From the desk of the Head of the Department: Prof. Dr. Dilip Barad
The Memorabilia 2018-19 reminds the sense of an ending. Julian Barnes has
rightly said that the sense of an ending is one of the most curious senses.
There are ‘senses’ which are very crucial for human beings. The senses like
‘common-sense’ is necessary to understand worldly affairs when our academic
sense fails to unlock the enigmatic life. Similarly, ‘civic-sense’ makes us
responsible and accountable citizens of the democracy. Likewise, ‘academic-
sense’ guides us in using lessons learned in academia at right time and right
place. Unlike these senses, political senses is not much valued and talked
about. However, for the citizens who are eligible for casting their votes in
democracy, this sense is as inevitable as any other. Bertolt Brecht has equated
this with literacy and told very boldly that the worst illiterate is the political
illiterate. s/he hears nothing, sees nothing, takes no part in political life . . . and does not seem to know
that all citizens life depends on political decisions. Among all these senses, it is ‘historical sense’ which
makes a huge difference. In T.S. Eliot’s words - the historical sense involves a perception, not only of the
pastness of the past, but of its presence. The historical sense will help in better perception of zeitgeist of
our time and space. It is this sense which differentiates people from sheople (sheep + people). We, at
Department of English, while teaching English studies, makes an attempt to see that students develop
these senses and become more sensible towards their personal lives as well as our society.
Coming back to the sense of an ending, the most curious sense of all these high-profile senses.
When we get towards the end of two years, when a batch full of students are passing out – some
curious feelings engulf and numbs our senses. No! It is not this Keatsian ‘my heart aches, and a
drowsy numbness pains’ – sort of sense of an ending. It means an end of any likelihood of
change in the life. We work very hard and we expect a sort of progressive, positive, and
constructive metamorphosis among those with whom we so
passionately get involved. At the end of the year, the sense of an
ending engulfs.
This Memorabilia 2018-19 is nothing but a sort of pensive of all
those wonderful memories. It is like that Time-Turner device made
by Ministry of Magic in J K Rowling’s Potter series. It is like the
Time Machine of H. G. Wells. Turning pages of this memory-
booklet is like unwinding the time in Time-Turner or travelling
back in the Time Machine.
All credit for this sort of meticulous record keeping goes to the Documentation Committee. It is
really tough task. However, social media like Facebook is helping a lot to them in keeping
records. It was always satisfying to read their posts in the happenings with an interesting write-
up and a few photos. It is even more satisfying to revisit all those ‘happenings’ in this
Memorabilia, again.

When I look back at the quality of students who are passing out, I see that these students were a bit
quicker in adapting to technology than the previous batches. These students have surprised me on several
occasions. From presenting their work in digital form to working on online surveys, or preparing
certificates with mail-merge feature, or collecting data, or working in collaboration, or even this
Memorabilia itself . . . . With almost professional precision, they used assistive technology. I hope the
digital skills they have acquired and honed are going to be very vital in their future career and life.
Another unique feature perceived in this batch was their courage and confidence to speak-up and voice
their happiness as well as angst and anxiety. Many of them wrote and some even published good poems,
short stories, social media posts and blogs.
This was the batch on which we worked very hard to improve their
English language. Not that these students were very poor in English
language. They possessed normal English language skills which is
common with all other batches. However, this time we were able to spare
time for remedial classes, answer-writing workshops and academic
writing workshops. In a way, this batch is fortunate to have many
sessions of improving academic English writing skills. Some of them
have learned it and displayed the improvement in their writings also.
It is a tradition that most of the activities are carried out by students
of the Department. They are divided in various committees and those willing to lead become
natural leaders. Every year, apart from regular co-curricular activities, some unique activities are
also planned by these committee members. This year,
• the Library committee planned a visit of Barton Library. This library is historically very
important site for all book lovers,
• the ICT committee organised workshop for P.G. students of all departments and exposed
them to basic digital tools. The entire workshop was conducted by senior students and
even the resource persons were members of ICT committee,
• the Film Screening committee organised watching Hindi film Uri – The Surgical Strike
in the cinema theatre,
• the Art and Creativity committee organised various competitions on the occasion of
Guru Purnima and made digital display of short stories, paintings, poems, photographs
and rangoli and winners were selected by online public voting system,
• the Celebration committee celebrated International Day of Yoga at Department,
• the credit of maximum participation in Sports and Adventure activities goes to the Sports
and Recreation committee,
• the Gardening committee carried out projects to support Swacch Bharat / Clean India
campaign,
• the Daily Schedule committee organised some very courageous debates on challenging issues
like Pulwama Terror Attack, Adultery Act section 497 of IPC, LGBT Act section 377 of IPC.

All members of the committee from Semester 4 and 2 are appreciated for these unique
activities. We know that all humans are not similar. Neither are we born to do similar
things in life, nor are we supposed to think alike. We all are unique and the uniqueness
shall be maintained, irrespective of what-so-ever-life offers us. In spite of this, the fact
remains that this rule does not apply to leaders. The leaders
are supposed to be different from other people. The
uniqueness of leaders lies in the fact that they are ready to
merge and assimilate with one and all. That’s the sure way
to lead the people. There is a famous quote ascribed to
Bruce Lee: “Be like water making its way through
cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object,
and you shall find a way around or through it. If
nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will
disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If
you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it
becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water
can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” Leader are supposed to be like water.
It is glad to see that without knowing all these things most of you have displayed these
characteristics. Be with it. In future, you may unlearn many things and relearn also. But do
not unlearn these characteristics of leadership which you have acquired by being so – water
like!
Lastly, keep reading literature. Great readers make for great leaders! Reading literature
ripens our maturity. The emotional, intelligence, spiritual, creativity, adversity, and physical
quotients (EQ, IQ, SQ, CQ, AQ, PQ of literature students / readers are much higher and
deeper than students of any other subjects / discipline. At the same time, I would like to
suggest to watch as many films as you can. In this year, we have seen the rise of web
streaming services. It has opened new vistas for acquiring all these quotients which
altogether makes for literary quotients and literary sensibility. If one wants to put it in
arithmetic equation, it shall have an integer of multiplication. So, it can be – LQ = IQ x EQ x
SQ x CQ x AQ x PQ. In addition, L = B + eB + F + YT + WS +TV, wherein Literature is equal
to books, eBooks, films, YouTube, Web Steaming and Television. Do not nurture bias against
these mediums. Do not privilege one over the other. All are equally important for the
acquisition of literary quotient.
Wish you all the best for your future career and life. Keep sharing your achievements with us. We will
make anecdotes out of your achievements and turn you into role-models for upcoming batches of
students.

The Genesis
Bhavnagar is traditionally known for its cultural heritage in the western India with
its last princely ruler Shri Krishnakumarsinhji who was the first to donate his
princely state to the
Nation. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation received his initial college
education in Samaldas College, which is the oldest college established in 1888,
which is today run by Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.
Bhavnagar District is situated between 21.18-22.18 Longitude and 71.51-72.18
Latitude. The district encompasses a total area of 12,048 sq. km. The University
was established way back in 1978 by the state of Gujarat and the total area of the
campus is 269 acres, spread over 3 location. The University is providing high
quality of Teaching and Research Programmes in faculties as diverse as Science,
Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Rural Studies and Law.
The University has at present 20 Post Graduate Departments and 4 Recognized
Institutes.

Inauguration of Atal Auditorium

Maharajakrishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University inaugurated Atal Auditorium
on 23rd
September 2018 with Carrier counseling, motivational workshop for GPSC
exam preparation for University students at MKBU. In Aishvaryam Youth
Festival, first time Drama and Skit were performed at Atal Auditorium. Afterwards
these types of events keep on happening in Atal Auditorium.
New Website of University
MK Bhavnagar University has updated its website and also they provide
everything digitally. Students and teachers can easily access important things like
Degree, Rank Certificate, etc. There are various government online courses
available like SWAYAM, MOOC. All the government websites like MHRD,
NAD, NSDL, UGC, IGNOU, mygov, Digital India, CVL NAD can access by
students from the university Website now.
Gandhian Study Centre:
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi-the Father of the Nation had received early
education at Shamaldas College in Bhavnagar. Department of History is therefore
involved in research activities of various aspects of the Gandhian Philosophy, For

the purpose, University Grants Commission, New Delhi, sanctioned a Gandhian
Study Centre for further research and to inculcate and reinforce the Gandhian
culture in the region.

