Talcott Parsons Sick Role
Parsons argued that the sick role functioned to minimize the potentially deleterious effects of
individual illness upon the wellbeing of a society at large. When a person's physical body becomes
diseased, they also develop a social identity of being ill, both of which are seen as a societal
deviance. Assuming the sick role legitimates this deviance by allowing the person to be exempt
from their usual duties. Though the person is not held responsible for having become sick, they are
expected to not enjoy being sick, and are obligated to seek professional assistance and actively
become well again. Though Parsons' sick role was adequate in describing the social phenomenon of
illness in the 20th century, the sick role has since been rendered problematic in both the changing
nature of disease and the personal experience of illness. Varul proposes the sick role may disappear
completely due to the rise of chronic illness and the growing emphasis on lifestyle–centered health
promotion since then, subsequently rendering the sick role problematic (2010). The sick role can
only be properly applied to acute illnesses and does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Society no longer exists in a succinct paradigm that divides people into "healthy" groups and "sick"
groups, of which the latter may be reabsorbed into the former; it is much more diverse and includes
those who linger in between the groups, as varying degrees of "not quite sick" and "not quite well".
Thus, a new role, or several roles, must be devised in order to accommodate for this dissolution of
strict societal roles that people are undertaking, and must transition to account for personal
experiences of illness in addition to the social displacement their "sick" status places on

Comparing Chaucer's Friar And The Parson
Today, I will be comparing and contrasting Chaucer's Friar and Parson. More so, show how they
have the same kind of job yet be far different in their personalities and be perceived differently by
Chaucer. The parson, as proof will show, is a kind hearted and devout follower of his religion.
Conversely, the Friar, despite having the same type of job, has a far different demeanor. Firstly
comes the similarity of their jobs. The Friar and the Parson are both characters of similar social
stature and are both "committed" to the church, one more so than the other. "In all Four Orders there
was none so mellow" (Line 214). This quote shows that he is part of one of the four orders whom
are allowed to beg for money. "There was a Friar" (Line 212). Here Chaucer very clearly states what
his profession is. "He was a noble pillar to his Order" (Line 213). Once ... Show more content on

"Sweetly he heard his penitents at shrift with pleasant absolution, for a gift" (Line 225–226). The
Friar, a greedy swindler, will absolve people of their sins if they pay him. That shows that he is
really only doing his job for personal gain. "He was an easy man in penance–giving" (Line 227). A
truly religious Friar would give the penance one deserves, but instead he will take bribes for lesser
penances. "One should give silver for a poor Friar's care" (Line 236). Quite clearly, the Friar has
started charging people for things that should cost them nothing. Following the bible, the Parson is
quite the opposite of the Friar. "A holy–minded man of good renown" (Line 487). Chaucer describes
the Parson as a man whose mind follows only the teachings of Christ. "He much disliked extorting
tithe" (Line 496). Contrary to the Friar, the Parson has no goal of making money. "First following
the word before he taught it" (Line 507). The Parson makes sure he is following the word of God
before he teaches other people about it, something the Friar does not

Role of the School Counsellor

THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR
School counselling is a branch of applied psychology that deals with problems or behaviours that
interfere with the academic progress or social acceptance of children in the school system. School
counsellors assess cognitive functioning and identify mental retardation, giftedness, developmental
delays, instructional difficulties, and learning disabilities. They recommend educational programs;
assess behavioural and emotional problems, and support parents and teachers. They also deal with
the full spectrum of social problems including family violence, peer interactions, substance abuse,
sexual abuse, neglect and the influences of these problems on school functioning. School
counsellors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The history of school counselling around the world varies greatly based on how different countries
and local communities have chosen to provide academic, career, college readiness, and personal
skills and competencies to students from kindergarten to standard twelve and their families based on
economic and social capital resources and public versus private educational settings in what is now
called a school counselling program. In the United States of America, the profession of the school
counsellor began as a vocational guidance movement at the beginning of the twentieth century
(Schmidt, 2003). In India, school counsellors are still not prominent. Their roles in the school
setting are still not properly recognized and understood by the other educators. School counselling is
a recent development. The impetus for development of school–based counselling has a number of
causes, according to Bor. He says that everyday life can be challenging and stressful for even the
most resilient of children. Competitiveness, bullying,

social exclusion, homophobia, abuse, family crises, discrimination, sibling rivalry, scholastic
underachievement, peer pressure and substance misuse are only a few problems that children bring
to the school counsellor's office. Schools are no different from homes in the sense that they are also
considered a primary and essential context for supporting, nurturing and facilitating educational,
moral and social development in

Parson and Sociology
Parsons' most significant contribution to Sociology derives from the supposition that action does not
exist in some vacuous state. Instead he argues that action(s) should be considered within the context
of a broader system comprised of boundaries and the maintenance of such boundaries. He seems to
suggest that appropriating the action–system paradigm, to be discussed below, provides the most
useful framework for analyzing social phenomena. In The Structure of Social Action (1937),
Parsons lays the foundations for the establishment of the prevailing theoretical tradition (i.e.,
structural functionalism) in American Sociology spanning decades. Although this meta–theoretical
approach received harsh criticism from conflict theorists in particular, its attempt to bring
sophisticated and careful thinking to understanding how social scientists might examine social
systems should not be dismissed. It is neither my intent nor responsibility to rehearse the extensions
or criticisms offered by later theorists, but, rather, to focus on a few critical aspects of Parsons'
initial efforts to engage in an ongoing scholarly conversation. In doing so, I argue that although
Parson's synthesizes the work of classical theorists, he is doing so in an effort to extrapolate the
critical raw materials that might allow him to move beyond classical theoretical approaches to an
analysis of the social world rather than charting a completely new course. The degree to which I am
persuaded by

Gary Parsons Research Paper
After receiving many calls from the Audubon society, the police sent a squad car to the local park.
There stood 13–year–old Gary Parsons. With a BB gun in his arms and lifeless pigeons dangling
from his belt loop, he was guilty. The police escorted him home and banned him from the park for
shooting birds. The very next night he took revenge on the Audubon society, blowing their brand
new birdhouse to pieces with a homemade cannon. No one expected Gary to become the devoted
environmental activist that he grew up to be. Without Gary Parsons, the Choctawhatchee Bay
watershed would not be what it is today. At 72, Gary dedicates his time and energy, striving to better
the environment. A Destin Native, Gary knows these waters better than most people in the area. At
the age of 18 Gary co–captained the first offshore fishing charter boat out of Destin, The Lynwood.
His love and appreciation of the ocean and all its inhabitants is what lead him to form his non–profit

