There are 4 basic conventions
on Twitter:

1) Direct messages: private
messages between users on
Twitter.




2) Public reply: public
messages addressed to
another user.

3) Retweet: a tweet reposted
by another user.




4) Hashtag (#): a tweet with a
hashtag describing the topic.

1) Contextualise
A random sample of more
than 200K retweets found
that 18% of retweets contain
a hashtag.* Contextualising
tweets with hashtags helps
others understand the tweet
much more quicky and decide
if they want to share it with
others.

a URL*. Users on twitter are
looking for value. Links to
pictures, jokes, stories etc.
Find content that is valuable
for your audience.

3) Be Relevant
This is where the temporal
nature of Twitter really
comes into play. Tweets that
are topical and pointing to
content that has not been seen
before stands a much better
chance of being retweeted. In
fact tweets which point to old
content will trigger a negative
reaction.

4) Be concise
A tweet which is too long
to be retweeted will create
a barrier. The majority of
Twitter users will want to
add opinion to a retweet, or
just simply retweet without
having to edit the original
tweet. Leave room for others
to contribute to the tweet.

                                                                                   attempted.

A tweet which refers to
another user is more likely to
be retweeted by that user.

Tweets that are topical and pointing to content that has not been seen before stands a much better chance of being retweeted. The majority of Twitter users will want to add opinion to a retweet, or just simply retweet without having to edit the original tweet. Leave room for others to contribute to the tweet.
