From the Desk of the Head of the Department:
A Meme is an interesting ‘sign’ of communication. The word meme is a neologism coined
by Richard Dawkins. It originated from Dawkins's 1976 book The Selfish Gene.
Richard Dawkins likened the process by which memes survive and change through the evolution
of culture to the natural selection of genes in biological evolution. Dawkins defined the meme as
a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of
imitation and replication, but later
definitions would vary.
Merriam-Webster dictionary defined -
A meme is an idea, behaviour, or style that
spreads by means of imitation from person
to person within a culture—often with the
aim of conveying a particular phenomenon,
theme, or meaning represented by the meme.
Gordon Graham states in ‘Genes: A
Philosophical Inquiry’ that “A meme acts as
a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols,
or practices, that can be transmitted from
one mind to another through writing, speech,
gestures, rituals, or other imitable
phenomena with a mimicked theme. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural
analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures.
Well, the purpose of this explanation of ‘meme’ is to understand how funny-looking photograph
of Mr. Bean with a dialogue between interviewer and ‘me’ (whoever reads this) is so significant
meme in the times of leadership crisis.
When observed from the distant hill-top position with a hind sight, every passing-out batch
makes me think something vividly and yet in very general terms i.e. not specific about individual
students, but about entire ‘class’ / ‘group’. The batch passing out in 2020 makes me re-think
about the qualities and characteristics of leadership. This meme acts as a unit for carrying
leadership ideas, symbols and practices, that can be transmitted form one mind to another
through behavioural patterns imitated by others, supported and self-replicated and responded in
similar fashion. The contemporary phenomenon represented by this meme is exactly what was
experienced in last year. The meme speaks about leadership crisis in real-life situations. Social
media platforms like WhatsApp is just a means for communication. Communication is a very
significant strategic tool for good leadership. However, it shall be carried out in real-life
situation, lest it should remain only at communication level which does not materialize in real
life situation.
When it comes to developing leadership qualities among students, we follow the model of
‘Emergent Leadership’. The success story of Google is all about ‘emergent leadership. We have
also achieved significant positive results in past with the similar model of leadership wherein
there is little interference by teachers and students are free to display leadership qualities.
7. Page No- 7
I would like to borrow views of Stuart R. Levine published as The Skills Required for Emergent
Leadership on cutimes.com. He defined Emergent Leadership as ‘It is a type of leadership in
which a group member is not appointed or elected to the leadership role; rather, leadership
develops over time as a result of the group’s interaction. He concluded that it is not grades that
matters but ‘predictive of success were adeptness with the “soft skills” of leadership, humility,
collaboration and loving to learn, unlearn and re-learn… surprisingly, even the expertise was
not a useful predictor. For every job at Google, general cognitive ability as the primary attribute
of success and expertise as one of the least important. Google discovered that emergent
leadership skills – including a desire to learn and the ability to process and integrate disparate
bits of information for solutions and insights – were more important than content knowledge.
Somehow, I don’t know why, but I get such vibes that the passing out batch was lacking the
characteristics of emergent leadership. I have never felt an urge to write in Memorabilia
about ‘the lack’. I prefer to write about what positive attributes were ‘present’ among the
class of students passing out. Somehow, again I don’t know why, I feel – let me take this last
opportunity to teach something so significant as life skills – emergent leadership!
Many students are very talented in their respective areas of interest. . . . . But because they lacked
the attribute of emergent leadership, they failed to lead the group to achieve something
significant as a class.
Many of the students were having very unique skills, attributes, characteristics, creative power
and passion for life. Mentioning some of their uniqueness, not as per the attributes but
alphabetically, I would like to mention that Alisha - a passion for acting in theatre & TV; Ashish
- informed about his passion for badminton; Bhavnesh - shown good capacity to critically think
and articulate in equally good elocution; Dhaval - good drafting style in Gujarati language,
passion for photo-videography, media and also an insight for aesthetic designs; Dipti - displayed
hunger for deep learning; Divya - capacity to do hard work; Hetal - a passion for sports; Hina
was good learner; Jeel displayed attitude for research based learning; Kailas - a knack for
adventure sports; Krishna displayed a capacity to lead; Lalji was one of the most sincere in
learning and showed ability to unlearn & relearn; Minkal - displayed capacity to learn and
articulate learning for exam purpose; Mitalba was slow in traditional classroom learning but was
better in digital learning, especially in lab sessions; Nasim - developed an insight to read real life
through the lenses of literature; Nikita – displayed tremendous improvement in last semester;
Prakruti - good command over language and was able to articulate understanding in classroom
discussions; Prinjal - been very good in working hard; Ruchita - shown initial spark of passion
for learning and leading; Urvashi - good ability for sports; Vidhya was good in celebration and
cultural events; and Vishva had good language commands, ability to be creative and a leader.
Avni, Jetal, Jyotiba, mansi, Monika, Nirali, Rajdip, Richa, and Sejal were doing their bit as good
students and even helping others in various activities.
All these students had talents to make it larger than life; make something historical; make an
indelible mark. Somehow, that did not happen as I imagined or expected from them. And so,
when I reflect back on their endeavours, attempts, talents, attributes and ability to perform, I feel
they lacked something known as ‘Emergent Leadership’ - a desire to learn and the ability to
8. Page No- 8
process and integrate disparate bits of information for solutions and insights – were more
important than content knowledge.
The lack of emergent leadership leads to the corrosion of an ability to communicate effectively
also. If the students of literature (humanities) lack the ability to communicate, to share, to speak,
to opine, to contribute, or to disseminate their learning, reading, research and interpretations,
what happens is very tragic for entire discipline of humanities. We should always remember
what Richard Altick and John Fenstermaker said about the dire condition of Humanities in the
era of STEM: “If the humanities, including the study of literature, are in perennial crisis –
more so at the present moment, perhaps, than ever before – and the outlook for their survival
grim, blame must lie as heavily on us, their appointed agents, for our lack of enterprise, as on
the supposed unreceptiveness of the prospective consumers. (Thus), it is our responsibility to
seize every opportunity to communicate with the lay audience, as in book reviews or in articles
and essays in the popular press (read social media) on history, biography, and culture (and to
make such opportunities where they do not exist). Our contribution as scholars in this regard
is only a slight modification of our essentially two-fold task in the classroom: to educate
students at all levels to read, write, and think, developing in them the intellectually curious
habit of mind that casts a disinterested eye over all important issues, appreciating their
complexities; and to lead students by extensive reading and critical analysis of recognized
writers and thinkers, ancient and contemporary, inside and outside the mainstream, to seek, in
Matthew Arnold’s words, “the best that is known and thought in the world” for the purpose of
creating in their own lives a “current of new and fresh ideas” appropriate in this, our time.”
We, at Department of English, strive hard to cultivate the habits of observing the process rather
than the product; to nurture the habit of reflection, ponder upon everything we do; to habituate
mind to question, to examine and to test before believing into anything – and above all, write
about it, make it visible to the people in the world. We, the agents of literature / humanities,
have to snatch every opportunity we get and display emergent leadership qualities; and be
visible to the world by sharing our learning, reading, research & interpretations.
If these points are pondered upon, I hope, the passing out students will be able to shine out
wherever and in whatsoever position they are.
This ‘Memorabilia 2020’ is an evidence of their incredible talent. Thanks to Committee Leaders
for their reports. The Documentation Committee deserves an applaud for all the editing work.
The design work is done by Dhaval.
Best wishes to all the passing out students for the future of their dreams and desire!