This Program runs under C.B.C. System. It carries 100 credits. The students are
offered 16 courses as Core Courses and 10 courses as Elective Courses from which
they are supposed to choose any four courses.
Courses offered under CBCS to other students:

Two courses are offered to the students of all the P.G. Departments of Maharaja
Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University to earn additional credits and to enhance
their Communicative Competence, where as to the students of other Departments
(i.e. Gujarati, Hindi and Sanskrit), all the Core and Elective courses are offered to
get an exposure to the World Literature and Literary Critical Theories.
Research Based Course:
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in English Literature, American Literature, Indian
Writing in English, Post Colonial Studies, Translation Studies, Cultural Studies,
Comparative Literature, ELT and Use of Technology in Teaching English
Language and Literature.
Cambridge ESOL SCOPE Course:
This course runs in collaboration with SCOPE (Govt. of Gujarat Initiative) and
Cambridge English for the Speakers of Other Languages. It is short term course of
60 to 90 hours of learning. The Course runs on Blended Learning mode and
resources of Digital Language Laboratory are utilized for the same.
Achievements:
1. The students have passed Gujarat State Level Eligibility Test for Lectureship.
2. One of the students has been awarded Full Bright Foreign Language Teaching
Assistant Program (FLTA) scholarship.
3. The students are recruited as Teachers, Assistant Prof. and Associate Prof. in
various educational institutes of India.
4. The faculties have contributed to academic research by publishing books and
research articles in national and international publications.
5. The students have passed GPSC and other competitive exams for administration
and academic recruitments.

6. The students have presented research papers in national & international
conference and conducted workshops at various colleges on Language Skills and
Communicative Competence.
7. The students have participated and won prizes in Post Graduate Paper Reading
Contest (M.S. University, Baroda), youth and cultural events (Saptdhara Swarnim
Gujarat &Yuva Mahotsava) Sports and other academic events.

Prosaic Expression by the Editors: ‘The Doing is often more important than
the outcome.’
It was very great experience of the two years journey in The Department of
English is difficult to express our experience in words. We have learnt so many
things in the Deptartment of English. It cultivates habit of thinking in our mind.
Every student might have the knowledge and information but in which direction
this knowledge should be use it might not be known by them, hence the
Department has given them the right direction to find their destination. We spend
more time in the Department than our home, so for us it is very difficult to leave.

In real sense ‘Everyday is Sunday’ in our department because we enjoy each and
every day without any type of regret. We love to attend lectures of our beloved
professor Dr. Dilip Barad, it doesn’t matter how long the lecture is, sometimes it
takes full day but we enjoy thoroughly. One of the best lessons that we learn from
Dilip Barad sir is keep plan B ready. Whatever the circumstances are, the show
must go on. Therefore, we have to keep plan b ready to deal with any situations.
The Department prepared us to face all sorts of challenges in life, we have learnt to
overcome fears like stage fear, participation in any events and activities without
hesitation.
In our Department we share our ideas in daily schedule which make us mentally
strong and help build confidence. The Department taught us how to organize
events and it gives the freedom to students to call and arrange talk with intellectual
personality from any field. For instance, Kavitaba Gohil invited well known author
Bhupendrasinh Raol who talked about his book “Rasaynik Geeta” and also
Mahirpari Goswami invited Rajnish Tomar who enhanced our knowledge of GPSC
and UPSC.
We express our gratefulness towards our beloved Head of the Department Dr.
Dilip Barad who taught us important lessons of the life and role of literature to
shape us from sheeple to independent-thinking-human-beings. We already know
how to use technology but after two years of the Department we have learnt how to
integrate it for academic purpose.

them to create bridges of their own.”
We are also thankful to Dr.Heenaba Zala and Vaidehi Hariyani for their great
support in learning. They helped in every situation as like friend. They tried very
hard to improve our language through remedial classes.

1. Documentation Committee

Documentation is an important aspect of
accountability which not only provides record
of the work being done but also recognizes
efforts and reinforces the system. In any field
there should be documentation which keeps the
event alive for longer period of time.
In the era of digitalization people don’t believe without any kind of proof that’s
why we need to documents things. In academic field it is necessary to record all
the things which will show you the chart of the progress of particular field. For
example, In India from very ancient time there is one beautiful place “Valley of
flower” which is not known to everyone until it was search and documented by
British mountaineers Frank S. Smythe, Eric Shipton and RL. Holdsworth. Then
people started to research the “Valley of Flower”. So in this way documentation
help us to know about particular thing with proof.
English Department used to celebrate numerous events, activities throughout the
year. So, function of documentation committee is to record all the events and
activities in the form of Blog and Facebook post with appropriate images. It also
motivates student to participate in academic and non-academic activities because
social platform is used by everybody. In this way the world will know about our
departmental activities and the progress of students.
We are using Facebook for documenting academic and non-academic events. This
is very useful digital platform because we can download images at anytime and

also get the date on which the event occurs. The other way to document things is
blogger. All students of our department have their personal blog account in which
they are writing their experience, movie review, thinking activity etc. and share on
Google plus, Facebook, Whatsapp. Introvert students also find platform to share
their thoughts.
There are various committees in our department like Daily Schedule, Library, Film
screening, Sports and Recreation, Art and Creativity etc. The mother of all
committees is “Documentation Committee” which documents all the creative
activity of various committees. This Memorabilia plays a vital role in preserving
all sweet memories. This year various events celebrated at Department of English.
With the celebration of International Yoga day we started our new semester. Ph.D
viva, student’s participation in National and International conferences, Aishvaryam
youth festival is common every year. Other celebrations like kite festival, Navratri
festival, Christmas, Gurupunam, Republic and Independence Day etc also
celebrated in our Department.
We would like to thanks Dr. Dilip Barad for giving us opportunity to work as a
Documentation committee leader and to record each and every event. It will also
help us to document events in future. We are fortunate that we get opportunity to
edit this golden Memorabilia which serve as torchlight for all the upcoming
batches.
2. Film Screening Committee

Now days, films have become very powerful
tool in education. Films connect ourselves to
characters emotions and situation so we can
easily understand text. It also helps to
understand about culture of that time. In our
department, we learn that how movies are
connected with our life and culture. We learn to see symbols and understand that
what director want to say by symbols, critically analyse Story, Character etc..,
Normally people can’t able to do this. For all these things I am heartily thankful to

Pro. Dilip Barad sir who taught us how to watch movies and Movies are not just
for entertainment.
In our Department of English, we are using movie screening as educational tool in
which we have watched many academic or extra - academic movies. Throughout
the two years, we have under taken many screening of films like, Frankenstien,
Hamlet, Robinson Crusoe, Oliver Twist, To the Lighthouse, and The Birthday
Party, Waiting for Godot, Mourning Becomes Electra, Da Vinci Code, The Scarlet
Letter, Midnight Children, and Series of Harry Potter etc… Apart of syllabus, we
also had screening of Movie Lagaan, Rang de basanti Student of English
Department also went to theatre to watch movie Uri: The surgical Strike. This
movie was about terrorists attacks in Uri.
In our department, we have not just watch movie but we have done do discussion
or debate on it. We have also written movie reviews.

Art is something which differs one from ‘other’. In the era
of 21th century peoples are use to technology. But there
are still so many things which are hidden which our
committee tried to explore.
In the beginning of the term we had organized a Guru-
Purnima competition. Idea of this competition is given
by Mehul Dodiya. In this competition students had explored their creativity. There
are many sub-competitions conducted on Guru Purnima Competition. There is no
boundary and restriction for participation, Because Art has no barriers. In second
term we had women’s day special theme celebration. There is Dress Code of
Blue and Pink and also student’s given their art forms and we had Exhibition on
Bulletin Boards.
Guru Purnima celebration has different Phases of Competition, like- painting,
photography, poem, short-stories, essay, cartooning and poster-,making. We
had received reviews by Public Voting System For this competition. Winners
awarded with gifts and certificates. Women's day special theme was presented in
form of painting and poem. In this way theme wise celebration gives a cultural
value and also new outcome of talent and art gives a opportunity to add a lifetime
memory.
“Aeshvaryam” Youth festival is task for us to Document all the things. As a
literature student we have to look from different angle so here we found so many
interesting things, points to ponder.

This year, Barad sir has added a new event of Birthday celebration. For this event,

us in every event. At last we would like to thank our HOD Dr.Dilip Barad for
allowing us to celebrate events and his participation in events.
5.Sports & Recreation Committee

to youth in a language they understand. Sport
can create hope, where once there was only
despair. It is more powerful than governments
in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in

By the same token, this above sentence is quite right if you are a true sport person.
As this above sentence has everything to tell. Undoubtedly, our Department has
shown a great caliber towards these all activities. Sometime we might feel that PG
centers are for academics contrivance (Actually it is) rather than other activities
like Sports and Recreation. But we should consider these all activities important

too because this is the age where youth can prove themselves. Apart from these all
things, one should not forget that what sports can do…!
As we have seen the value of these activities in learning, it’s time to talk about
establishment of Sports and Recreation Committee. Before we (Batch: 2017- ’19)
set feet in the Department of
English, MKBU. It was the Celebration Committee who was celebrating Sports
Day. But by looking forward, (Students approach/ interests) Students got
permission from Sir to establish a new separate committee for sports.

