The Death Of A Sleeping Pill
Alternative Views: There are conflicting views on the use of stilnox as a sleeping aid and the use of
sleeping aids as the amount of people that have died as result of these drugs is slowly increasing. In
America, a study by Scribbs Health, a non–profit organisation, estimates that, "500,000 'excess
deaths' have been caused by taking drugs such as Ambien (American equivalent of stilnox) and
Restoril". These deaths are a result of two main factors, unconscious behaviours and suicide.
Commiting suicide using a sleeping pill is the preferred method for women as it causes the
metabolic pathways throughout the body to start shutting down. These systems include the
respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems and the result of such a widespread shut down is death.
The drug is attributed with certain behaviours that occur while being unconscious. It has been
reported by numerous patients that the drug results in sleep related behaviours such as, sleepwalking
and has resulted in many deaths. Stilnox however can be beneficial to those that are effected by
mental health issues and suffering from sleep deprivation. Sleep disturbance can be caused by
numerous variables however, a main cause can be hormonal imbalance. Stilnox binds to receptors in
the brain, which promotes drowsiness. In some cases it has also be found to improve the quality of
life of some people that have been diagnosed with different mental disabilities. After administering
the drug clear improvement can be seen

Barbiturates
Hypnotic drugs produce sleeping effects on individuals. There are different groups of these sleeping
aids. The most common of these groups are the barbiturates, benzodiazepines and non–
benzodiazepines. Here, aim to take a look at these three groups and find which group is better for
patients who are suffering from insomnia.
Barbiturates
Barbiturates affect the central nervous system and amongst the earliest medicines that appeared to
treat sleeplessness. Not regarded among the best sleeping tablets, they are still prescribed in
different parts of the world due to their simple availability and predictable action on the body.
Barbiturates are also quite useful as anaesthetic agents and are also used for recreational purposes.
They are replaced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are usually prescribed for a short duration, because they carry a risk of causing addiction and
drug dependence. Long acting benzodiazepines are also great at treating anxiety and stress.
Among all the sleeping drugs, diazepam (Valium) is perhaps the best known psychoactive drug in
the world. It is highly effective and works with over 90% of the patients who are suffering from
insomnia. The extreme efficacy of the drug however, is its downfall because careless use can
produce drug dependence.
Non–benzodiazepines
The non–benzodiazepines represent the new class of hypnotic drugs. They are often termed as Z–
drugs because their names start with the letter Z. Drugs such as Zopiclone and Zolpidem are known
to produce less toxic effects on the body, when used for treating conditions of sleeplessness and
psychological anxiety. The mechanism of action of these drugs however, is similar to that of the
benzodiazepine family.
All of the drugs belonging to this family modulate the GABA–A receptors in the nervous system of
the patients. The main advantage of this drug family is that drug dependence occurs at a slower
pace. These are the major subdivisions in this drug family:

The Marketed Benefits Of Sleeping Pills
The Issue of Insomnia
The often hectic and unpredictable lifestyles many American's lives have lead to about 30% of
adults experiencing some form of insomnia, with 10% having it as a chronic condition. Insomnia is
a condition where someone is unable to or stay in a state of prolonged sleep, and is divided into two
types: Primary and Co–morbid. Most American's report working over 40 hours a week, on top of
maintain other important relationships in their "off" hours, which can lead to a restful nights sleep
taking a back seat. This isn't even getting into the millions with often painful and chronic health
conditions, such as arthritis, affecting them on daily basis. The side effects of not being able to rest
can vary from being a prolonged annoyance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the main issues with persistent sleeping pill usage is the risk of addiction. Sleeping pills
already come along with potential side effects, including:
Lightheadedness
Coordination loss
Dizzy spells
Headaches
Loss of Appetite
Feelings of Burning and Tingling
There's also the potential risk of allergic reactions of varying degrees. These include:
Nausea
Erratic Heartbeat
Face Swelling
Hives
Developing a psychological dependency on sleeping pills can lead to a user exceeding the
recommended dosage. The user could be exposing themselves into experiencing the previously
listed side effects even more than they should. There's also a risk with consuming alcohol or some
other medication with a sleeping pill, as that could fatally harm the user. If one were to put a stop a
sleeping meds, there's a risk of developing withdrawal that's referred to as rebound insomnia, which
is when the user develops worse insomnia than when they started, along with anxiety. Those who
have illnesses such as sleep apnea, liver disease and repertory problems, along with breastfeeding or
pregnant women are cautioned against using sleeping pills. Even more troublingly, those who
regularly use sleeping pills are at an increased risk of developing cancer.

