Symbolism In A Thousand Splendid Suns
In the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini uses the colors of blue and white to
represent change in Laila's life. An example of when they appear is on the day a bomb hit Laila's
house and kills her family. On that day, "Mammy was wearing the same cobalt blue dress she had
worn the day of the lunch party four months earlier" (192 Hosseini). It is moments after Laila
notices her mother's dress that the young girl's life dramatically changes; her family is now blown to
oblivion by a stray rocket that leaves her fading in and out of consciousness in the desolate remains
of her house. Khaled Hosseini uses the colors blue and white here to not only symbolize oncoming
change, but to also give the reader a greater insight into the events to come. The white of the dress ...

By Hosseini having Mammy wear this dress on the day of her death, he is thus securing the demise
of Mammy and Babi in order to bring change into Laila's life. Another instance in which colors of
blue and white appeared is after Mariam killed Rasheed with a shovel. It was the day of Laila's
departure with Tariq to Pakistan that Mariam wore "a dark blue sweater buttoned in the front [with]
white cotton trousers" (360). The change Laila faces here is the loss of a dear friend to the harsh
punishments of Sharia Law. Mariam had affected Laila's life in so many ways, she made the solitary
confinement in Rasheed's house bearable, she became the mother figure that Laila had never
experienced, and most of all, Mariam saved Laila's life by killing Rasheed. Mariam killing Rasheed
ultimately lead to her execution , which left Laila once again motherless. The author uses the color
blue here to symbolize the night sky above Kabul and the color white to symbolize the thousand
splendid suns that dot it. He has Mariam wear them because she, within herself, is like the thousand
splendid suns that hang over the

Does Nathaniel Hawthrone Use Light Imagery In Rappaccini's...
Although advancements in science are constantly upgrading the standards of living, the treacherous
backlashes associated with such improvements are seldom recognized. In Nathaniel Hawthrone's
"Rappaccini's Daughter", a young man finds himself intertwined in a dilemma concerning the work
of a psychotic scientist along with his captivating daughter. The use of light and dark imagery within
the story, ranging from purple gem–like flowers to the sickly scientist, imparts Hawthrone's belief
that scientific discovery possesses productive and destructive powers.
The use of light imagery emphasizes the productive nature of scientific progress. By the shattered
marble fountain, a magnificent shrub adorned with flowers appearing as purple gems glistened ...

Fluids from one of the artificial blossoms dripped onto a colored reptile's head, causing it to contort
violently and pass away agonizingly. This imparts how science is able to devise potent materials
capable of stripping organisms of their lives. A delicate winged insect was attracted by the heavy
perfumes of the artificial flowers and was killed, suggesting that detrimental scientific discoveries
can destroy innocence by luring unsuspecting individuals into its pitfall and annihilate them. The
psychotic scientist, Giacomo Rappaccini, is described as a sickly, elderly man lacking warmth of
hearth and wearing black clothing. This indicates that the process of making scientific
improvements itself can be damaging to the scientist and can eliminate them of their morals, as
black symbolizes evil which suits Rappaccini due to him seeking human test subjects. Once Beatrice
realizes the enormity of the mischief imposed by Rappaccini, she promptly consumed the phial with
the antidote and begins to fade away while having a desperate dialogue with Rappaccini and the
main protagonist, Giovanni Guasconti. This implies that the disastrous effects of scientific
advancement can have such a profound impact on an individual that he considers death or the
potential of death as an alternative to escape the horrors of science. The startling descriptions of the
negative aspects of

Mythology In Mythology
Judging from the sources on the internet (unfortunately, one of them does include wikipedia) and the
snippets I watched of the PBS documentary series that the book The Power of Myth is a companion
for, one of Joseph's Campbell's most foundational ideas is that mythology is one of the primary
sources of a given generation's cultural values, and it is a mechanism used to teach lessons or values
to those young or new to a society. This thesis on mythology can be adapted to modern movies on
Jesus because these movies contain unique alterations and "spins" on the religious stories on Jesus.
In Godspell, the movie's use of a New York setting and a young, diverse cast translate the ministry
of Jesus to the capitalism and peace struggle of the 1970s, and in Jesus Christ Superstar, the movie's
young cast and secular–themed songs translate the existence of Jesus to a generation becoming more
and more scientific. As a result, Godspell remythologizes the ministry of Jesus to reflect and teach
peace and deviation from the status quo, and Jesus Christ Superstar remythologizes Jesus as a figure
to reflect a tension in understanding Jesus in a modern technological age. Because two different
aspects of the 1970s culture is embodied in these modern Jesus myths, movies are a media used to
remythologize Jesus to fit in with each coming generation's struggles, beliefs, and culture. The
aspect of the 1970s that Godspell reflects is the conflict between peace and the status quo. During
the 1970s,

Emotions Are Power. When It Comes To Feelings And Emotions,
Emotions are power. When it comes to feelings and emotions, there can often be disparity between
how one feels and how something truly is. As the author of the article titled, "Invisible: Why Do
People Feel Invisible?" Oliver Cooper writes, "One can feel that they are invisible to the world. And
this is regardless of their physical impact on life, the experience for not being noticed exists." Our
self–image plays an essential role in what we achieve in life and how. There have been multiple
investigations regarding the correlation between having high self–efficacy and being successful.
Famous behavioral psychologist, Albert Bandura, was quoted, "Perceived self–efficacy is defined as
people 's beliefs about their capabilities to produce ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If readers were to trace back the source of when and where Bastian's problems began, it would be
from the death of his mother. Following this tragedy, Bastian's father begins to isolate himself.
Bastian recalls, that his father was once, rather pleasant. He would play with Bastian and would tell
his son stories. Bastian was aware that his father was grieving as well but, "there was an invisible
wall around his father, and no one could get through to him. He never found fault and he never
praised...Bastian felt that as far as his father was concerned, he was not there at all" (Ende 37). From
the very beginning of the book, there is this disconnection between father and son. Cooper explains
that children who experience unempathetic care from their parents in their adolescent years, are
more likely to experience the feeling of isolation and invisibility. Children that experience being
ignored, "will then lead to the ego mind concluding that one is invisible and the associations will
then follow" (Cooper). The ego mind is a term to explain how children create associations with
different actions and behaviors as "safe" or "unsafe." The problem with this behavior, is that what
may be considered safe, may lead to more pain and suffering later in life. For example, Bastian's
father believed that he was handling his grief properly by isolating himself from Bastian. Bastian
eventually began to consider this behavior as normal and can

Michael Ende's The Neverending Story
Translated into 35 different languages and adapted into a 1984 Hollywood classic, Michael Ende's
The Neverending Story (1979) enjoys a cult following worldwide. The book deeply influenced
young adult fantasy fiction in Germany by its story of a timid, overweight boy whose becomes a
hero by being an avid reader and a maker of stories. The Neverending Story is descendent of the
Romantic Movement; a protagonist as a reader who travels between reality and fantasy and awakens
his inner poet. Two decades later, two critically acclaimed books took and transformed Ende's story:
Inkheart (2003) by Cornelia Funke and The City of Dreaming Books (2006) by Walter Moers. These
three books describe a conflict between a reader and book–hating antagonists and

Similarities Between The Odyssey And Paradise Lost
LITERAL CONTEXT
Though many will agree that men and women are fundamentally different, with literature in the past
almost solely focused on men, women play vital roles, nevertheless, that end up dictating the
direction of the story. We see the crucial role of women through the analysis of two of the most
defining works of Western literature: The Odyssey and Paradise Lost.
Summary of the Odyssey:
In Homer's the Odyssey, readers see the titular character Odysseus struggle to make his way back
home after the end of the Trojan War. From going up against monsters and angering god of the seas
Poseidon to entrancing almost every woman he encountered throughout the epic, Odysseus
embodies the paradigm of the ideal man–the ideal hero–even outside ... Show more content on

