Analysis Of Dwelling In Possibilities By Mark Edmundson
Mark Edmundsons' "Dwelling In Possibilities" is propounding his thoughts on the next generation,
chiefly on students that are attending his classes, millennials. After observing a few of his classes
Edmundson has interpreted that the new technology of the time has made student better equipped
and even eager to learn, however after seeing student on YouTube and Email accounts Edmundson
begins to question If his initial thoughts were true, he then begins on his complex trail of thought,
taking the reader with him. To begin his essay Edmundson takes a comparison to his summer life to
that of a college students, and contrasts the two. Amazed with difference he then starts about how
people today seems to be multitasking by being multiple places ... Show more content on

This isn't really a main point but it is supporting the issue and is implied through most of the
beginning and in a few other parts of Edmundsons' essay. The second idea that leaches from the first
would be how millennials were the first to have been cultivated from a young age to utilize and
master such machinery. This is discreetly said in his essay as "Internet technology was on hand for
my current students from about the time they were eight years old" and "Internet seems to me to
have shaped their generation as much as the multichannel TV, with that critical device, the remote
control, shaped the students who registered for my classes a decade ago. What is the Internet to
current students?". Lastly and the underlying idea of Edmundsons' paper would be, that the reliance
millennials have on technology, a problem that no other generation has faced, could be their road to
ruin. This is affirmed multiple times in the essay restated with different words, an example of this
would be the title "Our Students' Spectacular Hunger for Life Makes Them Radically Vulnerable"
and a sentence that is stated in the beginning of the essay "These students may go on to do great and
good things, but they also present dangers to themselves and to the common future". With what was

Reflective Essay On Loss Of Life
Just the mere thought of dying makes me feel petrified. In just a snap of a finger it can alter
someone's life. No one really ought to think about their own death. Thinking about it felt like it
would happen sooner. To come to the point, I am not yet ready. Hence, I was still enjoying this
stunning life I was facing. I am still dreaming and desiring. I am not yet pleased of what I
accomplished.
According to S. Luper (2014), death is said to be the end of life. He said that being conscious
doesn't literally meant being alive. Dead means a loss of capacity. Advocate of the loss of life claims
that if it exists, it is alive, but if not, then it is not alive. Believing in afterlife will be the only thing
which will make us feel that this event in our life will be our transition to the next big step we are
going to face. So we need to keep our feet on the ground, continue our faith and discover the whole
new world waiting for us.
I am fully aware that death will come. Maybe today, tomorrow, or the next day. No one really
knows. Before this loss of life I will undergo, I look forward to leaving my loved ones in a peaceful
condition. As a matter of fact, I believe that acceptance would be my best preparation for my
morality. Since no one knows when this so called judgment day will ... Show more content on

As I always tell myself, every end will give me a new beginning and this time it was my life with
God. A new dimension that will surely amaze me. The afterlife that I believe will let me experience
the extreme happiness that won't be experienced here on earth. Stated in John 11:23–26, "Jesus said
to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the
resurrection on the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes
in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

Marc Antoine Laugier: An Essay On Architecture
ARCHHTC 236 – Assignment 1 (Annotation #1 –'An Essay On Architecture'– Marc Antoine
Laugier) Marc Antoine Laugiers : An Essay on Architecture (translated and republished in 1977) is
an important text that opens with the authors belief that architectural design has and should come
only from the necessary requirements of man and not from the need of mere ornamentation, as
expressed through his story of mans primitive hut where branches may become a roof, or trunks
columns and so on. Early on in his essay, Laugier states that Beauty is the "combination of
simplicity and nobility " –specifying one of his driving beliefs throughout the text that a simple
building that meets only the mere requirements of our needs is what is 'beautiful' and perhaps ...

The author then goes on to discuss the idea of the Fourfold, being the connection between the Earth,
Sky, Mortals and divinities which as Heidegger says 'pervades to the dwelling', suggesting that the
'dwelling' is linked to the mortal and helps 'escort' it while still maintaining a relation to the other
three . The excerpt concludes with Heidegger proposing that the problem with the dwelling is not
simply a lack of homes but that people or 'mortals' are looking to understand the dwelling rather
than simply learning to experience it –"Mortals ever search anew for the nature of dwelling, that
they must ever learn to dwell. " – suggesting the purpose of the text as an emphasis on what the
dwelling is, an idea separate from the building but also as Beistegui points out Heidegger sees it as
'the very essence of

Building Dwelling And Thinking Analysis
In our daily life we have different meanings of building, dwelling and thinking. We built buildings to
dwell, but we do not dwell because of buildings. As humans, we like to dwell in some place. When
we went to the Fort Greene Park, we saw the fourfold that Martin Heidegger talks about in his
article "Building, Dwelling, thinking". These fourfold are earth, sky, morals, and divinities. First, we
saw unity at this park between the green land, trees and buildings. This park includes part of high
ground and a white building at the center of the park where the soldiers buried. Also, we saw birds
fly from one tree to another. They took the park's trees dwelling for them. We could see the sky from
everywhere at the park. It is horizontal and it gives us the feeling of freedom. Also, we saw people
from different ages. We saw children was playing and enjoying with their time, young people do
exercises and some older people talk to each other. I found that this park is a dwell for many people
such as who do exercises, spend good time at playing and those people come again to this park to
remember good situations and times that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

do, but at the same time they know that their lives have an end. No one can know when his life will
end, but everyone still thinking about the future. When we were walking, I thought about how the
human is limited. The nature around us approve that there is a great power that made all of these
beautiful things like trees and flowers. Also, people appreciate their land so they spent their on

Types Of Dwellings Used By Ancient Romans
Introduction Up to that time, the western world had never seen an empire as extensive and
encompassing as the Roman Empire (Mark, 2011). Even after her fall tales of her exploits continue
to be told and retold. However, the Roman Empire was not merely comprised of emperors, generals
and poets. Like all civilizations that came before it and that have come since, the domain of Rome
comprised of many different people from varying social classes who lived in homes just like people
today. For this unit's discussion, I will discuss the layout and function of the various types of
dwellings used by the ancient Romans and provide my thoughts regarding how those comparisons
compare to the dwellings of today. Discussion The type of dwelling occupied by an ancient Roman
was contingent on their place on the social ladder and their vocation (Kirby, 2001b). Furthermore,
whereas a farmer would prefer to live out in the country, a merchant, in all likelihood, would prefer
to live in the city (Kirby, 2001b). Not unlike today, a substantial portion of the urban population
lived in apartments (Kirby, 2001a). Most rentals were located in large complexes called Insula, some
of which were as tall as seventy feet (seven stories) (Kirby, 2001a). These apartments would have
been crowded usually composed of a single room that doubled as sleeping and living area (Moulton,
1998b). Tenets would have shared a common culinary and sanitary area while plumbing would not
have reached those residing on

The And Design Practices By Martin Heidegger
When is Architecture Architecture?
"Only if we are capable of dwelling, only then can we build." This claim was made by German
philosopher Martin Heidegger in his lecture 'Building Dwelling Thinking'. In the lecture Heidegger
goes beyond architectural and design practices by referring 'building' not only in architectural
construction, but to the whole range of human productive activity. When thinking about 'dwelling' it
is usually connected to buildings. The goal of a building is to allow one to dwell, but not all
buildings are in the domain of dwelling. Christian Nordberg–Schulz describes 'place' as that which
in we dwell, within which we are at home. The truck driver is at home on the highway, but he does
not have his accommodations there; the working woman is at home in her office, but does not have
her dwelling place there. Dwelling is not only limited to the dwelling place. Schulz stated that
dwelling as being in a harmonious relationship with one's surrounding environment. He believes
that dwelling is based in the idea that our dwelling in place grants us an identity and a meaning that
we would otherwise lack. Thus, in order to dwell in a place one must personally connect with that
place which leads us to exclude others from that place as a means to affirm that identity. Many
critics claim that if place is an essentially relative concept based on a personal sense of belonging
then dwelling must be too.
In terms of these theories on dwelling; architecture and

