A Letter Of Termination And On The Birth Announcement Of A...
Helvetica is all around us and it's like oxygen, you have no choice but to take it in. . The appeal for a
clean, professional, and timeless typeface is undeniable. From Fortune 500 logos, to local street
signs, Helvetica holds the spot for most widely used font choice to designers and amateur designers
alike. What made Helvetica so popular and, why, over 50 years later, does it still retain its
popularity? Why does Helvetica work equally effective for both a letter of termination and on the
birth announcement of a child? Typography which is the arrangement and interaction of letters on a
page is influenced by culture, history, and technology. By exploring these three aspects in relation to
Helvetica one will be able to get a better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The foundations of the International Typographic Style can be traced to two art schools, the Zurich
School of the Applied Arts and the School of Design in Basel, who taught a curriculum in which
form follows function.
The 1950s saw a boom of the International style when it was epitomized with the creation of several
new san–serif type families. The geometric fonts on the 1920s and 30s was rejected in favor of
designs inspired by Akzidenz Grotesk fonts. Two fonts would soon take the world by storm. In 1954
a Swiss designer working in Paris by the name of Adrian Frutiger created a family of 21 san–serif
fonts which he named, Univers. At the same time, back in Switzerland Edouard Hoffman of the
Haas type foundry in Switzerland felt that the Akzidenz Grtotesk fonts should be refined and
upgraded. Hoffman had been waiting for the right moment to release a new typeface and in 1956 he
contacted Max Miedinger, who had worked with him at Haas and had since branched out as a
freelance consultant and designer to help create the new typeface for Haas. Hamburgers. No, not the
food, the word. Miedinger began to create a new typeface by working out the letters in the word,
hamburgers, a word that includes all stylistic variations of letters. First working on pencil and paper
and then creating photographic reproductions Miedinger set out to create

An Analysis Of Suicide Note By Janice Mirikitani
The term Asian American refers to an extremely diverse group of people, with varying cultures,
histories, views of mental illness, and views of suicide. It has been estimated that almost 50 distinct
Asian American ethnic groups speaking 30 different languages reside in the United States alone,"
(Hapa). Many Asian Americans are very traditional family's "Asian Americans are more likely than
other Americans to value "marriage, parenthood, hard work and career success" (Saw) . The poem
Suicide Note by Janice Mirikitani, is a poem about a young Asian–American who commits suicide
by jumping out of her dormitory window in college. Later someone in the poem finds a suicide note
that the main character leaves behind explaining why she committed ... Show more content on

A lot of children that come from an Asian culture background a prefer to die then to have a bad
grade in school. The thinking of suicide comes from "The pressure to succeed and the shame that
results from the failure to do so, which are associated with psychological distress and suicide, have
been documented among youth in Asian countries, such as Sri Lanka, China and Japan" (Saw).
Furth more this example shows us that many Asian American culture hate to seea family member
bring shame to their family and would rather them to not fail in life but to always succeed. In the
poem Suicide Note the main character explains in her Note that she is "not smart enough" (Kirszner
l.3) The main character feels that she is not smart in enough in school. In a summary before the
poem the author explains that "Her suicide note contained an apology to her parents for having
received less than a perfect four–point grade average" (Kirszner 683). This example shows that the
main character had to have a great grade in school if not she would not feel content with herself.
Education is one of the most important goals in a life of an Asian American citizen and if not
accomplished very well could result in Depression or even Suicide. Janice Mirkikitnia poem Suicide
Note, also shows the parental expectations are high for Asian American children. A research
conducted concluded that "Asian Americans reported that they

Asymmetricistic Impact On Graphic Design
THE IMPACT OF THE INTERNATIONAL TYPOGRAPHIC STYLE ON WEB DESIGN
INTRODUCTION The International Typographic Style, or Swiss Style, invokes to the graphic
design movement that emerged in Switzerland during the 1950s, after the Second World War, in a
particular social, economical and industrial context.
Through emphasizing clarity of information, the International Style is characterized by a range of
specific visual hallmarks. This movement is especially marked by the creation and use of grids and
sans–serif typefaces.
Admired for its simple, clean, factual, neutral and highly mathematical structured approach to
organizing and presenting information, it became a new revolution in the world of graphic design
and especially in web design. Indeed, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It serves as a framework for designers to organize their information and make it clear. Inspired by
the Constructivism approach, Swiss designers preferred asymmetrical layouts and used the grid as
an organization tool to provide an overall orderly and unified structure.
The grid serves as an armature on which designers can organize text and images in a rational, easy
to absorb manner.
– The use of photography is another important characteristic of this movement. Swiss designers
were influenced by the modernist idea in which photography was a better tool to show reality than
drawings and illustrations.
– Keeping white spaces is essential for Swiss designers because it helps to perceive the different
groups of the content. In a format, the right amount of white spaces at the good places can create a
first good impression and can motivate visitors to read through the web page. So, white spaces are
important for a good design and the Swiss style design lays a lot of emphasis on it. This style
promotes the use of big white spaces between texts to differentiate them and to give a boost to the
whole design. It also suggests the use of white spaces between images to improve the look of the

Historical Implication of Hydropower Essay
Hydropower has many applications are a clean and cheap way to efficiently bring power to devel–
oping countries. The use of small hydro, specifically both micro and pico hydro, can power a small
village or group of houses with little to no environmental impact. Systems have been successfully
implemented in both Brazil and other developing countries. The social and geographic character–
istics of this region make it a perfect place to implement policy regarding the integration of small
hydro into the rural setting. The first segment of this report will seek to outline the historical
implications of small hydro power, define relevant terms and theory, while also giving a geographic

Small Hydropower Projects
Hydropower in Brazil

While CRELUZ does generate a profit every year, members of the co–op decide how this revenue is
spent. Most of the money is reinvested in new projects or main– tenance for existing ones. This
reinvestment has a direct positive impact on the community members it serves and is a plausible
model for future endeavors in providing ac– cessible, cheap hydroelectricity.
All of these projects are designed to have low environ– mental impacts and be sustainable and easy
to maintain. Since they are mini–hydro projects, large head heights (and thus large dams) are not
required [9]. Most of these 6 turbine projects favor weirs over dams which cause much less damage
to both the river and the surround– ing wildlife and fish population. An example of one of these
small, low impact dams can be seen in FIG. 1. The design of these system also includes many
failsafes to help aid in environmental protection. Like many small hydro plants, CRELUZ's projects
include fish passes and flood controls [6].
FIG. 1: Dam and bridge at Usina Granja Velha built by CRELUZ. [6]
Again, much like other small hydro projects, there is a rack at the inlet of the penstock to prevent
debris from entering. However, these projects are somewhat unique in their approach to disposing of
this waste. All biowaste is used to make compost, while all plastic bottles and de– bris are recycled

