Dave Eggers Ted Lessons
A life well lived is like an intricate frosted sugar cookie; a simple, yet easily mistaken recipe, but
when done right results in layers and depth of flavor and wonderfulness. A life well lived means that
you had an adventurous, fulfilling, and worthwhile time on earth, with family and friends that
supported you and you have no regrets. A common regret most people have as they age is that they
"lost time," doing things they did not truly want to do. As a young person, I do not have much
experience, but I do know that at this time I would much rather be traveling and enjoying time with
family and friends over struggling in school and taking three tests a week. At the end of my life, I
want to be able to say that I had fun and that I travelled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the TED Talk by Dave Eggers, Eggers shares his story about opening a pirate–themed tutoring
organization for young students. He had a rough time in the beginning, but he never gave up, and
eventually the tutoring organization at 826 Valencia became a well–known and resource for young
kids. Through Eggers' individuality and innovation of this themed tutoring center, students have
improved their writing and editing skills. Even though Eggers had a rough time in the beginning, he
never gave up on his idea to help students find their passion in their school work. Similarly, Jobs
gives meaningful advice about how his life was shaped and that how his "dots" fell into place, like
going to college and finding his passion for calligraphy, and putting his passion to work on a new,
innovative company. Jobs said it best when he explained the concept of "connecting the dots," and
that you must trust your gut when those dots begin to connect. Both Jobs and Eggers had a pretty
rough time in their companies and they actually failed, but instead of dwelling on failure, they made
something great out of it, and they have become even more successful. By not looking back on
failure and letting it defeat them, they put it in the past and pushed forward. Another great point that
Jobs added in his speech was to stay hungry; what he meant by this is that you must look for new
things to do and try to go outside of your comfort zone – this relates to Leon Stokesbury's poem,
"Unsent Message to My Brother in His Pain," in that Stoskebury's advice was to not give up and
find a better purpose of life. Eggers, Jobs, and Stokesbury had similar ideas of not giving up just
because life is getting hard – fight through those hard times and come out on top. Pushing through
the rough patches will only make you stronger, and in the long run, make you

The Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
The child called "it" by Dave Pelzer. The time and place the book took place was March 5, 1973, in
Daly City, California. Dave Pelzer was a boy who was abused by his own mother. He was the boy
who was called "It" in his family house. His Mother would make him eat and drink things that you
couldn't even imagine a mother would do. She treated her son as her slave. David wasn't allowed to
shower or even wear clean clothes. His mother wouldn't feed him until the third day. David would
always go to school with bruises and scratches. His father, on the other hand, would try to do
something but he failed each time he tries to convince David's mother to change her mind.
In the story, The Child Called "It" has many themes but the theme that stood throughout the story
was; no matter how bad things get and no matter how bad you just what it to stop. Always push
yourself and never let the person that hurt you bring you down. For example, in the story, david said,
that he pushed himself because he couldn't let his mother win even though he wanted to just die
someday because of all the torture and hell his mother put him through. He didn't let that stop from

Essay On A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
Title: A Child Called It
Author: Dave Pelzer
Text type: Extended text
In the novel "A Child Called It" Dave has struggled greatly with the abuse of his mother who has
been tormenting him for years. When Dave was younger there were always signs of his mother's
manic behavior but David was too young to understand these actions. At the age of four David's
mother becomes very abusive and singles him out from his brothers; playing brutal and
unpredictable games, games that would leave him so weak, he was physically and mentally tortured.
His world is full of starvation and torture unknowing what his emotionally unstable, alcoholic
mother is planning to do next. His school picks up on the signs and eventually calls the police and

She soon stops calling him by his name and refers to him as "The boy" this distances her self from
him and severs any motherly feelings she had left for Dave. "You are a nobody! An It! You are
nonexistent! You are a bastard child! I hate you and I wish you were dead!" By calling him "an it" as
if he is sub–human making it easier to inflict inhuman punishment such as forcing him to drink
ammonia, stabbing him in the stomach, burning his arm on a gas stove, and forcing him to eat his
own vomit. These are things a mother could never imagine doing to her child, which why it is
evident that his mother no longer saw him as her son, and only something she could torcher and
blame for the things that she herself had done wrong in her life. Because she no longer called him by
his name she is able to treat him dreadfully and not be unsettled by her conscience. She took away
her sons childhood because she believed that he was not worthy of living a normal human life, she
took humanity away from him and made him feel like he was the evil and deserve this

Dave Pelzer A Child Called It Summary
In Dave Pelzer's A Child Called "It", the author writes about his own abilities to persevere through
his mother's hideous abuse. He uses his willpower, imagination, courage, and faith in God to retain
his motivation to survive in situations many people could not. David suffered unthinkable abuse
whilst in the care of his mother. Many people could not imagine going through the ordeals he had to
suffer through. For example, as punishment, she refused to allow David to eat. David had to get
creative if he wanted food. He began stealing food from his classmates' lunch boxes at school. Once
he was busted for that, he mustered up the courage to run to the nearby grocery store during school
recess to steal food, knowing that he would be in great

Research Paper Dave Matthews
There are many phenomenal musicians in the world, but very few as diverse and cultured as Dave
Matthews. Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1967. Matthews and his family
then moved two years later to Westchester County, New York, where his dad went to work for IBM.
Then, in the early `70s, Matthews and his family moved to Cambridge, England, before returning to
New York. It was in Cambridge where Matthews' dad died in 1977 from Hodgkin's disease. After his
father's death, the family moved back to South Africa in 1980. It was here that Matthews went to a
few different schools and learned more about the evils of government, there and in general.

Matthews was to find the best musicians around and surround him with them.
The Dave Matthews Band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, in early 1991, when Matthews
decided to put some songs he had written on tape. Instead of simply recording himself with a guitar,
he instead decided to bring in some instrumental help to give his musical ideas more depth. His first
move was finding the right people to play the parts in his band that he decided fit. He began his
search and formed the racially integrated band that is now known worldwide and are continuously
ranked in the top five for the largest grossing concert tours of the year. The key roles were soon
filled by phenomenal musicians in the area. Dave found assistance in drummer Carter Beauford and
saxophonist LeRoi Moore who were both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville
music scene. Based on the recommendation of distinguished local jazz guru John D'earth, 16–year–
old musical prodigy Stefan Lessard came on board to play bass. Completing the band was keyboard
player Peter Griesar, who left the band after a couple of years, as well as the talented and classically
trained violinist, Boyd Tinsley The band was finally formed, and they played their first official

Analysis Of The Book ' Zeitoun ' By Dave Eggers
I am currently a Junior at Mills High School that is enrolled in the AP Language and Composition
class. For our summer assignment, we were assigned to read Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, which
recounts the true story of a Muslim–American man named Abdulrahman Zeitoun who remained in
New Orleans during 2005's deadly Hurricane Katrina. While trapped in the city, Zeitoun paddles in
his canoe in the flooded streets coming to the aid of those who are in danger; however, Zeitoun is
arrested under accusations of being affiliated with an Al–Qaeda Terrorist Cell. Throughout the
novel, Zeitoun is portrayed as a gentle and compassionate person who puts his own life on the line

