Imperialism In The 21st Century
Now we've got it covered–now we can ensure it's understood: Trump is not an outsider, first of all.
He's an elitist among elitists, and he's being pushed by the elite to win this election. Why, now?
Divide et impera! The more stratified we are by imaginary lines (white/black–male/female–
straight/gay–cis/trans–rich/poor–binary/non–binary), the less united we are in empathy and
objective conscience. The elite are mostly white, mostly male, mostly straight, mostly cisgender, and
guaranteed to be rich as rich can be. If the other 'categories' of human are repressed and removed,
they can have all the free reign they want! Last year we had two terrors in two cities: Paris and San
Bernardino. These terrorist attacks, fueled by Western imperialism, ... Show more content on

France's Marine Le Pen of the neo–Nazi National Front is gaining massive traction. UKIP, the
British party that serves as a toned–down front for the Holocaust–denying British National Party, is
polling extremely well. Over here, we have Trump. Trump, the reality star. Trump, the obnoxious
billionaire. Trump, the audacious racist who wants to expand the USA PATRIOT Act and grant even
more power to the NSA. Trump, the ultimate neo–fascist. What happened to the Jews and Roma in
Germany, what happened to the Armenians and Assyrians in the Ottoman Empire, what's happening
now to the Yezidis and Shi'a Muslims in ISIS–controlled territory and to the Palestinians in their
occupied land–it can and will happen here. If Trump (the definite psychopath) wins (along with his
European counterparts), propelled by the alt–right (his paramoralistic schizoidal minions), he's
guaranteed to cause a Hell on Earth so great that it will rival the greatest tragedies of all the past.
The eschaton or endgame plan of the global elite is a Fourth Reich that will conquer the globe in
World War III. The very survival of our species is at terrible risk. If we do not shake ourselves from
our slumber and awaken to love, peace, truth, and empathy very soon, we shall all perish in the
material flames to

Homosexuals should be allowed to serve openly in all branches of the US Military Gays should be
allowed to openly serve in all areas and levels of the U.S. military because logic and the tide of
political correctness dictate that such should be the case.
The American armed forces had, since the early revolutionary war, held sodomy (then generally
defined as the conduct of performing anal or oral sexual act) as grounds for discharge. It was in
1950, when the Uniform form Code of Military Justice prohibiting homosexual and heterosexual
anal and oral sex was passed, that the gay ban began. Under President Ronald Reagan, the gay ban
was more stringently enforced. In the 1990s, amidst vicious opposition to repeal the ban, President

However, homosexual 's open service should no longer be an issue of "friction" because the
American society is increasingly moving towards open acceptance of gay developments that even
include gay marriages and open military service. The fears of the deterioration of heterosexual
military members in the event of open service of gays in all military branches are no longer
supported by studies on civilian and enlisted service personnel 's attitude. No less than Service
members Legal Defense Network (SLDN) 's Director of Law and Policy Sharra Greer have
observed that in the present, "Heterosexual service members serve alongside lesbian and gay
colleagues every day and they are increasingly comfortable doing so" (New Poll).
There is, in fact, a considerable presence of gay and lesbian Americans serving in the armed forces.
Despite the ban on open gay service, the different opinion survey results reflect how both the
American public and the enlisted personnel themselves either find the matter of sexual orientation
irrelevant to military performance, or recognize the contributions of the enlisted gay members to the
country 's military.
An estimate places the number of gay and lesbian Americans serving in the armed forces at 65,000
(New Poll). Since the gay ban began to be initiated in 1943, applicants had been pre–screened; for
those who avoided or survived the pre–screening, a considerable number of homosexual

Rhetorical Analysis Of Matthew Shepard
On April 11th, 1999, a trial was conducted against the murderer of Matthew Shepard. The main
speaker was his father, Dennis Shepard, a 70 year old male who is the father of two in the upper
middle class of Wyoming. He went to the University of Wyoming and is currently working as an
Industry Safety Engineer. However, he is also in a lot of grief and anger due to the murder of his 21
year old son Matthew. This was a trial against Mr. McKinney and Mr. Henderson for beating his son
to death; where he wanted to "prove that this was a hate crime and not just a robbery gone bad"
(Shepard). Mr. Shepard is giving a testimony describing Matthew's character and why no one
deserves such unjust discrimination that Matthew had received. He speaks to the ... Show more

died at 12:53 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 1998" (Shepard). This was not just a fact, but a very
devastating one, to know the exact time your child has pass is unimaginable and simply just cruel.
Another example of logos is "You made the world realize that a person's lifestyle is not a reason for
discrimination... This is not the 1920s, 30s, and 40 of Nazi Germany" (Shepard). This is an example
of analogy, as he compares the discrimination upon his son to the hatred against the Jews by the

Culture of Fear Essay
Culture of Fear
Culture of Fear, by Frank Furedi, is a book that looks at how widespread fear impacts Western
cultures like the United States and Great Britain. Frank Furedi believed that society tends to panic
too much, as we actually enjoy "an unprecedented level of safety." I admit that Frank Furedi's novel
is based upon a novel concept, and an interesting one at that. However, Frank Furedi comes off to
me as little more than a fear monger and an intellectual elitist. His book, to me, seems redundant
more often than not. But sometimes part of college is learning about points of view that you may not
agree with, so I tried to maintain that perspective when I read the book.
Our assignment for class was to read the book, and every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I did not do a good job of putting my logs into a context for a broad audience outside of my class.
Nor was I required to do so. We were explicitly instructed to not write a summary, but rather our
thoughts on the book. My suggestion for those who would like the book in context: read the book.
Part of me wishes that I held back a little in my writing, as I fear that my thoughts betray me in an
unfavorable light. But these are all unedited, one shot deals here. Oh, and on the off chance that
Frank Furedi himself reads this, then... um... loved the book. And don't read my position piece
project.
Preface and Introduction
Upon reading the first part of COF, it made me realize what a widespread epidemic widespread
panic can be. We fear so much in this country, and not just safety issues. We fear offending people
by being too PC, we fear litigation, and that perpetuates warning labels which foster even more fear.
Fear is what gets politicians elected, and fear can even be a hobby to adrenaline junkies.
Fear to me is a fascinating emotion. People take it as a negative, but to me it's there for basic
survival. Fear can also make people bond. After 9/11, the whole country was in fear. Yet, for the first
time I can remember, the whole country was a united one.

Henry Gerber Gay Rights Essay
"Sex was something mysterious which happened to married couples and Homosexuality was never
mentioned; my mother told me my father did not believe it existed at all 'until he joined the army'.
As a child, I was warned about talking to 'strange men', without any real idea what this meant. I was
left to find out for myself what it was all about." Mike Newman, who was a child during the 1950s
America recalls how homosexuality was perceived during the post–World War II era (F). This
sexual oppression was not only in Newman's household, but in almost everyone's. While the civil
rights movement began in the mid–1950s and ended late 1960s, the LGBT community started to
come out of the closet slowly. The gay rights movement stemmed from the civil rights movement ...

On October 27, 1913, Gerber travelled overseas and arrived at New York and later travelled west to
Chicago (H). With the United States entering World War 1, Gerber enlisted in the US Army. From
1920 to 1923, Gerber worked with the Allied Army of Occupation positioned in Germany (K).
During his time there, he travelled to Berlin, a place where the gay community was massively
supported. He later wrote, "I had always bitterly felt the injustice with which my own American
society accused the homosexual of 'immoral acts.' What could be done about it, I thought. Unlike
Germany, where the homosexual was partially organized and where sex legislation was uniform for
the whole country, the United States was in a condition of chaos and misunderstanding concerning
its sex laws, and no one was trying to unravel the tangle and bring relief to the abused." Gerber
founded the Society of Human Rights, inspired by the work of a German Doctor Magnus Hirschfeld
and his work with the Scientific–Humanitarian Committee, on December 10 of 1924 in Chicago.
The goal of the society was "to promote and protect the interests of people who by reasons of mental

Same-Sex Marriage in Modern Society
Same–Sex Marriage in Modern Society
Many same–sex couples want to be granted the right to legally marry. The reason is simple: They
are in love with each other. They want to honor their relationship in the greatest way society has to
offer, by making a public commitment stand together in good times and bad life brings. While they
receive some state–level protections, they do not receive most of the Federal emotional and
economic benefits and protections of marriage. They are denied their right to equal protection, both
under the US Constitution and some state constitutions. The paper will point out that supporting gay
marriage by means of legal recognition is the most appropriate form of recognition of the same–sex
partnerships, because it eliminates discrimination promoted by the federal and some states' level.
Referring to state court decisions of 2009 and 2012 and the well–known 2003 Lawrence vs. Texas
decision of the Supreme Court, the paper will show that, currently very mixed pictures regarding the
legality of the same–sex marriage on the Federal and (some) states' level urgently requires a solution
by means of a nationwide legal recognition of the phenomenon. In its final parts, the paper will
introduce opposing arguments and reasons on how to encounter them.
I would recommend the policy of legal recognition of gay marriages as the most appropriate form of
recognition of the same sex partnerships. Reason being, gay persons do not enjoy most of the federal

