Small, off-grid energy sources in rural and
other unconnected areas are not
particularly new, but people are beginning
to take advantage of the green economy by
turning their lack of government-provided
energy into an entrepreneurial opportunity.
Local communities can generate new sources
of vitality, resilience, and independence by
leveraging lightweight clean energy and water
solutions and fostering individual enterprise
based on these goals.

When taken on their own, many of the individual ideas from the game
represent a tiny potential fix to a systemic issue: access to energy and
water. But when gathered together they paint a powerful picture of a future in
which each community or household can draw from a plethora of solutions in order
to maintain its own energy needs and build up local economies. Some player ideas
pushed the limits of this innovation to provide income sources for nomadic
homeless communities or revenue for schools.

Solar Sisters combines the
breakthrough potential of solar
technology with a deliberately
woman-centered direct sales
network to bring both light and
income to even the most remote
communities in rural Africa.
Homeless Wireless Hotspots
Mirroring the potential of peer-to-
peer energy sales, during the 2012
SXSW festival, a marketing firm
teamed up with a homeless shelter
to transform homeless individuals
into 4G wireless hotspots. The
project has also created much
controversy.