Upon freeing themselves and rallying together, they vow that, as they were unable to win triumph
over God, they will instead enact revenge by corrupting His new creation. Satan, volunteering to fly
to the Garden of Eden as a scout, sees the splendor of God's Paradise which strengthens his resolve
to lead it towards corruption. At the same time, scenes play out that provide insight into the
relationship between Adam and Eve, specifically during their time in the Garden. Unknown to them,
Satan, disguised in the garden overhears their discussion of God's command not to eat from the Tree
of Life. Soon after, however, he is quickly discovered and banished once again from heaven, yet not
before formulating a plan. He eventually returns and, disguised as a serpent, approaches Eve and
coaxes her into sinning by eating from the tree. This is all the persuasion Adam needs to join her in
her sin, rather falling together than losing her to sin. God, aware of what has taken place, sends his
Son into the garden to deal out judgement for the actions of all involved. On Earth, the land
becomes changed, which will be the future suffering of humankind, leading to hostility between the
man and woman. Satan, having just returned to hell and amidst celebration, then find himself–along
with his followers–unwillingly transformed into

Neil Gaiman's Stardust
Neil Gaiman's Stardust is known to be a charming fairy tale that is within the tradition of The
Neverending Story and The Princess Bride. Neil Gaiman tells the story of Tristan thorn who is love
with a girl considered to be the prettiest in the town. Tristan makes a foolish promise to the girl by
telling her that he would find the falling star that they had watched flashes across the night sky
(Gaiman 1999). The girls promise that she would marry Tristan and this motivates him to go out and
search for it by leaving his home of Wall. He heads out to a perilous land where most things are not
as they seem to appear (Gaiman 1999). Gaiman present his fanciful wit, wildly imaginative plots
and sterling prose which are manifested in Stardust. Gaiman has used some silver–tongued narration
which vividly brings Stardust ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, this is not the case when Gaiman is concerned as he is able to create a successful
sparkling fairy tale within Stardust. Giaman reworks the commonly understood fairy tale using some
slight wink towards the readers through the use of beautiful prose, a mesh of ethereal and grotesque
and some likable characters. Gaiman is able to produce a likable adult fairy tale book through
mixing of romance, humor, airy–fairiness, and grisly realism within a tight little plot. However, to
get a feel of all this mixes up of different entities within the book, the reader need to read about two–
thirds of the book in order to get a feel of what Gaiman is trying to present to the reader (Campbell
& Niffenegger 2003). This make the book quite a confusing book at the start as the reader might mot
well understand the true nature of the book. Hence for readers who are always expectant to find a
catchy topic of element within the first pages of the book, this book might have some

Free Choice In Macbeth
The lives of every single person are directly correlated to all of the choices they have made be it big
or small. In the play "Macbeth", the fates of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were largely caused by the
decisions which they had made earlier in the story. Furthermore, the choices of Mahatma Gandhi
had led him to his position as a leader of a people fighting for their independence. Moreover, in the
stories of the founders of the monster company Apple, their various decisions led them to their
triumph today. The play "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare largely toys with the opposing notions
of predestination and free choice. However, there seems to be some correlation between the choices
which Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have made and the consequences which they were forced to face.
One of the most pivotal decisions made was the one to believe the witches. Without the conviction
that the witch was telling the truth, neither Macbeth nor Lady ... Show more content on

most of his other neighbours and family tried to dissuade him, he ended up in London where he

door to his eventual position as a world revered leader by distancing him from his homeland and
offering him a new perspective, and exposing him to the unjust treatment of his people.
Furthermore, when he arrived in South Africa to become a temporary lawyer for an Indian firm, his

Simulation Proliferation and the City
Mr. Hand wears all black, is tall, thin, and pale. He floats around a dark city and ends far too many
lines with a creepy self–affirming "yesss." In Dark City (Alex Proyas 1998) we see over and over
again indications of the tropes and repetitions that make up the urban/filmic imagination. Not quite
vampires, not quite grey aliens, not quite business men, not quite religious, not quite serial
murderers, Mr. Hand and the other Strangers seem to be archetypal characters of the city. Is the
imagination a domesticating function, territorializing wild occurrence and happenstance into termed
rearrangements of what has come before? Or is it an explosive and infinite fountain of creativity?

Neverending Nightmares
Neverending Nightmares, an intensely dark and psychedelic game, has just been slotted for release

From the premise of the game to the graphics, everything about Neverending Nightmares is messed
up. There is no clear, overarching story. This only further lends to the psychedelic nature of the
game. Various paths with contradictory endings are abounded that will surely disorient you. If that
wasn't enough, the PlayStation enhanced graphics are purely haunting.
Inspired by the dismal drawings of Eduard Gorey, the sketch like visuals create an eerie and intense
atmosphere that sucks the hope out of the gamer. On the PS4, the visuals run at 1080p and 60 frames
per second. The Playstation Vita also runs at an impressive 60 frames per second. With visuals like

Society is so filled with distractions that we can cram our mind into and ignore the real issues. We
occupy ourselves with our PS4 and smartphones to escape the demons within. One should
occasionally take an extended trip into the dank confines of the mind and battle those inner demons.

On my honor, I pledge that I have upheld the Honor Code, and that the work I have done on this

knowledge, been honest as well. The Neverending Story is filled with a world of imagination and
creativity and with imagination, our world can become a land of fantasy. In this paper, creativity and
imagination will be discussed and how they correlate with one another. The world is seen by many

Imagination is useless without creativity. Anyone can imagine themselves walking down a street;
however, it takes a creative person to imagine walking down a street of an alien planet inhabited by
living Cheetos. This scenario might be considered a little outlandish, yet it takes that extreme
creativity to stand apart from other. Albert Einstein once said, "imagination is more important than
knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand while imagination
embraces the entire world and all there ever will be to know and understand." Imagination and
creativity benefit from one another, and one can not achieve greatness without the other.
Imagination and creativity are essential qualities that help innovators have breakthroughs in science,
math, technology, and many other things. To be a creative individual, one must imagine the
impossible and improbable. For example, Michael Endie had to imagine the quicksand that engulfs
life if it has sorrow thoughts. The sand can be directly connected with depression and how, once it
has a person, it constantly drags them down. On the other hand, to be imaginative, an individual
must think outside the parameters of our modern world. For example, in The Neverending Story
Tinys had a pet snail for transport similar to a horse in our world. Michael Endie had

Essay On The Neverending Story By Michael Ende
The neglectful parent is used throughout The Neverending Story by Michael Ende to push the child
protagonist (Bastian) into a journey within himself, within his imagination. On this journey, looking
for answers, he finds the answer is within himself. Upon coming home he becomes the emotional
support for his father, he becomes "parentified". When a child is parentified, they take on the
responsibility of the parent. The parent, for whatever reason is unable to provide the child with care
and relies on them to support the family (Hooper, "Parentification: Measurement, Process, and
Outcome Research"). This is usually seen in families with parents who suffer from addiction or
mental illness. However, in Bastian's case he becomes the parent to a grieving father. ... Show more

Their purpose is to receive all the love and care from their parent in order to grow up and provide
that love and care for someone else. When a parent fails to build this foundation for a child, the child
grows up and goes through life dealing with problems ranging from low self–esteem to severe
psychopathology (Hooper 6). Essentially, when Bastian returns home from his journey he knows
within himself that he needs to become strong for his father, he needs to take on the role of the
parent. We know that Fantastica does not exist in this plane of reality, but for Bastian the
transformation he goes through is very real and has very real outcomes. Bastian does not take into
account the death of his mother but goes back to the condition of his father. Throughout the first half
of the book Bastian refers to his father and what he must be doing. This lack of detail for the
mother's death emphasizes the severe effects of neglect that Bastian's father ignites. Bastian is not
only neglected by his father, but he is mistreated at school and by others in the community where he