History of Present Illness: Mr. Boza is a very pleasant 58–year–old gentleman who was previously
seen by William Pease, DO for chronic hypoxia, morbid obesity, and obesity hypoventilation. His
last evaluation was in April 2015. He states that since that time he has lost a significant amount of
weight as he has noticed significant decrease in the size of his pannus as well as a decrease in lower
extremity edema. He is using Lasix 60 mg b.i.d. to t.i.d. and has noticed good urine output of up to
two liters per day. He does admit to drinking a significant amount of Crystal light, up to three to four

Vitals: Temperature 97.4. Pulse 111. Blood pressure 136/92. O2 sat 91% on 5 nasal cannula. Weight
455.6 pounds. Height 5'10".
General: Morbidly obese. No apparent distress. Appears stated age.
Lungs: Clear to auscultation bilaterally. No wheezes, rales, or rhonchi. Symmetric chest expansion.
Breathing nonlabored.
Extremities: There is a significant amount of lower extremity edema as well as chronic venous stasis
changes of the skin

3. Chronic hypoxic respiratory failure.
4. Reactive airways disease.
Mr. Boza has been counseled on the need for non–invasive positive pressure ventilation for his
obesity hypoventilation, however continues to defer at this time as he feels he is unable to sleep with
the device, once again, thus making treatment of his sleep disordered breathing nearly impossible. I
have counseled Mr. Boza to decrease his fluid intake to less than 2L per day. He should continue his
current diuretic regimen. He does have prior pulmonary function tests that showed reversible airflow
obstruction and therefore he should continue his ProAir on an as needed basis. It does seem that he
was recently evaluated by Daniel Davies, DO and was given a prescription of prednisone, which he

Essay On Terri Shiavo
They were the subjects of public disputes with family members, court systems, medical
professionals, the media, and society at large. Terri Schiavo, Nancy Cruzan and Karen Ann Quinlan;
their names are synonymous with permanent vegetative state (PVS). The amazing technological
advancements in modern medicine has been credited with keeping persons alive who in times past
would have died, therefore this is remarkable for countless families. In the cases of the Quinlan's,
the Cruzan's and many like them, families members find it unbearable to witness loved ones who
linger indefinitely in PVS with little or no chance for recovery. There are many like Terri Schiavo's

374, para. 3). According to John Collins Harvey, a senior research scholar and professor emeritus of
medicine at Georgetown University, feeding tubes should be removed from patients in PVS because
there is no hope for recovery. Harvey explains that the cerebral cortex the area of the brain that
controls conscious thought, language, and sensory perception has been irreparably damaged by a
lack of oxygen (Harvey, 2004). However, recent studies on DOC have revealed the difficulty of
diagnosing PVS, especially because a few PVS patients recovered consciousness and demonstrated
awareness as a result of drug therapies and functional imaging studies (Fisher & Appelbaum, 2010).
Obviously, these patients were not in PVS, an irreversible condition. The awakening of persons after
the administration of specific medications brings attention to the possibility that VS is often over
diagnosed (Sara & Pistoia, 2010). "The differential diagnosis of disorders of consciousness is
challenging. The rate of misdiagnosis is approximately 40%, and new methods are required to
complement bedside testing, particularly if the patient's capacity to show behavioral signs of
awareness is diminished" (Monti, Vanhaudenhuyse, Coleman, & Boly, 2010, para. 1). The Issue of
Death The definition of death is another issue paramount to this discussion. Robert Rakestraw,
professor of theology at Bethel Theological Seminary in his article on this very subject

Musculoskeletal Disorder Case Study
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect the back, neck, shoulders and upper limbs, but can also
affect the lower limbs. They may result from more than one of these tissues. Causes Most work–
related MSDs develop over time. Normally they do not have a single cause: they are often caused by
a combination of several factors. Among the physical causes and risk factors related to work
organization include: Handling loads , especially when you rotate or bend your back; Repetitive
movements or that require an effort; Taking improper or static postures; Vibration, low light or work
in cold environments; Intense pace of work; Prolonged retention of the same standing position or

Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines
History The history of depressants stretches back thousands of years. Alcohol, the prototypical
depressant, was consumed by humans as early as 10,000 B.C., as established by the discovery of
beer jugs from the late Stone Age. Other natural depressants such as opium also have ancient
origins. Historically, barbiturates in particular have been used as "truth serums" because people
under the influence of these drugs often speak without thinking Classifications Depressants can be
divided into three main groups: barbiturates, benzodiazepines and sleep medications. Barbiturates
are used to treat seizure disorders and surgical procedures. Benzodiazepines are used to treat acute

All of the information you have received through that day doesn't just directly be logged into your
brain it it takes a few steps and all of theses steps happen when you go to sleep. Through the night a
process called "consolidation" happens little pieces of memories go to different places called short
term memory and long term. Many researchers have done shown that when you wake up you retain
the memories from the day before, that you will perform a lot better on a memory task. For your
body to restore and rejuvenate you need from seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Your body doesn't
only need sleep to store all of the memories, it also helps grow muscles, repair tissues, and helps
synthesize hormones. If you don't get enough sleep you will go into sleep deprived after a while of
not getting enough sleep you will go into "sleep debt" and it's a good idea to take a day off and build
your sleep back up so you won't be in sleep deprived no more. The best sleep habits is to have a

