Essay On Black Friday
Long lines, crowds of people, a million sale signs, standing in below zero weather, and a bright
brand–name store feeding materials to consumers is the Black Friday Tradition. No better way to
give thanks by taking all the money in our pockets and showering it over companies. After
devouring a massive meal with lots of turkey, fighting others over items and being uncivilized
citizens is what follows. But why is it so many Americans indulge in this tradition? Besides the
"cheap" prices on products, could it be the extensive advertisement drawing us? Or is there a more
psychological explanation? In the article "Shopping on Black Friday Makes You Feel Like a Well–
Loved Warrior" by Brain Handwerk, there's an overview study behind the appeal and ... Show more

"Shopping on Black Friday Makes you feel Like a Well– Loved Warrior" provides a handful of
logical evidence to demonstrate the increased consumer participation growth on Black Friday.
"Black Friday is ballooning–the ritualistic shopping frenzy on the day after thanksgiving is now just
one part of a $50– billion weekend of commercial excess that includes Small Business Saturdays
and Cyber Monday." (n.p). As the American society keeps joining in on the holiday sales, Handwerk
creates a point of the competitiveness between companies that do anything to draw in more money.
Not only is there challenges growing among businesses, but within people too, "a survey by the
National Retail Federation, about 26 percent of 18– to 24–year–olds plan to shop on the holiday
itself." (n.p). People of this age are catching on to the trend faster than others and find themselves
building bonds when they share a common goal. Black Friday is the outlet and excuse for families to
gather and buy each other gifts for Christmas. It's the thrill of the buy, and the method to engage
with close ones to accomplish their goal, "on this year's Black Friday, the National Retail Federation
estimates that more that 95 million Americans will rise with the sun and race through crowded stores
competing for the bargains." (n.p.). Handwerk includes reliable sources for this research such as

Persuasive Essay About Black Friday
I normally participate in the Black Friday festivities myself so, going out and just asking questions
was a normal part of it. It started about 6 years ago when I went out Black Friday shopping with two
of my best friends. The three of us went to Best Buy with the intention of our friend Hansford
getting this surround sound speaker for $200 that was regularly $300 I believe. It was my first time
ever going as well as theirs too I believe. We were a year out of High School and all had jobs so
once Hansford suggested it Jagger and I agreed to go out with him. We ended up leaving
Thanksgiving dinner at about 8 and getting to Best Buy shortly after because the store opened at 12
a.m. that night. We sat out in the cold talked and joked for about 4 hours to only get in the store and
Hansford decide he did not want the speaker anymore. Since that year I have been out for Black
Friday even though two of the years I worked at Champs Sports for them. Now Black Friday is not
even Black Friday its more so Black Thanksgiving Shopping. This year I decided to spend
Thanksgiving in Ohio with my in–laws where I did not really know the area or what to expect. My
plans this year was to leave the dinner at about 3 and get to Best Buy for this 49 inch TV that was
$180 but, when I got to Best Buy there was already well over 100 people waiting in the line because
the doors opened at 5 p.m. So, I decided to go across the street to a target where a 55 inch TV was
on sale for $250. When I arrived a

Examples Of Evil In Black Friday
Walmart is an example of a significant event that was the result of evil. The members who work at
Walmart seem to make it like a friendly place and nothing will go wrong, yet the most unique people
with awkward traits decide to go there, making it chaotic. Moreover, when Black Friday occurs,
there is violence occurring all over the stores just to get what these shoppers desire, causing an
abundant amount of severe injuries as a result of the chaotic state of mind. Specifically, people are
fighting each other just to get a TV or an Xbox causing unorganization within the store causing evil.
Similarly, in Lord of the Flies, chaos occurs for the same reason, those people want what they desire

Black Friday Persuasive Essay
Over the past few years, Black Friday sales across the nation have started earlier and earlier. These
sales can potentially cut into what is more important: Thanksgiving. Black Friday sales started as
early as 6pm in 2015. Will these sales start earlier next year? What about in a few years? This
shopping frenzy is slowly replacing Thanksgiving traditions. All together, companies should be
required to start at or later than 12am. Let Thanksgiving have its own day to celebrate with families
and friends. Black Friday sales that start later have more benefits for both retailers and shoppers.

Working long, hard shifts to help customers buy clothes and gifts is the opposite of what
Thanksgiving should be about. Thanksgiving should be a holiday to celebrate with friends and
family. People should relax and remember what they are thankful for. With sale times starting as
early as 6pm, workers don't receive the Thanksgiving time they need. Connie Miller, a worker at
Kohl's, told reporters about her insane working schedule over Black Friday. She didn't get home til
1am on Thanksgiving morning. She got a few sleeping hours in until she had to wake up early to
cook a Thanksgiving meal for 15 people, who were arriving at noon. She left the celebration early to

Black Friday Commercial Essay
After an eventful day of celebrating Thanksgiving with beloved family and friends, millions of
Americans head out at a late hour to snag the cheapest deals of the year. The "American holiday,"
Black Friday, draws approximately 164 million Americans to trendy stores all across America (CBS
News). The chaotic crowds begin their night–long shopping excursion in the late evening of
Thanksgiving, leaving family and friends behind to hunt for the latest trends. One of the big brand
names which utilizes Black Friday to draw in customers is Macy's. Macy's, a reputable clothing
store, produced a Black Friday commercial, "Screamers" in the Fall of 2011. "Screamers," starring
the famous pop singer, Justin Bieber was designed to attract Black Friday shoppers to their high–end
store. The commercial was aired to convince specific viewers that Macy's is a friendly, reputable,
and informative company. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The advertisement makes the viewers feel comfortable, providing a good laugh for the audience.
The audience feels the vibe of the holiday spirit, as Bieber's famous holiday jingle, Under The
Mistletoe, plays in the background of the scene. Strong, masculine men hysterically scream as
Bieber approaches Macy's to shop. The men's sporadic screams are replaced with teenage girl
screams, in order to make viewers laugh. Switching the screams not only makes the viewers chuckle
but implies that everyone loves the iconic pop singer, Bieber, even masculine men. To play into
sales and persuade the audience's emotions, Macy's informs the viewers at the end of the
commercial that for every $65 Justin Bieber fragrance gift set sold, Macy's would willingly donate
$2 to the Make–A–Wish. Using the donation to Make–A–Wish grasps the viewer's emotional side to
show the support that Macy's is giving to the less fortunate. Macy's plays into the emotions of