Compare And Contrast The Book And The Neverending Story
"Like everyone else, my remembrances of childhood contain hazy memories of Atreyu doing battle
with Gmork, and a young Barrett Oliver as Bastian yelling ""I will do what I dream!"" So, in a
mood to reaffirm my youthful fantasies, I picked up a copy of Michael Ende's 1979 novel upon
which the movie was loosely based, ""The Neverending Story"". I was not surprised that the largely
dark tone of the movie was, of course, much darker, deeper and much more sustained in the novel.
But I am not here to compare the book to the movie, both of which are classics in their own right.
Like the best of what is considered children's literature, ""The Neverending Story"" has an appeal
and a depth that literally begs for continued readings as one grows older. A novel about growth,
maturity, the power (fraught as it is) of imagination, and the necessity of books to provide us with
different perspectives on our world, ""The Neverending Story"" is a challenging children's novel
which respects its readers enough to not treat them like children.

the Berlin Wall, and a dream for post–national fluidity. ""The Neverending Story"" is not just a
novel, but a challenge – for us to mitigate the power of power, to reevaluate our relationships to
people and to literature, to be individuals, and not the ""weak–minded"" followers that Gmork lusts

The American Dream In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
The American dream is a perfect life that everyone has thought of and works for. This dream is
equivalent to a goal, in that it is a force that can push the human spirit to its best. In Of Mice and
Men, John Steinbeck demonstrates how the concept of a dream can empower an individual, but how
the result can break an individual. Curley's wife, Crooks, Lennie, and George all juxtapose the idea
where a dream pushes someone to their fullest potential. The neverending battle that fate and human
spirit engage in is found throughout the major and minor conflicts of this novella thus creating a
reoccuring theme of inevitability and chance that structure the story. Of Mice and Men includes a
couple of characters that directly contrast the notion of a dream keeping someone sane and striving.
Throughout the majority of the novella, Curley's wife is a subject of disdain. However it is confided
to Lennie that she "coulda made somethin of" herself but "ended up [marrying] Curley" (Steinbeck
88). Curley's wife is a fine example of an individual that has lost her dreams and is forever affected
by it. With her marriage to Curley, she gives up on her dreams and the toil that it takes on her life is
evident in the novella. In this way, her life has lost spirit because there is no greater purpose that she
has to fulfill. Steinbeck not only represents broken dreams through direct stories of his characters,
but also by indirectly referencing the lost dreams of those who have passed. Crooks, a stable buck,
sees workers pass by the ranch for years, and sees dreams fade time and time again. Steinbeck uses
Crooks to unveil a cold truth that nobody "ever gets to Heaven and nobody [ever] gets no land"
(Steinbeck 74). Steinbeck's purpose in grouping the two ideas, Heaven and the American dream, is
to assure that his reader is aware of their main connection. The stable buck sees the dreams of men
and compares it to Heaven because he has never seen an individual return with evidence of a
dream's, or Heaven's, existance. It is in this piece of dialogue that Steinbeck shows how unrealistic it
is for a dream to be achieved. The similarities between Crooks and Curley's wife is their disbelief in
the American Dream because it has left them

Normality In Althoug According To Forester By Charles Dickens
However although Dickens was convinced of the superiority of English culture over other ones, he
still believed that there was room for improvement within the society of his time. Not everything
that was considered normal by the Victorians was good and vice versa. As has been mentioned
earlier, he mocked the false philanthropists and advocated the type of charity that gave priority to
the poor at home over the natives in far away countries. Although this was seen by some as another
proof of Dickens' racism, it illustrates the profound love of the author for his fellow Englishmen and
his desire to make his already great country even better. Jasper was living an ordinary life in an
ordinary English town and despite the respect he enjoyed ordinary, for him, was an equivalent of
dull. Normality, in these terms, meant unhappiness, misery and the painful awareness of the fact that
the woman he desired was out of his reach. By contrast, freedom and happiness implied breaking
out of the chains of normality in order to live the life extraordinarily. ... Show more content on

Consequently, we can infer that we were not supposed destinguish one universal concept of
normality out of those that were presented to us by the author, but to understand why and how
different ideas of normality got to become the reality of different characters. Although each case
involved breaking different social norms, not all the violations were evaluated the same. Since the
severity with which a crime gets judged depends on the level of the conventional formality of the
norm that was broken, a more rigorous panishment is reserved for the norms which the society find
more important. Obviously, if a violation of a norm involves harming other people, in terms of
causing physical and psychical pain, then the repercussions and the stigma will be

Analysis Of Elie Wiesel's Night
The end of a story is just as important as the beginning. The end of a story seeks to bring a sort of
closure to the adventure that was just had in the pages before. With the more intense the story the
more difficult the end is. Elie Wiesel's book Night has an ending that seems rather abrupt but is
none–the–less appropriate to the horror that was written on the pages before. The title itself is
significant to the end of the story, not just because it is where the story begins, but because the end
of the end of the story is the end of the long night that was the Holocaust. Throughout the story the
referral to the suffering Elie and his father endured along with the other Jews as one long night was
a constant reoccurring theme. On page thirty–four

How Does Shakespeare Present Hermia In A Midsummer Night's...
From a young age, the the idea of finding your one true love is a monumental step towards
happiness. Women are often stereotyped as "love obsessed", playing "family" with dolls and
planning weddings while still young girls. Neverending love, care, and bliss a woman finds with her
significant other becomes desirable to friends, family, even strangers around the couple. Oftentimes,
being surrounded by people in love can cause a woman to search for her own "special someone"
because she doesn't want to be "that friend" who bribes a friend to be her date to her fifteenth high
school reunion. Not all women have to search in order to find true love. As a woman spends time
with and begins to learn more about about a male peer, she may begin to fall in love, leading to a
happy ever after and cute stories to tell at their wedding reception. No matter how a woman falls in

Things They Carried Ap Prompt
Prompt: In a well–developed essay, explain how Tim O'Brien in pages 76–78 of The Things They
Carried uses rhetorical and literary devices to argue what he believes constitutes a true war story. In
this excerpt from The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien discusses a common theme found in the
entire novel: the important components of a "true war story." In this scene specifically, he recounts
an instance when Mitchell Sanders told him a war story and how it fits the qualities of what he
believes is a "true war story." He argues that a "true war story" should have longevity, hard to
decipher morality, no generalizations, concreteness and the ability to make your stomach believe,
and he is able to do so through his use of repetition, comparisons, and dialogue. Primarily, O'Brien
uses repetition to introduce the components of a war story that he wishes to discuss. For example, he
starts off the passage with, "You can tell a true war story by the way it never seems to end." And in

After his initial telling of the story, Sanders comes back a second time to clarify it. He states, "Last
night, man, I had to make up a few things," to which O'Brien replies, "I know that." This reveals that
while Sanders feels guilty for adding false information to his story, O'Brien already knew that the
entire story was not true and was indifferent to it. In other words, for O'Brien, content validity is not
necessary for a war story to be "true." Furthermore, later on in their dialogue, Sanders is hesitant to
tell the moral of the story and only does so after much prodding from O'Brien. He finally states,
"That quiet–just listen. There's your moral." Which serves as a preliminary to O'Brien's notion that
the moral of a story is not often easy to grasp. Therefore, O'Brien uses dialogue in the passage to
give insight into his views on the

Timeless And Timelessness In Literature
One theme in literature, and British literature alike, is timelessness. Many pieces that are famous
have been passed down through generations and readers all over the world still relate to it through
love or comedy. Two works that capture timelessness and universality are "A Valediction:
Forbidding Mourning" written by John Donne and Much Ado About Nothing written by William
Shakespeare. What often draws people to literature is raw emotion. "A Valediction: Forbidding
Mourning" perfectly fits the raw emotion and timelessness with true love. This poem by John Donne
captivates readers' imaginations through his idea of love extending past death and the eternal love of
two people. Love songs and love stories endure time because they are always relevant because love
is always relevant. Donne's poem can be used in a variety of situations and has endured because of
the sweetness and vulnerability of it. Donne writes, "Thy firmness makes my circle just, / And
makes me end where I begun," (Donne 35–36). These lines are one part of a conceit that likens his
and his wife's love to a compass and that she completes him. If people are in love, romantic gestures
and nice words can make the love grow stronger, so the message of Donne continues to be passed on
through people in love. Poems like this make hearts swell and, on the education side, use many
aspects of figurative language. "A Valediction" continues being taught because of the beautiful use
of language and metaphors and how Donne

Mindfulness Analysis
Mindfulness: How are we to live in the present? Why is it important?
God wants us to live in the present because of how, as Screwtape has said, an intersection of our
time with eternity. What this means is that by being in the present, we realize how we are in the
presence of God. Living in the Future means to focus of our own future well being while living in
the present means to be grateful of the things that are and focus on not only our own well being but
of others. Only in the present can we truly see God.
Living in the present would then mean to be aware. It means that we are to focus on the feelings, the
people, and the situation we are in, either enjoying the breeze of a nice day or listening to the
neverending stories of our mothers.

