After Dagny's resignation from Taggart Transcontinental, James randomly without any consideration
put an inexperienced individual in her place, Clifton Locey. Locey had made arrangements for Dr.
Charles Morrison to travel on a diesel–engine train to an important business meeting. The president
of Taggart Transcontinental, James, did not inquire in any means about this schedule, and was
abruptly awoken in the middle of the night by Dr. Morrison himself through an angry telegram.
James was highly intimidated by Morrison's words and called Locey to tell him to fix the situation
immediately as well as to tell Locey that he was never called in the night when Dagny was in
control. These words from James support, once again, the concept that he relies on more competent
individuals of society, and how he does not take responsibility when it is necessary. The words that
James said to Locey also imply that the success of Taggart Transcontinental was completely due to
Dagny, and how she ran the company. This point is magnified in the following actions taken by
James once he finds out that the Taggart Tunnel has collapsed, as well as the explosion between the
diesel–engine train and the Army Munitions killed everyone on board. James immediately contacts
Dagny though her assistant Eddie, and then he destroys Dagny's resignation letter once she arrives at
Taggart Transcontinental. James' actions are seen as highly manipulative, as well as irresponsible.
James ignored the extreme situations that were occurring at the company and used it to entice Dagny
to return to Taggart Transcontinental. These previously mentioned actions taken by James were
foreseen by his first words in the novel, which implied his evasion of his obligations, and his

from a reserved spot she had parked a while earlier when she rushed to stop the tow truck driver.

She spent ten years writing the book. She did not take advice from editors. This is clear in her
writing. Rand tends to ramble in dialogue and description. She uses multiple paragraphs when she
could have only used a sentence or two. An example of this is John Galt's radio address to the
nation. It is a sixty page long manifesto that constantly repeats its ideas. The book would be much
more concise and easy to read if Rand would have taken advice from her editors. Another interesting
observation I have made about this novel is that it is written around Galt's radio address. The
pinnacle of the novel is the address, which is really Rand's manifesto. The point of the book is to get
the reader to the manifesto. After the manifesto, the plot of the novel becomes quite weak. It goes
from industrialists going on strike and the looters are trying to catch up, to John Galt getting tortured
and his crew breaking him out like it's a spy

good", in Ayn Rand's essay, What is Capitalism (1965) and novel Atlas Shrugged, she defines the

whole and entirely separate for each individual. Although it may result in benefits for the entirety of
the people, these benefits are a mere secondary consequence of each participant utilizing their

In order to successfully define capitalism there must first be a discussion on how it plays into Rand's
philosophy regarding human survival. In both Atlas Shrugged and What is Capitalism, Rand defines
human ingenuity, intelligence, and rationality as directly proportional to the success or suffering of a
person in society. These attributes, when filtered through each person's individual judgements,
convictions, and interests define their "individual rights" as a necessary component to their survival
(Rand 3). Rand clarifies that these rights are entirely egoistic and must be exercised as such for the
survival of the individual along with the continuous functioning of society. She also identifies those
unwilling or incapable of exercising these rights along with the attributes which contribute to them
as "looters", with the ability to survive only temporarily through dependance on others' rationality

In reading the fiction works of Ayn Rand, one becomes quickly aware of her use of characterization
to display a set of mores that apply to a group in today's society she is describing. In Anthem, for
instance, even the names hold significance toward the point of the story. The name Liberty 5–3000,
a gross smear of the philosophy of her world, becomes The Golden One, and then Gaea in the eyes
of the protagonist. This use of a name, a face, to convey the message of a group becomes a common

Though Miss Rand's true thoughts about these two characters are known only to her, it comes across
to the reader that Henry had everything – except that total honesty to oneself that is required of an
artist of skill. He tried to save Roark from what he saw as a certain fate: his own.
To an observant reader, Peter Keating and Ellsworth Toohey have the most interesting interplay in
the book. A fine example of this can be found on page 60 where Peter says to Katie:
"You see, Katie, you don't know me. I'm the kind that uses people. I don't want to use you."
This is a sad commentary on the political system if there ever was one. The question 'who is using
who' constantly comes to mind when lines of this sort between characters of this sort show up in
Miss Rand's pages. Peter spends the part of his life covered by this story as a tool of the likes of
Toohey, and he still has the audacity to think that he is in power.
At this point in the book, however, little does the reader realize Toohey's power with people. The
scene where Peter tells Toohey that he 'sold' Dominique shows a very clear picture of a broken man
facing Toohey, his 'breaker':
"You're the only friend I've got. I ... I'm not even friendly with myself, but you are. With me, I mean,
aren't you, Ellsworth?"