Impact Of Black Friday
Impact of Black Friday on Society
We already know that the "Black Friday" is an American tradition that consists of a drop in prices in
major stores, during the last Friday of November, coinciding with the opening of Christmas
shopping. But what is the origin of this celebration?
The first use of the term "Black Friday" occurred not to refer to Christmas shopping, but in relation
to an economic crisis: on Friday, September 24, 1869, two relentless Wall Street financiers, Jay
Gould and Jim Fisk, After an intense work to obtain great benefits, they failed in their efforts, and
the market went bankrupt. For that reason, that day was named as the "Black Friday".
Another of the stories that accompany the term "Black Friday" has to do with the role of small
businesses in the market. Tradition has it that, after a whole year of losses, finally, after
Thanksgiving, the Christmas season arrived, the day from which the benefits began, and with them,
instead of red numbers, "black numbers" were produced.
The tradition is indeed a positive practice for the economy of a country, simultaneously, gives the
possibility to millions of hard workers to recover their lost through the year, and to bring back their
numbers. Also it gives the opportunity to small business to create more profits through advertising
their products.
Perhaps it is opposite to peoples believes and morals about what Christmas should be about, the

Purpose Statement: To try to persuade this audience to boycott Black Friday.
Thesis statement: Black Friday has turned a family holiday shopping tradition into a bizarre
corporate greed competition that has resulted in unnecessary violence, and is now taking over a
nationally recognized holiday.
Introduction
Attention Getter: Black Friday! The BEST deal! Or, is it really worth it? More importantly, why
should we boycott it?
Overview of Main Points: Today I'm going to talk about Black Friday. I'm going to give a brief
history of the term, what it is today, why we should boycott, and offer some alternatives to holiday
shopping.
(Let's begin with some history)
I. I found several sources stating how the term "Black Friday" began. Some of the first dates I came
across were to describe giant stock market crashes. The term started being used later by the
Philadelphia Police Department the day after Thanksgiving.
A. The first "Black Friday" on record was on September 24, 1869.
1. According to an article on PBS.org, and Investopedia.com, this day was deemed Black Friday
after the crash of the gold market in the United States.
2. The scandal of that day started to coin the term "black" to describe other horrible days in financial
markets where stocks have plummeted.
B. In the early 1960s the Philadelphia police department started calling the day after Thanksgiving,
Black Friday to describe the horrible traffic conditions downtown.

Good Friday and Lent
All About Lent
Q: What is Lent?
A:Historically, Lent is the forty day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, it began on Ash
Wednesday and ended on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter Sunday). In recent years, this has
been modified so that it now ends with evening Mass on Holy Thursday, to prepare the way for
Triduum.
Q: Why are Sundays excluded from the reckoning of the forty days?
A: Because Sunday is the day on which Christ arose, making it an inappropriate day to fast and
mourn our sins. On Sunday we must celebrate Christ's resurrection for our salvation. It is Friday on
which we commemorate his death for our sins. The Sundays of the year are days of celebration and
the Fridays of the year are days of penance.
Q: Why are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the rest of the year Catholics in this country are permitted to use a different act of penance
on Friday in place of abstinence, though all Fridays are days of penance on which we are required to
do something expressing sorrow for our sins, just as Sundays are holy days on which we are
required to worship and celebrate God's great gift of salvation.
Q: Why are acts of repentance appropriate at this time of year?
A: Because it is the time leading up to the commemoration of Our Lord's death for our sins and the
commemoration of his resurrection for our salvation. It is thus especially appropriate to mourn the
sins for which he died. Human have an innate psychological need to mourn tragedies, and our sins
are tragedies of the greatest sort. Due to our fallen nature humans also have a need to have set times
in which to engage in behavior (which is why we have Sundays as a set time to rest and worship,
since we would otherwise be likely to forget to devote sufficient time to rest and worship), it is
appropriate to have set times of repentance. Lent is one of those set times.
Q: What are appropriate activities for ordinary days during Lent?
A: Giving up something we enjoy for Lent, doing of physical or spiritual acts of mercy for others,
prayer, fasting, abstinence, going to confession, and other acts expressing repentance in general.
Q: Is the custom of giving up something for Lent mandatory?
A: No. However, it is a salutary custom, and

Black and Blue Friday Essay examples
The Friday after Thanksgiving is everything from a bargain hunter's dream come true to a husband's
worst nightmare. Since the early to mid–sixties it was been given the name "Black Friday." Black
Friday is day where stores around the country open their doors early to welcome the start of the
Christmas shopping season. This is the day if you get to the mall by five a.m., you are late and will
not find a parking place. It is the same day where you start off by being cussed by a pregnant
woman, and end by being beat–up by an elderly lady resembling your grandmother. Much is to be
said for the day, and for those whom brave mess.
The name "Black Friday" comes from Philadelphia in the mid 1960's. It was given two meanings.

When deciding to take your chances on this sociocultural phenomenon, keep in mind the three basic
rules. One, lines are faster than crowds. Two, make sure to grab a coffee or your favorite energy
drink, for you're in for a long day. Three, the early bird gets the worm. Sadly, the Starbucks did not
open until four–thirty, leaving me without caffeine for an hour and a half prior to their opening.
The average Black Friday shopper is surrounded by a melting pot of fellow shoppers. The variety of
people is significantly differential. From shopping freaks to their bored husbands, and mean old
ladies to passed out children, along with everything in–between can be found on the horrific
morning. While sitting on an uncomfortable plastic–like couch, I started to depict these people's
personalities, to elaborate on their interactions.
The Single Lady's Club: The first of these personalities is the bargain shopper. The bargain shopper
is usually accompanied by other bargain shoppers; they run in packs. Generally these shoppers are
women, because the largest day for men's shopping is on Christmas Eve when they have run out of
time to procrastinate any longer. The common age group is mid–teens to early–thirties. These
shoppers commonly have no desired goal, and often are shopping for themselves. They are very
friendly people who seem to enjoy this day based on the social aspect of it all, rather than the money
they could be saving. It's not that