A Message from the editors:
Editors of Memorabilia: Ashish, Dhaval, Krishna, Prakruti, Ruchita, and Vishva
The Documentation Committee is pleased to present the Memorabilia which records the events
and activities of the academic year 2019-20. The process went through the stages of collection,
organization and edition of data by the editors. After all this was the stage of compilation.
However, for us, the process was more of a learning cycle. As editors, we got to learn how to
deal with people for professional work as well as how to use the digital skills we’ve learned for
the process. As new and new forms and methods have been developing for documentation of our
everyday as well as professional activities; it would be interesting to know how they are used by
the upcoming batches for this work.
Apart from the usual framework of Memorabilia, this year’s copy of the document also includes
the following matters:
1) Annual Reports from the newly formed committees: the Finance Committee and Mass Media
Committee
2) Events attended at the Department of Gujarati
3) A glimpse of the National Youth Festival
4) The abstracts from the various seminars held by the University
The committee is grateful to Dr. Dilip Barad for his constant guidance and support in the process
of formulating the same. The tedious process of documenting every academic and non academic
activity was a tough job. And yet, it was possible because of the efforts of our members as well
as colleagues. We are also thankful to all the committee leaders for their support and co-
operation in the process.

“History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet
the inadequacies of documentation.”
-Julian Barnes (The Sense of an Ending)
Not only is documentation an essential academic skill to be developed but it is also, as the above
quote suggests, an important lesson to be learnt about life. It marks an important aspect of
learning. With this idea in mind, the Documentation Committee of the Department of English,
functions rigorously to document not only the memories of the students but also their academic
achievements.
The Documentation Committee records the curricular and co-curricular activities carried out at
the Department of English. From the celebration of various festivals to the expert lectures
organized for providing new insights into the texts they learn.
It is also the responsibility of the Documentation Committee to prepare the Memorabilia; which
includes within itself all the academic and non-academic activities carried out at the department
as well as the students’ achievements in the span of the whole academic year. The method and
medium of documentation involve the use of social media platforms like Facebook and
22. Page No- 22
WhatsApp. We are grateful to the Head of our Department who keeps the record of our activities
and shares them with others.

the past.”

Technology has made tremendous changes in the present world. There is no corner that is not
influenced by this digital world. Technology in education helps to improve the quality of
education and improve language learning through the help of various apps like Duolingo,
Lingbe, Hello English, Utter etc.
The ICT committee takes care of the digital tools available at the Department and also guides the
23. Page No- 23
students in their usage for the various academic tasks assigned by the teachers. We use Language
Lab, projectors, laptops, etc, to explore our knowledge related to literature. Our department has
23 laptops, projectors, technical machines and other technical tools.
Under the guidance of Dr.Dilip Barad ICT committee leaders had organized a two-day workshop
for juniors. In this workshop seniors made presentation on various topics like how to join in
Google Classroom, how to use Microsoft office, how to do Modern Language Association(MLA
Citation), how to use Google, Google site, Slideshare, YouTube Channel, Digilocker,
SWAYAM, Urkund and much more.
Digital India Cell also organized workshops for the University Department and Colleges to make
them aware about upcoming mobile technologies. These technologies are supposed to be mobile
based and covers all aspects of student administration. Mr. Palak Soni and Mr. Bhavanneet Kahe
programme officers. I - MADE project, TCoE, DoT, Government of India were resource persons
of the workshop.
We are students of English literature and people think that literature is all about reading, writing,
understanding and analyzing books. However, that's not the case in our department. In this
English department we use technology at each and every step of our academic journey. The man
behind this innovative and developmental step is Dr. Dilip Barad.
Sir added one child window (Technology) into our mind in our first semester and now, in fourth
semester the child window has become an important bookmark of our life. Now, we are multi-
taskers with remarkable usage of technology.
The ICT Committee is very thankful to all members and to all those students who helped the ICT
Committee. A special thanks to Dr. Dilip Barad sir.

