3. What is the EBU
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) was founded in 1950 and consists of 73 Broadcast Stations
in 56 European countries. It´s located in Geneva (Switzerland).
The EBU is planning the entire competition and broadcast it all over Europe since 1956.

4. Where does they broadcast the ESC?
The Show is also broadcasted outside the broadcasting area of the EBU
The Countries are:
Australia and New Zealand
Asian Countries (China, India, South Korea, Japan)
Mexico and other South American Countries
Canada and USA
5. History
The Eurovision Song Contest was called „Grand Prix d´ Eurovision de la Chanson“ from 1956 till 2001. In 2001 the EBU
decided to give this event a name which is easier to remember. It is a music competition which has been broadcasted on
TV since 1956. The first Song Contest was in Lugano in 1956 and the winner was Lys Assia from Switzerland with her song
„Refrain“.
In 2016 the ESC got the Karlsmedallie for European Media.
In 1969 four countries won the Song Contest, because they got exactly the same points:
Spain with Salome and her Song „Vivo cantando“
United Kingdom and Northern Ireland with Lulu and “ Boom Bang-a-Bang”
The Netherlands with Lenny Kuhr and the Song ”De troubadour”
France with Frida Boccara and her song “Un jour, un enfant”
6. History – Participating Countries
In the History of the ESC the participating countries aren't always the same. Countries like Portugal weren’t
in the competition in 1997, 2004 – 2007 and from 2011 till 2015. In 2016 Portugal didn´t find a singer.
Other countries which were not always part of the contest:
Andorra from 2004 – 2009 and since 2010 Andorra had completely withdrawn from the competition
Bosnia and Herzegovina returned 2016 to the competition but the TV-Company BHRT doesn't have
enough money for the 2017 Contest
Slovakia has withdrawn from the Contest since 2013 because they had not enough money.

7. History – The most successful
Countries
The most successful country is Ireland. They won 7 times: In 1970,1980,1987,1992,1993,1994 and in
1996. Second Place is Sweden with 6 winners, and the third Place is France, Luxembourg and the
United Kingdom with 5 winners.
Germany had two winners. Nicole in 1982 and Lena in 2010.
8. Hosting
It’s a tradition that the winner country hosts the Contest in the following year. So this year the Ukraine
hosts the Contest. Mostly the winner from the last year also hosts the green room, where all the
countries and singers are sitting and waiting for their points. The singers get also interviewed there.
9. National Voting's
The National Voting's are mostly in January or February. Most countries decided to have a national
competition where the people are allowed to vote and find their perfect artist for their country.
The most famous national voting is the voting from Sweden, it’s the Melodifestivalen. Here in Germany
it’s the “Unser Song” Contest.

February and the Winner was Levina with her
Song “Perfect Life”
10. This Year´s Eurovision
The Eurovision Song Contest is in Kiew, Ukraine, because Jamala won the Contest last Year with her
Song “1944”.
The Contest will be on:
Semi-Final 1: 09.05.2017
Semi-Final 2: 11.05.2017
Grand Final: 13.05.2017
Russia announced their withdrawal on 13 April 2017, after
their singer, Yulia Samoylova, was banned from entering
Ukraine after the government said she had illegally
travelled directly to Crimea.

11. Eurovision‘s Spin-Off
The Eurovision Song Contest had a few Spin-Offs.
Since 2003 the Eurovision has had a little brother the “Junior Eurovision Song Contest”
Eurovision Young Musicians (since 1982) and Young Dancers (since 1985)