Negative Essay : The Darkness That Is Black Friday
The Darkness that is Black Friday
This year, the holiday shopping season's hottest toy is slated to be a Hatchimal. Mothers around
America will head to stores to purchase this hot commodity and, for just $48.00, will make their
child's Christmas one to remember. But, what most people don't realize is that many troubles will
begin to ensue as these sales begin. Although Black Friday allows people to purchase gifts they
otherwise couldn't afford as well as help companies prosper, Black Friday drags our society down
through violence and consumerism.
The term Black Friday was used in the 1950s by cops in Philadelphia to describe the "chaos" that
took place the following day of a special Thanksgiving(Pruitt 1). Shoppers and tourists from all
around would come to the city before the Army–Navy football game that takes place the Saturday
after Thanksgiving. The police officers in Philadelphia were given longer shifts to control the
overwhelmingly large numbers of people and traffic. Shoplifters and people of all sorts began to
take advantage of the big sales occurring Friday causing trouble for many police officers and
security guards all over the city.
Quickly, Black Friday began to catch on. This, however, eventually led to many shop owners
"unsuccessfully chang[ing] it to Big Friday to remove the negative connotations" (Pruitt 1). The idea
of Black Friday would then spread to the rest of the country quite a few years later. Instead, this time
it would be portrayed differently.

Personal Narrative: Black Friday Deals
Black Friday DealsCongratulations. You survived Black Friday! Are you one of those crazy people
who gets up at 4 in the morning to get a good deal? Or is this the day (or weekend) to purchase all
your Christmas gifts? Depending on what you may have been looking for, you may have been able
to snag a good deal.
Yet, isn't it sad the day after our country takes a day of rest (for most) to celebrate "Thanksgiving,"
we then stand in line to grab a good deal. Fights take place. Greed overtakes many. How do we go
from a state of "Thanksgiving" to a state of greed? One day we were thankful, and the next greedy!
Are we consumed with the item, or the deal?

Of course I was disappointed, but it wasn't a huge deal to me.
Luckily, a couple days later, Toys R Us had the Zune for $99 (The Black Friday deal)! It was
available in only brown. I bought 2! I sold one on Ebay and made a profit!
Obviously, this does not happen to everyone. I got lucky.
The Root Issue
Even if I did not obtain the Zune, would it be appropriate for me to start a fight? If your child started
fighting with another child over some deal or product, what would you do? Some kind of discipline
would be in order, right? Yet, so many adults act like animals during this one day (or weekend).
Why is this the case?
James tells us this happens first and foremost because we are sinners and our desires entice us which
then leads to sin (James 1:15). This explains why people act ridiculously. I doubt anyone reading
this ever acts crazy like those on Black Friday, right (Kidding!)? Remember, Jesus died for your
sins. You are forgiven. Because of the work of Jesus, you are not condemned (Romans 8:1)! Even if
you do not rise up early on Black Friday, please pray for those who participated in Black Friday and
for those whose desires got the best of them during this time.

The market also takes advantage on this holiday, even though the income from each product is a
little bit less than the regular price, they tend to sell many products more than the regular business

season. Black Friday is also good for advertising products. There were quite a few stores in the mall
that were handing samples to try their product. The point of sale assessment depends on the
consumer's perceived shopping motives. Shopping motivation represents a fairly mature reach of
research. Many retailers consider smart shopping comprises high sensitivity on process. Smart
shoppers are always keen on getting a discount. Shopping on Black Friday is the consumer's
motivation. It gives them the excitement of the game. (look for competitive) Its part of the mystique,
shoppers can celebrate their ability to get the best deals. Most people go into the store with the
attention for buying for others for Christmas, but instead of holiday gift giving, most consumers buy
for personal or family use. Most people shop in groups with their families and friends since
everyone is home for the holidays. The more people you have with you, the better your chances are

Analysis Of Black Friday : Consumerism Minus Civilization
Black Friday shopping is a controversial issue in the United States; while many believe the day after
Thanksgiving is a part of holiday festivities, others view it as destructive. Throughout "Black
Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization," Andrew Leonard argues that the chaos of Black Friday,
the day after Thanksgiving in which crowds of Americans shop all night for extremely low prices,
lessens the sophistication of Americans and the true meaning of the holidays. People become so
consumed in the idea of endless sale prices that they forget to embrace what they already have, such
as family, food, and shelter. He believes that Black Friday shopping has become out of control and
describes the negative effects of excessive consumerism. he explains how most consumers act
completely insane while Black Friday shopping and how society encourages this behavior by
creating commercials and advertisements. Furthermore, Leonard states that it hurts the economy and
damages one's mental health. While Leonard is probably wrong when he claims that Black Friday
shopping is completely troublesome to America's well–being, he is right that consumerism
overpowers the true significance of Thanksgiving.
In his argument, Leonard guessed that Black Friday shopping is degrading to America as a whole.
Throughout the article, he states that people should avoid large sprees of retail spending "For the
sake of the U.S. economy" (Leonard 165); he insists that voluntarily overbuying causes the country

Many Thanksgiving celebrations today are still centered around getting together with family and
friends and giving thanks. The term Black Friday was first used, according to US News Digital
Weekly, in 1869 in reference to a stock market crash on the day after Thanksgiving that year. US
News Digital Weekly says that it was again used in 1951 to describe the high number of workers
that skipped work that day. Eventually, employers started giving workers the day after Thanksgiving
as a vacation day. In turn, many of the workers used this day to start their shopping for the holiday
season, making the day after the Thanksgiving a day that many stores started making huge profits. If
a business has a profitable market, they are considered "in the black". This is likely what brought
about the modern meaning of the phrase Black Friday. However, it wasn't until 2004 that Black
Friday was officially considered the "biggest shopping day of the year...according to data from retail
analyst ShopperTrak," (Tozzi). Today, stores everywhere have Black Friday sales with almost
comically low prices on merchandise to entice potential customers and drive them away from
competing stores.
Recently, America's obsession with Black Friday has generated various opinions on the day itself, its
proximity to Thanksgiving, and the morality of the holiday shopping season. Many view
Thanksgiving as a sacred holiday and are appalled that retailers would even consider the idea of

