This document discusses customizing electronic medical record (EMR) systems through advanced rule authoring. It introduces the Rule Authoring and Validation Environment (RAVE), a tool developed by Regenstrief Institute to empower stakeholders to customize EMR systems. RAVE allows users to mix and match "channels" like patients, alerts, orders, and observations to create rules without needing a programmer. Rules can be used for clinical decision support, alerts, or other functions. The RAVE generates standard rule syntax that can then be implemented in EMR systems.

requiring code-like syntax