How would you feel if someone told you that you couldn't marry the love of your life simply
because society doesn't think that it is right? Can you imagine the devastation you would feel, being
told that you are an inferior specimen my society? This travesty is occurring in our country on a
daily basis. Same–sex marriage should be nationally legalized in the United States with a law or an
amendment because it is a step closer to equality for everyone. There are many obstacles in the way
of the national legalization of same–sex marriage. The most prevalent of these are the government's
current laws on the subject. Some of the laws that the government has 'protecting marriage' are
nothing short of barbaric. Another obstacle to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The law this state recently passed is Proposition 8, also known as the California Marriage Protection
Act. In truth it isn't just a law. Proposition 8 was recently passed by Californian legislature as a new
amendment to their state constitution. This amendment forbids any same–sex marriage throughout
the state of California. This California bill garnered a lot of support from many different sources.
Much of the support that was behind this bill was religious in nature, especially by the Mormon
group. However, not all of the support behind this bill was religious. There was also a number of
political supporters, most notably Sen. John McCain. However, in his statement, he never actually
said that he personally was against same–sex marriage. He only said that he supported Proposition 8
because it seemed like the majority of the constituency of California supported it. Bills and
amendments like these have a significant effect on an average homosexual's state of mind, as shown
by a study:
The odds of mood disorders at wave 2 was 1.67 times the odds at wave 1 among LGB respondents
in states with amendments whereas the odds at wave 2 was not significantly different than the odds
at wave 1 among LGB respondents in states without amendments (Hatzenbeuhler, et al. 454).
When someone thinks about this, it begins to make a lot of sense and isn't a very surprising statistic.

The Right to Say I Do Essay
From the beginning of time, the human race has created a family circle to continue to exist. While
there are many points of view, as to why people oppose gay marriage, it all comes down to the fact
they think homosexuality is morally wrong. This report will cover the laws dealing with gay
marriage, the religious views, and the debate concerning children. In addition, this report will give
an explanation into how a classical theory would resolve the issues surrounding the subject of gay
marriage. Dating back to its Puritan founders, the United States has an extensive history of sexual
ideology. They put into place a narrow outline of ethical and sexual behaviors and principles. This
outline prescribed the proper manner in which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gay couples have been seeking officially permitted marriages since the early 1970's and not a word
was uttered until legislative items were put on government agendas. According to the website
(Lifetips.com., 2011), the first legally documented same–sex union was in Denmark in 1989 and the
first legal gay marriage was not until 2001, in the Netherlands. In view of that fact, several countries
have approved laws prohibiting the recognition of foreign gay marriages. The funds of the religious
right overshadow the funds of the lesbian and gay movement due to many organizations having
working budgets estimated to be in the hundreds of millions. With radio, television, film, and print
media outlets and vast groups of member churches, they can simply release political
communications or ask for the support of the people who go to those churches. In addition, the
religious right has an influential group of very wealthy and politically formidable contributors who
have executive sway inside the Republican Party (Fetner, 2008).
When President Clinton started to exercise his executive freedom to repeal the military's ban on
homosexuals, the religious right was ready to rally their congressional buddies to object to the
president's idea and in the end, resulted in maintaining the ban via the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't
Pursue" negotiation. This extensive depth and power eclipses the funds, contacts, and the foundation
of the lesbian and gay movement. Even so, this

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, also known as HIV, was discovered by Dr. Robert Gallo and
Dr. Luc Montagnier. HIV had its first known case in a human in the year 1959. Though, its first
known case in the United States was in 1981 when the Center for Disease Control and Prevention,
known as the CDC, reported five homosexual men in Los Angeles, California with Pneumocystis
Carinii Pneumonia, a rare form of pneumonia. These findings were published in CDC 'S Morbidity
and Mortality Weekly Report, or MMWR, which is read by physicians around the world. Soon after,
The New York Times reported that 41 homosexual men had been diagnosed with a rare cancer

There was no evidence that the patients had gotten AIDS through homosexual contact or drug use
where the drug is injected into the vein. Though, there was proof that all of these patients had
received Factor VIII concentrates which is a blood transfusion made by combining blood from
hundreds of blood donors. The CDC began to receive reports of AIDS amongst a small group of
Haitian migrants. AIDS had eventually become a disease of the "Four– H club"; the four H 's
meaning homosexuals heroin addicts, hemophiliacs and Haitians. Being included in the Four– H
club caused controversy. Haitian Americans complained about stigmatization, officials accused the
CDC of racism and Haiti began to decrease in tourism. Also, many Haitian immigrants lost their
jobs and were evicted from their homes. The fact that certain viruses can pass between species has
been known for a long time. The process of a viral transmission between animals and species is
known as zoonosis. People soon began to create theories on how AIDS was developed and spread ;
the "hunter" theory, also called the natural transfer theory, was one of them. This theory is the most
simple and reasonable explanation of the AIDS cross–species transmission. In this theory, the virus
was transmitted into humans from chimpanzees when a hunter would kill and eat them or the blood
of the chimpanzee getting into cuts, wounds or bites of the hunter. This exposure to the blood or

Character analysis of Territory by David Leavitt
"Territory" by David Leavitt is a short, yet complexly intimate tail of a mother's futile attempts to

story opens with twenty–three year old Neil visiting his mother, Mrs. Campbell, at his childhood
home. As they prepare for the first arrival of Neil's lover, Wayne, the anticipation triggers anxieties
both Neil, causing him to have painful flashbacks of the past. As these images reveal, Neil has lived
with feelings of shame, embarrassment and guilt over his sexual identity, as well as an exposure to

Neil's initial move to New York City was based on the city's liberal and tolerant nature of diversity.
However, even living in what was considered one of the most progressive areas of the city, they
publicly found themselves ashamed of their identity and uncomfortable to freely express
themselves, falling victims once again to these feelings of internalized homophobia that did not
allow them to walk down the street holding hands. According to Sullivan (2008), same–sex
attraction has not always been considered a deviation. However, post–war societal reaction to
prohibition, gay bathhouses and other establishments were adverse and a new war on immorality
arose, which was supported by American individuals, religious and governmental institutions. This
outlook prevailed throughout the 1950's and led to blatant anti–gay attitudes. The persecution of the
gay life style brought on renewed shame and guilt for the homosexual community as gay men were
forced to cope with the stigmatization by "passing" as heterosexuals and thus become invisible. This
resulted in the development of their own discriminatory social construct, with a hierarchy where
males who were able to prove their masculinity through assimilation were held in the highest
regards, while those that did not were looked down upon by their own gay communities

Wyoming has changed the gay community. October 12, 1998, twenty–one year old Matthew
Shepard was brutally beaten and murdered by two young Laramie citizens because of Shepard's
sexual orientation. In The Laramie Project and The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later, the town of
Laramie consisted of many social problems, which led to individuals violently projecting their bias
towards homosexuals. These individuals otherized homosexuals because of the public attitude,
morals, education, class, religion, politics, and their leaders. These biases have led to social
problems nationwide, but outside of the town of Laramie, change has arisen for the better. Thanks to
Matthew Shepard, homosexual awareness has spread nationwide creating a homosexual movement.

Ironically, the word panic originates from the Greek god Pan, who was noted for causing terror. Gay
panic implies that causing terror in violence is due to forgivable bouts of misjudgment. The
defense's language suggests a lack of both premeditation and cognitive participation brought about
by the unexpected fright. Sociologists use panic to refer to irrational group behaviors, such as those
arising from riot mentality. This statute barrows language from social science for the purpose of
linking gay–bashing to an academically accepted explanation for seemingly illogical group
behavior. Defense attornies often argue that the victim's sexual advancement on the defendants who
are already extrememly insecure about their own heterosexual orientation gave their precarious
sanity just enough of a nudge to tip over and hence produce irrational violent behavior. The defense
also assumes that homosexuality is such a terror as to uproot even something so supposedly stable as
heterosexuality. If gay–bashing is a symptom of a mental "disease" then the defendents must be
suffering patients instead of knowing criminals. By pathologizing gay–bashing, the medical and
social jargon legitimizes it through institutional recognition.