Informative Essay: Black Friday
Black Friday, the first Friday following the Thanksgiving Day, is celebrated as the world's largest
shopping festival. It marks the beginning of the shopping season for the coming festivities of
Christmas and New Year. It is a colossal shopping festival invented by the Americans offering
lucrative discounts and substantial savings on buying electronic gadgets, households, clothing,
accessories, gifts and much more. Though it not declared as a holiday officially yet many of the
American states observe it as an off work and spend quality time with family and friends to do their
Christmas and winter shopping.
The actual history about the origin of the day is not very clear, yet bunches of interesting stories are

Black Friday Ethical Issues
Thanksgiving is celebrated the third Thursday in the month of November. The following day is
called Black Friday, during this event stores and companies dramatically reduce the price of their
items. The consumer that is brave enough to face crowds and long lines might save enough money
on purchases to make getting up early worth it. The gun industry and accessories broke record sales
during this last Black Friday event (Smith, 2017). Alien Gear is one of the newest companies to
emerge in the conceal carry holster industry. In following pages the Alien Gear background will be
discussed, explore the market strategy, examine social and ethical issues, and describe the strategy
addressing these concerns.
Background
When it comes to concealed carry holster options in the past there were only a few companies out
there. In 2013, Thomas Tedder entered the conceal holster industry with his company Alien Gear
("About Alien Gear Holster", n.d.). Alien Gear first design was the Cloak Tuck and since then ...

Equally important, they can require the customer to input their conceal carry permit number into
their check out procedures. This step would require the company to check with the customer's state
before mailing out the holster. State officials with stricter conceal carry policies would encourage
this partnership because it could reduce the number of people illegally carrying a firearm. To
increase the chance of internationally sales Alien Gear can look at doing a direct investment in that
host country. The direct investment would have Alien Gear investing or owning in a foreign
subsidiary (Kerin et al., 2016). Alien Gear could also go the route of licensing by allowing a host
country to use their patient and make their product in that country. They would receive a portion of
the sales and it would save them on production and transportation

Fear Of Friday The 13th Paraskavedekatriphobia
Approximately every 212 days Friday the 13th occurs, while some may stay in bed all day to avoid
the bad luck, others will embrace it and joke about the superstitions. Friday the 13th has many
superstitions around the day. Some fear the day Friday, others may ear the number 13, while others
fear the combination of Friday and 13. Psychologists have named the fear of Friday the 13th
paraskavedekatriaphobia. Many have a fear of this day from myths, religious beliefs, and even
human research.
One origin of the superstition of Friday the 13th occur due to Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. In
his book on Friday 13, October 1307 hundreds of Knights Templar were arrested and burnt across
France. Knights Templar were a religious group of unmarried men who came together to protect
Christians during the Crusades. Christians then began showing thanks through giving them their
land and money which made the kings very wealthy. 1307 French King Phillip IV was running out
of money so he decided to go after the Templars money. He accused the men of heresy and arrested
them. A popular theory is that the Templars discovered the Holy Grail or a unorthodox religious
secret. Another popular theory is that Templars became the Freemasons.
A religious superstition of Friday the 13th is Catholic belief. Judas, an apostle that was said to betray
Jesus was the 13th guest at the Last Supper. Jesus Christ was crucified on a Friday. The combination
of 13 on a Friday causes Catholics to be very fearful

The Origin Of Black Friday : The History Of Black Friday
To better understand how Thanksgiving Day as well as the entire weekend are connected with
shopping, it is necessary to define the days as well as look into the history of the days that embody
the holiday weekend. "In the United States, Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday
on the fourth Thursday in November. On this day, people remember the first American thanksgiving,
when the first European settlers had been taught how to grow food by the Native Americans, and
they celebrated the successful harvest together" (Collins Dictionary). Thanksgiving Day in the
United States is also a day for feasting, football, and spending time with family and friends.
Black Friday has several stories of the phrase's origin, only one of these origin stories is actually
true. The most common story of the phrase Black Friday's origin is that for the majority of the year,
January through November, retailers traditionally operate at a financial loss and made a majority of
their profit for the year during the holiday season, starting at the day after Thanksgiving Day. When
recorded in financial statements, accounting practices used red ink to display negative amounts and
positive amounts with black ink. Thus, Black Friday is the beginning of the period when businesses,
mostly retail, would take in profits instead of losses for the year.
The earliest report of the "black in theory" was used in the November 28, 1981 edition of
Philadelphia Inquirer (Business

Black Friday. In the United States, the friday following Thanksgiving is one where every shop in the
country participates in stupendous sales, and the population forks over billions on this one occasion.
This displays incredible hypocrisy: exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have,
the masses trample each other and bring out their most violent side just for low priced prodicts. That
is the effect of consumerism. As upper middle class citizens, we are the 'perfect' consumers. And in
an ideal consumer fashion, 90% of what I own has no pragmatic use whatsoever; I bought it because
it 'looked nice' or because the enticing advertising hypnotized me into reaching out for the product,

we just don't care. In our capitalist society, 'the motive for producing goods and services is to sell

and get an extremely short lived pleasure when buying, whims that last only until the next 'IPhone'

Black Friday And Its Effect On America
Since the 1960s, consumers have been waking up during the early morning hours the day after
Thanksgiving to score the lowest prices of the year. Black Friday kicks off the Christmas shopping
season, with prices so low people get into physical fights in hopes of grabbing the last item. But has
Black Friday ran its course? Many analyst seem to think that Black Friday will have very little
importance in the upcoming years, and I would have to agree with them. Although I do believe that
the weekend after Thanksgiving will always be a little busier than any other weekend, I believe the
urgency consumers feel to wake up at 3 a.m. on Black Friday to snag the best deals will eventually
cease to exist.
One of the largest reasons I believe that Black Friday will lose its importance is that many stores are
now starting to open their doors on Thanksgiving evening. This year, many stores opened their doors
at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, offering the same deals that consumers could receive the following day,
Black Friday. In my own personal experience, I believe the stores were busier Thursday evening
than they were on Black Friday itself. Large box stores such as Wal–Mart and Target are hurting
their own Black Friday sales by making Black Friday less exclusive. In the consumer's mind, Black
Friday is a day when all stores are packed, checkout lines will be long, aisles crowded, so why not
going Thanksgiving evening when the store is open? This seems like a logical reason to go, since