Apart from these all games, we have celebrated National Sports Day, International
Yoga Day and many students participated in Khelmahakumbh too. Prof. Dilip
Barad won above 40 Lawn Tennis Singles and Doubles tournament and
represented Bhavnagar district at Gujarat State level in Khel Mahakumbh.
There are so many other players who have contributed a lot in building this
committee. Like Kavitaba – Squash, Dharaba–Table Tennis, Reena, Urvashi,
Dhaval – Tennis. However, these all things would have been not possible without
one person. Yes, Dr Dilip Barad, who keeps providing a unique role model for all.
Who leads from the front, who knows backing very well – most important thing in
building a player so, now we are hopefully looking forward to the new/ energetic /
kinetic generation to carry out their game spirit forward.
It is possible that as a ‘captain ‘we might not fulfilled the expectations of a ‘coach.’
We accept that we are unfeathered, though it will help us in future life.
6. ICT Committee
Ramiz Solanki & Zankhna Matholiya
Literature and science have always been at
conflict, but in the department of English
things are different. In department both
literature and science walks together keep
hand in hand. The second decade of this
century is of information and technology and
communication, these are inseparable parts of
studies.
In department of English students get chance to use various communicative tools
to stay connect and to study with the world.
Our Professor and Mentor, Dr. Dilip Barad makes us habituated with ICT. He
possesses profound knowledge of technology and with his irrevocable intention of

making us prepare for future prospects through the use of it provides us guidance
because of which we are able to learn literature with the help of technology.

In department different technological tools are used to make teaching process
more enjoyable, more interesting and effective. We make use of various tools
while studying literature. There are different committees in department for
different purpose. ICT committee is one of them which take care of ICT tools like
projectors, language lab, Music system, laptops and of internet connections.
From the very first day in the department students are introduced with online
entrance test to get admission in the department of English. Department is very
progressive in matter of using and integrating technology in learning environment.
One of the advantages of studying in this department is that you will learn many
things regarding technology and web tools which are very helpful in teaching and
learning process.
It is because of our teacher Dr.Dilip Barad that we are able to use laptops and
language lab. Computers and laptops are in ample numbers that all students can
work.

can use. In laptop bank we have 17 laptops and 7 mini laptops.

activities.
⇨ Under the Shakshat project of blended learning headed by Dr. Dilip barad.
Faculties make use of movie screening for the better understanding of
literary texts.
The most difficult responsibility of ICT committee is to set up IP addresses
whenever there is a new computer is connected to Cisco, but this also worked out
very well throughout last year with the great help from ICT members.
First of all I would like to thanks our HOD Dr. Dilip barad that he provides such
techno-Friendly environment in place like Bhavnagar. I would also like to thank
Namrataba Zala, our senior and previous ICT leader and last but not the least
Member of ICT committee and all classmates and also juniors for their help
throughout. Without all of them, this journey of learning would have been
incomplete.
7. Gardening Committee
Jagruti Vasani
I grow plants for many reasons: to please my
soul, to challenge the elements or to challenge
my patience, for novelty, or for nostalgia, but
mostly for the joy in seeing them grows.

Gardening is the practice of growing and
cultivating plants as part of horticulture. The

goal is to create a garden in harmony with and adapted to a given area. We’ll start
with the most obvious reason why cultivating plants is so important: We can’t eat,
drink or breathe without them around. No plants, no life and that can’t be healthy.
Daily gardening chores like watering, weeding, trellising and harvesting are great
ways to augment an exercise regimen. We do all this things under the guidance of
our Head of The Department Dr. Dilip Barad Sir. Your brain also benefits from
time spent in the garden. Being outside in the fresh air and sunshine is an effective
way to boost your mood and de-stress.
It is our tradition of department to plant tree which can live longer; it’s done by
new batch, which will come every year. It was really memorable day. There are
various committees to do various activities throughout the year. There are in
gardening committee we have 27 members of both semesters. We are celebrated
gardening day two times in the whole year. In this year on 6th
and 7th
August, 2018
we celebrated first gardening day and we did memory tree plantation of new
batch’s students and through these we also become participants of Clean India
Mission and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. During those days we have done lots of
work around the area of department. We painted trees by geru and lime which
protect trees by trunks. Also designed the pot and cover the garden area by blocks
design. Then as per our department’s tradition on Republic day after Flag Anthem
we celebrated republic day as a gardening day. And after that work we take healthy
snacks and cold drink which is provide by sir.
There is greenery around our English Department and it’s providing us fresh air
and energy. Before many years there was not a single tree but at running days, we
can see it’s totally changed atmosphere
of Garden. Thanks to Dilip Barad sir
for this revolutionary change and give
us opportunity to become a part of this
grateful work.

8. Bulletin Board Committee
Niyati Pathak & Jagruti Vasani
“If you not willing to learn no one can help you If
you are determined to learn no one can stop you”
Bulletin board is the mirror of any institution which
shows x-ray image of student’s ability of creation
and expression, which runs with contribution of
student’s creativities. In our Department of English,
students share their various work like Poems,
Drawings, short stories, Articles etc. Also bulletin
board contains memories in form of collage which
reminds us memories of previous batches. So it is not just part of traditions but also
it preserves all memories. Some students may have hidden talent but little bit, to
speak and stand. But here are more things to share and enthusiasm Shawn by our
students’ .they share with us many creative activities throughout the year. As per
we had celebrated many special days like for example: women’s Day , Christmas
Day , Republic day, Independence day ,Gurupurnima celebration , accordingly we
organized things for bulleting . So that we can share things like what is happen in
our department, co-curricular activities. It was a great experience for us in this year
because from this year Dilip barad sir has gave opportunity that we had 2 leaders in
each committee. So, at the result of that we have done our best.
At the end of the journey we would like to thanks to our active members and
specially Disha Gediya , Vipul dabhi, Zankhana Matholiya , Krishna Patel , Jeel
vyas, Mehul Dodiya, for active participation and helping throughout the year
without you this journey as leader is incomplete .at last but not least we also
thankful to Pro. Dilip_Barad for time and again encouragement and brighten our
skills.

9. Library Committee
Reena Khasatiya & Jyotiba Gohil
J. K Rowling says on library that, when in
doubt go to the Library. But, now-a-days
library does not mean only books lying
there.
“A modern library with e-books and with
internet where you can find answers of your
all questions”
Department of English MKBU, though it is arts department, it is known as techno
friendly department. It makes very effective use of technology. Not only laptop
bank and free Wi-Fi, Department got its own library too. Our Department's library
made for the ease of students so that time and again they don't have to go to the
central library for books. We have more than 1000 books in our library related to
our syllabus and English literature. Apart from that we have SCOPE books and
CDs, self help kind books, NET-SET books, magazines and thesis. Our head of
Department, Dr. Dilip Barad has also his own library in his office. That also
student can use for their reading purpose. Along with that Dept. has its own
Reading room for reader in that we have different magazines, research paper and
thesis.
As the tradition of Department every year each committee member got new
leader for committee. Senior passes responsibilities on Junior's shoulder. In that
what is the responsibility one should fulfilled as leader of library committee? As
leader of library one should be careful for books, availability of books for all
students, to inform students about reference books related to syllabus and
remember the borrow and issues date and in the whole year several visit of various
libraries.
It is great experience of being a Committee leader along with Jyotiba Gohil. From
the very first day of semester 3, I try to be faithful to my leadership or
responsibility to Dept.’s library. We can’t deny students for books at any time.

Despite this, this year we made few changes in libraries cupboards position and
numbering of books for that I would be thankful for my juniors who took great
pain of work. Traditionally we used to visit central library of our University but
along with this year we also visit Barton library of Bhavnagar. At the end, to
possess a key of library doesn’t mean one become an owner of knowledge for that
everyone must read …read…and…read.
Jyotiba Gohil's experience as a library leader
As a leader for me it was good experience. For a leader it will never easy to lead
the people. As a leader I can't do anything all alone. I would like to thanks my
partner leader Reena and all our committee members and Friends for being our
support to full fill our responsibility. Thank you to Prof. Dilip Barad sir for
providing me an opportunity to be a Leader.
10. Daily Schedule Committee

Department is an institution and like all other
institutions in the world, it also needs to assemble and
meet every day to carry out all of its functions; therefore
here, in the department, a day starts with a bunch of activities, known as a “Daily
schedule”. To make the day auspicious we start our daily schedule with the
chanting of University song and then prayer. Then the next column is “thought of
the day”, which not only make students aware of the great thoughts and ideas of
the world but also teaches how to use it in life. One must know what is happening
around oneself. It is very important for oneself to take necessary measures at the
right time so here students came up with the idea of Newspaper reading. The habit
of reading newspaper not only enhance our knowledge but also improves accuracy
and fluency, it proves questioning which helps in generating ideas and inspires to
think. It is a kind of exercise, which gives an insight into the world around.

Albert Einstein a famous thinker once said that a person who learns a word a day is
smarter and wise than rest so therefore we have a column known as “Vocabulary
drill”. It actually drills out the frozen minds of learners and helps them to learn
new vocabulary with the examples from day to day life. The fifth column of DS is
Poetry recitation in which student presents English poetry. Opinion building is the
column through which all the leaders of various committees inform and notify
students about upcoming events. It is also the column from where the songs of
rules and regulations sung over time. Furthermore, Personal presentation is the
column, which gives a platform to present personal views of the participant.
Regional literature allows all the type of literature from all the languages. Here
students cultivate a habit of reading books as well as watching movies and then
they come up with reviews of it. The last columns are Humour of the day and the
National song. After DS sir gives the review about the performance of the students,
which encourages the confidence level of students.
Benefits of participating in Ds
Participating in Ds helps to improve Academic as well as Non-academic
knowledge in students. It helps to overcome stage fear and boost up confidence
level. It stretches on LSRW skills and encourages community involvements.
Therefore, learning happens everywhere, not just in the classroom.
Daily schedule committee not only limited to department activity but also
organize some charity events like A Blood Donation camp. It also arranges rational
talks with an author like Bhupendrasinh Raol.

