earlier explained, a full 15 of the 24 items Objectivism would disagree with. A large point of irony is
a person who was a registered as a Republican and embraced by so many Republicans, wasn't in line
with much of the points from the republican Platform of the most recent election before she
immigrated from Russia. At first it seems Objectivists would be in line since points 1 through 5 are
consistent. Some inconsistencies are however, exposed in these first few points. While improvement
of the merit system, item 3 is a point supported by Objectivists it is not something currently
Republicans agree with as evidenced by their protection of the so–called death tax. The legal

The ideas set forth in the book do "have important admirers, like House Budget Committee
Chairman Paul Ryan, R–Wis., and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. Recently,
House Speaker John Boehner channeled Rand when he said, 'Job creators in America basically are

oneself. This thought process, again sits in opposition to something many followers of Objectivism
tenants hold in high esteem, Christian values. Today's Republican party "platform called state court
decisions legalizing same–sex marriage 'an assault on the foundations of our society.' " This assault
is based supposedly from the Bibles objection to homosexuality. The Bible, however, would has

Who Is James Taggart In Atlas Shrugged
James Taggart in Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand In the novel Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, one of the
major philosophies that is instilled is that there are productive people in the world and non–
productive people. Rand makes it apparent that there are increasing numbers of ineffective
individuals who take advantage of the constructive people in society. James Taggart is the main
symbol that Rand utilises to represent the individuals in society who are unproductive, weak and
who thrive off other's success. James' first words in the novel are, "Don't bother me, don't bother me,
don't bother me" {{15}}, these words strongly establish his personality and how he evades his
responsibilities as the president of Taggart Transcontinental. Throughout the ... Show more content

After Dagny's resignation from Taggart Transcontinental, James randomly without any consideration
put an inexperienced individual in her place, Clifton Locey. Locey had made arrangements for Dr.
Charles Morrison to travel on a diesel–engine train to an important business meeting. The president
of Taggart Transcontinental, James, did not inquire in any means about this schedule, and was
abruptly awoken in the middle of the night by Dr. Morrison himself through an angry telegram.
James was highly intimidated by Morrison's words and called Locey to tell him to fix the situation
immediately as well as to tell Locey that he was never called in the night when Dagny was in
control. These words from James support, once again, the concept that he relies on more competent
individuals of society, and how he does not take responsibility when it is necessary. The words that
James said to Locey also imply that the success of Taggart Transcontinental was completely due to
Dagny, and how she ran the company. This point is magnified in the following actions taken by
James once he finds out that the Taggart Tunnel has collapsed, as well as the explosion between the
diesel–engine train and the Army Munitions killed everyone on board. James immediately contacts
Dagny though her assistant Eddie, and then he destroys Dagny's resignation letter once she arrives at
Taggart Transcontinental. James' actions are seen as highly manipulative, as well as irresponsible.
James ignored the extreme situations that were occurring at the company and used it to entice Dagny
to return to Taggart Transcontinental. These previously mentioned actions taken by James were
foreseen by his first words in the novel, which implied his evasion of his obligations, and his
destructive and selfish

Blame Piles On Driver of Tow Truck That Dragged a Texas Mom to Her Death
A week after the funeral of Natalie Servantes, San Antonio residents are still talking about the
incident that led to her death. They are piling blame on the tow truck driver who dragged her body
for about half a mile while towing her car. The 28–year–old woman saw her car being towed away
from a reserved spot she had parked a while earlier when she rushed to stop the tow truck driver.
The tow truck driver works for Atlas Towing. He arrived at the scene ready to remove the car from
Vista Del Norte's parking space.
The police say that Natalie Servantes met her death while chasing the tow truck. She was a mother
of a 10–year–old son. She was chasing the tow truck trying to get its driver to stop towing her car.
During the scuffle, the doilies underneath one of the vehicles caught her purse. It is then that she got
caught up, along with her purse.
On Wednesday, her father visited the scene of the accident for the first time since her death. He
described his daughter as a wonderful person who was known to raise the spirits of the people
around her. He has restrained ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is not yet clear what physical evidence the police gathered from the scene and elsewhere. The
towing company at the center of this investigation is also yet to comment on the details of the
accident. But it released a statement saying that it has a contract with the apartment complex to tow
cars parked around that compound. The tow truck driver has said that he was unaware that Servantes
was trapped behind him when he towed her car away. People expect that the footage of the tow
truck's video camera will clear things up. But according to media reports, Atlas Towing has been
reluctant to release the video footage. Investigators plan on visiting the company's offices with a

Atlas Shrugged Response
Questions Raised By the Book
Is this radical decline something that can happen in our world?
Is there virtue behind sacrifice? Specifically, is it moral to rush into a burning building to save a
stranger's child, even if you're risking your life without getting value in return?
Do humans not have an inclination to sin?
What are the parallels between the world in Atlas Shrugged and our own world?
Would I join Galt or stay and try to fight the looters?
Historical Impact of the Book and Its Author Ayn Rand's writing, including Atlas Shrugged, started a
major movement, deemed the Objectivist movement. It was an ideology that followed along the
same philosophy laid out in Rand's writings. According to some, it was more of a cult than a
political movement, and Rand was the leader. She became the head of the movement, but left most
of the speaking engagements to Nathaniel Branden. Nathaniel Branden became one of Rand's ...

She spent ten years writing the book. She did not take advice from editors. This is clear in her
writing. Rand tends to ramble in dialogue and description. She uses multiple paragraphs when she
could have only used a sentence or two. An example of this is John Galt's radio address to the
nation. It is a sixty page long manifesto that constantly repeats its ideas. The book would be much
more concise and easy to read if Rand would have taken advice from her editors. Another interesting
observation I have made about this novel is that it is written around Galt's radio address. The
pinnacle of the novel is the address, which is really Rand's manifesto. The point of the book is to get
the reader to the manifesto. After the manifesto, the plot of the novel becomes quite weak. It goes
from industrialists going on strike and the looters are trying to catch up, to John Galt getting tortured
and his crew breaking him out like it's a spy

Moral Justification Of Capitalism In Atlas Shrugged By Ayn...
Contrary to the frequent moral justification of capitalism as being altruistically for the "common
good", in Ayn Rand's essay, What is Capitalism (1965) and novel Atlas Shrugged, she defines the
moral justification of capitalism as the objective justice for all in society, independent of society as a
whole and entirely separate for each individual. Although it may result in benefits for the entirety of
the people, these benefits are a mere secondary consequence of each participant utilizing their
"individual rights" as recognized and protected solely by Capitalistic systems.
In order to successfully define capitalism there must first be a discussion on how it plays into Rand's
philosophy regarding human survival. In both Atlas Shrugged and What is Capitalism, Rand defines
human ingenuity, intelligence, and rationality as directly proportional to the success or suffering of a
person in society. These attributes, when filtered through each person's individual judgements,
convictions, and interests define their "individual rights" as a necessary component to their survival
(Rand 3). Rand clarifies that these rights are entirely egoistic and must be exercised as such for the
survival of the individual along with the continuous functioning of society. She also identifies those
unwilling or incapable of exercising these rights along with the attributes which contribute to them
as "looters", with the ability to survive only temporarily through dependance on others' rationality

Comparing Anthem, The Fountainhead And Atlas Shrugged
The Triumphant Characters of Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged
In reading the fiction works of Ayn Rand, one becomes quickly aware of her use of characterization
to display a set of mores that apply to a group in today's society she is describing. In Anthem, for
instance, even the names hold significance toward the point of the story. The name Liberty 5–3000,
a gross smear of the philosophy of her world, becomes The Golden One, and then Gaea in the eyes
of the protagonist. This use of a name, a face, to convey the message of a group becomes a common
thread through all four of Miss Rand's novels. The Fountainhead is no exception. Though the names
don't have quite the amount of significance, the characters presented are ... Show more content on

"Why are you saying this to me? That's not what you want to say. That's not what you did."
"That's why I'm saying it! Because that's what I did!"
Though Miss Rand's true thoughts about these two characters are known only to her, it comes across
to the reader that Henry had everything – except that total honesty to oneself that is required of an
artist of skill. He tried to save Roark from what he saw as a certain fate: his own.
To an observant reader, Peter Keating and Ellsworth Toohey have the most interesting interplay in
the book. A fine example of this can be found on page 60 where Peter says to Katie:
"You see, Katie, you don't know me. I'm the kind that uses people. I don't want to use you."
This is a sad commentary on the political system if there ever was one. The question 'who is using
who' constantly comes to mind when lines of this sort between characters of this sort show up in
Miss Rand's pages. Peter spends the part of his life covered by this story as a tool of the likes of
Toohey, and he still has the audacity to think that he is in power.
At this point in the book, however, little does the reader realize Toohey's power with people. The
scene where Peter tells Toohey that he 'sold' Dominique shows a very clear picture of a broken man
facing Toohey, his 'breaker':
"You're the only friend I've got. I ... I'm not even friendly with myself, but you are. With me, I mean,
aren't you, Ellsworth?"