Adrian Frutiger: One Of The Most Influential Typeface...
Adrian Frutiger is undeniably one of the most Influential typeface designers of the 20th century
even in the world of digital typeface. During the 50 years of his professional management, he has
designed over 30 typefaces. He has also worked for IBM and type manufacturing companies such as
Linotype and Westiform. His Univers and Frutiger typefaces in the world of visual communication
and typography are among the most renowned works of design. Adrian Frutiger was born in 1928 in
Interlaken, a town near the Swiss Alps. He learned various handwriting methods in his youth and
since then, with his father's recommendation, became interested in print and sculpture to such an
extent that years later he stated that recognizing different angles in sculpture has greatly helped him
in designing various letterforms. In regards to his interest in type, Adrian Frutiger says, "Everything
started from the day when I visited a German typesetter. I saw how he placed letters upside down
next to each other with unparalleled skill and that how one can express his knowledge with twenty–
six letters. In different Latin languages one can speak about everything, legible to all. That's how I
wrote my first sentence by the method Gutenberg had invented whom I had not even heard of in
high school". After a period of training, he studied in Zurich School of ... Show more content on

and its tag line rings so clearly in my mind "the world on time" whether it be the truck arriving at
your house to deliver a much anticipated package, or being warehouse personnel watching a truck
marked with the bold graphic speed off with a sense of urgency, its graphic is iconic and could be
recognized at a glance. Formerly known as Federal Express when the company began, it is
remarkable that unlike so many other large companies, FedEx has only rebranded it's self once since
its birth.
The concept of Federal Express was born in 1965, when founder Fred Smith wrote a paper outlining
to logistics needed to get important shipments around the country in record time, he received an
average grade. Flash ahead 6 years, Federal Express Corporation is born. (Time Flies: The FedEx

featured the company's name in a diagonal position on a blue and white background. The company's
immense success as a huge global delivery firm led to a highly innovative redesign and a massive
advertising campaign to support it" (Alexander). Somewhat staying true to the original logo, Leader

Bilingual Course, Essentials Of The Learning Sciences Essay
We had the 13th Class yesterday for the bilingual course "Essentials of the Learning Sciences", and
the topic of this week was about "Problem Based Learning (PBL)". We were the discussion group,
and it was the last time for our group to play the teacher roles in this bilingual course. Before the
class, I made a tremendous effort in preparation for the class; reading the Chapter 15 of the
CHLSv2, and searching for some definitions of some vocabularies. As results of the lack knowledge
in this chapter I tried to find other primary resources related to the topics, I found more than ten
books about PBL and many papers related to the learning theories in PBL context, so I learn a lot
from other resources rather from the chapter 15. In addition, we were working collaboratively, we
met many times discussed our work, I provided some feedback and they appreciate during the
designing process. That is a good itself to learn and interact with others across the cultures; we are
applying some knowledge in an actual situation.  What has happened in the class? Miss GAO
Qian started our class by going over last week's homework, then she started introducing the first part
of the chapter 15 which was about the definition and the two examples of PBL. Second, I introduced
a brief history and some theoretical background about PBL. After the break, Miss LI Ang was talked
about the design, implementation, assessment, and the effect of PBL. She also discussed the
similarities and differences

Introduction
Traditionally, the American diet has been defined by meat, potatoes, and white bread. As of late,
Americans are gaining awareness about the importance of a diet that is more nutritious than meat
and potatoes. This is partly due to highly publicized information on foods that claim to be beneficial
to our overall health. Articles and news reports let us know about the most current study on diet and
how it relates to athletic ability, mental acuity and general well–being. Another area that has
received much attention is how diet is connected to disease prevention.
Many medical reports are recommending diets that are low in fat and ... Show more content on

Before we can begin the journey of disease prevention, we must ask, "How did we get to this
point?"
Dietary History in America
To get an idea about how the cancer rates in America correlate with eating patterns, I will give a
little history of dietary habits. Traditionally, food was an integral part of life. Life revolved around
food because life revolved around survival. (Cancer, 7) Before the Industrial Revolution, local
resources had to be relied upon for sustenance. There were no major highways for transporting food
and other goods. This meant that most homesteads were self–sustainable. Farming was done to
provide food for the members of the family and the farm animals. Most meals were prepared on a
daily basis from scratch because there were very few food storage options. (Cancer, 11)
The types of food that were eaten during the 1800 's were rather simple. Vegetables and grains were
the basis for each meal because they could easily be grown by each family. Meat and other animal
products were rarely eaten because it was too expensive to raise animals for meat. Animals were
needed to help with farming tasks. The idea of using farm space to grow food for animals so that the
animals could then be eaten was seen as wasteful. This is part of the reason that meat was associated
with wealth. Those who had more than enough could afford to use some of their land to raise
animals for meat. (Macrobiotic, 25)
The Industrial Revolution brought machinery, factories, and

Body Surface Are A Comparison Of Different Methods
Reflection: Comparison of methods I chose two methods during this investigation to find my surface
area; one of them was using the body parts as shapes, which was useful as I was able to rely on
already made formulas to find the surface area of my skin. The other method was to use tight clothes
that fit my body tightly, that way I could measure the height x width of the cloth. I was able to find
my body surface area from these methods quite easily. I would say the easiest one to perform was
the 1st method, which was using body parts as shapes, I say this because it was easier to use
formulas of different types of shapes, and the results would be closer to my actual body surface area,
since I was able to use shapes that looked like my body parts. On the other hand using clothes was
not a bad option as it gave a more general surface area, compared to the other method. Altogether,
the only downside that both methods have is that there is room to be a bit more accurate. For
example, I could have used different shapes that are more related to the specific body part, which
could have given in total an accurate body surface area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first answer was 1.9 m2 while the other is 1.5 m2. That is 0.4 m2 difference from these two
methods. In fact, both answers are close is 1.6 m2, which is the average body surface area of a
female. With this information provided, I can determine that it's likely that using tight clothing is
more accurate than the other method, which makes sense as the focus of this method was to closely
cover the entire

Analysis Of The Poem ' Avec Le Livre Imprime '

Stoicism In Marcus Aurelius's 'Meditations'
An Ideal World
(An analysis of the use of stoicism in Marcus Aurelius's, "Meditations") Stoicism is defined in
Greek school of Philosophy as teaching that "virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge, and
that the wise live in harmony with divine reason that governs nature, and are indifferent to the
vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain." (Oxford). Virtue is a trait sought after by many in
today's society. It is also a trait that millions upon millions of people choose to ignore. It all depends
on what is important or unimportant to that particular person. To have virtue is an honor, and
something that one cannot give to another. Those that are wise know that virtue, or justice, is an
essential characteristic to have in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Naturally, horrible and crude things might happen to certain people. These things should be
expected and even anticipated. Nonetheless, the world goes about in its own way, and men must
reciprocate this natural idea. Men are more than capable of knowing the difference between an
action that is just and one that is unjust.
Individual freedom and control is also given very much emphasis in regards to stoicism in Marcus
Aurelius's, "Meditations". This idea is self–explanatory; men have control over themselves and have
the power to direct their thoughts and views. "You have power over your mind – not outside events.
Realize this, and you will find strength." (Meditations). As men are able to control their own
thoughts, they can start focusing in on things that truly matter. They can focus on more virtuous
things. Philosophers have learned to control their minds and see truths that others in the world are
hidden from. If these philosophers can find a way to share this information with as many people as
possible, then they will have achieved their ultimate goal. These philosophers are usually the ones to
be leaders of a nation. They are chosen to lead because of their understanding of how to help
everybody live together in harmony and unity. As strong philosophers develop sturdy governments,
it is difficult not to see how these fundamental principles are so foundational for success. Marcus
Aurelius is spot on in stating that