Zopiclone Is A Drug First Developed By Rhone Poulenc Rore
Zopiclone is a cyclopyrrolone drug first developed by Rhône–Poulenc Rore (1, page 220) in the
early 1970s (2). It is classified as a GABA–A receptor agonist, and is a central nervous system
depressant. Zopiclone binds onto subunits on the GABA–A receptor and modulates the opening of
the chloride ion channels in the neuron cell membrane (3, page 1). By increasing the conductance of
chloride ions and hyperpolarizing the neuron, the frequency of action potentials is reduced. This
causes an inhibition of brain activity, causing zopiclone to have hypnotic, sedative, muscle relaxant,
anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects (4).
Zopiclone acts much in the same way as benzodiazepines when used to treat insomnia, but was
believed to have less adverse effects, and less potential for developing tolerance and addiction. As a
result, it was first marketed as a better alternative to benzodiazepines. However, recent studies have
revealed that it is unclear whether zopiclone shows improvements over benzodiazepines when
assessed on therapeutic qualities and addiction potential (5, page 1). As a result, both zopiclone and
benzodiazepines are included in schedule IV of the United States Controlled Substances Act (6).
Zopiclone is known by several brand names, such as Imovane, Zimovane and Zimoclone (7). It is
used to treat insomnia in adults arising from increased sleep latency, frequent awakenings during in
the night, and premature awakening (3, page 1). Zopiclone alleviates the symptoms of

termed benzodiazepines are effective and used predominantly for anxiety but aid sleep due to having
sedating properties. Benzodiazepine intended uses are for anxiety (general, panic, anticipatory and
anxiety secondary to stress), sleep, side effects of other medications, agitation, alcohol and other
sedative/hypnotic withdrawal and muscle spasms. Benzodiazepines include diazepam, lorazepam,
clonazepam and alprazolam where all possess addictive properties. Other medications useful in
treating anxiety without sedating properties include buspirone and D–cycloserine.
Prior to prescribing a sleeping pill, it is imperative "to assess the nature of the sleep problem" (p
200) as insomnia and sleep apnea which may require specific treatment outside sleeping pills.
Sleeping pills are subdivided into five categories namely; benzodiazepines, specific GABA–A
receptor agonists, sedating antidepressants, medications that change the circadian rhythm and over
the counter sleeping pills. GABA–A agonists include zolpidem and zaleplon while sedating
antidepressants include trazodone and

Case Study Alzheimer's Disease
A Look at Alzheimer's Disease: Onset, Care, and Treatment
At some point in our lives we have probably all known someone that had or has dementia. Dementia
is a generalized term that refers to the progressive, irreversible decline in mental function. Dementia
is a disease that not only affects the patient but also affects the patient's loved ones. Caring for a
loved one with dementia can be very difficult and heart breaking but there are lots of resources to
help.
Dementia is caused by irreversible damage to the patient's brain cells and the cells ability to
communicate with one another. There are no specific tests to diagnose dementia. Patients are
diagnosed based on a careful medical history, a physical, blood work, and talking to a doctor ...

However, there are treatments, both drug and non–drug, that can slow the progression of symptoms.
Drug therapies include cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA receptor antagonists. Different
medications are prescribed at different stages of the disease. Donepezil (Aricept), which prevent the
breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical in the brain that helps with learning and memory, is a
cholinesterase inhibitor that can be prescribed to treat a patient at any stage of the disease. Although
Aricept can be used at any stage, drugs like Rivastigmine (Exelon) and Galantamine (Razadyne),
also cholinesterase inhibitors, are only approved to treat the disease when it is mild or moderate.
Memantine (Namenda) is a NMDA receptor antagonists that is used to treat moderate to severe
Alzheimer's and improves some patient's ability to complete daily tasks. Namzaric is a drug that
combines the cholinesterase inhibitor, donepezil (Aricept), and NMDA receptor antagonists,
memantine (Namenda), in one drug. Along with medications that help with mental symptoms there
are medications like tricyclic antidepressants (trazodone), benzodiazepines (lorazepam),
antipsychotics (risperidone), and sleeping pills (zolpidem), that help with sleep issues that come
with Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's disease is a complicated disease that research is still trying to figure out. Although age
is the greatest risk factor,

Effects Of Overmedication On Society
Overmedication? The Impact on American Society In recent years, studies have shown that over
medication has become prevalent in America. Overmedication is when a patient uses unnecessary or
excessive amounts of medication. Unfortunately, a large number of people have died from over
medication. This is caused by doctors or specialists prescribing too much medication to their
patients, or by people taking too much medication to ease their pain without precaution. This not
only affects a person physically but also mentally. If a person feels that medication is the only
helping them, then they will keep taking those pills, resulting in the destruction of the body and
mind. Plus millions of dollars are spent on prescription pills, which is another reason why there is so
much over medication. Overmedication in America has a negative impact on society, which is
leading to physical and mental damages. Overmedication is starting to take over the lives of
children, due to being diagnosed with disorders and diseases. Since more disorders are being
discovered, this leads towards more medication that has to be prescribed. "More than 6 million
children are diagnosed with hyperactiveness such as ADHD, and 2 million of those children are
between the age of 2–6. This leads to doctors prescribing these children stimulants such as Adderall
or Ritalin to calm them down"(Cha). "More than 75% of children are receiving pills as treatment"
(Cha). These pills are suppose to help them in