The Contributions Of Atlas In The King Of The Titans
Due to the lose with the war against Zeus, he was punished for the rest of his lifetime. The
punishment was rather simple, but cruel in a matter. He was the one who challenged the gods and
failed. Atlas was punished for his wrongdoing, he is mentioned in many tales and myths, and he has
a well known family. Atlas is a Titan who represents the figure that holds the heavens upon his
shoulders. He was the leader of the Titans when they went to war with Zeus, but after they were
defeated his fate was to bear on his back forever, the cruel strength of the crushing world, and the
vault of the sky. Upon his shoulders the great pillar, that holds apart the earth and the heaven,, A
load not easy to be borne. The importance of Atlas in Greek Mythology was that he was the leader
of the Titans, he was the one who challenged the God Zeus. However after his defeat in the battle,
his new purpose to the Mythology was to bear the punishment of holding the heavens upon his
shoulder forever. Atlas and his brother Menoetius sided with the Titans against the other Olympians
and when the Titans were eventually defeated many of them were confined to Tartarus including
Atlas's brother. However Atlas had a different fate, and Zeus punished Atlas to hold the heavens on
his shoulders to prevent the earth from resuming its joints with the heavens. He was Atlas Telamon,
or 'enduring Atlas,' a name embodying his daily struggle and punishment. Gaia and Uranus gave

Theme Of Hercules In The Iliad
The theme of an epic poem or short story is arguably the literary element that has the greatest effect
on conflict in a story.
Theme is what the characters and the audience are supposed to take away after finishing the story. In
Hercules and The Iliad, the overall themes of each story help to almost determine the conflict to
come, and how that conflict will help to shape the character.
Many consider the main theme of The Iliad to be the very first line in the entire epic poem, in which
a muse sings a song about 'the wrath of Achilles'. This opening line of dialogue sets up the epic in a
way that enable a lot of conflict to be set up.
"No man alive could keep the dog–packs off you, not if they haul in ten, twenty times that ransom
and pile it here before me and promise fortunes more" (Beers 64).
In this quote, Achilles is brutally informing Hector that he will not return his body back to his family
once he has died. This reflects back onto the theme of 'the wrath of Achilles', demonstrates how one
person's wrath can lead to deadly conflicts.
In Hercules, one theme that is commonly found is persevering against all of the struggles that one
may encounter. In this epic poem, Hercules has to complete twelve challenges in order to prove he is
a virtuous man (Hamilton). These twelve challenges easily allows for one conflict after another to
occur throughout the entire story.
"By and by, no Geryon was there, but a huge snake, like one of those which Hercules had strangled

Extraordinary Potential of Man Revealed in Atlas Shrugged...
The Extraordinary Potential of Man Revealed in Atlas Shrugged
Freewill is the tenet on which men founded the United States of America, and the glory of "America

from the cup of American wealth, not the lazy plowman demanding government help. The inventor's
mind synthesizes, theorizes, and designs the American dream, not the indifferent, insolent mechanic.
The steel will of the industrialists propels the nation to greater heights, not the selfish arrogance of
the beggar. The men who carry the weight of the world, Atlas and his proteges, do so by their

Dagny's brother, Jim Taggart, is infected, and works against her plans to expand Taggart

conduct business with sucessful industrialists to the exclusion of less competitive and successful
tycoons. As Dagny travels from the steel metropolis of New York to the deserts of the Southwest,
Jim and his "Washington man" slow her attempts to bring prosperity to the fragmented company,
while she also works on a new railroad line, the John Galt. Why should Dagny try to drive people
out of business in her quest for financial success, Jim asks, if she has any sense of morality or
responsibility for the American people?
Rand tosses this question around for a while, before answering it with resounding clarity. In essence,
Dagny refuses to satisfy the desires of the people simply because they demand such right. In fact,
she, Rearden, and their fellow torchbearer Francisco D'Anconia only trade items, ideas, and
emotions of equal value to their own. In this way man can grow, reach his potential, and realize that
a truly positive outlook on life requires that one lives life, no matter how difficult, in accordance
with one's own morality and integrity. So, Rearden, Taggart, and other

What Is The Powerful Message In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
The Powerful Message of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
Capitalism, according to John Galt, is "mutual trade to mutual advantage," (Rand Atlas Shrugged
989) or as Adam Smith put it: "[trade] by mutual consent and to mutual advantage." In true
capitalism, the economy is strictly separated from the state, just as there is a separation between
church and state in the USA. This basic tenet of capitalism describes the only economic system that
can be morally justifiable. Communism, fascism, socialism, dictatorships and "regulated capitalism"
are all systems that breach upon an individual's basic rights, while capitalism respects and
recognizes a man's right to control the product of his mind. In her philosophical treatise Atlas ...

By utilizing hard–working and honest heroes and heroines such as Hank Rearden and Dagny
Taggart, Ayn Rand presents what really happens to the victims of the "needy."
In essence, capitalism is the only economic system that is compatible with individual freedom. In
every other form of economy, a person is, in one way or another, a slave to the non–entity known as
the "public good." In the anti–capitalist society of Atlas Shrugged, the Hank Reardens and the
Dagny Taggarts of the world are constantly at the mercy of the government's whims and fancies
because, whenever it deems that the "public good" is threatened, the government can justify any
action towards them. Points one and two of Directive 10–289 – where workers must stay where they
work and businesses must stay in operation – clearly illustrate how an anti–capitalist economy can
literally enslave its people "In the name of general welfare" (Rand Atlas Shrugged 505).
The right to life is the most important freedom an individual can have, and capitalism is the only
system that is consistent with this right. "Since man has to sustain his life by his own effort, the man
who has no right to the product of his effort has no means to sustain his life" (Rand "Man's Rights"
288). This necessarily leads to the notion of the absolute right to private property, the bedrock upon
which the moral and practical foundations of the capitalist system rest. By

The Picture Of Dorian Gray And Atlas Shrugged By Ayn Rand
It is a very well known trope of literature to pin characters against society or social expectations.
Nearly every piece of literature has some character who is displeased with how "everybody else"
does something, it does not make any difference what the thing is. Following this near necessary
pattern, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand have vital
characters who act differently than society hopes and expects. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian
Gray and Lord Henry Wotton are the main characters who represent the struggle of the individual
versus society, each in their own way. Lord Henry's philosophy is very self–centered, with his own
pleasures being central to all aspects of his life. This belief system rubs off on Dorian early in the
novel and as it progresses, Dorian seems to care less and less about how society perceives him. He
hides his true self away from society and throws common practice, even laws, out the window.
Dorian becomes a being who lives only to please himself through whatever means. Atlas Shrugged
has some self–centered characters of its own, stemming from Ayn Rand's philosophy of objectivism
and her belief that self–preservation and self–interest are the truest goals in life. Dagny Taggart and
Hank Rearden represent this belief Rand holds so dear. On the other hand, Jim Taggart is shown as
weak and nearly pathetic due to his need to please everyone and fear of blame. He conforms to
society so as to avoid conflict

Cloud Atlas
In David Mitchell's novel, Cloud Atlas, it chronicles six narratives set in the historical and recent
pasts and imagined futures, all interconnected wherever a later narrator encounters and absorbs the
story that preceded his own. Each of the six stories invents a world, and virtually invents a language
to describe it. Thus, in one of the most imaginative and rewarding novels in recent memory, the
author unforgettably explores issues of exploitation, tyranny, slavery, and genocide. The majority of
the novel focuses on the human soul. One's morality, connections with others, and rebirth. This is
done through several ways, in which the most obvious is the perspectives and how it is the same
soul just in different places in time. This is shown by the some of the characters remembering who
they are. Another way David Mitchell connects the soul between each person is the mentioning of a

Analysis Of The Book ' Atlas Shrugged ' By Ayn Rand

"Who is John Galt?"
Atlas Shrugged is a fictitious novel written by Ayn Rand. It was published in 1957 and is a work of
science fiction but also a great work of philosophy. It takes place in an unspecified time in the
future. In the beginning, we meet Eddie Willers as he 's walking to work. He gives a bum money and
is met with the question, "Who is John Galt?" The date is September 2nd. Eddie Willers speaks with
another important character, James Taggart, the president of Taggart Transcontinental Railroad.
They speak of the failing Rio Norte line and the Phoenix–Durango railroad taking all of the traffic in
Colorado and of Ellis Wyatt, a brilliant man who began an oil company there. We also learn who
Dagny Taggart is, the Operating–Vice–President of Taggart Transcontinental, as she is riding back to
New York on the Taggart Comet. She is met again with the phrase, "who is John Galt?" when the
Comet is stopped at a broken sign. Upon her return, she tells her brother James that she has become
tired of waiting for steel from Orren Boyle and has ordered from Rearden Steel in order to fix the
Rio Norte line. Instead of steel rails, she orders them of Rearden Metal, a new alloy which is
intended to be lighter, stronger, and less expensive than steel. Dagny tells him also that the San
Sebastián Line is going to be nationalized by the People 's State of Mexico and they are going to
take a loss of millions of dollars, this eventually happens and

Atlas Shrugged By Ayn Rand: A Literary Analysis
In the philosophical epic of Ayn Rand, entitled Atlas Shrugged, every phrase holds significant
meaning, all serving to prove a single argument. The title itself is in reference to the titan Atlas, who
was convicted to hold the weight of the world on his shoulders for eternity. To the reader, it seems
the act of Atlas shrugging suggests the delicate state of the world in said situation and it's
vulnerability to destruction. As in the myth of Atlas, in Rand's world, the economy is dependent
upon the innovative minds within industry. It is not until Part 3 of the novel that Rand reveals that
Atlas is represented by the productive intellectuals of the world. In the universe of Atlas Shrugged,
such people are the author's concept of ideal humans,

