Themes of Loneliness and Solitude in The Samurai's Garden
I.Introduction:
A: Hook– Many view loneliness and solitude with distaste, why would someone want to be without
the company of others?
B: Bridge– Being alone and isolated is seen as dark and dismal. In Gail Tsukiyama's The Samurai's
Garden the main character, Stephen, is apprehensive as he travels to the village of Tarumi. He had
been there a few times before on vacation, but this would be the first time he had ever been without
the rest of his family. Over the next year, Stephen would be recovering from his tuberculosis in the
clear air of the village under the care of Matsu, his house's caretaker. Other than a few visits by his
father and letters from his family in Hong Kong, he would be alone with Matsu. He soon finds that
the isolation of Tarumi holds a quiet elegance and peacefulness.
C: Thesis– The characters in The Samurai's Garden find peace in loneliness, beauty in isolation, and
freedom from judgement through solitude.
II. Body
i. Sometimes, being lonely can help one to come to terms with the issues in their life. Without the
distractions of others, it becomes easier to grieve over a loss or to accept one's fate and move on.
ii. When summer drew to a close, the vacationing families left their refuse on the beach for Stephen
to walk among, alone with his thoughts. "I felt lonely seeing these things, not for

The Reasons Behind the Difficulties of Bringing Peace to...
The Reasons Behind the Difficulties of Bringing Peace to the Middle East
A major source of conflict in the Middle East during the last fifty years has been the dispute between
Arabs and Jews over Palestine. For hundreds of years, the great majority of the people living in
Palestine were Arabs. But at the end of the nineteenth century some Jews in Europe were becoming
increasingly bitter about growing anti–Semitism. They started to talk about setting up a state of their
own where they would be free from persecution. They chose Palestine because it was there
birthplace of the Jews religion.
Small numbers of these Jews, who were called Zionists, began to emigrate from Europe to Palestine.

Apart from the holy shrines and places of worship, the Arabs and Israelis are fighting over living
space. Since the creation of the Jewish state of Israel, Arabs have waged many wars on the new
territory. In every one of those wars, the Arabs lost or signed an armistice, sometimes even losing
more of their territory to the Israeli. Unfortunately because of all this, it is hard to imagine that there
were be a lasting peace between the Arab and Jew in the foresee.
The Muslims the "Al–Sakhra", or "The rock", is precious and holy as it is regarded as the departure
point for the prophet' s Muhammad's night journey, while for many Jews and Christians it is likely
site of Abraham sacrifice and of the holy of holies of the Jewish temple.
In the time of Jesus first century Ad Palestine was ruled by the Romans. In AD 70 and again in AD
135 the Jews rebelled against their Roman rulers. Roman soldiers crushed both revolt, destroyed the
city of Jerusalem and expelled the Jews. Many thousands fled to neighbouring countries and over
the next 200 years they settled in almost every part of the Roman Empire. Many became merchants,
sand farmers, bankers and crafts men.
Almost all Europeans were Christians and

Analysis Of ' The Slow Paced'spring Summer Winter Spring...
Few words are spoken in Kim Ki–duk's Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring. Yet much is
expressed regarding humankind's relationship with nature. The slow–paced, contemplative movie
explores key Buddhist principles, including rebirth and meditation, through the life of an apprentice
monk. Laden with heavy symbolism, as seen in the use of the seasons, animals, architecture,
medicine and punishment, the film deeply considers people's connection to their environment,
stressing in particular the importance of both inner and outer harmony. Seasons The seasons are
likely the most notable motif of the film, which progresses through them as they match the stages of
the Apprentice's life. As the once young man presumably returns towards the end to replace his old
master, the wheel of life turns again. The beautiful cinematography, featuring long shots of the
surrounding landscape, captures the breathtaking beauty of the area as the seasons change. By
enriching the movie with these scenes, rather than focusing on just the plot, Kim invites the viewer
to appreciate the setting's beauty, allowing time for reflection on both the story and the cyclical
tendencies of nature and life. Following the seasons through the Apprentice's life reflects a cycle of
rebirth that is an integral part of Buddhist teachings. Animals More subtly, animals also play a
significant role in each stage of the Apprentice's life. Like the seasons, one creature matches up with
the Apprentice during each phase

Just Post Bellum By Gary J. Bass
The intent of this review is to evaluate the concept of "Just Post Bellum" that the article 's author,
Gary J. Bass, developed through an empirical theoretical research about the doctrine of Just War.
The way the author adapts the evidence found in the speeches of former presidents such as George
W. Bush and Jimmy Carter makes us think he tends to justify somewhat recent interventions the
United States made in the Middle East when he says: "Both presidents explained that for a free state
a just war, must show not only that went to war for good reasons, but also that their conduct war was
consistent with that purpose: to help make the most stable region and safe, and leaving affected
populations less subject to violence and oppression." However, Gary J. Bass also provides
constructive criticism and compiles theoretical concepts of importance of various classical and
contemporary authors from the realistic–idealistic point of view of several events that promote an
understanding of clear concepts of Just War and their relevance in the context of a globalized world.
The author refutes the conventional perception that "Political leaders often invoke postwar evolution
as bringing democracy or stability as part of justifying or condemning a war," (P. 384), when in
reality other standards of postwar evolution exist.
In this article, the author wants to prove his thesis about the theory of Just War, in the concept of
"Jus Post Bellum," in that it should be applied correctly by the

Conuncianitarianism And Confucianism
Confucianism does not explicitly encourage war given its emphasis on humanity. This combination
of moral vision and political realism combined with his advocacy of strong political authorities that
nevertheless rule justly in service of the common good. Xunzi's vision of the good society and how
it fits into a multi–state world which undergirds his critique of alternate discourses about war and
the government. Xunzian's vision of politics and war as a source for contemporary Confucian theory
of civilian military relations. The early Confucian figure Xunzi (xunzi, during 310–c. 220 BCE)
gives a sophisticated analysis of war, which he develops on the basis of a larger social and political
vision that he works out in considerable detail. This larger vision of human society is thoroughly
normative in the sense that Xunzi both argues for the value of his ideal conception of society, and
relates these moral arguments for the Confucian Dao or Way. Xunzi's led him to argue about war in
ways that look distinctive to Western ethicists, but still his preferred issues are revealing themselves
as suggestive in relation to current debates in military ethics. Judaism does not regard violence and
war to promote justice as always wrong. It accepts that certain kinds of war will be ethically
justified, and that it is sometimes morally acceptable to kill people. Before declaring war or starting
a battle there must be a genuine attempt to make peace and avoid the conflict. In much

How Does Unification Of Language Cause Conflict
Another way in which language can prevent or resolve a conflict is by its role in nationalism that
implies a process of unification. Unification can either be the cause of a conflict because your local
identity is attacked or be the cause of a resolution because, inherently, people are setting apart their
differences and coming together into a nation. In the process of building a unified nation, a unified
language must appear as well. Smith (1998), argues that the unification of language, for example, is
a political act as well as a war act as long as it oppresses local identities and this may be a cause of
conflict. The process of unification can be a war act as Smith states because you are being
conquered. Your language and identity are being stripped off you and that can cause confrontation.
However, the same unification process has a self–implication of bringing together places that were
once separated for different reasons which constitutes a conflict resolution method. People are
putting aside their differences in order to have a nation. The differences don´t disappear but a new
rhetoric about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When we think of a conflict there must be at least two opposing sides. Nationalism is a way of
making this problem between two parties one that involves two complete countries. The individual
differences disappear and the problem is now a binary one with extreme opposing sides, each being
the whole people of each country as they are united under nationalism. Language in nationalism also
lets us trace the border between two communities, "language marks out a community because it is
the primary means of communication" (Smith, 1998, 28). International conflicts can arise because of
this impossibility to communicate effectively and the division this creates. So, language in
nationalism contributes to conflicts because it creates the difference between the opposing sides and
makes the conflict one that involves all the

Greed: A Short Story
A time that seemed far away, our tribes use to tell us stories of our origins at the stroke of night. I
remember them so clearly and carried them with me, as it was the only part left of our dignity,
besides our memories. I remember the stories, starting with a once upon a time or a not so long ago,
depending who you asked and who told, there was great man who built a boat, bringing aboard
animals and his families to save from the corruption below. When no one believed, or try to flee, the
world grew angry with trebles and began to rain endlessly. After forty days and nights, the rain
ceased, and the Earth was glad to see that it had been cleansed from the wretched thieves and greed.
The three families, plus the man and his wife alongside, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

tears showed us that we could no longer take the pain and anguish we had, later replacing it with

However, little did we know we were still trapped inside ourselves, for as many people we could kill
or bury in guilt, we were deprived of one thing that we knew we would never see, Peace. That word
was soon yearned, missed, and wished for our future generations wouldn't have a chance at it. Peace.
The one thing a man named Martin Luther King soon hoped to achieve. Peace. A war was started
that no one could win, for we had given up before the end. Peace. What people want with police.
Peace. Most debates end the most violently, for neither side with accept the other possibility. Peace.

