Getting into a Fraternity or Sorority
College is something everyone dreams about while in high school. It may seem fun and exciting, but
there is a tremendous number of mistakes that can happen. For instance, imagine someone has just
been accepted into college, and it is her first day. She thought it was a dream to be in a sorority, but
in reality it was a nightmare. After a week, she knows "Hell Week" is coming, but she wants shake
everything off, and think everything is going well and the other members will accept her with no
hesitation. Today is a lazy day, and she is just sitting in her dorm watching television, and out of
nowhere, she was blindfolded and thrown into a car. Her fellow frat members start to beat her with
random objects, and they say harsh words to break her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Laws). Have you ever wondered why they do not have hazing laws? No one truly knows why they
do not have the laws. As some people think, hazing is a great thing, and it puts people through a
great experience to go through. Since hazing can endanger the physical safety of a person, and
produces mental, physical discomfort, and causes dismay, humiliation, and dehumanizes an
individual, society needs to learn about hazing and stop it from happening. We know that people
consider it a tradition that has been going on for ages, but it's an appalling experience to go through.
Everywhere around the world hazing is happening and not one person can do a thing about it. The
earliest recorded event of hazing occurred in eighteen thirty–eight. The first recorded death
happened in eighteen forty–eight. (Hank). So you can see why some may consider it a tradition.
Many hazing incidents do not just involve members of a certain group, but sometimes it can also
include the coach or who is in charge of the group. Twenty–two percent of coaches or advisors are
involved in hazing towards the athlete or student. Many of the coaches and advisors even help
perform the hazing incidents! (Coaches). A person who you would think would be a role model to
their players involve themselves in these involuntary acts.Next time someone thinks that they have
the best coach a team can have, always remember someone can be

My Sorority Is A Discourse Community
The discourse community I have chosen is within my sorority, Delta Delta Delta (Tri Delta). There
are many stereotypes associated with Tri Delta, and that is the most irritating thing about being in a
sorority. Anyone from my high school would insist that I am not a sorority girl if someone were to
ask them. When I started my fall semester, I was not expecting to rush because once again again, I
am not the "sorority type". Greek life at Boise State is unlike any other campus. Some may think
that being in a sorority is all about social standing, parties, and being better than the people around
you. In reality, it is the exact opposite. For the rest of this paper, I am going to prove to you why Tri
Delta is a discourse community. In order to get information for my paper, I interviewed someone
with a position of authority within Tri Delta. Her name is Danielle, and she is the new member
educator. The first thing I learned about Tri Delta is that it is more than just letters on a shirt, songs
and chants, a gold pin, socials, rituals, an obligation, or a way of life. "Being in a sorority is about
learning about people and being able to give without expecting a return. Tri Delta has allowed me to
find lifelong friends and find confidence in myself as well as in my sisters," Danielle explained.
After hearing her explanation, I couldn't agree more. Danielle also told me that the close
relationships are her favorite part. "My favorite part about being in Tri Delta is the sisterhood.

Hazing And Sororities
In August of this year, hundreds of thousands of 18–year–old young men and women begin their
college careers. These students have nothing but hope and optimism as they start to venture out on
their own. As they start to meet new people, experience life on their own, and engage in a rigorous
curriculum, many students find themselves looking for a social outlet. NCAA sports, club sports,
church group, business club, architecture club, honors society, African American youth group,
Hispanic youth group and thousands of other social/professional clubs surround campus to help
students flourish in their new home. These social outlets allow for students to meet people with
similar interests and aspirations, but they also challenge students to try new ... Show more content

The techniques that are used by all fraternities and sororities are called rushing and hazing. Rushing
is the act of popularizing a given fraternity or sorority to attract new members. As mentioned in the
introduction, the alternate forms of rushing cover a large spectrum, but they all have the same goal:
be the best to attract the best. Hazing is another variable method closely aligned with fraternities and
sororities, but hazing for different fraternities and sororities can have vastly different outcomes.
Hazing, in its most simple and basic form, is the imposition of strenuous or complicated tasks as a
form of initiation. In contrast to popular belief, a lot of normal activity is considered hazing. For
example, a college football team might tell the freshman that they are responsible for cleaning up
loose garbage on the field after a practice. As mild as this example might be, hazing can be taken to
an extreme and often has poor outcomes that can severely damage the psyche of an individual.
However, a sense of tradition and continuation continually inspires hazing among social groups, but
fraternities and sororities especially. Hazing has become a form a bonding that allow new initiates to
become closer as a brotherhood or sisterhood; these two both being the most important part of
fraternities and sororities. To create an everlasting bond, Greek organizations promote ultimate a
familial intimacy that is unparalleled by other social groups. It is in this strive for brotherhood and
sisterhood that mistakes are made and people begin to

Fraternities And Sororities
Fraternities and sororities are social organizations and the colleges and universities they have been
around for a very long time. Since 2005 more than 60 people have died in fraternity related
incidents, Fraternities and Sororities now at a record of 750,000 members provide invaluable
leadership training, networking opportunities, emotional and academic support. Why should there be
greek life on campus? Because it helps with college students, it gives you a place to live on campus,
makes you feel like part of an accepted group, that is why people like it and join it.
There are some things you have to do to join a join a fraternity or a sorority. You have to say a pledge

Sorority House Research Paper
Chanting and screaming of sorority houses at Library Lawn, as new members take off running from
all different directions to their new homes. If you stopped and took it all in, you could see all
thirteen houses standing out around a stage in different themes, waiting for the new pledges. After
months of preparation of recommendation letters, resumes and shopping for the perfect outfit to
wear to each house event during recruitment, Bid Day was finally here. Today was the day that over
700 girls would run to their new home for the next four years and make bonds and friendships that
would last a lifetime.