Gender Dysphori A Controversial Mental Disorder
Gender Dysphoria
Katlynn Tolley
Gender Dysphoria is a controversial mental disorder that affects the medical, social, and personal
aspects of the lives of many people. There is no definite known cause that is agreed upon in the
medical field. Research is still underway to determine causes of Gender Dysphoria as well as
effective treatment options and ways to increase the quality of life for people diagnosed with it.
Gender Dysphoria, or GD, is a condition in which an individual feels like their biological sex does
not correspond with the gender they feel comfortable identifying as. To understand the disorder, you
must first understand the meaning of the words. Gender is "the state of being male or female"
(Merriam–Webster). Dysphoria is a synonym for dissatisfaction. Therefore, Gender Dysphoria
means the individual is dissatisfied, or uncomfortable, with being either a biological male or a
biological female. In the past, Gender Dysphoria used to be called "Gender Identity Disorder" (Web
MD). Another name is "Transvestic Fetishism" (Britannica).
Signs of Gender Dysphoria can become apparent in childhood. Younger children may dislike toys
and activities for children their age that line up with their biological sex. Children this young
typically do not understand gender, but this is an early sign that they are unaware of. They may also
choose friends of the gender they consciously or subconsciously wish to be. They may be more

In 1863, Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address defined the American government as an institution
"of the people, by the people, [and] for the people". Lincoln had an idealistic view of the
government as an instrument for societal change. He, as well as the founding fathers, intended for
the government to act in support of the people's will or the majority rule. This democratic definition
of the government has remained true throughout the course of American history. By placing all of its
power on its citizens, the government itself did not decide the course of history but rather followed
it. This follower mindset is seen through the government's positive interactions with marginalized

A 1963 NOCR or National Opinion Research Center survey found that 85% of whites endorsed the
view that "Negroes should have as good a chance to get any kind of job". This progressive opinion
contrasts the 1940 NOCR survey in which 55% of whites said that "white people should have the
first chance". The shift from believing that whites should always get "first pick" to equal opportunity
for all demonstrates the enormous liberation in white opinions on race from 1940 to 1960. Another
question on the 1963 NOCR survey found that 73% of whites believed that "Negroes should have
the right to use the same parks, restaurants, and hotels as white people". National white opinion in
1963, a year before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, was highly favorable of integration and equality
with blacks. These changing opinions are highly due to the the Civil Rights Movement led by
Martin Luther King Junior which implemented a number of strategies including using religion as an
instrument for social change as well as fighting for basic rights by making laws seem illogical.
MLK's campaign for a more equal world rang true in the ears of many Americans, helping the
general positive sentiment for black rights to rise. A year after the NOCR survey, President Johnson
signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This act, outlawed major forms of discrimination against racial,
ethnic, national and religious minorities as well as women. By passing the Civil Rights Act, the
government was facilitating the movement of black people to the center of American life. This act

Summary/Overview
Before further investigation it is important to keep in mind that the LGBT community usually faces
discrimination in terms of job opportunities, income, access to basic healthcare, legal recognition of
same sex partners etc. however, one of the more serious difficulties the LGBT community faces
would be exposure to violence and discrimination simply due to their identity and orientation. This
may occur due to one's state and judicial system or in terms of hate crimes encouraged by an anti–
LGBT community along with prejudicial ties in religion and culture
Often so prejudice against the LGBT community is caused by the stigmatization of homosexuality,
which had previously been labeled as a mental illness, or an ailment of one's spirit, as well as having
to be strongly correlated towards AIDs due to past events. Therefore the more traditional general
public sees people of the LGBT community, as well as their efforts to achieve their rights, as a threat

The Role Of Homophobia In Prisons
In many countries globally, homophobia still exists in great length, thus resulting in assault, murder
and imprisonment of homosexuals for circumstances that are uncontrollable. The gay panic defense
is a legal defense, usually against charges of assault or murder. A defendant using the defense claims
that they acted in a state of violent temporary insanity because of a psychiatric condition called
homosexual panic. Because of this 'gay panic' clause, assault or murder of gay, lesbian, bisexual or
transgender people is defended in 40 countries. However, there is no justification for the use of
panic defenses. Defendants who unjustly target the LGBT community, based on damaging
stereotypes and homophobia have utilized this tactic. A defendant's ... Show more content on

However, a growing number are criminalizing sex between women as they believe doing so
strengthens laws against men as the countries can assert the legislation is 'gender neutral' and
therefore not discriminatory. (independent.co.uk) Nonetheless, these laws are still discriminatory,
not based on gender but against the equality rights of homosexuals in general. Lack of rights is also
evident within prisons for the LGBT community. Transgender people in prisons are forced to live in
different conditions than other prisoners in order to insure their safety. Incarcerated transgender
people are often housed in facilities that don't correspond to their gender identity, have difficulty
getting access to hormones and are placed in solitary confinement for prolonged periods of time.
People in solitary confinement are especially vulnerable to abuse from prison staff, and spending 23

assault, murder, and torture are not something uncommon for LGBTQ people to experience. For
instance, in 2016, 27 transgender people reported to have been murdered, that is more than two
people murdered a month (Schmider). However, we can trace it back to much earlier than that.
Beginning in the 1950s, conversion and reparative therapy began. As stated in the book Hear Us Out
by Nancy Garden "... in addition to supposedly being morally evil, homosexuality was widely
believed to be an illness. To "cure" them, gays and lesbians were sometimes subjected to painful
electroshock treatments or to aversion therapy. ... You may have heard of the modern–day version of
'curing' homosexuality – 'reparative therapy,' which is practiced by

Cause of Homosexuality Essay
What exactly is a homosexual? It is a person sexually attracted to a person of their own sex. Why do
people become homosexuals? This is a question that has been asked ever since the first homosexual
person "came out of the closet." People do not choose to become homosexuals. There has never
been a proven theory of why people become homosexuals. There are three theories that try to
explain why people become homosexuals, they are: the Biological theory, Psychiatric theory, and
the Sociological theory.(Thio, 211) The Biological theory is broken down into three different parts.
The first one is the hormone theory which states that homosexual men have a low level of male sex

Homosexuality is a very controversial subject. Some people do not accept it as well as do others.
Things that affect a society are the 5 institutions: religion, family, education, politics, and economy.
Religion is one institution that has strong influence on homosexuality. Two religions used in this
research paper are Mormon and Christian. Mormons consider homosexuality very sinful. They
believe that one should love the sinner hate the sin.(www1) In the Bible, read by Christians, it
considers homosexual actions wrong.(Bender, 204) In the New Testament of the Bible, Paul says
that homosexuality is way for people to turn their backs away from God. It also says that this is
leading away from what is "natural".(IBID) Christian parents have said that child having a
homosexual relationship is a painful problem to face.(IBID, 199)
If a teen is having feelings that he might be gay and is trying to cope with those feelings, they see
that they will have to deal with the society's hostile attitudes about homosexuals. (Nardo, 65)
Parents often hope and pray that their child will grow up to be "normal". This does not always
happen and causes frustration in the family.(Bender, 199) If a

White Feminism Essay Examples
"White Feminism" "White feminism" is not inclusive because it discriminates against minority
groups. "White Feminism" is feminism that only represents white cisgender (people that identify
with the sex that was assigned to them at birth) women. This is a fairly new term I've seen that's
surfaced the internet. It's the mainstream third wave form of feminism that's been particularly
popular on social media in more recent years. Many white celebrities have endorsed this form of
feminism and have integrated into their public image. Such as Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham. The
first organized feminist movement recorded was Seneca Falls lead by Alice Walker. Seneca Falls
focused on abolishing slavery, and women's suffrage. However, its main concern ... Show more

Many writers and notable feminist write about how the women of Seneca falls were only focused on
white women's rights and didn't allow black women to advocate for them or join their movement.
Their focus now is on equality in the workplace and better pay raises for women. Which anyone can
agree is very powerful and uplifting, however their main focus are situations that only affect white
women and they don't acknowledge the struggles of women of color and also trans women. Both of
those groups have been helping white feminist get their message out for years.
An example of a time where white feminism was in full effect was back in 2015, an actress named
Patricia Arquette decided to make a speech after accepting an award at the Oscars. She's goes on to
talk about how people of color and gay people need to help and advocate for what she thinks is the
feminist movement. However, she failed to realize that both of those minority groups include
women and are the forefront of women advocacy and women's rights. This outrage over the half the
feminist movement and gave more momentum to the idea of leaving "white feminism" in the past
where it belongs. (Marcotte 2015) Its harder for people

Essay On Problems In America
It can be depressing thinking about all of the problems in the world. I can list a large number of
problems that need to be fixed, and there are certainly even more issues to which I am not privy. It is
difficult to rank problems by their importance and declare that solving world hunger is more
important than reversing the effects of global warming, or vice versa. That being said, I believe that
the world's most pressing problem is the inequality and discrimination rooted deep within the
foundation of our society. The United States dubs itself the land of the free, and this may be true.
However, free does not mean equal. If one is a straight, white, and male, the United States is a great
place to live. Lose one or more of those characteristics, though, and suddenly one is playing on the
"high difficulty" version of life as opposed to the "easy" version. In the past 200 years the United
States has certainly made progress. The slaves were freed, white women gained the right to vote,
and then all races and genders were given the right to vote. This does not mean that everyone

Black males and Latinos are more likely to be jailed and receive longer sentences in prison than

shot by police officers than white teenagers. This issue is not solely one of race, though.
Transgender women have a one in twelve chance of being murdered during their lifetime.
Transgender women of color are killed at even higher rates, where one in eight is murdered. How is

Essay on The Defense Mechanism
Defense mechanism, in psychoanalysis, any of a variety of unconscious personality reactions which
the ego uses to protect the conscious mind from threatening feelings and perceptions. Sigmund
Freud first used defense as a psychoanalytic term (1894), but he did not break the notion into
categories, viewing it as a singular phenomenon of repression. His daughter, Anna Freud, expanded
on his theories in the 1930s, distinguishing some of the major defense mechanisms recognized
today. Primary defense mechanisms include repression and denial, which serve to prevent
unacceptable ideas or impulses from entering the conscience. Secondary defense mechanisms–
generally appearing as an outgrowth of the primary defense mechanisms–include projection, ...