The Canterbury Tales : The Parson And The Summoner
The Medieval Period in history brought along scores of fables about everything from knights
engaging in courtly love to corruption in the Catholic Church. The Canterbury Tales written by
Geoffrey Chaucer expertly encapsulates many of the great motifs of the era. The Tales are a series of
stories and descriptions of characters of all social classes that were composed in the late 1300's.
Chaucer utilizes a multitude of literary techniques to convey his personal views of people, and
ultimately, what they represent in society. The author uses such devices when depicting two morally
contrasting characters, the Parson and the Summoner, that are documented in the Prologue. Chaucer
uses stylistic devices such as juxtaposition and analogy in rhetorical questioning when illustrating
the Parson in order to reveal the inherent good of this church official. In the beginning of the stanza,
Chaucer juxtaposes "poor" and "rich" by writing: "A holy–minded man of good renown / There was,
and poor, the Parson to a town, / Yet he was rich in holy thought and work" (Chaucer 487–489). The
Parson is by no means monetarily rich because he quite often gave "to poor parishioners round
about / Both from church offerings and his property" (Chaucer 498–499). He is undeniably a very
generous person but this led him to a life of low level materialistic wealth. It is revealed that he did
not mind having little money because "He could in little find sufficiency" (Chaucer 500). This
means that the Parson

Essay On Attending Parsons
Six years ago, I attended my first college tour during junior high school, we had an amazing tour at
Parsons: The New School. Through the visit, I discovered a new environment full of talented people
who weren't afraid to be themselves and not afraid to be judged or picked on because of their race,
gender, or sexuality. Attending Parsons: The New School will have a powerful impact on my
success in and out of college. Being an African Muslim male growing up in the U.S there are
restrictions and standards I must uphold to be considered a man. However, not living up to these
standards causes "men" like me to become outcast in society, afraid to open up restricting
themselves to live in a box.

Art Analysis: Parson Weems
The work I have selected to look closely at is Parson Weems' Fable "Grant Wood" created by Mason
Locke Weems or sometimes referred to as Parson Weems. He created this painting in 1939 to tell the
story of young George Washington and his inability to lie. The medium of this painting is oil on
canvas and is currently in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, Texas. The
painting has a width of 127.3 cm by a height of 97.5 cm. This painting has main components that
grab the attention of who is looking at it. In the painting, older George Washington is outside the

1984 Mr Parson Quotes
Mrs. Parson
Mrs. Parson is the wife of Tom Parson, who lives in the same building with Winston. She's always
busy and tired mother, with her two children who are devoted to the Party.
Syme
Syme is a friend of Winston, a philologist who works in the Research Department in the Eleventh
Edition of the Newspeak Dictionary. Winston thinks he's too intelligent to worship the Party and
will be vaporized some day. It proves to be true, he vanishes in the following months.
Ampleforth
Ampleforth is Winstons's coworker who works in the Records Department who rewrites the poems
from Oldspeak to Newspeak. By the end of the novel he ends up in Winston's cell. He committed a
crime, he left the word "God" while processing one of the Keat's poems.

take any rebellious act. The fear and propaganda is extensively spread among the citizens, Big
Brother encourages to turn in their neighbors and family members. However the conflict reaches

Mrs Parson In George Orwell
Victims of the society have historically always been women. George Orwell deeply explores this
idea by portraying the character of Mrs. Parsons, a woman in 1984, as sad, helpless and oppressed.
Orwell perfectly depicts the battle of being an intelligent woman in 1984 through persona of Mrs.
Parsons. Through her, he expresses the role of a housewife who is unconfident in her actions, with
no place for her opinion in. When Winston greets Mrs. Parsons, she is described as, "A colorless,
crushed looking woman, with wispy hair and a lined face..."(20). Mrs. Parsons is only 30 years old,
yet she looks a lot older. Her wispy hair and lined face is a clear symbol of persecution and
suppression. She has constantly been run down and degraded throughout her life. ... Show more

Her personality is reflective of the years of emotional torture she has had to go through for being a
woman. "'Oh, comrade,'she began in a dreary, whining sort of voice, "'I thought I heard you come
in. Do you think you could come across and have a look at our kitchen sink? It's got blocked up
and–"' (20). Orwell utilizes the words "dreary, whining sort of voice," to emphasize how oppressed
Mrs. Parsons is. Her state of dreariness and complaint is a result of her being aware that she is being
oppressed. Mrs. Parsons is an women with the gift of intelligence, which is lacking in the proletariat
group, and she knows her rights are being violated, but she just so happens to be a victim. While the
Parsons children play war games and target Winston with their toy gun, Mrs. Parsons makes a
remark which wavers off into mumbles. "It's the children," said Mrs. Parsons, casting a half
apprehensive glance at the door. "They haven't been out today. And of course–"(20). Notice how
Mrs. Parsons doesn't complete her sentence, because perhaps she is frightened of what might come
out of her mouth. Her life is dominated by her children, who could, at any given point, report her to

Millennials In The Canterbury Tales
In the temporally dissevered but topographically similar backwaters of Chaucer's Parson's parish
and Stephen King's Gatlin, Nebraska, you can't teach hicks reading comprehension tricks. It is
practically a reflex–response among 21st century readers to frame issues of illiteracy and
educational privation in terms of policy: the language of abandonment and desertion negated, but its
real–world manifestations not actually remedied, by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
Millennials, specifically those who were educated in a metropolis or its surrounding suburbs, might
be especially sensitive to this language, although their sensitivity is buffered by the knowledge of

Perhaps King would find my analysis bemusing. The Position Paper is unafraid to make a hash of

students ready their fertile minds for a semester's worth of Position Papers, the literature of
illiteracy, like an off–the–beaten–path mire in the topography of seductive literary topics, waits to be
noticed and taken up by an overliterate, overbright undergraduate who will tend to his or her
sentences more carefully than he or she ever will to the intellectual needs of the "left behind" in his

After reading a description of the portrait painting, such as the one written above, or simply by

College At Oneonta For My Masters
All of my experiences in life have lead me to apply to SUNY College at Oneonta for my Masters of
Science in Education. I have many goals, both professional and academic that are related to school
counseling. All throughout school I had many inspirational school counselors that molded who I am
today. This set me up for success in my college career. Upon entering college, I began to appreciate
the importance of planning and organization in order to build the life I wanted for myself. While
completing the application process for graduate school I realized that everything I had done over the
years lead to this moment. I thoroughly enjoyed applying for schools, only because I had the
confidence and motivation from my many mentors and counselors surrounding me. My friends
would ask for my assistance everyday during their own educational planning and I knew I wanted to

business with clients in the financial services industry. Parson was hired for his proven track record