Moving to college is huge milestone on its own, but moving to college and going through

Sorority Groups
Have you ever felt what it was like to be a part of a group? There is a wide range of groups one
could be a part of, whether it be a religious group, a group at school, a mob, a sorority or fraternity,
everyone has been a part of some type of group in their life. Being a part of a group makes one feel
important by allowing oneself to engage in tasks that could potentially benefit oneself, someone
else, or a society as a whole. Engaging in a group allows one to feel like they are making a
difference in the world and for themselves. Therefore, while being in a group is a beneficial way to
bond with others, feel a variety of different emotions, and learn new
things, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, many sorority girls feel like they have more authority and power when together, rather
than when they are not with each other. For example, in the article, "How Fraternities and Sororities
Impact Students",
Alan Reifman states that, "there may be something about people who join Greek–letter
organizations–extraversion, risk–taking, excitement–seeking, and so forth–" also, "the sense of
confidence." This idea relates to how sorority girls act differently. For example, in a sorority one
gives speeches, volunteers, and creates ideas to make their community a better place. When
together, sorority girls may have no issue volunteering and helping out the community because they
have a collection of girls by their side helping and supporting each other out. This sense of
community builds each and every girls confidence to a point where they can take on anything life
throws at them. However, when they are not with each other, one has to face the world alone, and
without the feeling of someone supporting and being there for them it can cause a sense

A Day Of Sorority Recruitment
As I walked into the glittery ballroom once again, trying my hardest to remove the white cat hair
from my black sweater, I noticed that almost everyone had heels on and ignored the Panhellenic
letter that suggested we wear "church attire." I was already nervous about having to wear an overly
conservative dress that didn`t match my style for the second day of sorority recruitment, so seeing
that everybody else looked like runway models only added to my nausea. However, when I looked
around the room I saw many girls who were didn`t fit in, like me; some who opted for slacks, some
who decided to wear no makeup, some who just didn't look like everyone else. We all had similar
demeanors: uncertain smiles, furrowed brows, and faces that were pointed straight down, as if we
were being reprimanded.
After everyone had sat down, the recruitment organizers slowly handed out envelops to every girl,
which would list the sororities that had invited them back. There was no chance that we would have
no names in our envelopes, because those girls got informed that they weren`t welcome back the
night before. So, when I opened my envelope I knew that at least one group thought I was good
enough. I had my hopes high for a certain sorority and I was pretty positive that they liked me, but I
was faced with disappointment as I opened my envelope. The one group that I felt I had "belonged"
in had rejected me, and the one group that I had dreaded were at the top of my list. Now, I was
lucky,

Hazing And Sororitys
The article that I have selected is about hazing and how it is heavily associated with greek fraternity
and sororitys across the U.S. Hazing is the act of ''any activity expected of someone that joins a
group and has the potential to humiliates, degrades, abuses, comprise safety, or inflicts pain until its
victims''(Richardson, Wang, &Hill, 2012). Hazing as a form of initation into these fratertinities and
sorriorites and the behavior is highly anticpitate and welcomed as for many it is look at as a form of
handed down tradition. Which brings us to the theory of reasoned action and it having much to do
with an individuals positive or negative feelings about performing a behavior. Many have taken on
the mindset that if you are not

Should Fraternities And Sororities Be Banned?
The question about Greek life on campus is whether if fraternities and sororities should be banned.
The reasoning behind that is because of all the sexual assault, hazing, and binge drinking happening
on campus. All of those problems are causing people to be hurt, be raped, or be killed. But if you
look into it, Greek organization does have underage members. Colleges should not ban fraternities
and sororities. Greek organizations are still relevant on today's campus. Simon Riker, a freelance
musician said, "I learned a lot about myself and other people, more than I would have otherwise...
offered me a tremendous amount of opportunities and a vast social network" (Friedman 990). Many
fraternities are involved in their communities. The fraternity and sorority would hold a fundraiser
where they would raise more than $20 million for charity. Averagely most fraternities have a slightly
higher grade–point average from just the students who are not in a fraternity. The grade–point
average is approximately 2.912 (Friedman 990). Fraternity and sorority members is more likely to
be prepared after their graduation. The percent within the Greeks and the non–Greeks on how
prepared the students are after graduation is 37 percent Greek to 27 percent non–Greek (Friedman
990). Fraternities and sororities are seen as a way to further one's career after graduation (Friedman
987). Kimbrough adds, "we have to figure out how to give them life lessons to make them better
citizens, help them

Group Interest In Joining A Sorority
Some of our group members are not interested in joining a sorority, which gave ethnocentric bias.
Since a few of us want nothing to do with this lifestyle, our ability to stay completely objective and
not include our own personal views was challenging. Conversely, some of our group members were
interested in joining SDT, which also lead to bias. Due to the different opinions on Greek life, we
believe both biases were able to counteract each other and help us remain as objective as possible.
Our informants were mostly from the same pledge class, meaning they pledged the same semester.
This could have influenced our research due to a similarity in age, viewpoint, and experience in the
sorority so far. Different observations would have been drawn

The Pros And Cons Of Sorority In College
Almost all college student have a choice to make early on in their college careers, the choice to
participate in rush for a fraternity or sorority. During rush week fraternities and sororities are
recruiting and trying to find people that they think will be a good fit to their fraternity or sorority.
Choosing to rush and trying to join a fraternity or sorority will have a lasting impact on the rest of
your college career. Choosing not to rush is a common choice of a lot of college students. Some
college students don't want to have extra things on their agenda so they don't rush, Some think that
the greek life in college is just like what they have seen in movies and they don't think it's for them
so they don't rush. There are many good reasons for a new college student to decide not to join a
fraternity or sorority, but the rest of your college career will be affected by this choice. Choosing not
to rush will give the student more freetime. Leaving you more time to study or do what you need to
do on your freetime. Not rushing is going to be overall less stressful, the new student won't have to
worry about impressing the fraternity or sorority they like, they wouldn't have to worry about the
requirements of the fraternity's or sororities. The students who decide not to go greek will have
some more alone time to meet new people and make new friends. With meeting new people and
making friends the new college student will most likely make a couple life long friendships where