Mediation and Peacekeeping Agenda in International Relations
MEDIATION AND PEACEKEEPING AGENDA In International Relations, mediation and
peacekeeping are the very essence of what are international relations itself, international
organizations and regional organization like the African Union. First established by the United
Nations decades ago, it has played an outstanding role in the peaceful aim and determination of
armed conflict around the world. It was at the end of the Cold War that it mostly reached its peak as
many long–term conflicts were finally coming to an end due to the political negotiations which were
often broken but were successfully applied after strong mediation and peacekeeping effort. For this
thesis of the Darfur conflict, to assess and examine the African Union's mediation and peacekeeping
agenda, we must first understand and differentiate between peacemaking and peacekeeping. Then
their role in the Darfur conflict could be analyzed and if they have had an outstanding role as in
many others armed conflict. Definition of Mediation and Peacekeeping What is mediation? What is
peacemaking? Peacemaking and mediation are deeply intertwine and cannot be defined without one
another. But what is peacemaking? Peacemaking has been defined by many scholars and critics. For
Douglas Noll, an expert in peacemaking and mediation specialized in difficult and intractable
conflicts; he defined peacemaking as a complex concept as even peace can be defined in so many
ways. But however he described peacemaking as a concept

Pragmatic Pacifism And Peacemaking Must Be Seen As Parts...
Pragmatic pacifism and peacemaking must be seen as parts of a broad framework for building
cultures of Peace at individual and community levels. But how exactly can individuals make a
difference? Scholars of Peace such as John Paul Lederach [Led–er–rack] have identified three levels
of leadership that are essential to peacebuilding. First is the top–level leadership which includes
military, political, religious leaders with high visibility involved in high–level negotiations to
resolve conflicts. Second, are middle ranged leaders respected in various sectors: ethnic and
religious leaders, academics, intellectuals and humanitarian leaders involved in interventions such as
problem–solving workshops, training in conflict resolution, and peace ... Show more content on

So, it would be safer for both sides to oppose war despite both believing they are on that side which
should resort to force in the quest for peace.
Herein lies the central dilemma of deploying armed force in humanitarian interventions for peace. I
have talked about the good that can be brought about by peacekeeping forces, even suggesting that
the United Nations Peacekeeping force in Rwanda should have intervened more proactively to
prevent the genocide in 1994.
But we also know that military humanitarian interventions in the name bringing peace to a country
in conflict can go horribly wrong. In 1994 President Clinton withdrew all US forces from the UN
peacekeeping force in Somalia after eighteen US soldiers were killed and images of their dead
bodies being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu were broadcast on television, horrifying and
infuriating the American public. For those too young to remember this tragic episode, it is well
documented in the Hollywood movie "Black Hawk Down." All UN forces in Somalia were
subsequently withdrawn in 1995 leaving that country to spiral into two decades of chaos and
lawlessness. Today, Somalia remains effectively a failed state.
The Americans were not the only ones scarred by the well–intentioned international efforts to bring
peace to Somalia. Here in Canada, we soon learned of the brutal beating to death of a Somali
teenager at the hands of

Gandhi Vs Dalai Lama Essay
Peace movements have been prevalent throughout history and there exists many theories on how to
effectively achieve amity amongst so much violence. Mahatma Gandhi, a predominate figure and
supporter of non–violence as a means of peace, explains how the only way to achieve reconciliation
is through individual suffering. Likewise, the Dalai Lama, who is a leader of Buddhists and a user of
a nonviolent approach, believes that peace is achieved by a liberation of pain and suffering from the
individual, a necessary choice to make in order to have genuine love and passion. Though both
approaches to peace appear similar, there are some differences and cons that appear as well. Overall,
it seems that to both of these figures, there is a high importance ... Show more content on

Using Buddhism, he emphasizes how everyone is bound together into a single family, and how
differences in "religions, ideologies, and political systems" only exist to bring happiness to the
individual (Barash 2014, 304). To achieve happiness, there needs to be "a combination of inner
peace, economic development, and above all, world peace" (Barash 2014, 304). Like Gandhi, the
Dalai Lama claims that one must also think of others while pursing happiness, which in turn leads to
"wise self–interest," then "compromised self–interest," and finally to "mutual interest" (Barash
2014, 305). Remaining indifferent to others makes it harder for peace to be achieved, especially
when emotions such as greed and jealously are involved. To the Dalai Lama conflicts only arise
"from a failure to understand one another's humanness" (Barash 2014, 306). His main argument is
that to reach peace there needs to be a universal understanding of others in order to be united.
Furthermore, the Dalai Lama believes that if there is not a significant change in the efforts to
achieve justice or harmony, this will continue to hurt the future

How Peacekeeping Operations Evolved Over Time Essay
International peacekeeping efforts are a relatively new feature in military strategy. They have their
roots in earlier conflicts, most notably the First Schleswig War between Denmark and Prussia in
1849–1850. A combined force of 3,800 troops from both Sweden and Norway with the intent of
maintaining law and order and keeping the peace were assembled, while an armistice was worked
out. This set the precedent for peacekeeping operations that would become more commonplace in
the twentieth century. After the First World War, the League of Nations was established, the
predecessor of what would later become the United Nations. The League was established in large
part to hopefully avoid another world war as devastating as the Great War, as it was called. The
League of Nations ultimately disbanded, giving way to the United Nations, but peacekeeping
operations increased and evolved to encompass broader and more complex conflicts, including civil
wars, which were ignored by the League out of respect for a nation's sovereignty. This brief
summary will address how peacekeeping operations evolved over time and how these operations, or
a specific operation, shapes the view of peacekeeping operations by the American people. The
League of Nations was established as a means to ensure international peace and security through
collective consultation and action. The early peacekeeping operations largely depended on
precedents, which established the rules and strategies to be followed in

The United Nations : An Organization
The United Nations peacekeeping forces were first used in 1948 to assist in Kashmir and Palestine.
It is not mentioned in detail in the United Nations (UN) Charter this practise that later become
known as peacekeeping , the word was formally used then during the 1956 Suez Canal Crisis in
Egypt. The United Nations is increasingly criticised on the effectiveness of its peacekeeping
mission, according to authors of the International Herald Tribune Shaukat Aziz and Luis Dias Diogo
"The UN has the noblest of all mandates which is peace and human progress and prosperity". But
according to author Blanchfield L. "The UN has been slow to implement reforms and that linking
payment of US assessments to progress on UN reform is the most effective way to motivate member
states to efficiently pursue comprehensive reform".
The United Nations is an intergovernmental organisation which is there to promote international
cooperation amongst member countries, this organisation replaced the failed League of Nations
which was the brainchild of former American president Woodrow Wilson, established on the 24th of
October 1945 after World War 2 its main aim is to prevent another global conflict. The UN is seen
by its critics as an ineffective partly because of its failure to curb civil war conflicts around the

Peace Women Paper
Peace Women I am a strong believer in feminism and lesbian rights. I chose to research five women
from different places across the world who took a stand for lesbian rights. These ladies include: Zohl
de Ishtar (Australia), Haya Shalom (Israel), Izabela Jaruga (Poland), Lo Sai "Rose" Wu (China,
Hong Kong), and Chuen Juei Ho (China, Taiwan). The first peace woman I want to talk about is
Zohl de Ishtar. Zohl is an "Australian lesbian who helps women in Australia on projects in
communities and even world wide" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). By working on the
international level she is able to work with a diverse number of people. "She has worked to
eliminate nuclear weapons and militarism, campaigned to improve the rights of all peoples,
defended cultural integrity and strived to end any form of discrimination, with an emphasis on
sexuality" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). Zohl not only wants to help women with a so called
unusual sexual orientation, but also the general public.
The second peace woman I want to talk about is Haya Shalom from Israel. Haya is a feminist
sponsoring human rights as a lesbian. "She is one of the most well–known women supporting
women's unity for peace and women's rights" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). I respect Shalom for
having such an impact on women's rights while being a lesbian. I cannot see the journey to gain

Gandhi Peace Reflection
There are many events held in today's rapidly growing world which help in maintaining a better and
more stable life for all of us. These events are held by various local, national, and international
bodies which try to play their part in creating a positive impact on our society. Many people living
near–by attend these occasions while organizers attempt to attract a larger audience through their
special event–related activities. While all of these events appear to be different and unique from
each other, they all share a common goal. This goal is how to create essential social change which
would eventually lead to a more peaceful environment for all human beings in this world. In this
paper, the event which I will be talking about is the 25th Annual Gandhi Peace Festival 2017 and
will explain my views on how this particular event relates to the study of peace. As a part of this
festival, I attended the public lecture on "Non–Violence, Women's Rights, and Social Justice"
delivered by Shabana Azmi on October 2nd at the Hamilton Convention Centre. Shabana Azmi is an
acclaimed Indian filmstar and social activist. She also was a UN Goodwill Ambassador for
Population and Development and continues to work on social and public health issues. Through the
following paragraphs, I will discuss how the content of this lecture is beneficial to the overall study
of peace and also how this public event had a positive impact on people of the community. At first, I

Crucial Confrontation In Billy Bud Sailor
Crucial Confrontation Imagine having someone hate you with all their being. In the book, Billy Bud
Sailor, the seemingly lovable Billy Bud, experienced exactly this. Immediately after coming aboard
the Bellipotent, a war ship, the young handsome soldier hit it off with all his crew members. That is,
all except one. Claggart, the master at arms, held a higher rank than Billy on the ship, however, for
some unknown reason he hated Billy, and constantly sought out ways to make his life harder. One
day, a wise old man came to the naïve Billy, telling him of Claggart's hatred towards him, and
warning him to act cautiously around the master at arms. Claggart's disdain towards him, confuses
Billy a great deal, as he refused to accept it for a significant matter of time. Everyone who reads this
story wants Billy and Claggart to resolve their differences and get along. However, some believe the
Billy confronted Claggart about the problem seemed the right approach, while others think he most
definitely should not confront him. Billy should have confronted Claggart about his hatred. Claggart
caused trouble for Billy, peace stood crucial for the ship, and the Bible showed support for this
decision. Clearly Billy needed to confront Claggart about their issues. For starters, Claggart caused
trouble for Billy. At the start of his hatred, Claggart acted friendly towards Billy, causing him not to