Abstract: Whether it was Alice’s adventures in
Wonderland or those Disney tales or for that matter
the Cartoon Network shows, children’s literature was never ‘childish’ if ever
looked closely. Interestingly enough, the texts usually considered as children’s
literature by popular critics and readers are often full of political agendas, socio-
religious conflicts as well as scientific discoveries. One of the most popular
children’s literature texts, which fascinated a whole generation of kids, at home
and abroad, is the Harry Potter series. Today, it would be hard to find a kid who, if
not read, but hasn’t watched the cinematic version of this particular work by J.K
Rowling. “How Harry Cast his Spell” explains why the books meet our longing to
experience the truths of life, love, and death; help us better understand life and our
role in the universe; and encourage us to discover and develop our own gifts and
abilities (Granger). The fact that magic, can be a medium for someone to establish
an identity and that it is an equally respectable field of study, is something quite
unconvincing for a religion which has always condemned wizards and witches and
has portrayed them as the personifications of ‘evil’. And therefore, “Baptizing
Harry Potter” becomes an important text by offering a monk’s take on Harry Potter
series (Bell). The aim of this paper is to look at how far is the Harry Potter series
(particularly the cinematic adaptations) ‘a prolonged argument for tolerance and a
prolonged plea for an end to ‘bigotry’ as Rowling claims it, in context of religion,
and especially Christianity. “What’s A Christian to do with Harry Potter?” book by
Connie Neal says- Although the books present a clear picture of the epic battle

Abstract
This paper mainly focused on Archetypal characters of Children’s Literature.
Archetypes in literature are common characters, settings, and objects that are seen
in many different stories (Carson).Literature can be interpreted in as many ways as
possible, and there are different approaches for literature and one among them is
the archetypal approach (Kazhungil). There are many popular characters whose
archetype is same in all popular children’s literature. Some are Hero, Mentor,
Herald, Ally, Villain etc.
Children cannot get complex things; therefore authors used simple concepts, so
that children can understand it easily (Nilsen). Mainly archetypes and symbols
taught cultural or moral values to the children. In this way children can distinguish
between good and evil. Story of “Pinocchio” creates fear in children’s mind for not
speaking lie. Animals usually fascinate children. Wild animals like Lion
symbolized the power culture of society, other like Fox stands for the cunningness

or craftiness. Similarly Cow, sheep are considered as docile animals.
“Panchatantra” stories are the best representative text in this context for children
literature. Northrop Frye in his essay “Archetypes of Literature” gave many
symbols, myths which were used by authors in various contexts. Use of various
colors in Children literature is also common, rarely we find black and white.
Mostly everything is colorful in entire world of children literature. Beautiful
princess, Fairies like Cinderella, Snow-white, Tinker bell etc symbolized
spirituality and magical power. These all fairy tales of children literature gave
illusion of dreamy world. As children possess soft hearts, they cannot bear
anything cruel and harsh reality of society, so the literature works accordingly and
build archetype of dream world in front of them.

Abstract
The philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ is untouched from the criticism and
readily accepted by the whole world especially Indian people as it comes from the
Maha Upanishad. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam means the whole world is one family
but there are some problems such as Casteism, Religious Conflicts, Political
Conflicts and many more which says that the philosophy is completely wrong. This
paper mainly focuses on the deconstruction of the philosophy ‘Vasudhaiva
Kutumbakam’, the main purpose is to show that this philosophy can’t be applied in
modern times especially in the country like India. I have been applied Social,
Political and Psychological aspects as well as taken movies like ‘Nayak’,
‘Baghban’, and ‘Aarakshan’ as reference to make my arguments more stronger.
After examine the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ through different aspects, it
becomes clear that it seems good as a philosophy that whole world is one family
but it can’t be applied in real life and can be called just a Hoax.

1. Report of Survey on ELT Activity to examine the
reading habit of students

Introduction
During my M.A. with English in Department of English MKBU,I have done one survey on
Reading habit of students. I had made one survey form and started the survey.
My Experience:-
First I had visit MSC students who behaved well with me. Then I had visit different field's
students like BSC students, B.ed students, B.A. students,MSW Students, B.com
students, BBA Students etc.they also gave me well response on this.
Most of them were interested in this survey because they found some new things like
education with technology in the survey. Behave politely and gave the response very
honestly. Most of them have question that why I am doing this?and I answered them
that this is my task and for that I am doing this. Some of them were also asking about
privacy of their gmail because they have fear that suppose I will make misuse of their ID
but I have given the surety to them that this is only for my task and I will never misuse it.
I had met so many students from various field but some of them have not their personal
android phone. Some students have android phone but they have not mail ID and have
internet problem.
Most of the students were interested so I enjoyed the work a lot.

The first chart is about reading, as student’s hobby. Here most of the students include
reading as their hobby but this 8.1% student doesn't like reading. They mentioned it
clearly which shows that they accept the fact that they haven't like reading. Here this
acceptance is not an easy thing, us needs more courage to accept this type of reality.
Other side, who say 'yes', may be they also don’t like reordering though they say 'yes'
means they have not courage to accept reality.
Most of the students goes with the option enjoyable, but in real sense it us enjoyable or
not? Are they really enjoying reading or do it as sake of doing. The green mark of the
answer which is not in chart shows that somewhere and somehow students like to read
something.

This chart mentioned that most of the students are using both, online source and books.
Only7.9%students who use online source for reading rather than books.
In this chart, students use mist of the books for reading rather than e book or some
important websource. There are some important news in newspaper and article in
magazine also which helps students for education.

Here students mentioned that they are searching material online. Here some of them
not searching material online means they are using more books rather than internet for
educational purposes.
Here 83.1% students found that the material they read on Google is really exam
oriented. But 16.9%students doesn't think that this is not helpful for exam. But I want to
say that there may be the mistake in their searching because Google have all the
information.

In this chart most of the students goes with the point that online material is helpful but
somewhere and somehow they need books also.
If we came to the another question that where students actually like to spend their
money , the answer goes with both, means they are spending their money for book and
for entertainment.

83.6%means moth of students like to read another things also. Other side 16 4%
student goes with option 'No' means they are reading only that material which is in their
syllabus.
In this chart most of the students goes with short stories which shows the area od
interest of students.
Conclusion:-
So most of the students still like to read book rather than e book or other web
source by reference of chart no 3 and 4. They are searching material online but still
there is the mentality of students that education could be doesn’t with pen and paper
only. By the end of this conversation on the topic of reading habit of students we say
that still in 21st century, the idea of digital school or college is far away from students
mind.
2. Project on tablet using survey
-Disha Gediya
During my M.A. with English, in Department of English MKBU,I have done one survey
on use of the tablet by students. I had chosen many students from various fields who
had got the tablet by Government. My target was a hostel and particular students who
get the tablet.

My Experience:-
The experience of this survey is worse rather than good. When I had started to do this
survey I had came to know about the mentality of students for using tablets in
education.
Most of them have no information that how to use Tablet for education purpose. All
students used it only for entertainment and chatting.
I had started by hostel students who got the tablet in 2019, and explain them that why I
am doing this, what my task here is etc. Most of them have not Gmail account and also
don't know how to create it.
I had tried to convince people in my task that they may take the interest in my work but I
was fail to do that and at first attempt I had got only 7 responses from students. This
makes me very disappointed.
Problem:-
The problem I had faced during this work was that most of the students have not
interested in this type of work. Some of the students said that they had send it to their
home and not using it now. There were total 3 student who send it at their home and not
using this. Many of them behave rudely also and when I visit them for this, they had
shut the door without listening me that what I am telling, why I am doing this .
Researcher's problem:-
By this survey I came to know about researcher's problem that how they were suffered
from ignorance by people. I think that's why India's most of the people are not interested
in research work because of the disappointment and rejection for answer by people.
Not used in Colleges:-
By this survey I came to know about the thing that in most of the colleges, teachers or
professors were not allowing them to use Tablet on classroom. They are using it only in
break time or free time but not in class.
Then what is the purpose of giving the tablet to students?

Second try:-
By this disappointment I had tried again for more responses but some of them were not
present at that time or some of them again not responded.
Third try:-
Then I had chosen another idea and send the form to my cousin who is professor in
Science College. He had sent the form to his students who got the Tablet by
Government and by this I got responses from students. This all tries shows that my Plan
B was not ready so I had faced this type of problems.
At last when sir send the link in both the class of my department, student think that they
have to reply of this survey form also and they have started to give reply. In the form
there was lacking of the sentence that this is only for them who have got tablet by
Government because my target was only for hostel survey and for particular chosen
students.
Student’s response:-
Here the red area shows that they are the students who have not get tablet. As above I
mentioned that they were replying by misunderstanding.