A High-Voltage Compliant Microelectrode Array Driver for...
2.5
High–voltage switching
A fundamental component of this microelectrode driver is a high–voltage switch and it is necessary
to characterize the implemented switch for different stimulation current levels. An analog CMOS
switch can be an n–type or p–type MOSFET which is operated either in cut–off (OFF state) or
ohmic region
(ON state). The switch can be characterized by a fixed linear transconductance, gds , which is
strongly signal–dependent and expressed according to Eq. 8 [37] where, μn and μp are electron and
hole mobility respectively in two types of transistors, Cox is the gate–oxide capacitance, W n and W
p are the dimensions of transistors, VDD is the power supply
L
L voltage, and Vin is the input signal. The bulk of NMOS and PMOS transistors are connected to the
highest potential, VDD and the lowest potential, VSS respectively. The limitations are that the
maximum voltage an NMOS and the minimum voltage a PMOS can pass are [VDD − Vthn ] and
|Vthp | respectively.
This drawback can be overcome using CMOS transmission gate (TG) which exhibits lower overall
transconductance. Another advantage of using TG based switch is that it passes good '1' (or logic
level high) and good '0' (logic level low) without any threshold voltage drop, or in other words, TG
gate switch allows rail–to–rail swings. The transconductance of TG gate switch is expressed by the
following equation: The on resistance RsON of the switch is the reciprocal of its transconductance,
gdsON and given by

Kerouac was a devoted student of the Buddhist way and would often impress his peers with his
knowledge of the Sutras and other Buddhist texts and ideas. This is particularly interesting when it
is considered that these peers were other students of Buddhism such as Gary Snyder or even Philip
Whalen, who is an ordained Zen monk. In fact, Kerouac was so immersed in Buddhist thought that
in 1956 he completed the manuscript to what would become a 420 page book titled Some Of The
Dharma, which was a collection of notes and thoughts on various ideas taken from the Sutras.
Included also were numerous poems and prose poems, which were attempts to transliterate the
ancient wisdom of Buddhism into a modern context, applicable to the western intellectual and
spiritual journeyman. Some of the Dharma was to be a study guide for the beginning practice of
Kerouac’s good friend and companion Allen Ginsberg.
While Kerouac was writing what was perhaps his best and certainly one of his most spiritually
driven novels, Desolation Angels, he was also writing a poem to accompany the novel which was
titled Desolation Blues. Although written after Kerouac was no longer up on Desolation Peak
serving as a fire lookout in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, it was a reflection upon the many
contemplations provoked by the solitude and serenity of the time he spent alone atop the mountain.
From the opening line he has recognized an inherently Buddhist view of the world

Comparing Hegel, Marx, Kant's Views on Pantheism Essay
Comparing Hegel, Marx, Kant's Views on Pantheism 1.Hegel is a pantheist, meaning that he
believes that everytng toeather comes to being God. Subsequently he believes that everythenig is
one, menatin gtat reason and reality actually are the same thing, fuirtheremore Hegel believst that
reality is reason, this is his "first Principle". In contrast to this Kant believes that all we really know
are our persc=eptions of the real (Nominal world) and tat we cannot really knowanything aobut the
real world. So our reason, though it lets us perceive reality it in fact changes reality, so our reason is
not our reality. This is why Kant believes that reason isn't our first principle, and that we cannot in

Kant believes that evertythnging is the nouminal world, and the we are perscieveing theis nouminal
wourld though our lens which we call reason (Or concepts). We then use our senses to interpret what
we are percieveing. He came to this conclusion when he was trying ot find a synthesis between
hume and Descares. Descartes was wrong in his thinking, or at least is is evident that there is
something missing from his rationalist thinking. Kant used to believe this but after reading the
empirist remarks of Hume he began to see the need for use of our sensory perceptions within reality
as well. So the synthesis is that all knowledge comes from the combination of conepts and intuitions
(reason and sensory perceptions), without reason we would have no lens to perceive what the
nominal wourld is telling us, and without senses we would have no way of understanding what our
reason is telling us. But even with this we need to remember that the best that we can do is perceive
what is, but that does not determine what something is, the nominal would exists beyond our
perception and is still a mystery. This leaves open room for metaphysics, because God, and our souls
can still exist beyond our plain of sensory, or reason. 2. both Kierkegaard and Marx disagreed with

in a huff. Getting into the University of California in Irvine took some doing. I fled Wesleyan with a
D grade point average. I withdrew from one class and received an F in two other classes, but
received an A in my speech class. I gave my speech final on "Why I was leaving Wesleyan." Even
though I went fifteen minutes over the speech limit, (and we were warned to never do that in her
class,) the teacher gave me the top grade for my inexorable passion. When my application to UCI
was rejected that summer on the basis of poor grades, I used my usual rhetoric to get my foot in the
door. Then came the million dollar question: "Where are you going to get the money to pay for
tuition?" asked the Dean of Admissions. Armed with a barrage of words, I looked him in the eyes
and questioned how an educational in–stitution could deny any red–blooded American student an
opportunity for higher learning on a technicality like lack of money. I ended with: "Do you want to

Xenophobia In America
Introduction
The large number of people crossing international borders has been well publicized in the twenty
first century, (Marsella & Ring, 2003; Sloan, 2005). Immigration increases have often been
accompanied by negative attitudes toward the migrants (Yakushko, 2009). Immigration has been the
subject of many political debates in countries throughout the world (Munro, 2006; Crush &
Ramachandran, 2010). Xenophobia in the United States and the European Union has been
publicized and recorded, (Smith & Edmonston, 1997;; Pettigrew, 1998, Finzsch & Schirmer, 2002).
This phenomenon is also occurring in Asia, Africa, and Latin America but probably not as well
known. (e.g., Crush, 2001; Vale, 2002).

The Influential Typeface Helvetica
The influential typeface Helvetica, a neo–grotesque1 sans serif type design, came into being in the
early 1950s – after the Second World War. The expectation of the designers, Edouard Hoffman and
Max Miedinger was to create a neutral typeface that had great clarity, no intrinsic meaning in its
form and could be used on a wide variety of signage to remake a new identity apart from the past ().
Originally named as Neue Haas Grotesk, the typeface was changed to Helvetica in 1960. Today,
Helvetica, as an aesthetics constant, although not perfect, mastered the quantum leap in 1957 from
metal type to the digital age of word processing. Axel Langer, a curator of Islamic Near Eastern Art,
mentioned it as 'an impersonal typeface for today and tomorrow ().'

The original design was released by Linotype in 1957. Since its launch, the typeface had been
worked on by a variety of designers to adapt it for successive methods of composition, from hot
metal to photocomposition to digital. Given the technical limitations of methods, the character
weights, widths and spacing were inconsistent and compromised.
Neue Helvetica, as the outcome of technological changes, was designed in 1983, represents a
synthesis of aesthetics and technical refinements and modifications that resulted in improved
usefulness: a number of characters were subtly changed to be more consistent and more harmonious
with the overall design characteristics. For instance, the x–height has been adjusted to appear
visually the same in all weights. The x–heights in previous versions were all the same, but since type
tends to look shorter as it gets heavier, the new x–heights compensate for this optical illusion.
Besides, the crossbars on the lowercase 'f' and 't' were widened to increase the legibility in text.
Additionally, the Neue Helvetica family was extended to 51 weights in all, which are many more

Max Miedinger was born December 24, 1910 in Zurich Switzerland. His career as a typeface
designer spanned some 54 years. He began studying at the Kuntsgewerbeschule after training as a
typesetter from 1926 until 1930. He worked at several positions until 1956 when he became a
freelance graphic designer. About a year later, he developed Helvetica in collaboration with Edouard
Hoffman.
The creation made by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann was originally titled Neue Haas
Grotesk, but this title was changed in 1960 in an attempt to market it internationally. It has been
even more successful since. Helvetica has since grown to be widely used and developed into several

The film Helvetica debuted at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2007. Since that time, the

looks at the whole picture and describes the impact that typefaces like Helvetica have in our lives