Summary Of The Ojibway Creation Story
The Ojibway creation story portrays the ecological purpose of "apprehending your dwelling place."
The Original Man was able to apprehend his dwelling place by living in harmony with the rest of
creation on Earth. Later on, the tribes that originated from the Original Man began to fight one
another over land and disrespected the living things of Earth. Since the people were no longer
apprehending their dwelling place, Kitchi–Manitou sent a flood to purify the Earth. New land was
created when Nanaboozhoo worked with the animals to retrieve earth from deep beneath the flood
waters. The cooperation of humans and animals is a critical part of apprehension and allowed for a
new dwelling place to be created.

that could stretch even further than most would think. It makes me think of Fan Kauns Travelers By
Streams and Mountains. The compositions are different, but the idea of using a sort atmosphere
feeling that you get from a lot of Chinese ink painting. As author Hung Sheng explains Haung
Dongwang used many ink and brush techniques. Two of the main techniques shown are hemp fiber
textural strokes and alum head textural strokes. Hemp fiber strokes were mostly used to describe
boulders, while alum head strokes were mostly used small angular rocks on top of hills.
These painting techniques show the influences of master ink paintings done by Dong Yaung and
Jaurn. Huang's Dwelling in Fuchin Mountains shows not only that, but beautiful composition that
enhances the brush strokes. Daiost painting like this show off the purity of the landscape almost like
its untouched and seems like we're looking at a remote part of the world that no one else has ever

Reflection Paper
Dwelling, Heidegger also insists, has a certain emotional state of being attached to it. People tend to
interpret the experience of dwelling with the sense of home. Dwelling imbues the experiencer with a
sense of peace and satisfaction. It is a safe space where they are free to be themselves and a place
that need not be either specific nor stationary. In fact, the famous saying "home is where the heart
is" perfectly illustrates that home is a feeling without the need for a dwelling to contain it. For
example, a truck driver may feel at home on the road, but his home is not a formal dwelling. Thus,
the feeling of home can be present without the existence of a dwelling. However, according to
Heidegger, building and dwelling go hand in hand. Heidegger also considers "thinking" an
important part of the process such as thinking about the relationships between building and
dwelling, or the nature of the connections that humans should have with the buildings they dwell
within. On this note, it would be wise to consider another meaning of the term bauen when relating
building to dwelling: dwelling is the manner in which mortals are on the Earth p 2. This definition is
important to the relationship between building and thinking because it spurs one to contemplate this
particular meaning. If building is dwelling then the building could be the orifice for mortality and
divinity alike. As we moved births and deaths from the home to the hospital we lost touch with these

Pros And Cons Of Spirit Family Support Shelter
DISCUSSION A. Does Spirit Family Support Shelter constitute as a dwelling under the Fair
Housing Act (FHA)? The first issue is whether Spirit Family Support Shelter qualifies as a dwelling
under the Fair Housing Act. Under the FHA, a dwelling is any building, structure, or portion thereof,
for purposes of occupancy, as a residence by one or more families, and any vacant land offered for
sale or lease for the construction, or location of any such building, structure, or portion thereof. Fair
Housing Act of 1968, § 807(a), 42 U.S.C.A. § 3602(b). In practice, several Third Circuit Courts
have demarcated "residence" to mean a temporary or permanent dwelling place, abode, or habitation
that one intends to return to, as opposed to a place temporary sojourn or transient visit. Defiore v.
City Rescue Mission of New Castle, 995 F.Supp.2d 413, 418 (W.D.Pa 2013) (quoting Webster's
Third International Dictionary 1931). Subsequently, there must be proof that the shelter is intended
for occupants planning to stay in the shelter for a significant period of time, and that the occupants
viewed the shelter as a place to return to during that period. U.S. v. Columbus Country Club, 915

Analysis Of Heidegger's Building Dwelling Thinking
After the destruction in Germany due to the World War 2, the struggle for survival and inhabitation
had been the most and immediate business for the people. The war caused the destruction of near
one–fifth of the German houses between 1939 and 1945. In West Germany, there were required
almost two and a half million houses for the refugees and another million for younger families. It
was where the German philosopher Martin Heidegger's Freiburg and Black forest were located.
People shared accommodation there till they could find their own. Then arose the question of termed
as "Wohnungsfrage" that means "Dwelling Question" due to this housing crisis. In its response
Heidegger wrote his famous "Building Dwelling Thinking".

In his essay, Heidegger discusses the type of dwelling which is poetic in a sense. He then questions
further that are the dwellings poetic in a true sense if yes then are other dwellings incompatible with
the poetic ones? He further questions about the coexistence of the man's social and historical life.
For Heidegger, poetry is the things that let the man dwell and dwelling is through building. He
believes that art of building is very much similar to the art of poetry. The way the verses in a poem
depict a simple fact in a really creative way is same as that of the technique of constructing a
building and then making the building alive by dwelling in that particular building. This philosophy
of Heidegger is reflected in his architectural design sense that he connects the building styles with
human life. This poem tends to remove the misconceptions that poems snatch away the realities of
this world or poetry is mere fantasy but it's not like that. Actually, poetry brings fantasy to life. Same
as the opposing above and below and belonging to each other; the writer sees different contrasting
things as

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Davidson 's Article,...
In Mark Davidson's article, 'Displacement, Space and Dwelling: Placing Gentrification Debate', he
cites several contemporary case studies where certain deteriorated areas have been targeted for
redevelopment and subsequent evictions have taken place. Using several philosophical authors, such
as Heidegger and Lefebvre, Davidson's focuses on the effect spatial metaphors have on
displacement, and how these concepts tie into the conceptualization of space. In this paper I will
compile a thorough summary of the article and formulate a comprehensive analysis of Davidson's
arguments as well as his sources. Davidson begins his article with arguably one of the most notable
and recent subjects of gentrification, 1520 Sedgwick, the birthplace of Hip–Hop. This dilapidated
apartment building's owners "announced they planned to leave New York State's Mitchell–Lama
programe" (pg. 2), which would result in the current residents evictions. Essentially the program
offered tax incentives to building owners who limit equity to maintain low cost units. However, in
lieu of tax incentives many building owners have elected to leave the program in order to make
more profit via higher costing units, which current residents cannot afford. In the case of 1520
Sedgwick current and former residents, such as the credited father of Hip–Hop Kool Herc, have
veiled their mission to prevent the gentrification process from consuming their building by
petitioning for a historic listing as well as offering to

The Allegory Of The Cave
Plato's iconic "Parable of the Cave" explores the give and take of knowledge and freedom. The story
touches on enlightenment, the overwhelming fear of the unknown, and if it is even possible to gain
the knowledge that brings liberation. Throughout the story, the reader is essentially faced with the
question of if knowledge is power, or ignorance is bliss. Plato's "Parable of the Cave" begins by
setting the scene of men dwelling in a cave since birth. These men have their necks and legs
restrained, keeping their attention facing forward at all times. Throughout their lives, the cave
dwellers watch puppet–like shows on these walls of the cave. The puppet shows are created by a fire
burning towards the upper back part of the cave, and the figures casting the shadows are controlled
by the "carriers" (Levenson & Westphal, 37). After watching the puppet shows their whole lives, the
cave dwellers have come to know this as their reality. Although the puppet shows are only shadows
of objects, the men find the shadows to be a tangible presence in the cave, unaware of what they are
actually witnessing. After years of watching the shadows on the cave walls, one man is released
from his restraints and is able to truly take in his surroundings. He walks around, inquiring what is
around him, and his eyes begin to ache as he discovers the fire that has illuminated the puppets
shows he had watched his whole life. The man realizes that what he had always believed to be his
reality is false,