However, emotions are still used by the Holy Spirit to interact with us, thus it is still important to
know the source of these emotions to avoid being manipulated by them. We can confidently say that
we can discern those emotions created by the devil by looking at the fruit of the emotions. If they
cause harm and deceit then those are emotions that we are to let go and avoid. However, emotions
that bear good fruit can still be from the devil, for the purpose of deceiving us. As Houston said, as
humans it is impossible for us to have a clear cut way in determining what is truly from the Holy
Spirit. All we can do as Christians is to receive these emotions in a cautious way, being aware of the
fruits of these emotions and asking those wiser than us to proceed with our

Jacob's Story: Neverending Nightmares Of The Holocaust
Neverending Nightmares of the Holocaust
According to studies done, The Holocaust had negative effects on people who had to live through it.
Jews were threatened by the Gestapo, so they were forced to do as they were ordered. The jews were
forced into ghettos and concentration camps, where their human rights were stolen and they were
treated like animals. As a result of The Holocaust six to nine million people died. According to these
three sources, Holocaust victims were abused, lost loved ones, and treated less as humans and more
like animals.
The Holocaust caused lifetime effects to all that had to go through it. Many of the jews who were

Personal Narrative: What It Means To Be Human
The year is 2015. The world is 4.6 billion years old, and humans have been around for 200,000
years (Dalrymple). It has taken this long for the acceptance of L.G.B.T. people to be a common
belief. When a baby is first formed, their DNA is unique compared to anybody else in this earth;
therefore, humans know each person is different. Yet, we find it acceptable to discriminate a human
based on the spouse they go home to at the end of the night. For centuries, people have had to
experience the things they love the most being taken away from them. When a person loses
something they love, the only joy left to experience is from memories. But, what if our society
controlled that too? We would become human robots. Not capable of emotion, sympathy, or
anything really. That's why if I had to choose one thing to fight for I'd choose love.
Every feeling the human life consists of involves love; hate even is traced back to love in a

Essay on The Neverending Story: A Classic Novel
The Neverending Story: A Classic Novel
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende perfectly draws the image of a successful novel because
it's overall effect on the reader is intimate and it recognizes itself as a different novel from others
especially using a metaphor of stories giving birth to other stories. Considered as a children's novel,
it should be given a chance to prove itself in the realm of other such intelligent novels. The novel
expands this idea that stories are a result of other stories, it resembles the monomyth cycle for a
simplified and similar understanding of its complex aspects and it finally reminds the reader of
belonging and loving needs. Thus, this novel by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This book represents a celebration of unity in which it is proven by Atreyu and Bastian who set the
stage and begins what has to be begun. Bastian plays the role of a heroic human being in a human
world reading nothing but a book called The Neverending Story while Atreyu characterizes an
immortal hero living out struggles inside the book. Their separate worlds are furnished together to
bring a united conclusion, but with the reality and truth of their past, they are again separated; but in
a resolving mood. This coming together of reality and fiction associates with the reader's mind
because it justifies and gives a reason to connect with The Neverending Story by Michael Ende.
Thus, this book deserves to be a significant part of the canon because it deepens the realistic illusion
that stories come from other stories, it is identical in many ways to the monomyth cycle (by Joseph
Campbell), and finally it reminds the reader of the need of belonging and love.
This book employs the idea that stories come from other stories in that it draws the same parallels
between each other. The Neverending Story by Michael Ende shows this concept by settings
examples throughout the novel. "Didn't you know that Fantastica is the land of stories? A story can
be new and yet tell about olden times. The past comes into existence with the story." (Ende

A Sound Of Thunder Literary Devices
The future, what does It hold? What does it look like? Ray Douglas Bradbury, is a self taught
American author, who described many of these types of ideas in countless of his short stories.
Bradbury is very descriptive when it comes to describing a setting as shown in "A Sound Of
Thunder", "The Veldt", and "The Pedestrian". Bradbury uses imagery in "A Sound Of Thunder" he
describes the T–Rex in a way that is quite terrifying " He is a terrible warrior. Each thigh a ton of
meat, ivory, and steel mesh" ("A Sound Of Thunder" 77). This creates an image in the readers mind
by describing how big and scary this beast is to the human eye. Bradbury also uses imagery when he
describes the setting of the story, when the characters time travel to the past in a jungle where they're
astonished by how big this jungle is " The jungle was high and broad and the jungle was the entire
world forever and forever"("A Sound Of Thunder" 75 & 76). Bradbury describes the jungle in a way
where the reader can imagine a large "neverending" jungle. Bradbury also uses imagery when the

The Road: Still The Good Guys And The Bad Guys
The Road Essay
In The Road, motifs throughout the novel formulate into not one, but several messages. "Still the
good guys" and the "Bad Guys" develop a raging war against what's right and wrong in this book.
One message these two motifs perpetuate is that, there will always be evil in this world; but with
evil, comes good. There always has to be a balance between the two. This 'balance' is the very
essence of our world, and literature. Sometimes though, the balance can be slightly tipped in the
favor of evil. I believe this book was leaning towards the favor of malevolence.
My first claim for this essay is that despite the harshness and catastrophe of the world around them,
the protagonists in the novel still stick to their 'old world' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Even though all around them is completely hopeless, they pursue on. I think "carrying the fire" is an
allegory, or an allusion to the greek story of Prometheus. The Man believes his son carries the "fire"
just as Prometheus did. The fire in the story is essentially the last dying flames of humanity. In this
book, ash and the neverending grey represent death, and if that is death, then the "fire" is the hope
that life will renew itself again in this world of ruin and decay. Also, with the same Prometheus
concept, the Man passes down knowledge to the Boy about survival. Hopefully, later on the Boy
will gradually pass that knowledge down to other survivors he meets in his travels. Lastly, the Boy
acts as the fire to the Man himself. The Boy is the only reason why the Man continues on. And now,
despite the Man himself being extinguished, the Boy will tread on through a world that is "barren,
silent, godless."(Page 4). Reigniting the last dim flames of humanity to whomever he meets. When
the boy asks if the fire is real, the father says, "It's inside you. It was always there. I can see it" (page

Literary Analysis Of A Worn Path By Eudora Welty
"A Worn Path" Literary Analysis "A Worn Path" is a short story written by Eudora Welty that
describes the trail Phoenix Jackson, an elderly African American lady, takes in order to reach a
certain town during a festive holiday. Due to the imagery and terminology used to describe Phoenix
such as, "[...] an old Negro woman [...]" (Welty, 221), it can be assumed that the story takes place
during Christmas time in the rural countryside of the southern US, and presumably around the
1940's. Nonetheless, Phoenix Jackson, the protagonist of this story, is guided through a mysterious
path of natural dangers in an utmost forlorn disposition with a limited omniscient point of view.
Furthermore, the third person narration with a limited omniscience that is exclusive to Phoenix
herself tells about her experiences of the path and impressions she has upon strangers and people.
Such was observed when the author denoted, "Finally, trembling all over, she stood free, and after a
moment dared to stoop for her cane. 'Sun so high!' she cried, leaning back and looking, while the
thick tears went over her eyes. 'The time getting all gone here" (Welty, 222) The way the author
described Phoenix's actions, and how she, for the most part, spoke her thoughts out loud in a stream
of consciousness form, allowed the reader to only be able to comprehend her impressions. Such
descriptions and characterizations are not seen within other characters throughout the story. This
settles the direct basis for a limited omniscient point of view because the reader, through the
perspective of an eagle that observes Phoenix, is able to view life and the dangers along the way
through her eyes and not through the perspectives of secondary characters such as the white hunter
or nurse. In addition, another important literary aspect detected in Welty's work is voice. Voice, in
this case, served the generous purpose of giving vitality to Phoenix's character. Such can be noted in
her colloquial and casual form of language as seen in dialogue like, "who be you the ghost of? [...]
My senses is gone. I too old. I the oldest people I ever know" (Welty, 223). Her informal language
allows the reader to receive the impression that Phoenix is not from a wealthy and