Barbiturate And Benzodiazepines
Sedatives encompass a wide variety of drugs with different mechanisms of action that can induce
depression of the central nervous system (CNS). In the first part of the 20th century, the
pharmacotherapy of anxiety and insomnia relied on barbiturates, which were replaced with
benzodiazepines as drugs of choice in the second part of the previous century. Besides those two
groups of drugs, other sedatives are also used for that purpose. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines
Barbiturates are nonselective CNS depressants that used to be the mainstay of treatment to sedate
patients or to induce and maintain sleep. In modern medicine they have been largely replaced by the
benzodiazepines, primarily because they can induce tolerance, physical dependence ... Show more

Their onset of action is rapid, and they are considered the preferred hypnotics as they do not
significantly alter the various sleep stages due to their relative selectivity for the aforementioned
receptor. The representatives of this group are: eszopiclone (Lunesta) zaleplon (Sonata) zolpidem
(Ambien) zopiclone (Zimovane) Certain antihistamines with sedating properties (also known as
first–generation antihistamines) are effective in treating mild forms of insomnia, although numerous
undesirable side effects (such as their anticholinergic properties) make them less useful in
comparison with benzodiazepines. Some sedative antihistamines can be found in numerous over–

The Pros And Cons Of Sleep Aids
Many people throughout Missouri, and elsewhere, use over–the–counter and prescription sleep aids.
In fact, NBC News reports that as of 2015, at least 8.6 million people across the U.S. take
prescription sleeping pills. These medications may help people get the rest that their bodies need.
However, a recent study found that they may also pose a significant hazard for motorists. Examining
the link between sleeping pills and crash risk Researchers from the University of Washington
recently conducted a study to examine the risks of sleep aids for drivers. Their report was published
in the American Journal of Public Health. For the study, CBS News reports that the researchers
looked at the auto accident and prescription records for more than 400,000 motorists in the state of
Washington. Those included in the study were enrolled in the Group Health Cooperative insurance
plan with drug benefits. Of the drivers studied, just less than six percent had been newly prescribed

Their findings were in line with warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which
suggested that the medications may stay in the bloodstream at high levels. Consequently, people's
ability to drive safely may be impaired and they may be involved in collisions that result in serious
injuries or death. NBC News reports that the researchers found the impairments that those who use
sleep aids may experience are similar to those caused by alcohol intoxication. The study showed that
the crash risk for those who use these medications may be 25 percent to three times greater than it is
for those who do not. The increased danger of being involved in an accident for regular users of
sleep aids continues for up to one year. Over time, it seems, the effects do wear off. This may occur
as people adjust to the medications or their bodies learn to compensate for

How Does Acupuncture Effectively Reduce Insomnia
Does Acupuncture Effectively Reduce Insomnia There are many contributing factors that can cause
insomnia or loss of sleep. Whether it is due to medication, diet, illness or anxiety, "50 to 70 million
Americans suffer from sleep issues each year" (CDC, 2015). Multiple studies have been conducted
to see whether or not acupuncture effectively reduces insomnia.
Acupuncture is a modality that is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The Mayo Clinic describes
acupuncture as "the insertion of extremely thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the
body" (Staff, 2015). The specific points on the body that the needles are inserted are called
meridians. Each meridian is believed to be part of an energy pathway and acupuncture is believed ...

How Are Sleeping Aids For Individuals In Recovery From...
Sleeping Aids for Individuals in Recovery from Substance Abuse The use of any medication that has
the potential for misuse or abuse is of critical consideration when working with individuals in
recovery. Specifically, if an individual is open with a counselor, prescribing physician, or
psychiatrist, about their past substance abuse and dependency, they in turn have placed a large
amount of trust in these professionals related to appropriate treatment and decision–making. One of
the primary issues facing individuals recovering from substance abuse, particularly in the early
stages, is that of insomnia or sleep disorders. Kolla et Al. (2014) noted that while 47% of individuals
in the beginning of recovery experience insomnia, this number ... Show more content on

According to Jones, Knutson, and Haines (2003), when treating individuals in recovery,
nonpharmacological treatment should be the first line of treatment, with a heavy emphasis on the
avoidance of mood–altering substances.
Position on Topic My position on the topic with this population (and any population for that matter)
is that just as with benzodiazepines for generalized anxiety disorder, alternative options should be
initially explored. Jaffe et Al. (2004) discussed the higher abuse potential for benzodiazepines when
compared to non–benzodiazepine hypnotic sleeping medications, such as zolpidem, although there
is still abuse potential. One medication group that was noted as having virtually no abuse potential,
specifically with recovering individuals, was antihistamines, which could include diphenhydramine
and hydroxyzine (Jaffe et Al., 2004). In a recovering individual without any comorbid psychiatric
diagnoses, these should be considered a good initial course of action, along with lifestyle changes
and natural remedies, such as melatonin, a naturally occurring option with proven benefits related to
improved sleep latency and quality (Perry, Alexander, Liskow, & DeVane, 2007) Since sleep has
been demonstrated as so important in early recovery, it is important that it is addressed. What is even

Use of pharmacological agents in pediatric dentistry as sedatives.
As medicine progresses day by day so are the varieties of procedures that can be accomplished on
patients in order to improve quality of life. One of the areas of the health care system that has
developed the most is the dental field. Now a days, the diversity of dental procedures performed on
people of different ages is extraordinary. Dentists have also improved, not only their techniques
thanks to the advances in technology and new equipment that allows them to perform all the
different procedures, but as well as on their training. Dentists today, thanks to that intensive training;