Finance Committee:
Leader: Lalji. G. Baraiya
“I will tell you the secret to getting rich on Wall Street. You try to be greedy when others
are fearful. And you try to be fearful when others are greedy.”
– Warren Buffett
There are different beliefs about money for everyone; for someone money is more important but
there is a question that how to invest money? Where? When? For someone it’s elixir of life, but
according to my view, Money is a tool which helps to fulfill some kind of desire and also helps
to achieve goals but we can’t buy happiness, peace, health…etc because everyone is running for
getting more money but in the end we lose all the things. I developed a sense of management
through as a leader of the finance committee.
When I started sem-1 at that time several committees created by Pro. Dilip Barad sir, so for the
entitled of the financial committee, I was nominated as a leader. This year we have arranged
different celebrations and academic workshops. Throughout the years we spent money on the
following events. Moreover I learnt how to handle the budget? How to spend money? How to
collect money?
Thus, I would like to thank Pro. Dilip Barad sir for allowing us freedom for spending money and
also thanks to Hina Chauhan and members of the Finance Committee for supporting me. I hope
this effort will be carried forward by upcoming batches in upcoming years.

Daily schedule committee Report:
‘Perfection is a theory. You cannot be perfect human being, perfect artist. One cannot be
perfect. I probably am not. But go through your daily routine with hope you will be a little
better in all respect and do something meaningful.’
As this quote suggests, perfection is a myth. We cannot be perfect but we cannot stop trying to
be better. And if we want to be better than we have to learn something new every day. Best way
to learn is to share and listen to something new from people. We cannot interact with the entire
person around us. So it is difficult to know who has something new to share. Especially when
you are a student it is very difficult to interact with the whole class.
So in our department we have a tradition of having a daily schedule. So that students can share
their ideas with everyone. By this way both the semesters of our department came together and
shared their knowledge. So every other person who doesn’t have any idea about that can get new
information. After this only we have our classes.
In this daily schedule we have different columns in which we participate. The columns are
thought for the day; which gives us new thoughts every day. The column of news allows us to
have the information of the things which are going around us. Through the column of vocabulary
drill we can learn new words every day. As we are studying Literature we also have the two
coulombs of poetry recitation and Regional Literature which enhance our knowledge of
Literature. We also have a column on the personal presentation so that students can share
information or show whatever they wanted to show. We also have the column of General
knowledge, Photography of the day, Movie and book review and last humor of the day.
26. Page No- 26
All this allows students to gain the knowledge of different things together. Also we have some of
the special DS. This year we have organized the semester 1 special DS, Sports say special DS,
Gurupurnima special DS and Hindi Day special DS.
The main reason for DS is that we can be updated about what is going on and also we can share
our ideas. So it is a necessary part of it that we can become aware about the national affairs. And
also we must think and give our opinion.
One of the most debated and burning issues of the year 2019 – 20 is the Citizenship
(Amendment) Act, 2019 was passed by the Parliament of India on 11 December 2019. By this
time when I am writing this committee report the issue isn’t solved but has increased. From
today whosoever is seen as doing something against it will have to pay for it.
For this big political decision, we have organized the debate on the 25th of December 2019. In
which students have shared their thoughts about this decision.
As I have mentioned in the beginning of my report that one cannot be perfect. But by doing this
kind of small effect every day we can be better and can improve. And this Daily Schedule helps
us to do some offers in order to be better.

Bulletin Board committee:
Leader: Dipti Gohil
Every institute uses a bulletin board but the point is which kind of use bulletin board so it
becomes an x-ray image of any institute. And here I want to show our department of English x-
ray image in a verbal sense. In our department we use bulletin boards for multiple purposes like
to inform students, to instruct students, to show reports of events, to put creative art of students,
to put worthwhile articles in newspapers and magazines. This year we have a lot of conferences
in our university and we get invitations to attend conferences or participate in conferences as per
invitation students also participated in our university conference as well as other University
conferences.
Our department head also put useful articles and magazine cuttings on the bulletin board then
students read enthusiastically. Few students aren't able to speak in the classroom but they give
their activity like poetry, painting etc. to put on the bulletin board. As per our department
tradition daily we write quotes on the out-side bulletin board and I am happy to know that
students read them regularly. This year one thing is notable is our department's notable workshop
and activities also published in newspapers and we also put that published cutting on bulletin
board. As the leader of the Bulletin Board Committee I was daily writing new quotes on the
bulletin board and I feel good to write quotes because that quotes always inspired me in every
situation and may be that quotes also become inspirational for readers. For our acknowledgement
I had organized an age celebration of Renaissance age and Neo classical age and I am thankful to
my classmates as well as my juniors.
And at the end my journey as leaders I would like to thank to active member and some of
students were always ready for help me special thank to Kavisha, Prakruti, Vishva, Sejal junior,
Ashish, Minkal, Dhaval, Lalji, Vidhya without your help I couldn’t do my best so I am warmly
thankful to you. And I am also thankful to our professor Dilip Barad for giving me the
opportunity to become leader and always encouraged us.