The defenses can also give us insight into our own mental processes––sometimes mental gymnastics
or contortions. All defenses involve distortions of reality; they are ways of feeling better by fooling
ourselves. If we realized these defenses in our lives, we might handle reality better. Almost all
adjustment books mention these defense mechanisms, even the writers who are arrogantly critical of
Freud. An excellent text about Sigmund and Anna Freud and the ego defenses is by Christopher
Monte (1980).
Repression: shoving thoughts and urges that are unacceptable or distressing into our unconscious.
This is what happens to the unacceptable urges of childhood––the ego represses them. Taboo ideas,
like incest, would probably never get into consciousness or, if they got there, they'd be quickly
repressed. Sometimes dreams or slips of the tongue or attempts at humor reveal our unconscious
motives. For example, if a teacher ridiculed you in class, you might dream he/she had a horrible auto
accident. Or, trying hard to say something nice to the teacher a few days later, you comment after
class, "each of your lectures seems better than the next." Or, if you were unfortunate enough to be
asked to introduce your former teacher at a symposium and said, "I'd like to prevent––huh––I mean
present Dr.___," some might guess the truth. All these speculations about repressed feelings are just
guesses.
Repression must be distinguished from

Homosexuality Portrayed in Literature: Threat To Yourself and Those Around You
The Victorian era and Elizabethan era had many homophobic attributes, just as today's society does.
Gothic writers of the Victorian Age played off of the fear and immorality of homosexuality and used
those feelings as a basis for their novels. Bram Stoker told a story about a vampire that challenged
the Victorian gender roles and managed to reverse them, making men faint like women, and making
women powerful like men, and called it Dracula. Mary Shelley created a a physical being out of a
man's suppressed homosexuality due to his Victorian male upbringing; a man named Frankenstein.
Robert Stevenson described what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People believe that by allowing homosexuals to marry that it will threaten "the sanctity of
marriage". Homosexual men are infamous for being promiscuous, at least that is the label that has
been placed on most if not all homosexual men, and for this reason sexually transmitted diseases
have become something expected of them. This must have been a belief in the Victorian era, since
syphilis was the disease that was feared and said to have come from sodomy. In this era, violence
from society also attacked homosexuality. Homosexuals were hung, or lynched. (Sadownick par. 5)
This history of homophobia shows that it grows in society from a person's upbringing. Things occur
in a person's life that cause them to act in certain ways and believe specific things. The public hatred
of gay men taught the generations that being gay was wrong, and that people that were gay needed
to be punished. Homophobia was strong in the days of the Gothic writers, and though it has
weakened, it still affects people in today's society. It even dates back to the Renaissance days, and is
presented by Dante Aligheri is his Inferno. "And for this reason doth the smallest round/ Seal with
its signet Sodom[...]". Sodom is a city known for crude sexual acts, which is where sodomy gets its
name from. Since the Inferno is a world created by Dante, he believes that sodomy is a sin that is
worse than suicide, and decides to put it just before the entrance

started to barrage them with insults. One man insulted Cece directly by saying, ""look at that boy

got away, CeCe was physically assaulted with a glass of alcohol and a fight quickly began. Cece
attempted to run away, but was quickly followed by the man who had insulted her earlier, Dean

scissors. Following that, the police arrived and Cece was arrested and later, since Dean had died,
charged with second–degree murder. After the situation was investigated, there was a subsequent
trial and Cece was forced to accept a plea deal that would give her 41 months in prison to avoid a

The Importance Of The LGBT Community
The LGBT+ Community: Staying Strong in the Face of the Upmost Adversity "In our work and in
our living, we must recognize that difference is a reason for celebration and growth, rather than a
reason for destruction." (11) These words were said by Audre Lorde, and LGBT+ rights activist.
Lorde along with so many others from all across the world have to face fellow humans who think
that the LGBT+ members don't belong in the world. While the LGBT+ Community has suffered
from much adversity, the movements by Brendon Fay and others inspirational activists have helped
the community to become more accepted by the world.
The LGBT+ is a group of individuals who define themselves as lesbian (L), gay (G), bisexual (B),
transgender (T), or any other sexual or gender orientation that isn't heterosexual or cisgender. There
are a wide variety of sexualities that vary from finding romantic or sexual interest in one gender
(heterosexual and homosexual) to all genders (pansexual) to no genders (asexual and aromantic). As
for gender, while most people believe that only two genders exist (male and female), there actually
is a third gender known as nonbinary. Nonbinary is used as an umbrella term for any person who
doesn't identify as male or female. Nonbinary individuals can identify as having no connection to
the main two genders, having a connection to both of the main genders, as well as a variety of other
combinations. The LGBT+ Community tries their best to ensure that its members feel

Discrimination Towards The Lgbt Community
Throughout the years, the LGBT community has put forth tremendous effort to gain rights and
recognition in the United States. Yet there have been numerous laws that have discriminated and
made them feel unequal. LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered. Many people
in the community have a hard time accepting who they truly are in terms of sexual orientation or
gender identity. Coming out is challenging enough on its own, and laws and regulations that
discriminate against those who only wish to live freely can make it hard for them to do so. Living in
the time period we do, we have seen many changes in the right direction as far as having equal
rights for all, but it has not always been this way. There have been many movements and actions the
LGBT community has taken over the years to get to where we are today. There have also been many
laws and regulations specifically targeted at same–sex and transgendered individuals, some of which
that still apply today. Discrimination towards the LGBT community is not something new. Although
today it may seem normal to see two men holding hands walking down the street, forty years ago it
was almost unheard of. This is why the Supreme Court case Baker vs. Nelson made headlines. In
1972, the Court ruled that a Minnesota same–sex couple had no constitutional right to marry. This
all started when two male University of Minnesota students went to fill out a marriage application
form. When the clerk denied the application

this technique – which is now called electroconvulsive therapy – an electric current would be passed

LGBTQ community is put in a hostile environment everyday. Society has gradually learned to

church–based and conservative groups with the Boy Scouts of America probably influenced the

creating a better community and leaders, still reject people who are LGBTQ which then creates a
more hostile environment. Despite the fact that the acceptance for LGBTQ peope is becoming
increasingly normalized, this community should not have to face these problems in the first place;
everyone should feel accepted by others and should not have to experience this type of

Furthermore, the discrimination of LGBTQ people is caused by people, afraid of others that are

Getting Away with Murder Aaron
Getting Away with Murder Aaron McKinney was recently convicted of second–degree murder for
his role in the fatal bludgeoning of Matthew Shepard on October 6th of last year. During the opening
statements of his trial, McKinney's attorneys argued that a homosexual advance from Shepard
brought back a traumatic childhood experience which triggered "five minutes of emotional rage and
chaos" (Cart "Rests" 1). The claim invoked, which was ultimately rejected by the judge presiding
over the case, is known as the "homosexual–panic" or "gay–panic" defense. According to the
Harvard Law Review, this defense, a manifestation of the temporary insanity plea, is "premised on

In 1996, Henry Adams, a psychologist at the University of Georgia, devised a way to see if gay
bashing was related to suppressed homosexual urges. He recruited a group of men between the ages
of 18 and 31, categorizing them as either homophobic or non–homophobic. They were then shown
explicit erotic videos depicting straight, gay and lesbian sex, during which penile circumference was
measured by a plethysmograph. As a result of the video depicting gay sex, eighty percent of the
homophobic participants showed "moderate to definite tumescense" as compared to thirty percent of
the non–homophobic subjects (Stryker 5). Professor Adams concluded that most homophobes
"demonstrate significant arousal to homosexual erotic stimuli," suggesting that homophobia is a
form of "latent homosexuality where persons are either unaware or deny their homosexual urges"
(Adams 441; "Antigay" 1). The homosexual panic defense is based on the theory that homophobic
men may actually have repressed homosexual urges. Homophobia is often indicative of self–
loathing homosexual feelings; many homophobes subconsciously use anti–gay attitudes as a
disguise for their own homosexuality. Dr. Patrick Suraci, the author of Male Sexual Armor, suggests
that a gay basher wrestling with homosexual impulses of his own, "instead of being able to accept
those homosexual feelings within himself, he wants to kill those feelings"

Why, a gay couple not be allowed to participate in the ultimate expression of love––a marriage?
However, the idea of gay marriage has not gained acceptance in this country. Americans, like all
human beings, are naturally resistant to change. Humans are especially resistant to change when it
has shoved down their throats, which is what many see it done by the liberal courts nowadays. As
we have seen with blacks ' quest for civil rights, change must come gradually over time; otherwise,
unrest and further division created. In addition, the history of gay marriage spans decades, even
centuries of undocumented ceremonies and commitments. Denmark became a trailblazing country,
leading the way for the concept of registering same–sex couples in what we know as a civil union.
"This pioneering country voted on a law to register domestic partnership of gay couples on May 26,
1989." (Bennett, 1996) The law went into force on October 1 1989.The initially challenge is an
ethical one. Gay couples want the same rights as heterosexual couples, and by classic reciprocity
principles, this is something all citizens can understand. ("The gay marriage," 2004) These striking
times mark history but also make changes in how the world viewed and operated by society. "What