4. Resilience and Assertiveness– The tough clientele in financial services domain demanded one to
be outgoing, aggressive to an extent and not someone who got bogged down easily. Parson
personified all these qualities.
5. Responsive– Parson understood well the importance of being swift in your decision making when
serving tough customers like the banks. Although this made him overlook the company norms on
decision making, Parson's alacrity did help earn business for the firm.
6. Result oriented– The faith expressed by Nasr in Parson was justified by the results that Parson
delivered. His proven track record in banking and financial services was further substantiated by his
single handed steering of the growth of MS from being rank tenth to rank second in the business.
As a person Rob Parson demonstrated the following interpersonal skills:
1. Client camaraderie– Amongst his clients Parson was known as someone fun to be around. Not
only was he popular with them for his innovative methods and services, but as a companion too they

to pass out the math tests. Sweat was dripping off my face and I could not stop fidgeting with my
fingers. Mr. Parson smiled as he came to give me my math test. I smiled at him nervously. I slowly
looked at my test score and grinned. Thankfully, I received an A on the test. (#15) Sometimes I was
a little lazy and wasn't really successful as a 6th grader. Other times, I was always working hard and
earned good grades. Because of my friends, teacher, and older sisters, I was able to find success in
6th grade. To begin with, I had good and bad friends, which was the reason why I was able to be

Parson was very supportive. According to NYU, when the teacher is supportive and is positive, then
there is a likely chance that the student will do much better in class. I did very well in class with also
the help of Mr. Parson. My teacher was always full of positivity and always told me to never give
up. Plus, I had more than one teacher when I need help. Thus, I felt like I could do anything with the
help of my teacher helped me a lot. Finally, my older sisters, Iman and Jihan have been very
important role models for me. My sisters have always worked very hard in class and have earned
perfect grades all throughout elementary, middle and high school. They are continuing to do the
same in college. It was stated in the article, "Siblings of Influence", that whatever older siblings do
is what the younger siblings also do. The younger siblings follow their older brother or sister's
footsteps. I do the exact same by trying to work hard just like Iman and Jihan. To wrap everything
up, 6th grade was very successful for me because all of the different types of people in my life.
There were good and bad people and both of those types of people have impacted me positively. I
was inspired to forget about those same people, so I could have success. To this day, I am trying to

My Experience At Tuskegee University
My experience began as early as college, when I used to volunteer with school going children in
orphanages, and would advise them on the social problems they faced in school. That is when I
decided that being a school counselor was the "perfect" job for me. Having started at an early age, I
find that my expertise does in fact lie in helping students deal with social pressure, and helping them
cope with the stress and frustration it brings. I have also been successfully able to help students
improve their self–esteem by making them focus on past successes, so that they may be able to
garner the strength for future aspirations. I don 't think age has any role to play when it comes to
warming up to students. As long as they can find a mentor, a guide and trust in someone, they are
likely to open up to them.
As I started my college career at Tuskegee University, where I double majored in psychology and
English. I was passionate about creating social awareness and helping people, but I was unsure what
career I was interested in after graduation. I thought about attending graduate school for Counseling
Psychology, but I just was not sure about it. I spoke to a professor in the Counselor Education
program at Georgia State University and discussed my interests with her. She suggested I look for a
program accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs

Comprehensive School Counseling Program Evaluation Essay
In order to provide a comprehensive school counseling program (CSCP) that meets the unique needs
of Ocean Elementary School, the school counselor must understand the needs of the school.
Therefore, conducting a needs assessment can help a new school counselor to evaluate the CSCP in
order to plan, implement, and improve the effectiveness of the program (Astramovich & Coker,
2007). Additionally, utilizing the accountability bridge counseling program evaluation model, a
continuous evaluation cycle helps to improve services based on stakeholder feedback, the needs of
those served, and outcomes (Astramovich & Coker, 2007). Within this model, a needs assessment
must be conducted in order to plan and develop services that address the needs of the students
(Astramovich & Coker, 2007). Thus, by utilizing assessment questionnaires, the school counselor
can gather information from the diverse population of students, parents, teachers, and administrator
to determine how the CSCP can best support all students' needs (American School Counselor
Association [ASCA], 2012). Additionally, the use of other data, such as observations, standardized
test scores, absentee rates, and student referrals can support the feedback received on the
questionnaires. Based on the data, the school counselor can evaluate the school counseling program
in order to improve the program in the domain areas of academic, social/emotional, and career
development. Thus, within the accountability bridge counseling

Analysis Of Nancy Parsons In Turkish Dress Portrait
Oftentimes, portraits are mistakenly believed to be objective representations of their subjects by the
uninformed viewer. Thus, portraits are thought to simply depict the exact likeness of their sitters. In
reality, however, they reveal much more than just the physical appearance of their figures. Portraits
can, and usually do, convey a significant amount of information about their subjects, such as their
wealth, social status, marital status, and moral virtue. Through the use of visual features like
garments, props, and pose, portraits also tend to ascribe these attributes to their sitters, whether or
not such characteristics are accurate. George Willison's Nancy Parsons in Turkish Dress (1771)
painting provides an excellent example that portraits are not merely records of how their sitters
looked. With a thorough analysis of the portrait, multiple implied messages about Ms. Parsons are
exposed. The Nancy Parsons in Turkish Dress portrait illustrates her profession as a courtesan,
wealth and social status, and conformity to the contemporary conventions of femininity. Notorious
for engaging in many intimate relationships with aristocratic men of all ranks and ages, such as
Duke of Grafton, Duke of Dorset, and Viscount Maynard, Nancy Parsons wishes to emphasize these
aspects of her identity in the painting to preserve her public self–image from further scandalous
claims. In Nancy Parsons in Turkish Dress, the artist portrays his female model in a domestic
interior. She

Who Is The Parson In The Canterbury Tales
The Parson of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the author reveals the true
motives of the Parson, a man overcome with godly love. Though Chaucer usually makes even the
most evil of souls seem decent, he makes certain there is no other way to describe this person except
as lawful and honest. The Parson sets a good Christian example in his character as a whole. Initially,
Chaucer describes the Parson as a "holy–minded man of good renown" (487), a statement that may
bring to mind other characters who seem good, but are truly evil at their core. Though this may
seem a likely case in the first few lines of the Parson's introduction, instead he is found to be a man
who lacks money, but makes up for it in his godliness (489). He is lowly of service and instead of
moving to London to make an easier living (517), the Parson prefers to remain in his village and
watch "over his fold" (520) because he views the townspeople as his sheep and himself as the
shepherd. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He knows his duty is to his town and parish and wants nothing more than to serve them. Chaucer
mentions that the Parson makes calls to the townspeople even "in rain or thunder, /In sickness or
grief" (502–503), something that doesn't seem to be at all unusual for him to do. In fact, he so
believed in helping others and being of service to them that he gave from "both church offerings and
his property" (499), something that may seem so rare in a time when the Church is so