This film not only goes so far as to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the typeface but also goes on to
use Helvetica as a catalyst to a conversation that speaks of graphic design and our society as a
whole, and how it reacts to typography and the visual images we are bombarded with daily.
Neue Helvetica is a reworking of the typeface with a more structurally unified set of heights and
widths. It was developed at D. Stempel AG, a Linotype subsidiary. The studio manager was

Chapter 1: The Photovaltacic Systems Essays
Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Sun is the ultimate source of energy. Life on earth would not exist
without the heat and light provided by the Sun. Harnessing the energy from the sun for hot water

Catcher in the Rye
Innocence, Compassion, and some ‘Crazy' Cliff A novel, which has gained literary recognition

The Catcher in the Rye is in its entirety a unique connotation of the preservation of innocence and
the pursuit of compassion. With certain elegance the writer J.D. Salinger, substantiates the growth
and perils, which lie between childhood and adulthood. Embellishing the differentiation between
innocence and squalor in the grasps of society. The bridge that lies between these contrasting themes
are personified through the novel's protagonist, Holden Caul–field and his visualization of a cliff,

Ramachandra Rao: "First of all, it is a savior image, and shows us the extent of Holden's re–
ligious idealism. Secondly, it crystallizes for us Holden's concept of good and evil; childhood is
good, the only pure good, but it is surrounded by perils, the cliff of adolescence over which the
children will plunge in the evil of adulthood unless stopped. But finally, the image is based on a
mis–understanding. The Burns poem goes ‘If a body meet a body' not ‘if a body catch a body,' and
the fact that Phoebe is aware of this and Holden is not, plus the manner in which these two words
(‘catch' and ‘meet') are re–examined and re–interpreted by Holden at the end of the novel, shows
us in a powerful and deeply suggestive way the center of Holden's diffi–culty." Holden's view
of life as it is and the way life should be is based on a misunder–standing of man's place in society.
Having difficulty coming to grips with this misunder–standing, Holden crosses a threshold. Later he
fatefully comes in contact with his sister once again, at the Central Park carrousel in the final scene
of the novel. At the sight of his sister he is overcome by a love for all people when he sees how
much his sister cares about him. Domenic Bruni, incorporates this theme in his statement:
"Holden has accepted a new position—an undiscriminating love for all mankind. He even

J. C. Penny Organizational Culture
The culture at J. C. Penny before Johnson can be described as inclusive and employee centered. The
organizational culture can perhaps be described as a hierarch culture. A hierarchy culture has an
internal focus and produces more formalized and structured work environment (Kreitner, p. 70). The
founder, James Cash Penny, managed his stores under the philosophy of providing the best customer
service at the best price. He truly believed in giving his customers the best deal possible. The
company continued to thrive under this basic tenant, but started to lose its market share and overall
appeal in the early 2000s as the internet and small specialty stores like H&M and the GAP started to
attract more of their customers.

C. Penny's over 100–year presence in the retail industry, any organizational change would require
careful and thoughtful planning. Edgar Schein, former professor at MIT Sloan School of
Management and Organizational Behavior scholar notes that changing organizational culture
involves a teaching process (Kreitner, p. 74). This process is beneficial for both the existing
employees and new leadership. One of the processes that I would have recommended to Johnson at
the beginning of his term with J.C. Penny would be the organizational activities, processes or
outcomes that leaders pay attention to, measure, and control. The behavior of Johnson and his new
management team suggested that they rejected learning about the existing culture at J.C. Penny and
how and why things are done the way they were. To meet the objectives of the board of directors,
the immediate focus was to focus on what he thought the customer wanted...a method that was
proven to be successful at Apple, but failed at J.C. Penny. Had he spent time getting to know his
employees and explained his vision for J.C. Penny, he would have received valuable information on
not just the how, but what why things are done in the manner they are done. Why it was important to
keep the coupons that customers loved to use. Johnson knew the history of James Cash Penny and
thought that his "Fair and Square" pricing strategy was all that was needed to transform the
company. But he failed to truly understand Mr. Penny's philosophy the Golden Rule where you find

Survey will be used as a first and main part of the research, I wanted to reach high number of
respondents which meant larger amount of data (Saunders et al, 2009). In most cases survey is using
as a deductive approach (Saunders et al, 2009). Another reason why survey was se–lected as Muijs
(2004) explained that it guarantees participants anonymity. Lastly survey was chosen as it doesn't
require long and deeply–thought answers, as otherwise it would be really hard to collect the required
number of participants. Lastly decision to select surveys were also influenced by past academic
researchers (Abdolvand, 2016; Quellet, 2007; Obermiller and Spangenberg, 1989; Curran and
Zignago, 2012) which based their research methodology on surveys.
3.3.2.1 Survey Design
Most powerful determinant which influenced this survey design was the number of partici–pants
which I could target with it. Another important aspect was that it allowed consumers to answer the
questions without spending too much time and questions themselves were easily answerable. Layout
of my survey were selected in accordance to previous academic research which were studied in

China's official policy concerning the size of the family by its mere existence is a viola–tion of basic

them are an only child with an exception of one who had two other siblings; meaning that the family
had to pay the government for two "extra" children. The students and I were talking about our
families and I mentioned that I have three other siblings and their reaction was that of shock due to

to contribute 65%, 25% and 10% toward the overall coca production globally. Since then, due to

how well the leader's traits fit context's requirements. Although the trait theories have limitations,
they still suggest scholars to consider the personality traits as core component of a leadership.

The Downfall Of Classroom Civility
The Downfall of Classroom Civility Incivility is disrespectful and disruptive classroom behavior
that disregards the teacher and classmates. It can drastically decrease the effectiveness of a course
and create im–mense stress for the instructor. Recent studies have shown that classroom civility is
de–clining, resulting in distractive and disorderly classes. Among the numerous different forms of
incivility, sleeping during class, arriving to class late or leaving early, and bold–ly texting during
class are most prevalent. Over the past few years, faculty have seen an increase in class sleepers,
tardy students, and smartphone addicts. University students have a magnitude of different roles in
their lives that they have to juggle all at once. As the saying goes, when it comes to sleep, studying,
and social life, time only allows for two of the three. Seventy percent of college students get less
than eight hours of sleep at night, causing them to be sleep deprived, according to the Univer–sity of

The Bauhaus And Its Impact On Architecture
The Bauhaus was arguably one of the most influential events in design history. The Bauhaus was a
German art, design, and architecture school that was founded by Modernist architects Walter
Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. Although founded by Modernist architects,
the Bauhaus did not teach architecture during its early years. Instead, Head of the Bauhaus Walter
Gropius, wanted to form a school that encompassed all learnings of art and craft and form a
curriculum that was activity–based and not purely theoretical. Gropius stated in Manifesto and
Program of the Bauhaus, Weimar, 1919, "Let us therefore create a new guild of craftsmen without

During this time, industries transitioned from handmade crafting to machine manufacturing.
Industries began manufacturing cheaper copies of handmade luxury goods which ultimately lead to
a loss of need for the arts and crafts. Many designers, including English craftsman William Morris,
developed an anxiety for the loss of craft. Manufacturing and creativity had branched off into two
separate paths. Many attempts were made to reconnect craft with industry at the beginning of the
20th century. The Deutscher Werkbund in Munich was formed in 1907 to showcase designs for
manufactured objects. After the fall of the German Monarchy post World War I, Germany became
more revolutionised. In 1917 the Dutch movement De Stijl was founded. De Stijl was centred on
constructivist design principles. It was from this idea that Gropius decided to build a school which
could attempt to bridge the gap between industry production and crafts. Gropius opened the first
Bauhaus school in Weimar in 1919. Not only had craft reconnected with industry production, but the
Bauhaus sought to revolutionise design. Gropius believed that art schools should unite all fine arts
and crafts in a single location and have all disciplines collaborate with one another. He also hired
specialists in each discipline of the arts to teach and revolutionise modern design.