Argumentative Essay: The Neverending Story
Faded colors. Unclear voices. Pixelated faces. The qualities of a movie that I was so unfamiliar with
in this technologically advanced century ended up being so comforting. I sat crisscross in front of
the television, my eyes fixated upon the screen. Propped up on various pillows and blankets, I
settled into my seat to watch The Neverending Story once again. The exact number is unknown, but
I know I watched it enough to have specific scenes memorized. A childhood that seems so distant
suddenly becomes close in measurements of one hundred thirty minutes. One hundred thirty minutes
of a beautiful blend of animation and realism, a questioning of what happens when imagination
meets reality. Each time I watched The Neverending Story I expected it to be better than the last,
although when I was younger, my missions while watching the movie were different.
How can a story be never ending? All of my books have a first page and a last page. Surely there
must always be an ending! Even the fictional movies have endings. This movie will end at some
point too. It has to.

Symbolism In A Thousand Splendid Suns

  • 1. Symbolism In A Thousand Splendid Suns In the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini uses the colors of blue and white to represent change in Laila's life. An example of when they appear is on the day a bomb hit Laila's house and kills her family. On that day, "Mammy was wearing the same cobalt blue dress she had worn the day of the lunch party four months earlier" (192 Hosseini). It is moments after Laila notices her mother's dress that the young girl's life dramatically changes; her family is now blown to oblivion by a stray rocket that leaves her fading in and out of consciousness in the desolate remains of her house. Khaled Hosseini uses the colors blue and white here to not only symbolize oncoming change, but to also give the reader a greater insight into the events to come. The white of the dress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By Hosseini having Mammy wear this dress on the day of her death, he is thus securing the demise of Mammy and Babi in order to bring change into Laila's life. Another instance in which colors of blue and white appeared is after Mariam killed Rasheed with a shovel. It was the day of Laila's departure with Tariq to Pakistan that Mariam wore "a dark blue sweater buttoned in the front [with] white cotton trousers" (360). The change Laila faces here is the loss of a dear friend to the harsh punishments of Sharia Law. Mariam had affected Laila's life in so many ways, she made the solitary confinement in Rasheed's house bearable, she became the mother figure that Laila had never experienced, and most of all, Mariam saved Laila's life by killing Rasheed. Mariam killing Rasheed ultimately lead to her execution , which left Laila once again motherless. The author uses the color blue here to symbolize the night sky above Kabul and the color white to symbolize the thousand splendid suns that dot it. He has Mariam wear them because she, within herself, is like the thousand splendid suns that hang over the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Does Nathaniel Hawthrone Use Light Imagery In Rappaccini's... Although advancements in science are constantly upgrading the standards of living, the treacherous backlashes associated with such improvements are seldom recognized. In Nathaniel Hawthrone's "Rappaccini's Daughter", a young man finds himself intertwined in a dilemma concerning the work of a psychotic scientist along with his captivating daughter. The use of light and dark imagery within the story, ranging from purple gem–like flowers to the sickly scientist, imparts Hawthrone's belief that scientific discovery possesses productive and destructive powers. The use of light imagery emphasizes the productive nature of scientific progress. By the shattered marble fountain, a magnificent shrub adorned with flowers appearing as purple gems glistened ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fluids from one of the artificial blossoms dripped onto a colored reptile's head, causing it to contort violently and pass away agonizingly. This imparts how science is able to devise potent materials capable of stripping organisms of their lives. A delicate winged insect was attracted by the heavy perfumes of the artificial flowers and was killed, suggesting that detrimental scientific discoveries can destroy innocence by luring unsuspecting individuals into its pitfall and annihilate them. The psychotic scientist, Giacomo Rappaccini, is described as a sickly, elderly man lacking warmth of hearth and wearing black clothing. This indicates that the process of making scientific improvements itself can be damaging to the scientist and can eliminate them of their morals, as black symbolizes evil which suits Rappaccini due to him seeking human test subjects. Once Beatrice realizes the enormity of the mischief imposed by Rappaccini, she promptly consumed the phial with the antidote and begins to fade away while having a desperate dialogue with Rappaccini and the main protagonist, Giovanni Guasconti. This implies that the disastrous effects of scientific advancement can have such a profound impact on an individual that he considers death or the potential of death as an alternative to escape the horrors of science. • 5. Mythology In Mythology Judging from the sources on the internet (unfortunately, one of them does include wikipedia) and the snippets I watched of the PBS documentary series that the book The Power of Myth is a companion for, one of Joseph's Campbell's most foundational ideas is that mythology is one of the primary sources of a given generation's cultural values, and it is a mechanism used to teach lessons or values to those young or new to a society. This thesis on mythology can be adapted to modern movies on Jesus because these movies contain unique alterations and "spins" on the religious stories on Jesus. In Godspell, the movie's use of a New York setting and a young, diverse cast translate the ministry of Jesus to the capitalism and peace struggle of the 1970s, and in Jesus Christ Superstar, the movie's young cast and secular–themed songs translate the existence of Jesus to a generation becoming more and more scientific. As a result, Godspell remythologizes the ministry of Jesus to reflect and teach peace and deviation from the status quo, and Jesus Christ Superstar remythologizes Jesus as a figure to reflect a tension in understanding Jesus in a modern technological age. Because two different aspects of the 1970s culture is embodied in these modern Jesus myths, movies are a media used to remythologize Jesus to fit in with each coming generation's struggles, beliefs, and culture. The aspect of the 1970s that Godspell reflects is the conflict between peace and the status quo. During the 1970s, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Emotions Are Power. When It Comes To Feelings And Emotions, Emotions are power. When it comes to feelings and emotions, there can often be disparity between how one feels and how something truly is. As the author of the article titled, "Invisible: Why Do People Feel Invisible?" Oliver Cooper writes, "One can feel that they are invisible to the world. And this is regardless of their physical impact on life, the experience for not being noticed exists." Our self–image plays an essential role in what we achieve in life and how. There have been multiple investigations regarding the correlation between having high self–efficacy and being successful. Famous behavioral psychologist, Albert Bandura, was quoted, "Perceived self–efficacy is defined as people 's beliefs about their capabilities to produce ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If readers were to trace back the source of when and where Bastian's problems began, it would be from the death of his mother. Following this tragedy, Bastian's father begins to isolate himself. Bastian recalls, that his father was once, rather pleasant. He would play with Bastian and would tell his son stories. Bastian was aware that his father was grieving as well but, "there was an invisible wall around his father, and no one could get through to him. He never found fault and he never praised...Bastian felt that as far as his father was concerned, he was not there at all" (Ende 37). From the very beginning of the book, there is this disconnection between father and son. Cooper explains that children who experience unempathetic care from their parents in their adolescent years, are more likely to experience the feeling of isolation and invisibility. Children that experience being ignored, "will then lead to the ego mind concluding that one is invisible and the associations will then follow" (Cooper). The ego mind is a term to explain how children create associations with different actions and behaviors as "safe" or "unsafe." The problem with this behavior, is that what may be considered safe, may lead to more pain and suffering later in life. For example, Bastian's father believed that he was handling his grief properly by isolating himself from Bastian. Bastian eventually began to consider this behavior as normal and can ... • 9. Michael Ende's The Neverending Story Translated into 35 different languages and adapted into a 1984 Hollywood classic, Michael Ende's The Neverending Story (1979) enjoys a cult following worldwide. The book deeply influenced young adult fantasy fiction in Germany by its story of a timid, overweight boy whose becomes a hero by being an avid reader and a maker of stories. The Neverending Story is descendent of the Romantic Movement; a protagonist as a reader who travels between reality and fantasy and awakens his inner poet. Two decades later, two critically acclaimed books took and transformed Ende's story: Inkheart (2003) by Cornelia Funke and The City of Dreaming Books (2006) by Walter Moers. • 11. Similarities Between The Odyssey And Paradise Lost LITERAL CONTEXT Though many will agree that men and women are fundamentally different, with literature in the past almost solely