Here 8.1% students think that the idea of tablet distribution is not good. I think they are
not ready to learn the subject with technology and still want to learn with pen and paper.
Here most of the students choose that they are using tablet for educational purpose ,
but when I meet to some of them , they were clearly saying that they were not use it for
educational purposes then why they select firs option? This leads me to think that
are they answered truly or just for showing that they are using it for educational
purposes.

In this chart, i think this 69.4% students can learn the use of technology in class for
educational purposes because their teacher allows them to use it in class. These 30.6%
students will not get the information about how to use Tablet for educational purposes
because their teacher don't allow it in class.
Here these 2.7% students are still not ready for use of technology in educational
purposes. Still they have desire to learn with pen and paper.

, they choose 1st option that they are searching more reading resources rather than
other materials or videos.
Here this 73% students are ready for learn the subject with technology but this 24.3%
are still in confusion that they can't say about learning with technology is helpful for
students brightest future.3%are totally agree with the point that with technology
students can't learn so they choose 2nd option.

3. Field work: Assembly line and its effect

The term assembly line was included in mass production. It is also called Progressive assembly.
It is a manufacturing process in which parts are added from workstation to workstation until the
final assembly or final product produced. Things are produced automatically with the help of
huge machines in a very drastic manner.
Let us discuss one story with reference to Assembly line
Quality by John Galsworthy
Quality is a story about an honest shoe maker Mr. Gessler. He is dedicated to his work and spent
all his time working whenever he received any order of making boots. When he was in work, he
never worries about sleep and food. He has high moral value as an artist. He thinks that it was his
duty to make best and to give satisfaction with his product to the consumer. He believes in
Quality product. He never thinks of making more porfit with his work. To achieve more profit is
not his goal. He is different from the other craftsman who never allows their customer to
question them. Mr. Gessler easily accepts his fault and tried his best to fix it. If customer come
with dissatisfaction then he politely take it and convince customer to make it best.
When the bigger shop came in competition Mr. Gessler never gave up. He made boots to comfort
the customer. As an artist he show respect to his art and never loses the quality of product just to
compete with bigger Shops.
Death of Craftsmanship
Now a days with the formation of Assembly lines, death of Craftsman occur. The huge machines
are destroying the soul of craft. In this way Craftman's pride is vanishing.

Interview with shoemaker
Generally we have asked three questions whose answer is totally different as per our expectation.
Questions are:-
1. After the influence of competitive shoe making industry, which type of change come in their
business?
2. Are you believe in making Quality product or Profit making product?
3. Would you believe that Industry destroy Craftsmanship?
The First shoe maker
The first shoe maker is old person. He is running his business since 20 Years. He is very porud
about his quality materials. He says that Industrial development never affect his shop. He is
getting same profit as he used to get. He never faces any change.
As we don’t know that he is lying or not just to hide his poverty. He didn’t want to show his bad
condition to us. That’s why he only speaks goody-goody things. There we find self respect in
him that he never like himself to be presented as Piet.
He says one good thing that the customers who used to buy shoes from his shop earlier are still
buying, because he makes his customer satisfied.
He was even in support of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that in his rule there
would be no worries and problem to them.
We are not getting him clearly anyway.
The second Tradesman

He is quiet young and running his shop since six months. He very politely gave all the answers
of our questions.
He also didn’t hesitate to give his name, whereas the first one say no clearly to give name.
When we ask about his shop that whether he is getting more profit or less after the competitive
industry then he replied that he is facing 10% loss. He didn’t get that much profit. We have asked
him that whether he is doing anything or not to compete with Machine made Boots, he clearly
says no. But one thing he says that he is putting his products on sale to attract more and more
consumers.
He also says that his focus was on Profit not on quality product.
Difference
Here we find difference in the thinking of Shoemaker and Tradesman and their way of dealing
with customers. Here is the reverse situation or we can say that truth remains hidden.
Conclusion
So the conclusion is with the developing assembly lines still some craftsman spirit was not dead.
Still there are peoples who value the handmade craft rather than machine made final product. If
there is no change in the quality product of things then there must be no bad effect.
Therefore in Modern times the situation that England is facing due to the development of
Industries is still not compared fully with our country.
But still handmade things are limited. It couldn't made mass production in short span of time. It
need more time whereas Machines needs less hour and can made more products. Therefore it can
deals with the increasing demand of the consumers day by day.
Movie Review
As a student of English Literature, watching movies are not the purpose of an
entertainment, it is about to analyse it from various perspectives. The students of
English Department MKBU 2017-2019 has reviewed
some of the movies here.
1.Charlie Chaplin;
-Charmi Vyas
The Great dictator is a political satire comedy drama.
This film written, directed and produced by Charlie

Chaplin, this was Charlie's first true sound film. This film was released on 1940
during world war second. In this movie we can see the situation during modern
time. In this film Charlie Chaplin was in double role. He was soldier and also
Dictator.
This film first focus on the situation of war between two nations. Also this thing
shows the strength of army and conditions of soldiers. During war Chaplin saved
life of one army officer. During that time his plane was crash and he lost his
memory of 20 years. He behaves like he was a barber. So this thing shows us that
because of war how situation become difficult for the soldiers. War happens not
because for nation but because the ego of power. Power plays vital role behind
every war.
This film was the best example of political satire. In this film shows how political
leaders behave in front of the public. In this film Hynkel was political leader. In
his speech he talked about motherland, liberty and Humanity. He was whipping
during his speech. So it was all fake things. People were control under him. He told
to clap so all should clap for him. When he said to be silent so all should silent.
Hynkel was playing with balloon of Globe it symbolize that how this political
leaders think about others. They don't care about others they only wanted
to become powerful. Like a game for him to ruled over the world. He wanted to
become Dictator of the world. My favorite speech of Charlie Chaplin in movie
THE GREAT DICTATOR. As per my opinion it is very powerful speech ever
given. I strongly recommend you listen to entire thing. Its really great massage to
humanity.
2.Sense and Sensibility;
-Krishna Patel
Sense and Sensibility is a American film which is directed by Ang Lee and it is
based on Jane Austen's 1811 novel. The film was released on December 13, 1995,
in the United States. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, member of a wealthy
English family. This film shows how women in upper class Georgian England,
though privileged, had relatively few choices in life. It raises a conflict in love that
is typical of the comedy of manners, and it resolves the anxieties of its heroines in
a pleasing, if unremarkable, way. At the end, Edward proposes to and marries
Elinor. Edward becomes a vicar under the patronage of Colnel Branden, whom

then rides away. This movie creates a buzz of excitement around the Dashwood

terrorists attacks in Uri, surprisingly they
enters in military camp and shoots our army means, so India plans to gives answer
with surgical strikes.
In the film, Para SF military major vihaan Singh sherglil leads the operation of the
Indian army - 2016 The Surgical strikes. He is trains all commandos. He is full of v
confidence, positive, brave, rebellious and excellent in planning but without help
of eshan (lvan Sylvester Rodriguez), who makes machine looks like grad (eagle
type). By help of this machine Indian army able to see all activities of terrorist in
Pakistan.
Manish chodhary and rukshar's characters also played vital role, without their help
mission can't be successful because at the last movement they gives information to
Govind Bhardwaj (Paresh Rawal) that Pakistan army came to know about their
plan so vihan suddenly changes the plan and finally they wins and mission Uri the
surgical strikes became successful.

lagaan is a epic movie by ashutosh gowariker and
he direct history. 104 year ago, mohun bagan's
real life lagaan moment changed Indian history,
the peasant farmers against the oppressive British
Empire. Who challenged villagers to a game of
cricket to avoid the taxes. One game to change
their destiny.
Patriotism:
In this film patriotism is there in "Bhuvan"
character but captain Russell challenged to play cricket in order to 3 year not pay
lagaan. But the other way we see that this challenge not only for lagan but at
Bhuvan side he describe with the patriotism to play game and win against British
raj.
Love Triangle:
In this movie we see the triangle love between Bhuvan, Gouri and Elizabeth. start
movie with the Bhuvan and gouri love each other than Elizabeth come between
them and start with the teach cricket and after 2-3 days Elizabeth like Bhuvan, She
tells that love in English but Bhuvan can't understand that language at Bhuvan side
he see as a helper to teach about cricket. Last scene describes Bhuvan become

5. Matilda

stars Mara Wilson, Rhea Permanent, Embeth Davidtz and

Matilda, who uses telekinesis to deal with her parents,
who do not value education, and Agatha Trunchbull, the
oppressive principal of Crunchem Hall Elementary
School. The film was released in the United States on August 2, 1996.
Matilda Wormwood is an exquisite and intelligent little girl. Unfortunately,

