsi as well as the changes in these forces and their effects on the industry competition. FORCE: Threat of Substitute Products Carbonated soft drinks have an abundance of substitute products that can be consumed by their customers. These include other drinks such as water, tea, beer, milk, coffee, juice, and sports drinks. With all these substitute drink options, most of which are much cheaper than CSDs, it would be seem as though the soft–drink industry would have a lot of heavy competition. Yet Americans continue to consume "more soda than any other beverage" (Harvard 2). This is due to a couple of reasons, one of which is the very strong brand name loyalty present in the soda industry. Consumers continue to come back to their favorite brands. Another reason is that Coke and Pepsi have both made a strong push into the marketing of their own alternative/substitute beverages which they use to protect themselves from competition. Furthermore, this goes to show how power has various meaning, its effects of ones action on another, its relations with other individuals in terms of behaviour and power over people in countries or states. Also, another definition of power can be seen according to Boulding view; Boulding (1990) defines Power as a the essence of potential for change. This change in itself being to achieve a common goal for groups of individuals, political parties, states, nations and countries. In addition, Colin Hays (2002) describes Terence Ball's definition of power as one of the most important concept which organises political theory. • 75. Disadvantages Of Soft Power Soft power has attracted significant attention in public and scholarly debates on foreign affairs in recent years. International relations, for some, is about power. It has been an expression of the fight between civilizations throughout history. Nowadays, the debate, for both academics and practitioners, is still actual. This is even furthermore asserted with the influence that European power can have over the globe. It is not a state, and, therefore, it is utterly interesting to examine that Europe can still have impact on world affairs without having that central state character. This essay will argue about economic and political benefits and disadvantages from European Soft Power and its efficiency in contemporary world. For the first time, the term 'soft power' has been established by Joseph Nye in the late 1980s. Joseph Nye in his book Soft Power presented a defenition of soft power as follows: 'A country may obtain the outcomes it wants in world politics because other countries–admiring values, emulating its example, aspiring to its level of prosperity and openness–want to follow it.'(p.5) It is now used frequently and often incorrectly by political leaders, editorial writers, and academics around the world. At the moment, the U.S. focuses virtually all of its resources on hard power, or military strength, which has led to its status as a superpower. Since no tool is universally effective, sole dependency on hard power will inevitably cause difficulty, and possibly defeat (Nye). This event clearly illustrates how a militaristic, or hard power based, operation can have repercussions that damage soft power. It, also, shows how soft power can be harmed when opposing another country's action that is highly supported by said country's people.