`` The Circle `` By Dave Eggers
Transparency is key in The Circle. Without it, no one can even attempt to know everything. To be
transparent, one must allow others to see everything, to know everything. The Circle makes sure its
employees know this to be fact, and it ensures that it is implemented. The Circle puts up a front that
transparency equates to freedom, when in reality it is the opposite. The programs endorsed by the
Circle are incredibly restricting and promote total openness, going so far as to say that "secrets are
lies" and "privacy is theft" (Eggers 305). Dave Eggers's The Circle shows that complete
transparency in all aspects of life is dangerous because with it people lose basic human rights such
as privacy and freedom to be themselves.
Mae's best friend, Annie, gets her a job at one of the most prestigious companies in the world, the
Circle. In her beginnings at the company, Mae focuses on her work but soon learns that another,
almost more important, aspect of the job is keeping up with social media, which prompts her to pay
more attention and rise to a very high achieving number in the PartiRank. At a company party, a
mysterious new man appears named Kalden, a man who complicates Mae's life at the Circle and her
relationship with Annie, who thinks he might be a spy. As Mae continues to rise in station at her CE
job, her work–home balance becomes increasingly complicated, resulting in a huge fight with her

Introduction
The history of Jazz dates back to early 20th century in the regions within and around New Orleans
where African Americans are believed to have pioneered its development. This paper focus on the
jazz song Take Five by Dave Brubeck. The song which was released in 1959 for the album Time
Out, was recorded by Dave Brubek and written by Paul Desmond. The song was produced in New
York by the 30th Street Studio, division of the Columbia Records label, a famous record label of the
time. the song is 5 minutes 29 seconds long (original version) but several cover versions with
slightly varying lengths are available. It also uses different instruments at different stages but these
are discussed in subsequent sections.
Why Take Five?
The choice of this song is by far motivated by its melody. Melody in this context is the linear
succession of tones which the music listener is able to perceive as ... Show more content on

While jazz is an independent type of music especially in contemporary entertainment, there seems to
be consensus that jazz has developed as a result of it being able to bring together and transform the
influence from other types of music. The historical perspective holds that jazz reminds the black
Americans the oppressions and societal restrictions that have been long placed upon them on
grounds of race (racial discrimination) . Recent scientific studies have an even more interesting
perspective. Scientists hold that consistent listening to jazz can actually improve attention spans by
altering the patterns with which the brain releases neural waves . Listened through a workout, jazz
can decrease fatigue and provide motivation especially if the beats per minute are made to match the
heart beat

Analysis Of A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
A Child Called "It," by Dave Pelzer, has been one of my favorite books for as long as I can
remember. The title, alone, drew me in. Who is "It?" What kind of name is "It?" The only way to
discover the answers to my questions, was to read and find out. "It" is a boy named David, who
suffers from abuse by his mother, and neglect from his father. David has two brothers that never
receive the abuse that he does; in fact, they even join in on the abuse, occasionally. However, David
was not always treated that way. He and his "two brothers...were blessed with the perfect parents.
[Their] every whim was fulfilled with love and care" (Pelzer 17). Slowly, David's father was gone
more than he was home, and his mother became an alcoholic. When David's mother ... Show more

I thought it was silly to feel shameful and embarrassed when I had no control over what was
happening to me, but that's how I felt. I thought that I deserved it. I thought that it was all of my
fault, like maybe I was asking for it, somehow. "At the core of my soul, I hated myself more than
anybody or anything. I came to believe that everything happened to me or around me was my own
fault because I had let it go on for so long" (Pelzer 136). Pelzer made me feel like I had a right to
feel that way, even if it was absurd. Those feelings, though, can make you go into a scary place.
"Even in its darkest passages, the heart is unconquerable. It is important that the body survives, but
it is more meaningful that the human spirit prevails" (Pelzer 164). Dave taught me that while, yes, it
is normal to feel at fault, that you cannot continue to feel that way or your lively spirit will diminish.
A person's spirit is what makes them who they are. Pelzer's words was one of many things that

Book Report On A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
The book "A Child Called It" by Dave Pelzer is about a boy who is abused by his family, but mainly
his mother. The Omaha Press Publishing Company published this book in 1993. In the history of
California's this story is one of the most serious cases of child abuse. Dave the author of this book
wrote this book about himself and the struggles he encountered because of his abusive mother. Right
now doesn't always define your future. In this story David Pelzer was viciously beaten by his
alcoholic mother. She often would play "games" with him. Often times these games were torturous,
and unpredictable. At times the so–called games his mother played would almost leave him dead.
David had to learn how to play his mothers games in order to survive.

The Destruction of Dignity
Acclaimed writer , Dave Eggers, in his riveting novel Zeitoun retells the story of a New Orleans
painter as he finds himself in the city following Hurricane Katrina. Throughout his harrowing
journey throughout the aftermath, Eggers exhibits the horrifying results a disaster can have on the
dignity of victims. There are countless examples throughout the novel of those who have been
dispossessed of their dignity and humanity, and there is no better example than that of Zeitoun
himself. Egger's portrayal of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina demonstrates the devastating effect
a disaster has on the dignity of individuals and how it can strip the ... Show more content on

It defied belief." (Eggers, 101) The disregard of Zeitoun's pleas by those on the boats forms almost
an exact parallel of the parable of the Samaritan in the Bible and highlights the lack of humanity
shown by the soldiers on the boat. The parable describes the story of an injured man beaten by
robbers on the side of the road. Two men, a priest and a levite, pass down the road and avoid him,
while a third man, a Samaritan helps the man recover. The priest and the levite both had a moral
obligation and were duty–bound to assist the injured man, yet chose not to, and this is the exact
situation the soldiers and police officers in the boat were in. They too had a moral obligation and
were duty–bound to help assist the residents of New Orleans following the hurricane. Eggers also
emphasizes their position of authority by appealing to logos, as he describes their boats as, "a
military model, loud, with a great fan anchored perpendicularly to the rear. It was headed directly
towards them." (Eggers 100–101). By describing the crafts as something specific to the military,
Eggers indirectly points out their duty to help the people due to their possession of vehicles capable
of saving many lives. Unfortunately, despite having both the means and the duty to assist Zeitoun,
all of the military personnel choose to ignore Zeitoun, This utter neglect of their duty indicates their
decline in humanity as they choose to ignore someone who could've potentially been