Dental treatment requires a certain amount of time and it is difficult to keep a child still. Under these
circumstances dentists will often recommend some form of pharmacological sedation. For the most
part, dental procedures are ambulatory; meaning patients will go home shortly after the procedure is
done. To facilitate this, dentists use oral sedation or intranasal sedation instead of general anesthesia.
General anesthesia not only will significantly increase the cost of treatment, but also the risk as well.
The use of oral sedation or intranasal sedation represents an advantage for dentists, who can perform
a treatment that without sedation could not be accomplished. On the contrary, drug response from
patients represents a major risk that can not be ignored. Due to the great risk of advanced reactions
in patients after receiving a drug or a combination of drugs, researchers are constantly working on
finding better and safer sedative agents. In this paper I will discuss the findings on several research
papers in regards to safer and efficient sedatives for dental procedures on children.
Oral sedation is the simplest and also the most convenient method used to manage uncooperative
patients. The reason behind this is its easy way of administration (oral) and the lack of injections,
which is one of the major fears in children. Sedatives could be also administered in its gas form, but
that would

Essay On Why Ambien Visits America
Why Ambien related ER visits are increasing in America?
A recent study conducted by SAMHSA unit of the United States revealed that there was a steep
increase in the number of emergency–room visits owing to the intake of prescribed sleep
medications like Ambien. The study analyzed ER archives from 2005–2010, which indicated that
the ER visits related to Ambienhad risen by 220 percent over the five years. The study report
concluded that careful monitoring of drugs like Ambien is a necessity for safe use by the public.
This article further discusses and uncovers the reasons behind the rise in Ambien–related ER visits
in America.
The reason
Most of the researchers on the drug monitoring unit, SAMHSA had mentioned that a major portion
of the Ambien ER visits were of people who were already on other medications. Ambien, alone, was
not triggering any severe side effects. However, the drug when coupled with other drugs or
chemicals was able to trigger severe side effects that resulted in the spike of ER visits during that
particular period. This is the principle of Drug interaction, where a certain drug that you take may
change its properties based on the othermedications you take. This could amplify the risk associated
with the drug, ultimately leading to serious side effects. Ambien, as a drug has severe interactions
with other drugs, which are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Anterograde Amnesia In The Movie '50 First Dates'
Anterograde amnesia refers to a memory deficit from brain injury that prevents patients to store new
informations in their short term memories. The patients show normal memories for events that
occurred before the injury but has severely impaired ability to recall information about events that
occurred after the incident. Anterograde amnesia is reflected in the movie "50 first dates" through
the main character, Lucy Whitmore, whose memory lasts only a day because her memory stopped
on the day of car accident. (additional description) The movie, "50 first dates," contains valid
depiction of anterograde amnesia yet it also contains some dramatic points that is far from reality.
Although the movie, "50 first dates," was fairly dramatic, it accurately portrays the possible
struggles that patients may experience from anterograde amnesia. The main idea of the movie is that
the main character Lucy gets into a car accident on the day of her father's birthday. The accident
causes a severe brain injury to her temporal lobe and it leads her to suffer from anterograde amnesia.
Because memories of any events occurred after the accident fades away, Lucy wakes up every
morning thinking that it is October 13th, the day of a car accident. Lucy's family helps Lucy to
constantly relive the day before her accident to avoid a pain that Lucy may have as she discovers her
condition. On the other hand, Henry comes into her life thinking that it is better to update her with
important events through

their therapeutic dose. With the rise in the prescription of benzodiazepines for short–term insomnia
and anxiety relief, and the subsequent rise of cases featuring benzodiazepine abuse, it seems ever
more important that an alternative devoid of abuse and dependence potential is found, without
compromising effectiveness. Dependence is much more likely when used long–term, as tolerance is

The majority of GABAA receptors contain an alpha–1, 2, 3 or 5 subunits. The receptor allows for
the transmission of Cl– anions when its ligand, GABA, docks to it between the alpha and beta

chloride ions to move into the neuron, hyperpolarising it. The effect of this is to slow down the rate
of neuronal firing. It also contains other allosteric binding sites, allowing for benzodiazepines,
barbiturates, alcohol, meprobamate and other drugs to affect it. The subunit to which a