The Causes Of Black Friday : It's Christmas
Black Friday would mark the day that

Theater Process Essay On Black Friday
For our theater project, my group and I decided to focus on showing how much our American
culture has become obsessed with obtaining materials, even to the point of hurting others without
giving one ounce of thought. In our world today, some people are very focused on getting the latest,
greatest object and what better day than Black Friday sums up how materialistic we, as Americans,
have become. My group wanted to choose something in our current world that was easy to joke
around with, without greatly offending others. We chose to have our story revolve around Black
Friday because of the upcoming holiday season and because of how absurd people can act when
trying to get the "best" deals. At the beginning of the process, we divided the tasks

Black Tuesday : Black Friday
Black Friday has multiple reasons for it being named "Black Friday". It traces back to the 1950's
when it was called "Black Friday" because of the surplus amounts of call–ins for employees trying
to score a four–day weekend after Thanksgiving. In Philadelphia during 1961, the Friday after
Thanksgiving was called Black Friday because it was the day when stores were coming out of the
"red", which was the downward shopping period between July and August. This was the biggest
time retailors saw the numbers, "in the red". The Friday after Thanksgiving marked when retailors
saw the profit go up, "in the black"; therefore, the term Black Friday arose. As Black Friday has
progressed along with retailors marketing their products and their sales, it has become a national day
of shopping to get the best deals. Americans mainly go shopping on this day to get huge deals for
Christmas presents. Stores have even taken this great opportunity to open their establishments for 24
hours. Just last year, consumers spent a whopping $57,400,000,000 with each consumer individually
spending $410 on average. The #1 retailor customers purchased from and camped out at was Best
Buy. All of the statistics are based on 2013 and this year was projected to be an 11% increase.
The main reason why so many people go Black Friday shopping is because of the amazing deals and
how much money you can save. In order to be a smart shopper, finding the best deals is key. There

Summary Of Black Friday : Consumerism Minus Civilization
Andrew Leonard's "Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization" argues that the Black Friday
shopping spree has begun to get out of hand in the previous years. Leonard explains that
consumerism is a great thing for America, but showing Americans that it is okay to go crazy when
shopping for deals is not the way to approach the buying markets. He mentions a Target
advertisement and states that, "The Crazy Target Lady is not a joke. Watch her cannibalize her
gingerbread man, or strategize her reverse psychology shopping techniques... she is America. She
might be a lunatic, but it's a culturally approved lunacy" (Leonard 166). The author emphasizes how
Americans embrace the acts of the target lady as funny and amusing, but during Black Friday
shopping, some shoppers will take the night to the extreme like the advertisement does. He does
remind us that there is light at the end of the tunnel, by reporting how shoppers are seeing the
problems with the night of crazy shopping. I agree with Leonard that there are problems with Black
Friday ads, and that consumers are realizing Black Friday shopping is taking away from
Thanksgiving.
First, it is true that advertisements are an issue with Black Friday shopping. Advertisements have a
big impact on the daily lives of people all around the world. Commercials can help persuade a
consumer on what to buy, how to look, or even the way to act in some cases. Leonard emphasizes
how the advertisements for Black Friday shopping take part in

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, where it is the beginning of the
traditional Christmas shopping season. Since Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in
November in the United States, Black Friday may be as early as the 23rd and as late as the
29th of November. More recently, there is new understanding that the term originates from the
theory that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss for most of the year (January through
November) and made their profit during the holiday season. When this would be recorded in the
financial records, accounting practices would use red ink to show negative amounts and black ink to
show positive amounts. Black Friday, under this theory, is the ... Show more content on

Black Friday Madness
In the essay "Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization," the author, Andrew Leonard, makes
the argument that, "The out–of–control marketing and consumer insanity" (135) has taken over
Thanksgiving and the days following it. Sadly, as consumers, we have forgotten what Thanksgiving
is really all about. Marketing businesses have gone overboard brainwashing consumers with
advertisements pumping them up to shop on Black Friday and the days that follow. Moreover,
marketing businesses have caused the actions we see and hear about on Black Friday such as people
being trampled, as consumers rush into stores to shop the sales, and are proof of this insanity. I
strongly agree with Leonard's arguments from "Black Friday: ... Show more content on

In addition, within the stores there are so many areas sections off with lines for their own for
specific items such as laptops, Ipads, and other expensive items that are very limited in the quantity
a store even receives. The insanity of the consumers showing up hours before the store even opens
or sales even began made me step back and wonder if it is really worth the few bucks of savings. I
have seen consumers rushing to be the first in line and closest to the pallets and racks of the items
still covered up. It is crazy people actually start taking the boxes apart to look what inside while
waiting for the sale time to start. I do not recommend bringing your kids to shop, because consumers
can be rude and very pushy. Also, some stores even announce specials that are only advertised in the
store during the Black Friday sale times. All these things seem to just send consumers into and even
bigger frenzy.
Leonard argues that it is time to take back Thanksgiving. He has many thoughts and points to the
insanity that Black Friday shopping brings. Leonard states "But there's also a point where healthy
consumerism becomes out–of–control marketing–driven commodity fetishism, and when we find
ourselves checking our smartphones for last minute online deals while standing in line for a chain

Black Friday Shopping Great discounts, lower prices, and many sales are things you think of when
you hear the words " Black Friday". A lot of Americans find that these sales are worth it , but who
wouldn't want discounts on new items? In my opinion, Black Friday is not even worth the time and
effort. Most of the time when you enter the store you are risking getting into an altercation with very
greedy people that only think about themselves since most items are a lot cheaper. You also have to
stand in long lines just to check out which takes a lot of time. I also feel that you shouldn't cut down
on family time to go shopping. Like myself most people are trying to do Christmas shopping for

You can shop online from at home, although some of the deals from Black Friday might be

are cheaper and sometimes lower than usual. Some stores also give you incentives like gift cards if
you purchase something or spend a certain amount. That all sounds like something most people are
interested in right? But sometimes people are mistaken. The cons of Black Friday are the large
crowds, tons of people, and long lines , but if you are ok with this then Black Friday is for you.

