Dear Colleague,
Put simply, Submarine Operations and Requirements 2012 is the best submarine event we have ever put together. As the
only event of its kind in Europe, Sub Ops 2012 provides a rare insight into the world of the submariner, his requirements, and
the lessons gleamed from recent operational experiences. It truly is an unmissable opportunity for senior military and industry
representatives to engage in a two-way discussion about the future direction of the submarine fleet.
As I am sure you will have noticed from the front of the brochure, we are delighted to welcome new, senior speakers to this years
panel, including Vice Admiral Rinaldo Veri (NATO), Rear Admiral Ian Corder (Royal Navy) and Rear Admiral Jose Luis Alano
(Philippine Navy). Discussing experiences and requirements emerging from the most up to date theatres and operations, it is a
fantastic opportunity to learn about and influence the future role of the submariner.
Alongside our exceptional speaker panel we are running a dedicated workshop day, with extended interactive sessions focusing on
the challenges of communication and area denial in submarine operations. Please see page three for more information on
these group sessions.
If you would like more details about any aspect of the event then please do not hesitate to contact our enquiries team on
+44 (0)207 368 9737, and remember if you book before the 27th of January, you could save up to £400 pounds. Until then,
I hope this brochure finds you well and I look forward to welcoming you to London in March.
Very Respectfully,
Matthew Smith
Portfolio Director

A2AD Zones -The Submarine's Role in Establishing and Degrading Them
Led By: Captain James Patton (Rtd), President, SUBMARINE TACTICS AND TECHNOLGY
More and more it’s becoming credible that technologies exist or are close to being fielded, which include the use of
submarines, that could enable a coastal nation to establish a “no fly/no sail” zone in its littorals that would keep air and surface
forces from having a significant effect on events ashore. A notable flaw in this “Anti-Access/Area Denial” (A2AD) concept is
its inability to exclude modern submarines. An issue of great importance then becomes how these naval assets, capable of
penetrating and operating within an A2AD zone, are to be controlled and employed to bring down that zone from within,
allowing the greater striking power of the previously excluded air and surface forces to safely enter.
It must be done right the first time, however, and there will not be time for the “learning curve” which preceded the U.S.
Submarine Force’s successes in WWII. As always, we must also “train like (and where) we would fight”, and practice the
necessary anti-A2AD TTPs in peacetime.
This workshop will stimulate discussion about what TTP variants are available and appropriate in a modern A2AD environment
established by a militarily competent entity, and suggest what offensive options are available to the submarines who have
successfully infiltrated that exclusion zone. Discussions will include the most effective sequencing of offensive actions plus
submarine survivability considerations when weighed against maximum persistency and minimum time-bandwidth products
of connectivity required.
By attending this workshop, you will :
Gain a detailed understanding of the challenges associated with utilizing submarines for A2AD operations
Isolate specific challenges relating to your vessels and identifying what TTP’s and solutions are available to help
	 combat these challenges.
Identify trends within the global submarine community, highlighting areas where partnership and co-operation would
	 be mutually beneficial going forward.
Workshop B 13:30-16.00
Workshop A 10:00-12.30
The Evolving Role, Nature and Importance of Submarine Communications
Led By: Dr John R Potter, Principal Scientist, Systems Technology Department,
Nato Underwater research centre
Submariners have, with good reason, traditionally been most reluctant to indulge in communications with the outside
world except under the most protected and necessary circumstances. The submarine role is now rapidly evolving. New
technologies are now making possible some types of communication, such as high-bandwidth at speed and depth, for the
first time. The combination of these two influences is rapidly re-shaping the operational paradigm.
This workshop will explore, with active contribution from the participants, key aspects of the following topics:
How is the evolving role of the submarine changing the nature of communications needs?
How is new technology changing the game for what is possible in submarine communications?
What are the essential types and performance measures for communication?
	 - covert/overt - passive/active
	 - high/low bandwidth - long/short range
	 - urgent/as-available -	High/Low fidelity
How important is it and what are the key features for submarine communications with various asset types and
how is this related to the performance metrics?
	 - Command centre - Aerial vehicles (including UAV)
	 - Surface vehicles (including USV) - Submerged vehicles (including AUV)
	 - Stationary assets
What are the new challenges and opportunities for covert (as in undetected, not merely encrypted) communications?