focused on men, women play vital roles, nevertheless, that end up dictating the direction of the story. We see the crucial role of women through the analysis of two of the most defining works of Western literature: The Odyssey and Paradise Lost. Summary of the Odyssey: In Homer's the Odyssey, readers see the titular character Odysseus struggle to make his way back home after the end of the Trojan War. From going up against monsters and angering god of the seas Poseidon to entrancing almost every woman he encountered throughout the epic, Odysseus embodies the paradigm of the ideal man–the ideal hero–even outside ... Upon freeing themselves and rallying together, they vow that, as they were unable to win triumph over God, they will instead enact revenge by corrupting His new creation. Satan, volunteering to fly to the Garden of Eden as a scout, sees the splendor of God's Paradise which strengthens his resolve to lead it towards corruption. At the same time, scenes play out that provide insight into the relationship between Adam and Eve, specifically during their time in the Garden. Unknown to them, Satan, disguised in the garden overhears their discussion of God's command not to eat from the Tree of Life. Soon after, however, he is quickly discovered and banished once again from heaven, yet not before formulating a plan. He eventually returns and, disguised as a serpent, approaches Eve and coaxes her into sinning by eating from the tree. This is all the persuasion Adam needs to join her in her sin, rather falling together than losing her to sin. God, aware of what has taken place, sends his Son into the garden to deal out judgement for the actions of all involved. On Earth, the land becomes changed, which will be the future suffering of humankind, leading to hostility between the man and woman. • 13. Neil Gaiman's Stardust Neil Gaiman's Stardust is known to be a charming fairy tale that is within the tradition of The Neverending Story and The Princess Bride. Neil Gaiman tells the story of Tristan thorn who is love with a girl considered to be the prettiest in the town. Tristan makes a foolish promise to the girl by telling her that he would find the falling star that they had watched flashes across the night sky (Gaiman 1999). The girls promise that she would marry Tristan and this motivates him to go out and search for it by leaving his home of Wall. He heads out to a perilous land where most things are not as they seem to appear (Gaiman 1999). Gaiman present his fanciful wit, wildly imaginative plots and sterling prose which are manifested in Stardust. Gaiman has used some silver–tongued narration which vividly brings Stardust ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, this is not the case when Gaiman is concerned as he is able to create a successful sparkling fairy tale within Stardust. Giaman reworks the commonly understood fairy tale using some slight wink towards the readers through the use of beautiful prose, a mesh of ethereal and grotesque and some likable characters. Gaiman is able to produce a likable adult fairy tale book through mixing of romance, humor, airy–fairiness, and grisly realism within a tight little plot. However, to get a feel of all this mixes up of different entities within the book, the reader need to read about two– thirds of the book in order to get a feel of what Gaiman is trying to present to the reader (Campbell & Niffenegger 2003). This make the book quite a confusing book at the start as the reader might mot well understand the true nature of the book. Hence for readers who are always expectant to find a catchy topic of element within the first pages of the book, this book might have some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Free Choice In Macbeth The lives of every single person are directly correlated to all of the choices they have made be it big or small. In the play "Macbeth", the fates of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were largely caused by the decisions which they had made earlier in the story. Furthermore, the choices of Mahatma Gandhi had led him to his position as a leader of a people fighting for their independence. Moreover, in the stories of the founders of the monster company Apple, their various decisions led them to their triumph today. The play "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare largely toys with the opposing notions of predestination and free choice. However, there seems to be some correlation between the choices which Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have made and the consequences which they were forced to face. One of the most pivotal decisions made was the one to believe the witches. Without the conviction that the witch was telling the truth, neither Macbeth nor Lady ... Although, most of his other neighbours and family tried to dissuade him, he ended up in London where he studied law to become a barrister. This decision to go across the sea to another land opened up the door to his eventual position as a world revered leader by distancing him from his homeland and offering him a new perspective, and exposing him to the unjust treatment of his people. Furthermore, when he arrived in South Africa to become a temporary lawyer for an Indian firm, his decision to stay and help the Indian community there developed his leadership skills and nurtured his morals and ethics, furthering his progress to his position as a leader of a ... He floats around a dark city and ends far too many lines with a creepy self–affirming "yesss." In Dark City (Alex Proyas 1998) we see over and over again indications of the tropes and repetitions that make up the urban/filmic imagination. Not quite vampires, not quite grey aliens, not quite business men, not quite religious, not quite serial murderers, Mr. Hand and the other Strangers seem to be archetypal characters of the city. In 3ed grade me and my dad and stepmom learned of my moms addiction. I stopped seeing my mom for a long time. During that time I discovered the joy of reading. Neverending Nightmares Neverending Nightmares, an intensely dark and psychedelic game, has just been slotted for release on PS4 and PlayStation Vita according to Creative Director Matt Gilgenbach. The game holds some heavy themes that Gilgenbach takes very personally. For those looking for a happy escape from reality, this isn't it. For those looking to explore the darker and trippier sides of mental illness, then Neverending Nightmares may be the one for you. USE YOUR PS4 TO PLAY AROUND WITH DEPRESSION Mental illness has been garnering an increasing amount of attention these days. This only further lends to the psychedelic nature of the game. Various paths with contradictory endings are abounded that will surely disorient you. If that wasn't enough, the PlayStation enhanced graphics are purely haunting. Inspired by the dismal drawings of Eduard Gorey, the sketch like visuals create an eerie and intense atmosphere that sucks the hope out of the gamer. On the PS4, the visuals run at 1080p and 60 frames per second. The Playstation Vita also runs at an impressive 60 frames per second. All I know is I need to tell you this story before it's too late. Before he comes back. I was an adventurer before I ended up here, wherever I am. My search team and I were on an expedition looking for Pandora's Box. It was said to contain all the evils of the world and whoever found it would get paid a hefty amount of money. My best friend and I were going to go looking for it as our last glorious expedition before we retired from our adventures. We were only about 25 at the time. My best friend Denzel had brown hair and blue eyes and was getting ready to settle down with his sweetheart, Esmeralda. As for me I had brown hair just like my friend's but my eyes were the greenest of greens and I wasn 't ready to settle down. I was good with the ladies, which kind of comes with the job title, and I wasn't ready to give that up. But I also wasn 't about to let my buddy go through the married life alone. I had to be there for him so I was going to go anywhere with him. Denzel and I gathered up our crew and by the time our expedition started, it was about mid August... no mid June all I remember is it was sometime during the summer. We set up our camp in one of the only clearings we could find and went on our journey looking for Pandora's Box. Swanson September 22, 2017 On my honor, I pledge that I have upheld the Honor Code, and that the work I have done on this assignment has been honest, and that the work of others in this class has, to the best of my knowledge, been honest as well. The Neverending Story is filled with a world of imagination and creativity and with imagination, our world can become a land of fantasy. Anyone can imagine themselves walking down a street; however, it takes a creative person to imagine walking down a street of an alien planet inhabited by living Cheetos. This scenario might be considered a little outlandish, yet it takes that extreme creativity to stand apart from other. Albert Einstein once said, "imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand while imagination embraces the entire world and all there ever will be to know and understand." Imagination and creativity benefit from one another, and one can not achieve greatness without the other. Imagination and creativity are essential qualities that help innovators have breakthroughs in science, math, technology, and many other things. To be a creative individual, one must imagine the impossible and improbable. For example, Michael Endie had to imagine the quicksand that engulfs life if it has sorrow thoughts. The sand can be directly connected with depression and how, once it has a person, it constantly drags them down. On the other hand, to be imaginative, an individual must think outside the parameters of our modern world. • 29. Essay On The Neverending Story By Michael Ende The neglectful parent is used throughout The Neverending Story by Michael Ende to push the child protagonist (Bastian) into a journey within himself, within his imagination. On this journey, looking for