Informative Speech On Sororities
Informative Speech Outline Introduction: A) You see them everywhere. Walking around proudly in
their Greek letters that they've earned, and that they have come a long way to be able to wear. They
come in all different colors such as pink and green, red and black, blue and white.... the list goes on.
Even though they wear different letters and colors, they are all a part of one thing: a sorority. B) All
of these different sororities had to come from somewhere right? C) There are over 80 sororities that
are known today, only 27 of which are not affiliated, meaning that they aren't "official" but people
still join them. D) According to usnews.com only 39% of women at The University of Alabama are
in sorority. E) Today, I am going to educate you on the origin of sororities, next, compare their
history from then until now, and the overall goal of sororities. A lot of people see the different
sorority houses and girls around their campus, but don't know where they originated from. This
brings me to my first main point. Body: Main Point 1: Sororities were originally created from the
image of fraternities. A) According to dictionary.com, a fraternity is a local or national organization
of male students, primarily for social purposes, usually with secret initiation and rites and a name
composed of two or three Greek letters. B) When Fraternities were first thought of, they had to be
kept secret. 1. They were known as secret societies and only had up to 30 members. 2. When they
finally started getting recognition, women fraternities came about. C) Sororities were originally
known as women fraternities. 1. They were known as women fraternities because that was the only
word known to describe them in the 1800s. 2. According to appstate.edu some sororities still are
required to use the word fraternity in their official name because they were already legally
incorporated and couldn't change it. 3. The first woman fraternity was called The Adelphean Society.
They were founded in 1851 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. Because of this, more women
fraternities started to surface and so it began. 4. The word sorority comes from the Latin word
"soror" meaning sister. This word was first used in 1882 by the women of Gamma

Sorority Chapters Hazing
To some fraternity and sorority chapters hazing may be a way of group bonding and teaching
respect, it is not indispensable. Hazing has been going on for quite amount of time, and banning
organization who haze will make other chapters want to inflict pain and humiliation to their own

students and strips them of their power. Studies have shown that there are in fact fraternity and

said to be. Yes it is a fun and you make friendships but, all that come with a price and that is at the

Sorority Girl: A Case Study
As a freshman at UNCW, you're starting out in a new place for the first time, and away from your
friends and family. So what do you do to make friends, you can join different clubs and
organizations around campus. In my case I found myself wanting to experience what Greek life had
to offer at UNCW. The previous knowledge I had about sororities was based of the experience of my
older sister, who went through the recruitment process twice just to find her home in a sorority. I
was told it would be a rigorous process, I would experience different feelings from exhaustion to
painfully awkward conversations. But I wanted to see for myself if this process was for me, to see if
I could into the dynamic of being a so called "sorority girl." Sorority recruitment is a timely process,
you have to dedicate on average four to five hours talking to girls about what some say as "pointless
conversations". It's kind of crazy to think about how some girls go through such great extent, just to

Personal Narrative: Sorority Recruitment
As a freshman at UNCW, I was starting out in a new place for the very first time, away from my
friends and family. So many different thoughts were running through my mind like "How do I make
friends." Maybe I could join different clubs and organizations around campus. I found myself
wanting sign up for sorority recruitment, to see what Greek life was about here at UNCW.
What previous knowledge I had about sororities was based of the experience of my older sister, who
went through the recruitment process twice to find her home in Kappa Delta at the University of
North Carolina Chapel Hill. The advice my sister gave was each school is different when it came to
Greek life, but the experience would be the same it would leave me experiencing so many different
feelings from exhaustion to painfully awkward conversations. I wanted to see for myself if this
process was for me, to see if I could see myself as being a "sorority girl."
Sorority recruitment is a timely process, you basically have to dedicate on average four to five hours
talking to a bunch of girls about who may have nothing in common with. You have to engage in
some "pointless conversations". It's kind of crazy to think about how some girls go through such
great extent, just to guarantee that they are selected into the sorority of their ... Show more content

However, that isn't how this whole thing works, the day before my orientation for recruitment I
received an email from my Gamma Chi telling us what we should wear for the five different days. I
felt this constant pressure of having to look my absolute best, just so I wouldn't feel like I was being
judged. No amount of makeup or clothing could make that feeling disappear. No matter what
anyone said to all 400 of us were feeling judged not just from the different sorority members, but

Statement Of Purpose To Join A Sorority
Coming into my freshman year of college, I knew that I wanted to get involved around campus. I
decided to join a sorority so I can get to know more people. First coming in, I just wanted to be a
part of something. I had no idea that one day I would be on council as a vice president for an
organization of over 300 people. It started with just one decision to apply for an appointed officer
position. I applied for the role of chaplain for the entire sorority. As a freshman, I knew that I was
not likely to get the position because they probably wanted older girls with more experience.
However, the spring of that year I was chosen from many applicants to be the Chaplain for a large
organization. I was very intimidated about being seen as a leader

How To Panhellenic Delegate In Sorority?
Running a chapter has many complex parts, and every one this year has done an excellent job by
playing their individual roles to allow this chapter to run smoothly. The strongest elements of our
chapter are that we have special rituals ceremonies, a standout PR design, fun sisterhood events and
formals, plus I could go on and on about how amazing our philanthropy events are. Also, Erin
Kenney has done a great job as Panhellenic Delegate. She has kept the chapter informed and has
made changes to panny point requirements that I feel will have a positive effect on this chapter.
Areas that I feel we could focus on are the operations of the chapter, new members, and external
relationships. Currently, if these parts could run more smoothly it would ... Show more content on

Which respect to panny point, what happens if girls go to more than two? I feel like we need to
evaluate the system of how we keep track of point in order to tell which girls in our chapter are
going to the most events. Once we figure out a system I think we should create some sort of
incentive to give them that way members have something to look forward to. The incentive would
be a nice way to acknowledge the members that took time to support other philanthropies and gain
us more points. Finally, the matter of Panhellenic run events, I feel like in meetings leading up to the
events someone has to ask questions like "will there be enough seats and does everyone get the same
base number of seats". If I was delegate I would be more willing to ask questions and propose
solutions. For example this year's Miss Panhellenic I would have suggested that every sorority
should already have a pre–blocked off section that Panhellenic decides and give the delegates a max
number of people that can go from each sorority that way we don't run into this problems of too
many girls showing up. I hope to fix these issues if made Panhellenic delegate.
Along with improving the chapter, I would enjoy the opportunity

