The ASPCA shut down a large puppy mill in Needham, Alabama that was maintaining substandard conditions for over 130 dogs of various breeds. The dogs were found living in filthy conditions and many were malnourished and had medical issues. The rescued dogs received medical care and behavioral training to prepare them for adoption, and will now be divided among shelters in 11 states in an effort to find them permanent homes.

2.  The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals (ASPCA) undertakes a number of initiatives
to ensure that the lives of animals around the nation
are protected and that they receive the respect they
deserve. Part of the organization’s mission is to seek
out and shut down large breeding facilities that
maintain substandard conditions for animals,
establishments frequently known as puppy mills. Last
month, ASPCA officials shut down a puppy mill in
Needham, Alabama, and rescued more than 130 dogs
of several different breeds. The dogs were living in
filthy conditions, and many were malnourished and
had serious medical issues. Investigators also found
the remains of deceased puppies on the property.

3.  Over the past weeks, the dogs received
needed medical care, as well as behavioral
enrichment to prepare them for adoption into
loving homes. To ensure that these dogs find
permanent caretakers, they will be divided
among shelters and rescue groups in 11
states through the ASPCA Animal Relocation
and Transport Initiative. The organizations
will continue to care for the animals while
reaching out to the community in search of
people to adopt them.