The Death Of A Sleeping Pill

  • 1. The Death Of A Sleeping Pill Alternative Views: There are conflicting views on the use of stilnox as a sleeping aid and the use of sleeping aids as the amount of people that have died as result of these drugs is slowly increasing. In America, a study by Scribbs Health, a non–profit organisation, estimates that, "500,000 'excess deaths' have been caused by taking drugs such as Ambien (American equivalent of stilnox) and Restoril". These deaths are a result of two main factors, unconscious behaviours and suicide. Commiting suicide using a sleeping pill is the preferred method for women as it causes the metabolic pathways throughout the body to start shutting down. These systems include the respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems and the result of such a widespread shut down is death. The drug is attributed with certain behaviours that occur while being unconscious. It has been reported by numerous patients that the drug results in sleep related behaviours such as, sleepwalking and has resulted in many deaths. Stilnox however can be beneficial to those that are effected by mental health issues and suffering from sleep deprivation. Sleep disturbance can be caused by numerous variables however, a main cause can be hormonal imbalance. Stilnox binds to receptors in the brain, which promotes drowsiness. In some cases it has also be found to improve the quality of life of some people that have been diagnosed with different mental disabilities. After administering the drug clear improvement can be seen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Barbiturates Hypnotic drugs produce sleeping effects on individuals. There are different groups of these sleeping aids. The most common of these groups are the barbiturates, benzodiazepines and non– benzodiazepines. Here, aim to take a look at these three groups and find which group is better for patients who are suffering from insomnia. Barbiturates Barbiturates affect the central nervous system and amongst the earliest medicines that appeared to treat sleeplessness. Not regarded among the best sleeping tablets, they are still prescribed in different parts of the world due to their simple availability and predictable action on the body. Barbiturates are also quite useful as anaesthetic agents and are also used for recreational purposes. They are replaced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are usually prescribed for a short duration, because they carry a risk of causing addiction and drug dependence. Long acting benzodiazepines are also great at treating anxiety and stress. Among all the sleeping drugs, diazepam (Valium) is perhaps the best known psychoactive drug in the world. It is highly effective and works with over 90% of the patients who are suffering from insomnia. The extreme efficacy of the drug however, is its downfall because careless use can produce drug dependence. Non–benzodiazepines The non–benzodiazepines represent the new class of hypnotic drugs. They are often termed as Z– drugs because their names start with the letter Z. Drugs such as Zopiclone and Zolpidem are known to produce less toxic effects on the body, when used for treating conditions of sleeplessness and psychological anxiety. The mechanism of action of these drugs however, is similar to that of the benzodiazepine family. All of the drugs belonging to this family modulate the GABA–A receptors in the nervous system of the patients. The main advantage of this drug family is that drug dependence occurs at a slower pace. These are the major subdivisions in this drug family: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Terri Schiavo, Nancy Cruzan and Karen Ann Quinlan; their names are synonymous with permanent vegetative state (PVS). The amazing technological advancements in modern medicine has been credited with keeping persons alive who in times past would have died, therefore this is remarkable for countless families. In the cases of the Quinlan's, the Cruzan's and many like them, families members find it unbearable to witness loved ones who linger indefinitely in PVS with little or no chance for recovery. There are many like Terri Schiavo's parents, who value the lives of their love ones no matter how limited their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 374, para. 3). According to John Collins Harvey, a senior research scholar and professor emeritus of medicine at Georgetown University, feeding tubes should be removed from patients in PVS because there is no hope for recovery. Harvey explains that the cerebral cortex the area of the brain that controls conscious thought, language, and sensory perception has been irreparably damaged by a lack of oxygen (Harvey, 2004). However, recent studies on DOC have revealed the difficulty of diagnosing PVS, especially because a few PVS patients recovered consciousness and demonstrated awareness as a result of drug therapies and functional imaging studies (Fisher & Appelbaum, 2010). Obviously, these patients were not in PVS, an irreversible condition. The awakening of persons after the administration of specific medications brings attention to the possibility that VS is often over diagnosed (Sara & Pistoia, 2010). "The differential diagnosis of disorders of consciousness is challenging. The rate of misdiagnosis is approximately 40%, and new methods are required to complement bedside testing, particularly if the patient's capacity to show behavioral signs of awareness is diminished" (Monti, Vanhaudenhuyse, Coleman, & Boly, 2010, para. 1). The Issue of Death The definition of death is another issue paramount to this discussion. • 39. Zopiclone Is A Drug First Developed By Rhone Poulenc Rore Zopiclone is a cyclopyrrolone drug first developed by Rhône–Poulenc Rore (1, page 220) in the early 1970s (2). It is classified as a GABA–A receptor agonist, and is a central nervous system depressant. Zopiclone binds onto subunits on the GABA–A receptor and modulates the opening of the chloride ion channels in the neuron cell membrane (3, page 1). By increasing the conductance of chloride ions and hyperpolarizing the neuron, the frequency of action potentials is reduced. This causes an inhibition of brain activity, causing zopiclone to have hypnotic, sedative, muscle relaxant, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects (4). Zopiclone acts much in the same way as benzodiazepines when used to treat insomnia, but was believed to have less adverse effects, and less potential for developing tolerance and addiction. As a result, it was first marketed as a better alternative to benzodiazepines. However, recent studies have revealed that it is unclear whether zopiclone shows improvements over benzodiazepines when assessed on therapeutic qualities and addiction potential (5, page 1). As a result, both zopiclone and benzodiazepines are included in schedule IV of the United States Controlled Substances Act (6). Zopiclone