Analysis Of A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
A Child Called "It," by Dave Pelzer, is Pelzer's autobiographical depiction of the years of abuse he
endured by his alcoholic mother. The abuse continued for many horrible years until Pelzer was
finally saved by teachers at his school at the age of 12 on March 5, 1973. While reading this skin
crawling story one question arises, where was Pelzer's father during this abuse? To answer this
question we must first look into the book. In chapter 4 (the fight for food) Dave says that his father
was his only hope and already we can see what his father means to him. He sees father as a glimmer
of hope and his savior. However later on in the story Dave's perspective changes. For example, on
page 47 Dave says, "Father stood lifeless as mother fed me another dose of ammonia." This shows
how his father changed because of his mother. At first, he was Dave's escape from his mom's twisted
reality but then he became a nothing, because he was tired of getting into arguments with Catherine.

evenings, after the dinner dishes were cleared from the table, Father would wash them, and I would

really wanted to help Dave at first. He would stay by his son's side and tried to guard him, but that
doesn't last for long because the mother becomes more and more violent as he tries to help

His mother basically used him and abused him for her own amusement. She treated him as if he was
her personal slave boy. She made him do all of the work around the house and even some work that
made no sense for him to be doing. She made him do some really unnecessary task. She did not
allow for Dave to speak or be around anyone but her and the time he spent with her mainly
consisted on her torturing him. His mother did not always allow him to eat but when she did he was
only allowed to eat the scrapes from the trash as he cleaned. Dave had no one to turn to. Even his
father who tried helping him in the beginning gave up fighting the mother. Dave was truly alone and
the abuse was simply excused by Dave's mom as punishment for him for being such a bad kid.
Dave's father once tried to safe him and remove him from the clutches of his mother but this only
made the abuse worse. She moved Dave out to the garage where he was made to sleep and she took
away all his possible means of getting food. The only place she could not control his food was at
school because of this Dave began stealing food from his classmates' lunch boxes. When he was
caught his mom was outraged about having to meet with the school and this only fueled her
outrageous abuse towards him. Dave's mom continued losing her mind. The more she slipped out of
reality the worse the torture became for Dave. One of her torture tactics was to fill a spoon with
bleach, and force the toxic chemical down Dave's throat making him ingest it. I feel she enjoyed
seeing him fall unconscious and in pain. No matter what he would do he could not escape the hell
his mom had made for him. She made sure that these abusive attacks were only done within the

The book "A Child Called It" is an emotional roller coaster type of book and stomach twisting
subjects appear throughout the chapters. It is an amazing book to read I would recommend it for
teens and young adults that have good emotional stability, because it is very intense but yet eye

place in Daly City, California in 1973. Throughout story the setting switches up from the mother's
house and school. Dave Pelzer didn't really get to do anything so it was pretty plain. The protagonist

away from the pain. This is what kept this little boy alive. He had something to reach for and never

house. All of a sudden his mother and father started drinking and had problems in their relationship.

He always thought his father was going to save him and take him away. As time passed by, he saw
that things were just getting worse between his mother and him and his father wouldn't do nothing
about it. He lost hope and didn't care about anything. But he started to dream at night that one day
he would get out of the hell hole he was living in. He realized that if he wanted to survive he would
have to be strong and beat his mother at her torturing games. He just kept thinking to himself one
day I will get out of here. He started building a self–esteem. He started realizing what was
happening wasn't his fault and one day decided to tell someone at school. The conflict of the story
was Dave's mother. She was cruel and unloving. She would drink and abuse Dave. For some reasons
she never beat any of her other kids. Every time he stood up to her she would tell him he was a
nobody or an "it". She did cruel things for no reason. For example one time she tried putting him on
the stove to burn him. Other times she would make a gas out of ammonia and Clorox in the
bathroom and lock him in there for hours. The climax of the story is when people at school start
noticing cuts and bruises on David. When a social worker is sent to his house, his mother starts
treating him with love and pretends she's sorry. Dave believes it and doesn't say anything when the
social worker comes. Dave thinks his dreams have come true and is very happy not knowing when

Essay On Dave Grohl
January 14, 1969, a boy was born David Eric Grohl in Warren, Ohio. His parents were a journalist
and English teacher, they got divorced when he was six years old. His interest in music came early,
and later on after a lot of bands, his career blasted off, he only played in three big bands. He is a
devoted husband and father, and has a very successful career. I've always wondered about his whole
life, I don't know about you though, but I know about it now and figured I'd share it with you now.
Dave Grohl's childhood was rougher than it should've been, his interest in music came early, and he
wasn't very successful with school. His beginning with Nirvana was good, he had a successful and
decently timed run with them, and he didn't have as long a while with Nirvana as ... Show more

Even though he didn't talk to Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, and even though he had the chance
to, he still got to audition for Nirvana's new drummer, through the lead singer of the band that was
friends with Nirvana. Also when he auditioned for them, both Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain
knew that he would be perfect for their band as a drummer. According to the book "Come as You
Are: The Story of Nirvana" by Michael Azerrad, Krist Novoselic said "He was a hard hitter... So
bright, so hot, so vital." Also, Dave Grohl actually lived with Kurt Cobain when he first started in
the band. Grohl had a successful and decently timed run with Nirvana, because huge labels were
interested in Nirvana, offering contracts with huge advances. After awhile they finally signed with
Geffen Records, and their first release with Geffen was
Nevermind in 1991, turned into a huge hit. Although it was driven into two by the single "Smells

A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
The book A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer is a memoir of his abusive childhood. Dave in the story
called David was the second child out of 3 to his mother and father. Pelzer starts the book of that
moment when he was rescued from the abusive household he lived in. The rest of the book starts
from his earliest memories of when his family was happy. They would go on vacations, eat well
together, and enjoyed each other's presence. Out of nowhere his mother started changing. She would
drink more often and physically abuse David. The abuse is described to have gotten worse and
worse as time went on. The mother made David into "the family slave" often calling him a bad boy
for no reason. She would often not feed him and when she did feed him she

Alan Moore And Dave Gibbons
Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen illustrates the lives of retired superheroes in the 1980s.
The Keene Act outlawed the "masquerading" of superheroes in the 1970s and led to the dissolution
of many superheroes. The murder of an old colleague, The Comedian, forces them to come out of
retirement and sets the events of the graphic novel into place. Moore and Gibbons sets up a world of
superheroes in the midst of a very real historical period of the Cold War. We usually think of
superheroes as existing in a fictional place, with an altered history. However, the novel references
President Nixon, the Cold War, Vietnam, and other real events and figures. These references help to
establish the superheroes as people existing in reality. Here, ... Show more content on