Essay about A Greater Intelligence Revealed in Dwellings
A Greater Intelligence Revealed in Dwellings
Linda Hogan writes in her preface to Dwellings that "there is a terrestrial intelligence that lies
beyond our human knowing and grasping." This is the main point that is constantly reiterated
throughout the book, and this is the point that makes the book so important.
The trouble with the earth today is that humans have become too smart; so smart that they question
everything they once took for granted, and being unable to explain it, discount it as unreal. Science,
the very thing that has catapulted us into our present state of 'greatness,' is also the human evil that
has isolated us from everything we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consider even our connotations with the word environment. Today, the word means nature, the wild,
the earth, our failing ecosystem. Is this really our environment? We are so removed from it that most
people cannot stand to be in it, except to view its anomalies like those at Yellowstone from
isolation–tank–like recreational vehicles.
Hogan takes things that happen in the human sphere and turns them inside out, showing us the
sociological innards that expose the enormous distance between what we know and what we think
we know. Her example of chimpanzees shows us something scientists have been trying to hide. In
teaching them sign language, we realize they have feelings, opinions, and know what's going on
around them. They aren't just like ignorant babies with an 'instinct' to eat and mate. People
frequently make exceptions for their dogs. They believe their dogs understand what they tell them,
that their dogs care what kind of dog food they get, that they feel jealousy when the cat gets
attention. Imagine if people felt this kind of empathy and respect to every species on the planet.
Hogan deliberately picks out animals that are displeasing to most people, bats, snakes, wolves,
maggots, ants, and writes about them as living, loving animals–just like the rest of us. They are
aware of the process that we have long forgotten.
I was thinking about birds the other day. There were several of them feeding at my bird

William Craft House And Slave Dwelling
Introduction
Incorporating Mississippi Works Progress Administration Slave Narratives, the diary of Emma
Finley, and excerpts of the Finley family cookbook from 1858 with artifact evidence found at the
Hugh Craft House from the foundation repair in 2008 and excavation artifacts from Fall 2014 and
Spring 2015, together, will give a greater insight to the foodways of the Craft family and slaves
residing on the site. The purpose of this paper is to examine the artifacts collected, cataloged, and
analyzed thus far from the Hugh Craft house and slave dwelling site and compare the findings to
analysis of slave diets throughout the south up until 1860 to determine if the Hugh Craft family and
their nine slaves shared food or food patterns.
Background
Hugh Craft travelled from Georgia to Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1839. In 1851, Craft rebuilt the
main house, but kept the original slave dwelling structure that dates to the early 19th century The
slave dwelling, still standing, was used as a detached kitchen from the early 19th century up until
possibly the Great Depression or later. According to a United States census record, during the 1860s
Craft owned nine slaves; two adult females, ages 28 and 25, five male slaves, ages 16, 15, 9, 3, and
one age not legible, and two female children, ages 12 and 64. Hugh Craft owned higher than the
average urban slave dwelling, usually having 1–3 slaves . A 1850s United States census record

Towards A Phenomenology Of Dwelling Summary
In Towards a Phenomenology of Dwelling, Lisa Guenther puts forth thought on dwelling, and doing
so responsibly. She brings up the idea of a person's daimon, which I like to think of as a person's
conscious. It tells you the possible things that you can do, both good and bad, but ultimately, only
you can decide what you will do. The visual of an angel and the devil sitting upon either shoulder
comes to my mind. Others are more aware of your daimon than you are, and this is because there are
parts of yourself that you do not see. Whether this be physical, like your habits, tendencies, and
body language or not visible like your desires, most of the time, others are more aware of this than
you are. Desires influence every decision that you make,

The Dwelling Place A Plantation Epic Summary
The Dwelling Place, A Plantation Epic, is a book by Erskine Clark about plantation life in the
coastal "low country" of Georgia from the beginning of the 19th century to the end of the American
Civil War. It chronicles the life of Charles Colcock Jones (1804–1863), a member of a wealthy
slave–owning planter family in Liberty County, Georgia. As with many plantation families, Charles
was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and take over the family plantation business. While
training for this at a counting house in Savannah, he received a calling to pursue a life as a
Presbyterian minister. At about the same time, due to some unfortunate deaths in his family, Charles
became the recipient of some tracts of land and the slaves that went with them. He now had to
decide between pursuing the life of a planter and supporting his family or following his calling to be
a minister. He chose a rather difficult path, he was going to become a minister and bring the gospel

Art Within Cave Dwellings Dating
One of the earliest evidences of the belief in a higher power comes from deep within the "Lascaux
Labyrinth", a deep cave "decorated by our Paleolithic ancestors in the stone age, seventeen thousand
years ago"(Armstrong 2). The great numbers and locations of art within the Lascaux and
surrounding region gives evidence that these were sacred places for the purpose of rituals, and some
have compared these dwellings to temples (Armstrong 3). Whether art within cave dwellings dating
back to the Paleolithic era, to magnificent churches rising to great heights around the world, the
wondrous temples of the Mayans, a mountain that appears to seamlessly morph into the city of
Machu Picchu, to trailers, tents and fortified compounds, belief in a power higher than one's self has
been deeply ingrained throughout centuries and a multitude of cultures. These different places are
what many refer to as a church, a place to record and follow the rituals specific to their belief and to
worship. Through the generations of the development of the human psyche, belief in a higher power
is taught young and ingrained for many, yet meaningless for some. Furthermore, throughout the
evolution of many centuries, it is inevitable that branches of these religions will follow a different
path, create new churches to better practice their views of religion, and for some, belief in a higher
power can be contorted to the preaching's and worship of hate. There is a fine line between
preaching scriptures and

Narrative Essay On High School Basketball
My freshman year of high school basketball was almost coming to an end. Our record was pretty
stellar, and we needed one more win to get the wildcard, which meant we would automatically make
it to state. My team was playing against Malcolm, in a really tight game. We were down by two
points and Coach Henkel put me in to shoot a three–pointer, but both of our hopes and dreams were
short lived. I missed the shot, and I lost the game for us. I was devastated, and so was everyone else.
As I sat in the locker room, all I could do was stare at the ground. The only thing running through
my mind was, no one is going to trust me with the ball anymore or worse yet, everyone is going to
be mad at me. These thoughts were slowly tearing me down, day by day. But that was until Coach
Henkel talked to me, and told me not to worry about missing the shot. He told me everyone misses,
and that he wasn't to worried. So, I was given two options, dwell on the past and let that affect my
playing, or forget about it and move on.
I have been given multiple opportunities where not dwelling on the past has come into play. In the
eighth grade I helped someone cheat on a test, and got caught. Yes, it was a bad decision and I have
definitely learned from it. I had to serve a detention and then always thought that Mr. Sass was
going to hate me forever. But I didn't dwell on what happened and learned from my mistakes. I had
to learn to move on because the past was the past. Thinking about the mistake I had

The Dollie Dwelling
I balanced carefully atop the chair as I rattled through a menagerie of bottles and gift bags.
Unexpectedly, as I pushed a bottle out of my way, I could hear distinct sounds coming from it. I
pulled the bottle out of the closet to investigate. What I saw inside the bottle was astounding. There
were tiny, doll–sized people inside a doll–sized bottle house! Very gently, I took the bottle and
placed it on a nearby table. Amazingly, the people inside the house didn't pay any attention to me.
They talked in tiny voices, too quiet for me to understand. I was too eager to think. "Hi guys!! Nice
place!" I whispered at the bottle. Needless to say, the tiny people were startled. "Vivienne! Coxey!
Come quick! There's a...monster outside!" I heard one of the tiny dolls shout. Two dainty girls
entered the room from a ladder. All the people, there were four of them, turned to face me. One of
them, with wavy black hair and a frilly red dress, spoke up. "Who are you?! And what do you want
here? I'll have you know that I am Mistral Papillon, world–renowned explorer," she said, in a
striking, cold manner. I looked at them and smiled lightly. "Um... sorry to disturb you? You were
just in my closet in a bottle. I hate to break it to you, but you're just tiny little dolls in a tiny little
house in a bottle," I told Mistral Papillon calmly. The dolls were taken aback by this. They looked at
one another, speaking in whispers. "We never knew...everything I know is a lie now... by the way,

"Planning is a continuously evolving process, at times chaotic and often contested, difficult and
frustrating." (Thompson, S. 2007). The redevelopment of an existing large dwelling into a new
tavern/restaurant will be considered carefully as "...at the heart of planning is the community, and
the education, research and practices relating to the planned use of land, its associated systems, and
of the natural and built environmental, social and economic impacts and implications of the use of
land." (Thompson, S. 2007). In order for the developer to have the greatest chance of successfully