The 21st century is an era of globalization and industrialization. Therefore for the conservation
of the natural environment, plantation and gardening skills become important skills to be
acquired. Nowadays, trees are being cut more which is not a good sign for the future. So to fight
industrialization we need to keep balance with nature also. We should plant more trees, as they
are the source of oxygen and some of them also have medicinal properties. In exchange, we just
need to provide them water. In recent times because of industrialization we can't find more
places for trees. The government also works in the direction of nature conservation through
various policies. So, now terrace gardening is also happening with the help of hydroponics
method. We all surely know about how trees and gardening are beneficial for us, so we must
keep doing such activities. As part of our department's tradition we plant trees every year on
specific days to encourage and develop a sense of environmental concern among the students. As
every batch of Department plants the trees, this is good for the upcoming time of Department as
well as students. This year also the Gardening Committee organized a three-day
Gardening and cleanliness drive.
"Garden is a complex of aesthetic and plastic - intentions; and the plant is, to a landscape
artist, not only a plant - rare, unusual, ordinary or doomed to disappearance - but it is also
color, a shape, a volume or an arabesque in itself".
- Roberto Burle Marx.
41. Page No- 41
So, on the 31st August we have done cleanliness of our campus. With the tree plantation this
cleanliness also becomes a major part of the global world. This time our sir has decided to make
two big digs and then think to implant saplings, so the aim of that is that plants keep growing
well and sustain for more years. So, the roots of plants stick well with soil. So, don't able to fill
out both digs. We use only one dig for plantation. For the second time we have organized Tree
plantation on 21st December. So, we planted 4 trees (2 Neem trees, 1 kamar kakdi, and 1 Banyan
tree). One Banyan tree was brought by Heena Ma’m. Then after cleaning our department's
campus we got a chance to clean our university campus on behalf of the 150th birth Anniversary
of Mahatma Gandhi from NSS. On the 13th December, We went for University cleanliness and
we met our University Vice Chancellor and discussed sanitation and cleanliness awareness of
Uni. There we have provided a good lunch from University. As a part of NSS we were proud to
do this work voluntarily. On the next day i.e. 14th December, the Gardening committee decided
to do some cleanliness as well as painting trees and blocks. Here is one special event about some
volunteer students who do their work for the garden (Laljibhai, Tamsa, Sima and Vikeshbhai
(previous peon) on 10th December 2019.
•• Countation of Trees:-
This year we counted the trees. So right now we have 54 trees in the department including this
year's trees also. We also thought about the nameplates3 of the trees of the Department but
unfortunately we weren’t able to do it. We hope that our juniors will do it. So, here by I am very
thankful to Dr.Dilip Barad because of establishing this Committee, so that's why we can do such
kind of work regarding gardening. In further I am very thankful from my heart to all members of
the Gardening Committee for being present on the special days of Gardening and to contribute
your work, with this a very special thanks to all students of the Department for being a part of
work and supporting us in our work.

During all the sessions both classes were willing to do such kind of work by heart and they were
on time. I think when I was selected for the Gardening committee leader at that time I didn't have
any ideas about how to manage this entire work, but at the end of our semester four I learnt many
things. Gardening is a life skill and it gives me peace and satisfaction.
We, the Gardening Committee leaders are thankful to Dr. Dilip Barad sir for his guidance and
support.

Celebration Committee
Leader: Alisha Vaghasiya, Vidhya Pandya
“People of our time are losing the power of celebration. Instead of celebrating we seek to be
amused or entertained. Celebration is an active state, an act of expressing reverence or
appreciation. To be entertained is a passive state. It is to receive pleasure afforded by an amusing
act or a spectacle… Celebration is a confrontation, giving attention to the transcendent meaning
of one’s actions
The Wisdom of Heschel
First of all let me introduce the leaders and members of this committee….

Experience:
As a Celebration leader we learn so many things in the department of English. In the department
we learn so many things through Celebration. We celebrated all the events happily. In the
department we learned a lot as a leader, I also had a responsibility first of all I didn’t know how
to fulfill my responsibility. Events like Youth festival, excel event, we like to write down all the
students’ names and fill in the form by the late night of the youth festival participatory. I was
very interested in doing all this work. I’m thankful to Prof. Dr. Dilip Barad Sir for his constant
support and guidance in our activities.

Film Screening Committee
“Every film should have its own world, logic & feel to it that expands beyond the
exact image that the audience is seeing.”
Christopher Nolan
The Journey of one year as a leader of “Film Screening Committee” was indeed a good one.
As I share my personal opinion, I have never had the experience of a leader prior. But as a
leader, I understand how sometimes things or situations are difficult. Sometimes friends also
become enemy. But it makes me more courageous and also taught me how things can be
handled.
Now let me give some of the glimpse about the film screening which we had watched in our
Department. Nowadays, we can see that most people go to the movies only for entertainment
rather than doing critical thinking upon that. Whereas in our Department of English, Barad
Sir taught us how we can do critical thinking, how we can connect the characters with our
own surrounding peoples and how the situation can connect with our own lives. As Sir said
that before going to watch the movie, we all have to think upon that or do some rough work ,
writings upon that so while watching the movie we can easily connect the dots. While
watching the movie, we learn how symbols, characters, dialogues and situations connect with
various things and our own lives as well.
I give you one of my own examples I went to watch the movie “Kesari” – during the movie
there are 2 scenes that I noticed:
46. Page No- 46
1} First I saw the Barren Land
2} Second Scene I saw on the Barren Land, the small plant grows which ultimately indicates
“Hope”.
So, as J K Rowling mentions in the Harry Potter movie, “Happiness can be found, even in
the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” So we can connect all
the things with our critical mind. We are watching the movie in our Department as a part of
our curriculum. During one year, we have seen a lot of movies which are relevant to our study
and also went to the theatre several times to watch various movies. After watching the movie
we also had a debate or discussion upon that. After that we also wrote the movie reviews. So
it’s ultimately the academic activity which we had done through movie screening.
Following Films and Plays were Screened during our Academic
Study:-