The adoption of some or all of the macrobiotic principles is one way that each individual can
counteract the negative trend of health and disease. Before we can begin the journey of disease
prevention, we must ask, "How did we get to this point?" Dietary History in America
The types of food that were eaten during the 1800's were rather simple.
Those who had

Definition Of Binge Drink
The legal definition of binge drink is getting to the point of legally intoxication within 2 hours of
consumption of the first beverage. Normally, this takes around 5 drinks for a man and for drinks for
a woman. A "drink" , in terms of alcohol, is legally defined as equal to 14.0 grams (0.6 ounces) of
pure alcohol. Generally, this amount of pure alcohol is found in 12–ounces of beer (5% alcohol
content). 8–ounces of malt liquor (7% alcohol content). 5–ounces of wine (12% alcohol content).
1.5–ounces or a "shot" of 80–proof (40% alcohol content) distilled spirits or liquor (e.g., gin, rum,
vodka, whiskey). This doesn't necessarily mean the individual is an alcoholic many binge drinkers
only drink heavily, three or four times a month. This by defection, does not make them and are not a
daily dependent. around 92% of binge drinkers are actually adults over the age of 26. Well this only
accounts for 8% of the population of binge drinkers actually being enrolled in college. For students,
binge drinking is thought to make up almost half of students regularly drink either in or off campus.

It is therefore very essential for all to realize that public outcry for increased social responsibility
will not disappear if business organizations fail to respond to the challenges these had posed for the
society. In view of the perceived information gap, it is therefore worthwhile collating and
aggregating in a more organized manner, the contributions of Nigerian corporations [using banking
and communications industries as a focus] to the well–being of the society. This is necessary if only
to show, in a graphic and mathematical ways that the industries seriously identify with the
aspirations of the communities and the general public. In the early years of this century, two
Americans independently and without knowing of each other were among the first businessmen in
the world's history to initiate major community reforms. Andrews Carnegie preached and financed
the free public library. Julius Rosenwald fathered the country farm agent system and adopted the
infant 4–H CLUBS. Carnegie was already retired from business and one of the world's richest men.

China Is Making A $ 250 Billion A Year Investment Essay
In 2014, about 7.26 million new Chinese undergraduates were produced, which is more than 7 times
the number 15 years ago (Sharma, 2014, p.2). Besides, "China is making a $250 billion–a–year
investment in what economists call human capital" ( Brandisher, 2013, p. 1). Specifically, the
Chinese government has spent a huge amount of money and energy in expanding higher education
to improve the current system, and to provide a broadly educated public. However, the alarming rise
in the number of new undergraduates has sparked a hot debate –– will the effort pay off ? Many
researchers argue that these investment has led to undergraduates boom directly, and has resulted in
high unemployment among new undergraduates. For illustration, the unemployment rate among
Chinese new undergraduates six months after leaving university is officially around 15%" (Sharma,
2014, p.2). After witnessed such cruel fact, the whole society even some scholars has started to
blame the government. Admittedly, the government should take some responsibilities for the boom.
However, the number of undergraduates was constantly increasing before these investments, and
education is more than just policies. Education is closely connected to cultures as well, so many
other cultural factors may also impact on people's choices. Hence, it is unfair for the government to
take all the responsibilities for the undergraduates boom, and it is vital to find all the causes and
correct them. Comprehensively, the

Ray Laramie Biography
I decided to do my paper on Ray Larabie who is known for his shareware/freeware fonts and is one
of the biggest contributors to digital typography. He is a Canadian open and true type font designer
born in 1970 currently living in Japan. He tends to specialize in sans serif fonts which are good for
use in desktop publishing and graphic design titles/headlines rather than body text. His fonts have
been used in several high profile projects such as Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne and the Price is
Right. Between the years 1996 and 2001 Ray created 250 free font families which were released on
his web site. Then in 2001 he started the Typodermic Fonts Company and continues to update and
expand the original Larabie Fonts family. His fonts and style is very diverse and different. When
Ray was five and living near Ottawa his grandmother brought him stacks of specialized lettering
sheets of Helvetica, Clarendon, Franklin Gothic, Futura and Univers. He got to know these fonts and
began to recognize them in the environment. He received a computer in the early 80s and he started
making bitmap fonts. Ray believes that at first he didn't have as much of an eye for type designs as
he thought he did. He considered going back to school but realized how much he didn't like school.
What helped him ultimately was someone telling him about his overshoots. He wasn't aware he'd
even been making overshoots but he wasn't uncomfortable with the scrutiny because he never
thought real font designers