Comparison Of Cyber Monday And Black Friday
A growing number of businesses consider the Black Friday and Cyber Monday as the two most
profitable sales events of the year. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving Day, which stands for
the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.Similarly, Cyber Monday is the Monday following
the Black Friday in the United States. It seems that both of the two shopping days will make the
retailers and consumers go crazy extremely in that time. Thus, people are gradually paying attention
to the culture of consumerism, a phenomenon of over consumption, that is represented by Black
Friday and Cyber Mondaywith the prevalence of the two holidays.
Faced with this situation, people have provoked a heated debate: is it possible to resist the culture of
consumerism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But at the same time, it will cause the accidents such as shooting violence, stampedeand fighting.
And most likely, people usually buy the worthless goods on Black Friday.MehrozBaig implied that
it has targeted our perspective and reinforced a sense of material wealth (Baig 2014).Consumers just
think they get good deals subconsciously when they are crazy to buy the discounted items, but in
fact,it will be a matter of wasting something.Besides, Black Friday has jacked up the rate of
unemployment. Barry Gutierrezstated many companies fire their workers or cut their pay in order to
minimize the losses caused by lower prices on consumer goods (Gutierrez 2011). This kind of
business strategic hurt the employees greatly.
Facing with the bad influences of Black Friday, people increasingly boycott the shopping days.
Roger A. Dickinson and Mary L.Carsky said:"Boycotts hurt particular firms or areas by creating an
emotional response from the larger culture that is translated into economic action by consumers"
(Dickinson &Carsky 2005). To some extents, such boycotts affect consumer

Argumentative Essay: The Black Friday Rush
This Thanksgiving I was confronted with a choice that i've never been given before. After
contemplating whether to leave my home and it's occupants early to go to the mall with my
girlfriend or to remain with my family and friends for Thanksgiving dinner, I decided to go with the
latter option and asked permission to go Black Friday shopping. Unfortunately, my decision was
made for me by my matriarchal mother and I was forced to endure the tortures brought upon me by
small talk and a burnt turkey. This year, several stores and businesses chose to open their doors early
on Thanksgiving evening to kick off Black "Friday." The decision to open stores earlier was not only
an unforeseen decision but a clever one as well. Because stores are opening earlier, the Black Friday
rush can become manageable, reduce unemployment, and offer an alternative option to bonding with
family that doesn't involve awkward family greetings and stuffing one's face until he/she falls into a
deep food coma. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because stores have now extended Black Friday, less people will gather to await the opening of

Black Friday The Metaphorical God Of Consumerism
Black Friday, the metaphorical god of consumerism. The time of year when practically all things
purchasable in stores are dramatically reduced in price. Some people, such as journalist Mark Walsh,
hate this day of the year, equating it to "a black hole" that "sucked everything into its terrifying
abyss, where all substance is torn to shreds and obliterated". And while there may be some merit to
this stance, Black Friday is not an evil day. Black Friday provides many good things and does not
exclusively exsist for excessive material gain. While "drastically reduced prices" act as a very
effective lure to people looking to get something good for less expense, it also provides an
opportunity for families or individuals who are poorer than most