The Lyrical Novel Border Town by Shen Congwen
A lyrical novel has unique features such that its words are directed to the reader, appealing to the
reader's emotions and feelings, while depicting a story which complements these emotions that is
induced upon the reader. The idea behind a lyrical novel can be said to be a contradiction–novels
focus on the explanation of the story plot, while lyrical novels are more about moral decisions, the
expression of themes and how the surroundings can be integrated to show the character's mood.
Hence, it can be said that it is the character's emotions that drives the development of the plot.
Shen Congwen's Border Town can indeed be considered to be such a lyrical novel. Border Town
was depicted to be a 'dreamlike' town, with its citizens enjoying peace generation after generation,
like the flowing water in the river next to the town. The white pagoda stands tall, unwavering,
symbolizing peacefulness and tranquillity. Border Town is widely considered to be a utopian–like
story, with an interesting love twist, where two men are after the affections of the lead character.
There are several features that resemble those of a lyrical novel. In the beginning of the story, a
passage depicts the peacefulness of the town by the use of the setting of the town, with objects that
are normally associated with beauty and serenity. Such was seen in, 'there were peach blossoms

Echo From The Army Poem Analysis
The "Echoes from the Army" written by Col. Samuel Ross and Adj. James B. Burbank for the
officers and men of the 20th Connecticut regiment, and published in the Hartford Daily Courant on
Feb. 24, 1868 as one of the loyal papers in Connecticut. Their echoes addressed the loyal citizens of
Connecticut that the soldiers, remember what Governor Buckingham did for them during the time of
the war, and are grateful for his respect to the loyal men that fought. However, they are also
addressing the "peace men" that sympathized with the rebellion, and are determined to continue the

the people of Connecticut decide on the issue of country or no country. Col. Samuel Ross, Adj.

about Governor Buckingham, for his admiration towards the soldiers and officers that fought in the

The Just War Theory Of War
As warfare strategies advance, the attitudes concerning the morality of war can change and lead the
nation into unnecessary conflicts. The United States' views towards war from two different time
periods display a shift when compared to a moral standard. Comparing these attitudes to the Just
War Doctrine displays this change towards morality. The Just War Theory serves as a guideline for
determining a war as moral. The Doctrine consists of three major principles that contain the criteria
of just war. Jus ad bellum outlines the situations in which it is acceptable for a nation to go to war
before any action has taken place. This includes that war must be directed towards a real and moral
cause, authorized by qualified leaders, planned to settle the intended dilemma. Entering into war
must be the "last resort" to solve the given situation and must be just compared to the enemy. Jus in
bello addresses how a nation's forces should act during the act of war. This includes that the nation
should respond to a situation with forces that are proportional to those that have been inflicted on
the nation, and the prohibition of tactics such as rape and weapons of mass destruction (Fabre 963–
964). Just post bellum refers to the period after a war when peace is to be restored. It focuses on
establishing treaties and preventing nations to seek vengeance (Stahn 159). Using this doctrine as
the structure of moral war can determine a shift from this ideal state of morality. After World

The Just-War Theory Cause Dissension In The Church
Just–War Theory Since the dawn of Christianity, thoughts of war, and the Christian conscience has
been at odds. This was a major issue in the early Church and continues to cause dissension in the
Church today. The Just–War theory, originated by St. Augustine, has developed throughout the ages
in order to justify Christian war in the defense of peace and charity. The foundation of Just–War
Theory lies in a two rode path, which allows an evil attendant to occur as it is separated from the
good, which is intended. In the same way the Just War Theory justifies the murder of the enemy in
order to bring peace to the situation and to resist the evil of the enemy. However, although it holds
great importance, many see the Just–War Theory as a useless doctrine. Pacifists around the world
have written about the inadequacies of the theory, primarily the theory's inconsistency with Christ's
message of loving one's neighbor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the seven principles of the modern Just–War Theory are examined, it is evident that the
theory's prime objective is to maintain peace and order. The first principal refers to just cause

defense of allies, who are subject to such aggression. Thus the proof is in the pudding, it is evident
that a just–war protects national security. An example of this in present history is in the initial

Who is Responsible for the Establishment of the War in Iraq?
Accountability:
After reviewing the just war theory in relation to the war in Iraq, it is assessed the Iraq war did not
meet the requirements for the Iraq war. Michael Walzer stated that, 'the Iraq war was an unnecessary
war and unnecessary wars are also unjust wars' (Religion and Ethics news weekly, 2009, Online). As
a result, the Iraq war did not have a plausible cause or authorisation for intervention. Due to the
failure to assess whether Iraq did conceal WMD, Weapons inspector David Kay argues that, 'If you
cannot rely on good, accurate intelligence' then 'you can have a policy of pre–emption' (Hinnebusch,
2007, P.24). As a result, Iraq has become a case of 'imperial overreach' (Hinnebusch, 2007, P.24).
Kay argues the US is able to bypass the UN authorisation by enforcing an imminent attack. As a
result, political and military manipulation can indicate that the US can withhold extensive powers.
For that reason, there has been a growing concern for accountable in terms for enforcing warfare. In
particular, due to the nationwide protest against the Iraq war, political accountability has became an
important factor in the democratic process. The government did not have support from the people.
This implies that democracy can be questioned. For that reason, the public can hold a governmental
official to account by changing them in the next general election. Furthermore, the International
criminal court 'establishes to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most

Private Peaceful Comparative Essay
The novel Private Peaceful and the short story "The Best Christmas Present in the World" are both
by Michael Morpurgo, however the author is not the only thing that connects the two. When looking
at these stories you realise just how similar they are, mainly the characters, plot and many of the
themes. However, these stories are also very different, and the main characters face challenges that
are different to each other yet hold just as much importance. Tommo, our narrator in Private
Peaceful, faces difficult times when he is forced to leave his loved ones to fight for his country in
the First World War. Jim Macpherson is the protagonist in "The Best Christmas Present in the
World" and also has to leave his friends and family for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When looking at the latter, it does seem like Connie and Jim almost reflect Molly and Charlie in
their loss and relationship with each other. However it does seem, at a glance at least, that Private
Peaceful is the sadder of the pair. When looking deeper though, and thinking about Molly, you do
realise that, yes, she does loose her love but at least she has a support network. Connie however,
didn 't have any of that and therefore never fully got over the loss of her husband, as it seems that he
was her foundation and when he left she is, as it says in the book "is a bit confused" and "She has no
family you know. No one visits". It is clear that these stories are tales of love, loss and sorrow and
hold many emotions between their pages. They teach us of the way life was in the war, how terrible
the danger was in Private Peaceful but also how incredible the peace felt in "The Best Christmas
Present in the World", even if for only a day. They do have their differences but still give us the
message of hope and to treasure what we have, as we may not have it for much longer. They have
varied plots, themes and characters but are overall very close in many aspects, such as the sacrifices

Is There Just War Inevitable?
There have been varying views as to the definition of war, while others have a broader definition to
include even conflicts at home, between family circle, within and out of the immediate family;
others limit the concept of war to social phenomenon which occurs only between political
communities or within intellectuals. In all war according to Encarta English dictionary is "a period
of hostile relations between countries, states, or factions that leads to fighting between armed forces,
especially in land, air or sea battles." While many have questioned the justification of war because it
elicit tremendous cruelty and suffering, others have held high that war is "a peculiar human activity,
in that it can bring out some of our best traits, such as courage and self–sacrifice." (David – 2000)
The big questions are: Is there anything like just war? Or can war ever be morally justifiable? What
is the relationship between human nature and war? Or is war part of human nature that is inevitable?
These and many other ethical issues and questions raised by war and what some define as just war
will be considered in my paper.
Let's consider the question, is there anything like just war? Evidently, there is the theory of just war
which holds high and on which bases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Pacifism Essay
Pacifism is the belief that violence is not the way to resolve differences. They believe that war can
be avoided and that there are better and longer lasting solutions to disputes.
There are, however, various categories of 'pacifist'. A 'total pacifist' is someone who completely
avoids violence and believes it can never be justified, not even in self–defence or to protect others –
this they see as the only morally correct view of war. A relative pacifist is someone who may use
violence in certain situations but who supports disarmament. They are discriminating about WW1
but agree that WW2 had to be fought. Nuclear pacifists believe that conventional weapons are
acceptable as a last resort if war is inevitable, as it is, but nuclear ... Show more content on

Martin Luther King and Gandhi deliberately broke laws that were about dividing people according
to their race. These actions are 'non–violent direct action' meaning to act against something you
believe to be wrong, but without resorting to violence. These are peaceful demonstrations such as
labour strikes.
Most pacifists are committed to finding new and imaginative methods of conflict resolution. "The
Quakers", for example, are a Christian group who are famous for their pacifist stance. This is not a
doctrinal tradition and there is no rule to say that Quakers must not fight under any circumstances,
they have chosen to follow this path, as they have done for over 300 years. Quakers believe there is
something of God in all people. They believe that more can be accomplished by appealing to this
capacity for love and goodness than can be hoped for by threatening punishment or retaliation.
Instead of harming and killing, they us "spiritual weapons" – love, truth, imagination and laughter –
weapons that heal, not destroy.
Far from ignoring the problems associated with and cause by war, they actively work to solve these
problems in creative and effective ways. They often review and debate the issues involved in current
development and are responsible for bringing many hidden issues to the public eye, and their work
is effective.
There are a number of other benefits the non–violence and pacifist policy has. They believe that