A Brief Note On Professional Counseling And Its Unique...
"Society lives in the present. Society also plans for and worries about the future. History, however,
is not as easily seen in society's daily activities. It is simply the study of the past" (American
Historical Association, 2004). It seems that history is believed to be less important when compared
to the other two tenses. History, however, is composed of individuals and happenings that have
helped mold the present time period. In other words, there would not be a present or future without a
history. Everything has a past, including the profession of counseling. Professional counseling, and
its unique disciplines, has a past that is over a century old. As a result, it has developed into a
distinguishably important profession.
According to the American Counseling Association (2013), professional counseling is a professional
relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health,
wellness, education, and career goals. In this present time, counseling is a well–defined term. It is
the act of "working with clients on strategies to overcome obstacles and personal challenges that the
clients are facing" (American Counseling Association, 2013). Unfortunately, this has not always
been the case. Counseling has not always been viewed as a true profession. Nor has it always been
clearly defined.
As one explores the history of professional counseling, one will see that its journey begun in the late
1890s. Beginning about a hundred and twenty

The Death of the ‘Authorlessness Theory’? Essay
The Death of the 'Authorlessness Theory'?
Let's face it. Can one fully buy into Roland Barthes' claim that "The birth of the reader must be at
the cost of the death of the Author"? (172). Even if "it is language which speaks, not the author"
(168), an author is responsible for the creation of a unique sequence of words in a novel, a poem or
an article. The canvas on which freeplaying signifiers paint themselves seems so vast to Barthes that
"the writer can only imitate a gesture that is always anterior, never original" (170). His claim, when
taken at face value, is equivalent to saying that since paint exists, there can be no Painter. But it
would be a faux pas give his idea such a naïve reading–a reading strictly ... Show more content on

Both of our questions are answered. Art can be authored, and, so it follows, the originator of the idea
should receive credit. Authority, in this context, then becomes the power to influence thought.
Michel Foucault's notion of an author–function supplements color to these black and white
dictionary definitions. He defines the author–function as a "characteristic of the mode of existence,
circulation, and functioning of certain discourses within a society" where ownership and the
importance of the individual are stressed (202). Now that the author has been defined, can it be
shocking to learn that "some four hundred women and men from all walks of life" contributed to
The Dinner Party, but it was credited to Judy Chicago (Jones, 68)? The Dinner Party, first exhibited
in San Francisco in 1979, was a massive multimedia display composed of tables (that together
formed a triangle) on which 39 decorated plates (most of which contained intricately caricatured
vaginal and butterfly imagery) were placed. Underneath each plate were needlepoint runners. Inside
the area outlined by the tables were porcelain tiles on which the names of 999 women were hand
painted. The project attempted to revise "the history of Western culture by naming and symbolizing
in visual form 1,038 women from various historical periods" (Jones, 87). As with Chicago's earlier
collaborative project Womanhouse (1972), an emphasis on handiwork was stressed. All of the

Parson 's Performance Evaluation : Parson
Based on the information supplied in Rob Parson's performance evaluation, Parson is a hardworking
asset to the Morgan Stanley team and is an asset to the Investment Banking Division in the sense
that he is able to achieve results; with that being said, when it comes to the interpersonal
communication aspect that is crucial in any setting requiring even the slightest element of
teamwork, Parson is failing to reach the expectations of his colleagues and superiors. While being
able to conduct sales and persuade clients in an unprecedented manner differentiates Parson from
his colleagues, the respect, admiration, and the management skills that could truly allow him to
excel at Morgan Stanley are lacking. With this information in mind, Parson should not be promoted
at this point. The Managing Director position specifically lists that the individuals with such a title
clearly display leadership and lead by example. In Parson's performance ratings, his lowest ratings
were in areas of coaching, management, ability to work in a team, and adherence to policies.
Although Parson received high ratings in other aspects pertaining to the Managing Director position,
such as knowledge, he lacks the full set of qualities that would set him up for success as a Managing
Director. Parson should be offered the opportunity to stay with the firm as a "permanent principal",

Abstract
This paper explores the main characteristics of the school counseling career. To understand school
counseling its history must be visited when it began in the 1800's. This paper goes through the steps
of licensure, education requirements, and typical therapy techniques adopted by today's school
counselors. To fully understand how to be the best at one's career it is important to collaborate with
other's in one's career field by joining professional associations. It is noted in this paper what those
associations are and the benefits of each of those associations.

As you can probably understand these teachers were overloaded with their regular duties and did not
have time to receive extra training to focus on vocational/counseling related trainings. It wasn't until
the 1900's that the teacher–counselor positions were replaced with full–time school counselors or
what was known as "guidance counselors" (Schimmel, 2008). "An alliance among education, social
work, and psychometrics in vocational guidance led to the organization of the National Vocational
Guidance Association (NVGA) in 1913" (Lambie & Williamson, 2004). By creating this
association, it gave a voice to guidance counselors and created a network of support and strength to
the career as a whole. "In the 1940's, the "Father of Counseling," Carl Rogers, published his
book...Following the inception of Rogers' work, the term guidance began to be replaced in the
literature by counseling..." (Lambie & Williamson, 2004). Hence, the term guidance counselor is
still used today, the new generation of school counselors do not prefer to be titled as so. According
to Paisley and Borders (1995), federal legislation has been particularly significant in the creation
and definition of counseling positions in public schools. "The National Defense Education Act in
1965 provided particular opportunities for training school counselors and implementing specialized
programs" (Paisely & Borders, 1995). Around this same timeframe many associations were forming

In the book the Parsons family is introduced to the readers when Winston goes over to Mrs.
Parsons's apartment to fix her pipes under the sink. There he met her children, her son of nine years
old and daughter of seven years old. But like most children they were a part of the Spies who report
back to the authorities when activities that don't align with Big Brother's mission occur whether it be
their parents or someone else. You can see how much power the children have by the statement the
boy makes to Winston, "You're a thoughtcriminal! You're a Eurasian spy!... I'll send you to the salt
mines!" (Pg. 25). With just a word to the authorities Winston will be sent to his death or be worked