Zoning– Planners need to plan a town's future. Zoning addresses the issues of land use, density and
building height for certain areas. (Thompson, S. 2007). Zoning is a prime tool for guiding
development of a town/suburb and sets helpful standards for long developed areas and is also useful
for neighbourhood preservation.
2. Required Setbacks– Refers to the placement of the building on its block of land. In this case, the
building is already pre–existing so the council will more than likely only need to consider the
setback requirements for the new addition to the rear of the property. Issues such as proximity to the
boundary line and therefore neighbours will need to be addressed.
3. Car Parking Requirements– The existing building was originally not designed to be a restaurant
come tavern. As the building will now be repurposed the developer will need to allow for car
parking plans within both the planning and building approval stages.
4. Floor Area Ratio– can be defined as "The total square feet of a building divided by the total
square feet of the lot the building is located on." In more urban areas this ratio tends to be greater to
reflect the density of the area's construction. (Investopedia, 2011)
5. Landscaping Requirements– Usually, an approved landscaping plan would be required for any
new commercial or residential construction. Landscaping plans may also show utilities and

Dwelling in Possibilities Analysis Essay
Rhetorical Analysis Is our youth doomed? Mark Edmundson begs this question in his essay,
"Dwelling in Possibilities." His essay explains how the lives of young people have changed
drastically over the years. Edmundson, professor at the University of Virginia, says his students are
constantly "going" and that they never stop; they never settle in fear of missing something great. In
lieu of this, Edmundson says that they are, "victims of their own hunger for speed" (Edmundson2).
He also adds that his students, and young people in general, use today's technology to be
"everywhere at once" (watching a movie, instant messaging, talking on the phone, and glancing at a
textbook) and are therefore, "not anywhere in particular" (Edmundson ... Show more content on

But, again, that is debatable and an author can never go wrong by proposing a solution when writing
to persuade. Besides omitting a solution, Edmundson does an excellent job persuading his readers,
especially with the use of references. Most writers, when writing to persuade, include facts and
statistics to support their viewpoint. Edmundson, however, refers to authors, and very famous ones
at that. This is a very successful method because his whole argument has to do with the lack of
culture, art, and writing, in today's youth. Referencing these authors really helps the reader to sense
where he is coming from and helps them to sense his passion for literature. Some of the authors
referenced include: Thoreau, Immanuel Kant, Gertrude Stein, Nietzche, Lord Byron, Wordsworth,
and Emerson. One reference, in particular, serves as an excellent example of how Edmundson's
references are successful in getting his point across. He compares youth to the contrasting Byron
and Wordsworth, Byron to how his students are today, and Wordsworth to how it ought to be. He
states that Byron "wished to never be bored," as does today's youth (Edmundson 11). Edmundson
also mentions, "students now are Romantics– of a Byronic sort," and that, "he would have adored
their world of fast travel, fast communication, and fast relationships" (Edmundson 11). In contrast to
Byron and today's youth, Edmundson says that

Ancient Roman Dwellings Evolved Architecturally In Time
Ancient Roman dwellings evolved architecturally in time from simple huts in the earliest times, to
sophisticated and extremely long–lived structures in the later Republic and Imperial Rome following
the annexation of the Greek city–states. This is very evident in many Italian and Greek cities where
archaeologists have found different occupational levels, with each lower architectural strata being
much more ancient (Lavan, Özgenel, & Sarantis, 2007). Typically, however, Roman architecture
refers to the period from the establishment of the Roman Republic (6 century BC) to the relocation
of the capital to Constantinople in 330AD. An architectural period supported by two great
innovations: the cement and the arch.
The Romans adopted the lime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wealthier people had much more elaborated houses, with multiple rooms, courtyards, gardens, and
pools. This architecture provided security but also private open space for family recreation. We can
get a glimpse of how livable these houses where from surviving specimens in old villages in
Mediterranean islands, like Crete, that also preserve the Roman family structure of pater familias, in
which three or four generations live together under the leadership of the oldest male. While each
sub–family has its own quarters, they all share the courtyard and dinner. The pre–school cousins,
and any domestic animals, play together safely all day long in the enclosed courtyard, under the
supervision of the grandparents. Such an arrangement not only pools the resources but, also, free the
parents for working outside. In such a semi–coenobitic life–style, the distinction between siblings
and cousins is not as clear–cut as in Western societies. However, the Roman domus also housed the
servants and slaves.
However, just like today, the vast majority of the Roman urbanites lived in cramped, multi–story
apartment buildings called insulae. Even so, rich and poor people did not live segregated ghettos;
luxurious domi and shabby insulae were intermingled in the cities. At first, these buildings were
made with timber, and mud brick; however, the concrete allowed the Roman tenement buildings to
reach new heights, with some being seven stories

basics of dwelling insurance and why you should purchase it for your investment properties.
Dwelling insurance provides coverage to the structure of your investment property but not any of its
contents, making it ideal for properties you own that do not contain any of your personal belongings.

Heidegger's Conception Of Meaning
Heidegger "When we say sky, we are already thinking of the three along with it, but we give no
thought to the simple oneness of the four." A person builds because he is searching for something or
does not understand what it is. Therefore, in order to understand it a word or meaning is given. As a
result, this word can mean anything or others might perceive it as such with their own will. The
necessity to understand it lies with what we can create or is surrounding us. A dwelling is a dwelling
because we say is a dwelling. The meaning of dwelling is given to a certain things, hence, it serves
that purpose, but it can otherwise possess another. We seek words to make everything simple to
acknowledge that something is there in the first place. The language and significance of things can
go and new ones take their places, yet it would still possess the same nature as before if associated
with its original idea. Relations are formed to create thoughts ... Show more content on

Norberg–Schulz, emphasised that without the connection to man or person it becomes a
misrepresentation. The connection towards what a person illustrates depends on the sources and
ideas they are willing to possess and invoke. The idea can be invoked, but without the reason and
meaning of the man to support it, it just becomes an idea or meaning. Like Heidegger said, to
understand it needs to have a meaning. Yet, that meaning is empty and meaningless without the
critical aspect of man, as Norberg–Schulz tries to tell. A dwelling is a dwelling because the person
uses it to dwell thus it functions as such and the meaning of dwelling is supported. Anything created
will eventually have a presence or be recognized, but only if the man become part of its creation. It
either becomes a sense of expressive creation or keep the meaning or word as given. When this
happens the many meanings become "Being" that Heidegger was trying to

Characteristics And Restrictions Of Valued Activities...
This study evaluated napping characteristics and restrictions in valued activities participation among
community–dwelling older adults. In unadjusted models, we found an association between both
intentional and unintentional napping and increased odds of restrictions in at least one valued
activity, in comparison to rarely or never napping. While this association held after adjustment for
demographic and health characteristics, there was no association between napping intention and
restrictions in valued activities after further adjustment for depressive and anxiety symptoms when
compared to rarely or never nappers. Among nappers, average nap duration and frequent napping
were associated with restrictions in at least one valued activity, while napping intention was not.
Moreover, when comparing individual activities among nappers, the strongest association was
between napping characteristics (i.e. frequency, nap duration) and restrictions in going out for
enjoyment followed by visiting with friends and family. Altogether, these results indicate an
independent association between frequent, longer naps and restrictions in daytime functioning
among community–dwelling older adults, especially among those who nap. Napping may be sign of
daytime sleepiness which may lead to restrictions in valued activities. Our findings are similar to
those of studies on excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) that have utilized self–reported napping as a
marker for EDS. One community–based study

Dwelling about my own feelings led the direction of frustration and anger as I grew older, feeling

cage, confined to prison and when released, it was madness, not intending to only injure, I wanted to
see blood, tasting this flavor in my mouth before a confrontation. Choosing who I wanted to

grade the nestling soul fell asleep. There was a boy in school that began tormenting me every day

is fenced in, any other structure inside the fence is considered an extension of the dwelling, even if
those buildings are not used as living quarters. If there is, for example, a farmhouse, a barn, and a