Fraternities And Sororities
It is important to discuss the history behind fraternities and sororities in order to gain a full
understanding of how they can affect ways in which students interact with each other. The first
Greek letter organization was created in 1776 as a way for students to meet with each other and
discuss current events and literature. From there on, more of these groups were started at schools
around the country. It was rare to have women be appointed into one of these because of their lesser
social status. It was not until almost 100 years later that a women's organization was founded.
Because of their rich history, fraternities are more dominate than sororities and much more well–off.
In America, there is a large history of women being devalued and

The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities Essay
The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities
Joining fraternities and sororities has been a long tradition among many college and university
students within the United States. As the number of students entering colleges and universities grow,
the influence and pressure to join fraternities and sororities grow as well. According to a research
project conducted by Dr. Gary D. Malaney, associate professor of education and director of student
affairs at the University of Massachusetts, "58.6% [of 413 students surveyed] reported having at
least a few friends who belong to the Greek Area" (Malaney 2). However, the Kappa Sigma
fraternity at the University of Miami in February 2004 was found at fault for the death of Chad

Among the many fraternities in the United States, some fraternities are said to accept students after
"drinking a whole bottle of alcohol nonstop" (Brown). Flushing toilets after a current member takes
a dump, not sleeping for two days, carrying bricks in backpacks for weeks, and sexual intercourse
are some of the many shocking things new members will do to earn their way into a fraternity or
sorority. According to Kevin Brown, "you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do
to get in, and that could be anything." Some sororities "will paddle each other till their behinds are
bleeding. They will force girls to do things like boob ranking, where they're given five minutes to
examine each other's chests and rank themselves by size" (Morehouse) before getting accepted.
Clearly, fraternities and sororities often do not respect the rights, opinions and well–being of their
potential members.
For many fraternities and sororities, academics are certainly not the key methods of attracting new
members. Surprisingly, fraternities and sororities have quite an effect on student academic
performances. According to Malaney's research, only 4% of all fraternity members surveyed said
their academic performance improved while 26% claimed that their performance got worse
(Malaney 3). Among the sorority members surveyed, 6% said their academic performance

Benefits Of Pledging To A Sorority Or Fraternity
Most people when they think of college they think of majors, classes, and getting to meet new
people but others look forward to pledging to a sorority or fraternity. Pledging to a sorority or
fraternity means making a life long commitment with people who then become your said brothers
and said sisters, but with pledging comes hazing. Hazing is humiliating and, in most cases,
dangerous initiation rituals, but it is a typical thing that happens when someone pledges. Although
hazing is a tradition and has always been a part of pledging, it shouldn't be part of the process due to
multiple cases of death and the overall attitude towards it.
Hazing in fraternities and sororities has become a tradition in the United States culture for decades

Essay About Joining A Sorority
An Open Letter About Joining a Sorority To the Upcoming Freshman Who Doesn't Know if She
Should Rush, Introduction: I know exactly what you are going through. At the beginning of my
freshman year, I swore to myself that I would never join a sorority. I thought it was weird, cult–like,
and that I didn't need to pay money to have friends. However, here I am, loving and actively
participating in Delta Gamma, a sorority that was reestablished at the University of Arkansas this
year. When I first joined, I had certain expectations. I expected for me and some of the members to
be somewhat of acquaintances, but thought that most sorority girls were too self– absorbed for me to

However, if you are looking to be more connected on your college campus and to automatically
belong to a sense of community, joining a sorority is the perfect fit for you. Delta Gamma claims its
mission is to "foster ideals of friendship among women", and it is fairly clear through the public
discourse, as well as the discourse meant specifically for Delta Gamma's, that community and
friendship is something that is cherished within the organization. Joining a sorority means that you
are a part of traditions that have been around for decades, thus being connected to something bigger
than yourself. A sorority isn't just something you do for your four years in college, but it is
something that you use as a networking tool and a bond of friendship for as long as you live. It also
means having a forever snow cone run partner, new opportunities to plug yourself into, and girls
who are always there to comment how good you look on your Instagram photos. Those these things
may seem infantile, they are super important and go a long way in making you feel like you are at
home at your university, and that is the exact goal of any sorority. If any of this sounds appealing to
you, there should be no hesitation in

Fraternity And Sorority
College students have many life altering questions they must answer through the journey of further
education. From a student's major, living circumstance, classes, and getting involved on campus, it
can start to get stressful if there are mixed signals about what they are getting into. Getting involved
on campus is a great way to meet people and improve skills needed after graduation. A student
might choose to be involved in Greek life because of the parties, friends, and job application quirks
down the road (Joining a Fraternity, np). The outcome involves those things, but it also involves
leadership traits, lifelong relationships, the ability to surpass the negative public perception of
Fraternity and Sorority men and women, and keep up good grades. While involved in Greek life,

If a student does not have that certain GPA requirement they get dropped from recruitment before
the chapter even considers looking at anything else. Students must maintain a certain GPA to stay in
the chapter. Most fraternities or sororities have weekly study groups. My chapter has a Geek of the
Week, which goes to whoever makes the highest grades on major tests. If a student's GPA drops
under a certain score, then they have to have a certain amount of study hours or note checks until
their grade goes back up. If their GPA is so low for a long amount of time they might get kicked out
of the fraternity or sorority. Students knowing that they have to keep their grades up for a fraternity
or sorority could help them graduate. "A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those
who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non–fraternity/sorority persons
graduate" (Fraternity and Sorority Facts, np). Fraternities and sororities are helping their members

