The Pony Express
In 1860, a mail carrying service called Central Overland California and Pike 's Peak Express
Company, more notoriously known as The Pony Express, was established by three business
partners. It was a relay race on horses from station to station, carrying mail bags as they went. Being
a dangerous job, it required the bravest and most experienced young riders they could find. The
founding of The Pony Express was a useful resource in delivering mail regardless of the struggles
the riders faced, such as Indians, weather conditions, and uncomfortable and dangerous terrain.

To be honest, no one is exactly sure who actually came up with the idea to bring The Pony Express
to America. There are varied opinions as to who it was, but none can be properly confirmed. "Some
attribute the idea for the Pony Express to B.F. Ficklin, the general superintendent of the huge
Russell, Majors, and Waddell freight and stage company, who is said to have shared his notion of a
relay of horse riders carrying the mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, with
California Sen. William M. Gwin while the two traveled on horseback from San Francisco to
Washington, D.C., in 1854. In January 1855 Gwin introduced a bill to finance a system of weekly
service across the frontier along a central route, but this bill too failed. Others credit William H.
Russell (of Russell, Majors and Waddell), who is said to have discussed the concept of a horse–relay
system with John B. Floyd, the U.S. secretary of war, in early 1858. Still other possible originators
include John Scudder, a Russell, Majors and Waddell employee, who claimed that he and coworkers
in Salt Lake City conceived of the idea in December 1859, and Frederick A. Bee, a partner in a
telegraph company, who reportedly approached a number of owners of San Francisco newspapers

3. Buyer Power
In the US Express Mail industry, the buyers fit into two segments: businesses and individuals.
Express Mail has become the industry standard in some industries such as banking, consulting and
financial services since the items inside the package had a high ratio of value to weight. Businesses
needed to be able to track the packages and be assured that it arrives on time. That being said,
businesses were often high–volume buyers since the shipping managers identified which firm to
deal with and concentrate the high–volume of shipments to that firm for a particular project or for
the time being. Sales representatives from the firms had to negotiate with stingy shipping managers
who sometimes demanded the upwards of 50% or more discounts. The existence of many large
volume buyers meant that the buyer power is high. Similarly, individuals also held high buyer power
since the Big Three and other second–tier postal services offered largely undifferentiated services.
On the other hand, the heavy discounts granted for businesses means that the express service saves
the buyer the money. And the quality of service is important to the buyers since the mail contains
valuable information or items. These two factors result in low buyer power.

Threat of new entry is low because the barriers to entry are high. Newcomers to the industry would
require an enormous amount of up front capital to set up the distribution networks and
infrastructure, such as establishing hubs, and acquiring aircraft and a large amount of ground

The airports and the aircraft suppliers aren't only relying on the express mail industry, so that also
gives those suppliers more power to charge what they want (landing fees, cost of planes). Ground
transportation vehicles is the only input that would allow for more bargaining power since there are
numerous alternatives available, there is more room for the industry players to negotiate price.
The availability of substitutes is medium mainly because there aren't a large number of substitutes
out there for express mail outside of the industry. Most next day deliveries are business documents,
parcels, letters, ect, not typically cargo. So substitutes could include email and faxes, both are faster
and cheaper than express mailing. Depending on the nature of the business, video conferencing or
the old fashion telephone could be used. If the parcel is going somewhere local maybe could use
bike messengers, or just hand deliver. There are also the second tier players, like RPS, DHL and
TNT, while they are still in the delivery industry; they tend to specialize in areas other than express
mail. With RPS, it is second day service at 40–50% less, and a business that does a large amount of
overseas or international express shipments may want to substitute with DHL or TNT, who
specialize and differentiate themselves in the international market.

Labor Disputes with Pilots: The FedEx Pilots Association is formed by the FedEx pilots. The motive
of this global body was to bring about changes in the pilots' salaries, retirement benefits and also
restricting outsourcing of foreign flights. The pilots can share their views and feelings through a
website. There was a case in 1998 where the pilots were about to go on a strike which enabled
FedEx and FedEx Pilots Association to develop an agreement that was posted on the website.
However, this agreement did not satisfy the expectations of the pilots and thus, this is an internal