In such cases, one party's breaking and entering into the other party's living space at night with the
intent of committing a felony will constitute burglary.
Many jurisdictions have also eliminated the element of "dwelling" from the burglary definition and
consider burglary the entering onto any premises with the intent to commit a felony therein.
As we have said, the breaking and entering must be done at night in order to qualify as burglary.
However, the breaking and entering do not have to be done on the same night. That is to say, the
defendant can create the opening in the dwelling on one night and then use that opening to gain
entry on another night. Please remember, however, that, as we said before, there must be a causal
relationship between the breaking and entering so that, even though the breaking and entering can
occur on different nights, the breaking must be the means that the defendant uses to gain access to
the dwelling.

consider burglary the entering onto any premises at any time with the intent to commit a felony

The New World : A Final Examination Of God And Man 's...
The New World: a final examination of God and man's relationship The Bible consists of a wide
array of stories and themes that has captured audiences' attention and interest across borders and
time for a number of reasons. However, it is particularly interesting to compare the beginning and
end of the Bible – Genesis and Revelation – in order to observe on what terms the dynamic
relationship between man and God began and ended. It can be argued that one's understanding of
this relationship between man and God is vital in one's understanding of the deeper meaning behind
the stories within the Bible. Therefore, by comparing and contrasting analogous moments from the
first verses of Genesis and the last verses of Revelation, one can see ... Show more content on

This suggests that their bond can never be broken no matter how much pain they cause one another.
Also, the suggestion that God – and associates – has entered this eternal partnership with man
conveys the trust God had to have in man to remain faithful and obedient to his guidance in order to
foster a healthy relationship. Moreover, Jesus continues this assertion of immortality when he says
to John: "'do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am
alive forever and ever; and I have the keys of death and Hades'" (Rev 1.17). This continuation of
God being the "beginning and end" emphasizes the importance of this eternal relationship because it
is God that created man and God that will (hopefully) greet man once they return to the dust they
were created from. Moreover, Coogan explains in the footnotes that "Hades, used here with its
synonym Death, is the abode of the dead" and that "Jesus has the keys to release those confined
within its gates" (Coogan 2156). This further shows the eternal nature of God – and his vessels –
that is tied to mankind. In the beginning God gives life to man and in the end God is there to guide
man to the afterlife. Therefore, the importance of examining the books of Genesis and Revelation
together can be seen by comparing and contrasting the state of mankind and God's relationship in
the first chapters of Genesis and the last chapters of Revelations – which shows

Effects Of Common Law Burglary
1. Has this man committed common law burglary?
Common law burglary is the trespassory breaking and entering of the dwelling house of another, in
the nighttime, with the specific intent to commit a felony therein.
A dwelling is a place regularly used to sleep and Nighttime is the period when the countenance of a
person cannot be discerned by natural sunlight.
A strange man demanded that Amanda let him in her home (dwelling house), at 11 o'clock at
night(nighttime) with the threatening gesture of pulling out a gun. Once inside, he took her money,
engagement ring, and left (intent and committing a felony). His crime meets all the elements of
common law burglary, except "breaking" by actual force. However, several circumstances of
entering by constructive force constitute "breaking"
Constructive force constitutes "breaking" when its obtained with: entry by fraud, threatening the use
of force, entry through a chimney, or having a servant or coconspirator open the door from the
inside.
The stranger broke into Amanda's home when she declined to let him in the first time, he pulled out
a gun in a gesture to threaten harm. She opened the door out of fear for her life. Thus, a breaking in
with constructive force.
Therefore, a common law burglary has been committed.