is known by several brand names, such as Imovane, Zimovane and Zimoclone (7). It is used to treat insomnia in adults arising from increased sleep latency, frequent awakenings during in the night, and premature awakening (3, page 1). Zopiclone alleviates the symptoms of ... However, there are treatments, both drug and non–drug, that can slow the progression of symptoms. Drug therapies include cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA receptor antagonists. Different medications are prescribed at different stages of the disease. Donepezil (Aricept), which prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical in the brain that helps with learning and memory, is a cholinesterase inhibitor that can be prescribed to treat a patient at any stage of the disease. Although Aricept can be used at any stage, drugs like Rivastigmine (Exelon) and Galantamine (Razadyne), also cholinesterase inhibitors, are only approved to treat the disease when it is mild or moderate. Memantine (Namenda) is a NMDA receptor antagonists that is used to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer's and improves some patient's ability to complete daily tasks. • 45. Effects Of Overmedication On Society Overmedication? The Impact on American Society In recent years, studies have shown that over medication has become prevalent in America. Overmedication is when a patient uses unnecessary or excessive amounts of medication. Unfortunately, a large number of people have died from over medication. This is caused by doctors or specialists prescribing too much medication to their patients, or by people taking too much medication to ease their pain without precaution. This not only affects a person physically but also mentally. If a person feels that medication is the only helping them, then they will keep taking those pills, resulting in the destruction of the body and mind. Plus millions of dollars are spent on prescription pills, which is another reason why there is so much over medication. Overmedication in America has a negative impact on society, which is leading to physical and mental damages. Overmedication is starting to take over the lives of children, due to being diagnosed with disorders and diseases. Since more disorders are being discovered, this leads towards more medication that has to be prescribed. "More than 6 million children are diagnosed with hyperactiveness such as ADHD, and 2 million of those children are between the age of 2–6. This leads to doctors prescribing these children stimulants such as Adderall or Ritalin to calm them down"(Cha). "More than 75% of children are receiving pills as treatment" (Cha). Jaffe et Al. (2004) discussed the higher abuse potential for benzodiazepines when compared to non–benzodiazepine hypnotic sleeping medications, such as zolpidem, although there is still abuse potential. One medication group that was noted as having virtually no abuse potential, specifically with recovering individuals, was antihistamines, which could include diphenhydramine and hydroxyzine (Jaffe et Al., 2004). As medicine progresses day by day so are the varieties of procedures that can be accomplished on patients in order to improve quality of life. One of the areas of the health care system that has developed the most is the dental field. Now a days, the diversity of dental procedures performed on people of different ages is extraordinary. Dentists have also improved, not only their techniques thanks to the advances in technology and new equipment that allows them to perform all the different procedures, but as well as on their training. Dentists today, thanks to that intensive training; are capable of screening for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dental treatment requires a certain amount of time and it is difficult to keep a child still. Under these circumstances dentists will often recommend some form of pharmacological sedation. For the most part, dental procedures are ambulatory; meaning patients will go home shortly after the procedure is done. To facilitate this, dentists use oral sedation or intranasal sedation instead of general anesthesia. General anesthesia not only will significantly increase the cost of treatment, but also the risk as well. The use of oral sedation or intranasal sedation represents an advantage for dentists, who can perform a treatment that without sedation could not be accomplished. On the contrary, drug response from patients represents a major risk that can not be ignored. Due to the great risk of advanced reactions in patients after receiving a drug or a combination of drugs, researchers are constantly working on finding better and safer sedative agents. In this paper I will discuss the findings on several research papers in regards to safer and efficient sedatives for dental procedures on children. Oral sedation is the simplest and also the most convenient method used to manage uncooperative patients. The reason behind this is its easy way of administration (oral) and the lack of injections, which is one of the major fears in children. Sedatives could be also administered in its gas form, but that would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Essay On Why Ambien Visits America Why Ambien related ER visits are increasing in America? A recent study conducted by SAMHSA unit of the United States revealed that there was a steep increase in the number of emergency–room visits owing to the intake of prescribed sleep medications like Ambien. The study analyzed ER archives from 2005–2010, which indicated that the ER visits related to Ambienhad risen by 220 percent over the five years. The study report concluded that careful monitoring of drugs like Ambien is a necessity for safe use by the public. This article further discusses and uncovers the reasons behind the rise in Ambien–related ER visits in America. The reason Most of the researchers on the drug monitoring unit, SAMHSA had mentioned that a major portion of the Ambien ER visits were of people who were already on other medications. Ambien, alone, was not triggering any severe side effects. However, the drug when coupled with other drugs or chemicals was able to trigger severe side effects that resulted in the spike of ER visits during that particular period. This is the principle of Drug interaction, where a certain drug that you take may change its properties based on the othermedications you take. This could amplify the risk associated with the drug, ultimately leading to serious side effects. Ambien, as a drug has severe interactions with other drugs, which are ... Anterograde Amnesia In The Movie '50 First Dates' Anterograde amnesia refers to a memory deficit from brain injury that prevents patients to store new informations in their short term memories. The patients show normal memories for events that occurred before the injury but has severely impaired ability to recall information about events that occurred after