Sororities In The Odyssey
Like many traditions, the idea of sororities and fraternities are a common present day tradition.
Sororities and fraternities act as a home away from home and as a family away from family. These
social clubs try their best to follow in their past sisters or brothers footsteps. Similarly, the author of
The Odyssey, Homer, expresses the Greeks are motivated by their obligation to appease their gods.
As a result, the author communicates the importance of religion within Greek society and the
traditions that follow. Throughout The Odyssey, the value of traditions is emphasised through the
numerous customs that are follows strictly in the mythological era. The Greeks are portrayed to be

Poseidon, still angered about Odysseus' actions on his son, is not okay with Odysseus' safe return

Poseidon bewails to Zeus about being crossed and soon "strikes [the Phaeacians ship] to stone,

Informative Speech : Joining A Sorority
Informative Speech
Joining a sorority is not just four for years but for life. Going through a week–long process of
meeting thousands of girls can be intense, overwhelming but intriguing and exciting as well.
Recruitment to many is known as a terrifying process where girls come from all over with matching
shirts, bright smiles and dreams that at the end of the week they will receive the white envelope that
incases the 4x6 card with the sororities crest inviting them into their sisterhood. By preparing ahead
of time, which includes building a resume, searching for recommendation letters and extensive
research on each chapter, sorority recruitment doesn't have to be an intimating process.
Before the recruitment process begins the first step is to create a resume. The main idea for potential
new members to create a resume is to show the best version of themselves. The first section of all
resumes has to do with education. This includes listing graduating high school, graduation date,
class rank, GPA, dual credit/AP courses and ACT/SAT sources. The next step is getting the perfect
headshot. Thousands of girls go through recruitment every year so it is imperative to stand out.
When including a head shot it is important to remember that "everyone's face is part of their own
"brand" and the goal is to be recognized". Therefore, its best to choose a photo that is exemplifies
confidence and personality. Having a headshot is a great way to put a name to a face, however
recruitment is not based on looks but instead on character and values. The best thing to include on a
resume is "all of accomplishments from the last four years". Accomplishments include but are not
limited to extracurricular activities, community service, and awards. It is most important to include
any leadership roles because sororities are all about empowering women to have commitment and
dedication. Here is a sample of a recruitment resumes. (SHOW IMAGE) After a bullet proof resume
is completed the next step is to seek out recommendation letters.
Recommendation letters are a great way to get prepare for recruitment and show interest in each

Alpha Sorority Analysis
In my opinion the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is to better society as a whole
through the promotion of sisterhood, scholarship and service to it's member and mankind. They are
constantly evolving and reevaluating the needs of the human race. This is best emphasized in the
New Dimensions of Service, which outlines the five targets of the organization as it pertains to
service. I believe these targets are realistic, necessary and embody the main principle of Alpha
Kappa Alpha and how they are all necessary for the next principle to work. Sisterhood, scholarship

I believe that I posses the level of ethical standards and integrity and dedication to sisterhood and
love for service, required to uphold the reputation of Alpha Kappa Alpha. These characteristics are
expressed in my actions and the strives I make to and improve my character daily through what I
call "small victories": small things that can be done to better myself and others daily. These are
achieved through academic integrity and doing my part, to volunteer, mentor and help people any
time presented the opportunity. My dedication to sisterhood in my opinion is rarely matched and is
one I have been nurturing for years, starting as a Girl Scout, continuing to Girls In The Game
program and most recently apart of a Sisters Inc, a mentoring/leadership program that I've had the
pleasure to be involved with in for over six years and have been involved with on numerous levels;
mentee, mentor, ambassador and alumni commitee. I've been afforded the opportunity to make life
long friends, mentor girls, build self esteem and develop in my journey to being an all around model
citizen. All of these programs not only showed me the importance of sisterhood but also scholarship
and service, showing me that a real sister are those that will help you and will except your help
back. A real sister is one who you never have to sacrifice your love of service you're your dedication
to scholarship for and lastly love you like blood. Lastly I believe that my love of service is
characteristic I believe that I can use to maintain the status of Alpha Kappa Alpha, from a young age
my grandmother would preach to me "do unto others...". From a young I knew it was my
responsibility to assist someone in need any chance I am given. And have carried this belief to every
organization I have joined for the Girl Scouts of America to my recent membership into the Student

College is a tremendous chapter in one's life. It is simply not about school, but it is about the

desires the "college experience," also known as fun. There are countless of entertainment in college.
It can be through parties, be with friends, or becoming involved with the school. Most of the time,
incoming college students want to be a part of their college as much as possible. The two well–

purpose of the fraternities and sororities are to broaden a student's social experience in the college

Sorority life is more than the parties, frat boys and booze. It's about being apart of a community and
the traditions and rituals that have been around of hundreds of years. The average young woman
should consider joining a sorority because of what they stand for and the benefits that it can bring
you. Although sororities can by pricey and seem to have a bad reputation in the media, they give
young women values to live by, networking opportunities for the work force and a long lasting
sisterhood. Movies and the social media do not give sororities justice. They showcase them as a
bunch of mean, ditsy girls who want to party and get their "M.R.S." degree but I can personally say
that sororities are much more than the stereotype that they are given by society and portrayed in the

Sororities as a Social Institution Essay
When one first thinks of Greek life or a sorority the only thing that comes to mind is the social
aspect. Most people don't think of sororities as social institutions that envelop their own culture,
with mannerisms, languages and customs that are unique to each individual organization. However,
these institutions promote a common set of values that enable members to become connected in a
way that has a more profound meaning than just social interaction. Greek organizations are good
examples of how institutions can affect and be affected by social status and roles within the
collegiate community. They are also a prime example of how race, class and gender can affect a
social setting in both positive and negative manners. Greek ... Show more content on

Within sororities is a language all their own; many words are created or used in a different manner.
For example, "big" is not an adjective that describes something grand or large as in the English
language. However, "big" is a term used to describe an older sister whose is assigned to a younger
sister within the organization to be a mentor and a friend. Another example is the word "waltz",
which is not referring to a ballroom dance but rather the celebration of a sister's twenty first
birthday. Even the word "sister" is a part of a sororities' unique language as it does not denote the
relationship between blood–related relatives, but rather signifies the sister like bonds between
members. This language is imperative to a sorority's culture because it unifies members under a
commonality that distinguishes them from other groups and organizations, much like racial and
religious cultures. Each sorority also has different gestures, much like the language, that are
individualized to each sorority and help distinguish one from the other. Every sorority has a hand
gesture to designate what sorority they are in. Members use this gesture in pictures, when
participating in events and many other times to help differentiate members. Also, sororities have
gestures that encompass all organizations to help distinguish themselves as being in a sorority. For
example, the "sorority squat" is a common tool used by a big and little to distinguish their roles in a
picture.