Analysis Of Ayn Rand's ' Atlas Shrugged '
TITLE
"When one acts on pity against justice, it is the good whom one punishes for the sake of the evil;
when one saves the guilty from suffering, it is the innocent whom one forces to suffer."
~ Ayn Rand Pity is a most misunderstood concept in the modern age. It is commonly termed a
virtue, which enables one to properly sympathize with his fellow man and take the just actions he
feels demanded of him to better the state of his pathetic peers. However, it seems that there is a more
decent way of conducting one's affairs in all aspects of life, as Ayn Rand demonstrates through her
characters in Atlas Shrugged. Ragnar Danneskjold, for one, despises the ideal of needs–based
rewards that Robin Hood embodies in favour of the "Trader Principle," which urges men to hold
their own minds as the ultimate standard and driving force in their economic life and their handling
of love. Ragnar so detests Robin Hood because his motives are rooted in pity, not profit. His feeling
is more explicitly understood after defining "pity;" it may be defined as, "a feeling of sympathy for
and condolences with a person because of the plight he is in" (Merriam–Webster). Further, to "offer
condolences" is "to suffer with" the recipient of said condolences. Therefore, to pity another and act
on this feeling by giving alms is to make oneself suffer with the pitied, and thus condone his
destitution. In the cases Ragnar is speaking of, it is clear that the one receiving the pity could assist
himself if

Money In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
In Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged the character Francisco d'Anconia views money as a tool and a
symbol; something that can only come about by the hard work and ambition of men. He feels that a
love of money is justified, and is liberal in his employment it because he sees no arbitrary value in
money itself. This contrasts sharply with the view of James Taggart who sees money as a necessary
evil; something that must be controlled, and forced to work with the people. James Taggart is afraid
of money and what it has the power to do, so he attempts to limit it. You can see how this reflects
Ayn Rand's own views on the difference between communism and capitalism.
The difference in views between these two men is at the most basic level; that Francisco wants to
make money while Taggart wants to have money. As I said before, to Francisco and to all the 'good'

They see money as its own beast. It is a necessary evil that must be controlled. Because they cannot
draw the connections between the money and its source they cannot justify the love of money. They
either acknowledge and embrace that what they do is looting and decide not to care, or like James
Taggart they remain in denial and self–deluded that what they are doing is for the "public good".
This is a reflection of Ayn Rand's own views on communism; the belief that money must be
controlled, and that if left to its own it will undoubtedly become a negative force, a detriment to
society. Because they cannot understand why money is valuable (though they acknowledge that it is)
they seek to have money as opposed to making money. This is why they attempt to freeze the state
of the nation, so that they may remain in an eternal state of "having" not realizing that there must be
motion and progress for money to be made and to hold value. They have the effect without realizing

Atlas Shrugged Quotes
The main conflict within this novel is the conflict of ideals between the heroes and villains of Atlas
Shrugged surrounding their motivation to do business. The heroes seek profit and personal success
from advancing in the business world, while the villains wish to work to improve the public good.
The heroes resisted the villains' attempts to push their thinking on them and their responses can be
summarized in Hank Rearden's quote, "The public good be damned, I will have no part in it!"
The quote comes from Hank Rearden's trial where he is being tried for breaking the law that
mandates the production and distribution from his mill. In the trial, the judges keep trying to use the
idea of the public good as a source of motivation and Rearden ... Show more content on

Galt came up with this idea while working at the Twenty First Century Motor Company, when the
heirs of the company took over and implemented their new plan of, "work according to ability, but
would be paid according to need," Galt does not agree with this plan and threatens to end it by,
"stopping the motor of the world." To achieve this goal, Galt begins to recruit the businessmen and
industrialists for America who have similar ideals and values to his own and convinces them to go
on strike and instead work only to provide for their simplest of needs. This theme of working not for
the good of the others, but for that of yourself is the central them of the novel and is what Rearden
implies in his quote. Galt eventually does bring a stop to the motor of the world as he begins to take
more and more of the industrialists out of the world and into hiding, and life in the outside world
slowly begins to crumble. This illustrates the dangers of making people work for others as
motivation to work and succeed. Their effort begins to decrease as the rewards for their hard work is
given to others instead. The events of the books show the dangers a world where the good of the
group is supported not by the creations and works of the individual, but by the taking from the
individual and giving to the public. Galt gives this warning to the world and it is an important theme
of the book and the quote, "If it is now the belief of my fellow man ... that their good requires a
victim, then I say, 'the public good be damned, I will have no part in it,'" confirms and declares that
the heroes will not be used by others for the success and survival of those who have not earned it.

Governments, businesses and individuals all have a duty to do what is beneficial for the community.
However, people have a duty to do what is beneficial for themselves. Sometimes determining what
is right for the community and what is right for yourself can cause serious conflicts. In the book
Atlas Shrugged, this conflict between self and community becomes so severe it causes worldwide
economic deterioration. This book has several themes which include capitalism, government
coercion and corruption. These themes create the major issues of the book, however, the main
premise of the book is individualism.

businesses. Businesses are no longer allowed to

Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
When Ayn Rand was twelve, her family lost their business to the Bolshevik reign, and Rand began
to develop ideas that, years later, would define one of the most influential and controversial
economic philosophies of the century. Rand's theory of Objectivism was introduced in her landmark
novel, Atlas Shrugged, which delved deeply into her ideas about business, government, and society.
While Rand's philosophy is considered to be incredibly controversial, her critics often display a
misunderstanding of her philosophies at their core. Many people criticize what seems to be a school
of thought that rewards the wealthy at the detriment of the poor, but in Rand's mind, business is the
representation of a free society, and a culmination of all the ... Show more content on

She makes a great point to differentiate between those who have inherited, or stumbled upon, their
success (who then squander and misuse it), and those who have worked hard and earned their
success. This cannot be illustrated more clearly than by her portrayal of the Taggart siblings. Jim
Taggart is a man who never worked a day in his life for what he has received, and it shows in his
inability to make logical choices and prioritize his company. His belief that others should be given
business despite their incompetence is one that shines through frequently.
"It isn't fair...That we always give our business to Rearden. It seems to me that we should give
somebody else a chance, too...We ought to help the smaller fellows develop. Otherwise, we're just
encouraging a monopoly" ["Atlas", 26]. Dagny's parting line to her brother is perhaps the best
example of Rand's belief of the self's importance over the whole, and an illustration of the key
difference between the siblings.
"I'm not interested in helping anybody. I want to make money." ["Atlas". 29]
Rand considered business to be the manifestation of one's hard working behavior, and as a someone
who valued this productivity, she became a great supporter of American big business after moving to

Individualism In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
In a world consisting of government–citizen power struggle; the philosophies of individualism,
capitalism, objectivism, and libertarianism play important roles in the lives of self–interest
advocates. Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged depicts a brilliant illustration of government takeover,
industrialist revenge, and the importance of the existence of "men of the mind" in the world in order
for society to function and prosper. Rand introduces the "men of the mind" in the story as those with
intellect, innovation, and great philosophy. Without these men, Rand argues, society and its ability to
prosper cannot function properly and therefore society is unable to flourish. Through this
philosophy, the powerful are identified as the creators, inventors, and great thinkers; interference by
officials and looters in attempts to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only is individualism praised in her novel; individualism takes dominance over everything else.
As rational self–interest is argued by Rand as one of the most important elements of a functioning
economy, individual interests should be favored above all other sacrifice. Due to the increasingly
controlling and oppressing government mandates, Galt and his followers refuse to support society
and therefore follow through with a resistance until their individualism is authorized as well as
widely acknowledged. John Galt demonstrates his position on independence and self–reliance when
he says "I swear by my life... and my love of it... that I will never for the sake of another man... nor
ask another man... to live... for mine" (Rand 672). Galt's self–interest and beliefs about the
importance of individualism symbolize nearly the entire novel's theme about objectivism. He is very
aware and confident that without the great minds that are vital to production, the world will collapse
and the socialist government cannot sustain its power any

Cloud Atlas
Time is "the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present and future
regarded as a whole" (Oxford Dictionary). David Mitchell uses his novel Cloud Atlas to explore this
complicated concept gravely. Even through the way the novel is laid out (in layers with only half of
each story given at first), each story noticeably intersects and interacts with shared characters –
either in the flesh or the reincarnations of them. Similarly, this layout exhibits an attempt at
postmodernist ideas as well as metafictional ideas as the stories and ideas constantly overlap even
when they are in different time frames. In Cloud Atlas, the stories and protagonists within "Half–
Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery" and "The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish" further
enhance the greater novel's concept of time through various measures. These measures include the
simple use of language, the exploration of reincarnation, the race against time, and memories and
how our remembrance of them affects us. Mitchell's choice of tense and narration exemplifies how
time and timelines affect each story. Luisa Rey's story is told in the present tense in the third person.
However, this story also incorporates focalization shifts and point of view changes between
characters. For Example, chapter seventeen is told from Sixsmith's perspective while the chapter
following is told from Bill Smoke's perspective. In Chapter 17, Sixsmith notices that the window of
his room is open and that