  • 6. 6 From the desk of the Head of the Department: Prof. Dr. Dilip Barad The Memorabilia 2018-19 reminds the sense of an ending. Julian Barnes has rightly said that the sense of an ending is one of the most curious senses. There are ‘senses’ which are very crucial for human beings. The senses like ‘common-sense’ is necessary to understand worldly affairs when our academic sense fails to unlock the enigmatic life. Similarly, ‘civic-sense’ makes us responsible and accountable citizens of the democracy. Likewise, ‘academic- sense’ guides us in using lessons learned in academia at right time and right place. Unlike these senses, political senses is not much valued and talked about. However, for the citizens who are eligible for casting their votes in democracy, this sense is as inevitable as any other. Bertolt Brecht has equated this with literacy and told very boldly that the worst illiterate is the political illiterate. s/he hears nothing, sees nothing, takes no part in political life . . . and does not seem to know that all citizens life depends on political decisions. Among all these senses, it is ‘historical sense’ which makes a huge difference. In T.S. Eliot’s words - the historical sense involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence. The historical sense will help in better perception of zeitgeist of our time and space. It is this sense which differentiates people from sheople (sheep + people). We, at Department of English, while teaching English studies, makes an attempt to see that students develop these senses and become more sensible towards their personal lives as well as our society. Coming back to the sense of an ending, the most curious sense of all these high-profile senses. When we get towards the end of two years, when a batch full of students are passing out – some curious feelings engulf and numbs our senses. No! It is not this Keatsian ‘my heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains’ – sort of sense of an ending. It means an end of any likelihood of change in the life. We work very hard and we expect a sort of progressive, positive, and constructive metamorphosis among those with whom we so passionately get involved. At the end of the year, the sense of an ending engulfs. This Memorabilia 2018-19 is nothing but a sort of pensive of all those wonderful memories. It is like that Time-Turner device made by Ministry of Magic in J K Rowling’s Potter series. It is like the Time Machine of H. G. Wells. Turning pages of this memory- booklet is like unwinding the time in Time-Turner or travelling back in the Time Machine. All credit for this sort of meticulous record keeping goes to the Documentation Committee. It is really tough task. However, social media like Facebook is helping a lot to them in keeping records. It was always satisfying to read their posts in the happenings with an interesting write- up and a few photos. It is even more satisfying to revisit all those ‘happenings’ in this Memorabilia, again.
  • 7. 7 When I look back at the quality of students who are passing out, I see that these students were a bit quicker in adapting to technology than the previous batches. These students have surprised me on several occasions. From presenting their work in digital form to working on online surveys, or preparing certificates with mail-merge feature, or collecting data, or working in collaboration, or even this Memorabilia itself . . . . With almost professional precision, they used assistive technology. I hope the digital skills they have acquired and honed are going to be very vital in their future career and life. Another unique feature perceived in this batch was their courage and confidence to speak-up and voice their happiness as well as angst and anxiety. Many of them wrote and some even published good poems, short stories, social media posts and blogs. This was the batch on which we worked very hard to improve their English language. Not that these students were very poor in English language. They possessed normal English language skills which is common with all other batches. However, this time we were able to spare time for remedial classes, answer-writing workshops and academic writing workshops. In a way, this batch is fortunate to have many sessions of improving academic English writing skills. Some of them have learned it and displayed the improvement in their writings also. It is a tradition that most of the activities are carried out by students of the Department. They are divided in various committees and those willing to lead become natural leaders. Every year, apart from regular co-curricular activities, some unique activities are also planned by these committee members. This year, • the Library committee planned a visit of Barton Library. This library is historically very important site for all book lovers, • the ICT committee organised workshop for P.G. students of all departments and exposed them to basic digital tools. The entire workshop was conducted by senior students and even the resource persons were members of ICT committee, • the Film Screening committee organised watching Hindi film Uri – The Surgical Strike in the cinema theatre, • the Art and Creativity committee organised various competitions on the occasion of Guru Purnima and made digital display of short stories, paintings, poems, photographs and rangoli and winners were selected by online public voting system, • the Celebration committee celebrated International Day of Yoga at Department, • the credit of maximum participation in Sports and Adventure activities goes to the Sports and Recreation committee, • the Gardening committee carried out projects to support Swacch Bharat / Clean India campaign, • the Daily Schedule committee organised some very courageous debates on challenging issues like Pulwama Terror Attack, Adultery Act section 497 of IPC, LGBT Act section 377 of IPC.
  • 8. 8 All members of the committee from Semester 4 and 2 are appreciated for these unique activities. We know that all humans are not similar. Neither are we born to do similar things in life, nor are we supposed to think alike. We all are unique and the uniqueness shall be maintained, irrespective of what-so-ever-life offers us. In spite of this, the fact remains that this rule does not apply to leaders. The leaders are supposed to be different from other people. The uniqueness of leaders lies in the fact that they are ready to merge and assimilate with one and all. That’s the sure way to lead the people. There is a famous quote ascribed to Bruce Lee: “Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” Leader are supposed to be like water. It is glad to see that without knowing all these things most of you have displayed these characteristics. Be with it. In future, you may unlearn many things and relearn also. But do not unlearn these characteristics of leadership which you have acquired by being so – water like! Lastly, keep reading literature. Great readers make for great leaders! Reading literature ripens our maturity. The emotional, intelligence, spiritual, creativity, adversity, and physical quotients (EQ, IQ, SQ, CQ, AQ, PQ of literature students / readers are much higher and deeper than students of any other subjects / discipline. At the same time, I would like to suggest to watch as many films as you can. In this year, we have seen the rise of web streaming services. It has opened new vistas for acquiring all these quotients which altogether makes for literary quotients and literary sensibility. If one wants to put it in arithmetic equation, it shall have an integer of multiplication. So, it can be – LQ = IQ x EQ x SQ x CQ x AQ x PQ. In addition, L = B + eB + F + YT + WS +TV, wherein Literature is equal to books, eBooks, films, YouTube, Web Steaming and Television. Do not nurture bias against these mediums. We have learnt so many things in the Deptartment of English. It cultivates habit of thinking in our mind. Every student might have the knowledge and information but in which direction this knowledge should be use it might not be known by them, hence the Department has given them the right direction to find their destination. We spend more time in the Department than our home, so for us it is very difficult to leave.
  • 20. 20 In real sense ‘Everyday is Sunday’ in our department because we enjoy each and every day without any type of regret. We love to attend lectures of our beloved professor Dr. Dilip Barad, it doesn’t matter how long the lecture is, sometimes it takes full day but we enjoy thoroughly. One of the best lessons that we learn from Dilip Barad sir is keep plan B ready. Whatever the circumstances are, the show must go on. Therefore, we have to keep plan b ready to deal with any situations. The Department prepared us to face all sorts of challenges in life, we have learnt to overcome fears like stage fear, participation in any events and activities without hesitation. In our Department we share our ideas in daily schedule which make us mentally strong and help build confidence. The Department taught us how to organize events and it gives the freedom to students to call and arrange talk with intellectual personality from any field. For instance, Kavitaba Gohil invited well known author Bhupendrasinh Raol who talked about his book “Rasaynik Geeta” and also Mahirpari Goswami invited Rajnish Tomar who enhanced our knowledge of GPSC and UPSC. We express our gratefulness towards our beloved Head of the Department Dr. Dilip Barad who taught us important lessons of the life and role of literature to shape us from sheeple to independent-thinking-human-beings. We already know how to use technology but after two years of the Department we have learnt how to integrate it for academic purpose. “True teachers use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross; then, having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own.” We are also thankful to Dr.Heenaba Zala and Vaidehi Hariyani for their great support in learning. Documentation Committee Hema Goswami & Abul Abedi “In order to carry a positive action We must develop here a vision” Documentation is an important aspect of accountability which not only provides record of the work being done but also recognizes efforts and reinforces the system. In any field there should be documentation which keeps the event alive for longer period of time. In the era of digitalization people don’t believe without any kind of proof that’s why we need to documents things. In academic field it is necessary to record all the things which will show you the chart of the progress of particular field. For example, In India from very ancient time there is one beautiful place “Valley of flower” which is not known to everyone until it was search and documented by British mountaineers Frank S. Smythe, Eric Shipton and RL. Holdsworth. Then people started to research the “Valley of Flower”. So in this way documentation help us to know about particular thing with proof. English Department used to celebrate numerous events, activities throughout the year. So, function of documentation committee is to record all the events and activities in the form of Blog and Facebook post with appropriate images. It also motivates student to participate in academic and non-academic activities because social platform is used by everybody. In this way the world will know about our departmental activities and the progress of students. We are using Facebook for documenting academic and non-academic events. This is very useful digital platform because we can download images at anytime and