Can Canada Recover its
Submarine Fleet?
Intense debate has erupted this year over the
future of Canada’s submarine fleet now that all four
of its vessels are officially out of action at the same
time. A purchase of ageing platforms and a series
of technical and MRO problems has lumbered the
navy with rising costs, operational gaps, and public
disgruntlement. Read the article now!
The Role of the Submarine in Underwater Communication,
Networking and Surveillance – A NATO Perspective
Dr John Potter, Principal Scientist of the Systems Technology Department at the NATO Undersea Research Centre,
joins Defence IQ to talk about the evolving role of the submarine. One of the key challenges today for submariners is
underwater networking, how to bring the submarine more completely into the network and make it responsive. This
interview addresses how these challenges can be tackled, how close we are to successful underwater networking, and
what the advantages would be of full integration of the submarine. Listen to the interview now!

  • 2. For your booking enquiries contact us on +44 (0) 20 7368 9737 Dear Colleague, Put simply, Submarine Operations and Requirements 2012 is the best submarine event we have ever put together. As the only event of its kind in Europe, Sub Ops 2012 provides a rare insight into the world of the submariner, his requirements, and the lessons gleamed from recent operational experiences. It truly is an unmissable opportunity for senior military and industry representatives to engage in a two-way discussion about the future direction of the submarine fleet. As I am sure you will have noticed from the front of the brochure, we are delighted to welcome new, senior speakers to this years panel, including Vice Admiral Rinaldo Veri (NATO), Rear Admiral Ian Corder (Royal Navy) and Rear Admiral Jose Luis Alano (Philippine Navy). Discussing experiences and requirements emerging from the most up to date theatres and operations, it is a fantastic opportunity to learn about and influence the future role of the submariner. Alongside our exceptional speaker panel we are running a dedicated workshop day, with extended interactive sessions focusing on the challenges of communication and area denial in submarine operations. Please see page three for more information on these group sessions. If you would like more details about any aspect of the event then please do not hesitate to contact our enquiries team on +44 (0)207 368 9737, and remember if you book before the 27th of January, you could save up to £400 pounds. Until then, I hope this brochure finds you well and I look forward to welcoming you to London in March. • 3. Register now @ www.submarineoperations.com A2AD Zones -The Submarine's Role in Establishing and Degrading Them Led By: Captain James Patton (Rtd), President, SUBMARINE TACTICS AND TECHNOLGY More and more it’s becoming credible that technologies exist or are close to being fielded, which include the use of submarines, that could enable a coastal nation to establish a “no fly/no sail” zone in its littorals that would keep air and surface forces from having a significant effect on events ashore. A notable flaw in this “Anti-Access/Area Denial” (A2AD) concept is its inability to exclude modern submarines. An issue of great importance then becomes how these naval assets, capable of penetrating and operating within an A2AD zone, are to be controlled and employed to bring down that zone from within, allowing the greater striking power of the previously excluded air and surface forces to safely enter. It must be done right the first time, however, and there will not be time for the “learning curve” which preceded the U.S. Submarine Force’s successes in WWII. As always, we must also “train like (and where) we would fight”, and practice the necessary anti-A2AD TTPs in peacetime. This workshop will stimulate discussion about what TTP variants are available and appropriate in a modern A2AD environment established by a militarily competent entity, and suggest what offensive options are available to the submarines who have successfully infiltrated that exclusion zone. Discussions will include the most effective sequencing of offensive actions plus submarine survivability considerations when weighed against maximum persistency and minimum time-bandwidth products of connectivity required. By attending this workshop, you will : Gain a detailed understanding of the challenges associated with utilizing submarines for A2AD operations Isolate specific challenges relating to your vessels and identifying what TTP’s and solutions are available to help combat these challenges. Identify trends within the global submarine community, highlighting areas where partnership and co-operation would be mutually beneficial going forward. Workshop B 13:30-16.00 Workshop A 10:00-12.30 The Evolving Role, Nature and Importance of Submarine Communications Led By: Dr John R Potter, Principal Scientist, Systems Technology Department, Nato Underwater research centre Submariners have, with good reason, traditionally been most reluctant to indulge in communications with the outside world except under the most protected and necessary circumstances. The submarine role is now rapidly evolving. New technologies are now making possible some types of communication, such as high-bandwidth at speed and depth, for the first time. The combination of these two influences is rapidly re-shaping the operational paradigm. This workshop will explore, with active contribution from the participants, key aspects of the following topics: How is the evolving role of the submarine changing the nature of communications needs? How is new technology changing the game for what is possible in submarine communications? What are the essential types and performance measures for communication? - covert/overt - passive/active - high/low bandwidth - long/short range - urgent/as-available - High/Low fidelity How important is it and what are the key features for submarine communications with various asset types and how is this related to the performance metrics? - Command centre - Aerial vehicles (including UAV) - Surface vehicles (including USV) - Submerged vehicles (including AUV) - Stationary assets What are the new challenges and opportunities for covert (as in undetected, not merely encrypted) communications?