The Importance Of Japanese Prejudice In Farewell To Manzanar
According to the novel Farewell to Manzanar, "I smiled and sat down, suddenly aware of what
being of Japanese ancestry was going to be like. I wouldn't be faced with physical attack, or with
overt shows of hatred. Rather, I would be seen as someone foreign, or as someone other than
American, or perhaps not be seen at all" (158). After the bombing at Pearl Harbor, the government
saw all Japanese–Americans as enemies even though most, if not all of them, had done nothing
wrong. They were taken from their homes and send to awful internment camps where they were
treated as prisoners. The Japanese–Americans stayed in the camps four years, just because of where
they come from. During this time Americans completely turned against the Japanese people living in
their country and bombarded the news with anti–Japanese propaganda which showed how much
racial discrimination there was, even back in the 1940s. While Farewell to Manzanar explores this
concept, there are many questions in which the reader is left with. First, the Japanese–American
Internment was fueled by more than war time panic, which reveals the question: what role did
prejudice play in the Japanese–American Relocation? Then, there is the question: what modern day
connections can you make with this time in American history? Lastly, this story leaves the reader
with the question: do you think something like this could happen today? Farewell to Manzanar gives
a glimpse of the lives of Japanese–Americans in the 1940s and

Mental Health And The Lgbt Community
Introduction There have been many studies on mental health in the LGBT community. With more
people being open about their sexual orientation, the LGBT community has become a bigger target
for those individuals who create difference between groups to justify discrimination of a particular
group. The discrimination towards the LGBT community has caused problems for individuals in the
community, mental health being among the biggest problem. Studies have shown that the
discrimination of LGBT individuals can affect mental health. Not only are there various laws that
deny same sex marriage but according to there are government benefits that favor the traditional
family over a non–traditional. Due to discrimination lesbians and bisexuals are more likely to be at
risk for mental disorders compared to heterosexuals (Cochran and Mays 2003). Mental health issues
are not only seen in the adult LGBT community but in the youth LGBT. Studies suggest that mental
health disparities can exist during adolescence (Mustanski et al. 2010). The purpose of this review is
to show that the LGBT community is at higher risk for mental health disorders and psychological
distress. This review will show that discrimination among the LGBT community is linked to the risk
of mental health disorders and psychological distress and also demonstrate that lesbian, gay, and
bisexual youth have high levels of emotional distress. This paper will investigate mental health and
discrimination focusing on

The Effects Of AIDS And The Media On The Gay Liberation...
The Effects of AIDS and the Media on the Gay Liberation Movement: The Constitution promises
liberty for all, regardless of one's sexual orientation. However, throughout courses of history in
America, homosexuals have lived in a conformist climate, and they have experienced various levels
of discrimination. Despite this, America also provided homosexuals with the power to fight their
oppressors, thus the Gay Liberation Movement. This movement was not one of linear pattern,
especially because of the effects of AIDS and the media. As a result of pre–existing discrimination
and the stereotyping of homosexuals, the media and the public stigmatized AIDS, which temporarily
halted the progress of the Gay Liberation Movement; however, after the devastating effects of the
AIDS epidemic, the movement advanced as the media shifted the discussion of AIDS and allowed
for homosexuals to fight for proper treatment, research, and rights. Due to a conformist society in
which homosexuals felt oppressed by conservative views, homosexuals were discriminated against
and ridiculed, causing interruptions in the movement and a difficulty advocating for their rights. Due
to homosexuals' lack of conformity to societal norms, many believed homosexuals were not normal
and needed to be "fixed". So, doctors and psychiatrists used electrical shock treatment; when
homosexuals protested this and disrupted the psychiatrist' parley, their defense was that unhappy

Gender reveal parties have become a way to celebrate the arrival of a new child for parents. Guests

Depending on the color inside the cake or balloon, the child's life is predetermined based on gender
normative stereotypes. These will dictate on his or her name, the activities that he or she is allowed
to partake in, and the opportunities available to the child. This socialization of gender expression has
led to a dominant culture or public of cisnormativity. Warner talks about publics not in general like

According to Jonathan Alexander's chapter " Transgender Rhetorics: Sex and Gender" he notes that
"acknowledging the presence of the transgendered is useful not only for understanding those who
are differently gendered or whose presentation ... falls outside our 'norms,' but also for helping us
interrogate the constructs of gender that we often take for granted as 'natural'" (Alexander, 2008, pg.
130). Ways that the cisgendered public attempts to normalize gender roles is through literature
where "male authors... depict a young woman as frightened and helpless, and the female authors...
poke fun of the muscle–bound idiocy of a "macho" man"( Alexander, p. 137). The idea as the female
being weak and terrified and the man as muscular moron help to reaffirm the cycle of "gender tied
narrations" that are tied to society's dominant public. This is important because society's
cisnormative narrative teaches that gender expressions have strict guidelines that are "innate" in us
at birth. These instincts dictate a lot about an individual; however, the recognition of transgender
individuals cause the cisgendered to think that "gender is not necessarily an essential and natural
given, but rather a sociocultural construct whose repeated performances–as masculinity and
femininity" (p. 131). The transgendered attempt to create a discourse to disrupt these social
categories and show that there is more to one's identity than what is socially constructed and self

Issues In Matched
A social issue problem in the book "Matched" and our society today is not having the freedom to
love whoever you want. In the society in the book "Matched", you are paired with someone at the
age of 16 and if you decide to have a romantic connection with someone else or you don't love
anyone, then you are sent into the Outer Provinces for 6 months to act like a villager and fight the
enemy. In our society, in more than 74 countries, LGBT relationships are illegal. "Many states
continue to criminalise same–sex sexual contact under the threat of imprisonment or even death".
(Fenton 2016,www.independent.co.uk). On the news, we still see same–sex people in countries that
allow LGBT relationships that are getting beat up, hurt and killed. "In many ... Show more content

"Nigeria, which already bans gay relationships, also recently outlawed same–sex relationships, gay
groups and shows of same–sex public affection" (www.bbc.com, Lucy Rodgers, 2014). "A total of
40 countries retain a "gay panic" clause which enables people to use as a defense for committing
crimes"(Fenton, 2016,www.independent.co.uk). Examples of ways to show the countries that don't
allow same sex–sex relationships include posters, signs, commercials, protests and support groups.
These examples of visuals could also be used in the society in the book "Matched" to show that
maybe the system is wrong and it would be better if everyone could choose who they want to be
with. "How can we appreciate anything fully when overwhelmed with so much?". "It is one thing to
make a choice and it is another thing to never have the chance" (Matched,

Gay Fathers And Their Children
DANIEL WINUNWE RIVERS. Radical Relations: Lesbian Mothers, Gay Fathers, and Their
Children in the United States since World War II. (Gender and American Culture.) Chapel Hill:
University of North Carolina Press, 2013. Pp. xii, 296. $32.50.
Recent representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) families in mainstream
media, exemplified by the long–running sitcom Modern Family, and the 2015 United States
Supreme Court's ruling in favor of same–sex marriage, may lead some to believe LGBT families are
a recent phenomenon. Daniel Winunwe Rivers' Radical Relations: Lesbian Mothers, Gay Fathers,
and Their Children in the United States since World War II brilliantly uncovers the previously untold
history of same–sex families. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Radical Relations prominently explores the history of lesbian mothers. Lesbian mother groups
fought not only against heteronormative families, but also for women's reproductive rights. Rivers
underscores the advocacy of groups like the Lesbian Mother Union in favor of legal abortions, sex
workers' rights and health care for all women, and against forced sterilization of women of color.
The author innovatively presents this advocacy work as an unrecognized part of the 1960's sexual
revolution. It would be interesting to analyze the reverse, that is, the impact the "free to love"
revolution had on the general population's perception of the LGBT community. Lesbian mother
groups also fundraised money for custody cases. Women who left their heterosexual marriage faced
the possibility of custody loss, poverty, and employment discrimination. The author explores the
magnified struggles of Black gay women but fails to do so with Black gay men.
Rivers credits the gay father groups, which were politically centered, for 1990's gay family
respectability. The narrative of gay father communities lacks the intense anguish present on the
chapters about lesbian mothers; it is more factual and impersonal. This shortcoming can probably be
explained by River's upbringing in lesbian community, and, therefore, less extensive contact with
the male gay community. The author describes the