How Does Ayn Rand Use Gender In Atlas Shrugged
In her book, Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand uses a fictional story to critique the end result of several
commonplace ideologies. The book most closely deals with the ultimate result that stems from a
Marxist slogan, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." The world that
Rand creates has few differences from reality at its start, but as the story progresses, real world
ideologies are taken to the extreme, and societal collapse appears to be imminent. Much of this is
revealed through the thoughts and actions of a character that appears to be Rand's self–insert, Dagny
Taggart. Dagny finds herself alienated from both her peers and those in charge of industry based on
her beliefs and her gender. Rand uses Dagny's struggle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her gender also seems to contribute to the disdain that many characters hold for her. Because of
Dagny's refusal to excuse shortcomings for any reason, she pays little attention to any sexism in her
profession. Since much of the book is written with her thoughts at its forefront, Dagny's alienation
based on gender is easily forgotten. However, it is still evident. Rand does not ignore sexism; she
merely refuses to overplay it. One of the rare mentions of Dagny's gender in her work is found on
page 771, where Bertram Scudder introduces Dagny on his talk show with, "––the last descendant of
an illustrious name in our industrial history, the woman executive possible only in America." This
comment is brief, and appears harmless, but there is a deeper significance within it. Scudder uses the
words, "only possible in America," to attribute Dagny's success to her circumstance, detaching it
from her own effort. This is one of the ways that several characters in the book justify their
prejudice against anyone who is better off than them; they attribute any achievement or detriment to
circumstance, minimizing the accomplishments of others and excusing their own behavior. The
characters who exhibit gender bias against Dagny are not limited to men. In fact, much of the
sexism of which she is subject comes from other women. Readers are exposed to this in a brief
encounter with a minor character named Betty Pope, who expresses her disdain for Dagny, calling
her a "grease monkey. . .posing around like a big executive," (Rand, 73). She then comments on
Dagny's femininity, or lack thereof, implying that running a railroad is a task that is beneath a proper
woman. The next obvious drag on Dagny's femininity comes from her brother's second source of
companionship, his wife Cheryl. Cheryl Taggart's first encounter with Dagny is not a friendly one,
as she seems to feel the need to put Dagny in her place. She

Atlas And The Olympian In Ayn Rand's Atlas
Atlas As author Ayn Rand said, "If you saw Atlas, the titan who holds the world on his shoulders, if
you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still
trying to hold the world aloft with the last of his strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the
world bore down upon his shoulders – What would you tell him?"
Atlas was the son of Iapetus and Clymene. His siblings were Prometheus, Epimetheus, and
Menoetius. During the Titanomachy Atlas and Menoetius sided with the titans while his other
siblings, Prometheus and Epimetheus, sided with the Olympian gods. Therefore, Zeus condemned
him to stand eternally on the western side of Gaea holding the sky on his shoulders. Stories about
Atlas include Hesperides, Heracles, and Perseus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Hera's garden, tended by the Hesperides and guarded by the dragon, Ladon. Heracles asked Atlas to
bring the apples to him, during that time he would replace him in holding up the sky. Atlas went and
brought the apples to Heracles. Atlas then attempted to trick him into holding the sky forever.
However, Heracles managed to evade the trick and left with the apples.
In another story, Atlas refused to offer Perseus, son of Zeus, hospitality because he was told a

Atlas Shrugged And Brave New World
The book that I am comparing and contrasting to the extraordinary "Atlas Shrugged" is the book
"Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. "Atlas Shrugged" is about socialism. The Men in
Washington want everyone to be equal which is socialism. "Brave New World" is about people
making babies to be the mastermind of the World State. Atlas Shrugged and Brave New World are
similar but different
" Brave New World" was published in 1932. Aldous Huxley also wrote the books Visions, Books
and Thoughts, Crome Yellow, Darkness, and Doors of the Temple. Most of the novels written by
Aldous Huxley are classified as dystopian. Dystopian novels are novels that describe an imaginary
society that is as dehumanizing and as unpleasant as possible. "Atlas Shrugged" is written by Ayn
Rand. "Atlas Shrugged" was published in 1957. Ayn Rand also wrote the books Three Plays,
Anthem, The Fountainhead, Capitalism, We the Living, and For the New Intellectual. "Atlas
Shrugged" also has some dystopian tendencies within its 1,000 plus pages.
"Brave New World" is the story that takes place in the Central London Hatching and Conditioning
Center, where the Director of the Hatchery and one of his partners, Henry Foster, are giving a visit
to a gathering of young men. The young men find out about the Bokanovsky and Podsnap Processes
that permit the Hatchery to create a large number of almost indistinguishable human incipient
organisms. Amid the incubation period the incipient organisms go in jugs along a carpet

Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged : John Galt's Strike Of The Mind
"John Galt is Prometheus who changed his mind. After centuries of being torn by vultures in
payment for having brought to men the fire of the gods, he broke his chains and he withdrew his
fire–until the day when men withdraw their vultures" (517). Francisco's metaphorical explanation of
John Galt's identity symbolizes the major conflict in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged: John Galt's strike
of the mind. Throughout the novel, many characters ask "Who is John Galt?" as a rhetorical
expression that conveys a meaning similar to "who knows?" These characters live under the notion
that "knowledge is impossible to man" (133). They have shunned the mind as useless, and
established a collectivist society that caters to mindlessness through the exploitation of the mind.
These ideals are the antithesis to Rand's philosophy, Objectivism, which is developed around the
ideology that man's mind is the motor that keeps the world turning, and thus, the use of it is the
basic standard of morality. John Galt is the epitome of a man who lives and breathes Objectivist
ideals, and acts as Rand's cardinal mouthpiece for the philosophy and how it outlines the essential
rules for living on Earth. In response to the collectivists, John Galt vows to "stop the motor of the
world" (671)–to remove the fire, the men of mind, from society until the vultures, the exploiters,
understand that their backwards thinking will only lead to their demise, as well as, to the destruction
of civilization. The primary

Objectivism In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
Of all the contradictions of Rand's magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged, the greatest comes at the end of
John Galt's speech on objectivism. The main principle of individualists is to have value in life and
therefore act to live or to die (Smith). For example the looters and evil characters, like Lillian
Rearden, do not live, instead they leach off of others and try to get them as far away from their
values as they can. Rather than contribute to a new intellectual invention, she does everything she
can to demoralize her husband, Hank. Her fault is not putting value into her own life unlike the good
characters such as the strikers at Galt's Gulch oath is: "I swear by my Life and my love of it that I

The large scale society in Rand's novel does not work, but a small one is considered manageable if
and only if the social interactions are amongst rational individuals (Gotthelf 76). Another important
thing about these individuals is that they all have to have their own personal values, independence,
and rationalism (Gotthelf 76). All of the characters are self made intellects who have chosen to act
on living, even though killing millions for one's own gain is hardly rational, and now they have all
come together to beat the looters. As a collective. Before Dagny is allowed to leave Galt firsts asks
her to "give [them her] word that [she] will not disclose our secret or any part of it...' 'I give you my
word'" and she agrees (Rand Atlas 740). Instead of all going in their own selfish ways, the strikers
decide to fully band together for what they consider the greater good: defeating the looters. They are
now operating under the success of the Galt's Gulch group rather than for their independent values.
Even though Rand's philosophy vehemently pushes the idea the humans should reject having
commitments to and with other people, all of her perfect heroes are now working together and
basing their success on one another. Not only does this contradict objectivism, but also the
agreement that no man should live for another. Dagny could

What Are The Parasites Of Atlas Shrugged
The Parasites of Atlas Shrugged
In this world, and in the world of Ayn Rand's imagination, there are two kinds of people: those who
live to create, and those who wish to live as parasites feeding off the benefits of those creations. In
Atlas Shrugged, she explores what might happen when the creators of the world stop creating; the
parasites are left to try to live on their own. The novels that Miss Rand writes always reflect this sort
of thing. She writes of the battle between the two types of people as some write of the battles
between good and evil. In reality, each side of the battle can be equated in such terms. These
writings provide a detailed analysis of the two forces, and leave the reader with a profound sense of

He had himself convinced that he was doing the world a favor by holding back his sister, Dagny, an
idealistic Objectivist. Other demonstrations of this ludicrous practice are displayed in the characters
of the family of Hank Rearden, a successful and very driven steel manufacturer. His own mother, an
advocate of such practices as indiscriminate charity and pity, informed him of his supposed social
responsibility. She firmly believed that it was the duty of every man to give to every other man.
"Virtue is the giving of the undeserved," she said (265). These second–handers are the villains of the
novel, the only enemies of the true genius. The looters are those who sit back, allowing others to do
the work for them, so that they may simply return it with accusations concerning a lack of virtue and
social concern. They believe that goodness arises from living on one's knees, begging forgiveness
for a transgression that should not be considered wrong: success, greatness. Jim Taggart repeatedly
says things such as, "Why does he think he's better than the rest of us – he and that sister of mine,"
(899) in reference to people such as Hank Rearden, and of course, to Dagny. The only cause for
these statements, and this fear of greatness, is the evasion of the lacking of it in his own character.