Peace and Conflict: Advocating the Use of Non-Violoent...
When we are trying to attain world peace, we must first start with peace between individuals as
these relationships are the building blocks of society and nations. Peace can be achieved by non–
violent means or by the use of lethal force. This essay will explore notions of peace and conflict,
advocating the use of non–violent means for resolving conflict. The environmental and social cost of
lethal force is very high and unsustainable. Never the less, there are situations when justice requires
the use of lethal force and examples of these will be discussed. The paper will conclude with the
argument that ongoing life enhancing structural reform is required for the management and the
prevention of future violent conflicts throughout the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now that we have an understanding of what peace is, what then is conflict and how do we resolve
it? What is conflict? The Oxford Dictionary defines conflict "as an encounter with arms, a fight,
especially a prolonged struggle", (as mentioned in Tillet, 1991, p.1). The Chinese symbol of crisis
has two characters, one representing danger and the other representing opportunity, (Lantieri, L. &
Patti, J.1996, p.53). Michael Banks claims that conflict is necessary, as it provides the catalyst for
change and progress in society. Peace education's aim shouldn't be to abolish conflict, but to
facilitate its healthy expression and to bring it within society's control, (as cited in Sandole &
Sandole–Staroste, 1987, p. 260). Karl Marx was one the first people to analyse conflict, believing
that people are creative and generally cooperative, but who face the tyranny of capitalism. Marx
believed that conflict between the bourgeoisie (the owners of capital and means of production) and
the proletariat (the working class) would lead to a revolution, whereby the workers would overthrow
the owners, (Scimecca, 1993, p.214). John Burton speaks of conflict resulting from inherent basic
human needs being unmet and as a perception of incompatible values between the parties, that can
only be resolved through structural changes, (Tillet, 1991,

Bringing Peace to Northern Ireland Essay examples
Bringing Peace to Northern Ireland It has proved hard to bring peace to Northern Ireland. There are
many factors causing the difficulties. I think some are more important than others are. I think the
most important factors are as follows. Religion is a problems because throughout history there have
been rivalries between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. Paramilitaries are a problem
because they have a huge amount of control. Difference of opinions between people is a problem
because it has been difficult to keep everyone happy. Extremists, to justify their actions, often refer
to history. Politics has been a problem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martin McGuiness, the current Education Secretary, has openly admitted to being an ex–IRA
member. Also Gerry Adams, a leader of Sinn Fein is believed (by Unionists) to have close
connections with the IRA. There are very recently problems with area boundaries. In September
2001, Catholic families were walking to school through a Protestant area. This caused problems for
Protestants as they couldn't see a need for them to walk through their area, especially as they claim
the same Catholics vandalise their properties. Throughout these recent events we can see why it has
been difficult to bring peace to Northern Ireland.
One reason for the obstacles in bringing peace is religion. Although the main argument is between
Nationalists and Unionists, Nationalists are mainly Catholic and Unionists are mainly Protestant.
Throughout history there has been an altercation between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland. I
think this began because in the 17th Century, both Elizabeth I and James I gave English Protestants
Irish Catholic rebel's land to increase the security in England. These Catholics did not like this
because they felt the land was rightfully theirs. They refused to accept that the land belonged to the
English Protestants. Catholics not only hated the Protestants for this but they resented British rule
because it was them that gave the Protestants the land.

Pirkei Avot: Be Of The Disciples Of Aharon
The quote that best describes the "essential me" is found in Pirkei Avot: "Be of The disciples of
Aharon, loving peace and pursuing peace." (1:12) If one wants to be like the students of Aharon, he
must love and seek peace. When explaining this Pasuk, Rabeinu Yonah says that loving and
pursuing peace encompasses two traits. The first trait, described by loving peace, is that one should
desire peace. However, desiring peace is not enough; he must also go out of his way to pursue it and
dispose of arguments and strife. These are two traits that represent who I am as I love and always try
to pursue peace; I consider it to be a very important characteristic and I reflect it in my actions.

BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES ON CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AND PEACEMAKING
Introduction As descendants of Adam and Eve, one has a few realities to grapple with. This reality is
based in the fact that one has a sin nature. Sin is present and influences everyday life. The world is
evil, life is hard and conflict happens because sin is a reality of this world. One does not accept the
world just as it is but makes an effort to reform it. Life is difficult but one seeks means by which to

they hold the most amount of influence. Therefore, it behooves leaders to assess the types of conflict
management so that, as the situation requires the leader can adapt the approaches for the most
positive outcome for all involved.
In his book, Creative Conflict Management, Donald Palmer identifies five main conflict
management styles. Each of these styles has certain pros and cons as well as appropriate times for
use. These five styles are: avoiding, accommodating, collaborating, compromising and attacking.
(Donald Palmer, Creative Conflict Management, 25–31)
Avoiding
This style involves simply staying out of conflict. It requires very little investment toward
relationships, passivity and unassertiveness on the part of the avoider. The avoider will run, hide or
simply withdraw to alleviate any pain that may potentially be accrued. The outcome is often that
conflict goes unresolved and bitterness may occur. However, this may be an appropriate response
when others in conflict are too immature to respond well, when conflict cannot possibly result in
positive outcomes or as a stalling tactic to allow time needed to settle emotions thus bringing clarity.
Accommodating
This style is implemented when an individual's focus is to maintain relationships–even at unhealthy
costs. The style often necessitates sacrificing the interest of the accommodator to appease the
interests of others. This style often

Jean-Jacques Rousseau's The State of War Essay
Jean–Jacques Rousseau's "The State of War"
Jean–Jacques Rousseau's "The State of War" elegantly raises a model for confederative peace
among the states of Europe, and then succinctly explains its impossibility. Rousseau very
systematically lays out the benefits of such a "perpetual peace" through arguments based only in a
realism of pure self–interest, and then very elegantly and powerfully turns the inertia of the self–
interest machinery against the same to explain why it can never come to be. However, this final step
may be a bit too far; in his academic zeal for the simple, I will argue that he has overlooked the real,
or at least ignored the possible. His conclusion may be appealingly reasoned, but it is still
insupportable.

While refuting the possibility that this international state of nature is a Hobbesian war of all against
all [which would tend to the destruction of the species, an aim he finds both logically and religiously
untenable (114)], he certainly acknowledges that conflicts occur even among actors whom we would
call naturally virtuous those seeking peace (112).
This contradiction is problematic because the boundaries between the civil and the natural, the
domestic and the international, overlap at times (112). For instance, war on the outside invariably
affects the civic order on the inside. Because of this contradiction, we are forced to bear the burdens
of supporting both orders separately, thus negating the advantages brought by either. We are subject
to the vagaries of the international system when it affects civil life, and yet as individuals our hands
are tied and we are unable to enjoy natural freedom ourselves because we are also subject to the
authority, at times oppressive, of the civil domestic structures (which, as we have seen, fail to
protect us from all international affects) (112). Even a state that hopes for the status quo can't count
on it because other states won't allow it to remain (114). Peace is often lacking even among virtuous
actors, but peace and war are not dichotomous. A state of war results when two actors mutually
decide that their existences are incompatible, and each coolly resolves to annihilate the other

The Ever Increasing Urgancy for World Peace
The 20th century can be credited as being one of the most violent times in recorded history. There
were over 98 million war related deaths, which is about six times the combined deaths of both the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Orwell conveys each of these killings as "one mind less, one
world less." World peace would be an important goal to work towards. Many wanted to achieve
world peace, however, there were many different visions for how this could be accomplished.
Despite the many anti–war actions that occurred during the previous centuries, the twentieth century
marks the conception of an organized approach to global peace. Advocates of world peace believed

The first conference, for which the United States took an active role enacted three treaties. The first,
establishing the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The second treaty outlined the treatment of
prisoners and the citizens where the war was present. The third treaty focuses on the protection of
marked medical units and requires them to treat the wounded of the both sides of the conflict.
Focusing on the first treaty, arbitration was a natural for U.S. advocates of peace, dating back to the
Jay Treaty (1794). The process of arbitration allowed the U.S. to extend legal concepts to foreign
relations, without compromising U.S. freedom of action. One of the earliest arms control
conferences was the Washington Disarmament Conference, organized by Charles Evans Hughs who
sought the promotion of peace via disarmament and outlawry of war. With the U.S. being a world
power, though arbitration, the U.S. could levy this power with conflicting parties in hope of peace.
During this time, reduction of armament was an integral part of the Republicans' diplomatic
strategy.5 During the Washington Conference, Hughes pulled off a diplomatic tour de force, one of
the first major international agreement on arms reduction that has yet to be negotiated.6 After
months of negotiations, five countries agree to limit their number of battleships, establishing a 5:3:3

Kevin Rudd's Speech In The Stolen Generation
In February of 2008, on behalf of The Australian Parliament, Prime Minister of the time, Kevin
Rudd, presented a speech directed towards "the Stolen Generation". This extract addresses the
horrific losses that the Indigenous community has endured in the recent past, acknowledging the
mistreatment and offering stories of the abuse.
In the context of an influential speech, the correct use of language is essential. When attempting to
persuade listeners to agree with them, speakers must use a particular type of vocabulary, known as
emotive language, to evoke certain emotions within the listeners. Emotive language often uses
words that would be categorized as biased, and in a way, manipulates onlookers to feel sympathetic
towards the speaker. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does this technique reinforce clarity, but it also emphasizes the point that is being
discussed. Throughout the speech, Rudd continues to use words such as "sorry" and "apologise", as
a way of expressing his resentment towards what had happened in the past. For example, the word
"sorry" is used at the start of many sentences, in which, these sentences are all of the same format.
Rudd begins each of these phrases with a single word, in this case, the word is "sorry", then
continues to justify his argument, finishing each sentence off with a reason for his use of the
repeated word. He also structures his sentences in a way that is easier to be heard, keeping any
sentence that uses the repetition technique short. "Sorry for the physical suffering... Sorry for the
tragedy, the absolute tragedy, of childhoods lost... Sorry for all these injustices to you...". By
repeating these keywords, the message Rudd is trying to deliver will stick in people's minds a lot
more than if he were only to say the phrase