answers, he finds the answer is within himself. Upon coming home he becomes the emotional support for his father, he becomes "parentified". When a child is parentified, they take on the responsibility of the parent. The parent, for whatever reason is unable to provide the child with care and relies on them to support the family (Hooper, "Parentification: Measurement, Process, and Outcome Research"). This is usually seen in families with parents who suffer from addiction or mental illness. However, in Bastian's case he becomes the parent to a grieving father. ... When a parent fails to build this foundation for a child, the child grows up and goes through life dealing with problems ranging from low self–esteem to severe psychopathology (Hooper 6). Essentially, when Bastian returns home from his journey he knows within himself that he needs to become strong for his father, he needs to take on the role of the parent. We know that Fantastica does not exist in this plane of reality, but for Bastian the transformation he goes through is very real and has very real outcomes. Bastian does not take into account the death of his mother but goes back to the condition of his father. Throughout the first half of the book Bastian refers to his father and what he must be doing. This lack of detail for the mother's death emphasizes the severe effects of neglect that Bastian's father ignites. • 31. Compare And Contrast The Book And The Neverending Story "Like everyone else, my remembrances of childhood contain hazy memories of Atreyu doing battle with Gmork, and a young Barrett Oliver as Bastian yelling ""I will do what I dream!"" So, in a mood to reaffirm my youthful fantasies, I picked up a copy of Michael Ende's 1979 novel upon which the movie was loosely based, ""The Neverending Story"". I was not surprised that the largely dark tone of the movie was, of course, much darker, deeper and much more sustained in the novel. But I am not here to compare the book to the movie, both of which are classics in their own right. Like the best of what is considered children's literature, ""The Neverending Story"" has an appeal and a depth that literally begs for continued readings as one grows older. A novel about growth, maturity, the power (fraught as it is) of imagination, and the necessity of books to provide us with different perspectives on our world, ""The Neverending Story"" is a challenging children's novel which respects its readers enough to not treat them like children. ""The Neverending Story"" is not just a novel, but a challenge – for us to mitigate the power of power, to reevaluate our relationships to people and to literature, to be individuals, and not the ""weak–minded"" followers that Gmork lusts after. • 39. The American Dream In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men The American dream is a perfect life that everyone has thought of and works for. This dream is equivalent to a goal, in that it is a force that can push the human spirit to its best. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck demonstrates how the concept of a dream can empower an individual, but how the result can break an individual. Curley's wife, Crooks, Lennie, and George all juxtapose the idea where a dream pushes someone to their fullest potential. The neverending battle that fate and human spirit engage in is found throughout the major and minor conflicts of this novella thus creating a reoccuring theme of inevitability and chance that structure the story. Of Mice and Men includes a couple of characters that directly contrast the notion of a dream keeping someone sane and striving. Throughout the majority of the novella, Curley's wife is a subject of disdain. However it is confided to Lennie that she "coulda made somethin of" herself but "ended up [marrying] Curley" (Steinbeck 88). Curley's wife is a fine example of an individual that has lost her dreams and is forever affected by it. With her marriage to Curley, she gives up on her dreams and the toil that it takes on her life is evident in the novella. In this way, her life has lost spirit because there is no greater purpose that she has to fulfill. Steinbeck not only represents broken dreams through direct stories of his characters, but also by indirectly referencing the lost dreams of those who have passed. Crooks, a stable buck, sees workers pass by the ranch for years, and sees dreams fade time and time again. Steinbeck uses Crooks to unveil a cold truth that nobody "ever gets to Heaven and nobody [ever] gets no land" (Steinbeck 74). Steinbeck's purpose in grouping the two ideas, Heaven and the American dream, is to assure that his reader is aware of their main connection. The stable buck sees the dreams of men and compares it to Heaven because he has never seen an individual return with evidence of a dream's, or Heaven's, existance. It is in this piece of dialogue that Steinbeck shows how unrealistic it is for a dream to be achieved. The similarities between Crooks and Curley's wife is their disbelief in the American Dream because it has left them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Normality In Althoug According To Forester By Charles Dickens However although Dickens was convinced of the superiority of English culture over other ones, he still believed that there was room for improvement within the society of his time. Not everything that was considered normal by the Victorians was good and vice versa. As has been mentioned earlier, he mocked the false philanthropists and advocated the type of charity that gave priority to the poor at home over the natives in far away countries. Although this was seen by some as another proof of Dickens' racism, it illustrates the profound love of the author for his fellow Englishmen and his desire to make his already great country even better. Jasper was living an ordinary life in an ordinary English town and despite the respect he enjoyed ordinary, for him, was an equivalent of dull. Normality, in these terms, meant unhappiness, misery and the painful awareness of the fact that the woman he desired was out of his reach. By contrast, freedom and happiness implied breaking out of the chains of normality in order to live the life extraordinarily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Things They Carried Ap Prompt Prompt: In a well–developed essay, explain how Tim O'Brien in pages 76–78 of The Things They Carried uses rhetorical and literary devices to argue what he believes constitutes a true war story. In this excerpt from The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien discusses a common theme found in the entire novel: the important components of a "true war story." In this scene specifically, he recounts an instance when Mitchell Sanders told him a war story and how it fits the qualities of what he believes is a "true war story." He argues that a "true war story" should have longevity, hard to decipher morality, no generalizations, concreteness and the ability to make your stomach believe, and he is able to do so through his use of repetition, comparisons, and dialogue. Primarily, O'Brien uses repetition to introduce the components of a war story that he wishes to discuss. For example, he starts off the passage with, "You can tell a true war story by the way it never seems to end." And in the next ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After his initial telling of the story, Sanders comes back a second time to clarify it. He states, "Last night, man, I had to make up a few things," to which O'Brien replies, "I know that." This reveals that while Sanders feels guilty for adding false information to his story, O'Brien already knew that the entire story was not true and was indifferent to it. In other words, for O'Brien, content validity is not necessary for a war story to be "true." Furthermore, later on in their dialogue, Sanders is hesitant to tell the moral of the story and only does so after much prodding from O'Brien. He finally states, "That quiet–just listen. There's your moral." Which serves as a preliminary to O'Brien's notion that the moral of a story is not often easy to grasp. • 53. Timeless And Timelessness In Literature One theme in literature, and British literature alike, is timelessness. Many pieces that are famous have been passed down through generations and readers all over the world still relate to it through love or comedy. Two works that capture timelessness and universality are "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" written by John Donne and Much Ado About Nothing written by William Shakespeare. What often draws people to literature is raw emotion. "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" perfectly fits the raw emotion and timelessness with true love. This poem by John Donne captivates readers' imaginations through his idea of love extending past death and the eternal love of two people. Love songs and love stories endure time because they are always relevant because love is always relevant. Donne's poem can be used in a variety of situations and has endured because of the sweetness and vulnerability of it. Donne writes, "Thy firmness makes my circle just, / And makes me end where I begun," (Donne 35–36). These lines are one part of a conceit that likens his and his wife's love to a compass and that she completes him. If people are in love, romantic gestures and nice words can make the love grow stronger, so the message of Donne continues to be passed on through people in love. Poems like this make hearts swell and, on the education side, use many aspects of figurative language. It has taken this long for the acceptance of L.G.B.T. people to be a common belief. When a baby is first formed, their DNA is unique compared to anybody else in this earth; therefore, humans know each person is different. Yet, we find it acceptable to discriminate a human based on the spouse they go home to at the end of the night. For centuries, people have had to experience the things they love the most being taken away from them. When a person loses something they love, the only joy left to experience is from memories. But, what