How Washington 's Role And Legacy Has Been Manipulated By...
Kush Patel
Word Count: Edward G. Lengel, author of Inventing George Washington, brings a different
approach to writing historical books. He has collected and sifted through virtually all mediums of
Washington's life. Through his work I found a central theme of how Washington's role and legacy
has been manipulated by society. Lengel displays the way writers, critics, and religious leaders
changed George Washington's identity for their own personal benefits; they have altered his
religious orientation and his public image in both good and bad ways.
George Washington's religious beliefs have always been altered or unclear to the American society.
Lengel ponders, "Washington considered attendance at religious services to be a civic duty. He
believed that morality and the unfettered practice of religion ensured the prosperity of a well–
organized society" (77). Washington was only partially religious to please the common people. He
was selfless in doing what was in the best interest of his nation than himself. By taking the role of
president, he had to sacrifice his own beliefs. The Valley Forge prayer incident was commonly
disfigured by many. The story began when a Quaker, by the name of Isaac Potts, saw Washington in
prayer, according to Mason Locke Weems. After the initial story, others began twisting it to their
liking by adding horses or barns. As Lengel states, "The image of Washington in prayer became
iconic" (86). Artist painted Washington in various scenes depicting

Labor Unions in the Late 1800's
Labor unions in the late 1800's set out to improve the lives of frequently abused workers. Volatile
issues like the eight–hour workday, ridiculously low pay and unfair company town practices were
often the fuses that lit explosive conflicts between unions and monopolistic industrialists. Some of
the most violent and important conflicts of the time were the Haymarket Affair and the Pullman
strike. Each set out to with similar goals and both ended with horrifying consequences. The
movement for the eight–hour workday was one of the most violent struggles for laborers. Their
struggle is defined by protests that were broken up by the police and the Pinkertons. The Pinkertons

Many homes, meeting halls, and offices where outspoken supporters of the eight–hour movement
lived and worked were raided without warrant. Oscar Neebe, Adolph Fisher, August Spies, Louis
Lingg, Michael Schwab, Samuel Fielden, Carl Engel, and Albert Parsons were charged with the
trumped up charge of accessory to murder for the riot. They were all brought to trial, even though
many of the men were not even at Haymarket Square at the time of the melee.
With a jury of twelve men found all of the defendants guilty. After an appeal to the Supreme Court,
Spies, Parsons, Fischer and Engel were sentenced to hang. Neebe, Fielden and Schwab were given
life sentences. Louis Lingg most likely would have served a life sentence as well, however, he
committed suicide.

Comparison Of The Parson And The Canterbury Tales
In Chaucer's famous novel: The Canterbury Tales, he describes many characters in a satirical way,
while others he describes with complete admiration. The narrator (a constructed version of Chaucer
himself) is staying at the Tabard Inn in London, when a large group of about twenty–nine people
enter the inn, preparing to go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. After the narrator talks to them, he
agrees to join them on their pilgrimage. Although, before the narrator progresses any further in the
tale, he describes the circumstances and the social rank of each pilgrim. There are two characters in
these tales of the same social class, but Chaucer's opinion on them vary greatly. These two
characters are the beloved Parson, and the loathed Pardoner. ... Show more content on

From this description alone, one can tell that the Parson truly views himself as the caretaker of
believing souls. He takes his responsibility extremely seriously. Associating the Parson with
characters like the Friar, Monk, Prioress, Pardoner, and Summoner makes those characters appear
even more covered with sin and selfishness. The Parson's presence on the pilgrimage is needed.
Without him, there would be no idea of what a religious figure should be, while, with him, we have
a nearly Christ–like view of comparison. "Who truly know Christ's gospel and would preach it
devoutly to parishioners, and teach it. Benign and wonderfully diligent, and patient when adversity
was sent." (Chaucer, 491–494). As for Chaucer's views of society, Chaucer clearly does not have an
issue with the church class itself. Rather, he knows there are some corrupt souls and people who do
not deserve to be a part of the church. The Parson is the ideal person that belongs in this class, and it
is obvious that Chaucer understands religion, and has nothing against it. He only frowns upon the
deceitful church members, who are only a part of the church for selfish gain. The Pardoner is
another church class member that is described by Chaucer. Except, Chaucer has some strong
feelings about this particular man. The pardoner sells pardons for sins, and also travels with the
summoner while simultaneously singing a duet with him. This man seemed to be normal, until
Chaucer describes this man as

The Importance Of Guidance Counsellors
Counselling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families and groups to
accomplish mental health, wellness, education and career goals (Spurgeon, 2012). Schools have
been identified as one of the main settings for the promotion of well–being and mental health in
children and young people (Department for Education and Employment, 2001; DCSF, 2008b, as
cited in Harris, 2009). Counselling in an educational context establishes career and college planning,
interpersonal concerns, family matters, substance use, and personal identity issues, dominating
student's awareness, with the counselling climate providing an appropriate environment to address
these issues (Cormier & Hackney, 2012). Due to the increasing needs of counselling within schools,
School Guidance Counsellors are a critical commodity for young people in today's society.
For new Guidance Counsellors, there is a broad range of concepts that need to be established and
developed. One key concept is counsellor identity. There are many facets that can inform a
counsellor's professional identity and these factors are paramount in the continuance of development
and advancement in the helping profession. Different factors such as the value held by the
individual within the profession, historical factors influencing the profession, theoretical orientation,
differentiating features separating the profession from other health professions, focus of research
efforts and scope of professional activities

Accordingly, investigative, social, and conventional traits are the attributes in the counseling
profession. As stated above, school counseling profession complements my personal and
environmental characteristics. Investigative traits consist of problem solving and preciseness. A
counselor is faced with complex issues when working with children or teenagers. Often, counselors
search for solution to assist a student academically or socially. If a student is suffering academically,
a counselor will research the reasoning behind the matter. For myself, I work with adults and
teenagers who are on the spectrum. Therefore, complex issue arises daily. As a result, I take the
initiative to search solutions and compare the results with my colleagues. Secondly, the
requirements of assisting individuals on the spectrum is integrated into the community. It involves,
working, helping, and teaching him/her to interact appropriately out in the public. For example,
people on the spectrum often live with anxiety. Thus, when traveling to new surroundings, a staff
member might encounter an episode of anxiety. So, I learned several techniques to redirect the