Atlas Shrugged could happen in the near future and how this economic situation could not happen in
our future. The argument I am for is how this economic situation that took place in Atlas Shrugged
could happen in the near future. I believe it could happen but not to the extent that happened in the
movie. The reasons I believe that it could happen are because free trade could become a thing that
stops because of too many trade restrictions and we will only have to use the goods and services that
the United States has to offer. Another reason that I believe this could happen is because I think the
demand for goods and services with exceed the supply that the market can offer and prices will rise
because products are hard to come across and make. Another way this could happen is because of

Every so often, an author conceives a story which gives birth to an unprecedented philosophical
paradigm shift in the reader. Ayn Rand's classic novel, Atlas Shrugged, seductively captures the
quest of revolutionaries striving to achieve an ideal capitalist system. The producers of the world
strike until the existing altruistic society collapses. They strike until they are rid of all the freeloaders
who stand to benefit from their work. While the reader's shift may not originally be in agreement
with the extreme capitalistic view presented, Rand captures the reader's attention with the unyielding

It can only exist when individuals are no longer raped of the fruit of their labor, just to have it
redistributed to those in need. Redistributed to those who are not willing to work, but rather use their
tears, or steal for what they want. This is precisely the deeper moral meaning Ragnar Danneskjold
implies to Henry Reardon in the dark shadows of the willow tree; no longer can the producers of the
world continue to allow such blasphemy. Francisco d'Aconia eloquently explains the truth about the
evil in the world. He responds to an overheard comment made by Bertram Scudder, "'So you think
that money is the root of all evil?'...'Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool
of exchange, which can't exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them.
Money is the material shape of the principle that men who which to deal with one another must deal
by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by
tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who
produce. Is that what you consider evil?'" The evil of this utopia lies within people prospering from
the hard work of others, just as Robin Hood's legacy continues to influence the present society. For
this reason, it is essential Robin Hood be destroyed. A person does not physically die until their
impact on society is terminated. In the case of Robin Hood, although he ceases to exist, his

If a person or a company is wealthy and has earned their money, they are automatically labelled a
"big business" and are brutally criticized for not allowing others to have a chance in the "game of

they can do to get even bigger. Another popular view of money is that if a person or a business is not
making enough money that they are either not skilled enough to get a high paying job or they are too
lazy to get a better one. There are flaws in both views. Acts 20:35 says, "In all things I have shown

S Ebjectivist Statement In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
In this paper, I argue that Bioshock is a critique of John Galt's objectivist position as expressed in
Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand through John Galt argues that a man takes his own responsibility for his
own happiness as the moral purpose of his life behind his existence with productive achievement
and rational reason. In the videogame Bioshock, it shows the fall of the underwater city of Rapture
representing utopia city Atlas in Atlas Shrugged and illustrates the failure of John Galt's philosophy.

Cloud Atlas
The film Cloud Atlas directed by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski was
released in 2012 and is nearly three hours long. Since this movie has so many little details I will
only be writing a brief summary. This film is about is it revolves around the interwoven events of six
stories spanning different time periods. Every story involves one group of people feeling entitled to
oppress another group of people. The first story follows a lawyer named Adam Ewing in the year
1849, whose family is in the slave trade. And the events that lead to Ewing and his wife Tilda
deciding to leave the family slave trade and join the abolitionists. The second story is set in Britain
in the year 1936 and revolves around a composer named Robert Frobisher, ... Show more content on

Adam Ewing is telling that even the smallest thing is significant and counts for something. Thus,
one more person fighting for the cause means one step closer to equality. Additionally, the ideology
of the society that saw fit to regard it as a great piece art must match the one presented in this film.
In other words, a person who believes in an oppressive ideology would not think of this as a great
film. This is because it shows people fighting against the people that are oppressing them.
Lastly, the implied director is a term that refers to what kind of person the director is based on how a
film is directed. In this motion picture, the directors Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy
Wachowski are depicted as unreserved. Their unreserved mannerism can be seen by the way they
don't hold back with the graphic scenes shown in this movie. For example, one of the slaves being
whipped (in the first story) or the clones being slaughtered like cows in a factory (in the fifth story).
Furthermore, I can sympathise with the director's world view. This is because a lot of the brutality in
this movie can actually be found in parts of the world. I also can see the hardships that the characters
are going through to overcome the people who are exploiting them. Thus, showing the cold hard
truth of the oppression people are

Atlas Shrugged Summary

  • 1. Atlas Shrugged Summary earlier explained, a full 15 of the 24 items Objectivism would disagree with. A large point of irony is a person who was a registered as a Republican and embraced by so many Republicans, wasn't in line with much of the points from the republican Platform of the most recent election before she immigrated from Russia. At first it seems Objectivists would be in line since points 1 through 5 are consistent. Some inconsistencies are however, exposed in these first few points. While improvement of the merit system, item 3 is a point supported by Objectivists it is not something currently Republicans agree with as evidenced by their protection of the so–called death tax. The legal mechanism of the estate tax, commonly referred to as the death ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ideas set forth in the book do "have important admirers, like House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R–Wis., and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. Recently, House Speaker John Boehner channeled Rand when he said, 'Job creators in America basically are on strike.'" Self–interest is not necessarily about being selfish but rather doing what is best for oneself. This thought process, again sits in opposition to something many followers of Objectivism tenants hold in high esteem, Christian values. Today's Republican party "platform called state court decisions legalizing same–sex marriage 'an assault on the foundations of our society.' " This assault is based supposedly from the Bibles objection to homosexuality. The Bible, however, would has strong statements against adultery. Here again it is disingenuous for Atlas Shrugged main characters to be heroes rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Who Is James Taggart In Atlas Shrugged James Taggart in Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand In the novel Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, one of the major philosophies that is instilled is that there are productive people in the world and non– productive people. Rand makes it apparent that there are increasing numbers of ineffective individuals who take advantage of the constructive people in society. James Taggart is the main symbol that Rand utilises to represent the individuals in society who are unproductive, weak and who thrive off other's success. James' first words in the novel are, "Don't bother me, don't bother me, don't bother me" {{15}}, these words strongly establish his personality and how he evades his responsibilities as the president of Taggart Transcontinental. Throughout the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After Dagny's resignation from Taggart Transcontinental, James randomly without any consideration put an inexperienced individual in her place, Clifton Locey. Locey had made arrangements for Dr. Charles Morrison to travel on a diesel–engine train to an important business meeting. The president of Taggart Transcontinental, James, did not inquire in any means about this schedule, and was abruptly awoken in the middle of the night by Dr. Morrison himself through an angry telegram. James was highly intimidated by Morrison's words and called Locey to tell him to fix the situation immediately as well as to tell Locey that he was never called in the night when Dagny was in control. These words from James support, once again, the concept that he relies on more competent individuals of society, and how he does not take responsibility when it is necessary. The words that James said to Locey also imply that the success of Taggart Transcontinental was completely due to Dagny, and how she ran the company. This point is magnified in the following actions taken by James once he finds out that the Taggart Tunnel has collapsed, as well as the explosion between the diesel–engine train and the Army Munitions killed everyone on board. James immediately contacts Dagny though her assistant Eddie, and then he destroys Dagny's resignation letter once she arrives at Taggart Transcontinental. James' actions are seen as highly manipulative, as well as irresponsible. James ignored the extreme situations that were occurring at the company and used it to entice Dagny to return to Taggart Transcontinental. These previously mentioned actions taken by James were foreseen by his first words in the novel, which implied his evasion of his obligations, and his destructive and selfish ... • 5. Atlas Tow Blame Piles On Driver of Tow Truck That Dragged a Texas Mom to Her Death A week after the funeral of Natalie Servantes, San Antonio residents are still talking about the incident that led to her death. They are piling blame on the tow truck driver who dragged her body for about half a mile while towing her car. The 28–year–old woman saw her car being towed away from a reserved spot she had parked a while earlier when she rushed to stop the tow truck driver. The tow truck driver works for Atlas Towing. He arrived at the scene ready to remove the car from Vista Del Norte's parking space. The police say that Natalie Servantes met her death while chasing the tow truck. She was a mother of a 10–year–old son. She was chasing the tow truck trying to get its driver to stop towing her car. During the scuffle, the doilies underneath one of the vehicles caught her purse. It is then that she got caught up, along with her purse. On Wednesday, her father visited the scene of the accident for the first time since her death. He described his daughter as a wonderful person who was known to raise the spirits of the people around her. He has restrained ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The towing company at the center of this investigation is also yet to comment on the details of the accident. The tow truck driver has said that he was unaware that Servantes was trapped behind him when he towed her car away. People expect that the footage of the tow truck's video camera will clear things up. But according to media reports, Atlas Towing has been reluctant to release the video footage. • 7. Atlas Shrugged Response Questions Raised By the Book Is this radical decline something that can happen in our world? Is there virtue behind sacrifice? Specifically, is it moral to rush into a burning building to save a stranger's child, even if you're risking your life without getting value in return? Do humans not have an inclination to sin? What are the parallels between the world in Atlas Shrugged and our own world? Would I join Galt or stay and try to fight the looters? Historical Impact of the Book and Its Author Ayn Rand's writing, including Atlas Shrugged, started a major movement, deemed the Objectivist movement. It was an ideology that followed along the same philosophy laid out in Rand's writings. According to some, it was more of a cult than a political movement, and Rand was the leader. She became the head of the movement, but left most of the speaking engagements to Nathaniel Branden. Nathaniel Branden became one of Rand's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She spent ten years writing the book. She did not take advice from editors. This is clear in her writing. Rand tends to ramble in dialogue and description. She uses multiple paragraphs when she could have only used a sentence or two. An example of this is John Galt's radio address to the nation. It is a sixty page long manifesto that constantly repeats its ideas. The book would be much more concise and easy to read if Rand would have taken advice from her editors. Another interesting observation I have made about this novel is that it is written around Galt's radio address. The pinnacle of the novel is the address, which is really Rand's manifesto. The point of the book is to get the reader to the manifesto. After the manifesto, the plot of the novel becomes quite weak. It goes from industrialists going on strike and the looters are trying to catch up, to John Galt getting tortured and his crew breaking him out like it's a spy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Moral Justification Of Capitalism In Atlas Shrugged By Ayn... Contrary to the frequent moral justification of capitalism as being altruistically for the "common good", in Ayn Rand's essay, What is Capitalism (1965) and novel Atlas Shrugged, she defines the moral justification of capitalism as the objective justice for all in society, independent of society as a whole and entirely separate for each individual. Although it may result in benefits for the entirety of the people, these benefits are a mere secondary consequence of each participant utilizing their "individual rights" as recognized and protected solely by Capitalistic systems. In order to successfully define capitalism there must first be a discussion on how it plays into Rand's philosophy regarding human survival. In both Atlas Shrugged and What is Capitalism, Rand defines human ingenuity, intelligence, and rationality as directly proportional to the success or suffering of a person in society. These attributes, when filtered through each person's individual judgements, convictions, and interests define their "individual rights" as a necessary component to their survival (Rand 3). Rand clarifies that these rights are entirely egoistic and must be exercised as such for the survival of the individual along with the continuous functioning of society. She also identifies those unwilling or incapable of exercising these rights along with the attributes which contribute to them as "looters", with the ability to survive only temporarily through dependance on others' rationality ... • 11. Comparing Anthem, The Fountainhead And Atlas Shrugged The Triumphant Characters of Anthem, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged In reading the fiction works of Ayn Rand, one becomes quickly aware of her use of characterization to display a set of mores that apply to a group in today's society she is describing. In Anthem, for instance, even the names hold significance toward the point of the story. The name Liberty 5–3000, a gross smear of the philosophy of her world, becomes The Golden One, and then Gaea in the eyes of the protagonist. This use of a name, a face, to convey the message of a group becomes a common thread through all four of Miss Rand's novels. The Fountainhead is no exception. Though the names don't have quite the amount of significance, the characters presented are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Why are you saying this to me? That's not what you want to say. That's not what you did." "That's why I'm saying it! Because that's what I did!" Though Miss Rand's true thoughts about these two characters are known only to her, it comes across to the reader that Henry had everything – except that total honesty to oneself that is required of an artist of skill. He tried to save Roark from what he saw as a certain fate: his own. To an observant reader, Peter Keating and Ellsworth Toohey have the most interesting interplay in the book. A fine example of this can be found on page 60 where Peter says to Katie: "You see, Katie, you don't know me. I'm the kind that uses people. I don't want to use you." This is a sad commentary on the political system if there ever was one. The question 'who is using who' constantly comes to mind when lines of this sort between characters of this sort show up in Miss Rand's pages. Peter spends the part of his life covered by this story as a tool of the likes of Toohey, and he still has the audacity to think that he is in power. At this point in the book, however, little does the reader realize Toohey's power with people. The scene where Peter tells Toohey that he 'sold' Dominique shows a very clear picture of a broken man facing Toohey, his 'breaker': "You're the only friend I've got. I ... I'm not even friendly with myself, but you are. With me, I mean, aren't you, Ellsworth?"