Analysis of Edmundson's essay on how technology shapes students

  • 1. Analysis Of Dwelling In Possibilities By Mark Edmundson Mark Edmundsons' "Dwelling In Possibilities" is propounding his thoughts on the next generation, chiefly on students that are attending his classes, millennials. After observing a few of his classes Edmundson has interpreted that the new technology of the time has made student better equipped and even eager to learn, however after seeing student on YouTube and Email accounts Edmundson begins to question If his initial thoughts were true, he then begins on his complex trail of thought, taking the reader with him. To begin his essay Edmundson takes a comparison to his summer life to that of a college students, and contrasts the two. Amazed with difference he then starts about how people today seems to be multitasking by being multiple places ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This isn't really a main point but it is supporting the issue and is implied through most of the beginning and in a few other parts of Edmundsons' essay. The second idea that leaches from the first would be how millennials were the first to have been cultivated from a young age to utilize and master such machinery. This is discreetly said in his essay as "Internet technology was on hand for my current students from about the time they were eight years old" and "Internet seems to me to have shaped their generation as much as the multichannel TV, with that critical device, the remote control, shaped the students who registered for my classes a decade ago. What is the Internet to current students?". Lastly and the underlying idea of Edmundsons' paper would be, that the reliance millennials have on technology, a problem that no other generation has faced, could be their road to ruin. This is affirmed multiple times in the essay restated with different words, an example of this would be the title "Our Students' Spectacular Hunger for Life Makes Them Radically Vulnerable" and a sentence that is stated in the beginning of the essay "These students may go on to do great and good things, but they also present dangers to themselves and to the common future". With what was just written It is a bit enigmatic to comprehend, maybe not to college professor like edmundson of course, but to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Reflective Essay On Loss Of Life Just the mere thought of dying makes me feel petrified. In just a snap of a finger it can alter someone's life. No one really ought to think about their own death. Thinking about it felt like it would happen sooner. To come to the point, I am not yet ready. Hence, I was still enjoying this stunning life I was facing. I am still dreaming and desiring. I am not yet pleased of what I accomplished. According to S. Luper (2014), death is said to be the end of life. He said that being conscious doesn't literally meant being alive. Dead means a loss of capacity. Advocate of the loss of life claims that if it exists, it is alive, but if not, then it is not alive. Believing in afterlife will be the only thing which will make us feel that this event in our life will be our transition to the next big step we are going to face. So we need to keep our feet on the ground, continue our faith and discover the whole new world waiting for us. I am fully aware that death will come. Maybe today, tomorrow, or the next day. No one really knows. Before this loss of life I will undergo, I look forward to leaving my loved ones in a peaceful condition. As a matter of fact, I believe that acceptance would be my best preparation for my morality. Since no one knows when this so called judgment day will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As I always tell myself, every end will give me a new beginning and this time it was my life with God. A new dimension that will surely amaze me. The afterlife that I believe will let me experience the extreme happiness that won't be experienced here on earth. Stated in John 11:23–26, "Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. • 5. Marc Antoine Laugier: An Essay On Architecture ARCHHTC 236 – Assignment 1 (Annotation #1 –'An Essay On Architecture'– Marc Antoine Laugier) Marc Antoine Laugiers : An Essay on Architecture (translated and republished in 1977) is an important text that opens with the authors belief that architectural design has and should come only from the necessary requirements of man and not from the need of mere ornamentation, as expressed through his story of mans primitive hut where branches may become a roof, or trunks columns and so on. Early on in his essay, Laugier states that Beauty is the "combination of simplicity and nobility " –specifying one of his driving beliefs throughout the text that a simple building that meets only the mere requirements of our needs is what is 'beautiful' and perhaps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author then goes on to discuss the idea of the Fourfold, being the connection between the Earth, Sky, Mortals and divinities which as Heidegger says 'pervades to the dwelling', suggesting that the 'dwelling' is linked to the mortal and helps 'escort' it while still maintaining a relation to the other three . The excerpt concludes with Heidegger proposing that the problem with the dwelling is not simply a lack of homes but that people or 'mortals' are looking to understand the dwelling rather than simply learning to experience it –"Mortals ever search anew for the nature of dwelling, that they must ever learn to dwell. " – suggesting the purpose of the text as an emphasis on what the dwelling is, an idea separate from the building but also as Beistegui points out Heidegger sees it as 'the very essence of ... • 7. Building Dwelling And Thinking Analysis In our daily life we have different meanings of building, dwelling and thinking. We built buildings to dwell, but we do not dwell because of buildings. As humans, we like to dwell in some place. When we went to the Fort Greene Park, we saw the fourfold that Martin Heidegger talks about in his article "Building, Dwelling, thinking". These fourfold are earth, sky, morals, and divinities. First, we saw unity at this park between the green land, trees and buildings. This park includes part of high ground and a white building at the center of the park where the soldiers buried. Also, we saw birds fly from one tree to another. They took the park's trees dwelling for them. We could see the sky from everywhere at the park. It is horizontal and it gives us the feeling of freedom. Also, we saw people from different ages. We saw children was playing and enjoying with their time, young people do exercises and some older people talk to each other. I found that this park is a dwell for many people such as who do exercises, spend good time at playing and those people come again to this park to remember good situations and times that they ... • 9. Types Of Dwellings Used By Ancient Romans Introduction Up to that time, the western world had never seen an empire as extensive and encompassing as the Roman Empire (Mark, 2011). Even after her fall tales of her exploits continue to be told and retold. However, the Roman Empire was not merely comprised of emperors, generals and poets. Like all civilizations that came before it and that have come since, the domain of Rome comprised of many different people from varying social classes who lived in homes just like people today. For this unit's discussion, I will discuss the layout and function of the various types of dwellings used by the ancient Romans and provide my thoughts regarding how those comparisons compare to the dwellings of today. Discussion The type of dwelling occupied by an ancient Roman was contingent on their place on the social ladder and their vocation (Kirby, 2001b). Furthermore, whereas a farmer would prefer to live out in the country, a merchant, in all likelihood, would prefer to live in the city (Kirby, 2001b). Not unlike today, a substantial portion of the urban population lived in apartments (Kirby, 2001a). Most rentals were located in large complexes called Insula, some of which were as tall as seventy feet (seven stories) (Kirby, 2001a). These apartments would have been crowded usually composed of a single room that doubled as sleeping and living area (Moulton, 1998b). Tenets would have shared a common culinary and sanitary area while plumbing would not have reached those residing on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The And Design Practices By Martin Heidegger When is Architecture Architecture? "Only if we are capable of dwelling, only then can we build." This claim was made by German philosopher Martin Heidegger in his lecture 'Building Dwelling Thinking'. In the lecture Heidegger goes beyond architectural and design practices by referring 'building' not only in architectural construction, but to the whole range of human productive activity. When thinking about 'dwelling' it is usually connected to buildings. The goal of a building is to allow one to dwell, but not all buildings are in the domain of dwelling. Christian Nordberg–Schulz describes 'place' as that which in we dwell, within which we are at home. The truck driver is at home on the highway, but he does not have his accommodations there; the working woman is at home in her office, but does not have her dwelling place there. Dwelling is not only limited to the dwelling place. Schulz stated that dwelling as being in a harmonious relationship with one's surrounding environment. He believes that dwelling is based in the idea that our dwelling in place grants us an identity and a meaning that we would otherwise lack. Thus, in order to dwell in a place one must personally connect with that place which leads us to exclude others from that place as a means to affirm that identity. Many critics claim that if place is an essentially relative concept based on a personal sense of belonging then dwelling must be too. In terms of these theories on dwelling; architecture and ... • 13. Summary Of The Ojibway Creation Story The Ojibway creation story portrays the ecological purpose of "apprehending your dwelling place." The Original Man was able to apprehend his dwelling place by living in harmony with the rest of creation on Earth. Later on, the tribes that originated from the Original Man began to fight one another over land and disrespected the living things of Earth. Since the people were no longer apprehending their dwelling place, Kitchi–Manitou sent a flood to purify the Earth. New land was created when Nanaboozhoo worked with the animals to retrieve earth from deep beneath the flood waters. The cooperation of humans and animals is a critical part of apprehension and allowed for a new dwelling place to be created. The Ojibway creation story fulfills ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This piece shows the area between Fuchin river, its mostly He painted this peace in his later years. This piece gives you a feeling of a larger landscape that could stretch even further than most would think. It makes me think of Fan Kauns Travelers By Streams and Mountains. The compositions are different, but the idea of using a sort atmosphere feeling that you get from a lot of Chinese ink painting. As author Hung Sheng explains Haung Dongwang used many ink and brush techniques. Two of the main techniques shown are hemp fiber textural strokes and alum head textural strokes. Hemp fiber strokes were mostly used to describe boulders, while alum head strokes were mostly used small angular rocks on top of hills. These painting techniques show the influences of master ink paintings done by Dong Yaung and Jaurn. Huang's Dwelling in Fuchin Mountains shows not only that, but beautiful composition that enhances the brush strokes. Daiost painting like this show off the purity of the landscape almost like its untouched and seems like we're looking at a remote part of the world that no one else has ever seen. • 17. Reflection Paper Dwelling, Heidegger also insists, has a certain emotional state of being attached to it. People tend to interpret the experience of dwelling with the sense of home. Dwelling imbues the experiencer with a sense of peace and satisfaction. It is a safe space where they are free to be themselves and a place that need not be either specific nor stationary. In fact, the famous saying "home is where the heart is" perfectly illustrates that home is a feeling without the need for a dwelling to contain it. For example, a truck driver may feel at home on the road, but his home is not a formal dwelling. Thus, the feeling of home can be present without the existence of a dwelling. However, according to Heidegger, building and dwelling go hand in hand. Heidegger also considers "thinking" an