This presentation is a virtual photo tour of the Harris Learning Library (HLL) serving Nipissing University, Canadore College, and the community.
The tour provides information about the beautiful and varied Library spaces, diverse resources, and the services available.
2. Land
Acknowledgement
The shared Nipissing University and
Canadore College campus sits on
the territory of Nipissing First Nation,
the territory of the Anishnabek, within
lands protected by the Robinson
Huron Treaty of 1850.
We are grateful to be able to live and
learn on these lands with all our
relations.
The “Glacial Erratic” art piece created by Dr. Dennis Geden located
outside the Library.
3. Welcome to Your
Library
The Harris Learning Library (HLL)
officially opened on Saturday, June
25th, 2011.
After years of fund-raising and
planning, the Library that supports
Nipissing University and Canadore
College opened its doors to
students, staff and faculty, as well
as the general public.
A Smudging ceremony, a sharing
circle and a visit by various
dignitaries and community guests
opened the space in a good way.
4. The Atrium
The front entrance opens to
the Library's bright, beautiful
Atrium.
This space is filled with
natural light from the large
windows and skylights three floors
up.
The Donor Tree fills the center of
the Atrium as an acknowledgment
to the individuals and
organizations that donated to the
build project.
5. Main Floor
The main floor houses the Service
Desk, where visitors can borrow
materials including books,
DVDs, laptops, anatomical body
parts, and faculty resources.
Patrons will receive guidance
from friendly and
knowledgeable Library staff for all
their library and research
questions.
Elevators are available for access
to all three floors.
6. Student Lounge
A variety of seating areas encourage
collaborative or independent
activities, work, or a relaxing break.
The Popular Collection of books and
a selection of current magazines
and journals are located here
Visitors are welcome to bring their
food and drinks when visiting the
Library
7. Learning Commons
The Learning Commons houses open
access computers that run either Windows or
Mac operating systems.
Visitors can print and photocopy in black
and white, as well as colour, for a small fee.
The lower level of the main floor is
accessible by stairs or a ramp.
Free Wi-Fi access is also available
throughout the Library.
8. Archives and Compact Shelving
The Archival Collections is made up of institutional records from Canadore College
and Nipissing University, as well as select local materials. The Archive is accessible
by appointment only.
The Compact Shelving area contains back issues of journals, magazines,
newspapers, microfilm, viewing stations and microfilm/fiche readers. A scanner is also
available in this space.
9. Heading Up to the Second Floor
Visitors can access the second floor by taking the elevator, the central
staircase or walking up the Reading Terrace. This space is a favourite
space to sit and study in booth-style seating while looking outside.
Art pieces are located throughout HLL. This work titled The Spirit of
Russell Inkpen Above Burin, by John Hartman, is hung above the central
staircase.
10. Second Floor
The second floor
includes diverse
seating spaces,
collaborative or
individual work areas,
whiteboards for
studying or note-
taking activities, and
half of the Library’s
physical collection.
11. Group Study Areas
The central section of the second floor holds
several Group Study tables that look out on a
lawn area with trees in the background.
A seating area of several couches are also
available for individual work or reading space
or for group gatherings.
Two classrooms are located on the
second floor. Library staff members regularly
provide information literacy sessions for
Nipissing and Canadore classes, as well as
visiting community groups.
12. The Thomson Reading Room
• An immense space with floor to ceiling
windows, a wooden ceiling, and
several large tables, this room creates
a unique reading, study or group work
area.
• Incredible art pieces, such
as The Spirit of Nanabush, and
the Flomen prints, bring this awe-
inspiring room to life.
13. The Third Floor
The third floor provides incredible
views of the Library, the College
Drive campus and the
escarpment
Unique spaces such as the
Treaty Learning Centre, Group
Study and Adaptive Technology
Rooms, and the Silent Zone are
found on this level
The skylights and windows on
this floor once again fill the space
with natural light
Individual and small seating spots
are also available on this floor
14. The Collections
The diverse Collections at HLL
range from subject-specific
materials that support academic
endeavors, to items that may
provide a bit of down time and fun
The collections include both fiction
and non-fiction books, audiobooks,
DVD's, boardgames, musical
instruments, posters, maps,
STEAM teaching/learning
materials and so much more!
15. The Silent Zone
The Silent Zone is a space dedicated to silent, individual study and reading.
This space is a closed area so noise disruptions are minimalized from the other
collaborative spaces within the building. Visitors to this area are asked to turn
off all sound to devices and to step outside when speaking to respect others’
interest in maintaining a Silent Zone.
16. Group Study and
Adaptive Technology
Rooms
Group Study rooms provide
spaces for small groups to
work together in a closed
workspace.
The Adaptive Technology
rooms are available to visitors
who have credentials to use
the spaces.
Lake Nipissing is visible on
clear days from the third-floor
rooms.