It is a very well known trope of literature to pin characters against society or social expectations.
Nearly every piece of literature has some character who is displeased with how "everybody else"
does something, it does not make any difference what the thing is. Following this near necessary
pattern, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand have vital
characters who act differently than society hopes and expects. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian
Gray and Lord Henry Wotton are the main characters who represent the struggle of the individual
versus society, each in their own way. Lord Henry's philosophy is very self–centered, with his own
pleasures being central to all aspects of his life. This belief system rubs off on Dorian early in the
novel and as it progresses, Dorian seems to care less and less about how society perceives him. He
hides his true self away from society and throws common practice, even laws, out the window.
Dorian becomes a being who lives only to please himself through whatever means. Atlas Shrugged

"Who is John Galt?"
Atlas Shrugged is a fictitious novel written by Ayn Rand. It was published in 1957 and is a work of
science fiction but also a great work of philosophy. It takes place in an unspecified time in the
future. In the beginning, we meet Eddie Willers as he 's walking to work. He gives a bum money and
is met with the question, "Who is John Galt?" The date is September 2nd. Eddie Willers speaks with
another important character, James Taggart, the president of Taggart Transcontinental Railroad.
They speak of the failing Rio Norte line and the Phoenix–Durango railroad taking all of the traffic in
Colorado and of Ellis Wyatt, a brilliant man who began an oil company there. We also learn who
Dagny Taggart is, the Operating–Vice–President of Taggart Transcontinental, as she is riding back to
New York on the Taggart Comet. She is met again with the phrase, "who is John Galt?" when the
Comet is stopped at a broken sign. Upon her return, she tells her brother James that she has become

The accomplishment that I think that sparked the most realization in me is the Atlas program I was
accepted into last year. Atlas means Adirondack Teen Leadership and Services. With Atlas it made
me learn team building skills and how to work with people I didn´t know. Atlas also made me
realize how much I like helping people. When we did our community service project at the nursing
home I loved it so much because we were helping by earning money to buy christmas gifts for all
the residents, we wrapped the present and baked cookies for all the staff. It was so much fun just to
help the nursing home because most people just ignore the people. Atlas pushed me out of my

In the movie adaptation of Atlas Shrugged, the story takes place in a grim society that is in a severe
economic decline. Dagny Taggart, the movie's main character, serves as the vice president of the
Taggart Transcontinental railroad company. One of the company's rail lines, the Rio Norte Line that
runs to Colorado, is not operational and has a lot of accidents, so Dagny works to make changes to
revive it. While Dagny thinks the company should cut ties with its existing steel provider, her
brother James, the president of Taggart Transcontinental, wants to maintain business ties with Orren
Boyle's Steel because of his own personal relationship with that company's leadership. Dagny
decides to cancel the company's order with Orren Boyle's and signs with Rearden Steel instead
because they are offering a new product called Rearden Metal that she thinks could improve the Rio

If a person or a company is wealthy and has earned their money, they are automatically labelled a

The film Cloud Atlas directed by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski was
released in 2012 and is nearly three hours long. Since this movie has so many little details I will
only be writing a brief summary. This film is about is it revolves around the interwoven events of six
stories spanning different time periods. Every story involves one group of people feeling entitled to
oppress another group of people. The first story follows a lawyer named Adam Ewing in the year

Adam Ewing is telling that even the smallest thing is significant and counts for something. Thus,
one more person fighting for the cause means one step closer to equality. Additionally, the ideology
of the society that saw fit to regard it as a great piece art must match the one presented in this film.
In other words, a person who believes in an oppressive ideology would not think of this as a great
film. This is because it shows people fighting against the people that are oppressing them.
Lastly, the implied director is a term that refers to what kind of person the director is based on how a
film is directed. In this motion picture, the directors Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy
Wachowski are depicted as unreserved. Their unreserved mannerism can be seen by the way they
don't hold back with the graphic scenes shown in this movie. For example, one of the slaves being
whipped (in the first story) or the clones being slaughtered like cows in a factory (in the fifth story).
Furthermore, I can sympathise with the director's world view. This is because a lot of the brutality in
this movie can actually be found in parts of the world. I also can see the hardships that the characters