Membership In Fraternities And Sororities
The decrease in membership in fraternities and sororities has occurred due to negative
representation in media and criminal reputations. However, students should join fraternities and
sororities because together they can do work for charities, volunteer, and fundraise. Students should
also become members to be a part of a group life in which you are essentially guaranteed lifelong
friendships and a thriving social life. Although the monetary cost may be high and the superficial
representation in media makes fraternity and sorority members look daft and trouble–making, the
benefits to membership include helping out communities and being held responsible for your
academic and extracurricular activities. The words fraternity and sorority can define any group of
men and women that come together to form a club, but the words are well–known for college Greek
life organizations. Fraternities and sororities are known for their private imitations and rules, which
sometimes can only be learned about by becoming a part of the club. The College of William and

Getting Into A Fraternity Or Sorority

  • 1. Getting into a Fraternity or Sorority College is something everyone dreams about while in high school. It may seem fun and exciting, but there is a tremendous number of mistakes that can happen. For instance, imagine someone has just been accepted into college, and it is her first day. She thought it was a dream to be in a sorority, but in reality it was a nightmare. After a week, she knows "Hell Week" is coming, but she wants shake everything off, and think everything is going well and the other members will accept her with no hesitation. Today is a lazy day, and she is just sitting in her dorm watching television, and out of nowhere, she was blindfolded and thrown into a car. Her fellow frat members start to beat her with random objects, and they say harsh words to break her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Laws). Have you ever wondered why they do not have hazing laws? No one truly knows why they do not have the laws. As some people think, hazing is a great thing, and it puts people through a great experience to go through. Since hazing can endanger the physical safety of a person, and produces mental, physical discomfort, and causes dismay, humiliation, and dehumanizes an individual, society needs to learn about hazing and stop it from happening. We know that people consider it a tradition that has been going on for ages, but it's an appalling experience to go through. Everywhere around the world hazing is happening and not one person can do a thing about it. The earliest recorded event of hazing occurred in eighteen thirty–eight. The first recorded death happened in eighteen forty–eight. (Hank). So you can see why some may consider it a tradition. Many hazing incidents do not just involve members of a certain group, but sometimes it can also include the coach or who is in charge of the group. Twenty–two percent of coaches or advisors are involved in hazing towards the athlete or student. Many of the coaches and advisors even help perform the hazing incidents! (Coaches). A person who you would think would be a role model to their players involve themselves in these involuntary acts.Next time someone thinks that they have the best coach a team can have, always remember someone can be ... • 3. My Sorority Is A Discourse Community The discourse community I have chosen is within my sorority, Delta Delta Delta (Tri Delta). There are many stereotypes associated with Tri Delta, and that is the most irritating thing about being in a sorority. Anyone from my high school would insist that I am not a sorority girl if someone were to ask them. When I started my fall semester, I was not expecting to rush because once again again, I am not the "sorority type". Greek life at Boise State is unlike any other campus. Some may think that being in a sorority is all about social standing, parties, and being better than the people around you. In reality, it is the exact opposite. For the rest of this paper, I am going to prove to you why Tri Delta is a discourse community. In order to get information for my paper, I interviewed someone with a position of authority within Tri Delta. Her name is Danielle, and she is the new member educator. The first thing I learned about Tri Delta is that it is more than just letters on a shirt, songs and chants, a gold pin, socials, rituals, an obligation, or a way of life. "Being in a sorority is about learning about people and being able to give without expecting a return. Tri Delta has allowed me to find lifelong friends and find confidence in myself as well as in my sisters," Danielle explained. After hearing her explanation, I couldn't agree more. Danielle also told me that the close relationships are her favorite part. "My favorite part about being in Tri Delta is the sisterhood. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Hazing And Sororities In August of this year, hundreds of thousands of 18–year–old young men and women begin their college careers. These students have nothing but hope and optimism as they start to venture out on their own. As they start to meet new people, experience life on their own, and engage in a rigorous curriculum, many students find themselves looking for a social outlet. NCAA sports, club sports, church group, business club, architecture club, honors society, African American youth group, Hispanic youth group and thousands of other social/professional clubs surround campus to help students flourish in their new home. These social outlets allow for students to meet people with similar interests and aspirations, but they also challenge students to try new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The techniques that are used by all fraternities and sororities are called rushing and hazing. Rushing is the act of popularizing a given fraternity or sorority to attract new members. As mentioned in the introduction, the alternate forms of rushing cover a large spectrum, but they all have the same goal: be the best to attract the best. Hazing is another variable method closely aligned with fraternities and sororities, but hazing for different fraternities and sororities can have vastly different outcomes. Hazing, in its most simple and basic form, is the imposition of strenuous or complicated tasks as a form of initiation. In contrast to popular belief, a lot of normal activity is considered hazing. For example, a college football team might tell the freshman that they are responsible for cleaning up loose garbage on the field after a practice. As mild as this example might be, hazing can be taken to an extreme and often has poor outcomes that can severely damage the psyche of an individual. However, a sense of tradition and continuation continually inspires hazing among social groups, but fraternities and sororities especially. Hazing has become a form a bonding that allow new initiates to become closer as a brotherhood or sisterhood; these two both being the most important part of fraternities and sororities. To create an everlasting bond, Greek organizations promote ultimate a familial intimacy that is unparalleled by other social groups. It is in this strive for brotherhood and sisterhood that mistakes are made and people begin to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since 2005 more than 60 people have died in fraternity related incidents, Fraternities and Sororities now at a record of 750,000 members provide invaluable leadership training, networking opportunities, emotional and academic support. Why should there be greek life on campus? Because it helps with college students, it gives you a place to live on campus, makes you feel like part of an accepted group, that is why people like it and join it. If you stopped and took it all in, you could see all thirteen houses standing out around a stage in different