Essay about The Term “Marriage” Should Have No Boundaries
The topic of gay marriage is an issue that our nation is undecided upon. While several states
including the state of Vermont have passed laws allowing homosexual couples to marry, most of the
U.S. is against these rights and consider them immoral. Many believe that gay and lesbians deserve
no rights at all and should never be allowed to marry. On the other hand, others believe that these
individuals deserve all rights just as everyone else and should have the same privileges as
heterosexual couples do. This essay will attempt to discuss the laws surrounding gay marriage, the
religious views, and the debate concerning children in homosexual homes. This report will attempt
to explain how a classical theory would resolve the issues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Currently the states of Delaware, Hawaii, and Illinois also allow civil unions. It was not until 2004
that a state passed laws allowing an actual same–sex marriage and that state was Massachusetts.
Other states that have agreed to perform same–sex marriages are Connecticut, Vermont, Iowa, New
Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia
(NCSL, 2011). The Defense of Marriage Act While many believe they are receptive to new ideas,
the idea of marriage between homosexuals is an unwelcome thought to most. Most believe that
marriage is purely a heterosexual right and that this right cannot be afforded to those with immoral
thoughts or behaviors. While the state of New York allows gay marriages, it cannot afford the rights
of heterosexual couples to the gay couples. This in part is due to the 1996 federal law entitled The
Defense of Marriage Act (Strasser, 1999, pg. 187). While employers in New York can offer health
care benefits to the partner of gay employees, the employee must claim this expense as taxable
earnings unlike heterosexual people (Zremski, 2011). Furthermore, if a gay person's chosen partner
is considered an immigrant, it is no guarantee that the partner will be able to remain in the U.S.
lawfully. Additionally, if the partner of a gay married couple dies, the remaining partner has no
entitlement to Social Security survivor benefits and will more than likely be expected to pay a large
estate tax

Imperialism In The 21St Century

  • 1. Imperialism In The 21st Century Now we've got it covered–now we can ensure it's understood: Trump is not an outsider, first of all. He's an elitist among elitists, and he's being pushed by the elite to win this election. Why, now? Divide et impera! The more stratified we are by imaginary lines (white/black–male/female– straight/gay–cis/trans–rich/poor–binary/non–binary), the less united we are in empathy and objective conscience. The elite are mostly white, mostly male, mostly straight, mostly cisgender, and guaranteed to be rich as rich can be. If the other 'categories' of human are repressed and removed, they can have all the free reign they want! Last year we had two terrors in two cities: Paris and San Bernardino. These terrorist attacks, fueled by Western imperialism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... France's Marine Le Pen of the neo–Nazi National Front is gaining massive traction. UKIP, the British party that serves as a toned–down front for the Holocaust–denying British National Party, is polling extremely well. Over here, we have Trump. Trump, the reality star. Trump, the obnoxious billionaire. Trump, the audacious racist who wants to expand the USA PATRIOT Act and grant even more power to the NSA. Trump, the ultimate neo–fascist. What happened to the Jews and Roma in Germany, what happened to the Armenians and Assyrians in the Ottoman Empire, what's happening now to the Yezidis and Shi'a Muslims in ISIS–controlled territory and to the Palestinians in their occupied land–it can and will happen here. If Trump (the definite psychopath) wins (along with his European counterparts), propelled by the alt–right (his paramoralistic schizoidal minions), he's guaranteed to cause a Hell on Earth so great that it will rival the greatest tragedies of all the past. The eschaton or endgame plan of the global elite is a Fourth Reich that will conquer the globe in World War III. The very survival of our species is at terrible risk. If we do not shake ourselves from our slumber and awaken to love, peace, truth, and empathy very soon, we shall all perish in the material flames to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Dont Ask, Dont Tell Homosexuals should be allowed to serve openly in all branches of the US Military Gays should be allowed to openly serve in all areas and levels of the U.S. military because logic and the tide of political correctness dictate that such should be the case. The American armed forces had, since the early revolutionary war, held sodomy (then generally defined as the conduct of performing anal or oral sexual act) as grounds for discharge. It was in 1950, when the Uniform form Code of Military Justice prohibiting homosexual and heterosexual anal and oral sex was passed, that the gay ban began. Under President Ronald Reagan, the gay ban was more stringently enforced. In the 1990s, amidst vicious opposition to repeal the ban, President Bill ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, homosexual 's open service should no longer be an issue of "friction" because the American society is increasingly moving towards open acceptance of gay developments that even include gay marriages and open military service. The fears of the deterioration of heterosexual military members in the event of open service of gays in all military branches are no longer supported by studies on civilian and enlisted service personnel 's attitude. No less than Service members Legal Defense Network (SLDN) 's Director of Law and Policy Sharra Greer have observed that in the present, "Heterosexual service members serve alongside lesbian and gay colleagues every day and they are increasingly comfortable doing so" (New Poll). There is, in fact, a considerable presence of gay and lesbian Americans serving in the armed forces. Despite the ban on open gay service, the different opinion survey results reflect how both the American public and the enlisted personnel themselves either find the matter of sexual orientation irrelevant to military performance, or recognize the contributions of the enlisted gay members to the country 's military. An estimate places the number of gay and lesbian Americans serving in the armed forces at 65,000 (New Poll). Since the gay ban began to be initiated in 1943, applicants had been pre–screened; for those who avoided or survived the pre–screening, a considerable number of homosexual ... The main speaker was his father, Dennis Shepard, a 70 year old male who is the father of two in the upper middle class of Wyoming. He went to the University of Wyoming and is currently working as an Industry Safety Engineer. However, he is also in a lot of grief and anger due to the murder of his 21 year old son Matthew. This was a trial against Mr. McKinney and Mr. Henderson for beating his son to death; where he wanted to "prove that this was a hate crime and not just a robbery gone bad" (Shepard). Another example of logos is "You made the world realize that a person's lifestyle is not a reason for discrimination... This is not the 1920s, 30s, and 40 of Nazi Germany" (Shepard). • 7. Culture of Fear Essay Culture of Fear Culture of Fear, by Frank Furedi, is a book that looks at how widespread fear impacts Western cultures like the United States and Great Britain. Frank Furedi believed that society tends to panic too much, as we actually enjoy "an unprecedented level of safety." I admit that Frank Furedi's novel is based upon a novel concept, and an interesting one at that. However, Frank Furedi comes off to me as little more than a fear monger and an intellectual elitist. His book, to me, seems redundant more often than not. But sometimes part of college is learning about points of view that you may not agree with, so I tried to maintain that perspective when I read the book. We were explicitly instructed to not write a summary, but rather our thoughts on the book. My suggestion for those who would like the book in context: read the book. Part of me wishes that I held back a little in my writing, as I fear that my thoughts betray me in an unfavorable light. But these are all unedited, one shot deals here. Oh, and on the off chance that Frank Furedi himself reads this, then... um... loved the book. And don't read my position piece project. Preface and Introduction Upon reading the first part of COF, it made me realize what a widespread epidemic widespread panic can be. We fear so much in this country, and not just safety issues. We fear offending people by being too PC, we fear litigation, and that perpetuates warning labels which foster even more fear. Fear is what gets politicians elected, and fear can even be a hobby to adrenaline junkies. Fear to me is a fascinating emotion. People take it as a negative, but to me it's there for basic survival. Fear can also make people bond. After 9/11, the whole country was in fear. Yet, for the first time I can remember, the whole country was a united one. Chapter 1: The Explosion of Risks First of all, this book is similar to some things I'm learning in social psychology. It wasn't any suprise to me when I