The appeal for a clean, professional, and timeless typeface is undeniable. From Fortune 500 logos, to local street signs, Helvetica holds the spot for most widely used font choice to designers and amateur designers alike. What made Helvetica so popular and, why, over 50 years later, does it still retain its popularity? Why does Helvetica work equally effective for both a letter of termination and on the birth announcement of a child? Typography which is the arrangement and interaction of letters on a page is influenced by culture, history, and technology. The foundations of the International Typographic Style can be traced to two art schools, the Zurich School of the Applied Arts and the School of Design in Basel, who taught a curriculum in which form follows function. The 1950s saw a boom of the International style when it was epitomized with the creation of several new san–serif type families. The geometric fonts on the 1920s and 30s was rejected in favor of designs inspired by Akzidenz Grotesk fonts. Two fonts would soon take the world by storm. In 1954 a Swiss designer working in Paris by the name of Adrian Frutiger created a family of 21 san–serif fonts which he named, Univers. At the same time, back in Switzerland Edouard Hoffman of the Haas type foundry in Switzerland felt that the Akzidenz Grtotesk fonts should be refined and upgraded. Hoffman had been waiting for the right moment to release a new typeface and in 1956 he contacted Max Miedinger, who had worked with him at Haas and had since branched out as a freelance consultant and designer to help create the new typeface for Haas. Hamburgers. No, not the food, the word. Miedinger began to create a new typeface by working out the letters in the word, hamburgers, a word that includes all stylistic variations of letters. An Analysis Of Suicide Note By Janice Mirikitani The term Asian American refers to an extremely diverse group of people, with varying cultures, histories, views of mental illness, and views of suicide. In a summary before the poem the author explains that "Her suicide note contained an apology to her parents for having received less than a perfect four–point grade average" (Kirszner 683). This example shows that the main character had to have a great grade in school if not she would not feel content with herself. Education is one of the most important goals in a life of an Asian American citizen and if not accomplished very well could result in Depression or even Suicide. Asymmetricistic Impact On Graphic Design THE IMPACT OF THE INTERNATIONAL TYPOGRAPHIC STYLE ON WEB DESIGN INTRODUCTION The International Typographic Style, or Swiss Style, invokes to the graphic design movement that emerged in Switzerland during the 1950s, after the Second World War, in a particular social, economical and industrial context. Through emphasizing clarity of information, the International Style is characterized by a range of specific visual hallmarks. This movement is especially marked by the creation and use of grids and sans–serif typefaces. Admired for its simple, clean, factual, neutral and highly mathematical structured approach to organizing and presenting information, it became a new revolution in the world of graphic design and especially in web design. Indeed, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It serves as a framework for designers to organize their information and make it clear. Inspired by the Constructivism approach, Swiss designers preferred asymmetrical layouts and used the grid as an organization tool to provide an overall orderly and unified structure. The grid serves as an armature on which designers can organize text and images in a rational, easy to absorb manner. – The use of photography is another important characteristic of this movement. Swiss designers were influenced by the modernist idea in which photography was a better tool to show reality than drawings and illustrations. – Keeping white spaces is essential for Swiss designers because it helps to perceive the different groups of the content. In a format, the right amount of white spaces at the good places can create a first good impression and can motivate visitors to read through the web page. So, white spaces are important for a good design and the Swiss style design lays a lot of emphasis on it. This style promotes the use of big white spaces between texts to differentiate them and to give a boost to the whole design. It also suggests the use of white spaces between images to improve the look of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The use of small hydro, specifically both micro and pico hydro, can power a small village or group of houses with little to no environmental impact. Systems have been successfully implemented in both Brazil and other developing countries. The social and geographic character– istics of this region make it a perfect place to implement policy regarding the integration of small hydro into the rural setting. Most of the money is reinvested in new projects or main– tenance for existing ones. This reinvestment has a direct positive impact on the community members it serves and is a plausible model for future endeavors in providing ac– cessible, cheap hydroelectricity. All of these projects are designed to have low environ– mental impacts and be sustainable and easy to maintain. Since they are mini–hydro projects, large head heights (and thus large dams) are not required [9]. Most of these 6 turbine projects favor weirs over dams which cause much less damage to both the river and the surround– ing wildlife and fish population. An example of one of these small, low impact dams can be seen in FIG. 1. The design of these system also includes many failsafes to help aid in environmental protection. Adrian Frutiger is undeniably one of the most Influential typeface designers of the 20th century even in the world of digital typeface. During the 50 years of his professional management, he has designed over 30 typefaces. He has also worked for IBM and type manufacturing companies such as Linotype and Westiform. His Univers and Frutiger typefaces in the world of visual communication and typography are among the most renowned works of design. Adrian Frutiger was born in 1928 in Interlaken, a town near the Swiss Alps. He learned various handwriting methods in his youth and since then, with his father's recommendation, became interested in print and sculpture to such an extent that years later he stated that recognizing different angles in sculpture has greatly helped him in designing various letterforms. In regards to his interest in type, Adrian Frutiger says, "Everything started from the day when I visited a German typesetter. I saw how he placed letters upside down next to each other with unparalleled skill and that how one can express his knowledge with twenty– six letters. In different Latin languages one can speak about everything, legible to all. That's how I wrote my first sentence by the method Gutenberg had invented whom I had not even heard of in high school". Bilingual Course, Essentials Of The Learning Sciences Essay We had the 13th Class yesterday for the bilingual course "Essentials of the Learning Sciences", and the topic of this week was about "Problem Based Learning (PBL)". We were the discussion group, and it was the last time for our group to play the teacher roles in this bilingual course. Before the class, I made a tremendous effort in preparation for the class; reading the Chapter 15 of the CHLSv2, and searching for some definitions of some vocabularies. As results of the lack knowledge in this chapter I tried to find other primary resources related to the topics, I found more than ten books about PBL and many papers related to the learning theories in PBL context, so I learn a lot from other resources rather from the chapter 15. In addition, we were working collaboratively, we met many times discussed our work, I provided some feedback and they appreciate during the designing process. That is a good itself to learn and interact with others across the cultures; we are applying some knowledge in an actual situation.  What has happened in the class? Miss GAO Qian started our class by going over last week's homework, then she started introducing the first part of the chapter 15 which was about the definition and the two examples of PBL. Second, I introduced a brief history and some theoretical background about PBL. After the break, Miss LI Ang was talked about the design, implementation, assessment, and the effect of PBL. As of late, Americans are gaining awareness about the importance of a diet that is more nutritious than meat and potatoes. This is partly due to highly publicized information on foods that claim to be beneficial to our overall health. Articles and news reports let us know about the most current study on diet and how it relates to athletic ability, mental acuity and general well–being. Another area that has received much attention is how diet is connected to disease prevention. Many medical reports are recommending diets that are low in fat and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before we can begin the journey of disease prevention, we must ask, "How did we get to this point?" Dietary History in America To get an idea about how the cancer rates in America correlate with eating patterns, I will give a little history of dietary habits. Traditionally, food was an integral part of life. Life revolved around food because life revolved around survival. (Cancer, 7) Before the Industrial Revolution, local resources had to be relied upon for sustenance. There were no major highways for transporting food and other goods. This meant that most homesteads were self–sustainable. Farming was done to provide food for the members of the family and the farm animals. Most meals were prepared on a daily basis from scratch because there were very few food storage options. (Cancer, 11) The types of food that were eaten during the 1800 's were rather simple. Vegetables and grains were the basis for each meal because they could easily be grown by each family. Meat and other animal products were rarely eaten because it was too expensive to raise animals for meat. Animals were needed to help with farming tasks. The idea of using farm space to grow food for animals so that the animals could then be eaten was seen as wasteful. This is part of the reason that meat was associated with wealth. Those who had more than enough could afford to use some of their land to raise animals for meat. (Macrobiotic, 25)