All students of our department have their personal blog account in which they are writing their experience, movie review, thinking activity etc. and share on Google plus, Facebook, Whatsapp. Introvert students also find platform to share their thoughts. There are various committees in our department like Daily Schedule, Library, Film screening, Sports and Recreation, Art and Creativity etc. The mother of all committees is “Documentation Committee” which documents all the creative activity of various committees. This Memorabilia plays a vital role in preserving all sweet memories. This year various events celebrated at Department of English. With the celebration of International Yoga day we started our new semester. Ph.D viva, student’s participation in National and International conferences, Aishvaryam youth festival is common every year. Other celebrations like kite festival, Navratri festival, Christmas, Gurupunam, Republic and Independence Day etc also celebrated in our Department. Idea of this competition is given by Mehul Dodiya. In this competition students had explored their creativity. There are many sub-competitions conducted on Guru Purnima Competition. There is no boundary and restriction for participation, Because Art has no barriers. In second term we had women’s day special theme celebration. There is Dress Code of Blue and Pink and also student’s given their art forms and we had Exhibition on Bulletin Boards. Before we (Batch: 2017- ’19) set feet in the Department of English, MKBU. It was the Celebration Committee who was celebrating Sports Day. Prof. Dilip Barad won above 40 Lawn Tennis Singles and Doubles tournament and represented Bhavnagar district at Gujarat State level in Khel Mahakumbh. There are so many other players who have contributed a lot in building this committee. Like Kavitaba – Squash, Dharaba–Table Tennis, Reena, Urvashi, Dhaval – Tennis. However, these all things would have been not possible without one person. Yes, Dr Dilip Barad, who keeps providing a unique role model for all. Who leads from the front, who knows backing very well – most important thing in building a player so, now we are hopefully looking forward to the new/ energetic / kinetic generation to carry out their game spirit forward. It is possible that as a ‘captain ‘we might not fulfilled the expectations of a ‘coach.’ We accept that we are unfeathered, though it will help us in future life. 6. ICT Committee Ramiz Solanki & Zankhna Matholiya Literature and science have always been at conflict, but in the department of English things are different. In department both literature and science walks together keep hand in hand. The second decade of this century is of information and technology and communication, these are inseparable parts of studies. In department of English students get chance to use various communicative tools to stay connect and to study with the world. Our Professor and Mentor, Dr. Dilip Barad makes us habituated with ICT. He possesses profound knowledge of technology and with his irrevocable intention of

We make use of various tools while studying literature. There are different committees in department for different purpose. ICT committee is one of them which take care of ICT tools like projectors, language lab, Music system, laptops and of internet connections. From the very first day in the department students are introduced with online entrance test to get admission in the department of English. Department is very progressive in matter of using and integrating technology in learning environment. One of the advantages of studying in this department is that you will learn many things regarding technology and web tools which are very helpful in teaching and learning process. It is because of our teacher Dr.Dilip Barad that we are able to use laptops and language lab. Computers and laptops are in ample numbers that all students can work. ⇨ Department is facilitated with language lab. It has laptop bank that students can use. In laptop bank we have 17 laptops and 7 mini laptops. ⇨ Students make use these tools for Gmail updates ⇨ Google group activities ⇨ Online group discussion ⇨ Unit end tests ⇨ To access information from web ⇨ To prepare their assignments and publish it on www.blogger.com ⇨ To make presentation and then to share it on www.slideshare.net

Faculties make use of movie screening for the better understanding of literary texts. The most difficult responsibility of ICT committee is to set up IP addresses whenever there is a new computer is connected to Cisco, but this also worked out very well throughout last year with the great help from ICT members. First of all I would like to thanks our HOD Dr. Dilip barad that he provides such techno-Friendly environment in place like Bhavnagar. I would also like to thank Namrataba Zala, our senior and previous ICT leader and last but not the least Member of ICT committee and all classmates and also juniors for their help throughout. Without all of them, this journey of learning would have been incomplete. 7. Gardening Committee Jagruti Vasani I grow plants for many reasons: to please my soul, to challenge the elements or to challenge my patience, for novelty, or for nostalgia, but mostly for the joy in seeing them grows. -David Hobson Gardening is the practice of growing and cultivating plants as part of horticulture. The

We’ll start with the most obvious reason why cultivating plants is so important: We can’t eat, drink or breathe without them around. No plants, no life and that can’t be healthy. Daily gardening chores like watering, weeding, trellising and harvesting are great ways to augment an exercise regimen. We do all this things under the guidance of our Head of The Department Dr. Dilip Barad Sir. Your brain also benefits from time spent in the garden. Being outside in the fresh air and sunshine is an effective way to boost your mood and de-stress. It is our tradition of department to plant tree which can live longer; it’s done by new batch, which will come every year. It was really memorable day. There are various committees to do various activities throughout the year. There are in gardening committee we have 27 members of both semesters. We are celebrated gardening day two times in the whole year. In this year on 6th and 7th August, 2018 we celebrated first gardening day and we did memory tree plantation of new batch’s students and through these we also become participants of Clean India Mission and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. During those days we have done lots of work around the area of department. We painted trees by geru and lime which protect trees by trunks. Also designed the pot and cover the garden area by blocks design. Then as per our department’s tradition on Republic day after Flag Anthem we celebrated republic day as a gardening day. And after that work we take healthy snacks and cold drink which is provide by sir. There is greenery around our English Department and it’s providing us fresh air and energy. Before many years there was not a single tree but at running days, we can see it’s totally changed atmosphere of Garden. Thanks to Dilip Barad sir for this revolutionary change and give us opportunity to become a part of this grateful work. “GARDENING-THE FINE ART OF SOIL TO SOUL.”

Bulletin Board Committee Niyati Pathak & Jagruti Vasani “If you not willing to learn no one can help you If you are determined to learn no one can stop you” Bulletin board is the mirror of any institution which shows x-ray image of student’s ability of creation and expression, which runs with contribution of student’s creativities. In our Department of English, students share their various work like Poems, Drawings, short stories, Articles etc. Also bulletin board contains memories in form of collage which reminds us memories of previous batches. So it is not just part of traditions but also it preserves all memories. Some students may have hidden talent but little bit, to speak and stand. But here are more things to share and enthusiasm Shawn by our students’ .they share with us many creative activities throughout the year. As per we had celebrated many special days like for example: women’s Day , Christmas Day , Republic day, Independence day ,Gurupurnima celebration , accordingly we organized things for bulleting . So that we can share things like what is happen in our department, co-curricular activities. It was a great experience for us in this year because from this year Dilip barad sir has gave opportunity that we had 2 leaders in each committee. So, at the result of that we have done our best. At the end of the journey we would like to thanks to our active members and specially Disha Gediya , Vipul dabhi, Zankhana Matholiya , Krishna Patel , Jeel vyas, Mehul Dodiya, for active participation and helping throughout the year without you this journey as leader is incomplete .at last but not least we also thankful to Pro.   • 35. 35 9. Library Committee Reena Khasatiya & Jyotiba Gohil J. K Rowling says on library that, when in doubt go to the Library. But, now-a-days library does not mean only books lying there. “A modern library with e-books and with internet where you can find answers of your all questions” Department of English MKBU, though it is arts department, it is known as techno friendly department. It makes very effective use of technology. Not only laptop bank and free Wi-Fi, Department got its own library too. Our Department's library made for the ease of students so that time and again they don't have to go to the central library for books. We have more than 1000 books in our library related to our syllabus and English literature. Apart from that we have SCOPE books and CDs, self help kind books, NET-SET books, magazines and thesis. Our head of Department, Dr. Dilip Barad has also his own library in his office. That also student can use for their reading purpose. Along with that Dept. has its own Reading room for reader in that we have different magazines, research paper and thesis. As the tradition of Department every year each committee member got new leader for committee. Senior passes responsibilities on Junior's shoulder. In that what is the responsibility one should fulfilled as leader of library committee? As leader of library one should be careful for books, availability of books for all students, to inform students about reference books related to syllabus and remember the borrow and issues date and in the whole year several visit of various libraries. It is great experience of being a Committee leader along with Jyotiba Gohil. From the very first day of semester 3, I try to be faithful to my leadership or responsibility to Dept.’s library. We can’t deny students for books at any time.
  • 36. 36 Despite this, this year we made few changes in libraries cupboards position and numbering of books for that I would be thankful for my juniors who took great pain of work. Traditionally we used to visit central library of our University but along with this year we also visit Barton library of Bhavnagar. At the end, to possess a key of library doesn’t mean one become an owner of knowledge for that everyone must read …read…and…read. Jyotiba Gohil's experience as a library leader As a leader for me it was good experience. For a leader it will never easy to lead the people. As a leader I can't do anything all alone. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” ― John C. Maxwell Department is an institution and like all other institutions in the world, it also needs to assemble and meet every day to carry out all of its functions; therefore here, in the department, a day starts with a bunch of activities, known as a “Daily schedule”. To make the day auspicious we start our daily schedule with the chanting of University song and then prayer. Then the next column is “thought of the day”, which not only make students aware of the great thoughts and ideas of the world but also teaches how to use it in life. One must know what is happening around oneself. It is very important for oneself to take necessary measures at the right time so here students came up with the idea of Newspaper reading. The habit of reading newspaper not only enhance our knowledge but also improves accuracy and fluency, it proves questioning which helps in generating ideas and inspires to think. It is a kind of exercise, which gives an insight into the world around.
  • 37. 37 Albert Einstein a famous thinker once said that a person who learns a word a day is smarter and wise than rest so therefore we have a column known as “Vocabulary drill”. It actually drills out the frozen minds of learners and helps them to learn new vocabulary with the examples from day to day life. The fifth column of DS is Poetry recitation in which student presents English poetry. Opinion building is the column through which all the leaders of various committees inform and notify students about upcoming events. It is also the column from where the songs of rules and regulations sung over time. Furthermore, Personal presentation is the column, which gives a platform to present personal views of the participant. Regional literature allows all the type of literature from all the languages. Here students cultivate a habit of reading books as well as watching movies and then they come up with reviews of it. The last columns are Humour of the day and the National song. After DS sir gives the review about the performance of the students, which encourages the confidence level of students. Benefits of participating in Ds Participating in Ds helps to improve Academic as well as Non-academic knowledge in students. It helps to overcome stage fear and boost up confidence level. It stretches on LSRW skills and encourages community involvements. Therefore, learning happens everywhere, not just in the classroom. Daily schedule committee not only limited to department activity but also organize some charity events like A Blood Donation camp. Interestingly enough, the texts usually considered as children’s literature by popular critics and readers are often full of political agendas, socio- religious conflicts as well as scientific discoveries. One of the most popular children’s literature texts, which fascinated a whole generation of kids, at home and abroad, is the Harry Potter series. Today, it would be hard to find a kid who, if not read, but hasn’t watched the cinematic version of this particular work by J.K Rowling. “How Harry Cast his Spell” explains why the books meet our longing to experience the truths of life, love, and death; help us better understand life and our role in the universe; and encourage us to discover and develop our own gifts and abilities (Granger). The fact that magic, can be a medium for someone to establish an identity and that it is an equally respectable field of study, is something quite unconvincing for a religion which has always condemned wizards and witches and has portrayed them as the personifications of ‘evil’. And therefore, “Baptizing Harry Potter” becomes an important text by offering a monk’s take on Harry Potter series (Bell). This paper mainly focuses on the deconstruction of the philosophy ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, the main purpose is to show that this philosophy can’t be applied in modern times especially in the country like India. I have been applied Social, Political and Psychological aspects as well as taken movies like ‘Nayak’, ‘Baghban’, and ‘Aarakshan’ as reference to make my arguments more stronger. Report of Survey on ELT Activity to examine the reading habit of students -Disha Gediya Introduction During my M.A. with English in Department of English MKBU,I have done one survey on Reading habit of students. I had made one survey form and started the survey. My Experience:- First I had visit MSC students who behaved well with me. Then I had visit different field's students like BSC students, B.ed students, B.A. students,MSW Students, B.com students, BBA Students etc.they also gave me well response on this. Most of them were interested in this survey because they found some new things like education with technology in the survey. Behave politely and gave the response very honestly. Most of them have question that why I am doing this?and I answered them that this is my task and for that I am doing this. Some of them were also asking about privacy of their gmail because they have fear that suppose I will make misuse of their ID but I have given the surety to them that this is only for my task and I will never misuse it. I had met so many students from various field but some of them have not their personal android phone. Some students have android phone but they have not mail ID and have internet problem. Most of the students were interested so I enjoyed the work a lot. Student’s response:-
  • 47. 47 The first chart is about reading, as student’s hobby. Here most of the students include reading as their hobby but this 8.1% student doesn't like reading. They mentioned it clearly which shows that they accept the fact that they haven't like reading. Here this acceptance is not an easy thing, us needs more courage to accept this type of reality. Other side, who say 'yes', may be they also don’t like reordering though they say 'yes' means they have not courage to accept reality. Most of the students goes with the option enjoyable, but in real sense it us enjoyable or not? Are they really enjoying reading or do it as sake of doing. The green mark of the answer which is not in chart shows that somewhere and somehow students like to read something.