themes, waiting for the new pledges. After months of preparation of recommendation letters, resumes and shopping for the perfect outfit to wear to each house event during recruitment, Bid Day was finally here. Today was the day that over 700 girls would run to their new home for the next four years and make bonds and friendships that would last a lifetime. **** Moving to college is huge milestone on its own, but moving to college and going through recruitment is just insane. All summer long I would have family and friends ask me, "Alexis, why are you rushing?" and I would just blow it off and continue on my day. The big move in day finally approached after waiting a century for it to finally become true and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. Benefits Of Sorority Groups Martinez 1 Rachel Martinez Ms. Martin ENC 1102 7 February 2017 Sorority Groups Have you ever felt what it was like to be a part of a group? There is a wide range of groups one could be a part of, whether it be a religious group, a group at school, a mob, a sorority or fraternity, everyone has been a part of some type of group in their life. Being a part of a group makes one feel important by allowing oneself to engage in tasks that could potentially benefit oneself, someone else, or a society as a whole. Engaging in a group allows one to feel like they are making a difference in the world and for themselves. Therefore, while being in a group is a beneficial way to bond with others, feel a variety of different emotions, and learn new things, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, many sorority girls feel like they have more authority and power when together, rather than when they are not with each other. For example, in the article, "How Fraternities and Sororities Impact Students", Alan Reifman states that, "there may be something about people who join Greek–letter organizations–extraversion, risk–taking, excitement–seeking, and so forth–" also, "the sense of confidence." This idea relates to how sorority girls act differently. For example, in a sorority one gives speeches, volunteers, and creates ideas to make their community a better place. When together, sorority girls may have no issue volunteering and helping out the community because they have a collection of girls by their side helping and supporting each other out. This sense of community builds each and every girls confidence to a point where they can take on anything life throws at them. However, when they are not with each other, one has to face the world alone, and without the feeling of someone supporting and being there for them it can cause a sense ... • 13. A Day Of Sorority Recruitment As I walked into the glittery ballroom once again, trying my hardest to remove the white cat hair from my black sweater, I noticed that almost everyone had heels on and ignored the Panhellenic letter that suggested we wear "church attire." I was already nervous about having to wear an overly conservative dress that didn`t match my style for the second day of sorority recruitment, so seeing that everybody else looked like runway models only added to my nausea. However, when I looked around the room I saw many girls who were didn`t fit in, like me; some who opted for slacks, some who decided to wear no makeup, some who just didn't look like everyone else. We all had similar demeanors: uncertain smiles, furrowed brows, and faces that were pointed straight down, as if we were being reprimanded. After everyone had sat down, the recruitment organizers slowly handed out envelops to every girl, which would list the sororities that had invited them back. There was no chance that we would have no names in our envelopes, because those girls got informed that they weren`t welcome back the night before. So, when I opened my envelope I knew that at least one group thought I was good enough. I had my hopes high for a certain sorority and I was pretty positive that they liked me, but I was faced with disappointment as I opened my envelope. The one group that I felt I had "belonged" in had rejected me, and the one group that I had dreaded were at the top of my list. Now, I was lucky, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Hazing And Sororitys The article that I have selected is about hazing and how it is heavily associated with greek fraternity and sororitys across the U.S. Hazing is the act of ''any activity expected of someone that joins a group and has the potential to humiliates, degrades, abuses, comprise safety, or inflicts pain until its victims''(Richardson, Wang, &Hill, 2012). Hazing as a form of initation into these fratertinities and sorriorites and the behavior is highly anticpitate and welcomed as for many it is look at as a form of handed down tradition. • 17. Should Fraternities And Sororities Be Banned? The question about Greek life on campus is whether if fraternities and sororities should be banned. The reasoning behind that is because of all the sexual assault, hazing, and binge drinking happening on campus. All of those problems are causing people to be hurt, be raped, or be killed. But if you look into it, Greek organization does have underage members. Colleges should not ban fraternities and sororities. Greek organizations are still relevant on today's campus. Simon Riker, a freelance musician said, "I learned a lot about myself and other people, more than I would have otherwise... offered me a tremendous amount of opportunities and a vast social network" (Friedman 990). Many fraternities are involved in their communities. The fraternity and sorority would hold a fundraiser where they would raise more than $20 million for charity. Averagely most fraternities have a slightly higher grade–point average from just the students who are not in a fraternity. The grade–point average is approximately 2.912 (Friedman 990). Fraternity and sorority members is more likely to be prepared after their graduation. The percent within the Greeks and the non–Greeks on how prepared the students are after graduation is 37 percent Greek to 27 percent non–Greek (Friedman 990). Fraternities and sororities are seen as a way to further one's career after graduation (Friedman 987). Since a few of us want nothing to do with this lifestyle, our ability to stay completely objective and not include our own personal views was challenging. Conversely, some of our group members were interested in joining SDT, which also lead to bias. Due to the different opinions on Greek life, we believe both biases were able to counteract each other and help us remain as objective as possible. Our informants were mostly from the same pledge class, meaning they pledged the same semester. This could have influenced our research due to a similarity in age, viewpoint, and experience in the sorority so far. Different observations would have been drawn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Pros And Cons Of Sorority In College Almost all college student have a choice to make early on in their college careers, the choice to participate in rush for a fraternity or sorority. During rush week fraternities and sororities are recruiting and trying to find people that they think will be a good fit to their fraternity or sorority. Choosing to rush and trying to join a fraternity or sorority will have a lasting impact on the rest of your college career. Choosing not to rush is a common choice of a lot of college students. Some college students don't want to have extra things on their agenda so they don't rush, Some think that the greek life in college is just like what they have seen in movies and they don't think it's for them so they don't rush. There are many good reasons for a new college student to decide not to join a fraternity or sorority, but the rest of your college career will be affected by this choice. Choosing not to rush will give the student more freetime. Leaving you more time to study or do what you