The Horrors Of The Holocaust And The Holocaust
Through history we have seen countless times when religion is used as a basis to wage war on
another country. In WW2 Hitler used hate for the Jewish people in Germany to gather support and
attempt to wipe out the Jewish race on German soil. Looking back at this war we see some of the
terrible things that the German's did to these Jewish people in concentration camps as well as the
thousands just murdered in cold blood. In the US not only did we refuse to go to war in the
beginning of WW2 but we sold weapons to both sides of the war. It really wasn't until the bombing
of pearl harbor that we actually decided to join and fight with the allies. Up until we joined the war
we had never really had any reason to believe that the rumors about what the Germans were doing to
the Jewish people were true at all. However, the US soon learned of the morally wrong things that
were taking place in Germany. The Nazis were able to gain followers by falsely blaming the Jewish
people for hardships that were taking place in Germany. Claiming victim to around 17 million

was the suppression of another religion against what is believed in the Catholic religion, but the

Essay on Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger
Consequences come from choices individuals make, such as waking up in the morning at a specific
time in order to avoid traffic. However, even if the decisions are not made by the individual, they
still have to suffer the consequences of those decisions made by others. Take, for instance, the
choice that someone makes to drink and drive while under the influence. If that person kills
someone, then his decision impacts the lives of everyone involved and not just himself. A theme in
Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger, is that people must accept the consequences of their actions
because it influences the direction they go in life. This theme is developed through the character of
Jeremiah, the conflict between Davy and the law, and the symbolism ... Show more content on

Jeremiah's intervention is observed when he insists, "breathe ....breathe! .... Reuben Land, in the
name of the living God I am telling you to breathe" (Enger, p. 3). Jeremiah ordered his son to
breathe, even though twelve minutes had passed since he was dead; however, when he orders
Reuben to come back to life, he says that in the name of God he must resuscitate. Reuben was not
destined to live, and because his father's choice went against what was supposed to happen, Reuben
must live an asthmatic life that limits what he is able to do. Ultimately, Enger portrays how all
decisions have consequences, and many times the results will not be the expected ones.
The conflict presented between Davy and the law depicts that people must take responsibility for the
consequences of their actions. Davy is Reuben's independent older brother. While only seventeen
years old, he always gives the appearance of an adult fully capable of caring for himself. He has a
mind of his own and does not want anybody telling him what to do. Davy's independence seems to
follow his dad's advice, which is shown at the end of the first chapter when Jeremiah tells his
children, "We and the world, my children will always be at war. Retreat is impossible. Arm
yourselves" (Enger, p.4). Jeremiah advises his children that life is difficult, and

The Aborigines Protection Amending Act of 1915
B) Argue against the Protection Act
I have chosen to argue question B, because I am against The Protection Act.
The protection act was passed in 1897, where the chief protector, who was in charges and their
guarding, he was allowed to remove children from their families. In 1971 the Aboriginal Protection
Act stopped. The act gave the power to remove any child without any court order nor parental
consent. The act provided full control, and therefore the Aborigines would lose their freedom. The
government removed Aboriginal children from their families and where starting the process that
created the Stolen Generation, also known as the Stolen Children.

After the British colonization of Australia in 1788 began, certain social problems started to appear,
some of witch let to alcoholism, poverty etc. This can be related to the Protection Act; Archie Roach
was taken from his family because he had a white grandfather. Roach knows what the Aboriginal
children were going through. In 14 years he thought that both of his parents was dead, because he
had been told that they was killed in a fire. Then Roach received a letter from his sister, witch said
that his mother had past away a week ago. Roach has been lied to his whole life, so he ran away.
Now he is 45 years old, and his life has led to alcoholism.
The Protection Act has affected many Aborigines children. An example from Carol, personal story
in Bringing Them Home Report; "Four generations of my family went without parently love,
without mother or father. I myself found it very hard to show any love to my children because I
wasn't given that, so was my mother and grandmother". This shows that it does not only affect one
generation but several generations. Because they have not experienced motherly love, they cannot
pass it on to their own children.