In this chart, students use mist of the books for reading rather than e book or some important websource. There are some important news in newspaper and article in magazine also which helps students for education.

Here some of them not searching material online means they are using more books rather than internet for educational purposes. Here 83.1% students found that the material they read on Google is really exam oriented. But 16.9%students doesn't think that this is not helpful for exam. But I want to say that there may be the mistake in their searching because Google have all the information.

If we came to the another question that where students actually like to spend their money , the answer goes with both, means they are spending their money for book and for entertainment.

Other side 16 4% student goes with option 'No' means they are reading only that material which is in their syllabus. Conclusion:- So most of the students still like to read book rather than e book or other web source by reference of chart no 3 and 4. They are searching material online but still there is the mentality of students that education could be doesn’t with pen and paper only. By the end of this conversation on the topic of reading habit of students we say that still in 21st century, the idea of digital school or college is far away from students mind. 2. Project on tablet using survey -Disha Gediya During my M.A. with English, in Department of English MKBU,I have done one survey on use of the tablet by students. I had chosen many students from various fields who had got the tablet by Government. My target was a hostel and particular students who get the tablet.
  • 52. 52 My Experience:- The experience of this survey is worse rather than good. When I had started to do this survey I had came to know about the mentality of students for using tablets in education. Most of them have no information that how to use Tablet for education purpose. All students used it only for entertainment and chatting. I had started by hostel students who got the tablet in 2019, and explain them that why I am doing this, what my task here is etc. Most of them have not Gmail account and also don't know how to create it. I had tried to convince people in my task that they may take the interest in my work but I was fail to do that and at first attempt I had got only 7 responses from students. This makes me very disappointed. Problem:- The problem I had faced during this work was that most of the students have not interested in this type of work. Some of the students said that they had send it to their home and not using it now. There were total 3 student who send it at their home and not using this. Many of them behave rudely also and when I visit them for this, they had shut the door without listening me that what I am telling, why I am doing this . Researcher's problem:- By this survey I came to know about researcher's problem that how they were suffered from ignorance by people. I think that's why India's most of the people are not interested in research work because of the disappointment and rejection for answer by people. Not used in Colleges:- By this survey I came to know about the thing that in most of the colleges, teachers or professors were not allowing them to use Tablet on classroom. They are using it only in break time or free time but not in class. Then what is the purpose of giving the tablet to students?

Third try:- Then I had chosen another idea and send the form to my cousin who is professor in Science College. He had sent the form to his students who got the Tablet by Government and by this I got responses from students. This all tries shows that my Plan B was not ready so I had faced this type of problems. At last when sir send the link in both the class of my department, student think that they have to reply of this survey form also and they have started to give reply. In the form there was lacking of the sentence that this is only for them who have got tablet by Government because my target was only for hostel survey and for particular chosen students. Student’s response:- Here the red area shows that they are the students who have not get tablet. As above I mentioned that they were replying by misunderstanding.

Here most of the students choose that they are using tablet for educational purpose , but when I meet to some of them , they were clearly saying that they were not use it for educational purposes then why they select firs option? This leads me to think that are they answered truly or just for showing that they are using it for educational purposes.

These 30.6% students will not get the information about how to use Tablet for educational purposes because their teacher don't allow it in class. Here these 2.7% students are still not ready for use of technology in educational purposes. Still they have desire to learn with pen and paper.

It is a manufacturing process in which parts are added from workstation to workstation until the final assembly or final product produced. Things are produced automatically with the help of huge machines in a very drastic manner. Let us discuss one story with reference to Assembly line Quality by John Galsworthy Quality is a story about an honest shoe maker Mr. Gessler. He is dedicated to his work and spent all his time working whenever he received any order of making boots. When he was in work, he never worries about sleep and food. He has high moral value as an artist. He thinks that it was his duty to make best and to give satisfaction with his product to the consumer. He believes in Quality product. He never thinks of making more porfit with his work. To achieve more profit is not his goal. He is different from the other craftsman who never allows their customer to question them. Mr. Gessler easily accepts his fault and tried his best to fix it. If customer come with dissatisfaction then he politely take it and convince customer to make it best. When the bigger shop came in competition Mr. Gessler never gave up. He made boots to comfort the customer. As an artist he show respect to his art and never loses the quality of product just to compete with bigger Shops. Death of Craftsmanship Now a days with the formation of Assembly lines, death of Craftsman occur. The huge machines are destroying the soul of craft. In this way Craftman's pride is vanishing.

After the influence of competitive shoe making industry, which type of change come in their business? 2. Are you believe in making Quality product or Profit making product? 3. Would you believe that Industry destroy Craftsmanship? The First shoe maker The first shoe maker is old person. He is running his business since 20 Years. He is very porud about his quality materials. He says that Industrial development never affect his shop. He is getting same profit as he used to get. He never faces any change. As we don’t know that he is lying or not just to hide his poverty. He didn’t want to show his bad condition to us. That’s why he only speaks goody-goody things. There we find self respect in him that he never like himself to be presented as Piet. He says one good thing that the customers who used to buy shoes from his shop earlier are still buying, because he makes his customer satisfied. He was even in support of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that in his rule there would be no worries and problem to them. We are not getting him clearly anyway. The second Tradesman

But one thing he says that he is putting his products on sale to attract more and more consumers. He also says that his focus was on Profit not on quality product. Difference Here we find difference in the thinking of Shoemaker and Tradesman and their way of dealing with customers. Here is the reverse situation or we can say that truth remains hidden. Conclusion So the conclusion is with the developing assembly lines still some craftsman spirit was not dead. Still there are peoples who value the handmade craft rather than machine made final product. If there is no change in the quality product of things then there must be no bad effect. Therefore in Modern times the situation that England is facing due to the development of Industries is still not compared fully with our country. But still handmade things are limited. It couldn't made mass production in short span of time. It need more time whereas Machines needs less hour and can made more products. Therefore it can deals with the increasing demand of the consumers day by day. In the film, Para SF military major vihaan Singh sherglil leads the operation of the Indian army - 2016 The Surgical strikes. He is trains all commandos.