important part of the process such as thinking about the relationships between building and dwelling, or the nature of the connections that humans should have with the buildings they dwell within. On this note, it would be wise to consider another meaning of the term bauen when relating building to dwelling: dwelling is the manner in which mortals are on the Earth p 2. This definition is important to the relationship between building and thinking because it spurs one to contemplate this particular meaning. If building is dwelling then the building could be the orifice for mortality and divinity alike. As we moved births and deaths from the home to the hospital we lost touch with these ... • 19. Pros And Cons Of Spirit Family Support Shelter DISCUSSION A. Does Spirit Family Support Shelter constitute as a dwelling under the Fair Housing Act (FHA)? The first issue is whether Spirit Family Support Shelter qualifies as a dwelling under the Fair Housing Act. Under the FHA, a dwelling is any building, structure, or portion thereof, for purposes of occupancy, as a residence by one or more families, and any vacant land offered for sale or lease for the construction, or location of any such building, structure, or portion thereof. Fair Housing Act of 1968, § 807(a), 42 U.S.C.A. § 3602(b). In practice, several Third Circuit Courts have demarcated "residence" to mean a temporary or permanent dwelling place, abode, or habitation that one intends to return to, as opposed to a place temporary sojourn or transient visit. Defiore v. City Rescue Mission of New Castle, 995 F.Supp.2d 413, 418 (W.D.Pa 2013) (quoting Webster's Third International Dictionary 1931). Subsequently, there must be proof that the shelter is intended for occupants planning to stay in the shelter for a significant period of time, and that the occupants viewed the shelter as a place to return to during that period. U.S. v. Columbus Country Club, 915 F.2d 877, 881 (3rd Cir. 1990). In addition, if consideration is given with regards to the sale or rental of a building or structure, and ... • 21. Analysis Of Heidegger's Building Dwelling Thinking After the destruction in Germany due to the World War 2, the struggle for survival and inhabitation had been the most and immediate business for the people. The war caused the destruction of near one–fifth of the German houses between 1939 and 1945. In West Germany, there were required almost two and a half million houses for the refugees and another million for younger families. It was where the German philosopher Martin Heidegger's Freiburg and Black forest were located. People shared accommodation there till they could find their own. Then arose the question of termed as "Wohnungsfrage" that means "Dwelling Question" due to this housing crisis. In its response Heidegger wrote his famous "Building Dwelling Thinking". Building Dwelling Thinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his essay, Heidegger discusses the type of dwelling which is poetic in a sense. He then questions further that are the dwellings poetic in a true sense if yes then are other dwellings incompatible with the poetic ones? He further questions about the coexistence of the man's social and historical life. For Heidegger, poetry is the things that let the man dwell and dwelling is through building. He believes that art of building is very much similar to the art of poetry. The way the verses in a poem depict a simple fact in a really creative way is same as that of the technique of constructing a building and then making the building alive by dwelling in that particular building. This philosophy of Heidegger is reflected in his architectural design sense that he connects the building styles with human life. This poem tends to remove the misconceptions that poems snatch away the realities of this world or poetry is mere fantasy but it's not like that. Actually, poetry brings fantasy to life. • 23. A Comprehensive Analysis Of Davidson 's Article,... In Mark Davidson's article, 'Displacement, Space and Dwelling: Placing Gentrification Debate', he cites several contemporary case studies where certain deteriorated areas have been targeted for redevelopment and subsequent evictions have taken place. Using several philosophical authors, such as Heidegger and Lefebvre, Davidson's focuses on the effect spatial metaphors have on displacement, and how these concepts tie into the conceptualization of space. In this paper I will compile a thorough summary of the article and formulate a comprehensive analysis of Davidson's arguments as well as his sources. Davidson begins his article with arguably one of the most notable and recent subjects of gentrification, 1520 Sedgwick, the birthplace of Hip–Hop. This dilapidated apartment building's owners "announced they planned to leave New York State's Mitchell–Lama programe" (pg. 2), which would result in the current residents evictions. Essentially the program offered tax incentives to building owners who limit equity to maintain low cost units. However, in lieu of tax incentives many building owners have elected to leave the program in order to make more profit via higher costing units, which current residents cannot afford. In the case of 1520 Sedgwick current and former residents, such as the credited father of Hip–Hop Kool Herc, have veiled their mission to prevent the gentrification process from consuming their building by petitioning for a historic listing as well as offering to ... • 27. The Allegory Of The Cave Plato's iconic "Parable of the Cave" explores the give and take of knowledge and freedom. The story touches on enlightenment, the overwhelming fear of the unknown, and if it is even possible to gain the knowledge that brings liberation. Throughout the story, the reader is essentially faced with the question of if knowledge is power, or ignorance is bliss. Plato's "Parable of the Cave" begins by setting the scene of men dwelling in a cave since birth. These men have their necks and legs restrained, keeping their attention facing forward at all times. Throughout their lives, the cave dwellers watch puppet–like shows on these walls of the cave. The puppet shows are created by a fire burning towards the upper back part of the cave, and the figures casting the shadows are controlled by the "carriers" (Levenson & Westphal, 37). After watching the puppet shows their whole lives, the cave dwellers have come to know this as their reality. Although the puppet shows are only shadows of objects, the men find the shadows to be a tangible presence in the cave, unaware of what they are actually witnessing. After years of watching the shadows on the cave walls, one man is released from his restraints and is able to truly take in his surroundings. He walks around, inquiring what is around him, and his eyes begin to ache as he discovers the fire that has illuminated the puppets shows he had watched his whole life. Essay about A Greater Intelligence Revealed in Dwellings A Greater Intelligence Revealed in Dwellings Linda Hogan writes in her preface to Dwellings that "there is a terrestrial intelligence that lies beyond our human knowing and grasping." This is the main point that is constantly reiterated throughout the book, and this is the point that makes the book so important. The trouble with the earth today is that humans have become too smart; so smart that they question everything they once took for granted, and being unable to explain it, discount it as unreal. Science, the very thing that has catapulted us into our present state of 'greatness,' is also the human evil that has isolated us from everything we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consider even our connotations with the word environment. Today, the word means nature, the wild, the earth, our failing ecosystem. Is this really our environment? We are so removed from it that most people cannot stand to be in it, except to view its anomalies like those at Yellowstone from isolation–tank–like recreational vehicles. Hogan takes things that happen in the human sphere and turns them inside out, showing us the sociological innards that expose the enormous distance between what we know and what we think we know. Her example of chimpanzees shows us something scientists have been trying to hide. In teaching them sign language, we realize they have feelings, opinions, and know what's going on around them. They aren't just like ignorant babies with an 'instinct' to eat and mate. People frequently make exceptions for their dogs. They believe their dogs understand what they tell them, that their dogs care what kind of dog food they get, that they feel jealousy when the cat gets attention. Imagine if people felt this kind of empathy and respect to every species on the planet. Hogan deliberately picks out animals that are displeasing to most people, bats, snakes, wolves, maggots, ants, and writes about them as living, loving animals–just like the rest of us. They are aware of the process that we have long forgotten.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the artifacts collected, cataloged, and analyzed thus far from the Hugh Craft house and slave dwelling site and compare the findings to analysis of slave diets throughout the south up until 1860 to determine if the Hugh Craft family and their nine slaves shared food or food patterns. Background Hugh Craft travelled from Georgia to Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1839. In 1851, Craft rebuilt the main house, but kept the original slave dwelling structure that dates to the early 19th century The slave dwelling, still standing, was used as a detached kitchen from the early 19th century up until possibly the Great Depression or later. • 44. The Dwelling Place A Plantation Epic Summary The Dwelling Place, A Plantation Epic, is a book by Erskine Clark about plantation life in the coastal "low country" of Georgia from the beginning of the 19th century to the end of the American Civil War. It chronicles the life of Charles Colcock Jones (1804–1863), a member of a wealthy slave–owning planter family in Liberty County, Georgia. As with many plantation families, Charles was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and take over the family plantation business. While training for this at a counting house in Savannah, he received a calling to pursue a life as a Presbyterian minister. At about the same time, due to some unfortunate deaths in his family, Charles became the recipient of some tracts of land and the slaves that went with them. He now had to decide between pursuing the life of a planter and supporting his family or following his calling to be a minister. He chose a rather difficult path, he was going to become a minister and bring the gospel and Christianity to the slaves on his plantations and those of his neighbors while managing a profitable plantation business. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the hypocrisy that Charles Colcock Jones developed as he tried to find a balance between these two contradictory careers. Even before Charles had left the plantation, he became aware of a perceived difference between the white world and the world of the slaves, a difference that would be used as an ideological tool to provide justification for the ... Art Within Cave Dwellings Dating One of the earliest evidences of the belief in a higher power comes from deep within the "Lascaux Labyrinth", a deep cave "decorated by our Paleolithic ancestors in the stone age, seventeen thousand years ago"(Armstrong 2). The great numbers and locations of art within the Lascaux and surrounding region gives evidence that these were sacred places for the purpose of rituals, and some have compared these dwellings to temples (Armstrong 3). Whether art within cave dwellings dating back to the Paleolithic era, to magnificent churches rising to great heights around the world, the wondrous temples of the Mayans, a mountain that appears to seamlessly morph into the city of Machu Picchu, to trailers, tents and fortified compounds, belief in a power higher than one's self has been deeply ingrained throughout centuries and a multitude of cultures. These different places are what many refer to as a church, a place to record and follow the rituals specific to their belief and to worship. Through the generations of the development of the human psyche, belief in a higher power is taught young and ingrained for many, yet meaningless for some. Furthermore, throughout the evolution of many centuries, it is inevitable that branches of these religions will follow a different path, create new churches to better practice their views of religion, and for some, belief in a higher power can be contorted to the preaching's and worship of hate. Our record was pretty stellar, and we needed one more win