Essay On Black Friday

  • 1. Essay On Black Friday Long lines, crowds of people, a million sale signs, standing in below zero weather, and a bright brand–name store feeding materials to consumers is the Black Friday Tradition. No better way to give thanks by taking all the money in our pockets and showering it over companies. After devouring a massive meal with lots of turkey, fighting others over items and being uncivilized citizens is what follows. But why is it so many Americans indulge in this tradition? Besides the "cheap" prices on products, could it be the extensive advertisement drawing us? Or is there a more psychological explanation? In the article "Shopping on Black Friday Makes You Feel Like a Well– Loved Warrior" by Brain Handwerk, there's an overview study behind the appeal and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Shopping on Black Friday Makes you feel Like a Well– Loved Warrior" provides a handful of logical evidence to demonstrate the increased consumer participation growth on Black Friday. "Black Friday is ballooning–the ritualistic shopping frenzy on the day after thanksgiving is now just one part of a $50– billion weekend of commercial excess that includes Small Business Saturdays and Cyber Monday." (n.p). As the American society keeps joining in on the holiday sales, Handwerk creates a point of the competitiveness between companies that do anything to draw in more money. Not only is there challenges growing among businesses, but within people too, "a survey by the National Retail Federation, about 26 percent of 18– to 24–year–olds plan to shop on the holiday itself." (n.p). People of this age are catching on to the trend faster than others and find themselves building bonds when they share a common goal. Black Friday is the outlet and excuse for families to gather and buy each other gifts for Christmas. It's the thrill of the buy, and the method to engage with close ones to accomplish their goal, "on this year's Black Friday, the National Retail Federation estimates that more that 95 million Americans will rise with the sun and race through crowded stores competing for the bargains." (n.p.). Handwerk includes reliable sources for this research such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Persuasive Essay About Black Friday I normally participate in the Black Friday festivities myself so, going out and just asking questions was a normal part of it. It started about 6 years ago when I went out Black Friday shopping with two of my best friends. The three of us went to Best Buy with the intention of our friend Hansford getting this surround sound speaker for $200 that was regularly $300 I believe. It was my first time ever going as well as theirs too I believe. We were a year out of High School and all had jobs so once Hansford suggested it Jagger and I agreed to go out with him. We ended up leaving Thanksgiving dinner at about 8 and getting to Best Buy shortly after because the store opened at 12 a.m. that night. We sat out in the cold talked and joked for about 4 hours to only get in the store and Hansford decide he did not want the speaker anymore. Since that year I have been out for Black Friday even though two of the years I worked at Champs Sports for them. Now Black Friday is not even Black Friday its more so Black Thanksgiving Shopping. This year I decided to spend Thanksgiving in Ohio with my in–laws where I did not really know the area or what to expect. My plans this year was to leave the dinner at about 3 and get to Best Buy for this 49 inch TV that was $180 but, when I got to Best Buy there was already well over 100 people waiting in the line because the doors opened at 5 p.m. So, I decided to go across the street to a target where a 55 inch TV was on sale for $250. When I arrived a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The members who work at Walmart seem to make it like a friendly place and nothing will go wrong, yet the most unique people with awkward traits decide to go there, making it chaotic. Moreover, when Black Friday occurs, there is violence occurring all over the stores just to get what these shoppers desire, causing an abundant amount of severe injuries as a result of the chaotic state of mind. Specifically, people are fighting each other just to get a TV or an Xbox causing unorganization within the store causing evil. Similarly, in Lord of the Flies, chaos occurs for the same reason, those people want what they desire most, as in this case meat or a signal fire. With these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Black Friday Persuasive Essay Over the past few years, Black Friday sales across the nation have started earlier and earlier. These sales can potentially cut into what is more important: Thanksgiving. Black Friday sales started as early as 6pm in 2015. Will these sales start earlier next year? What about in a few years? This shopping frenzy is slowly replacing Thanksgiving traditions. All together, companies should be required to start at or later than 12am. Let Thanksgiving have its own day to celebrate with families and friends. Black Friday sales that start later have more benefits for both retailers and shoppers. Black Friday sales come along with extra effort and expense that aren't worth it. Advertisements, employees, and money are all part of the game. Does this expense and extra planning time bring additional profit? Adrienne Yih ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Working long, hard shifts to help customers buy clothes and gifts is the opposite of what Thanksgiving should be about. Thanksgiving should be a holiday to celebrate with friends and family. People should relax and remember what they are thankful for. With sale times starting as early as 6pm, workers don't receive the Thanksgiving time they need. Connie Miller, a worker at Kohl's, told reporters about her insane working schedule over Black Friday. She didn't get home til 1am on Thanksgiving morning. She got a few sleeping hours in until she had to wake up early to cook a Thanksgiving meal for 15 people, who were arriving at noon. She left the celebration early to get to work by 5:30 pm and continued working until just after midnight. The next day, she left home and returned back to work at 6 am on Black Friday for an eight hour shift. Connie told reporters, "They don't even give you time to come home and actually go to sleep before you're due back. We're working on Thanksgiving...if you'd valued family, we'd be at home." • 11. Black Friday Commercial Essay After an eventful day of celebrating Thanksgiving with beloved family and friends, millions of Americans head out at a late hour to snag the cheapest deals of the year. The "American holiday," Black Friday, draws approximately 164 million Americans to trendy stores all across America (CBS News). The chaotic crowds begin their night–long shopping excursion in the late evening of Thanksgiving, leaving family and friends behind to hunt for the latest trends. One of the big brand names which utilizes Black Friday to draw in customers is Macy's. Macy's, a reputable clothing store, produced a Black Friday commercial, "Screamers" in the Fall of 2011. "Screamers," starring the famous pop singer, Justin Bieber was designed to attract Black Friday shoppers to their high–end store. The commercial was aired to convince specific viewers that Macy's is a friendly, reputable, and informative company. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The advertisement makes the viewers feel comfortable, providing a good laugh for the audience. The audience feels the vibe of the holiday spirit, as Bieber's famous holiday jingle, Under The Mistletoe, plays in the background of the scene. Strong, masculine men hysterically scream as Bieber approaches Macy's to shop. The men's sporadic screams are replaced with teenage girl screams, in order to make viewers laugh. Switching the screams not only makes the viewers chuckle but implies that everyone loves the iconic pop singer, Bieber, even masculine men. To play into sales and persuade the audience's emotions, Macy's informs the viewers at the end of the commercial that for every $65 Justin Bieber fragrance gift set sold, Macy's would willingly donate $2 to the Make–A–Wish. Using the donation to Make–A–Wish grasps the viewer's emotional side to show the support that Macy's is giving to the less fortunate. • 13. Impact Of Black Friday Impact of Black Friday on Society We already know that the "Black Friday" is an American tradition that consists of a drop in prices in major stores, during the last Friday of November, coinciding with the opening of Christmas shopping. But what is the origin of this celebration? The first use of the term "Black Friday" occurred not to refer to Christmas shopping, but in relation to an economic crisis: on Friday, September 24, 1869, two relentless Wall Street financiers, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, After an intense work to obtain great benefits, they failed in their efforts, and the market went bankrupt. For that reason, that day was named as the "Black Friday". Another of the stories that accompany the term "Black Friday" has to do with the role of small businesses in the market. Tradition has it that, after a whole year of losses, finally, after Thanksgiving, the Christmas season arrived, the day from which the benefits began, and with them, instead of red numbers, "black numbers" were produced. The tradition is indeed a positive practice for the economy of a country, simultaneously, gives the possibility to millions of hard workers to recover their lost through the year, and to bring back their numbers. Also it gives the opportunity to small business to create more profits through advertising their products. Perhaps it is opposite to peoples believes and morals about what Christmas should be about, the Black Friday, which is such a cold and unsensitive celebration it is ... • 15. Persuasive Speech : ' Black Friday ' Purpose Statement: To try to persuade this audience to boycott Black Friday. Thesis statement: Black Friday has turned a family holiday shopping tradition into a bizarre corporate greed competition that has resulted in unnecessary violence, and is now taking over a nationally recognized holiday. Introduction Attention Getter: Black Friday! The BEST deal! Or, is it really worth it? More importantly, why should we boycott it? Overview of Main Points: Today I'm going to talk about Black Friday. I'm going to give a brief history of the term, what it is today, why we should boycott, and offer some alternatives to holiday shopping. (Let's begin with some history) I. I found several sources stating how the term "Black Friday" began. Some of the first dates I came across were to describe giant stock market crashes. The term started being used later by the Philadelphia Police Department the day after Thanksgiving. A. The first "Black Friday" on record was on September 24, 1869. 