Richard Nixon is running for another term. Superheroes have influenced how the time period will
turn out because of they are the ones who change the events in history, both for and against us. The
presence of Dr. Manhattan makes it easier for the United States government to accomplish their
military goals, for example. In real life, a weapon that the United States or any country, for that
matter, this powerful would have been used to death. It would have meant the end of our problems
as well as the solution to any future problems or discussions. The inclusion of superheroes means
we must discuss the option of having too much power and having an extraterrestrial presence among
the human species. The presence of the superheroes and their eventual retirement/exile arise from
this feeling of "otherness". Dr. Manhattan is feared for his appearance and his powers, and
eventually drives him to exile. Rorschach incites fear into those who know of him and his history.
Superheroes change the dynamic of the society. The novel is also based on the current events going

the novel to hold "a dark mirror to its time" (Rehak 156). When director Zack Snyder decided to

A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
For this book report I pick the book "A Child Called "It"", from the reading list. This book caught
my eye because I have always been interested in child abuse, and this book was just about that from
the child's side. This book had many sad moment throughout it, and probably helped open people's
eyes to child abuse and what it truly does to a child. The author of the book Dave Pelzer is the main
character of this true story. This book started out by letting the reader know that he did eventually
get out of the house where his mother was. This book also has a part in it where the reader can read
it and hear what his teacher, nurse, and principle in his school thought and how they helped save this
boy's life. When reading this book I questioned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those reasons can make sense just to that person or everyone. I believe the mother in this book felt
like she had to mistreat Pelzer for certain reasons. As for the reader we will never know why she felt
like doing this we can only just assume. The other mental illness that I think she may have is
borderline personality disorder. The book says, "Borderline personality disorder, a personality
disorder characterized by repeated instability in interpersonal relationship, self–image, and mood
and by impulsive behavior" (Comer pg. 535). I think she has this mental illness because her mood is
always different and she switches around a ton through this book. She will be nice and be a mother
to Pelzer and then within minutes she could be kicking him or trying to beat him. You do not get
much on the mother in this book other then she beats Pelzer and how she treats him different then
his brothers. So I think that the mom has a lot of serious issues but without hearing her side or even
just to talk to her for a few minutes I will never understand the reason. I just feel like these two fit
her the most from my knowledge of mental illness and what I read from the book. I truly think that
it might be beneficial to hear he story before I start putting labels on

It's not often that I come across a book that has the power to educate and inspire. I feel that A Child
Called "It" by Dave Pelzer, will be one of those books for me. Chapter 1 is titled The Rescue. It
starts off with Dave washing the dishes and trying to deal with his mother who continues to hit him.
It explains the abusive situation that Dave is in. Dave at one point says he rather be hit than have his
food taken away from him. The mother, who is hungover, than drives him and his brother to school.
Once at school Dave is examined by the nurse who sees all the bruises and cuts all over his body.

this chapter it recalls the good times for Dave and his family. There was a time when Dave was
happy and more importantly he was loved and nurtured. They lived in a nice home where his father
was a firemen and his mother would take care of the family. In the chapter it reveals that his mother
loved her children and that she was a very determined and caring woman. She would go out of her
way to make her children happy. At the end of the chapter Dave mentions that he had never felt as
safe and warm than he did at that very moment. Throughout chapter 1 there are countless examples
of both physical and mental abuse inflicted on Dave. Right off when the chapter starts Dave is
smacked while doing dishes. Dave states "Smack! Mother hits me in the face, and I topple to the
floor" (Pelzer, 1995, pg. 3). There are also signs of mental abuse; I saw many signs where the
mother would play mental games with Dave to

The Horrendous Suffering Faced by Dave Pelzer
American author, Dave Pelzer, grew up in San Francisco with his mother, father, and brothers.
Dave's mother was not like a normal mother, Dave's mother, Catherine Pelzer, beat and neglected
Dave. Dave also had 4 brothers that lived with him and his parents: Richard, Ron, Stephen, and
Kevin. Dave's father lived with them, but was rarely home. While Catharine did not neglect Dave's
brothers she did not deserve custody of Dave's brothers, because of her abusive ways towards Dave
(Pelzer).
Dave's mother, Catharine Pelzer, was the mother of Dave and his brothers and the wife to Stephen.
Catharine was an alcoholic, who was also mentally unstable, and who by no means was in the
position to care for children. Catharine neglected Dave to an extreme extent; many of the things she
did to Dave could have easily killed him (Pelzer). Dave was no longer considered a child he was a
slave, a child called it. Dave's brothers Richard, Ron, Stephen, and Kevin lived with the family, but
they were not treated the same way as Dave was treated. The brothers were treated as any other kid
should be treated, they would be able to eat with the family, play outside, watch television, or do
things other children would do. While their brother, Dave, was not allowed to do any of these things.
As Dave's brothers watched the abuse, they did nothing to stop it (Pelzer). Dave's father, Stephen,
was a firefighter and an alcoholic. In the beginning Dave's father was home all the time, but as time

The Negative Effects Of Technology In Dave Eggers's The...
Imagine a world where everyone's enigmatic thoughts were exposed to the public. Today, in the vast
cyberspace, anonymity leads to audacious actions of cruel words posted by rather introverted
individuals who would not dare to speak those words in a face–to–face encounter. Furthermore, they
refuse to be held accountable for their actions and interfere with peace by creating chaos. The
phrases "secrets are lies", "sharing is caring" and "privacy is theft" (CITE?) are explicated in Dave
Eggers, The Circle. Mae Holland follows these three mantras, justified by leaders of the Circle, to
make life–changing decisions. A world extracted of anonymity and instead, policed by an
omniscient public is one cause to the negative effects of technology on one's private life. In The
Circle, programs are developed in the Circle to implicate improved and advanced living conditions
through the use of technology. Ironically, these programs such as "Past Perfect", "ChildTrack",
"SoulSearch" and "SeeChange" introduce immoral issues. The plot of The Circle by Dave Eggers
portrays the negative aspects of technology on private lives shown through character experiences in
the novel and raises unethical issues about the programs created in the Circle, which correspond to
the influence technology has in the real world. Mae Holland started her job at the Circle, known to

them it will be okay. Dave Pelzer wants the abused to know that they can be helped, it is not

Good Ideas In The Circle By Dave Eggers
Have you ever had that creepy feeling that someone is watching you, but when you look around no

Analysis Of The Book ' Watchmen ' By Dave Gibbons
Watchmen written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons utilizes the literary tool of
symbols to connect ideas and themes. Time is a major theme throughout the comic and plays a
significant part in the structure and outcome of the story. This theme is successfully coupled to the
theme of destiny by the use of the clock and other symbols that are present throughout the comic.
Symbols such as clocks, the smiley pin, and the graffiti are utilized to efficiently connect the themes
of time, justice and the loss of innocence and morality throughout Watchmen. The combination of
all of these themes ultimately allude to Ozymandias' decision to unleash chaos on Manhattan by
foreshadowing his betrayal and explaining how impossible it is to entrench the peace that he has
manufactured by unleashing this chaos. The clocks in Watchmen are used to foreshadow crucial
future events and connect the themes of morality and time. Other than the literal connection between
calling themselves Watchmen and recurring images of actual watches, doomsday clocks and time in
general plays a huge part in the arc of the comic's storyline. This is because of the impending
destruction that the world is to face at the hands of Ozymandias. Doctor Manhattan's father was a
watchmaker before learning that time is irrelevant and therefore useless. Jon himself finds this out
through his own experience with time and seeing back and forth through it. This is particularly
important because the whole reason he