Themes Of Loneliness And Solitude

  • 1. Themes Of Loneliness And Solitude Tony Samson Mrs. Maddox English 9 9 September 2016 Themes of Loneliness and Solitude in The Samurai's Garden I.Introduction: A: Hook– Many view loneliness and solitude with distaste, why would someone want to be without the company of others? B: Bridge– Being alone and isolated is seen as dark and dismal. In Gail Tsukiyama's The Samurai's Garden the main character, Stephen, is apprehensive as he travels to the village of Tarumi. He had been there a few times before on vacation, but this would be the first time he had ever been without the rest of his family. Over the next year, Stephen would be recovering from his tuberculosis in the clear air of the village under the care of Matsu, his house's caretaker. Other than a few visits by his father and letters from his family in Hong Kong, he would be alone with Matsu. He soon finds that the isolation of Tarumi holds a quiet elegance and peacefulness. C: Thesis– The characters in The Samurai's Garden find peace in loneliness, beauty in isolation, and freedom from judgement through solitude. II. Body i. Sometimes, being lonely can help one to come to terms with the issues in their life. Without the distractions of others, it becomes easier to grieve over a loss or to accept one's fate and move on. ii. When summer drew to a close, the vacationing families left their refuse on the beach for Stephen to walk among, alone with his thoughts. "I felt lonely seeing these things, not for ... • 3. The Reasons Behind the Difficulties of Bringing Peace to... The Reasons Behind the Difficulties of Bringing Peace to the Middle East A major source of conflict in the Middle East during the last fifty years has been the dispute between Arabs and Jews over Palestine. For hundreds of years, the great majority of the people living in Palestine were Arabs. But at the end of the nineteenth century some Jews in Europe were becoming increasingly bitter about growing anti–Semitism. They started to talk about setting up a state of their own where they would be free from persecution. They chose Palestine because it was there birthplace of the Jews religion. Small numbers of these Jews, who were called Zionists, began to emigrate from Europe to Palestine. By 1914 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Apart from the holy shrines and places of worship, the Arabs and Israelis are fighting over living space. Since the creation of the Jewish state of Israel, Arabs have waged many wars on the new territory. In every one of those wars, the Arabs lost or signed an armistice, sometimes even losing more of their territory to the Israeli. Unfortunately because of all this, it is hard to imagine that there were be a lasting peace between the Arab and Jew in the foresee. The Muslims the "Al–Sakhra", or "The rock", is precious and holy as it is regarded as the departure point for the prophet' s Muhammad's night journey, while for many Jews and Christians it is likely site of Abraham sacrifice and of the holy of holies of the Jewish temple. In the time of Jesus first century Ad Palestine was ruled by the Romans. In AD 70 and again in AD 135 the Jews rebelled against their Roman rulers. Roman soldiers crushed both revolt, destroyed the city of Jerusalem and expelled the Jews. Many thousands fled to neighbouring countries and over the next 200 years they settled in almost every part of the Roman Empire. Many became merchants, sand farmers, bankers and crafts men. Almost all Europeans were Christians and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Analysis Of ' The Slow Paced'spring Summer Winter Spring... Few words are spoken in Kim Ki–duk's Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring. Yet much is expressed regarding humankind's relationship with nature. The slow–paced, contemplative movie explores key Buddhist principles, including rebirth and meditation, through the life of an apprentice monk. Laden with heavy symbolism, as seen in the use of the seasons, animals, architecture, medicine and punishment, the film deeply considers people's connection to their environment, stressing in particular the importance of both inner and outer harmony. Seasons The seasons are likely the most notable motif of the film, which progresses through them as they match the stages of the Apprentice's life. As the once young man presumably returns towards the end to replace his old master, the wheel of life turns again. The beautiful cinematography, featuring long shots of the surrounding landscape, captures the breathtaking beauty of the area as the seasons change. By enriching the movie with these scenes, rather than focusing on just the plot, Kim invites the viewer to appreciate the setting's beauty, allowing time for reflection on both the story and the cyclical tendencies of nature and life. Following the seasons through the Apprentice's life reflects a cycle of rebirth that is an integral part of Buddhist teachings. Animals More subtly, animals also play a significant role in each stage of the Apprentice's life. Like the seasons, one creature matches up with the Apprentice during each phase ... • 7. Just Post Bellum By Gary J. Bass The intent of this review is to evaluate the concept of "Just Post Bellum" that the article 's author, Gary J. Bass, developed through an empirical theoretical research about the doctrine of Just War. The way the author adapts the evidence found in the speeches of former presidents such as George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter makes us think he tends to justify somewhat recent interventions the United States made in the Middle East when he says: "Both presidents explained that for a free state a just war, must show not only that went to war for good reasons, but also that their conduct war was consistent with that purpose: to help make the most stable region and safe, and leaving affected populations less subject to violence and oppression." However, Gary J. Bass also provides constructive criticism and compiles theoretical concepts of importance of various classical and contemporary authors from the realistic–idealistic point of view of several events that promote an understanding of clear concepts of Just War and their relevance in the context of a globalized world. The author refutes the conventional perception that "Political leaders often invoke postwar evolution as bringing democracy or stability as part of justifying or condemning a war," (P. 384), when in reality other standards of postwar evolution exist. In this article, the author wants to prove his thesis about the theory of Just War, in the concept of "Jus Post Bellum," in that it should be applied correctly by the ... • 9. Conuncianitarianism And Confucianism Confucianism does not explicitly encourage war given its emphasis on humanity. This combination of moral vision and political realism combined with his advocacy of strong political authorities that nevertheless rule justly in service of the common good. Xunzi's vision of the good society and how it fits into a multi–state world which undergirds his critique of alternate discourses about war and the government. Xunzian's vision of politics and war as a source for contemporary Confucian theory of civilian military relations. The early Confucian figure Xunzi (xunzi, during 310–c. 220 BCE) gives a sophisticated analysis of war, which he develops on the basis of a larger social and political vision that he works out in considerable detail. This larger vision of human society is thoroughly normative in the sense that Xunzi both argues for the value of his ideal conception of society, and relates these moral arguments for the Confucian Dao or Way. Xunzi's led him to argue about war in ways that look distinctive to Western ethicists, but still his preferred issues are revealing themselves as suggestive in relation to current debates in military ethics. Judaism does not regard violence and war to promote justice as always wrong. It accepts that certain kinds of war will be ethically justified, and that it is sometimes morally acceptable to kill people. Before declaring war or starting a battle there must be a genuine attempt to make peace and avoid the conflict. In much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. How Does Unification Of Language Cause Conflict Another way in which language can prevent or resolve a conflict is by its role in nationalism that implies a process of unification. Unification can either be the cause of a conflict because your local identity is attacked or be the cause of a resolution because, inherently, people are setting apart their differences and coming together into a nation. In the process of building a unified nation, a unified language must appear as well. Smith (1998), argues that the unification of language, for example, is a political act as well as a war act as long as it oppresses local identities and this may be a cause of conflict. The process of unification can be a war act as Smith states because you are being conquered. Your language and identity are being stripped off you and that can cause confrontation. However, the same unification process has a self–implication of bringing together places that were once separated for different reasons which constitutes a conflict resolution method. People are putting aside their differences in order to have a nation. The differences don´t disappear but a new rhetoric about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we think of a conflict there must be at least two opposing sides. Nationalism is a way of making this problem between two parties one that involves two complete countries. The individual differences disappear and the problem is now a binary one with extreme opposing sides, each being the whole people of each country as they are united under nationalism. Language in nationalism also lets us trace the border between two communities, "language marks out a community because it is the primary means of communication" (Smith, 1998, 28). International conflicts can arise because of this impossibility to communicate effectively and the division this creates. So, language in nationalism contributes to conflicts because it creates the difference between the opposing sides and makes the conflict one that involves all the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I remember them so clearly and carried them with me, as it was the only part left of our dignity, besides our memories. I remember the stories, starting with a once upon a time or a not so long ago, depending who you asked and who told, there was great man who built a boat, bringing aboard animals and his families to save from the corruption below. When no one believed, or try to flee, the world grew angry with trebles and began to rain endlessly. After forty days and nights, the rain ceased, and the Earth was glad to see that it had been cleansed from the wretched thieves and greed. The three families, plus the man and his wife alongside, ... • 15. Mediation and Peacekeeping Agenda in International Relations MEDIATION AND PEACEKEEPING AGENDA In International Relations, mediation and peacekeeping are the very essence of what are international relations itself, international organizations and regional organization like the African Union. First established by the United Nations decades ago, it has played an outstanding role in the peaceful aim and determination of armed conflict around the world. It was at the end of the Cold War that it mostly reached its peak as many long–term conflicts were finally coming to an end due to the political negotiations which were often broken but were successfully applied after strong mediation and peacekeeping effort. For this thesis of the Darfur conflict, to assess and examine the African Union's mediation and peacekeeping agenda, we must first understand and differentiate between peacemaking and peacekeeping. Then their role in the Darfur conflict could be analyzed and if they have had an outstanding role as in many others armed conflict. Definition of Mediation and Peacekeeping What is mediation? What is peacemaking? Peacemaking and mediation are deeply intertwine and cannot be defined without one another. But what is peacemaking? Peacemaking has been defined by many scholars and critics. For Douglas Noll, an expert in peacemaking and mediation specialized in difficult and intractable conflicts; he defined peacemaking as a complex concept as even peace can be defined in so many ways. But however he described peacemaking as a concept ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Pragmatic Pacifism And Peacemaking Must Be Seen As Parts... Pragmatic pacifism and peacemaking must be seen as parts of a broad framework for building cultures of Peace at individual and community levels. But how exactly can individuals make a difference? Scholars of Peace such as John Paul Lederach [Led–er–rack] have identified three levels of leadership that are essential to peacebuilding. First is the top–level leadership which includes military, political, religious leaders with high visibility involved in high–level negotiations to resolve conflicts. Second, are middle ranged leaders respected in various sectors: ethnic and religious leaders, academics, intellectuals and humanitarian leaders involved in interventions such as problem–solving workshops, training in conflict resolution, and peace ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, it would be safer for both sides to oppose war despite both believing they are on that side which should resort to force in the quest for peace. Herein lies the central dilemma of deploying armed force in humanitarian interventions for peace. I have talked about the good that can be brought about by peacekeeping forces, even suggesting that the United Nations Peacekeeping force in Rwanda should have intervened more proactively to prevent the genocide in 1994. But we also know that military humanitarian interventions in the name bringing peace to a country in conflict can go horribly wrong. In 1994 President Clinton withdrew all US forces from the UN peacekeeping force in Somalia after eighteen US soldiers were killed and images of their dead bodies being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu were broadcast on television, horrifying and infuriating the American public. For those too young to remember this tragic episode, it is well documented in the Hollywood movie "Black Hawk Down." All UN forces in Somalia were subsequently withdrawn in 1995 leaving that country to spiral into two decades of chaos and lawlessness. Today, Somalia remains effectively a failed state. The Americans were not the only ones scarred by the well–intentioned international efforts to bring peace to Somalia. Mahatma Gandhi, a predominate figure and supporter of non–violence as a means of peace, explains how the only way to achieve reconciliation is through individual suffering. Likewise, the Dalai Lama, who is a leader of Buddhists and a user of a nonviolent approach, believes that peace is achieved by a liberation of pain and suffering from the individual, a necessary choice to make in order to have genuine love and passion. Like Gandhi, the Dalai Lama claims