ifm, as a leader
in sensors and
control systems,
now uses the GMR

have significant
advantages over

technology.
Technology
comparison. The electronic sensors are more
reliable than a Reed switch.
Reed switch contacts can get stuck,
break or bounce.
Excellent reliability. Mechanical
wear of Reed switches can lead to
a switch point drift.
Fast response time. Reed switches
with slower response times have a
lower accuracy.
Can operate reliably even with weak
magnetic fields. Better than Hall
effect and Reed.
Extremely stable over the whole
temperature range.
Insensitive to long-term effects of
magnetic fields. Contacts on Reed
switches can become permanently
magnetised over time.

3. The magnetic sensors from ifm electronic.
Now with GMR and AMR technology.
Today a high level of automation
in production systems cannot be
provided without using cylinders,
grippers and slides.
During the production process it
is important to identify position
feedback on these devices.
Normally, position feedback is
achieved using Hall effect and
Reed switch technology. Hall
switches, however, are polarity
sensitive and Reed switches can
be unreliable due to mechanical
wear and slower response times.
ifm’s new series of magnetic
sensors integrates GMR and AMR
technology: These sensors pro-
vide enhanced performance in in-
dustrial automation applications.
IP 69 K, ingress resistant to high-pressure
cleaning.
High-grade stainless steel sensors and
protection rating IP 69 K – the highest
protection rating for wet environments.
Hazardous areas.
ATEX approval group II, 3D.
2-wire technology.
Direct replacement of Reed switches by
the ifm 2-wire magnetic sensors. 2- and 3-
wire versions with LED display and flexible
mounting options.
Polarity independent.
ifm’s magnetic sensors: reliable position
sensing irrespective of magnet orienta-
tion, Hall and Reed switches, in turn, are
polarity sensitive.
A GMR element is
made up of ex-
tremely thin mag-
netic layers, each
separated by a
non-magnetic
layer. Without an
external field they
orient in an anti-
parallel manner.
If these layers are
exposed to a mag-
netic field, the
magnetic layers
orient in a parallel
manner, which
results in a large
change in
resistance.
This change is
converted into a
switching signal
by the internal
electronics.
Excellent reliability
by GMR...
An AMR element
consists of thin
ferromagnetic lay-
ers. Electrical resis-
tance is highest
without external
magnetic fields.
The effect of a
magnetic field
reduces resistance.
This change is con-
verted into a
switching signal by
the internal elec-
tronics. Advan-
tage: This method
enables exact
measurement of
even very small
changes of the
magnetic field
where space is
extremely limited.
This results in a
smaller hysteresis
and a short travel
distance.
... and AMR technology.
4. The sensor is simply inserted
into the T-slot from the top
and kept in place by its self-
locking mechanism. Fixing is
completed by tightening the
screw.
Mount from
the top.
Conventional sensors:
Cable and mounting screw are
placed at opposite ends of the
housing. If the cable is pulled,
the sensor can be damaged.
Standard mounting.
T-slot cylinder sensors
For industrial applications
and hygienic and wet areas
For pneumatic cylinders
and linear slides.
ifm’s cylinder sensors are an
excellent choice for low-profile,
flush installation in T-slot cylin-
ders. Using the adapter kits the
T-slot cylinder sensor can be
mounted on other cylinder types,
e.g. clean-line, tie-rod, integra-
ted profile and trapezoidal slot
cylinders.
Powerful performance using
GMR technology: high switching
accuracy and high switching fre-
quency – for high travel speeds.
Easy to mount –
only one hand required.

8. Accessories for T-slot cylinder sensors
For industrial applications
and hygienic and wet areas
Suitable for all common
cylinder types.
Specially developed adapters
make the T-slot cylinder sensor
suitable for all common cylinder
types. The same sensor type is
easy and quick to mount to
clean-line, tie-rod, T-slot, inte-
grated profile or trapezoidal slot
cylinders with only one screw.
Replacement without problem:
The adapters are designed so
that the switch position is main-
tained when the sensors are
replaced. This memory function
eliminates the need for new
adjustments.
Even when adapters are used
the sensors keep their advan-
tages: insertable from the
top, self-locking and offering
strain relief using the screw
at the housing end.
Installation with
only one screw.
Easy to mount
accessories.
9. Low height:
Due to the special
design of the
accessories the
optimum utilisa-
tion of space is
ensured. This
results in a low
height – installa-
tion and set-up of
the sensor are
considerably
facilitated

Solutions even for
special cylinders.
With a wide selection of adapters
ifm also offers solutions for non-
typical slot shapes. So the T-slot
sensor can also be used for these
cylinders.
This reduces storage to just a few
sensor types.
User-friendly:
Quick installation of the adapters
with only one screw.

C-slot cylinder sensors
For industrial
applications
For small short-stroke cylin-
ders and parallel grippers.
Two variants for reliable
position feedback.
To position and sort very small
parts in automated production
processes even smaller and more
precise parallel grippers and
short-stroke cylinders are
demanded. In most cases C-slot
designs are used.
The two variants of the C-slot
cylinder sensor from ifm with
GMR technology guarantee fault-
free position feedback even in
difficult applications. The flush
version completely disappears in
the slot and is therefore more or
less protected against mechanical
damage. The short C-slot sensor
with a length of 17.5 mm is spe-
cially suited for very small cylin-
ders or grippers.
13. Length only 17.5 mm: the
short C-slot cylinder sensors.
Because of their wear-free
operation they often have
a longer life than Reed
switches.

Magnetic sensors

Position and
speed sensing.
ifm’s magnetic sensors are ideal for
fast processes due to their high switch-
ing frequency – used here for pulse
evaluation by sensing a magnet on a
rotating shaft.
Pulse evaluation.
Application in the food industry: A bar
magnet integrated into a silicone pig is
detected through the stainless steel
pipe.
Pigging systems.
Magnetic sensors detect the U-tube
position on a flow plate by sensing the
magnet through stainless steel.
Flow plate.
Magnetic sensors from ifm
electronic are used for non-con-
tact sensing of positions, e.g.
toothed wheels and pigs. The
sensors can detect magnets
through materials like stainless
steel, non-ferrous metal, alumin-
ium, plastic and glass.
Due to the GMR technology the
magnetic sensors feature very
long sensing ranges and high
switching frequencies.
The sensors can be supplied in
cylindrical and rectangular hous-
ings with cable or connector and
are therefore flexible in any
application.
15. Long sensing range
up to 70 mm.
Reliable position sensing
irrespective of magnet orientation.
Versions with stainless steel housing and

hygienic and wet environments.