The main idea of this book is to show everyone what child abuse and what living in different foster
homes is like because most of the time people don't usually talk about this topic due to sensitivity
and this book helped everyone realize in a subtle way. I learned that this story isn't just imagined,
but it does indeed happen in real life. Children do live in households where the mother or father or
whoever treats them unfair and that is what opened up my eyes. One of the parts in the book that I
enjoyed the most is towards the end of the book for the reason that earlier in the story, when David
first ran away from home he saw a road sign that lead to a lake where him and his family would visit
in the past and right then and there he said he was going to live there when he grew up and in the
end, his desire came true and he lived in a cabin he made himself by the lake with his son, Stephen.
One of my favorite quotes of this story would be on page 303 which says, "Years ago, I truly
doubted whether I'd make it out alive. In my former life I had very little. Today, as I stand in my
utopia, I have what any person could wish for– a life and the love of my son. Stephen and I are a
family." The reason I like this quote is because all his life, David was looking for a family and love
and he finally found it.
In conclusion, I would most definitely recommend this book because it's very vulnerable and
emotional. Right from the beginning it may

Summary Of A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
Author Dave Pelzer was born on December 29th 1960 and was the second of five boys. He grew up
in California where he suffered extreme abuse and mistreatment from his mother as a child for about
8 years and that's what he wrote his books about. At age 18 he joined the U.S. Air Force and served
in the Gulf War. Dave is now an american nonfiction writer for several autobiographical and self–

Daly City, California had a wonderful family who was very loving and caring up until he was four
years old. He doesn't know what happened but everything changed. His mother started beating him.
Some of the first things she did to him was punch him nonstop or throw him against the mirror in
the bathroom and bang his head so hard against it you could see imprints of his face on the glass and
blood marks and that was just the beginning. Soon she started not to let him eat, he would wake up
in the morning with no breakfast most of the time unless his brothers and some scraps for him
otherwise he would get lunch which was a peanut butter sandwich and a couple of carrots and no
dinner every day. He wore the same clothes for years straight and they haven't been washed ever so
he was humiliated and bullied all the time at school.

as a righteous hero that suffered great injustices due to the racial profiling and islamophobia.

Dave Pelzer 's Life And Life Essay
Introduction
Dave Pelzer's life started out as many children's lives do. He was surrounded by a mother and father
who loved him and would do anything for him. He recalls himself as well as his two brothers being
blessed with perfect parents who filled the family with love and care (Pelzer, 1995). His father,
Stephen, supported the family and worked as a fireman in San Francisco, while his mother,
Catherine, was a woman who glowed with love for her children and family (Pelzer, 1995). In the
summer, the family would go on a vacation often times to Portola or Memorial Park, where they
would camp in a large tent for a week. One time, they even went to Johnson's Beach, where the
adventures were endless. In this time, Dave learned how to swim on his back and his mother was so
proud of him for it. Every day was sprinkled with magic, especially as Dave's mother came and gave
him a hug from behind. In this time, he had never felt as safe and as warm as he had at that moment,
not knowing that things were soon to change in the most drastic way (Pelzer, 1995). Catherine went
from a loving mother to a nightmare while Stephen went from a protective father, to a coward. Dave
became the subject of child abuse, which had an impact on his childhood development explained by
three well known theorists, Bronfenbrenner, Piaget, and Kohlberg.

Zeitoun, By Dave Eggers
In the novel, Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, the main character, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, is an immigrant of
Syria who stays in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and is arrested due to the suspicion of
looting, but really is arrested because of his race and how he looks. Zeitoun's faith and loyalty to his
community and home is tested through the many obstacles of Hurricane Katrina and including his
religion, racism, and his very own dignity. The author, Dave Eggers who is also the speaker in
novel, proves all examples of Zeitoun's challenges credibly in the text.
Quote 1: "Zeitoun 's grandmother had stayed put during countless storms in her home on Arwad
Island, and he planned to do the same. A home was worth fighting for." (Eggers, 70)
Eggers shows in this quote how Zeitoun refuses to leave his home of New Orleans with his family.
Eggers portrays that even though a house may seem replaceable, Zeitoun still chooses to not leave
his home like his family who did not leave their home land of Arwad Island. The author also shows
the symbolism of Zeitoun's refusal to leave is like his assimilation coming to America. The
symbolism of Zeitoun's refusal to leave also shows how dedicated he is to his new country of
America and refuses to give up when faced with discrimination. Eggers proves that Zeitoun
continues fighting for his home in the United States.