if our society controlled that too? We would become human robots. Not capable of emotion, sympathy, or anything really. That's why if I had to choose one thing to fight for I'd choose love. If I had to have my parents choose my lifelong partner, I would change my name and move to Mexico. If our society was like India's people, there would be no way I could settle for that conformity. There is no law saying the girls must follow through with marriage; however, whether they would like to or not, girls still do it for their parents and tradition. Indians do not see arranged marriages as being wrong. They think that "brides are the embodiment of that family's honor and pride" ("Arranged Marriages and Dowry"). But, us in the West see this tradition as an unnecessary custom. Rejection from your own blood, your own friends, and your own people, is not right. No dowry in the world could pay for love. • 63. Essay on The Neverending Story: A Classic Novel The Neverending Story: A Classic Novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende perfectly draws the image of a successful novel because it's overall effect on the reader is intimate and it recognizes itself as a different novel from others especially using a metaphor of stories giving birth to other stories. Considered as a children's novel, it should be given a chance to prove itself in the realm of other such intelligent novels. The novel expands this idea that stories are a result of other stories, it resembles the monomyth cycle for a simplified and similar understanding of its complex aspects and it finally reminds the reader of belonging and loving needs. Thus, this novel by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This book represents a celebration of unity in which it is proven by Atreyu and Bastian who set the stage and begins what has to be begun. Bastian plays the role of a heroic human being in a human world reading nothing but a book called The Neverending Story while Atreyu characterizes an immortal hero living out struggles inside the book. Their separate worlds are furnished together to bring a united conclusion, but with the reality and truth of their past, they are again separated; but in a resolving mood. This coming together of reality and fiction associates with the reader's mind because it justifies and gives a reason to connect with The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. Thus, this book deserves to be a significant part of the canon because it deepens the realistic illusion that stories come from other stories, it is identical in many ways to the monomyth cycle (by Joseph Campbell), and finally it reminds the reader of the need of belonging and love. This book employs the idea that stories come from other stories in that it draws the same parallels between each other. The Neverending Story by Michael Ende shows this concept by settings examples throughout the novel. "Didn't you know that Fantastica is the land of stories? A story can be new and yet tell about olden times. The past comes into existence with the story." (Ende ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. A Sound Of Thunder Literary Devices The future, what does It hold? What does it look like? Ray Douglas Bradbury, is a self taught American author, who described many of these types of ideas in countless of his short stories. Bradbury is very descriptive when it comes to describing a setting as shown in "A Sound Of Thunder", "The Veldt", and "The Pedestrian". Bradbury uses imagery in "A Sound Of Thunder" he describes the T–Rex in a way that is quite terrifying " He is a terrible warrior. Each thigh a ton of meat, ivory, and steel mesh" ("A Sound Of Thunder" 77). This creates an image in the readers mind by describing how big and scary this beast is to the human eye. Bradbury also uses imagery when he describes the setting of the story, when the characters time travel to the past in a jungle where they're astonished by how big this jungle is " The jungle was high and broad and the jungle was the entire world forever and forever"("A Sound Of Thunder" 75 & 76). Bradbury describes the jungle in a way where the reader can imagine a large "neverending" jungle. Bradbury also uses imagery when the character Eckles describes what it's like to go ... • 67. The Road: Still The Good Guys And The Bad Guys The Road Essay In The Road, motifs throughout the novel formulate into not one, but several messages. "Still the good guys" and the "Bad Guys" develop a raging war against what's right and wrong in this book. One message these two motifs perpetuate is that, there will always be evil in this world; but with evil, comes good. There always has to be a balance between the two. This 'balance' is the very essence of our world, and literature. Sometimes though, the balance can be slightly tipped in the favor of evil. I believe this book was leaning towards the favor of malevolence. My first claim for this essay is that despite the harshness and catastrophe of the world around them, the protagonists in the novel still stick to their 'old world' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though all around them is completely hopeless, they pursue on. I think "carrying the fire" is an allegory, or an allusion to the greek story of Prometheus. The Man believes his son carries the "fire" just as Prometheus did. The fire in the story is essentially the last dying flames of humanity. In this book, ash and the neverending grey represent death, and if that is death, then the "fire" is the hope that life will renew itself again in this world of ruin and decay. Also, with the same Prometheus concept, the Man passes down knowledge to the Boy about survival. Hopefully, later on the Boy will gradually pass that knowledge down to other survivors he meets in his travels. Lastly, the Boy acts as the fire to the Man himself. The Boy is the only reason why the Man continues on. And now, despite the Man himself being extinguished, the Boy will tread on through a world that is "barren, silent, godless."(Page 4). Reigniting the last dim flames of humanity to whomever he meets. When the boy asks if the fire is real, the father says, "It's inside you. It was always there. I can see it" (page 234) This quote holds a lot of significance to the entirety of the message, and the book ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Literary Analysis Of A Worn Path By Eudora Welty "A Worn Path" Literary Analysis "A Worn Path" is a short story written by Eudora Welty that describes the trail Phoenix Jackson, an elderly African American lady, takes in order to reach a certain town during a festive holiday. Due to the imagery and terminology used to describe Phoenix such as, "[...] an old Negro woman [...]" (Welty, 221), it can be assumed that the story takes place during Christmas time in the rural countryside of the southern US, and presumably around the 1940's. Nonetheless, Phoenix Jackson, the protagonist of this story, is guided through a mysterious path of natural dangers in an utmost forlorn disposition with a limited omniscient point of view. Furthermore, the third person narration with a limited omniscience that is exclusive to Phoenix herself tells about her experiences of the path and impressions she has upon strangers and people. Such was observed when the author denoted, "Finally, trembling all over, she stood free, and after a moment dared to stoop for her cane. 'Sun so high!' she cried, leaning back and looking, while the thick tears went over her eyes. 'The time getting all gone here" (Welty, 222) The way the author described Phoenix's actions, and how she, for the most part, spoke her thoughts out loud in a stream of consciousness form, allowed the reader to only be able to comprehend her impressions. Such descriptions and characterizations are not seen within other characters throughout the story. This settles the direct basis for a limited omniscient point of view because the reader, through the perspective of an eagle that observes Phoenix, is able to view life and the dangers along the way through her eyes and not through the perspectives of secondary characters such as the white hunter or nurse. In addition, another important literary aspect detected in Welty's work is voice. Voice, in this case, served the generous purpose of giving vitality to Phoenix's character. Such can be noted in her colloquial and casual form of language as seen in dialogue like, "who be you the ghost of? [...] My senses is gone. I too old. I the oldest people I ever know" (Welty, 223). Her informal language allows the reader to receive the impression that Phoenix is not from a wealthy and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Argumentative Essay: The Neverending Story Faded colors. Unclear voices. Pixelated faces. The qualities of a movie that I was so unfamiliar with in this technologically advanced century ended up being so comforting. I sat crisscross in front of the television, my eyes fixated upon the screen. Propped up on various pillows and blankets, I settled into my seat to watch The Neverending Story once again. The exact number is unknown, but I know I watched it enough to have specific scenes memorized. A childhood that seems so distant suddenly becomes close in measurements of one hundred thirty minutes. One hundred thirty minutes of a beautiful blend of animation and realism, a questioning of what happens when imagination meets reality. Each time I watched The Neverending Story I expected it to be better than the last, although when I was younger, my missions while watching the movie were different. How can a story be never ending? All of my books have a first page and a last page. Surely there must always be an ending! Even the fictional movies have endings. This movie will end at some point too. It has to. That was weird. Maybe this time around I will understand it more because I watched it once already. But I still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is titled The Neverending Story. As we sat quietly through the next few class sessions watching in awe, I was overcome with a newfound appreciation for the film.