Library Committee
Library Committee Report
Library is a place where the solution of your every problem may lay. If you are in
search of finding any solution of your problems, no need to be worry, Books –
your faithful advisers are always there for you, it helps you to see that you are not
alone there. In our English department, Library is well managed by keeping the
wide range of books of English Literature that serves to satisfy the reading
potential of the students of English department, along with it we have reading hall
which provides better facilities to students to read at there. Though we are using
traditional library, to get wider access of books, e-books or e-library are also used
by students of the department. From magazines and newspapers to thesis, literary
books, SCOPE books, and NET SET books; all the reading materials are provided
to the students to grasp the knowledge and enhancing their understanding in
various capacities.
To build up library is to create a life.
It’s never just a random collection of books.
Carlos Maria Dominguez
During the last year we have had around 1000 books in our library gradually in
this year almost 700 books were donated in department’s library by Pro.
Dr.Bhupendra N. Shah, a professor of English at M.S. University of Baroda. Now
49. Page No- 49
our department has become literary more rich with having such amount of great
books. Library may not live long if there are no readers, it’s an immense pleasure
to informing that our library is very lively with having such amounts of students
who largely borrowed books from library and this isn’t for the sake of it, books are
also reviewed by students. We have students in department who love to read, the
reason behind that is Dr.Dilip Barad sir, our powerhouse who always encourages
students to read original text rather than merely relying on any other guide books
or websites. In the English Department, sir also has his own library who always
allows students to borrow books from it also. Along with it, students are also
exploring e-books and e-libraries to widen their literally horizon. Indeed, all the
students have their portable library within their pocket by having smart phones
with accessibility of Internet. To maintain all the works related to library, every
year, there are library committee leaders and members who are working for it
under the guidance of Prof. Dilip Barad sir.
This year I along with two other committee leaders got a chance to lead the
Library Committee. Being a committee leader, we organized three library visits for
students. Central Library, MKBU, Lokmilap and BAOU Library, Ahmadabad were
visited by students. Indeed, we are fortunate for getting a chance to visit Lokmilap
library and have had interesting talking session with Mahendra Meghani sir.
Indeed, we are thankful to Mass Media Committee for collaborating with us in
Lokmilap library visit and arranging worth listening talk session. Whatever choices
you make, it always comes up with certain outcome, to lead any committee isn’t
easy task for me at all, it’s always comes up with certain ups and downs but the
50. Page No- 50
one thing which I learnt from this journey is that if you can’t help people in any
other way, you can help them by suggesting books to read which may help them in
finding their solutions, in creating moral, philosophical and rational aura around
themselves. Really books are the something that urges you to find your inner voice.
At last but not least I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards Heena
ma’am, Vaidehi ma’am who are always there to guide and support us and equally
thankful to all the students for your noticeable co-operation.
-Minkal Italiya (Committee Leader)
This was not new for me to be a library leader. All ready I had an experience as a
librarian for 6 months. In this department, being a librarian, I felt all types of
experience. Sometimes it was good experience and sometimes it was bitter
experience. Through bad experience I could learn how to manage the library.
Mostly colleagues tried to support in organizing the books in a good manners but
some did not. And here I faced some difficulties to handle those who were not co
operating with me. But I was succeeding to handle them in all ways. And this is
my big achievement during the journey as a librarian. I would like to thank
Dr.Dilip Barad sir for giving me a chance to lead the library and also thanks to
Heenaba Zala and Vaidehi Ma’am to support me. I am also thankful to other
library leaders Vishva Gajjar and Minkal Italiya for supporting me in this great
journey.
-Krishna Patel (Committee Leader)
Being a library leader was a new experience to me
leading this committee with my classmates and juniors.
All have supported very well in organizing the books
and have took care of books in a good manner. All the
library visits were memorable and has left an impression
51. Page No- 51
on my journey of literature. I'm very much thankful to Dr. Dilip Barad, Vaidehi
ma'am, Heena ma'am and all my colleagues for supporting me.

1.One Night @The Call Centre
I read One night @ the call centre book of Chetan Bhagat. Chetan Bhagat is an Indian author,
columnist, screenwriter, television personality and motivational speaker, known for his Indian
English novels about young urban middle class Indians.
Novels:
1. Five point someone
2. One night at the call centre
3. 3 mistakes of my life
4. 2 States
5. Revolution 2020
6. Half Girlfriend
7. One Indian Girl
8. The Girl in Room 105
One night @the call centre is written by Chetan Bhagat. There are 6 employees (Priyanka,
Shyam, Vroom, Esha, Radhika, and Military Uncle) who working in the Connexions call center
in Gurgaon Haryana. The whole book told about the story of one night. All characters are sad or
confused in their own life. Radhika is upset with her husband and mother in law on that night.
She is cheated by her husband. Esha is also guilty because she slept with men for her ambition.
Priyanka is cheated by Ganesh. Vroom and Shyam also created by Bakshi. Military uncle is
upset because he left his family (he couldn't accept modern ideas). The story takes a drama and
decisive turn through a literal deus ex machina when the employees get a phone call from god. In
the beginning, we can see that the novel is started with the journey from Kanpur to Delhi. A
beautiful girl met to author and told the whole story with a condition that he has to make it his
second book.
As we all know that Chetan_Bhagat is very popular author. He used very simple language in his
books. I read this book with a single sitting. I completed this book in a day. He tried to show the
problems of young generation. The book is very interesting and not a bulky book.
Here, I am sharing my blog link