Henry Gerber Gay Rights Essay "Sex was something mysterious which happened to married couples and Homosexuality was never mentioned; my mother told me my father did not believe it existed at all 'until he joined the army'. As a child, I was warned about talking to 'strange men', without any real idea what this meant. I was left to find out for myself what it was all about." Mike Newman, who was a child during the 1950s America recalls how homosexuality was perceived during the post–World War II era (F). This sexual oppression was not only in Newman's household, but in almost everyone's. From 1920 to 1923, Gerber worked with the Allied Army of Occupation positioned in Germany (K). During his time there, he travelled to Berlin, a place where the gay community was massively supported. He later wrote, "I had always bitterly felt the injustice with which my own American society accused the homosexual of 'immoral acts.' What could be done about it, I thought. Unlike Germany, where the homosexual was partially organized and where sex legislation was uniform for the whole country, the United States was in a condition of chaos and misunderstanding concerning its sex laws, and no one was trying to unravel the tangle and bring relief to the abused." Gerber founded the Society of Human Rights, inspired by the work of a German Doctor Magnus Hirschfeld and his work with the Scientific–Humanitarian Committee, on December 10 of 1924 in Chicago. • 12. Same-Sex Marriage in Modern Society Same–Sex Marriage in Modern Society Many same–sex couples want to be granted the right to legally marry. The reason is simple: They are in love with each other. They want to honor their relationship in the greatest way society has to offer, by making a public commitment stand together in good times and bad life brings. While they receive some state–level protections, they do not receive most of the Federal emotional and economic benefits and protections of marriage. They are denied their right to equal protection, both under the US Constitution and some state constitutions. The paper will point out that supporting gay marriage by means of legal recognition is the most appropriate form of recognition of the same–sex partnerships, because it eliminates discrimination promoted by the federal and some states' level. Referring to state court decisions of 2009 and 2012 and the well–known 2003 Lawrence vs. Texas decision of the Supreme Court, the paper will show that, currently very mixed pictures regarding the legality of the same–sex marriage on the Federal and (some) states' level urgently requires a solution by means of a nationwide legal recognition of the phenomenon. In its final parts, the paper will introduce opposing arguments and reasons on how to encounter them. I would recommend the policy of legal recognition of gay marriages as the most appropriate form of recognition of the same sex partnerships. Reason being, gay persons do not enjoy most of the federal and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How would you feel if someone told you that you couldn't marry the love of your life simply because society doesn't think that it is right? Can you imagine the devastation you would feel, being told that you are an inferior specimen my society? This travesty is occurring in our country on a daily basis. Same–sex marriage should be nationally legalized in the United States with a law or an amendment because it is a step closer to equality for everyone. The law this state recently passed is Proposition 8, also known as the California Marriage Protection Act. In truth it isn't just a law. Proposition 8 was recently passed by Californian legislature as a new amendment to their state constitution. This amendment forbids any same–sex marriage throughout the state of California. This California bill garnered a lot of support from many different sources. Much of the support that was behind this bill was religious in nature, especially by the Mormon group. However, not all of the support behind this bill was religious. There was also a number of political supporters, most notably Sen. John McCain. However, in his statement, he never actually said that he personally was against same–sex marriage. He only said that he supported Proposition 8 because it seemed like the majority of the constituency of California supported it. Bills and amendments like these have a significant effect on an average homosexual's state of mind, as shown by a study: The odds of mood disorders at wave 2 was 1.67 times the odds at wave 1 among LGB respondents in states with amendments whereas the odds at wave 2 was not significantly different than the odds at wave 1 among LGB respondents in states without amendments (Hatzenbeuhler, et al. 454). In addition, this report will give an explanation into how a classical theory would resolve the issues surrounding the subject of gay marriage. With radio, television, film, and print media outlets and vast groups of member churches, they can simply release political communications or ask for the support of the people who go to those churches. In addition, the religious right has an influential group of very wealthy and politically formidable contributors who have executive sway inside the Republican Party (Fetner, 2008). When President Clinton started to exercise his executive freedom to repeal the military's ban on homosexuals, the religious right was ready to rally their congressional buddies to object to the president's idea and in the end, resulted in maintaining the ban via the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue" negotiation. Gender Dysphori A Controversial Mental Disorder Gender Dysphoria Katlynn Tolley Gender Dysphoria is a controversial mental disorder that affects the medical, social, and personal aspects of the lives of many people. There is no definite known cause that is agreed upon in the medical field. Research is still underway to determine causes of Gender Dysphoria as well as effective treatment options and ways to increase the quality of life for people diagnosed with it. Gender Dysphoria, or GD, is a condition in which an individual feels like their biological sex does not correspond with the gender they feel comfortable identifying as. To understand the disorder, you must first understand the meaning of the words. Gender is "the state of being male or female" (Merriam–Webster). Dysphoria is a synonym for dissatisfaction. Therefore, Gender Dysphoria means the individual is dissatisfied, or uncomfortable, with being either a biological male or a biological female. In the past, Gender Dysphoria used to be called "Gender Identity Disorder" (Web MD). Another name is "Transvestic Fetishism" (Britannica). Signs of Gender Dysphoria can become apparent in childhood. Younger children may dislike toys and activities for children their age that line up with their biological sex. National white opinion in 1963, a year before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, was highly favorable of integration and equality with blacks. Sigmund Freud first used defense as a psychoanalytic term (1894), but he did not break the notion into categories, viewing it as a singular phenomenon of repression. His daughter, Anna Freud, expanded on his theories in the 1930s, distinguishing some of the major defense mechanisms recognized today. An excellent text about Sigmund and Anna Freud and the ego defenses is by Christopher Monte (1980). Repression: shoving thoughts and urges that are unacceptable or distressing into our unconscious. This is what happens to the unacceptable urges of childhood––the ego represses them. Taboo ideas, like incest, would probably never get into consciousness or, if they got there, they'd be quickly repressed. This must have been a belief in the Victorian era, since syphilis was the disease that was feared and said to have come from sodomy. In this era, violence from society also attacked homosexuality. Homosexuals were hung, or lynched. (Sadownick par. 5) This history of homophobia shows that it grows in society from a person's upbringing. Things occur in a person's life that cause them to act in certain ways and believe specific things. The public hatred of gay men taught the generations that being gay was wrong, and that people that were gay needed to be punished. Homophobia was strong in the days of the Gothic writers, and though it has weakened, it still affects people in today's society. It even dates back to the Renaissance days, and is presented by Dante Aligheri is his Inferno. "And for this reason doth the smallest round/ Seal with its signet Sodom[...]". Sodom is a city known for crude sexual acts, which is where sodomy gets its name from. Since the Inferno is a world created by Dante, he believes that sodomy is a sin that is worse than suicide, and decides to put it just before the entrance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Social Injustice: the interplay of the LGBT community, hate crimes and the US On June 4, 2011, Cece Mcdonald lost the freedom to securely be herself. Cece Mcdonald was a young trans–woman who was walking with her friends past a tavern in Minneapolis when suddenly, a group of people started to barrage them with insults. One man insulted Cece directly by saying, ""look at that boy dressed like a girl tucking her dick in." The group of friends attempted to walk away, but before they got away, CeCe was physically assaulted with a glass of alcohol and a fight quickly began. Cece attempted to run away, but was quickly followed by the man who had insulted her earlier, Dean Schmitz. Cece turned around and in what she claimed was self–defense, stabbed Dean with a pair of scissors. Following that, the police arrived and Cece was arrested and later, since Dean had died, charged with second–degree murder. After the situation was investigated, there was a subsequent trial and Cece was forced to accept a plea deal that would give her 41 months in prison to avoid a longer sentence, given that she recanted her claim of self–defense. When the trial had concluded, Cece was put into a men's prison, a dangerous place for trans–women to be committed, for 19 months before being released. Cece's assault was one of thousands of hate crimes (violence towards a person based on race, sex, sexual orientation, sexual identity, etc.) that were committed in 2011 – of which about ... • 50. The Importance Of The LGBT Community The LGBT+ Community: Staying Strong in the Face of the Upmost Adversity "In our work and in our living, we must recognize that difference is a reason for celebration and growth, rather than a reason for destruction." (11) These words were said by Audre Lorde, and LGBT+ rights activist. Lorde along with so many others from all across the world have to face fellow humans who think that the LGBT+ members don't belong in the world. While the LGBT+ Community has suffered from much adversity, the movements by Brendon Fay and others inspirational activists have helped the community to become more accepted by the world. The LGBT+ is a group of individuals who define themselves as lesbian (L), gay (G), bisexual (B), transgender (T), or any other sexual or gender orientation that isn't heterosexual or cisgender. There are a wide variety of sexualities that vary from finding romantic or sexual interest in one gender (heterosexual and homosexual) to all genders (pansexual) to no genders (asexual and aromantic). As for gender, while most people believe that only two genders exist (male and female), there actually is a third gender known as nonbinary. Nonbinary is used as an umbrella term for any person who doesn't identify as male or female. Nonbinary individuals can identify as having no connection to the main two genders, having a connection to both of the main genders, as well as a variety of other combinations. • 52. Discrimination Towards The Lgbt Community Throughout the years, the LGBT community has put forth tremendous effort to gain rights and recognition in the United States. Yet there have been numerous laws that have discriminated and made them feel unequal. LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered. Many people in the community have a hard time accepting who they truly are in terms of sexual orientation or gender identity. Coming out is challenging enough on its own, and laws and regulations that discriminate against those who only wish to live freely can make it hard for them to do so. Living in the time period we do, we have seen many changes in the right direction as far as having equal rights for all, but it has not always been this way. There have been many movements and actions the LGBT community has taken over the years to get to where we are today. There have also been many laws and regulations specifically targeted at same–sex and transgendered individuals, some of which that still apply today. Discrimination towards the LGBT community is not something new. Although today it may