2. House style
House style is a set of rules containing graphic elements
such as, layout, colours, fonts, camera shots and so on. I
will analyse how house style is created using different
media language. I will look at different brit pop band
websites, graphics, audio-visual elements and other
promotional products. :
3. Scouting for Girls House Style
Use of font types in branding: The logo of the band is
designed using a geometric sans serif font type. This is
consistent across all the different promotional products
such as the website, gig posters, album releases,
posters, album covers, etc... The use of the clean, crisp
lines can read on screen and the geometric aspect
creates cleanliness. The sizing of the text is perfect to
read and grabs attention.dd text
The three band members are always
in the same order connoting the
togetherness and professionalism of
the band.
As for the colour scheme, Scouting for
Girls keep their colours very pastel and
muted with lots of earthy tones and a
dominant gritty cream colour running
through different promotional products.
This is consistent throughout their
website, digital posters and record
covers.
As for camera shots, the website
is landscape, shot in a medium
longshot. The music video
consists of many longshots and
high/birds eye view angles.
Symbolic codes in Scouting
for Girls is the order of the
band members. The lead
singer (Roy Stride) is always
in the middle, connoting he is
the lead in the band.
Form conventions: fans and
readers of the website expect
the band to have their name
obvious and clear, which is
done successfully.
4. Supergrass’ House Style
Colour scheme: this band
uses black and white in their
website and logo however
for their audio-visual aspects
(music videos) lots of bright
colours are used to entice
the audience.
Use of font: Supergrass use a hippie, psychedelic, sans serif
font type throughout their website, logo and merchandise.
This font choice exhibits the bands carefree, happy attitude
to life and adds excitement for the reader when looking at
the font. It stands out and is easy to read while being
exciting to look at.
Supergrass’ music video to “feel
alright” has many camera angles,
shots and transitions. In these two
clips from the music video they are
in a double bed on the beach and
riding bikes too small for them. This
mise-en scene suggests that the
video is weird and childish however
different and fun, creating
enjoyment for the audience. The
constant zooming in and out and
fast pans creates excitement,
engaging the audience to keep up.
As for media codes, Supergrass’ forms of promotional
products are all very fun and different while their music
video “be alright” is slightly childish. These aspects mixed
create joy and elevation, drawing the audience into the
band, hopefully creating new fans.
Symbolic codes for Supergrass'
photos and music videos is the
order of the band members. Gaz
Coombs is always in the middle,
to show he is the lead
singer. text
Their band pictures are fun and reckless.
Gaz Coombs is holding a bottle of alcohol
or smoking, connoting they have fun and
party.
5. Oasis' House Style
text
FontiType: Oasis' primary font for their logo is
Sans Serif Helvetica Black Oblique. Their logo
features within music videos, merchandise and
album covers making the band easily
recognisable with one font. Within other
promotional products, a similar thick blocky
sans serif is used however less italicized. This
font is easy to read and stands out giving the
text a bold, important feel.
As for merchandise, Oasis’
house style continues. Their
logo is printed on t-shirts,
hoodies, water bottles and
other items. The use of
adding a logo publicises the
band even more making it
highly recognisable.
Colour scheme: the shades black and
white are prominent throughout Oasis’
marketing. This simple scheme makes
the logo easy to recreate while being
cheaper to print. For the website and
some album covers, dark colours are
used to match the black and white.
oasis’ music video to
“don’t look back in anger”
has many different camera
shots, angles and
transitions. Below, are
three screenshots from
their music video. The
band members change
places with a fade
transition, making the
video exciting to watch.
There are also many static
shots and pans.
Oasis add their logo
prominently to most of their
album covers. Their logo is
strong enough to work
across all types of medium
(printed and digital) which
conveys a strong and
consistent identity.
6. Conclusion
To conclude, many bands and artists use a coherent house
style throughout their branding. The do this by using
similar fonts, colours and images. I will do the same by
adding my logo to my website and music video. I will use a
colour scheme throughout my promotional products, to tie
everything together while sdding my logo to my website.