2) Chetan Bhagat’s One Night @ the Call Centre
Though I heard about Chetan Bhagat as a
voice of young India, never read any of his work. This was for the
first time I read ON@TCC.Have you ever think about a Bollywood
scene of having a cup of hot tea/coffee in winter night and you are
reading something which smoothen your mind with having a
storyline that provide you a lesson to come across certain problems
in your life. Then perhaps ON@TCC is fine choice for you guys.
Frame narrative unfolds during the journey from Kanpur to Delhi; pretty girl
offered a story to the writer by having a condition of making the second book of it. All the six
characters have their own story, Shyam and Varun are facing problems at their workplace;
though Radhika is married, she is never happy in her life; Military uncle has son but than even he
is living alone; Priyanka is in love with Shyam than even she forced to marry a NRI boy and
finally we have Esha who is rejected in modeling industry for having a shorter height. I am
mentioning all this stuff here because it has certain significance in novel, at the end after
receiving a call from god their deserted life changes in meaningful life. Every character comes
forward with their story which seems that these are the characters who lives around us. Though
the language is not as classy as of Ulysses, it has its own docile language that keeps you in the
flow with narration. The identity of every character reveals through the narration as well as we
can get hints about atmosphere, through the narration.
The book highlights problems of younger generation such as frustration; need to earn something,
effect of bossism, process of globalization with outsourcing, nationalism and so on. As far as
representation of youth is concerned, it is a reciprocal representation of relationship between
society and modern youth. In the very beginning of the novel Chetan Bhagat reveals the fear of
younger mind- which generates from their desire or need to cop up with trendy life style that
enable them to work at call centre under cruel boss.
“I was in the water while my boss Bakshi was in a boat next to me. He was pushing
my head down in the water”.
- Shyam(ON@TCC)
The use of an omen dream at the beginning of novel reveals the bossism culture of
India during the 2004, when the employees used to work at call centre with having numerous
messy problems in their own life. Along with Shyam, there are other five characters that
61. Page No- 61
basically working in call centre because they all are having a need of money. During the 2004, it
was the time when you could earn more as comparatively to other jobs, working at call centre
provided more wages to employees. Though this earning is not as fair as American earning men;
a keen observer of younger India showcases a frustration of the younger mind. In the novel
Varun says that…
“We get paid well, fifteen thousand a month. Fuck that is almost twelve Dollars a
day. Wow, I make as much a days as a Us burger boy makes in two hours. Not bad
for my college degree. Not bad at all.”
-Varun (ON@TCC)
To be very brief, Chetan Bhagat depicts the call center as ‘Electronic sweat shop’
against the popular glorious narration of call center Indeed, Call Centers contribute in strength
the Indian economy but on the other side it sucks the talents or skills of young generation who
are far better to do something than merely to do job in Call Center. Working in the call center is
not at all easy tasks for employees, ultimate their mental labor turns into mental frustration. In
the novel we have Esha and Varun who becomes victim of this. Esha takes sleeping peels to get
rid of hectic mental pain whereas Varun drives his bike to its optimum to burst out frustration.
“Mental Pain is more gruesome and unbearable than Physical pain”
Esha (ON@TCC)
Chetan Bhagat’s portrayal of call center seems quite realistic with providing inner call at the end
of the novel. (Click on the following link for further review)