Talcott Parsons Sick Role

  • 1. Talcott Parsons Sick Role Parsons argued that the sick role functioned to minimize the potentially deleterious effects of individual illness upon the wellbeing of a society at large. When a person's physical body becomes diseased, they also develop a social identity of being ill, both of which are seen as a societal deviance. Assuming the sick role legitimates this deviance by allowing the person to be exempt from their usual duties. Though the person is not held responsible for having become sick, they are expected to not enjoy being sick, and are obligated to seek professional assistance and actively become well again. Though Parsons' sick role was adequate in describing the social phenomenon of illness in the 20th century, the sick role has since been rendered problematic in both the changing nature of disease and the personal experience of illness. Varul proposes the sick role may disappear completely due to the rise of chronic illness and the growing emphasis on lifestyle–centered health promotion since then, subsequently rendering the sick role problematic (2010). The sick role can only be properly applied to acute illnesses and does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Society no longer exists in a succinct paradigm that divides people into "healthy" groups and "sick" groups, of which the latter may be reabsorbed into the former; it is much more diverse and includes those who linger in between the groups, as varying degrees of "not quite sick" and "not quite well". Thus, a new role, or several roles, must be devised in order to accommodate for this dissolution of strict societal roles that people are undertaking, and must transition to account for personal experiences of illness in addition to the social displacement their "sick" status places on ... I want you to know that this is a safe environment that you can tell me whatever is on your mind and I will not share it with anyone unless it is one of the things that I mentioned, okay?" • 3. Comparing Chaucer's Friar And The Parson Today, I will be comparing and contrasting Chaucer's Friar and Parson. More so, show how they have the same kind of job yet be far different in their personalities and be perceived differently by Chaucer. The parson, as proof will show, is a kind hearted and devout follower of his religion. Conversely, the Friar, despite having the same type of job, has a far different demeanor. Firstly comes the similarity of their jobs. The Friar and the Parson are both characters of similar social stature and are both "committed" to the church, one more so than the other. "In all Four Orders there was none so mellow" (Line 214). This quote shows that he is part of one of the four orders whom are allowed to beg for money. "There was a Friar" (Line 212). Here Chaucer very clearly states what his profession is. "He was a noble pillar to his Order" (Line 213). Once ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Sweetly he heard his penitents at shrift with pleasant absolution, for a gift" (Line 225–226). The Friar, a greedy swindler, will absolve people of their sins if they pay him. That shows that he is really only doing his job for personal gain. "He was an easy man in penance–giving" (Line 227). A truly religious Friar would give the penance one deserves, but instead he will take bribes for lesser penances. "One should give silver for a poor Friar's care" (Line 236). Quite clearly, the Friar has started charging people for things that should cost them nothing. Following the bible, the Parson is quite the opposite of the Friar. "A holy–minded man of good renown" (Line 487). Chaucer describes the Parson as a man whose mind follows only the teachings of Christ. "He much disliked extorting tithe" (Line 496). Contrary to the Friar, the Parson has no goal of making money. "First following the word before he taught it" (Line 507). The Parson makes sure he is following the word of God before he teaches other people about it, something the Friar does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Role of the School Counsellor Divya Srivastava THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR School counselling is a branch of applied psychology that deals with problems or behaviours that interfere with the academic progress or social acceptance of children in the school system. School counsellors assess cognitive functioning and identify mental retardation, giftedness, developmental delays, instructional difficulties, and learning disabilities. They recommend educational programs; assess behavioural and emotional problems, and support parents and teachers. They also deal with the full spectrum of social problems including family violence, peer interactions, substance abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and the influences of these problems on school functioning. School counsellors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The history of school counselling around the world varies greatly based on how different countries and local communities have chosen to provide academic, career, college readiness, and personal skills and competencies to students from kindergarten to standard twelve and their families based on economic and social capital resources and public versus private educational settings in what is now called a school counselling program. In the United States of America, the profession of the school counsellor began as a vocational guidance movement at the beginning of the twentieth century (Schmidt, 2003). In India, school counsellors are still not prominent. Their roles in the school setting are still not properly recognized and understood by the other educators. School counselling is a recent development. The impetus for development of school–based counselling has a number of causes, according to Bor. He says that everyday life can be challenging and stressful for even the most resilient of children. Competitiveness, bullying, 2 social exclusion, homophobia, abuse, family crises, discrimination, sibling rivalry, scholastic underachievement, peer pressure and substance misuse are only a few problems that children bring to the school counsellor's office. Schools are no different from homes in the sense that they are also considered a primary and essential context for supporting, nurturing and facilitating educational, moral and social development in ... • 5. Parson and Sociology Parsons' most significant contribution to Sociology derives from the supposition that action does not exist in some vacuous state. Instead he argues that action(s) should be considered within the context of a broader system comprised of boundaries and the maintenance of such boundaries. He seems to suggest that appropriating the action–system paradigm, to be discussed below, provides the most useful framework for analyzing social phenomena. In The Structure of Social Action (1937), Parsons lays the foundations for the establishment of the prevailing theoretical tradition (i.e., structural functionalism) in American Sociology spanning decades. Although this meta–theoretical approach received harsh criticism from conflict theorists in particular, its attempt to bring sophisticated and careful thinking to understanding how social scientists might examine social systems should not be dismissed. It is neither my intent nor responsibility to rehearse the extensions or criticisms offered by later theorists, but, rather, to focus on a few critical aspects of Parsons' initial efforts to engage in an ongoing scholarly conversation. In doing so, I argue that although Parson's synthesizes the work of classical theorists, he is doing so in an effort to extrapolate the critical raw materials that might allow him to move beyond classical theoretical approaches to an analysis of the social world rather than charting a completely new course. The degree to which I am persuaded by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Gary Parsons Research Paper After receiving many calls from the Audubon society, the police sent a squad car to the local park. There stood 13–year–old Gary Parsons. With a BB gun in his arms and lifeless pigeons dangling from his belt loop, he was guilty. The police escorted him home and banned him from the park for shooting birds. The very next night he took revenge on the Audubon society, blowing their brand new birdhouse to pieces with a homemade cannon. No one expected Gary to become the devoted environmental activist that he grew up to be. Without Gary Parsons, the Choctawhatchee Bay watershed would not be what it is today. At 72, Gary dedicates his time and energy, striving to better the environment. A Destin Native, Gary knows these waters better than most people