Editor's Notes
Innovating better life for citizens and patients is about providing even and equal access to healthcare services and to healthcare information. It is about patient empowerment, because informed and empowered patients makes healthcare more efficient and provide higher quality of life for patients. It is about prevention and wellness to make our population healthy and avoid lifestyle related diseases. It is about saving lives when accidents happen through a state of the art pre- hospital and emergency services. It is about convenient and safe patient diagnostics which leads to the right treatment.AND It is about healthcare transformation to make future healthcare meet demands in an economically sustainable way.- Other factors are equally important, but I have chosen to focus on these in my presentation
One of the aspects of increasing productivity is a clear focus on moving healthcare services closer to the patient. Therefore there is a consistent effort to shift from inpatient treatment to outpatient treatment where ever possible. This has e.g. lead to the introduction of new invasive operation technologies and transforming our healthcare system, municipalities are now responsible for rehabilitation, in order to reduce inpatient stay at hospitals.During recent years, Danish hospitals have also been demanded to increase productivity by typically 2% (sometimes more), every year.
In the next ten years Denmark will invest more than 7,5 billion $ in 16 new hospital projects. The projects will modernize around one-third of the current Danish hospital capacity The 16 projects, which are mainly public-private partnerships, are cooperating closely around new innovations, danish design and green technology to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

Denmark is one of the pioneers in diabetes research, which goes 80 years back in time. Diabetes - and the Steno Diabetes center, which is a cooperation between Novo Nordisk and danish authorities - is also a good example of how danishpharma companies and public authorities work together in public-private partnerships to discover and test new medicine. With COPD, diabetes is also one of the focal areas for supporting chronic patients in Denmark with telehealth solutions. Today, a nationwide telehealth solution to cope with ulcer among diabetes patients has been implemented and in the coming years, Denmark will continue the focus on telehealth support for chronic patients.Telehealth and ambient assisted living technology is also used in Denmark to support elderly people in their own homes. E.g. advanced ceiling lifts and high-tech wheelchairs are being used in elderly homes to improve mobility, which is highly appreciated by the elderly. At the same time this technology means huge cost savings (studies indicate 75% home nurse time savings after the first year) because one home nurse can handle tasks which previously required 2 home nurses. This is not only about technology, it is also very important to get the right balance between the elderly persons use of technology and personal contacts with e.g. nurses and relatives..Studies from different Danish telehealth projects indicate healthcare savings up to 30% through patient empowerment, because empowered chronic patients clearly tend to reduce their use of hospital services. And at the same time, their involvement in their own disease increase their insight and quality of live.
