The quality of teachers cannot exceed the quality of their teacher education programs and their teacher educators! We should start from teacher education when we want to improve teacher and teaching quality. In the International Conference on Language and Language Teaching 2018, I propose the idea of interdisciplinary teacher education initiated by Second/Foreign Language Teacher Education. With its strong emphasis on English language mastery and the recent development in multiliteracies and Content and Language Integrated Learning, L2/EFL Teacher Education can be the pioneers for interdisciplinary teacher education especially in developing nations. Teachers in this program can have the qualifications to teach not only English, but also other subjects such as science, social studies, math, arts, or technology, etc. Teachers educated in an interdisciplinary way will much more likely to have the capacity to think and teach in an interdisciplinary way too. It is what we need for the 21st century society. Education and educators must rise with the occasion!

Gradually and Carefully
ā¢ Building a strong teacher education system
ā¢ The strong teacher education system produces teachers āØ
with solid knowledge, skills and dispositions to be lifelong learners.
ā¢ The practices of the phenomenon-based approach in Finnish schools did not start
in 2016, but in mid 1990s when Finnish comprehensive schools started to prepare
their own school-speciļ¬c curricula and some schools chose to implement an
integrated teaching and learning approach.
ā¢ Thus, by 2016, 20 years later, when Finland decided to implement the
phenomenon-based approach as the national curriculum, most teachers are

ā¢ An interdisciplinary teacher education that has a
language teacher component could be regarded as an
expansion of Content and Language Integrated
Learning (CLIL) or Content Based Instruction (CBI)
approach in language learning.
ā¢ CLIL is deļ¬ned as āeducational methods in which
āsubjects are taught through a foreign language with
dual-focused aims, namely the learning of content, and
the simultaneous learning of a foreign

Interdisciplinary Teacher Education
ā¢ A special certiļ¬cate on interdisciplinary teaching focusing āØ
on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with āØ
four subject specialist qualiļ¬cations: natural science education, āØ
social studies, education for sustainable development, āØ
and bilingual instruction.
ā¢ Student teachers learn content knowledge and āØ
pedagogical content knowledge in two disciplines in natural science āØ
and/or social science, in bilingual instruction, in ESD and complete integrated practical modules.
ā¢ Part of the program outcomes are:
ā teachers are able to transfer (inter-)disciplinary content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge to
design learning environment for ESD,
ā develop, test teaching concepts regarding climate change, biodiversity, resource conservation, etc.
ā cooperate with schools and outdoor education institutions,
ā motivate for SD-related lifestyle, and
ā motivate to participate in the society.