seem normal to see two men holding hands walking down the street, forty years ago it was almost unheard of. This is why the Supreme Court case Baker vs. Nelson made headlines. In 1972, the Court ruled that a Minnesota same–sex couple had no constitutional right to marry. This all started when two male University of Minnesota students went to fill out a marriage application form. When the clerk denied the application ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Katriel Pacheco Ms. Tomlinson English One 8 March 2017 LGBTQ People and Equal Rights In the book, Teens and LGBT Issues, Hal Marcovitz shares, "In this technique – which is now called electroconvulsive therapy – an electric current would be passed through the brain triggering a seizure. The seizure, in turn, would alter the brain's chemistry," (Marcovitz 24). This shows how strong the desire for the LGBTQ people to fit the "norm" is. The LGBTQ community is put in a hostile environment everyday. Society has gradually learned to accept these people but prejudice and discrimination remain against them. LGBTQ people undergo harrasement, assault and abuse almost daily and this can cause serious medical conditions and can present fear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This quote reveals that even organizations dedicated to creating a better community and leaders, still reject people who are LGBTQ which then creates a more hostile environment. Despite the fact that the acceptance for LGBTQ peope is becoming increasingly normalized, this community should not have to face these problems in the first place; everyone should feel accepted by others and should not have to experience this type of discrimination. Furthermore, the discrimination of LGBTQ people is caused by people, afraid of others that are different and people who are too blind to see the consequences of their actions. Most people are afraid of the unfamiliar and it is normal for humans to be cautious, however it is not acceptable to put someone down and abuse that person, those actions make people inhumane. Sometimes people do not accept the LGBTQ community because of their religion such as said in the article, "Homosexuality and Religious Institutions", published by PR Newswire. Getting Away with Murder Aaron Getting Away with Murder Aaron Getting Away with Murder Aaron McKinney was recently convicted of second–degree murder for his role in the fatal bludgeoning of Matthew Shepard on October 6th of last year. During the opening statements of his trial, McKinney's attorneys argued that a homosexual advance from Shepard brought back a traumatic childhood experience which triggered "five minutes of emotional rage and chaos" (Cart "Rests" 1). The claim invoked, which was ultimately rejected by the judge presiding over the case, is known as the "homosexual–panic" or "gay–panic" defense. According to the Harvard Law Review, this defense, a manifestation of the temporary insanity plea, is "premised on the theory that a person with latent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1996, Henry Adams, a psychologist at the University of Georgia, devised a way to see if gay bashing was related to suppressed homosexual urges. He recruited a group of men between the ages of 18 and 31, categorizing them as either homophobic or non–homophobic. They were then shown explicit erotic videos depicting straight, gay and lesbian sex, during which penile circumference was measured by a plethysmograph. As a result of the video depicting gay sex, eighty percent of the homophobic participants showed "moderate to definite tumescense" as compared to thirty percent of the non–homophobic subjects (Stryker 5). Professor Adams concluded that most homophobes "demonstrate significant arousal to homosexual erotic stimuli," suggesting that homophobia is a form of "latent homosexuality where persons are either unaware or deny their homosexual urges" (Adams 441; "Antigay" 1). The homosexual panic defense is based on the theory that homophobic men may actually have repressed homosexual urges. Homophobia is often indicative of self– loathing homosexual feelings; many homophobes subconsciously use anti–gay attitudes as a disguise for their own homosexuality. Dr. Patrick Suraci, the author of Male Sexual Armor, suggests that a gay basher wrestling with homosexual impulses of his own, "instead of being able to accept those homosexual feelings within himself, he wants to kill those feelings" ... Why, a gay couple not be allowed to participate in the ultimate expression of love––a marriage? However, the idea of gay marriage has not gained acceptance in this country. Americans, like all human beings, are naturally resistant to change. Humans are especially resistant to change when it has shoved down their throats, which is what many see it done by the liberal courts nowadays. As we have seen with blacks ' quest for civil rights, change must come gradually over time; otherwise, unrest and further division created. In addition, the history of gay marriage spans decades, even centuries of undocumented ceremonies and commitments. Denmark became a trailblazing country, leading the way for the concept of registering same–sex couples in what we know as a civil union. "This pioneering country voted on a law to register domestic partnership of gay couples on May 26, 1989." (Bennett, 1996) The law went into force on October 1 1989.The initially challenge is an ethical one. Gay couples want the same rights as heterosexual couples, and by classic reciprocity principles, this is something all citizens can understand. The Importance Of Japanese Prejudice In Farewell To Manzanar According to the novel Farewell to Manzanar, "I smiled and sat down, suddenly aware of what being of Japanese ancestry was going to be like. I wouldn't be faced with physical attack, or with overt shows of hatred. Rather, I would be seen as someone foreign, or as someone other than American, or perhaps not be seen at all" (158). After the bombing at Pearl Harbor, the government saw all Japanese–Americans as enemies even though most, if not all of them, had done nothing wrong. They were taken from their homes and send to awful internment camps where they were treated as prisoners. The Japanese–Americans stayed in the camps four years, just because of where they come from. During this time Americans completely turned against the Japanese people living in their country and bombarded the news with anti–Japanese propaganda which showed how much racial discrimination there was, even back in the 1940s. While Farewell to Manzanar explores this concept, there are many questions in which the reader is left with. First, the Japanese–American Internment was fueled by more than war time panic, which reveals the question: what role did prejudice play in the Japanese–American Relocation? Then, there is the question: what modern day connections can you make with this time in American history? Lastly, this story leaves the reader with the question: do you think something like this could happen today? • 62. Mental Health And The Lgbt Community Introduction There have been many studies on mental health in the LGBT community. With more people being open about their sexual orientation, the LGBT community has become a bigger target for those individuals who create difference between groups to justify discrimination of a particular group. The discrimination towards the LGBT community has caused problems for individuals in the community, mental health being among the biggest problem. Studies have shown that the discrimination of LGBT individuals can affect mental health. Not only are there various laws that deny same sex marriage but according to there are government benefits that favor the traditional family over a non–traditional. Due to discrimination lesbians and bisexuals are more likely to be at risk for mental disorders compared to heterosexuals (Cochran and Mays 2003). Mental health issues are not only seen in the adult LGBT community but in the youth LGBT. Studies suggest that mental health disparities can exist during adolescence (Mustanski et al. 2010). The purpose of this review is to show that the LGBT community is at higher risk for mental health disorders and psychological distress. This review will show that discrimination among the LGBT community is linked to the risk of mental health disorders and psychological distress and also demonstrate that lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth have high levels of emotional distress. The Effects of AIDS and the Media on the Gay Liberation Movement: The Constitution promises liberty for all, regardless of one's sexual orientation. However, throughout courses of history in America, homosexuals have lived in a conformist climate, and they have experienced various levels of discrimination. Despite this, America also provided homosexuals with the power to fight their oppressors, thus the Gay Liberation Movement. This movement was not one of linear pattern, especially because of the effects of AIDS and the media. As a result of pre–existing discrimination and the stereotyping of homosexuals, the media and the public stigmatized AIDS, which temporarily halted the progress of the Gay Liberation Movement; however, after the devastating effects of the AIDS epidemic, the movement advanced as the media shifted the discussion of AIDS and allowed for homosexuals to fight for proper treatment, research, and rights. Due to a conformist society in which homosexuals felt oppressed by conservative views, homosexuals were discriminated against and ridiculed, causing interruptions in the movement and a difficulty advocating for their rights. Due to homosexuals' lack of conformity to societal norms, many believed homosexuals were not normal and needed to be "fixed". So, doctors and psychiatrists used electrical shock treatment; when homosexuals protested this and disrupted the psychiatrist' parley, their defense was that unhappy homosexuals came to them and requested ... What happens next is what changed this from a triggered "Gay Panic Defense" (which is, in my opinion a completely bogus and ridiculous excuse for those who can't control their fists) to a hate crime and a murder. After severely beating Shepard in the moving truck, Henderson tied him to the fence. Their decision to tie his body up for everyone to see is part of their intensions to make it a public display of what they believe should be private. In an interview for the Laramie Project (a play based on the events of Matthew's death), McKinney's girlfriend tells writers about why the two men really decided to invite Matt into their car. After being disgusted at the thought of being hit on by a gay man they go to the bathroom where they plan to put on a gay pretense in order to lead Shepard into their vehicle and rob him. They wanted him to be punished for "coming onto straight people." By lifting his body in midair and tethering him to the fence they were aware that someone would find him that way. They didn't hide or trash or burry the body, they made it a spectacle. But in doing this, you can deduce that this murder wasn't fully about Matthew Shepard. Ways that the cisgendered public attempts to normalize gender roles is through literature where "male authors... depict a young woman as frightened and helpless, and the female authors... poke fun of the muscle–bound idiocy of a "macho" man"( Alexander, p. 137). The idea as the female being weak and terrified and the man as muscular moron help to reaffirm the cycle of "gender tied narrations" that are tied to society's dominant public. This is important because society's cisnormative narrative teaches that gender expressions have strict guidelines that are "innate" in us at birth. These instincts dictate a lot about an individual; however, the recognition of transgender individuals cause the cisgendered to think that "gender is not necessarily an essential and natural given, but rather a sociocultural construct whose repeated performances–as masculinity and femininity" (p. 131). Lesbian mother groups fought not only against heteronormative families, but also for women's reproductive rights. Rivers underscores the advocacy of groups like the Lesbian Mother Union in favor of legal abortions, sex workers' rights and health care for all women, and against forced sterilization of women of color. The author innovatively presents this advocacy work as an unrecognized part of the 1960's sexual revolution. It would be interesting to analyze the reverse, that is, the impact the "free to love" revolution had on the general population's perception of the LGBT community. Lesbian mother groups also fundraised money for custody cases. Women who left their heterosexual marriage faced the possibility of custody loss, poverty, and employment discrimination. Most believe that marriage is purely a heterosexual right and that this right cannot be afforded to those with immoral thoughts or behaviors.
