(LUMCON) was formed in 1979 to coordinate and stimulate Louisiana's activities in marine research and education.
These observations suggest that BMA predominate in shallow sandy sediments and that phytodetritus predominates at muddy stations. Our results also suggest that the relative proportion of phytodetritus in the benthos was highest where phytoplankton biomass in the overlying water was greatest, independent of sediment type. The high biomass of BMA found on shoals suggests that benthic primary production on sandy sediments represents a potentially significant local source of sediment microalgal carbon that may be utilized by benthic consumers in continental shelf food webs. LUMCON's primary facilities are located at the DeFelice Marine Center in Cocodrie, approximately 85 miles southwest of New Orleans. This location, situated within the estuarine wetland complex of the Mississippi River delta plain between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, provides ready access to the most productive estuaries in the United States, to a variety of coastal environments, and to the open Gulf of Mexico.
LUMCON's DeFelice Marine Center is located at the end of LA Highway 56 in Cocodrie, LA (directions). We welcome you to visit us. Pamphlets that describe the Marine Center and our programs will greet you upon your arrival. Educational displays are arranged throughout the facility to provide information on the ecology, cultural history and economy of the region. Public hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm seven days a week
