2. Een vraagje…
• Wie gelooft in God?
• Wie is Christen?
• Katholiek?
• Wie denkt dat er evolutie van diersoorten
heeft plaatsgevonden?
• Wie denkt dat het menselijk DNA voortkomt
uit een evolutieproces?
6. Kunnen geloof & natuurwetenschap
samen gaan? (antwoord 1)
• Ten diepste: God is Logos
• Galileo: God heeft twee boeken geschreven,
de Bijbel en dat van de natuur. Die twee
spreken elkaar niet tegen.
• We kunnen wel zélf denkfouten maken.
– (We zijn niet allemaal Cruijf:
“ik heb enorme moeite me te vergissen”)
9. Waarom is het belangrijk
om JA te zeggen?
• Voor anderen & mijzelf: academici willen geen
gespleten persoonlijkheid hebben. Als God Logos is,
moet dat niet hoeven voor een gelovige
wetenschapper.
• Voor de natuurwetenschap: een completere
wereldvisie kan als wetenschappelijk “paradigma”
veel vooruitgang stimuleren. (zie Einstein, Bohr, etc)
• Voor de maatschappij: een reductionistisch
wereldbeeld dat vaak samengaat met
natuurwetenschap zorgt dat onrecht wordt gedaan
aan veel personen. Een nieuwe beschaving van
liefde heeft een rationeel fundament nodig.
11. Aantal verkenningen
• Geloof en evolutie
• Systeembiologie & natuurfilosofie
• “Personalized medicine” en de persoon
12. Wat is evolutie?
• One is that living organisms have gone through
a development from simple to complex, with
more complex forms arising out of simple ones,
in a complex non-linear branching process.
• The second is meaning is that this development
is due to the mechanism of random variation
and natural selection, as proposed by Darwin.
• The third meaning is that human beings came
forth from their animal predecessors without
any form of divine intervention.
13. De theologische kant van de zaak: Literalisme
• Genesis 1 is literally true. The earth was created in 7
days, species were created as-is.
• This is in open conflict with the fact of evolution as we
know from the fossil record & biochemical evidence.
• Why were are they so adamant?
– Because of their theological background
– Sola scriptura, sola fides.
• If scripture is not literally true, faith in Jesus Christ
suffers.
(Catholic: there are at least 4 senses to a biblical tekst)
• This faith is ‘their most precious gem’.
– Reason / science attacks it.
14. Evolutionisme
• Darwin himself studied theology and shared the literal
interpretation of Genesis. For him his evolutionary theory
meant a distancing from the Biblical faith, although he
remained agnostic.
• Atheist friends, like Huxley, saw in the theory of evolution
a rational justification for their atheism
– They made Darwin into something of a ‘atheist saint’
although Darwin himself refused to take that role.
• Their efforts led to a way of thinking called ‘evolutionism’:
evolution explains human existence completely.
– Is this science / philosophy / religion?
15. Zijn er andere oplossingen?
• Read literally, but reading like the Jews would do.
Entering into their way of thinking.
Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Marx –
Every traditionally raised Jewish
child (…) knows that the bible is not
a scientific treatise (…).
17. Biblical questions
• The bible is about God’s
covenant love
• “This Book is a long love
letter of a Father to his
beloved children that are
still on their pilgrimage in
this world.”
• Scott Hahn
18. God builds a house for his people
The earth was without form, and a(empty) – God fills her
19. Genesis teaches what and why
• God builds a proper house for his people.
• Evolution helps us understand ‘how’
20. Filosofie is belangrijk (1)
• Welke wetenschap beantwoordt welke vragen?
• Wat betekent ‘schepping’ precies?
– Thomistisch onderscheid: zijnsact - essentie
– De schepping is nu bezig!
– Analogie van computerspel.
21. Filosofie is belangrijk (2)
• Wat kunnen we precies weten?
– Aristotelisch-Thomistische traditie is heel optimistisch. We
niet-materiele.
– Vanaf Scotus, Occam, Descartes
meer wantrouwen jegens de rede.
• (Zie Regensburger Rede, Benedictus XVI – ‘dehellenisering’)
23. • Announcing the Human Genome…
• High expectations for medicine
– What area of inquiry?
• Expectations for ‘understanding who we are’
– What area of inquiry?
The Genetic Code
24. • Some successes have been reached
– Gene mutation with effects that may kick-in during
middle age to cause sudden cardiac death.
– More specific medications for certain cancers.
• Yet, many benefits for healthcare are slow to
arrive.
• Why?
Over-optimism
25. • “Getting to know the parts” –naming and
studying the behaviour of the basic building
blocks of life.
• Strong reductionism: if only we know the parts
and how they behave, we have explained life.
– Is this natural science or natural philosophy?
• Is this last conviction necessary for doing good
reductionism-inspired research?
Reductionist approach
27. • “It is about putting together rather than taking
apart, integration rather than reduction”.
– “it requires that we develop ways of thinking about
integration that are as rigorous as our reductionist
procedures, but different”
– “it means changing our philosophy, in the fullest sense of
the term.”
• Not a rejection of the results of reductionist
science, but a continuation in a new direction:
integrating the obtained results.
Systems Biology approach
28. • The terms analysis and synthesis come from (classical) Greek and mean
literally "to loosen up" and "to put together" respectively.
• In general, analysis is defined as the procedure by which we break down an
intellectual or substantial whole into parts or components.
• Synthesis is defined as the opposite procedure: to combine separate
elements or components in order to form a coherent whole.
• Analysis and synthesis, as scientific methods, always go hand in hand; they
complement one another. Every synthesis is built upon the results of a
preceding analysis, and every analysis requires a subsequent synthesis in
order to verify and correct its results.
– Tom Ritchey, 1996
Analysis and Synthesis
Conclusie :
systeembiologie & natuurfilosofie
30. “Personalized medicine”
en de persoon
• Technologische vooruitgang zorgt ervoor dat
we individueel kunnen meten
– Genen van het individu
– Maar ook allerlei andere metingen
• Dit wordt wel “personalized medicine”
genoemd
– De therapie kan meer ‘op de persoon’
worden afgestemd
32. Wiskundig model van cholesterol
om diagnostiek te verbeteren.
• Idee: gedetailleerde metingen
van cholesterol wiskundig
analyseren, door begrip betere
voorspellingen.
• Resultaat: net niet goed
genoeg.
• Besef: dit is helemaal het
probleem niet in de praktijk.
33. Wat is het probleem dan wel?
Voorbeeld: Obesitas in kinderen
thuis komen
• Wat is de oorzaak?
– Er moet gepresteerd worden? Of de hypotheek betaald?
• Wat is de oorzaak?
– Huizenmarkt, belastingstelsel, sociale druk, mensbeeld,
kernwaardes, niet nadenken… kan veel dingen zijn.
gespleten persoonlijkheid.
