Ozone has been used successfully for the treatment of various diseases for more than a decade.
Its unique properties include immunostimulant, analgesic, antihypnotic, detoxicating, antimicrobial, bioenergetic and biosynthetic actions. Its atraumatic, painless, non invasive nature, and relative absence of discomfort and side effects increase the patient’s acceptability and compliance thus making it an ideal treatment choice specially for pediatric patients.
Deep pits and fissures are difficult to clean and hence are highly likely to cause food lodgement resulting in bacterial growth. Ozone application in such cases has been found to be highly effective. Cleansing the fissures prior to ozone treatment is recommended. This permits the ozone to readily access the caries.
Ozone should be considered an adjunct to existing treatment and preventive methods rather than an isolated treatment modality.

2. Ozone is a blue gas present in abundance in
stratosphere.
It is derived from the Greek word “Ozein”
which means odorant.
It is often created by thunder and lightning
and is also known for its interaction with
industrial pollutants at ground level.
Ozone being heavier than air, falls downward
to earth from such high altitudes.
3. It cleanses the air and combines with any
pollutant that it comes.
Ozone exists as colorless gas, with a
pungent odor at room temperature.
It is an unstable gas that cannot be stored
and should be used at once because it has a
half-life of 40 min at 20 °C.
4. Ozone gas has a high oxidation potential and
is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and
protozoa.
It also has the capacity to stimulate blood
circulation, platelets, and immune response.
5. This strong oxidant property has led to use of
ozone in medical and dental fields.
6. Basic forms of ozone application:
1) OZONE GAS
2) OZONATED WATER
3) OZONATED OIL
7. There are three different systems for
generating ozone gas.
1.Ultra violet system:
produces low concentrations of ozone, used in
aesthetics & for air purification.
2. Cold plasma system: used in air and water
purification.
3. Corona discharge system: produces high
concentrations of ozone. It is the most
common system used in the medical/dental
field.
9. Anti-microbial action - Ozone acts on bacterial
cell membranes and renders the spores
defective. Also inhibiting growth of fungus and
protozoa at various stage.
Activates the immune system.
Anti-inflammatory and analgesic action.
Ozone increases oxygenation and reduces
local inflammatory processes, thus improving
the metabolism of inflamed tissues.
10. Ozone intensifies remineralization potential
when acting on the organic substance of
mineralized tooth tissues.
Also enables the diffusion of calcium and
phosphorus ions to the deeper layers of carious
cavities by opening of the dentinal tubules.
11. APPLICATIONS OF
OZONE IN DENTISTRY
DENTAL CARIES
When applied for prolonged duration; ozone
gas has a strong bactericidal effect on
microorganisms within the dentinal tubules of
deep cavities, consequently improving the
clinical success of restorations
12. IN CROWN DISCOLOURATION
Treated after placing bleaching paste in the
pulp chamber followed by ozone exposure for
3–4 min by the virtue of its oxidation property.
13. FOR ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
Specially with peri-apical lesions. When used
as an irrigant, ozone encourages tissue
regeneration and bone healing.
Also the root canal can be disinfected by
ozone water.
Hence in periapical infections, ozone therapy
can increase the scope of nonsurgical
management of these lesions.
14. IN SENSITIVITY OF TOOTH
40–60 s application of ozone is found to
instantly reduce sensitivity.
Ozone initiates removal of the smear layer,
opens the dentinal tubules and widens them.
On applying calcium & fluoride ions enters the
dentinal tubules easily, preventing the fluid
exchange from these tubules.
15. MUCOSAL INFLAMMATION
Also patients suffering from cancer undergoing
any sort of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Ozone therapy applied in both aqueous and
gaseous forms makes a better quality of life for
patient enabling the patient to eat normally.
16. PERIODONTAL
POCKETS
150 ml of ozonized
water to irrigate the
periodontal pockets
for a duration of 5–10
min once weekly for
four weeks in patients
suffering from
aggressive
periodontitis.
17. PERI IMPLANTITIS
As a precautionary ,measure for prevention of
infection and enhancement of bone regeneration,
Ozone is bubbled into the socket for about 40sec,
followed by placement of implant into the socket.
Post procedure after sealing the abutment and
protecting the tissues, during debridement &
curettage, irrigation is done with ozonated water.
On the treated areas, 3–4 times daily
application of ozonized oil can also be advised.
18. CLEANING OF PARTIAL DENTURES
Ozone can be applied for cleaning the surface
of removable partial denture without
compromising the physical properties of the
alloy.
ENHANCE WOUND HEALING
Mainly in post-extraction cases it improve
properties of erythrocytes and facilitates
oxygen release in the tissues.
19. DENTAL
PROCEDURE ON
CHILD PATIENT
Ozone application
being a very quick,
effective, easy and
especially a painless
procedure to perform is
quite helpful while
dealing with pediatric
patients.
20. ADVANTAGES
Non-invasiveness and simple procedure
Less time consumption
Elimination of dental phobia
ADVERSE EFFECTS
Known side-effects are:
Poor circulation
Upper respiratory irritation
22. In the event of an ozone intoxication the
patient must be placed in the supine position,
inhale humid oxygen, and take ascorbic acid,
vitamin E, and n-acetylcysteine.
Because of ozone’s highly oxidative power, all
materials that come in contact with the gas
must be ozone resistant, such as glass, silicon,
and teflon.