  • 16. The Contributions Of Atlas In The King Of The Titans Due to the lose with the war against Zeus, he was punished for the rest of his lifetime. The punishment was rather simple, but cruel in a matter. He was the one who challenged the gods and failed. Atlas was punished for his wrongdoing, he is mentioned in many tales and myths, and he has a well known family. Atlas is a Titan who represents the figure that holds the heavens upon his shoulders. He was the leader of the Titans when they went to war with Zeus, but after they were defeated his fate was to bear on his back forever, the cruel strength of the crushing world, and the vault of the sky. Upon his shoulders the great pillar, that holds apart the earth and the heaven,, A load not easy to be borne. The importance of Atlas in Greek Mythology was that he was the leader of the Titans, he was the one who challenged the God Zeus. However after his defeat in the battle, his new purpose to the Mythology was to bear the punishment of holding the heavens upon his shoulder forever. Atlas and his brother Menoetius sided with the Titans against the other Olympians and when the Titans were eventually defeated many of them were confined to Tartarus including Atlas's brother. However Atlas had a different fate, and Zeus punished Atlas to hold the heavens on his shoulders to prevent the earth from resuming its joints with the heavens. He was Atlas Telamon, or 'enduring Atlas,' a name embodying his daily struggle and punishment. Gaia and Uranus gave birth to many children and among them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Scientists could study anything so long as they had the capability to do so, businessmen could sell any product so long as it sold, and hard work was praised and respected. The setting of the game was based on the philosophy of Ayn Rand which is objectivism, and also on her book "Atlas Shrugged." While shooting enemies in a game can be an entertaining activity, Bioshock decided to add more elements to its game to make it more compelling to play and even a core philosophy; a belief and concept that the game revolves around. • 22. Theme Of Hercules In The Iliad The theme of an epic poem or short story is arguably the literary element that has the greatest effect on conflict in a story. Theme is what the characters and the audience are supposed to take away after finishing the story. In Hercules and The Iliad, the overall themes of each story help to almost determine the conflict to come, and how that conflict will help to shape the character. Many consider the main theme of The Iliad to be the very first line in the entire epic poem, in which a muse sings a song about 'the wrath of Achilles'. This opening line of dialogue sets up the epic in a way that enable a lot of conflict to be set up. "No man alive could keep the dog–packs off you, not if they haul in ten, twenty times that ransom and pile it here before me and promise fortunes more" (Beers 64). In this quote, Achilles is brutally informing Hector that he will not return his body back to his family once he has died. This reflects back onto the theme of 'the wrath of Achilles', demonstrates how one person's wrath can lead to deadly conflicts. In Hercules, one theme that is commonly found is persevering against all of the struggles that one may encounter. In this epic poem, Hercules has to complete twelve challenges in order to prove he is a virtuous man (Hamilton). These twelve challenges easily allows for one conflict after another to occur throughout the entire story. The Extraordinary Potential of Man Revealed in Atlas Shrugged Freewill is the tenet on which men founded the United States of America, and the glory of "America the Beautiful" stems from the unlocked potential of its people. Why should Dagny try to drive people out of business in her quest for financial success, Jim asks, if she has any sense of morality or responsibility for the American people? Rand tosses this question around for a while, before answering it with resounding clarity. In essence, Dagny refuses to satisfy the desires of the people simply because they demand such right. What Is The Powerful Message In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged The Powerful Message of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged Capitalism, according to John Galt, is "mutual trade to mutual advantage," (Rand Atlas Shrugged 989) or as Adam Smith put it: "[trade] by mutual consent and to mutual advantage." In true capitalism, the economy is strictly separated from the state, just as there is a separation between church and state in the USA. This basic tenet of capitalism describes the only economic system that can be morally justifiable. Communism, fascism, socialism, dictatorships and "regulated capitalism" are all systems that breach upon an individual's basic rights, while capitalism respects and recognizes a man's right to control the product of his mind. In her philosophical treatise Atlas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By utilizing hard–working and honest heroes and heroines such as Hank Rearden and Dagny Taggart, Ayn Rand presents what really happens to the victims of the "needy." In essence, capitalism is the only economic system that is compatible with individual freedom. In every other form of economy, a person is, in one way or another, a slave to the non–entity known as the "public good." In the anti–capitalist society of Atlas Shrugged, the Hank Reardens and the Dagny Taggarts of the world are constantly at the mercy of the government's whims and fancies because, whenever it deems that the "public good" is threatened, the government can justify any action towards them. Points one and two of Directive 10–289 – where workers must stay where they work and businesses must stay in operation – clearly illustrate how an anti–capitalist economy can literally enslave its people "In the name of general welfare" (Rand Atlas Shrugged 505). The right to life is the most important freedom an individual can have, and capitalism is the only system that is consistent with this right. "Since man has to sustain his life by his own effort, the man who has no right to the product of his effort has no means to sustain his life" (Rand "Man's Rights" 288). This necessarily leads to the notion of the absolute right to private property, the bedrock upon which the moral and practical foundations of the capitalist system rest. By ... • 30. The Picture Of Dorian Gray And Atlas Shrugged By Ayn Rand It is a very well known trope of literature to pin characters against society or social expectations. Nearly every piece of literature has some character who is displeased with how "everybody else" does something, it does not make any difference what the thing is. Following this near necessary pattern, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand have vital characters who act differently than society hopes and expects. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian Gray and Lord Henry Wotton are the main characters who represent the struggle of the individual versus society, each in their own way. Lord Henry's philosophy is very self–centered, with his own pleasures being central to all aspects of his life. This belief system rubs off on Dorian early in the novel and as it progresses, Dorian seems to care less and less about how society perceives him. He hides his true self away from society and throws common practice, even laws, out the window. Dorian becomes a being who lives only to please himself through whatever means. Atlas Shrugged has some self–centered characters of its own, stemming from Ayn Rand's philosophy of objectivism and her belief that self–preservation and self–interest are the truest goals in life. Dagny Taggart and Hank Rearden represent this belief Rand holds so dear. On the other hand, Jim Taggart is shown as weak and nearly pathetic due to his need to please everyone and fear of blame. Cloud Atlas In David Mitchell's novel, Cloud Atlas, it chronicles six narratives set in the historical and recent pasts and imagined futures, all interconnected wherever a later narrator encounters and absorbs the story that preceded his own. Each of the six stories invents a world, and virtually invents a language to describe it. Thus, in one of the most imaginative and rewarding novels in recent memory, the author unforgettably explores issues of exploitation, tyranny, slavery, and genocide. The majority of the novel focuses on the human soul. One's morality, connections with others, and rebirth. This is done through several ways, in which the most obvious is the perspectives and how it is the same soul just in different places in time. • 34. Analysis Of The Book ' Atlas Shrugged ' By Ayn Rand Kila Browning Sociology 23 May 2016 "Who is John Galt?" Atlas Shrugged is a fictitious novel written by Ayn Rand. It was published in 1957 and is a work of science fiction but also a great work of philosophy. It takes place in an unspecified time in the future. In the beginning, we meet Eddie Willers as he 's walking to work. He gives a bum money and is met with the question, "Who is John Galt?" The date is September 2nd. Eddie Willers speaks with another important character, James Taggart, the president of Taggart Transcontinental Railroad. They speak of the failing Rio Norte line and the Phoenix–Durango railroad taking all of the traffic in Colorado and of Ellis Wyatt, a brilliant man who began an oil company there. We also learn who Dagny Taggart is, the Operating–Vice–President of Taggart Transcontinental, as she is riding back to New York on the Taggart Comet. She is met again with the phrase, "who is John Galt?" when the Comet is stopped at a broken sign. Upon her return, she tells her brother James that she has become tired of waiting for steel from Orren Boyle and has ordered from Rearden Steel in order to fix the Rio Norte line. Instead of steel rails, she orders them of Rearden Metal, a new alloy which is intended to be lighter, stronger, and less expensive than steel. • 38. Analysis Of Ayn Rand's ' Atlas Shrugged ' TITLE "When one acts on pity against justice, it is the good whom one punishes for the sake of the evil; when one saves the guilty from suffering, it is the innocent whom one forces to suffer." ~ Ayn Rand Pity is a most misunderstood concept in the modern age. It is commonly termed a virtue, which enables one to properly sympathize with his fellow man and take the just actions he feels demanded of him to better the state of his pathetic peers. However, it seems that there is a more decent way of conducting one's affairs in all aspects of life, as Ayn Rand demonstrates through her characters in Atlas Shrugged. Ragnar Danneskjold, for one, despises the ideal of needs–based rewards that Robin Hood embodies in favour of the "Trader Principle," which urges men to hold their own minds as the ultimate standard and driving force in their economic life and their handling of love. Ragnar so detests Robin Hood because his motives are rooted in pity, not profit. His feeling is more explicitly understood after defining "pity;" it may be defined as, "a feeling of sympathy for and condolences with a person because of the plight he is in" (Merriam–Webster). Further, to "offer condolences" is "to suffer with" the recipient of said condolences. Therefore, to