Dave Eggers Ted Lessons

  • 1. Dave Eggers Ted Lessons A life well lived is like an intricate frosted sugar cookie; a simple, yet easily mistaken recipe, but when done right results in layers and depth of flavor and wonderfulness. A life well lived means that you had an adventurous, fulfilling, and worthwhile time on earth, with family and friends that supported you and you have no regrets. A common regret most people have as they age is that they "lost time," doing things they did not truly want to do. As a young person, I do not have much experience, but I do know that at this time I would much rather be traveling and enjoying time with family and friends over struggling in school and taking three tests a week. At the end of my life, I want to be able to say that I had fun and that I travelled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the TED Talk by Dave Eggers, Eggers shares his story about opening a pirate–themed tutoring organization for young students. He had a rough time in the beginning, but he never gave up, and eventually the tutoring organization at 826 Valencia became a well–known and resource for young kids. Through Eggers' individuality and innovation of this themed tutoring center, students have improved their writing and editing skills. Even though Eggers had a rough time in the beginning, he never gave up on his idea to help students find their passion in their school work. Similarly, Jobs gives meaningful advice about how his life was shaped and that how his "dots" fell into place, like going to college and finding his passion for calligraphy, and putting his passion to work on a new, innovative company. Jobs said it best when he explained the concept of "connecting the dots," and that you must trust your gut when those dots begin to connect. Both Jobs and Eggers had a pretty rough time in their companies and they actually failed, but instead of dwelling on failure, they made something great out of it, and they have become even more successful. By not looking back on failure and letting it defeat them, they put it in the past and pushed forward. Another great point that Jobs added in his speech was to stay hungry; what he meant by this is that you must look for new things to do and try to go outside of your comfort zone – this relates to Leon Stokesbury's poem, "Unsent Message to My Brother in His Pain," in that Stoskebury's advice was to not give up and find a better purpose of life. Eggers, Jobs, and Stokesbury had similar ideas of not giving up just because life is getting hard – fight through those hard times and come out on top. Pushing through the rough patches will only make you stronger, and in the long run, make you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Child Called It By Dave Pelzer The child called "it" by Dave Pelzer. The time and place the book took place was March 5, 1973, in Daly City, California. Dave Pelzer was a boy who was abused by his own mother. He was the boy who was called "It" in his family house. His Mother would make him eat and drink things that you couldn't even imagine a mother would do. She treated her son as her slave. David wasn't allowed to shower or even wear clean clothes. His mother wouldn't feed him until the third day. David would always go to school with bruises and scratches. His father, on the other hand, would try to do something but he failed each time he tries to convince David's mother to change her mind. In the story, The Child Called "It" has many themes but the theme that stood throughout the story was; no matter how bad things get and no matter how bad you just what it to stop. Always push yourself and never let the person that hurt you bring you down. For example, in the story, david said, that he pushed himself because he couldn't let his mother win even though he wanted to just die someday because of all the torture and hell his mother put him through. He didn't let that stop from keep going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a blurry object fly from her hand. • 5. Essay On A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer Title: A Child Called It Author: Dave Pelzer Text type: Extended text In the novel "A Child Called It" Dave has struggled greatly with the abuse of his mother who has been tormenting him for years. When Dave was younger there were always signs of his mother's manic behavior but David was too young to understand these actions. At the age of four David's mother becomes very abusive and singles him out from his brothers; playing brutal and unpredictable games, games that would leave him so weak, he was physically and mentally tortured. His world is full of starvation and torture unknowing what his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother is planning to do next. His school picks up on the signs and eventually calls the police and David is put into foster care and is never to return to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She soon stops calling him by his name and refers to him as "The boy" this distances her self from him and severs any motherly feelings she had left for Dave. "You are a nobody! An It! You are nonexistent! You are a bastard child! I hate you and I wish you were dead!" By calling him "an it" as if he is sub–human making it easier to inflict inhuman punishment such as forcing him to drink ammonia, stabbing him in the stomach, burning his arm on a gas stove, and forcing him to eat his own vomit. These are things a mother could never imagine doing to her child, which why it is evident that his mother no longer saw him as her son, and only something she could torcher and blame for the things that she herself had done wrong in her life. Because she no longer called him by his name she is able to treat him dreadfully and not be unsettled by her conscience. She took away her sons childhood because she believed that he was not worthy of living a normal human life, she took humanity away from him and made him feel like he was the evil and deserve this ... David suffered unthinkable abuse whilst in the care of his mother. Many people could not imagine going through the ordeals he had to suffer through. For example, as punishment, she refused to allow David to eat. David had to get creative if he wanted food. He began stealing food from his classmates' lunch boxes at school. • 11. Research Paper Dave Matthews There are many phenomenal musicians in the world, but very few as diverse and cultured as Dave Matthews. Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1967. Matthews and his family then moved two years later to Westchester County, New York, where his dad went to work for IBM. Then, in the early `70s, Matthews and his family moved to Cambridge, England, before returning to New York. It was in Cambridge where Matthews' dad died in 1977 from Hodgkin's disease. After his father's death, the family moved back to South Africa in 1980. It was here that Matthews went to a few different schools and learned more about the evils of government, there and in general. Possibly the most favorable move of Matthews' fans was in 1986 when he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So maybe (his travels) just gave me a wider pool of listening" (dmband.com). The only option for Matthews was to find the best musicians around and surround him with them. The Dave Matthews Band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, in early 1991, when Matthews decided to put some songs he had written on tape. Instead of simply recording himself with a guitar, he instead decided to bring in some instrumental help to give his musical ideas more depth. His first move was finding the right people to play the parts in his band that he decided fit. He began his search and formed the racially integrated band that is now known worldwide and are continuously ranked in the top five for the largest grossing concert tours of the year. The key roles were soon filled by phenomenal musicians in the area. Dave found assistance in drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore who were both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville music scene. Based on the recommendation of distinguished local jazz guru John D'earth, 16–year– old musical prodigy Stefan Lessard came on board to play bass. Completing the band was keyboard player Peter Griesar, who left the band after a couple of years, as well as the talented and classically trained violinist, Boyd Tinsley The band was finally formed, and they played their first official ... • 13. Analysis Of The Book ' Zeitoun ' By Dave Eggers I am currently a Junior at Mills High School that is enrolled in the AP Language and Composition class. For our summer assignment, we were assigned to read Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, which recounts the true story of a Muslim–American man named Abdulrahman Zeitoun who remained in New Orleans during 2005's deadly Hurricane Katrina. While trapped in the city, Zeitoun paddles in his canoe in the flooded streets coming to the aid of those who are in danger; however, Zeitoun is arrested under accusations of being affiliated with an Al–Qaeda Terrorist Cell. Throughout the novel, Zeitoun is portrayed as a gentle and compassionate person who puts his own life on the line to save others; defying the harsh stereotypes that surround Muslims following 9/11. While Zeitoun certainly redefines the views of the reader and portrays a real struggle for Muslims in our nation today, would you still appreciate this story's message and meaning if I informed you that the real Zeitoun was a man known for committing domestic violence to his wife? Mr. Zeitoun does indeed abuse his wife and has been under trial several times and was convicted for domestic violence and later faced allegations of hiring attacks on his wife, Kathy. The controversy divided my class into two distinct advocates, some of my classmates encourage