Body Surface Are A Comparison Of Different Methods Reflection: Comparison of methods I chose two methods during this investigation to find my surface area; one of them was using the body parts as shapes, which was useful as I was able to rely on already made formulas to find the surface area of my skin. The other method was to use tight clothes that fit my body tightly, that way I could measure the height x width of the cloth. I was able to find my body surface area from these methods quite easily. I would say the easiest one to perform was the 1st method, which was using body parts as shapes, I say this because it was easier to use formulas of different types of shapes, and the results would be closer to my actual body surface area, since I was able to use shapes that looked like my body parts. On the other hand using clothes was not a bad option as it gave a more general surface area, compared to the other method. Altogether, the only downside that both methods have is that there is room to be a bit more accurate. For example, I could have used different shapes that are more related to the specific body part, which could have given in total an accurate body surface area. ... Stoicism In Marcus Aurelius's 'Meditations' An Ideal World (An analysis of the use of stoicism in Marcus Aurelius's, "Meditations") Stoicism is defined in Greek school of Philosophy as teaching that "virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge, and that the wise live in harmony with divine reason that governs nature, and are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain." (Oxford). Virtue is a trait sought after by many in today's society. It is also a trait that millions upon millions of people choose to ignore. Naturally, horrible and crude things might happen to certain people. These things should be expected and even anticipated. Nonetheless, the world goes about in its own way, and men must reciprocate this natural idea. Men are more than capable of knowing the difference between an action that is just and one that is unjust. Individual freedom and control is also given very much emphasis in regards to stoicism in Marcus Aurelius's, "Meditations". This idea is self–explanatory; men have control over themselves and have the power to direct their thoughts and views. "You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." (Meditations). As men are able to control their own thoughts, they can start focusing in on things that truly matter. They can focus on more virtuous things. Philosophers have learned to control their minds and see truths that others in the world are hidden from. If these philosophers can find a way to share this information with as many people as possible, then they will have achieved their ultimate goal. These philosophers are usually the ones to be leaders of a nation. They are chosen to lead because of their understanding of how to help everybody live together in harmony and unity. A High-Voltage Compliant Microelectrode Array Driver for... 2.5 High–voltage switching A fundamental component of this microelectrode driver is a high–voltage switch and it is necessary to characterize the implemented switch for different stimulation current levels. An analog CMOS switch can be an n–type or p–type MOSFET which is operated either in cut–off (OFF state) or ohmic region (ON state). The switch can be characterized by a fixed linear transconductance, gds , which is strongly signal–dependent and expressed according to Eq. 8 [37] where, μn and μp are electron and hole mobility respectively in two types of transistors, Cox is the gate–oxide capacitance, W n and W p are the dimensions of transistors, VDD is the power supply L L voltage, and Vin is the input signal. The bulk of NMOS and PMOS transistors are connected to the highest potential, VDD and the lowest potential, VSS respectively. The limitations are that the maximum voltage an NMOS and the minimum voltage a PMOS can pass are [VDD − Vthn ] and |Vthp | respectively. This drawback can be overcome using CMOS transmission gate (TG) which exhibits lower overall transconductance. Another advantage of using TG based switch is that it passes good '1' (or logic level high) and good '0' (logic level low) without any threshold voltage drop, or in other words, TG gate switch allows rail–to–rail swings. The transconductance of TG gate switch is expressed by the following equation: The on resistance RsON of the switch is the reciprocal of its transconductance, gdsON and given by ... This is particularly interesting when it is considered that these peers were other students of Buddhism such as Gary Snyder or even Philip Whalen, who is an ordained Zen monk. In fact, Kerouac was so immersed in Buddhist thought that in 1956 he completed the manuscript to what would become a 420 page book titled Some Of The Dharma, which was a collection of notes and thoughts on various ideas taken from the Sutras. Included also were numerous poems and prose poems, which were attempts to transliterate the ancient wisdom of Buddhism into a modern context, applicable to the western intellectual and spiritual journeyman. Some of the Dharma was to be a study guide for the beginning practice of Kerouac’s good friend and companion Allen Ginsberg. While Kerouac was writing what was perhaps his best and certainly one of his most spiritually driven novels, Desolation Angels, he was also writing a poem to accompany the novel which was titled Desolation Blues. In contrast to this Kant believes that all we really know are our persc=eptions of the real (Nominal world) and tat we cannot really knowanything aobut the real world. So our reason, though it lets us perceive reality it in fact changes reality, so our reason is not our reality. Kant believes that evertythnging is the nouminal world, and the we are perscieveing theis nouminal wourld though our lens which we call reason (Or concepts). We then use our senses to interpret what we are percieveing. He came to this conclusion when he was trying ot find a synthesis between hume and Descares. Descartes was wrong in his thinking, or at least is is evident that there is something missing from his rationalist thinking. Kant used to believe this but after reading the empirist remarks of Hume he began to see the need for use of our sensory perceptions within reality as well. So the synthesis is that all knowledge comes from the combination of conepts and intuitions (reason and sensory perceptions), without reason we would have no lens to perceive what the nominal wourld is telling us, and without senses we would have no way of understanding what our reason is telling us. But even with this we need to remember that the best that we can do is perceive what is, but that does not determine what something is, the nominal would exists beyond our perception and is still a mystery. This leaves open room for metaphysics, because God, and our souls can still exist beyond our plain of sensory, or reason. 2. both Kierkegaard and Marx disagreed with hegels philiosphy. • 70. A Career In My Life Just how I came to Irvine, California, can only be traced to Divine Providence. Originally, I was a drama major at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. I had been bitten by the acting bug after a successful year of speech and drama at McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio. Although my interests were diverse, I figured that a career in the entertainment field would be a launching pad into the arena I desired most: world–wide in¬fluence. My stay at Wesleyan was riddled with disappointment. Here I was an energetic freshman drama major with loads of talent and optimism, only to find main stage acting was unavailable until our sophomore year. The featured drama my freshman year was Lillian Hellman's, The Little Foxes. I had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Then go to Irvine," she said. Full of adventure, I finished off my sophomore year at Wesleyan, but not before quitting the Drama School and bringing charges of racism against the department. My letter to twenty–four Univer¬sity regents caused quite a stir, but was eventually dismissed and I left in a huff. Getting into the University of California in Irvine took some doing. I fled Wesleyan with a D grade point average. I withdrew from one class and received an F in two other classes, but received an A in my speech class. I gave my speech final on "Why I was leaving Wesleyan." Even though I went fifteen minutes over the speech limit, (and we were warned to never do that in her class,) the teacher gave me the top grade for my inexorable passion. When my application to UCI was rejected that summer on the basis of poor grades, I used my usual rhetoric to get my foot in the door. Then came the million dollar question: "Where are you going to get the money to pay for tuition?" asked the Dean of Admissions. Armed with a barrage of words, I looked him in the eyes and questioned how an educational in–stitution could deny any red–blooded American student an opportunity for higher learning on a technicality like lack of money. I ended with: "Do you want to see a 4.0?" The Dean of Admissions said that the committee would recon¬sider my application, and after I hung up I said, "Mom, pack my bags, I'm on my way to California." • 74. Xenophobia In America Introduction The large number of people crossing international borders has been well publicized in the twenty first century, (Marsella & Ring, 2003; Sloan, 2005). Immigration increases have often been accompanied by negative attitudes toward the migrants (Yakushko, 2009). Immigration has been the subject of many political debates in countries throughout the world (Munro, 2006; Crush & Ramachandran, 2010). Xenophobia in the United States and the European Union has been publicized and recorded, (Smith & Edmonston, 1997;; Pettigrew, 1998, Finzsch & Schirmer, 2002). • 79. The Influential Typeface Helvetica The influential typeface Helvetica, a neo–grotesque1 sans serif type design, came into being in the early 1950s – after the Second World War. The expectation of the designers, Edouard Hoffman and Max Miedinger was to create a neutral typeface that had great clarity, no intrinsic meaning in its form and could be used on a wide variety of signage to remake a new identity apart from the past (). Originally named as Neue Haas Grotesk, the typeface was changed to Helvetica in 1960. Today, Helvetica, as an aesthetics constant, although not perfect, mastered the quantum leap in 1957 from metal type to the digital age of word processing. Axel Langer, a curator of Islamic Near Eastern Art, mentioned it as 'an impersonal typeface for today and tomorrow ().' Analysis: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The original design was released by Linotype in 1957. Since its launch, the typeface had been worked on by a variety of designers to adapt it for successive methods of composition, from hot metal to photocomposition to digital. Given the technical limitations of methods, the character weights, widths and spacing were inconsistent and compromised. Neue Helvetica, as the outcome of technological changes, was designed in 1983, represents a synthesis of aesthetics and technical refinements and modifications that resulted in improved usefulness: a number of characters were subtly changed to be more consistent and more harmonious with the overall design characteristics. For instance, the x–height has been adjusted to appear visually the same in all weights. The x–heights in previous versions were all the same, but since type tends to look shorter as it gets heavier, the new x–heights compensate for this optical illusion. Besides, the crossbars on the lowercase 'f' and 't' were widened to increase the legibility in text. Additionally, the Neue Helvetica family was extended to 51 weights in all, which are many more than in the original ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Harnessing the energy from the sun for hot water and electrical power could provide a renewable, low carbon energy source, and presents an attractive way of mitigating climate change. PV cell photovoltaic is the direct conversion of light into electricity. It uses materials which absorb photons of lights and release electrons charges. 