pity another and act on this feeling by giving alms is to make oneself suffer with the pitied, and thus condone his destitution. In the cases Ragnar is speaking of, it is clear that the one receiving the pity could assist himself if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Money In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged In Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged the character Francisco d'Anconia views money as a tool and a symbol; something that can only come about by the hard work and ambition of men. He feels that a love of money is justified, and is liberal in his employment it because he sees no arbitrary value in money itself. This contrasts sharply with the view of James Taggart who sees money as a necessary evil; something that must be controlled, and forced to work with the people. James Taggart is afraid of money and what it has the power to do, so he attempts to limit it. You can see how this reflects Ayn Rand's own views on the difference between communism and capitalism. The difference in views between these two men is at the most basic level; that Francisco wants to make money while Taggart wants to have money. This is a reflection of Ayn Rand's own views on communism; the belief that money must be controlled, and that if left to its own it will undoubtedly become a negative force, a detriment to society. Because they cannot understand why money is valuable (though they acknowledge that it is) they seek to have money as opposed to making money. The heroes resisted the villains' attempts to push their thinking on them and their responses can be summarized in Hank Rearden's quote, "The public good be damned, I will have no part in it!" To achieve this goal, Galt begins to recruit the businessmen and industrialists for America who have similar ideals and values to his own and convinces them to go on strike and instead work only to provide for their simplest of needs. This theme of working not for the good of the others, but for that of yourself is the central them of the novel and is what Rearden implies in his quote. Galt eventually does bring a stop to the motor of the world as he begins to take more and more of the industrialists out of the world and into hiding, and life in the outside world slowly begins to crumble. This illustrates the dangers of making people work for others as motivation to work and succeed. Their effort begins to decrease as the rewards for their hard work is given to others instead. The events of the books show the dangers a world where the good of the group is supported not by the creations and works of the individual, but by the taking from the individual and giving to the public. Rand's theory of Objectivism was introduced in her landmark novel, Atlas Shrugged, which delved deeply into her ideas about business, government, and society. While Rand's philosophy is considered to be incredibly controversial, her critics often display a misunderstanding of her philosophies at their core. Jim Taggart is a man who never worked a day in his life for what he has received, and it shows in his inability to make logical choices and prioritize his company. His belief that others should be given business despite their incompetence is one that shines through frequently. "It isn't fair...That we always give our business to Rearden. • 50. Cloud Atlas Time is "the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present and future regarded as a whole" (Oxford Dictionary). David Mitchell uses his novel Cloud Atlas to explore this complicated concept gravely. Even through the way the novel is laid out (in layers with only half of each story given at first), each story noticeably intersects and interacts with shared characters – either in the flesh or the reincarnations of them. Similarly, this layout exhibits an attempt at postmodernist ideas as well as metafictional ideas as the stories and ideas constantly overlap even when they are in different time frames. In Cloud Atlas, the stories and protagonists within "Half– Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery" and "The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish" further enhance the greater novel's concept of time through various measures. These measures include the simple use of language, the exploration of reincarnation, the race against time, and memories and how our remembrance of them affects us. Mitchell's choice of tense and narration exemplifies how time and timelines affect each story. Luisa Rey's story is told in the present tense in the third person. However, this story also incorporates focalization shifts and point of view changes between characters. The book most closely deals with the ultimate result that stems from a Marxist slogan, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." The world that Rand creates has few differences from reality at its start, but as the story progresses, real world ideologies are taken to the extreme, and societal collapse appears to be imminent. Since much of the book is written with her thoughts at its forefront, Dagny's alienation based on gender is easily forgotten. However, it is still evident. Rand does not ignore sexism; she merely refuses to overplay it. One of the rare mentions of Dagny's gender in her work is found on page 771, where Bertram Scudder introduces Dagny on his talk show with, "––the last descendant of an illustrious name in our industrial history, the woman executive possible only in America." This comment is brief, and appears harmless, but there is a deeper significance within it. Scudder uses the words, "only possible in America," to attribute Dagny's success to her circumstance, detaching it from her own effort. This is one of the ways that several characters in the book justify their prejudice against anyone who is better off than them; they attribute any achievement or detriment to circumstance, minimizing the accomplishments of others and excusing their own behavior. The characters who exhibit gender bias against Dagny are not limited to men. In fact, much of the sexism of which she is subject comes from other women. Readers are exposed to this in a brief encounter with a minor character named Betty Pope, who expresses her disdain for Dagny, calling her a "grease monkey. . .posing around like a big executive," (Rand, 73). She then comments on Dagny's femininity, or lack thereof, implying that running a railroad is a task that is beneath a proper woman. Hesperides were goddess–nymphs entrusted with protecting Hera's garden, the Hyades were responsible for rain, Pleiades were seven sisters who eventually became constellations, Calypso lived on the island Ogygia, where Odysseus stayed for many years. Heracles was sent to bring golden apples from Hera's garden, tended by the Hesperides and guarded by the dragon, Ladon. Heracles asked Atlas to bring the apples to him, during that time he would replace him in holding up the sky. Atlas went and brought the apples to Heracles. Atlas then attempted to trick him into holding the sky forever. However, Heracles managed to evade the trick and left with the apples. In another story, Atlas refused to offer Perseus, son of Zeus, hospitality because he was told a prophecy that a son of Zeus would someday steal his daughter's golden apples. Insulted, Perseus showed him the severed head of Medusa, which had the power to turn all who looked into stone. Atlas then turned to stone. "Atlas Shrugged" is about socialism. The Men in Washington want everyone to be equal which is socialism. "Brave New World" is about people making babies to be the mastermind of the World State. Atlas Shrugged and Brave New World are similar but different " Brave New World" was published in 1932. Aldous Huxley also wrote the books Visions, Books and Thoughts, Crome Yellow, Darkness, and Doors of the Temple. Most of the novels written by Aldous Huxley are classified as dystopian. Dystopian novels are novels that describe an imaginary society that is as dehumanizing and as unpleasant as possible. "Atlas Shrugged" is written by Ayn Rand. "Atlas Shrugged" was published in 1957. Ayn Rand also wrote the books Three Plays, Anthem, The Fountainhead, Capitalism, We the Living, and For the New Intellectual. "Atlas Shrugged" also has some dystopian tendencies within its 1,000 plus pages. "Brave New World" is the story that takes place in the Central London Hatching and Conditioning Center, where the Director of the Hatchery and one of his partners, Henry Foster, are giving a visit to a gathering of young men. The young men find out about the Bokanovsky and Podsnap Processes that permit the Hatchery to create a large number of almost indistinguishable human incipient organisms. • 58. Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged : John Galt's Strike Of The Mind "John Galt is Prometheus who changed his mind. After centuries of being torn by vultures in payment for having brought to men the fire of the gods, he broke his chains and he withdrew his fire–until the day when men withdraw their vultures" (517). Francisco's metaphorical explanation of John Galt's identity symbolizes the major conflict in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged: John Galt's strike of the mind. Throughout the novel, many characters ask "Who is John Galt?" as a rhetorical expression that conveys a meaning similar to "who knows?" These characters live under the notion that "knowledge is impossible to man" (133). They have shunned the mind as useless, and established a collectivist society that caters to mindlessness through the exploitation of the mind. These ideals are the antithesis to Rand's philosophy, Objectivism, which is developed around the ideology that man's mind is the motor that keeps the world turning, and thus, the use of it is the basic standard of morality. John Galt is the epitome of a man who lives and breathes Objectivist ideals, and acts as Rand's cardinal mouthpiece for the philosophy and how it outlines the essential rules for living on Earth. In response to the collectivists, John Galt vows to "stop the motor of the world" (671)–to remove the fire, the men of mind, from society until the vultures, the exploiters, understand that their backwards thinking will only lead to their demise, as well as, to the destruction of civilization. • 60. Objectivism In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged Of all the contradictions of Rand's magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged, the greatest comes at the end of John Galt's speech on objectivism. The main principle of individualists is to have value in life and therefore act to live or to die (Smith). For example the looters and evil characters, like Lillian Rearden, do not live, instead they leach off of others and try to get them as far away from their values as they can. Rather than contribute to a new intellectual invention, she does everything she can to demoralize her husband, Hank. Her fault is not putting value into her own life unlike the good characters such as the strikers at Galt's Gulch oath is: "I swear by my Life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The large scale society in Rand's novel does not work, but a small one is considered manageable if and only if the social interactions are amongst rational individuals (Gotthelf 76). Another important thing about these individuals is that they all have to have their own personal values, independence, and rationalism (Gotthelf 76). All of the characters are self made intellects who have chosen to act on living, even though killing millions for one's own gain is hardly rational, and now they have all come together to beat the looters. As a collective. Before Dagny is allowed to leave Galt firsts asks her to "give [them her] word that [she] will not disclose our secret or any part of it...' 