that one must also think of others while pursing happiness, which in turn leads to "wise self–interest," then "compromised self–interest," and finally to "mutual interest" (Barash 2014, 305). Remaining indifferent to others makes it harder for peace to be achieved, especially when emotions such as greed and jealously are involved. To the Dalai Lama conflicts only arise "from a failure to understand one another's humanness" (Barash 2014, 306). His main argument is that to reach peace there needs to be a universal understanding of others in order to be united. Furthermore, the Dalai Lama believes that if there is not a significant change in the efforts to achieve justice or harmony, this will continue to hurt the future ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. How Peacekeeping Operations Evolved Over Time Essay International peacekeeping efforts are a relatively new feature in military strategy. They have their roots in earlier conflicts, most notably the First Schleswig War between Denmark and Prussia in 1849–1850. A combined force of 3,800 troops from both Sweden and Norway with the intent of maintaining law and order and keeping the peace were assembled, while an armistice was worked out. This set the precedent for peacekeeping operations that would become more commonplace in the twentieth century. After the First World War, the League of Nations was established, the predecessor of what would later become the United Nations. The League was established in large part to hopefully avoid another world war as devastating as the Great War, as it was called. The League of Nations ultimately disbanded, giving way to the United Nations, but peacekeeping operations increased and evolved to encompass broader and more complex conflicts, including civil wars, which were ignored by the League out of respect for a nation's sovereignty. This brief summary will address how peacekeeping operations evolved over time and how these operations, or a specific operation, shapes the view of peacekeeping operations by the American people. The League of Nations was established as a means to ensure international peace and security through collective consultation and action. The early peacekeeping operations largely depended on precedents, which established the rules and strategies to be followed in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The United Nations : An Organization The United Nations peacekeeping forces were first used in 1948 to assist in Kashmir and Palestine. It is not mentioned in detail in the United Nations (UN) Charter this practise that later become known as peacekeeping , the word was formally used then during the 1956 Suez Canal Crisis in Egypt. The United Nations is increasingly criticised on the effectiveness of its peacekeeping mission, according to authors of the International Herald Tribune Shaukat Aziz and Luis Dias Diogo "The UN has the noblest of all mandates which is peace and human progress and prosperity". But according to author Blanchfield L. "The UN has been slow to implement reforms and that linking payment of US assessments to progress on UN reform is the most effective way to motivate member states to efficiently pursue comprehensive reform". The United Nations is an intergovernmental organisation which is there to promote international cooperation amongst member countries, this organisation replaced the failed League of Nations which was the brainchild of former American president Woodrow Wilson, established on the 24th of October 1945 after World War 2 its main aim is to prevent another global conflict. The UN is seen by its critics as an ineffective partly because of its failure to curb civil war conflicts around the worlds, the headquarters of the UN is situated in Manhattan New York but its main offices are in Geneva, Nairobi, and Vienna. • 27. I Am A Strong Believer Of Feminism And Lesbian Rights Hannah Sanders Peace Studies 27, September 2016 Peace Women Paper Peace Women I am a strong believer in feminism and lesbian rights. I chose to research five women from different places across the world who took a stand for lesbian rights. These ladies include: Zohl de Ishtar (Australia), Haya Shalom (Israel), Izabela Jaruga (Poland), Lo Sai "Rose" Wu (China, Hong Kong), and Chuen Juei Ho (China, Taiwan). The first peace woman I want to talk about is Zohl de Ishtar. Zohl is an "Australian lesbian who helps women in Australia on projects in communities and even world wide" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). By working on the international level she is able to work with a diverse number of people. "She has worked to eliminate nuclear weapons and militarism, campaigned to improve the rights of all peoples, defended cultural integrity and strived to end any form of discrimination, with an emphasis on sexuality" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). Zohl not only wants to help women with a so called unusual sexual orientation, but also the general public. The second peace woman I want to talk about is Haya Shalom from Israel. Haya is a feminist sponsoring human rights as a lesbian. "She is one of the most well–known women supporting women's unity for peace and women's rights" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). I respect Shalom for having such an impact on women's rights while being a lesbian. I cannot see the journey to gain rights being an easy task for her. I read that Shalom participated ... • 29. Gandhi Peace Reflection There are many events held in today's rapidly growing world which help in maintaining a better and more stable life for all of us. These events are held by various local, national, and international bodies which try to play their part in creating a positive impact on our society. Many people living near–by attend these occasions while organizers attempt to attract a larger audience through their special event–related activities. While all of these events appear to be different and unique from each other, they all share a common goal. This goal is how to create essential social change which would eventually lead to a more peaceful environment for all human beings in this world. In this paper, the event which I will be talking about is the 25th Annual Gandhi Peace Festival 2017 and will explain my views on how this particular event relates to the study of peace. As a part of this festival, I attended the public lecture on "Non–Violence, Women's Rights, and Social Justice" delivered by Shabana Azmi on October 2nd at the Hamilton Convention Centre. Shabana Azmi is an acclaimed Indian filmstar and social activist. She also was a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Population and Development and continues to work on social and public health issues. • 33. Crucial Confrontation In Billy Bud Sailor Crucial Confrontation Imagine having someone hate you with all their being. In the book, Billy Bud Sailor, the seemingly lovable Billy Bud, experienced exactly this. Immediately after coming aboard the Bellipotent, a war ship, the young handsome soldier hit it off with all his crew members. That is, all except one. Claggart, the master at arms, held a higher rank than Billy on the ship, however, for some unknown reason he hated Billy, and constantly sought out ways to make his life harder. One day, a wise old man came to the naïve Billy, telling him of Claggart's hatred towards him, and warning him to act cautiously around the master at arms. Claggart's disdain towards him, confuses Billy a great deal, as he refused to accept it for a significant matter of time. Everyone who reads this story wants Billy and Claggart to resolve their differences and get along. However, some believe the Billy confronted Claggart about the problem seemed the right approach, while others think he most definitely should not confront him. Billy should have confronted Claggart about his hatred. Claggart caused trouble for Billy, peace stood crucial for the ship, and the Bible showed support for this decision. Clearly Billy needed to confront Claggart about their issues. For starters, Claggart caused trouble for Billy. At the start of his hatred, Claggart acted friendly towards Billy, causing him not to suspect anything. This alone put Billy in danger, because he lived unaware of the malice ... The Lyrical Novel Border Town by Shen Congwen A lyrical novel has unique features such that its words are directed to the reader, appealing to the reader's emotions and feelings, while depicting a story which complements these emotions that is induced upon the reader. The idea behind a lyrical novel can be said to be a contradiction–novels focus on the explanation of the story plot, while lyrical novels are more about moral decisions, the expression of themes and how the surroundings can be integrated to show the character's mood. Hence, it can be said that it is the character's emotions that drives the development of the plot. Shen Congwen's Border Town can indeed be considered to be such a lyrical novel. Border Town was depicted to be a 'dreamlike' town, with its citizens enjoying peace generation after generation, like the flowing water in the river next to the town. The white pagoda stands tall, unwavering, symbolizing peacefulness and tranquillity. Border Town is widely considered to be a utopian–like story, with an interesting love twist, where two men are after the affections of the lead character. There are several features that resemble those of a lyrical novel. In the beginning of the story, a passage depicts the peacefulness of the town by the use of the setting of the town, with objects that are normally associated with beauty and serenity. Their echoes addressed the loyal citizens of Connecticut that the soldiers, remember what Governor Buckingham did for them during the time of the war, and are grateful for his respect to the loyal men that fought. However, they are also addressing the "peace men" that sympathized with the rebellion, and are determined to continue the struggle of fighting those who are against the Union and their country. • 41. The Just War Theory Of War As warfare strategies advance, the attitudes concerning the morality of war can change and lead the nation into unnecessary conflicts. The United States' views towards war from two different time periods display a shift when compared to a moral standard. Comparing these attitudes to the Just War Doctrine displays this change towards morality. The Just War Theory serves as a guideline for determining a war as moral. The Doctrine consists of three major principles that contain the criteria of just war. Jus ad bellum outlines the situations in which it is acceptable for a nation to go to war before any action has taken place. This includes that war must be directed towards a real and moral cause, authorized by qualified leaders, planned to settle the intended dilemma. Entering into war must be the "last resort" to solve the given situation and must be just compared to the enemy. Jus in bello addresses how a nation's forces should act during the act of war. This includes that the nation should respond to a situation with forces that are proportional to those that have been inflicted on the nation, and the prohibition of tactics such as rape and weapons of mass destruction (Fabre 963– 964). Just post bellum refers to the period after a war when peace is to be restored. It focuses on establishing treaties and preventing nations to seek vengeance (Stahn 159). Using this doctrine as the structure of moral war can determine a shift from this ideal state of morality. After World ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. The Just-War Theory Cause Dissension In The Church Just–War Theory Since the dawn of Christianity, thoughts of war, and the Christian conscience has been at odds. This was a major issue in the early Church and continues to cause dissension in the Church today. The Just–War theory, originated by St. Augustine, has developed throughout the ages in order to justify Christian war in the defense of peace and charity. The foundation of Just–War Theory lies in a two rode path, which allows an evil attendant to occur as it is separated from the good, which is intended. In the same way the Just War Theory justifies the murder of the enemy in order to bring peace to the situation and to resist the evil of the enemy. However, although it holds great importance, many see the Just–War Theory as a useless doctrine. Pacifists around the world have written about the inadequacies of the theory, primarily the theory's inconsistency with Christ's message of loving one's neighbor. ... Thus the proof is in the pudding, it is evident that a just–war protects national security. Accountability: After reviewing the just war theory in relation to the war in Iraq, it is assessed the Iraq war did not meet the requirements for the Iraq war. Michael Walzer stated that, 'the Iraq war was an unnecessary war and unnecessary wars are also unjust wars' (Religion and Ethics news weekly, 2009, Online). As a result, the Iraq war did not have a plausible cause or authorisation for intervention. Due to the failure to assess whether Iraq did conceal WMD, Weapons inspector David Kay argues that, 'If you cannot rely on good, accurate intelligence' then 'you can have a policy of pre–emption' (Hinnebusch, 2007, P.24). As a result, Iraq has become a case of 'imperial overreach' (Hinnebusch, 2007, P.24). Kay argues the US is able to bypass the UN authorisation by enforcing an imminent attack. As a result, political and military manipulation can indicate that the US can withhold extensive powers. For that reason, there has been a growing concern for accountable in terms for enforcing warfare. In particular, due to the nationwide protest against the Iraq war, political accountability has became an important factor in the democratic process. The government did not have support from the people. This implies that democracy can be questioned. For that reason, the public can hold a governmental official to account by changing them in the next general election. There have been varying views as to the definition of war, while others have a broader definition to include even conflicts at home, between family circle, within and out of the immediate family; others limit the concept of war to social phenomenon which occurs only between political communities or within intellectuals. In all war according to Encarta English dictionary is "a period of hostile relations between countries, states, or factions that leads to fighting between armed forces, especially in land, air or sea battles." While many have questioned the justification of war because it elicit tremendous cruelty and suffering, others have held high that war is "a peculiar human activity, in that it can bring out some of our best traits, such as courage and self–sacrifice." Or is war part of human nature that is inevitable? These and many other ethical issues and questions raised by war and what some define as just war will be considered in my paper. The Oxford Dictionary defines conflict "as an encounter with arms, a fight, especially a prolonged struggle", (as mentioned in Tillet, 1991, p.1). The Chinese symbol of crisis has two characters, one representing danger