to get the wildcard, which meant we would automatically make it to state. My team was playing against Malcolm, in a really tight game. We were down by two points and Coach Henkel put me in to shoot a three–pointer, but both of our hopes and dreams were short lived. I missed the shot, and I lost the game for us. I was devastated, and so was everyone else. As I sat in the locker room, all I could do was stare at the ground. The only thing running through my mind was, no one is going to trust me with the ball anymore or worse yet, everyone is going to be mad at me. These thoughts were slowly tearing me down, day by day. But that was until Coach Henkel talked to me, and told me not to worry about missing the shot. He told me everyone misses, and that he wasn't to worried. I have been given multiple opportunities where not dwelling on the past has come into play. In the eighth grade I helped someone cheat on a test, and got caught. Yes, it was a bad decision and I have definitely learned from it. I had to serve a detention and then always thought that Mr. Sass was going to hate me forever. • 59. Dwelling in Possibilities Analysis Essay Rhetorical Analysis Is our youth doomed? Mark Edmundson begs this question in his essay, "Dwelling in Possibilities." His essay explains how the lives of young people have changed drastically over the years. Edmundson, professor at the University of Virginia, says his students are constantly "going" and that they never stop; they never settle in fear of missing something great. In lieu of this, Edmundson says that they are, "victims of their own hunger for speed" (Edmundson2). He also adds that his students, and young people in general, use today's technology to be "everywhere at once" (watching a movie, instant messaging, talking on the phone, and glancing at a textbook) and are therefore, "not anywhere in particular" (Edmundson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But, again, that is debatable and an author can never go wrong by proposing a solution when writing to persuade. Besides omitting a solution, Edmundson does an excellent job persuading his readers, especially with the use of references. Most writers, when writing to persuade, include facts and statistics to support their viewpoint. Edmundson, however, refers to authors, and very famous ones at that. This is a very successful method because his whole argument has to do with the lack of culture, art, and writing, in today's youth. Referencing these authors really helps the reader to sense where he is coming from and helps them to sense his passion for literature. Some of the authors referenced include: Thoreau, Immanuel Kant, Gertrude Stein, Nietzche, Lord Byron, Wordsworth, and Emerson. One reference, in particular, serves as an excellent example of how Edmundson's references are successful in getting his point across. He compares youth to the contrasting Byron and Wordsworth, Byron to how his students are today, and Wordsworth to how it ought to be. He states that Byron "wished to never be bored," as does today's youth (Edmundson 11). Edmundson also mentions, "students now are Romantics– of a Byronic sort," and that, "he would have adored their world of fast travel, fast communication, and fast relationships" (Edmundson 11). However, just like today, the vast majority of the Roman urbanites lived in cramped, multi–story apartment buildings called insulae. Even so, rich and poor people did not live segregated ghettos; luxurious domi and shabby insulae were intermingled in the cities. At first, these buildings were made with timber, and mud brick; however, the concrete allowed the Roman tenement buildings to reach new heights, with some being seven stories ... • 65. Heidegger's Conception Of Meaning Heidegger "When we say sky, we are already thinking of the three along with it, but we give no thought to the simple oneness of the four." A person builds because he is searching for something or does not understand what it is. Therefore, in order to understand it a word or meaning is given. As a result, this word can mean anything or others might perceive it as such with their own will. The necessity to understand it lies with what we can create or is surrounding us. A dwelling is a dwelling because we say is a dwelling. The meaning of dwelling is given to a certain things, hence, it serves that purpose, but it can otherwise possess another. We seek words to make everything simple to acknowledge that something is there in the first place. The language and significance of things can go and new ones take their places, yet it would still possess the same nature as before if associated with its original idea. Relations are formed to create thoughts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Norberg–Schulz, emphasised that without the connection to man or person it becomes a misrepresentation. The connection towards what a person illustrates depends on the sources and ideas they are willing to possess and invoke. The idea can be invoked, but without the reason and meaning of the man to support it, it just becomes an idea or meaning. Like Heidegger said, to understand it needs to have a meaning. Yet, that meaning is empty and meaningless without the critical aspect of man, as Norberg–Schulz tries to tell. A dwelling is a dwelling because the person uses it to dwell thus it functions as such and the meaning of dwelling is supported. Anything created will eventually have a presence or be recognized, but only if the man become part of its creation. It either becomes a sense of expressive creation or keep the meaning or word as given. When this happens the many meanings become "Being" that Heidegger was trying to ... • 69. Characteristics And Restrictions Of Valued Activities... This study evaluated napping characteristics and restrictions in valued activities participation among community–dwelling older adults. In unadjusted models, we found an association between both intentional and unintentional napping and increased odds of restrictions in at least one valued activity, in comparison to rarely or never napping. While this association held after adjustment for demographic and health characteristics, there was no association between napping intention and restrictions in valued activities after further adjustment for depressive and anxiety symptoms when compared to rarely or never nappers. Among nappers, average nap duration and frequent napping were associated with restrictions in at least one valued activity, while napping intention was not. Moreover, when comparing individual activities among nappers, the strongest association was between napping characteristics (i.e. frequency, nap duration) and restrictions in going out for enjoyment followed by visiting with friends and family. Altogether, these results indicate an independent association between frequent, longer naps and restrictions in daytime functioning among community–dwelling older adults, especially among those who nap. Napping may be sign of daytime sleepiness which may lead to restrictions in valued activities. Our findings are similar to those of studies on excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) that have utilized self–reported napping as a marker for EDS. One community–based study ... • 71. Dwelling: A Short Story Dwelling about my own feelings led the direction of frustration and anger as I grew older, feeling for anybody's feelings or situations, almost non–existent; don't miss–understand, I had marvelous times and a caring person to an extent. Growing slowly into a person whose true character lived in a cage, confined to prison and when released, it was madness, not intending to only injure, I wanted to see blood, tasting this flavor in my mouth before a confrontation. Choosing who I wanted to associate with and if others left me alone there was no problem, although, at the end of the sixth grade the nestling soul fell asleep. There was a boy in school that began tormenting me every day walking home; undesirable name calling. Eventually deciding to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Pros And Cons Of Burglary is fenced in, any other structure inside the fence is considered an extension of the dwelling, even if those buildings are not used as living quarters. If there is, for example, a farmhouse, a barn, and a tool shed that all sit within one large fence, the barn and the tool shed are considered part of the dwelling even though they are not used as living quarters and, if a defendant breaks and enters into the barn or the tool shed with the intent of committing a felony, he can be convicted of burglary. Also please note that if a defendant enters a dwelling without breaking, but, once inside, breaks into a closed part of the dwelling, he can be convicted of burglary. In such cases, one party's breaking and entering into the other party's living space at night with the intent of committing a felony will constitute burglary. Many jurisdictions have also eliminated the element of "dwelling" from the burglary definition and consider burglary the entering onto any premises with the intent to commit a felony therein. As we have said, the breaking and entering must be done at night in order to qualify as burglary. However, the breaking and entering do not have to be done on the same night. That is to say, the defendant can create the opening in the dwelling on one night and then use that opening to gain entry on another night. Please remember, however, that, as we said before, there must be a causal relationship between the breaking and entering so that, even though the breaking and entering can occur on different nights, the breaking must be the means that the defendant uses to gain access to the dwelling. Many jurisdictions have also eliminated the element of "night" from the burglary definition and consider burglary the entering onto any premises at any time with the intent to commit a felony ... • 75. The New World : A Final Examination Of God And Man 's... The New World: a final examination of God and man's relationship The Bible consists of a wide array of stories and themes that has captured audiences' attention and interest across borders and time for a number of reasons. However, it is particularly interesting to compare the beginning and end of the Bible – Genesis and Revelation – in order to observe on what terms the dynamic relationship between man and God began and ended. It can be argued that one's understanding of this relationship between man and God is vital in one's understanding of the deeper meaning behind the stories within the Bible. Therefore, by comparing and contrasting analogous moments from the first verses of Genesis and the last verses of Revelation, one can see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This suggests that their bond can never be broken no matter how much pain they cause one another. Also, the suggestion that God – and associates – has entered this eternal partnership with man conveys the trust God had to have in man to remain faithful and obedient to his guidance in order to foster a healthy relationship. Moreover, Jesus continues this assertion of immortality when he says to John: "'do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever; and I have the keys of death and Hades'" (Rev 1.17). This continuation of God being the "beginning and end" emphasizes the importance of this eternal relationship because it is God that created man and God that will (hopefully) greet man once they return to the dust they were created from. Moreover, Coogan explains in the footnotes that "Hades, used here with its synonym Death, is the abode of the dead" and that "Jesus has the keys to release those confined within its gates" (Coogan 2156). This further shows the eternal nature of God – and his vessels – that is tied to mankind. In the beginning God gives life to man and in the end God is there to guide man to the afterlife. Therefore, the importance of examining the books of Genesis and Revelation together can be seen by comparing and contrasting the state of mankind and God's relationship in the first chapters of Genesis and the last chapters of Revelations – which shows ... Within these cities, urban culture and economies emerge, grow and branch out. From deindustrialization to the creation of urban culture and hip hop or the impact of immigrants on the country they choose to reside in, these are the factors that reflect globalization both in the United States and abroad as well as perpetuate it. As manufacturing intensified from World War II, so was the flock of U.S. citizens to the larger cities. The spike in industrialization meant more jobs in large cities where the factories were located. This was Keynesianism in full effect, more employment, more spending. What happened ...