'I give you my word'" and she agrees (Rand Atlas 740). Instead of all going in their own selfish ways, the strikers decide to fully band together for what they consider the greater good: defeating the looters. They are now operating under the success of the Galt's Gulch group rather than for their independent values. Even though Rand's philosophy vehemently pushes the idea the humans should reject having commitments to and with other people, all of her perfect heroes are now working together and basing their success on one another. Not only does this contradict objectivism, but also the agreement that no man should live for another. Dagny could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Are The Parasites Of Atlas Shrugged The Parasites of Atlas Shrugged In this world, and in the world of Ayn Rand's imagination, there are two kinds of people: those who live to create, and those who wish to live as parasites feeding off the benefits of those creations. In Atlas Shrugged, she explores what might happen when the creators of the world stop creating; the parasites are left to try to live on their own. The novels that Miss Rand writes always reflect this sort of thing. She writes of the battle between the two types of people as some write of the battles between good and evil. In reality, each side of the battle can be equated in such terms. These writings provide a detailed analysis of the two forces, and leave the reader with a profound sense of vitality ... Other demonstrations of this ludicrous practice are displayed in the characters of the family of Hank Rearden, a successful and very driven steel manufacturer. His own mother, an advocate of such practices as indiscriminate charity and pity, informed him of his supposed social responsibility. She firmly believed that it was the duty of every man to give to every other man. "Virtue is the giving of the undeserved," she said (265). These second–handers are the villains of the novel, the only enemies of the true genius. The looters are those who sit back, allowing others to do the work for them, so that they may simply return it with accusations concerning a lack of virtue and social concern. They believe that goodness arises from living on one's knees, begging forgiveness for a transgression that should not be considered wrong: success, greatness. Jim Taggart repeatedly says things such as, "Why does he think he's better than the rest of us – he and that sister of mine," (899) in reference to people such as Hank Rearden, and of course, to Dagny. The only cause for these statements, and this fear of greatness, is the evasion of the lacking of it in his own character. Atlas Shrugged Economy Atlas Shrugged Essay In this essay I will be explaining how this economic situation in the movie Atlas Shrugged could happen in the near future and how this economic situation could not happen in our future. The argument I am for is how this economic situation that took place in Atlas Shrugged could happen in the near future. I believe it could happen but not to the extent that happened in the movie. The reasons I believe that it could happen are because free trade could become a thing that stops because of too many trade restrictions and we will only have to use the goods and services that the United States has to offer. Another reason that I believe this could happen is because I think the demand for goods and services with exceed the supply that the market can offer and prices will rise because products are hard to come across and make. Another way this could happen is because of communism the government will demand that people only produce things that will help the government ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They could also argue and say that Oligopolies would collaborate and make sure they make things needed to stop the economic situation. • 68. Ayn Rand 's Atlas Shrugged Every so often, an author conceives a story which gives birth to an unprecedented philosophical paradigm shift in the reader. Ayn Rand's classic novel, Atlas Shrugged, seductively captures the quest of revolutionaries striving to achieve an ideal capitalist system. The producers of the world strike until the existing altruistic society collapses. They strike until they are rid of all the freeloaders who stand to benefit from their work. While the reader's shift may not originally be in agreement with the extreme capitalistic view presented, Rand captures the reader's attention with the unyielding motivation, and passion–fueled force her characters exemplify. In particular, she creatively illuminates the desire within a person to transcend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can only exist when individuals are no longer raped of the fruit of their labor, just to have it redistributed to those in need. Redistributed to those who are not willing to work, but rather use their tears, or steal for what they want. This is precisely the deeper moral meaning Ragnar Danneskjold implies to Henry Reardon in the dark shadows of the willow tree; no longer can the producers of the world continue to allow such blasphemy. Francisco d'Aconia eloquently explains the truth about the evil in the world. He responds to an overheard comment made by Bertram Scudder, "'So you think that money is the root of all evil?'...'Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can't exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who which to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is that what you consider evil?'" The evil of this utopia lies within people prospering from the hard work of others, just as Robin Hood's legacy continues to influence the present society. For this reason, it is essential Robin Hood be destroyed. A person does not physically die until their impact on society is terminated. In the case of Robin Hood, although he ceases to exist, his ... Dagny Taggart, the movie's main character, serves as the vice president of the Taggart Transcontinental railroad company. One of the company's rail lines, the Rio Norte Line that runs to Colorado, is not operational and has a lot of accidents, so Dagny works to make changes to revive it. While Dagny thinks the company should cut ties with its existing steel provider, her brother James, the president of Taggart Transcontinental, wants to maintain business ties with Orren Boyle's Steel because of his own personal relationship with that company's leadership. Dagny decides to cancel the company's order with Orren Boyle's and signs with Rearden Steel instead because they are offering a new product called Rearden Metal that she thinks could improve the Rio Norte Line. The government is able to force Rearden out of the market with the "Equalization of Opportunities" law mandates that the company give up all of its mines. Francisco D Anconia In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, Francisco d'Anconia, a highly intelligent and extremely perspicacious industrialist, makes his moral values clear and known throughout the book. From d'Anconia's first encounters with Dagny Taggart as children to his speech about money at James and Cherryl's wedding, Francisco never tried to hide what he thought about the world and what the looters were doing (Rand 90, 380). Even when everyone seemed to be turning against him, he continued to do what needed to be done; prove the point that money encourages people and is needed as a crucial part of modern exchanges. When Francisco said, "The words 'to make money' hold the essence of human morality," he meant that human morality rests on the shoulders of how people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a person or a company is wealthy and has earned their money, they are automatically labelled a "big business" and are brutally criticized for not allowing others to have a chance in the "game of life". In this view, having money makes a person a monster, only focusing on themselves and what they can do to get even bigger. Another popular view of money is that if a person or a business is not making enough money that they are either not skilled enough to get a high paying job or they are too lazy to get a better one. There are flaws in both views. • 76. S Ebjectivist Statement In Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged In this paper, I argue that Bioshock is a critique of John Galt's objectivist position as expressed in Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand through John Galt argues that a man takes his own responsibility for his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life behind his existence with productive achievement and rational reason. In the videogame Bioshock, it shows the fall of the underwater city of Rapture representing utopia city Atlas in Atlas Shrugged and illustrates the failure of John Galt's philosophy. Since this movie has so many little details I will only be writing a brief summary. This film is about is it revolves around the interwoven events of six stories spanning different time periods. Every story involves one group of people feeling entitled to oppress another group of people. The first story follows a lawyer named Adam Ewing in the year 1849, whose family is in the slave trade. And the events that lead to Ewing and his wife Tilda deciding to leave the family slave trade and join the abolitionists. The second story is set in Britain in the year 1936 and revolves around a composer named Robert Frobisher, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adam Ewing is telling that even the smallest thing is significant and counts for something. Thus, one more person fighting for the cause means one step closer to equality. Additionally, the ideology of the society that saw fit to regard it as a great piece art must match the one presented in this film. In other words, a person who believes in an oppressive ideology would not think of this as a great film. This is because it shows people fighting against the people that are oppressing them. Lastly, the implied director is a term that refers to what kind of person the director is based on how a film is directed. In this motion picture, the directors Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski are depicted as unreserved. Their unreserved mannerism can be seen by the way they don't hold back with the graphic scenes shown in this movie. For example, one of the slaves being whipped (in the first story) or the clones being slaughtered like cows in a factory (in the fifth story). Furthermore, I can sympathise with the director's world view. This is because a lot of the brutality in this movie can actually be found in parts of the world. I also can see the hardships that the characters are going through to overcome the people who are exploiting them. Thus, showing the cold hard truth of the oppression people are ...