the incident. Anterograde amnesia is reflected in the movie "50 first dates" through the main character, Lucy Whitmore, whose memory lasts only a day because her memory stopped on the day of car accident. (additional description) The movie, "50 first dates," contains valid depiction of anterograde amnesia yet it also contains some dramatic points that is far from reality. Although the movie, "50 first dates," was fairly dramatic, it accurately portrays the possible struggles that patients may experience from anterograde amnesia. The main idea of the movie is that the main character Lucy gets into a car accident on the day of her father's birthday. The accident causes a severe brain injury to her temporal lobe and it leads her to suffer from anterograde amnesia. Because memories of any events occurred after the accident fades away, Lucy wakes up every morning thinking that it is October 13th, the day of a car accident. Lucy's family helps Lucy to constantly relive the day before her accident to avoid a pain that Lucy may have as she discovers her condition. On the other hand, Henry comes into her life thinking that it is better to update her with important events through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He has been in the facility for 3 years. My patient's weight is 156 lbs. and there were no major weight changes for the time he has been in the facility. My patient needs assistance with either wheelchair or a walker, is able to ambulate with or without a device. He is not allergic to anything, therefore, no modification to the medication is needed. The primary the patient is in the facility is because of a foot ulcer. The foot ulcer is unable to heal at a normal pace because he has diabetes. My patient did not take any medication prior to admission to the facility. One of the diagnosis included hypertension also known as high blood pressure. If not treated over time hypertension can cause heart disease and stroke. In order, to lower blood pressure a person can consume a healthy diet with less salt, exercise daily and take their medication. Usually, if a person's blood pressure is above 140/90 mmHg they are considered to have high blood pressure. My patient takes Lisinopril, it decreases blood pressure in hypertension, decrease preload, and afterload in cognitive heart failure. • 73. Zolpidem Research Paper Zolpidem is a short–term medicinal treatment for insomnia. It can be prescribed and is effective in initiating sleep in the consumer. It also appears to offer a temporary but effective relief of symptoms of aphasia, a collective term for a range of language disorders present in some survivors of strokes, and current research is implying that its presence in the body may bring consciousness to people in vegetative states. However, there are several negative effects such as uncomfortable side effects, withdrawal symptoms if dependency on the drug occurs, dangerously impaired driving ability the day after dosage and it is an effective, legal and easily obtainable "date rape" drug. As stated previously, it is possible to become dependent on drugs containing this substance. Huang, Lin and Chen (2007) state that a zolpidem–dependent patient they analysed was, within a year of being prescribed the drug, taking daily doses of 1000mg. She noticed anxiety, tremors and palpitation, and she soon increased dosage to 2000mg/day to relieve the symptoms. From here, on attempts at decreasing dependence, she suffered withdrawal–related seizures and amnesia. Also, ethical issues surround its distribution; for example, it is an effective "date rape drug" as it dissolves readily in alcoholic beverages and unlike the traditional drug for this use, the banned substance Rohypnol, zolpidem is legally obtainable in many countries by prescription; for example, in 2012 43.8 million prescriptions were filled in the United States. Zolpidem was infamously used for this purpose by Darren Sharper, a former National Football League player who slipped zolpidem into the drinks of four women whom he proceeded to rape. Emanuel, an attorney (2014) stated that Ambien has replaced roofies as the rape drug of choice as it has a short half–life of two to three hours and is difficult to ... The confusion stems from its paradoxical effect of being a hypnotic sedative in people with normal brain functions yet can increase speech ability in patients recovering from severe brain trauma, which seems contrary (Clauss and Nel, 2006). (2009) reported that the technology used to measure effectiveness of treatment with zolpidem demonstrated high amplitude theta and beta oscillations thin the peri–infarct region reducing in activity, improving cognitive and motor function. In another patient who suffered a stroke three years prior, the first prescribed dosage of 10mg of zolpidem caused a dramatic improvement in her speech, an improvement which relapsed the following morning until the next dosage of zolpidem was taken (Engl and Med, 2004). Whyte and Myers (2009) describe that zolpidem is also being studied to determine whether it has the ability to improve responsiveness or regional cerebral perfusion in patients in vegetative states. It has been reported to restore, albeit temporarily, consciousness to such patients and repeated dosage maintains consciousness (Interlandi, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Benzodiazepines Research Paper The benzodiazepines, with their anxiolytic, sedative, anticonvulsant and myorelaxant properties are commonly used in the fields of psychiatry and neurology. They were originally introduced as an alternative to meprobamate and the barbiturates, as their lethal dosage was only slightly higher than their therapeutic dose. With the rise in the prescription of benzodiazepines for short–term insomnia and anxiety relief, and the subsequent rise of cases featuring benzodiazepine abuse, it seems ever more important that an alternative devoid of abuse and dependence potential is found, without compromising effectiveness. Dependence is much more likely when used long–term, as tolerance is built up and the dosage escalates. Several alternatives exist for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The majority of GABAA receptors contain an alpha–1, 2, 3 or 5 subunits. The receptor allows for the transmission of Cl– anions when its ligand, GABA, docks to it between the alpha and beta subunits. The binding of GABA to its receptor enlarges the chloride channels, and so allowing more chloride ions to move into the neuron, hyperpolarising it. The effect of this is to slow down the rate of neuronal firing. It also contains other allosteric binding sites, allowing for benzodiazepines, barbiturates, alcohol, meprobamate and other drugs to affect it. The subunit to which a benzodiazepine binds is shown to contribute to its effects: binding at the alpha–1 or 5 subunits leads to sedation, while binding to the alpha–2 or 3 subunits is associated with ...