Zeitoun to be remain in the AP Language and Composition curriculum. While others, including myself, agree that by reading, studying, and writing about Zeitoun we glorify a man who abuses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. `` The Circle `` By Dave Eggers Transparency is key in The Circle. Without it, no one can even attempt to know everything. To be transparent, one must allow others to see everything, to know everything. The Circle makes sure its employees know this to be fact, and it ensures that it is implemented. The Circle puts up a front that transparency equates to freedom, when in reality it is the opposite. The programs endorsed by the Circle are incredibly restricting and promote total openness, going so far as to say that "secrets are lies" and "privacy is theft" (Eggers 305). Dave Eggers's The Circle shows that complete transparency in all aspects of life is dangerous because with it people lose basic human rights such as privacy and freedom to be themselves. Mae's best friend, Annie, gets her a job at one of the most prestigious companies in the world, the Circle. In her beginnings at the company, Mae focuses on her work but soon learns that another, almost more important, aspect of the job is keeping up with social media, which prompts her to pay more attention and rise to a very high achieving number in the PartiRank. At a company party, a mysterious new man appears named Kalden, a man who complicates Mae's life at the Circle and her relationship with Annie, who thinks he might be a spy. As Mae continues to rise in station at her CE job, her work–home balance becomes increasingly complicated, resulting in a huge fight with her family and Mae breaking the law. In response, Mae goes transparent, and enforces ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While jazz is an independent type of music especially in contemporary entertainment, there seems to be consensus that jazz has developed as a result of it being able to bring together and transform the influence from other types of music. The historical perspective holds that jazz reminds the black Americans the oppressions and societal restrictions that have been long placed upon them on grounds of race (racial discrimination) . Recent scientific studies have an even more interesting perspective. Scientists hold that consistent listening to jazz can actually improve attention spans by altering the patterns with which the brain releases neural waves . • 19. Analysis Of A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer A Child Called "It," by Dave Pelzer, has been one of my favorite books for as long as I can remember. The title, alone, drew me in. Who is "It?" What kind of name is "It?" The only way to discover the answers to my questions, was to read and find out. "It" is a boy named David, who suffers from abuse by his mother, and neglect from his father. David has two brothers that never receive the abuse that he does; in fact, they even join in on the abuse, occasionally. However, David was not always treated that way. He and his "two brothers...were blessed with the perfect parents. [Their] every whim was fulfilled with love and care" (Pelzer 17). Slowly, David's father was gone more than he was home, and his mother became an alcoholic. When David's mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I thought it was silly to feel shameful and embarrassed when I had no control over what was happening to me, but that's how I felt. I thought that I deserved it. I thought that it was all of my fault, like maybe I was asking for it, somehow. "At the core of my soul, I hated myself more than anybody or anything. I came to believe that everything happened to me or around me was my own fault because I had let it go on for so long" (Pelzer 136). Pelzer made me feel like I had a right to feel that way, even if it was absurd. Those feelings, though, can make you go into a scary place. "Even in its darkest passages, the heart is unconquerable. It is important that the body survives, but it is more meaningful that the human spirit prevails" (Pelzer 164). • 23. The Destruction Of Dignity By Dave Eggers Jordan Wong Mr. Dwyer AP English Language Period 5 31 August 2017 The Destruction of Dignity Acclaimed writer , Dave Eggers, in his riveting novel Zeitoun retells the story of a New Orleans painter as he finds himself in the city following Hurricane Katrina. Throughout his harrowing journey throughout the aftermath, Eggers exhibits the horrifying results a disaster can have on the dignity of victims. There are countless examples throughout the novel of those who have been dispossessed of their dignity and humanity, and there is no better example than that of Zeitoun himself. Egger's portrayal of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina demonstrates the devastating effect a disaster has on the dignity of individuals and how it can strip the ... (Eggers, 101) The disregard of Zeitoun's pleas by those on the boats forms almost an exact parallel of the parable of the Samaritan in the Bible and highlights the lack of humanity shown by the soldiers on the boat. The parable describes the story of an injured man beaten by robbers on the side of the road. Two men, a priest and a levite, pass down the road and avoid him, while a third man, a Samaritan helps the man recover. The priest and the levite both had a moral obligation and were duty–bound to assist the injured man, yet chose not to, and this is the exact situation the soldiers and police officers in the boat were in. They too had a moral obligation and were duty–bound to help assist the residents of New Orleans following the hurricane. Eggers also emphasizes their position of authority by appealing to logos, as he describes their boats as, "a military model, loud, with a great fan anchored perpendicularly to the rear. It was headed directly towards them." (Eggers 100–101). By describing the crafts as something specific to the military, Eggers indirectly points out their duty to help the people due to their possession of vehicles capable of saving many lives. Unfortunately, despite having both the means and the duty to assist Zeitoun, all of the military personnel choose to ignore Zeitoun, This utter neglect of their duty indicates their decline in humanity as they choose to ignore someone who could've potentially been ... • 25. Analysis Of A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer A Child Called "It," by Dave Pelzer, is Pelzer's autobiographical depiction of the years of abuse he endured by his alcoholic mother. The abuse continued for many horrible years until Pelzer was finally saved by teachers at his school at the age of 12 on March 5, 1973. While reading this skin crawling story one question arises, where was Pelzer's father during this abuse? To answer this question we must first look into the book. In chapter 4 (the fight for food) Dave says that his father was his only hope and already we can see what his father means to him. He sees father as a glimmer of hope and his savior. However later on in the story Dave's perspective changes. For example, on page 47 Dave says, "Father stood lifeless as mother fed me another dose of ammonia." This shows how his father changed because of his mother. At first, he was Dave's escape from his mom's twisted reality but then he became a nothing, because he was tired of getting into arguments with Catherine. We can clearly see that his father was home while Dave was being abused. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the evenings, after the dinner dishes were cleared from the table, Father would wash them, and I would dry. I knew that as long as I stayed by his side, no harm would come to me." He would stay by his son's side and tried to guard him, but that doesn't last for long because the mother becomes more and more violent as he tries to help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She made him do all of the work around the house and even some work that made no sense for him to be doing. She made him do some really unnecessary task. She did not allow for Dave to speak or be around anyone but her and the time he spent with her mainly consisted on her torturing him. His mother did not always allow him to eat but when she did he was only allowed to eat the scrapes from the trash as he cleaned. Dave had no one to turn to. Even his father who tried helping him in the beginning gave up fighting the mother. Dave was truly alone and the abuse was simply excused by Dave's mom as punishment for him for being such a bad kid. Dave's father once tried to safe him and remove him from the clutches of his mother but this only made the abuse worse. She moved Dave out to the garage where he was made to sleep and she took away all his possible means of getting food. The only place she could not control his food was at school because of this Dave began stealing food from his classmates' lunch boxes. When he was caught his mom was outraged about having to meet with the school and this only fueled her outrageous abuse towards him. Dave's mom continued losing her mind. The more she slipped out of reality the worse the torture became for Dave. One of her torture tactics was to fill a spoon with bleach, and force the toxic chemical down Dave's throat making him ingest it. I feel she enjoyed seeing him fall unconscious and in pain. It is an amazing book to read I would recommend it for teens and young adults that have good emotional stability, because it is very intense but yet eye opening. For our summer assignment, we were assigned to read Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, which recounts the story of a Muslim–American man named Abdulrahman Zeitoun who remained in New Orleans during 2005's deadly Hurricane Katrina. While trapped in the city, Zeitoun paddles in his canoe in the flooded streets aiding those who are in danger; however, Zeitoun is