3) Ghashiram kotwal - By Vijay Tendulker
The play write V. Tendulker is aware of present
political scenario. He intends to expose the evils of
politics. This is a field where power, sex, and religion are
deeply connected. All three combined together makes the
situation people horrible directly or indirectly all people
are influenced ‘Ghashiram Kotwal ’ is also a play
dominated by these issues.
(1) Ghashiram Kotwal on deputation:
Ghashiram comes to Poona for his livelihood. He is a Brahman from Kanauj. He begins
to work with Gulabi –a prostitute. Name visits her once. Nana’s ankle is hunt. It is seen by
Ghashiram. He supports Nana’s foot. He led his back for the supports. For this small action nana
is pleased very much. He is able to catch the attention o a great leader like him. Later on, he
deputies him, as the Kotwal of the city. It is great position. Power and position both come to him.
But Nana is very clever to do so. He has his purposes.
(1)Nana does not trust his own Brahmin people as many of them are against him.
(2)Ghashiram would be a safe weapon against them as he is outsider.
(3)Being outsider people will not trust Ghashiram.
So in this case he safe from both side.
In any case earthen he could blame Ghashiram or people. Thus Nana is a mastermind. He is
selfish.
(2)Ghashiram’s use of politics:-
He has found out that Nana is a lusty man. His visit to Gulabi is an example of thus more
over he come to a religious tale. There are women. All of them know that’s why they begin to
pull their saris to properly cover. Nana’s eyes catch out a young girl. A chance takes place. He is
relay to attack upon her but she escapes.
Nana could not bear, Ghashiram comes on the scene. Nana asks him to catch her.
Ghashiram assures him to bring her. His passions are so much aroused that he asks him to do
anything for her. Ghashiram takes benefit of the situation. He demands power from him in return
to her. He know that the woman is not anybody but his own daughter Gauri. He brings her to
63. Page No- 63
him when the order is signed. Thus Ghashiram gets power at the cost of his daughter.
(3)Evils of politics:
Ghashi soon realizes evils of politics. Nana demands Gauri one more time. Ghashi
realizes the situation. He has acquired the position on the basis of sex. Now the evil loose large
upon him. He repents for it but it is late now. He becomes restless. He begins to be heavy on the
other side Nana too takes more and more benefit. His visits to prostitutes are regular. Dance with
Gauri in presence of his citizens tells everything. Gauri become motive of his life and Ghashi
become terror to the city.
(4) Use power and position:
Ghashi becomes the terror to the people. He, being to use of his power and position.
There is revenge in the backdrop of morality. He had been insulted and humiliated. Now he got
opportunity to settle down the issue. He order or permits. Nothing is allowed without permit. In
the name of it he crushes the people. There is no limit of harassment. Innocent or bad all are
equally treated. There is so much force that good turns dad and bad into worse and worst. There
are false cases. They ere trapped, jailed and beaten. There’s no place in the jail. The prisoners
suffocate and die. For a small reason punishment is hard.
No doubt people stop many bad things. At night the streets are deserted. The lane of
prostitution is lonely. Brahmans have stopped cheating. They have been straightened. But it is
like spring. Only force has worked. Out of Poona everything I same. Many have started going to
bavannakhani. It is a prostitute district. Whatever it may be, but Ghashi’s shadow envelopes all
of them.
(5)Politics and religion:
Religion is a wine that rigid people drink it. The ignorant join with them. Result is very horrible.
The politicians know this and they use this wine for their purpose. They misuse the holy
institution. They have religious elements. There are songs and dance in the accompaniment of
music. There is Katha prayer and holy processions but politicians don’t have respect to such
things. Holy songs turns into lavani, dance turns erotic. Religious meetings become haunting
places. Women are found out from there. Gauri or Gulabi are such cases. Gauri finds of such a
meeting.
When the people revolted Nana bring religion. He wants to save himself. He tells his soldiers do
religions things which the Brahmins want. He knows it would satisfy them. Nana uses religion
his own way. He gives his meaning. Gauri indicates Ganesha’s idol. But he says he won’t mind.
He also two wives, one on each side.
Ghashi also uses region. For him it is in following morality. He asks for religions thread to any
Brahmin. Married women have sacred bracelet on their neck. For marriage it is proof but he
64. Page No- 64
denies and asks other things. Visiting prostitutes, telling lays sins and Ghashi order to have strict
vigilance over such things. Thus religion is a mask to Nana and Ghashi.
(6) Dealings and misdealing in politics:
The politicians use people and often people use politicians. Sometimes there’s narrow line in
their dealings to each other. Hunter is hunted down. He is trapped. Nana is a very cunning
politician. He was considered the Chanakya of the Maratha. For his libido and defense he makes
a deal with Ghashi. No doubt it is fatal to both. Nana loses his hold over people and Ghashi his
daughter. In this dealing Gauri is the scapegoat. Ghashi get power and position using his
daughter.
We think that Nana loses his hold. But his view is quite clear. He tells Ghashi that he would kill
his daughter with a bullet. With the other bullet Poona will dance. His design of making him a
counter check is revealed. He knows the Maratha Brahmins will not trust him. He says’ we made
you Kotwal’. Further he say,’ we just raised a dog at our door to the position of the Kotwali’. His
shrewdness is seen when Gauri is killed and in writing the order for Ghashi dead. In the first case
he uses religion. He gives a long, philosophic advice to him and follows the duty. He forces him
to obey his command. In the other case he uses people to kill Ghashi. Thus he removes both the
thorns.
Though the play indicates past political system. No one would be against that it is almost
contemporary political picture. Things are some only people and time have changed. Politics is
meant to help people but in ninety percent it does and brings evil.

