10. Constructing your assignment
Always include:
An introduction
Main body/discussion and
Conclusion
• Should be written in the 3rd person (formal style)
• Fully cited and referenced using the Harvard referencing system
11. The introduction
• This is designed to inform the reader of the content of the paper/write-up. It is used
to set the scene, almost like a road map
• Outline the public health principles and contemporary issue; and provide
background information to set the scene. This may include the demographic and
social characteristics of a population, group or community; provide a rationale for
the prioritization of the chosen population group and health need
• Finalise the introduction when you have completed the main discussion and
conclusion. It is at this point that you will know what you wish to sign post to the
reader
12. Main discussion
Treat the reader as non subject specialists; this will enable you to be clear about your
assignment direction.
• This assignment is assessing your critical understanding of the principles and
ideologies of Public Health and Health Promotion
• It is NOT assessing your knowledge of your chosen public health issue
• Needs to be underpinned with fully referenced theory
13. Main Discussion
Contemporary PH Issues:
https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/health-matters-public-health-issues
• Principles and ideologies of public health and HP:
• Public health practice is based on the principles of protection, prevention and the promotion of health. Also
vital are equity, fairness and inclusiveness, empowerment, effectiveness and evidence-based practice. Health
promotion principles include non-maleficence, multi-sectoral, holistic, beneficence, health maximisation,
efficiency, respect for autonomy, and justice

o Support narrative with relevant theories, models of health promotion and/or
relevant policies
o Conclude your critical discuss of each key principle with a reflection on the
implications for practice
o Use academic sources to support your arguments and reference all statements
of facts and statistics

14
15. Conclusion
• The conclusion summarises and brings the discussion/write-up together and draws
it to a close
• Provide an overall conclusion to your discussion recapping the key points of your
essay
• It should not contain any new information
• It should be fully referenced
16. General advice
You are being assessed on your knowledge of the principles of public health and health promotion;
therefore, do not place too much emphasis on your chosen topic.
Apply referenced models and theories to your discussion/critique.
Do not exceed the word limit. The word limit will exclude bibliographies, reference lists, diagrams
and tables, tables of contents, footnotes and appendices of data. However, it does include the
references citied in the assignment.
17. General advice cont…
Ensure your work is theoretically underpinned and referenced throughout. Ask yourself ‘where did
this information come from?’ If it is not your own opinion it must have a reference. If it is your own
opinion make this clear using a caveat such as ‘it could be argued that…’
Only put references into the bibliography if you have citied it in your assignment.
Write your assignment as an essay not a report. It should contain fully punctuated sentences and
paragraphs; do not use bullet points and lists. If you are struggling with this contact the Language
center https://unibradfordac.sharepoint.com/sites/language-centre-intranet
18. Word Count
• The University imposes penalties for work that exceeds a specified maximum permitted length. Work is
subject to a penalty deduction of marks equivalent to the percentage of additional words over the limit. For
example, where the maximum permitted length of an essay is 2400 words, a 3000 word essay (25% over the
limit) will be marked, and then have 25% of the mark deducted i.e. if the essay had a mark of 70% then 25% of
the mark would be calculated = 17.5% thus the adjusted new mark would be 52.5% to give the mark for
consideration by the Assessment Committee.
• There is no penalty for writing less than the word limit. However, it is unlikely that you will be able to meet
the assessment criteria in substantially fewer words than the limit allowed.

19. Reference list
• Only include the reference for those used in the assignment
• Should be in alphabetical order regardless of the source
• To be constructed according to the Harvard referencing guide.
• Do NOT use wikipedia, free dictionary etc as a referenced source.