in the area. At the age of 18 Gary co–captained the first offshore fishing charter boat out of Destin, The Lynwood. His love and appreciation of the ocean and all its inhabitants is what lead him to form his non–profit Artificial Reef Organization, which is known today as the Emerald Coast Reef Association. • 7. The Canterbury Tales : The Parson And The Summoner The Medieval Period in history brought along scores of fables about everything from knights engaging in courtly love to corruption in the Catholic Church. The Canterbury Tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer expertly encapsulates many of the great motifs of the era. The Tales are a series of stories and descriptions of characters of all social classes that were composed in the late 1300's. Chaucer utilizes a multitude of literary techniques to convey his personal views of people, and ultimately, what they represent in society. The author uses such devices when depicting two morally contrasting characters, the Parson and the Summoner, that are documented in the Prologue. Chaucer uses stylistic devices such as juxtaposition and analogy in rhetorical questioning when illustrating the Parson in order to reveal the inherent good of this church official. In the beginning of the stanza, Chaucer juxtaposes "poor" and "rich" by writing: "A holy–minded man of good renown / There was, and poor, the Parson to a town, / Yet he was rich in holy thought and work" (Chaucer 487–489). The Parson is by no means monetarily rich because he quite often gave "to poor parishioners round about / Both from church offerings and his property" (Chaucer 498–499). He is undeniably a very generous person but this led him to a life of low level materialistic wealth. It is revealed that he did not mind having little money because "He could in little find sufficiency" (Chaucer 500). This means that the Parson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through the visit, I discovered a new environment full of talented people who weren't afraid to be themselves and not afraid to be judged or picked on because of their race, gender, or sexuality. Attending Parsons: The New School will have a powerful impact on my success in and out of college. Being an African Muslim male growing up in the U.S there are restrictions and standards I must uphold to be considered a man. However, not living up to these standards causes "men" like me to become outcast in society, afraid to open up restricting themselves to live in a box. He created this painting in 1939 to tell the story of young George Washington and his inability to lie. The medium of this painting is oil on canvas and is currently in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, Texas. The painting has a width of 127.3 cm by a height of 97.5 cm. • 11. Mrs Parson In George Orwell Victims of the society have historically always been women. George Orwell deeply explores this idea by portraying the character of Mrs. Parsons, a woman in 1984, as sad, helpless and oppressed. Orwell perfectly depicts the battle of being an intelligent woman in 1984 through persona of Mrs. Parsons. Through her, he expresses the role of a housewife who is unconfident in her actions, with no place for her opinion in. When Winston greets Mrs. Parsons, she is described as, "A colorless, crushed looking woman, with wispy hair and a lined face..."(20). Mrs. Parsons is only 30 years old, yet she looks a lot older. Comprehensive School Counseling Program Evaluation Essay In order to provide a comprehensive school counseling program (CSCP) that meets the unique needs of Ocean Elementary School, the school counselor must understand the needs of the school. Therefore, conducting a needs assessment can help a new school counselor to evaluate the CSCP in order to plan, implement, and improve the effectiveness of the program (Astramovich & Coker, 2007). Additionally, utilizing the accountability bridge counseling program evaluation model, a continuous evaluation cycle helps to improve services based on stakeholder feedback, the needs of those served, and outcomes (Astramovich & Coker, 2007). Within this model, a needs assessment must be conducted in order to plan and develop services that address the needs of the students (Astramovich & Coker, 2007). Thus, by utilizing assessment questionnaires, the school counselor can gather information from the diverse population of students, parents, teachers, and administrator to determine how the CSCP can best support all students' needs (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2012). Additionally, the use of other data, such as observations, standardized test scores, absentee rates, and student referrals can support the feedback received on the questionnaires. • 26. Analysis Of Nancy Parsons In Turkish Dress Portrait Oftentimes, portraits are mistakenly believed to be objective representations of their subjects by the uninformed viewer. Thus, portraits are thought to simply depict the exact likeness of their sitters. In reality, however, they reveal much more than just the physical appearance of their figures. Portraits can, and usually do, convey a significant amount of information about their subjects, such as their wealth, social status, marital status, and moral virtue. Through the use of visual features like garments, props, and pose, portraits also tend to ascribe these attributes to their sitters, whether or not such characteristics are accurate. George Willison's Nancy Parsons in Turkish Dress (1771) painting provides an excellent example that portraits are not merely records of how their sitters looked. With a thorough analysis of the portrait, multiple implied messages about Ms. Parsons are exposed. The Nancy Parsons in Turkish Dress portrait illustrates her profession as a courtesan, wealth and social status, and conformity to the contemporary conventions of femininity. Notorious for engaging in many intimate relationships with aristocratic men of all ranks and ages, such as Duke of Grafton, Duke of Dorset, and Viscount Maynard, Nancy Parsons wishes to emphasize these aspects of her identity in the painting to preserve her public self–image from further scandalous claims. • 27. Who Is The Parson In The Canterbury Tales The Parson of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the author reveals the true motives of the Parson, a man overcome with godly love. Though Chaucer usually makes even the most evil of souls seem decent, he makes certain there is no other way to describe this person except as lawful and honest. The Parson sets a good Christian example in his character as a whole. Initially, Chaucer describes the Parson as a "holy–minded man of good renown" (487), a statement that may bring to mind other characters who seem good, but are truly evil at their core. Though this may seem a likely case in the first few lines of the Parson's introduction, instead he is found to be a man who lacks money, but makes up for it in his godliness (489). History, however, is not as easily seen in society's daily activities. It is simply the study of the past" (American Historical Association, 2004). It seems that history is believed to be less important when compared to the other two tenses. History, however, is composed of individuals and happenings that have helped mold the present time period. In other words, there would not be a present or future without a history. Everything has a past, including the profession of counseling. Professional counseling, and its unique disciplines, has a past that is over a century old. According to the American Counseling Association (2013), professional counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals. In this present time, counseling is a well–defined term. It is the act of "working with clients on strategies to overcome obstacles and personal challenges that the clients are facing" (American Counseling Association, 2013). Can one fully buy into Roland Barthes' claim that "The birth of the reader must be at the cost of the death of the Author"? (172). Even if "it is language which speaks, not the author" (168), an author is responsible for the creation of a unique sequence of words in a novel, a poem or an article. The canvas on which freeplaying signifiers paint themselves seems so vast to Barthes that "the writer can only imitate a gesture that is always anterior, never original" (170). Authority, in this context, then becomes the power to influence thought. Michel Foucault's notion of an author–function supplements color to these black and white dictionary definitions. He defines the author–function as a "characteristic of the mode of existence, circulation, and functioning of certain discourses within a society" where ownership