4."ANAGAT"
"ANAGAT" the word itself has very deep and depth meaning. But I
don't want to reveal the exact meaning of ANAGAT in the very
beginning. But First of all, I would like to give the interpretation for
this word-ANAGAT in the words of the author-Harindra Dave,
ANAGAT means.............
" ેમ પણ વનની માફક પા હઠળના દ વા વો છે: એ પા હઠળ
કઈ છે એ અનાગત છે. પા ચકો તો દ વો રાણો થયો છે ક હ
ટમટમે છે તેનો યાલ આવે પણ આપણે અનાગતના ભયથી એ પા ને
ચકતા ડર એ છ એ."
The very beautiful and with the meaning of meaninglessness, with the best concept of the
creation, the author Harindra Dave gives the best novel - "Anagat". It has not only story, but also
life of them, to who with you are introduced and may be also visited in your own life. As
Quasimodo says........
"In vain you search in the dust;
Poor hand, the city is dead! "
The whole story depicts the fear of life that, what will happen, if we have further life ? The
author Harindra Dave gives the best idea of absurdity and how the circle of life is going on. The
novel has three main characters are..... Alok-Protagonist of the novel, Kristin Walverth-Heroine
of the novel and Manjari-Sub-heroine of the novel. There are also some important and notable
characters are Jamna, Mahervan, Pilu, Chhanalal (Chhanalal is a person, for whom we can say
that - HUMAN LIVES IN PAST AND IS ACTING IN PRESENT), Shyavksh, Garudi and many
other minor characters plays important role in the novel.
In our life we all must have to play a 'Mono Act' if we want to tell or to reveal the truth. Harindra
Dave gives the very effective and impressive line through the novel - "Anagat" that........
"સ યને પાવી શકાય - પણ સ યને છડચોક કટ કર ું હોય યાર નાટક કર ું પડ છે. ભા યે જ
કોઈમાં આ ું નાટક કરવાની હ મત હોય છે."
66. Page No- 66
The novel starts with the deeper and fearful concept that, Alok knows that may be this last 48
hours of his life, is the last 48 hours of his life, but the tragedy is that, even you and I, don't
know that what's the moment will be the last moment of our life! As Garudi says to Alok that.....
"બા ુ, જદગી બ ુ હાલી છે? તમને ૪૮ કલાકની જદગી મળ છે - અમા ું તો કોણ ણે? એક ણ
પછ ય આવરદા ૂર થાય. આવી જદગી ભા યશાળ ને જ મળે."
The novel reflects the best connotation of the alternative changes of not only human life, but also
the constant changes of whole the world that......
"રા ે પોતે ુતો હતો યાં જ યો છે ક કમ એની િવમાસણમાં એ આસપાસ જોઈ ર ો."
And author puts very significant line in the middle of the novel that.....
What's the meaning of agony, which is within, what's the result, may be come out from the
aloneness and the cruelty of ocean of 'Urad' that:
"જોખમી? નાં ર- આમ ને આમ ચાર લાગ ુધી ચા યા ઓ- મા ગોઠણ ુધી ું પાણી. આપઘાત
કરવા ગયા હો તો આટ ું ચાલો યાં િવચાર બદલાઈ ય ......."
Think yourself: - How do you feel if the person is not living suddenly with you, with whom you
have got too much anger and also have told to that one, please, never come in front of me! And
the moment comes to the very next that, that one person is not alive. There is two different side
of the self hatred that Remorse and Repent. And only because of this repent, one can never alive.
In this moment, death is also not able to satisfy the human soul and that's why, suicide is also not
answer, because............
"સાગરના ખારા પાણી એના ાસોની નળ માં ધીર ધીર વહતા થશે, એ ંધાતા ાસે ાણ ને િવદાય
આપશે, એ પહલા ું ું નહ થાય? પગમાં દ રયાના વોએ નીચેની રતીમાં કરલી આ ૃિતઓનો ભીનો
ૂંચતો પશ એની ચેતનાને બધીર બનાવી ર ો હતો......"
As we all know that, the beauty and the charm of something or someone can never be dead. But
it's also reality that the soul can not be able to stay forever! And only because of this harsh reality
of life, the village "Urad" is also losses the soul of its beauty, as writer says........
"હા.......ગામ મ ુંછે; પણ હવે એનો વ જતો ર ો છે-"
67. Page No- 67
We can find the best concept of the life of second bank, the understanding level , the truth of
truth, the worthy to note that, in one or other way we all are cheating our selves, and feelings ,
and how feelings plays the biggest role in the human life, which is totally absurd, as in the last it
has no meaning , because the single and only truth and fact of life is - "Death".
As we can find in the novel that.....
" ૃ ુની તરફ જઈ ર ું છે એ જ તો વન છે. ાંય નથી જ ુંએ કદાચ જડતા જ ન હોય?"
There comes a time in our life, where we find that, how beautiful world will be creates for us, if
we have covered that moment for a life long. But at this surface level, we forget that........
"બહારના લય પામી રહલા, િન ાણ બની રહલા વાતાવરણમાં આ માણસ દરથી વતો હતો.
બી કોઈ વંત વાતાવરણમાં આ માણસ કદાચ કઈ ુંકઈ બની ગયો હોત."
The very important thing is that, how many times we are dying in our single life? Because
only the death of body is not only death. Here I remember one famous shayari that...........
"સાંસો ક િસલસીલે કો નાં દો જદગી કા નામ;
We can imagine the confidence level of trust from the words of Alok that......
"તમે કોણ છો એ ું ન ું, તમે કવા છો એ િવશે ું ત ન પ ટ ં. કોઈના ગત વનમાં રસ લેવો
એ ભ માણસ ું લ ણ નથી, પરં ુ આ શરાબના ૂંટથી તમને કફ નથી ચડતો-મા તમાર
આસપાસ ુંઉદાસી ુંપારદશક વાતાવરણ એથી વ ુ ઘે ું બને છે. એની પારદશ તા ઘટ છે."
And as Kristin says......
"તમે જોઇને ુખી થયા, આલોક. એમને એ માણવા ું હ ું....એ મને ચાહતા હતા... મારા પ પર
ુિનયામાં કોઈ જોઈ ન શક એવા થળે ુદરતે િવ ૃિતની મહોર માર છે. એ માર સાથે રહતા અને ુખી
થતા."
When we are doing something wrong or something different, which may become the reason of
someone's pain, we come in the guilt consciousness from within. We all know that, that must not
be happened, but what's the matter of that, which is already, exists!
Harindra Dave puts the question in front of us that, what LOVE exactly it is? Because there is
the biggest question is that, whether there is love is exactly exist or not! And if there is love exist
then from whom and why and if that is love, then why we are doing such kinds of actions in our
life. Or the matter maybe is that, we have no idea for that particular idea for that - "What is
LOVE?"As Kristin says.......

Harindra Dave puts the second important question in front of us that, what will happen, if we
have got the exactly solution of our life? Until we get the idea of our life or the perfect reason of
our life, we have the charm of our life, as it is said that........
" ુંચ વનની યાર ઉકલાઈ ય છે,
. મા દોરાઓ જ હાથ માં રહ ય છે!"
There is always two ends of our life.
(1) Reality and (2) Fact. And the last wish of Alok has thrilled to Kristin that.......
"આલોક અસ વેદના વ ચે આથી આ શ દો બોલી ર ો છે, પણ આલોકની છે લી િવનંિતએ એને
ખળભળાવી દ ધી. આ ેમની ક ુલાત હતી? પશની ઝંખના હતી? ક મા અ ુકંપાનો િવ તાર જ
હતો?"
And the absurdity of life is reflects through two or three wonderful quotes of Harindra Dave,
these are...........
Harindra Dave puts the novel with the open end and the horrified and thrilling and fearful
thought of the Kristin that.......
" ૃ ુ પામતા માણસની ગમે તેવી ઈ છા પાર પાડવી જોઈએ, આલોક, પણ માનો ક તમે .........."
"માનો ક તમે વી ગયા તો.....
In short, we can say that...
Through the novel - ANAGAT, Harindra Dave gives the best idea of thinking and the perfect
way of thinking that how, not only human action, but also the destiny is connected to the human
life and the fate and reality plays the most important role in the human life.
We can also conclude here that,
Through the open ended novel-ANAGAT, author wants to ask us the very important and
answerless question that.........."Why we are living?" And the biggest question more than this
is that........"Whether we are living or not?"