need to do on your freetime. Not rushing is going to be overall less stressful, the new student won't have to worry about impressing the fraternity or sorority they like, they wouldn't have to worry about the requirements of the fraternity's or sororities. The students who decide not to go greek will have some more alone time to meet new people and make new friends. • 25. Informative Speech On Sororities Informative Speech Outline Introduction: A) You see them everywhere. Walking around proudly in their Greek letters that they've earned, and that they have come a long way to be able to wear. They come in all different colors such as pink and green, red and black, blue and white.... the list goes on. Even though they wear different letters and colors, they are all a part of one thing: a sorority. B) All of these different sororities had to come from somewhere right? C) There are over 80 sororities that are known today, only 27 of which are not affiliated, meaning that they aren't "official" but people still join them. D) According to usnews.com only 39% of women at The University of Alabama are in sorority. E) Today, I am going to educate you on the origin of sororities, next, compare their history from then until now, and the overall goal of sororities. A lot of people see the different sorority houses and girls around their campus, but don't know where they originated from. This brings me to my first main point. Body: Main Point 1: Sororities were originally created from the image of fraternities. A) According to dictionary.com, a fraternity is a local or national organization of male students, primarily for social purposes, usually with secret initiation and rites and a name composed of two or three Greek letters. B) When Fraternities were first thought of, they had to be kept secret. 1. They were known as secret societies and only had up to 30 members. 2. When they finally started getting recognition, women fraternities came about. C) Sororities were originally known as women fraternities. 1. They were known as women fraternities because that was the only word known to describe them in the 1800s. 2. According to appstate.edu some sororities still are required to use the word fraternity in their official name because they were already legally incorporated and couldn't change it. 3. The first woman fraternity was called The Adelphean Society. They were founded in 1851 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. Because of this, more women fraternities started to surface and so it began. 4. The word sorority comes from the Latin word "soror" meaning sister. A Sisterhood Of The Delta Sigma Sorority A Sisterhood called to Serve Everyone knows about the stroll offs, roll calls, and step shows when an African American Greek sorority or fraternity is the topic. But is that all African American Greeks do is step and stroll? Believe it or not the image of African American Greeks has been tainted and miscued by their entertaining performances. Better known as the Divine Nine, the African American Greeks their hand signs and colors. The Divine Nine is a brotherhood and sisterhood organizations that are called to help the community and give back. These organizations also give women a chance to make a difference. It is quite evident that the purpose and message from the earlier founders of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority still live on today. I asked Cuevas if she had any family members that were Deltas and she confirmed that she in fact did. Cuevas has a cousin that's a Delta and her grandmother's best friend is also a Delta. Hazing has been going on for quite amount of time, and banning organization who haze will make other chapters want to inflict pain and humiliation to their own pledges. Not only does is lead to a physical and mental breakdown path, but it also weakens the students and strips them of their power. The first Greek letter organization was created in 1776 as a way for students to meet with each other and discuss current events and literature. From there on, more of these groups were started at schools around the country. It was rare to have women be appointed into one of these because of their lesser social status. Flushing toilets after a current member takes a dump, not sleeping for two days, carrying bricks in backpacks for weeks, and sexual intercourse are some of the many shocking things new members will do to earn their way into a fraternity or sorority. According to Kevin Brown, "you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do to get in, and that could be anything." Some sororities "will paddle each other till their behinds are bleeding. They will force girls to do things like boob ranking, where they're given five minutes to examine each other's chests and rank themselves by size" (Morehouse) before getting accepted. Going through a week–long process of meeting thousands of girls can be intense, overwhelming but intriguing and exciting as well. Recruitment to many is known as a terrifying process where girls come from all over with matching shirts, bright smiles and dreams that at the end of the week they will receive the white envelope that incases the 4x6 card with the sororities crest inviting them into their sisterhood. By preparing ahead of time, which includes building a resume, searching for recommendation letters and extensive research on each chapter, sorority recruitment doesn't have to be an intimating process. Before the recruitment process begins the first step is to create a resume. The main idea for potential new members to create a resume is to show the best version of themselves. The first section of all resumes has to do with education. This includes listing graduating high school, graduation date, class rank, GPA, dual credit/AP courses and ACT/SAT sources. The next step is getting the perfect headshot. Thousands of girls go through recruitment every year so it is imperative to stand out. When including a head shot it is important to remember that "everyone's face is part of their own "brand" and the goal is to be recognized". Therefore, its best to choose a photo that is exemplifies confidence and personality. Most people don't think of sororities as social institutions that envelop their own culture, with mannerisms, languages and customs that are unique to each individual organization. However, these institutions promote a common set of values that enable members to become connected in a way that has a more profound meaning than just social interaction. For example, "big" is not an adjective that describes something grand or large as in the English language. However, "big" is a term used to describe an older sister whose is assigned to a younger sister within the organization to be a mentor and a friend. Another example is the word "waltz", which is not referring to a ballroom dance but rather the celebration of a sister's twenty first birthday. Even the word "sister" is a part of a sororities' unique language as it does not denote the relationship between blood–related relatives, but rather signifies the sister like bonds between members. This language is imperative to a sorority's culture because it unifies members under a commonality that distinguishes them from other groups and organizations, much like racial and religious cultures. Each sorority also has different gestures, much like the language, that are individualized to each sorority and help distinguish one from the other. Every sorority has a hand gesture to designate what sorority they are in. Members use this gesture in pictures, when participating in events and many other times to help differentiate members. Also, sororities have gestures that encompass all organizations to help distinguish themselves as being in a sorority. For example, the "sorority squat" is a common tool used by a big and little to distinguish their roles in a picture. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