suddenly arrested under accusations of being affiliated with an Al–Qaeda Terrorist Cell. Throughout the novel, Zeitoun is portrayed as a gentle and compassionate man who puts his own life on the line to save others. Through Zeitoun's actions he defies the harsh stereotypes that surround Muslim– Americans following 9/11. While Zeitoun certainly redefines the views of the reader on Muslim– Americans and portrays a real struggle for Muslims in our America today; would you still appreciate this story's message and meaning if I informed you that the real Abdulrahman Zeitoun was a man known for committing domestic violence to his wife? Mr. Zeitoun has indeed abused his wife and has been under trial several times and was convicted of domestic violence and later faced allegations of hiring attacks on his wife, Kathy. The book says, "Borderline personality disorder, a personality disorder characterized by repeated instability in interpersonal relationship, self–image, and mood and by impulsive behavior" (Comer pg. 535). I think she has this mental illness because her mood is always different and she switches around a ton through this book. She will be nice and be a mother to Pelzer and then within minutes she could be kicking him or trying to beat him. You do not get much on the mother in this book other then she beats Pelzer and how she treats him different then his brothers. • 59. Analysis Of The Book ' Watchmen ' By Dave Gibbons Watchmen written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons utilizes the literary tool of symbols to connect ideas and themes. Time is a major theme throughout the comic and plays a significant part in the structure and outcome of the story. This theme is successfully coupled to the theme of destiny by the use of the clock and other symbols that are present throughout the comic. Symbols such as clocks, the smiley pin, and the graffiti are utilized to efficiently connect the themes of time, justice and the loss of innocence and morality throughout Watchmen. The combination of all of these themes ultimately allude to Ozymandias' decision to unleash chaos on Manhattan by foreshadowing his betrayal and explaining how impossible it is to entrench the peace that he has manufactured by unleashing this chaos. The clocks in Watchmen are used to foreshadow crucial future events and connect the themes of morality and time. Other than the literal connection between calling themselves Watchmen and recurring images of actual watches, doomsday clocks and time in general plays a huge part in the arc of the comic's storyline. This is because of the impending destruction that the world is to face at the hands of Ozymandias. Doctor Manhattan's father was a watchmaker before learning that time is irrelevant and therefore useless. Jon himself finds this out through his own experience with time and seeing back and forth through it. This is particularly important because the whole reason he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer I read the book A Child called "It". I loved this book it really spoke to me in a manner of taking my family life for granted and taking everything I have for the best because in all reality it could be worse. As Dave gets older his punishments became more cruel and dangerous. Sometimes Dave's mother and father would have afternoon happy hours and they would abuse him worse when they were drunk. In the novel, Zeitoun and his wife, Kathy Zeitoun, seem to have a stable and loving relationship, " But in recent years, the stable, loving relationship between Mr. Zeitoun and his wife, Kathy, that was described in the 2009 best seller has taken a series of dark turns. The couple divorced last year after he was convicted of assaulting her. And on Wednesday, the New Orleans police charged him with plotting to have Kathy Zeitoun, her son and another man murdered. " (Brown, Katrina Hero Facing Charges in New Orleans). When the phrase "has taken a series of dark turns " is used, it's usually to reveal that a situation took a turn for the worse, and if that's the case, Eggers should've let the readers know . Zeitoun and Kathy's relationship isn't what it used to be, it changed for the worst because Zeitoun isn't who he used to be, now he's violent and out of his mind. Also, Eggers is a journalist, and it's a journalist's job to keep the public updated on what is going on. To demonstrate, one of the rules of journalist is to " Gather, update and correct information throughout the life of a news story. "(Journalistic Ethics, Society for Professional Journalism). • 69. Analysis Of The Lost Boy By Dave Pelzer The Lost Boy, written by Dave Pelzer is a heartwarming story of a young nine–year–old boy, David, who has family issues and is constantly being abused by his mother. Dave Pelzer is a New York Times Bestseller and a #1 International Bestseller. He has written other books such as A Child Called "It", My Story, and A Man Named Dave, etc. This is my first story read by this author however, I will read more of his work in the near future. The genre of this book I would say is self– help, psychology and inspirational because it sends out such a strong statement of what this young boy and probably many other children are dealing with, in other words, it helps raise awareness. I myself did not imagine to be reading this type of book since I'm more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main idea of this book is to show everyone what child abuse and what living in different foster homes is like because most of the time people don't usually talk about this topic due to sensitivity and this book helped everyone realize in a subtle way. I learned that this story isn't just imagined, but it does indeed happen in real life. Children do live in households where the mother or father or whoever treats them unfair and that is what opened up my eyes. One of the parts in the book that I enjoyed the most is towards the end of the book for the reason that earlier in the story, when David first ran away from home he saw a road sign that lead to a lake where him and his family would visit in the past and right then and there he said he was going to live there when he grew up and in the end, his desire came true and he lived in a cabin he made himself by the lake with his son, Stephen. One of my favorite quotes of this story would be on page 303 which says, "Years ago, I truly doubted whether I'd make it out alive. In my former life I had very little. Today, as I stand in my utopia, I have what any person could wish for– a life and the love of my son. Stephen and I are a family." The reason I like this quote is because all his life, David was looking for a family and love and he finally found it. In conclusion, I would most definitely recommend this book because it's very vulnerable and emotional. Right from the beginning it may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Dave Pelzer 's Life And Life Essay Introduction Dave Pelzer's life started out as many children's lives do. He was surrounded by a mother and father who loved him and would do anything for him. He recalls himself as well as his two brothers being blessed with perfect parents who filled the family with love and care (Pelzer, 1995). His father, Stephen, supported the family and worked as a fireman in San Francisco, while his mother, Catherine, was a woman who glowed with love for her children and family (Pelzer, 1995). In the summer, the family would go on a vacation often times to Portola or Memorial Park, where they would camp in a large tent for a week. One time, they even went to Johnson's Beach, where the adventures were endless. In this time, Dave learned how to swim on his back and his mother was so proud of him for it. Every day was sprinkled with magic, especially as Dave's mother came and gave him a hug from behind. In this time, he had never felt as safe and as warm as he had at that moment, not knowing that things were soon to change in the most drastic way (Pelzer, 1995). Catherine went from a loving mother to a nightmare while Stephen went from a protective father, to a coward. Dave became the subject of child abuse, which had an impact on his childhood development explained by three well known theorists, Bronfenbrenner, Piaget, and Kohlberg. • 77. Zeitoun, By Dave Eggers In the novel, Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, the main character, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, is an immigrant of Syria who stays in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and is arrested due to the suspicion of looting, but really is arrested because of his race and how he looks. Zeitoun's faith and loyalty to his community and home is tested through the many obstacles of Hurricane Katrina and including his religion, racism, and his very own dignity. The author, Dave Eggers who is also the speaker in novel, proves all examples of Zeitoun's challenges credibly in the text. Quote 1: "Zeitoun 's grandmother had stayed put during countless storms in her home on Arwad Island, and he planned to do the same. A home was worth fighting for." (Eggers, 70) Eggers shows in this quote how Zeitoun refuses to leave his home of New Orleans with his family. Eggers portrays that even though a house may seem replaceable, Zeitoun still chooses to not leave his home like his family who did not leave their home land of Arwad Island. The author also shows the symbolism of Zeitoun's refusal to leave is like his assimilation coming to America. The symbolism of Zeitoun's refusal to leave also shows how dedicated he is to his new country of America and refuses to give up when faced with discrimination. Eggers proves that Zeitoun continues fighting for his home in the United States. Quote 2: "Look above you, at the stars and moon. How do the stars keep their place in the sky, how does the moon rotate around the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
