1.	Use Traditional Advertising Mediums
Have you ever received mail from Google?
I have and if you’re a business owner I’m sure
you have too. But, why on Earth would the
Internet giant send you a direct mail piece?
Because it works!
Many experts will tell you that traditional media is dead. Don’t worry
it’s not. It is however changing, and for many people change is scary.
The first thing you need to do is know your audience (I’ll discuss this again
a little later). Who are they? What do they do? Do they read certain magazines
or newspapers? How do they get around town? By knowing the answers to
these questions, you’ll be able to start planning your message and the media
that will compel your audience to you.

2.	Use the Right Music in Your Stores
Creating the right atmosphere in your store
or restaurant is vital to your success but
there’s more to it than you think.
Certain types of music can command a higher price. This can
also have the opposite effect if you desire. For example, if
your business model is based on high volume rather than high
margins and therefore turnover is more important, the music
should reflect that.
Choosing the right style of music can help you achieve the right
dynamic in your space and increase profits – choose wisely!

3.	Pick a Voice to Represent Your Company
Studies have shown that proper voice fit can increase
advertising message recall. By increasing the message
recall you can either reduce your ad spending or bask
in the pools of money you’ll be creating.
The reason this happens is because the voice of your company is a
compelling reason for people to remember you. You’ll hear it on the radio,
in TV ads and on your phone systems, but if you use different people in
each place you’ll gain nothing. Some companies such as Audi go as far
as auditioning voice actors for individual voice mail messages.
The main criterion for selecting a voice is to pick a voice that is congruent
with your target audience. So, if you’re looking to target a young male
audience then the voice of the company should be a young male. When
choosing a voice you’ll also want to think about your brand characteristics.
A fun and quirky brand will want a different voice then, say, a bank.

4.	Move to the Beat
For the first 9 months of our lives all of us have
been learning to be a drummer through our
mother’s heartbeats. This has made us really
good at detecting steady beats and changes in
tempo. For businesses this can be powerful stuff.
For instance, people tend to move at the speed at which music or
speech is being played. This means we can influence people’s behaviours
by changing the tempo at which music or speech is being played.
For restaurants you can impact table turnovers through the use
of music tempo. As a manufacturer you can increase worker productivity.
Or as a service business you can change wait time perceptions.
All of this leads to improvements in your bottom line, which will allow
you to allocate newly found resources into other critical areas of your
business or put it right back into additional marketing.

Many companies use “Sally” from marketing to
do their phone message recording. I like “Sally”,
but this is a mistake. A professional voice actor
will make your business sound more professional
and it will command attention.

Once you have the attention of your audience it’s much easier
to communicate with them. This opens up an opportunity to sell
or inform waiting customers and prospects. In fact, 20% of callers
will purchase something because of what they heard on the phone.
Just remember rule #3 – choose the right voice. You’ll be able to leap
frog many other businesses that don’t understand the power of sound.

6.	Know Your Target
This one goes without saying but you can’t
expect to grow your business if you don’t
know whom your target audience is. This
is particularly true in selecting music to
represent your company.
Congruency plays a role in how much your target audience
will be influenced by the music you are playing. However,
if you do the opposite of what people expect it will trigger
their fight or flight mechanisms = not good for sales!
One thing to note, as we grow older we tend to like softer music.
In many retail environments this can be used as a deterrent to keep
certain demographics out of stores. Some municipalities have also used
this practice as a way to keep loitering to a minimum in troubled areas.

7.	Own It!
Now that you’ve spent all this time finding the right
music and voices for your business it’s important that
your start building an identity using your new sound.
Doing this is all about consistency and making sure
you remain different than everyone else.
To ensure you remain different you need to own the music and sounds
you produce. Yes, you’ll need to make an investment, but that’s the point
– we’re building an audio brand!
You may also want to consider trademarking your sound. In Canada you can
do this for your audio logo and other signature sounds. Other parts of the globe
will have different rules so we suggest talking with your legal counsel.

Bottom line, take care of your sound and it will take care of you.

But, why on Earth would the Internet giant send you a direct mail piece? Because it works! Many experts will tell you that traditional media is dead. Don’t worry it’s not. It is however changing, and for many people change is scary. The first thing you need to do is know your audience (I’ll discuss this again a little later). Who are they? What do they do? Do they read certain magazines or newspapers? How do they get around town? Certain types of music can command a higher price. This can also have the opposite effect if you desire. For example, if your business model is based on high volume rather than high margins and therefore turnover is more important, the music should reflect that. By increasing the message recall you can either reduce your ad spending or bask in the pools of money you’ll be creating. Some companies such as Audi go as far as auditioning voice actors for individual voice mail messages. The main criterion for selecting a voice is to pick a voice that is congruent with your target audience. So, if you’re looking to target a young male audience then the voice of the company should be a young male. When choosing a voice you’ll also want to think about your brand characteristics. A fun and quirky brand will want a different voice then, say, a bank. For instance, people tend to move at the speed at which music or speech is being played. This means we can influence people’s behaviours by changing the tempo at which music or speech is being played. For restaurants you can impact table turnovers through the use of music tempo. As a manufacturer you can increase worker productivity. Or as a service business you can change wait time perceptions. All of this leads to improvements in your bottom line, which will allow you to allocate newly found resources into other critical areas of your business or put it right back into additional marketing. This is particularly true in selecting music to represent your company. Congruency plays a role in how much your target audience will be influenced by the music you are playing. However, if you do the opposite of what people expect it will trigger their fight or flight mechanisms = not good for sales! One thing to note, as we grow older we tend to like softer music. In many retail environments this can be used as a deterrent to keep certain demographics out of stores. Doing this is all about consistency and making sure you remain different than everyone else. To ensure you remain different you need to own the music and sounds you produce.