1.1 Photovoltaic systems A Photovoltaic system is an arrangement of components designed to supply usable electric power for a variety of purposes, using the Sun as the power source. Catcher in the Rye Innocence, Compassion, and some ‘Crazy' Cliff A novel, which has gained literary recognition worldwide, scrutiny to the point of censorship and has established a following among adolescents, The Catcher in the Rye is in its entirety a unique connotation of the preservation of innocence and the pursuit of compassion. With certain elegance the writer J.D. Salinger, substantiates the growth and perils, which lie between childhood and adulthood. Secondly, it crystallizes for us Holden's concept of good and evil; childhood is good, the only pure good, but it is surrounded by perils, the cliff of adolescence over which the children will plunge in the evil of adulthood unless stopped. But finally, the image is based on a mis–understanding. The Burns poem goes ‘If a body meet a body' not ‘if a body catch a body,' and the fact that Phoebe is aware of this and Holden is not, plus the manner in which these two words (‘catch' and ‘meet') are re–examined and re–interpreted by Holden at the end of the novel, shows us in a powerful and deeply suggestive way the center of Holden's diffi–culty." Holden's view of life as it is and the way life should be is based on a misunder–standing of man's place in society. Having difficulty coming to grips with this misunder–standing, Holden crosses a threshold. Later he fatefully comes in contact with his sister once again, at the Central Park carrousel in the final scene of the novel. At the sight of his sister he is overcome by a love for all people when he sees how much his sister cares about him. The organizational culture can perhaps be described as a hierarch culture. A hierarchy culture has an internal focus and produces more formalized and structured work environment (Kreitner, p. 70). This process is beneficial for both the existing employees and new leadership. One of the processes that I would have recommended to Johnson at the beginning of his term with J.C. Penny would be the organizational activities, processes or outcomes that leaders pay attention to, measure, and control. The behavior of Johnson and his new management team suggested that they rejected learning about the existing culture at J.C. Penny and how and why things are done the way they were. To meet the objectives of the board of directors, the immediate focus was to focus on what he thought the customer wanted...a method that was proven to be successful at Apple, but failed at J.C. Lastly decision to select surveys were also influenced by past academic researchers (Abdolvand, 2016; Quellet, 2007; Obermiller and Spangenberg, 1989; Curran and Zignago, 2012) which based their research methodology on surveys. 3.3.2.1 Survey Design Most powerful determinant which influenced this survey design was the number of partici–pants which I could target with it. Although founded by Modernist architects, the Bauhaus did not teach architecture during its early years. Instead, Head of the Bauhaus Walter Gropius, wanted to form a school that encompassed all learnings of art and craft and form a curriculum that was activity–based and not purely theoretical. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time, industries transitioned from handmade crafting to machine manufacturing. Industries began manufacturing cheaper copies of handmade luxury goods which ultimately lead to a loss of need for the arts and crafts. Many designers, including English craftsman William Morris, developed an anxiety for the loss of craft. Manufacturing and creativity had branched off into two separate paths. Many attempts were made to reconnect craft with industry at the beginning of the 20th century. The Deutscher Werkbund in Munich was formed in 1907 to showcase designs for manufactured objects. After the fall of the German Monarchy post World War I, Germany became more revolutionised. In 1917 the Dutch movement De Stijl was founded. De Stijl was centred on constructivist design principles. It was from this idea that Gropius decided to build a school which could attempt to bridge the gap between industry production and crafts. Gropius opened the first Bauhaus school in Weimar in 1919. Not only had craft reconnected with industry production, but the Bauhaus sought to revolutionise design. Dietary History in America To get an idea about how the cancer rates in America correlate with eating patterns, I will give a little history of dietary habits. (Cancer, 11) The types of food that were eaten during the 1800's were rather simple. Those who had ... • 143. Definition Of Binge Drink The legal definition of binge drink is getting to the point of legally intoxication within 2 hours of consumption of the first beverage. Normally, this takes around 5 drinks for a man and for drinks for a woman. A "drink" , in terms of alcohol, is legally defined as equal to 14.0 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. Generally, this amount of pure alcohol is found in 12–ounces of beer (5% alcohol content). 8–ounces of malt liquor (7% alcohol content). 5–ounces of wine (12% alcohol content). 1.5–ounces or a "shot" of 80–proof (40% alcohol content) distilled spirits or liquor (e.g., gin, rum, vodka, whiskey). This doesn't necessarily mean the individual is an alcoholic many binge drinkers only drink heavily, three or four times a month. This by defection, does not make them and are not a daily dependent. around 92% of binge drinkers are actually adults over the age of 26. Well this only accounts for 8% of the population of binge drinkers actually being enrolled in college. For students, binge drinking is thought to make up almost half of students regularly drink either in or off campus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is therefore very essential for all to realize that public outcry for increased social responsibility will not disappear if business organizations fail to respond to the challenges these had posed for the society. In view of the perceived information gap, it is therefore worthwhile collating and aggregating in a more organized manner, the contributions of Nigerian corporations [using banking and communications industries as a focus] to the well–being of the society. This is necessary if only to show, in a graphic and mathematical ways that the industries seriously identify with the aspirations of the communities and the general public. In the early years of this century, two Americans independently and without knowing of each other were among the first businessmen in the world's history to initiate major community reforms. Andrews Carnegie preached and financed the free public library. Julius Rosenwald fathered the country farm agent system and adopted the infant 4–H CLUBS. Carnegie was already retired from business and one of the world's richest men. Rosenwald who had recently bought a near bankrupt mail order firm called Sear Roebuck and Company, ... • 151. China Is Making A $ 250 Billion A Year Investment Essay In 2014, about 7.26 million new Chinese undergraduates were produced, which is more than 7 times the number 15 years ago (Sharma, 2014, p.2). Besides, "China is making a $250 billion–a–year investment in what economists call human capital" ( Brandisher, 2013, p. 1). Specifically, the Chinese government has spent a huge amount of money and energy in expanding higher education to improve the current system, and to provide a broadly educated public. However, the alarming rise in the number of new undergraduates has sparked a hot debate –– will the effort pay off ? Many researchers argue that these investment has led to undergraduates boom directly, and has resulted in high unemployment among new undergraduates. For illustration, the unemployment rate among Chinese new undergraduates six months after leaving university is officially around 15%" (Sharma, 2014, p.2). After witnessed such cruel fact, the whole society even some scholars has started to blame the government. Admittedly, the government should take some responsibilities for the boom. However, the number of undergraduates was constantly increasing before these investments, and education is more than just policies. Education is closely connected to cultures as well, so many other cultural factors may also impact on people's choices. Hence, it is unfair for the government to take all the responsibilities for the undergraduates boom, and it is vital to find all the causes and correct them. Comprehensively, the ... • 155. Ray Laramie Biography I decided to do my paper on Ray Larabie who is known for his shareware/freeware fonts and is one of the biggest contributors to digital typography. He is a Canadian open and true type font designer born in 1970 currently living in Japan. He tends to specialize in sans serif fonts which are good for use in desktop publishing and graphic design titles/headlines rather than body text. His fonts have been used in several high profile projects such as Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne and the Price is Right. Between the years 1996 and 2001 Ray created 250 free font families which were released on his web site. Then in 2001 he started the Typodermic Fonts Company and continues to update and expand the original Larabie Fonts family. His fonts and style is very diverse and different. When Ray was five and living near Ottawa his grandmother brought him stacks of specialized lettering sheets of Helvetica, Clarendon, Franklin Gothic, Futura and Univers. He got to know these fonts and began to recognize them in the environment. He received a computer in the early 80s and he started making bitmap fonts. Ray believes that at first he didn't have as much of an eye for type designs as he thought he did. He considered going back to school but realized how much he didn't like school. What helped him ultimately was someone telling him about his overshoots. He wasn't aware he'd even been making overshoots but he wasn't uncomfortable with the scrutiny because he never thought real font designers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