and the importance of the individual are stressed (202). Now that the author has been defined, can it be shocking to learn that "some four hundred women and men from all walks of life" contributed to The Dinner Party, but it was credited to Judy Chicago (Jones, 68)? The Dinner Party, first exhibited in San Francisco in 1979, was a massive multimedia display composed of tables (that together formed a triangle) on which 39 decorated plates (most of which contained intricately caricatured vaginal and butterfly imagery) were placed. Underneath each plate were needlepoint runners. Inside the area outlined by the tables were porcelain tiles on which the names of 999 women were hand painted. The project attempted to revise "the history of Western culture by naming and symbolizing in visual form 1,038 women from various historical periods" (Jones, 87). It wasn't until the 1900's that the teacher–counselor positions were replaced with full–time school counselors or what was known as "guidance counselors" (Schimmel, 2008). "An alliance among education, social work, and psychometrics in vocational guidance led to the organization of the National Vocational Guidance Association (NVGA) in 1913" (Lambie & Williamson, 2004). By creating this association, it gave a voice to guidance counselors and created a network of support and strength to the career as a whole. Lengel, author of Inventing George Washington, brings a different approach to writing historical books. He has collected and sifted through virtually all mediums of Washington's life. Through his work I found a central theme of how Washington's role and legacy has been manipulated by society. Lengel displays the way writers, critics, and religious leaders changed George Washington's identity for their own personal benefits; they have altered his religious orientation and his public image in both good and bad ways. George Washington's religious beliefs have always been altered or unclear to the American society. Lengel ponders, "Washington considered attendance at religious services to be a civic duty. He believed that morality and the unfettered practice of religion ensured the prosperity of a well– organized society" (77). Washington was only partially religious to please the common people. He was selfless in doing what was in the best interest of his nation than himself. By taking the role of president, he had to sacrifice his own beliefs. The Valley Forge prayer incident was commonly disfigured by many. The story began when a Quaker, by the name of Isaac Potts, saw Washington in prayer, according to Mason Locke Weems. After the initial story, others began twisting it to their liking by adding horses or barns. As Lengel states, "The image of Washington in prayer became iconic" (86). Artist painted Washington in various scenes depicting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Labor Unions in the Late 1800's Essay Labor Unions in the Late 1800's Labor unions in the late 1800's set out to improve the lives of frequently abused workers. Volatile issues like the eight–hour workday, ridiculously low pay and unfair company town practices were often the fuses that lit explosive conflicts between unions and monopolistic industrialists. Some of the most violent and important conflicts of the time were the Haymarket Affair and the Pullman strike. Each set out to with similar goals and both ended with horrifying consequences. The movement for the eight–hour workday was one of the most violent struggles for laborers. Their struggle is defined by protests that were broken up by the police and the Pinkertons. Many homes, meeting halls, and offices where outspoken supporters of the eight–hour movement lived and worked were raided without warrant. Oscar Neebe, Adolph Fisher, August Spies, Louis Lingg, Michael Schwab, Samuel Fielden, Carl Engel, and Albert Parsons were charged with the trumped up charge of accessory to murder for the riot. They were all brought to trial, even though many of the men were not even at Haymarket Square at the time of the melee. With a jury of twelve men found all of the defendants guilty. After an appeal to the Supreme Court, Spies, Parsons, Fischer and Engel were sentenced to hang. Neebe, Fielden and Schwab were given life sentences. Louis Lingg most likely would have served a life sentence as well, however, he committed suicide. "[Pullman] is, in fact, philanthropy made practical; humanity, founded on business principles; sobriety, art music, clean living, refined homes, self–respecting independence of character without paternalism; a vindication of the theory that there is an economical value in beauty, and that the workingman is capable of appreciating and wisely using the highest ministries of art and beauty." ––Chicago Times, 10 January 1891 The Pullman Strike of 1894 was the first national strike in United States history. • 36. Comparison Of The Parson And The Canterbury Tales In Chaucer's famous novel: The Canterbury Tales, he describes many characters in a satirical way, while others he describes with complete admiration. The narrator (a constructed version of Chaucer himself) is staying at the Tabard Inn in London, when a large group of about twenty–nine people enter the inn, preparing to go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. After the narrator talks to them, he agrees to join them on their pilgrimage. Although, before the narrator progresses any further in the tale, he describes the circumstances and the social rank of each pilgrim. There are two characters in these tales of the same social class, but Chaucer's opinion on them vary greatly. These two characters are the beloved Parson, and the loathed Pardoner. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From this description alone, one can tell that the Parson truly views himself as the caretaker of believing souls. He takes his responsibility extremely seriously. Associating the Parson with characters like the Friar, Monk, Prioress, Pardoner, and Summoner makes those characters appear even more covered with sin and selfishness. The Parson's presence on the pilgrimage is needed. Without him, there would be no idea of what a religious figure should be, while, with him, we have a nearly Christ–like view of comparison. "Who truly know Christ's gospel and would preach it devoutly to parishioners, and teach it. Benign and wonderfully diligent, and patient when adversity was sent." (Chaucer, 491–494). As for Chaucer's views of society, Chaucer clearly does not have an issue with the church class itself. Rather, he knows there are some corrupt souls and people who do not deserve to be a part of the church. The Parson is the ideal person that belongs in this class, and it is obvious that Chaucer understands religion, and has nothing against it. He only frowns upon the deceitful church members, who are only a part of the church for selfish gain. The Pardoner is another church class member that is described by Chaucer. Except, Chaucer has some strong feelings about this particular man. The pardoner sells pardons for sins, and also travels with the summoner while simultaneously singing a duet with him. This man seemed to be normal, until Chaucer describes this man as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Parsons Application Essay Sample Parsons has an outstanding reputation, ideal location and came highly recommended by many other artistic students at my school who plan on applying. However, what really made me feel that I belong at Parsons was the artistically diverse community it has attracted, and the values it preaches. Ever since my first family day trip to New York at the age of eight, I have been taken with this city that is teeming with diversity and art. It was my first time really seeing all walks of life, the good the bad and the ugly, unfiltered. Since then I went back every year for my birthday and began telling my mother and my best friend that I was going to live there one day. I belonged there. I find the inclusion of all creative types at Parsons very personally reassuring. I feel that should I at some point decide that drawing is not the most fulfilling medium, I trust that I can find another medium to thrive in at this school. I am proud to say that I share many of Parson's values. I too think that working towards a more sustainable earth is one of the most important things one can do in their life. Also, as a queer female I find the accepting environment at Parsons to be very important. As someone who has volunteered cooking and serving dinner at my local homeless shelters, it makes me happy to see that parsons students are using their education to help the many less fortunate people in New York with projects such as the GoodFill bag.