and the other representing opportunity, (Lantieri, L. & Patti, J.1996, p.53). Michael Banks claims that conflict is necessary, as it provides the catalyst for change and progress in society. Peace education's aim shouldn't be to abolish conflict, but to facilitate its healthy expression and to bring it within society's control, (as cited in Sandole & Sandole–Staroste, 1987, p. 260). Karl Marx was one the first people to analyse conflict, believing that people are creative and generally cooperative, but who face the tyranny of capitalism. Marx believed that conflict between the bourgeoisie (the owners of capital and means of production) and the proletariat (the working class) would lead to a revolution, whereby the workers would overthrow the owners, (Scimecca, 1993, p.214). John Burton speaks of conflict resulting from inherent basic human needs being unmet and as a perception of incompatible values between the parties, that can only be resolved through structural changes, (Tillet, 1991, ... I think some are more important than others are. I think the most important factors are as follows. Religion is a problems because throughout history there have been rivalries between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. Paramilitaries are a problem because they have a huge amount of control. Difference of opinions between people is a problem because it has been difficult to keep everyone happy. In September 2001, Catholic families were walking to school through a Protestant area. This caused problems for Protestants as they couldn't see a need for them to walk through their area, especially as they claim the same Catholics vandalise their properties. Throughout these recent events we can see why it has been difficult to bring peace to Northern Ireland. One reason for the obstacles in bringing peace is religion. Although the main argument is between Nationalists and Unionists, Nationalists are mainly Catholic and Unionists are mainly Protestant. Throughout history there has been an altercation between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland. I think this began because in the 17th Century, both Elizabeth I and James I gave English Protestants Irish Catholic rebel's land to increase the security in England. These five styles are: avoiding, accommodating, collaborating, compromising and attacking. It requires very little investment toward relationships, passivity and unassertiveness on the part of the avoider. However, this may be an appropriate response when others in conflict are too immature to respond well, when conflict cannot possibly result in positive outcomes or as a stalling tactic to allow time needed to settle emotions thus bringing clarity. Jean-Jacques Rousseau's The State of War Essay Jean–Jacques Rousseau's "The State of War" Jean–Jacques Rousseau's "The State of War" elegantly raises a model for confederative peace among the states of Europe, and then succinctly explains its impossibility. Rousseau very systematically lays out the benefits of such a "perpetual peace" through arguments based only in a realism of pure self–interest, and then very elegantly and powerfully turns the inertia of the self– interest machinery against the same to explain why it can never come to be. However, this final step may be a bit too far; in his academic zeal for the simple, I will argue that he has overlooked the real, or at least ignored the possible. His conclusion may be appealingly reasoned, but it is still insupportable. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While refuting the possibility that this international state of nature is a Hobbesian war of all against all [which would tend to the destruction of the species, an aim he finds both logically and religiously untenable (114)], he certainly acknowledges that conflicts occur even among actors whom we would call naturally virtuous those seeking peace (112). This contradiction is problematic because the boundaries between the civil and the natural, the domestic and the international, overlap at times (112). For instance, war on the outside invariably affects the civic order on the inside. Because of this contradiction, we are forced to bear the burdens of supporting both orders separately, thus negating the advantages brought by either. We are subject to the vagaries of the international system when it affects civil life, and yet as individuals our hands are tied and we are unable to enjoy natural freedom ourselves because we are also subject to the authority, at times oppressive, of the civil domestic structures (which, as we have seen, fail to protect us from all international affects) (112). Even a state that hopes for the status quo can't count on it because other states won't allow it to remain (114). Peace is often lacking even among virtuous actors, but peace and war are not dichotomous. A state of war results when two actors mutually decide that their existences are incompatible, and each coolly resolves to annihilate the other however possible, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. The Ever Increasing Urgancy for World Peace The 20th century can be credited as being one of the most violent times in recorded history. There were over 98 million war related deaths, which is about six times the combined deaths of both the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Orwell conveys each of these killings as "one mind less, one world less." World peace would be an important goal to work towards. Many wanted to achieve world peace, however, there were many different visions for how this could be accomplished. Despite the many anti–war actions that occurred during the previous centuries, the twentieth century marks the conception of an organized approach to global peace. Advocates of world peace believed that with an ever increasing connected world, military advances, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first conference, for which the United States took an active role enacted three treaties. The first, establishing the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The second treaty outlined the treatment of prisoners and the citizens where the war was present. The third treaty focuses on the protection of marked medical units and requires them to treat the wounded of the both sides of the conflict. Focusing on the first treaty, arbitration was a natural for U.S. advocates of peace, dating back to the Jay Treaty (1794). The process of arbitration allowed the U.S. to extend legal concepts to foreign relations, without compromising U.S. freedom of action. One of the earliest arms control conferences was the Washington Disarmament Conference, organized by Charles Evans Hughs who sought the promotion of peace via disarmament and outlawry of war. With the U.S. being a world power, though arbitration, the U.S. could levy this power with conflicting parties in hope of peace. During this time, reduction of armament was an integral part of the Republicans' diplomatic strategy.5 During the Washington Conference, Hughes pulled off a diplomatic tour de force, one of the first major international agreement on arms reduction that has yet to be negotiated.6 After months of negotiations, five countries agree to limit their number of battleships, establishing a 5:3:3 ratio in battleship tonnage to the United States and a reduction in ... • 67. Kevin Rudd's Speech In The Stolen Generation In February of 2008, on behalf of The Australian Parliament, Prime Minister of the time, Kevin Rudd, presented a speech directed towards "the Stolen Generation". This extract addresses the horrific losses that the Indigenous community has endured in the recent past, acknowledging the mistreatment and offering stories of the abuse. In the context of an influential speech, the correct use of language is essential. When attempting to persuade listeners to agree with them, speakers must use a particular type of vocabulary, known as emotive language, to evoke certain emotions within the listeners. Emotive language often uses words that would be categorized as biased, and in a way, manipulates onlookers to feel sympathetic towards the speaker. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only does this technique reinforce clarity, but it also emphasizes the point that is being discussed. Throughout the speech, Rudd continues to use words such as "sorry" and "apologise", as a way of expressing his resentment towards what had happened in the past. For example, the word "sorry" is used at the start of many sentences, in which, these sentences are all of the same format. Rudd begins each of these phrases with a single word, in this case, the word is "sorry", then continues to justify his argument, finishing each sentence off with a reason for his use of the repeated word. He also structures his sentences in a way that is easier to be heard, keeping any sentence that uses the repetition technique short. "Sorry for the physical suffering... Sorry for the tragedy, the absolute tragedy, of childhoods lost... Sorry for all these injustices to you...". By repeating these keywords, the message Rudd is trying to deliver will stick in people's minds a lot more than if he were only to say the phrase ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Horrors Of The Holocaust And The Holocaust Through history we have seen countless times when religion is used as a basis to wage war on another country. In WW2 Hitler used hate for the Jewish people in Germany to gather support and attempt to wipe out the Jewish race on German soil. Looking back at this war we see some of the terrible things that the German's did to these Jewish people in concentration camps as well as the thousands just murdered in cold blood. In the US not only did we refuse to go to war in the beginning of WW2 but we sold weapons to both sides of the war. It really wasn't until the bombing of pearl harbor that we actually decided to join and fight with the allies. Up until we joined the war we had never really had any reason to believe that the rumors about what the Germans were doing to the Jewish people were true at all. However, the US soon learned of the morally wrong things that were taking place in Germany. The Nazis were able to gain followers by falsely blaming the Jewish people for hardships that were taking place in Germany. Claiming victim to around 17 million people(source), the Holocaust is one of the biggest genocides in the history of our planet. Not only was the suppression of another religion against what is believed in the Catholic religion, but the Nazis also forced the Jewish people to work and essentially be slaves until they were murdered in different internment camps. These camps are some of the most modern morally awful things that have been carried out in our recent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Essay on Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger Consequences come from choices individuals make, such as waking up in the morning at a specific time in order to avoid traffic. However, even if the decisions are not made by the individual, they still have to suffer the consequences of those decisions made by others. Take, for instance, the choice that someone makes to drink and drive while under the influence. If that person kills someone, then his decision impacts the lives of everyone involved and not just himself. A theme in Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger, is that people must accept the consequences of their actions because it influences the direction they go in life. This theme is developed through the character of Jeremiah, the conflict between Davy and the law, and the symbolism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jeremiah's intervention is observed when he insists, "breathe ....breathe! .... Reuben Land, in the name of the living God I am telling you to breathe" (Enger, p. 3). Jeremiah ordered his son to breathe, even though twelve minutes had passed since he was dead; however, when he orders Reuben to come back to life, he says that in the name of God he must resuscitate. Reuben was not destined to live, and because his father's choice went against what was supposed to happen, Reuben must live an asthmatic life that limits what he is able to do. Ultimately, Enger portrays how all decisions have consequences, and many times the results will not be the expected ones. The conflict presented between Davy and the law depicts that people must take responsibility for the consequences of their actions. Davy is Reuben's independent older brother. While only seventeen years old, he always gives the appearance of an adult fully capable of caring for himself. He has a mind of his own and does not want anybody telling him what to do. Davy's independence seems to follow his dad's advice, which is shown at the end of the first chapter when Jeremiah tells his children, "We and the world, my children will always be at war. Retreat is impossible. Arm yourselves" (Enger, p.4). Jeremiah advises his children that life is difficult, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. The Aborigines Protection Amending Act of 1915 The Aborigines Protection Amending Act of 1915 B) Argue against the Protection Act I have chosen to argue question B, because I am against The Protection Act. The protection act was passed in 1897, where the chief protector, who was in charges and their guarding, he was allowed to remove children from their families. In 1971 the Aboriginal Protection Act stopped. The act gave the power to remove any child without any court order nor parental consent. The act provided full control, and therefore the Aborigines would lose their freedom. The government removed Aboriginal children from their families and where starting the process that created the Stolen Generation, also known as the Stolen Children. The article The Stolen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the British colonization of Australia in 1788 began, certain social problems started to appear, some of witch let to alcoholism, poverty etc. This can be related to the Protection Act; Archie Roach was taken from his family because he had a white grandfather. Roach knows what the Aboriginal children were going through. In 14 years he thought that both of his parents was dead, because he had been told that they was killed in a fire. Then Roach received a letter from his sister, witch said that his mother had past away a week ago. Roach has been lied to his whole life, so he ran away. Now he is 45 years old, and his life has led to alcoholism. The Protection Act has affected many Aborigines children. An example from Carol, personal story in Bringing Them Home Report; "Four generations of my family went without parently love, without mother or father. I myself found it very hard to show any love to my children because I wasn't given that, so was my mother and grandmother". This shows that it does not only affect one generation but several generations. Because they have not experienced motherly love, they cannot pass it on to their own children. The lady Zita Wallace still remembers "the coarse texture of the blanket" from the time she was torn away from her family and sent to live in an orphanage run by white people.
