God bless you as you examine His Word,
Your servant in Christ, 2Cor. 4:5
These Microsoft PowerPoint presentations are provided "for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ"
(Ephesians 4:12-15). To help Christians to "to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ." So that "we are no longer...tossed here and
there...by every wind of doctrine." They may be downloaded and modified free of charge.
Matthew 10:8 …Freely you received, freely give.
3. Acts 2 Is Fulfilled Prophecy
• Acts 2 is one of the most interesting
passages in the Scriptures. This is the
beginning of the Christian church.
• Peter said in Acts 11:15 "And as I began
to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them
just as He did upon us at the beginning.
3
4. Acts 2 Is Fulfilled Prophecy
• Acts 2:33…he has received from the Father the
promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what
you now see and hear.
• John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he
will give you another Counselor to be with you
forever
• John 14:17…But you know him, for he lives
with you and will be in you.
• None of Joel 2
5. Who Were They In Acts 2:4
• NAU Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with
the Holy Spirit … 5 Now there were Jews
living in Jerusalem, devout men from every
nation under heaven.
• The “were filled” is “verb indicative aorist
passive” meaning, at this point in time they
were filled by God.
• The disciples gathered together surely would
be also called “devout men” “living in
Jerusalem.” Most of them had followed
5
6. Acts 2:4
• NAU Acts 2:4 …they were all filled with
the Holy Spirit …
• The “were filled” means they were not
filled before, just as Jesus said.
• Some synonyms for “filled with the Holy
Spirit” are, born again (John 3:3, 7, 1 Peter 1:3, 23),
new creation in Christ (Galatians 6:15), baptized
with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11, Acts 10:47, 11:16),
a child of God (John 1:12, Galatians 3:26, Romans 8:14).
6
7. Acts 2:4, Unsaved Religious
• So, in Acts 2:4 we have devout, religious,
Jews, who kept the Sabbath, believed in
the true and living God, tried their best to
keep the Commandments, they followed
Jesus, are gathered together worshiping
Jesus after the resurrection…
• However, they were not filled with the
Holy Spirit, not born again, yet.
7
8. Yeah But!
• Yeah but! This is only one passage showing that good
religious people aren't necessarily born again.
• And why make such a big deal about being born again?
• Lot’s of people are spiritual or religious!
• Matthew 7:21-23 “"Not everyone who says to Me,
'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, … 22
"Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we
not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out
demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23
"And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you;
DEPART FROM ME… 8
9. Other Scriptures: John 3:1-18
• NAU John 3:1 Now there was a man of the
Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the
Jews;
• 2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to
Him, "Rabbi, we know that You have come
from God as a teacher; for no one can do these
signs that You do unless God is with him."
• 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly,
I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot
see the kingdom of God."
9
10. • 4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be
born when he is old? He cannot enter a second
time into his mother's womb and be born, can
he?" [religious man does not get it] 5 Jesus answered, "Truly,
truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water [water
with the word, Eph 5:26] and the Spirit he cannot enter
into the kingdom of God.
• 6 "That which is born [passive] of the flesh is flesh,
and that which is born [passive] of the Spirit is spirit.
• 7 "Do not be amazed that I said to you, … 10
Other Scriptures: John 3:1-18
11. • 'You must be born again.'
• 8 "The wind blows where it wishes and you
hear the sound of it, but do not know where it
comes from and where it is going; so is
everyone who is born [passive] of the Spirit."
• 9 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can these
things be?"
• 10 Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you
the teacher of Israel and do not understand
these things?
11
Other Scriptures: John 3:1-18
12. • Nicodemus should have known;
• NAU Ezekiel 36:26 "Moreover, I will give
you a new heart and put a new spirit
within you; and I will remove the heart of
stone from your flesh and give you a
heart of flesh.
• NAU Ezekiel 11:19 "And I will give them
one heart, and put a new spirit within
them…, [Ezekiel 18:31]
12
Other OT Scriptures: Ezekiel 36:26
13. Other NT Scriptures: Acts 10
• NAU Acts 10:1 Now there was a man at
Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of
what was called the Italian cohort,
• 2 a devout man and one who feared God
with all his household, and gave many
alms to the Jewish people and prayed to
God continually.
• 3 About the ninth hour of the day he
clearly saw in a vision an angel of God who 13
14. • had just come in and said to him,
"Cornelius!" 4 And fixing his gaze on him
and being much alarmed, he said, "What
is it, Lord?" And he said to him, "Your
prayers and alms have ascended as a
memorial before God.
• 5 "Now dispatch some men to Joppa and
send for a man named Simon, who is also
called Peter;
14
Other Scriptures: Acts 10
15. • So, Cornelius is a devout man, who
believed in Jehovah God, feared God,
gave alms to the poor, prayed to God
continually, his prayers and alms went up
to God as a memorial…
• Yet he is not “born again” yet!
• The rest of the chapter explains how God
had him send for Peter to hear the gospel
and receive the gift of eternal life.
15
Other Scriptures: Acts 10
16. Other NT Scriptures: Acts 8:14
• Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles in
Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received
the word of God, they sent them Peter and
John, 15 who came down and prayed for
them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.
16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of
them; they had simply been baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they began
laying their hands on them, and they were
receiving the Holy Spirit.
16
17. Demon Possessed Girl Acts 16:16
• NAU Acts 16:16 …a slave-girl having a spirit of
divination met us… 17 Following after Paul
and us, she kept crying out, saying, "These
men are bond-servants of the Most High God,
who are proclaiming to you the way of
salvation." 18 She continued doing this for
many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and
turned and said to the spirit, "I command you
in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of
her!" And it came out at that very moment. 17
18. Other NT Scriptures: Acts 19:2
• Paul in Ephesus; Acts 19:2 He said to them, "Did
you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"
And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard
whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, "Into
what then were you baptized?" And they said,
"Into John's baptism." 4 Paul said, "John baptized
with the baptism of repentance, telling the people
to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is,
in Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when
Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit
came on them…
18
19. Being Religious Doesn't
Mean It's From God
• NAU 2 Corinthians 11:14 No wonder, for even
Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15
Therefore it is not surprising if his servants
also disguise themselves as servants of
righteousness; whose end shall be according
to their deeds.
• NAU Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and
said to them, "See to it that no one misleads
you… 11 "And many false prophets will arise,
and will mislead many.
19
20. What Must We Do To Be Saved?
• NAU John 8:24 "Therefore I said to you
that you will die in your sins; for unless
you believe that I am He, you will die in
your sins.”
• NAU Galatians 1:8 But even if we, or an
angel from heaven, should preach to you
a gospel contrary to what we have
preached to you, he is to be accursed! 20
21. • NAU John 20:31 but these have been
written so that you may believe that Jesus
is the Christ, the Son of God; and that
believing you may have life in His name.
• NAU John 1:12 But as many as received
Him, to them He gave the right to become
children of God, even to those who
believe in His name, 21
What Must We Do To Be Saved?
22. • NAU John 3:18 "He who believes in Him is
not judged; he who does not believe has
been judged already, because he has not
believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God… 36 "He who
believes in the Son has eternal life; but he
who does not obey the Son will not see
life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” 22
What Must We Do To Be Saved?

• NAU Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this,
they were pierced to the heart, and said
to Peter and the rest of the apostles,
"Brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Peter
said to them, "Repent, and each of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for
the forgiveness of your sins; and you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

25. Acts 2, “pierced” A.W. Tozer