1. According to an article on PBS.org, and Investopedia.com, this day was deemed Black Friday after the crash of the gold market in the United States. 2. The scandal of that day started to coin the term "black" to describe other horrible days in financial markets where stocks have plummeted. B. In the early 1960s the Philadelphia police department started calling the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday to describe the horrible traffic conditions downtown. 1. • 17. Good Friday and Lent All About Lent Q: What is Lent? A:Historically, Lent is the forty day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, it began on Ash Wednesday and ended on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter Sunday). In recent years, this has been modified so that it now ends with evening Mass on Holy Thursday, to prepare the way for Triduum. Q: Why are Sundays excluded from the reckoning of the forty days? A: Because Sunday is the day on which Christ arose, making it an inappropriate day to fast and mourn our sins. On Sunday we must celebrate Christ's resurrection for our salvation. It is Friday on which we commemorate his death for our sins. The Sundays of the year are days of celebration and the Fridays of the year are days of penance. Q: Why are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the rest of the year Catholics in this country are permitted to use a different act of penance on Friday in place of abstinence, though all Fridays are days of penance on which we are required to do something expressing sorrow for our sins, just as Sundays are holy days on which we are required to worship and celebrate God's great gift of salvation. Q: Why are acts of repentance appropriate at this time of year? A: Because it is the time leading up to the commemoration of Our Lord's death for our sins and the commemoration of his resurrection for our salvation. It is thus especially appropriate to mourn the sins for which he died. Human have an innate psychological need to mourn tragedies, and our sins are tragedies of the greatest sort. Due to our fallen nature humans also have a need to have set times in which to engage in behavior (which is why we have Sundays as a set time to rest and worship, since we would otherwise be likely to forget to devote sufficient time to rest and worship), it is appropriate to have set times of repentance. Lent is one of those set times. Q: What are appropriate activities for ordinary days during Lent? A: Giving up something we enjoy for Lent, doing of physical or spiritual acts of mercy for others, prayer, fasting, abstinence, going to confession, and other acts expressing repentance in general. Q: Is the custom of giving up something for Lent mandatory? A: No. However, it is a salutary custom, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Black and Blue Friday Essay examples The Friday after Thanksgiving is everything from a bargain hunter's dream come true to a husband's worst nightmare. Since the early to mid–sixties it was been given the name "Black Friday." Black Friday is day where stores around the country open their doors early to welcome the start of the Christmas shopping season. This is the day if you get to the mall by five a.m., you are late and will not find a parking place. It is the same day where you start off by being cussed by a pregnant woman, and end by being beat–up by an elderly lady resembling your grandmother. Much is to be said for the day, and for those whom brave mess. The name "Black Friday" comes from Philadelphia in the mid 1960's. It was given two meanings. The first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When deciding to take your chances on this sociocultural phenomenon, keep in mind the three basic rules. One, lines are faster than crowds. Two, make sure to grab a coffee or your favorite energy drink, for you're in for a long day. Three, the early bird gets the worm. Sadly, the Starbucks did not open until four–thirty, leaving me without caffeine for an hour and a half prior to their opening. The average Black Friday shopper is surrounded by a melting pot of fellow shoppers. The variety of people is significantly differential. From shopping freaks to their bored husbands, and mean old ladies to passed out children, along with everything in–between can be found on the horrific morning. While sitting on an uncomfortable plastic–like couch, I started to depict these people's personalities, to elaborate on their interactions. The Single Lady's Club: The first of these personalities is the bargain shopper. The bargain shopper is usually accompanied by other bargain shoppers; they run in packs. Generally these shoppers are women, because the largest day for men's shopping is on Christmas Eve when they have run out of time to procrastinate any longer. • 23. Negative Essay : The Darkness That Is Black Friday The Darkness that is Black Friday This year, the holiday shopping season's hottest toy is slated to be a Hatchimal. Mothers around America will head to stores to purchase this hot commodity and, for just $48.00, will make their child's Christmas one to remember. But, what most people don't realize is that many troubles will begin to ensue as these sales begin. Although Black Friday allows people to purchase gifts they otherwise couldn't afford as well as help companies prosper, Black Friday drags our society down through violence and consumerism. The term Black Friday was used in the 1950s by cops in Philadelphia to describe the "chaos" that took place the following day of a special Thanksgiving(Pruitt 1). Shoppers and tourists from all around would come to the city before the Army–Navy football game that takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The police officers in Philadelphia were given longer shifts to control the overwhelmingly large numbers of people and traffic. Shoplifters and people of all sorts began to take advantage of the big sales occurring Friday causing trouble for many police officers and security guards all over the city. Quickly, Black Friday began to catch on. This, however, eventually led to many shop owners "unsuccessfully chang[ing] it to Big Friday to remove the negative connotations" (Pruitt 1). Or is this the day (or weekend) to purchase all your Christmas gifts? Depending on what you may have been looking for, you may have been able to snag a good deal. Yet, isn't it sad the day after our country takes a day of rest (for most) to celebrate "Thanksgiving," we then stand in line to grab a good deal. Fights take place. Greed overtakes many. How do we go from a state of "Thanksgiving" to a state of greed? One day we were thankful, and the next greedy! Are we consumed with the item, or the deal? My Experience I've only ever gotten up early to go "Black Friday Shopping" once in all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course I was disappointed, but it wasn't a huge deal to me. Luckily, a couple days later, Toys R Us had the Zune for $99 (The Black Friday deal)! It was available in only brown. I bought 2! I sold one on Ebay and made a profit! Obviously, this does not happen to everyone. I got lucky. The Root Issue Even if I did not obtain the Zune, would it be appropriate for me to start a fight? If your child started fighting with another child over some deal or product, what would you do? Some kind of discipline would be in order, right? Yet, so many adults act like animals during this one day (or weekend). Why is this the case? James tells us this happens first and foremost because we are sinners and our desires entice us which then leads to sin (James 1:15). This explains why people act ridiculously. I doubt anyone reading this ever acts crazy like those on Black Friday, right (Kidding!)? Remember, Jesus died for your sins. You are forgiven. Because of the work of Jesus, you are not condemned (Romans 8:1)! Even if you do not rise up early on Black Friday, please pray for those who participated in Black Friday and for those whose desires got the best of them during this time.

  • 32. Analysis Of Black Friday : Consumerism Minus Civilization Black Friday shopping is a controversial issue in the United States; while many believe the day after Thanksgiving is a part of holiday festivities, others view it as destructive. Throughout "Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization," Andrew Leonard argues that the chaos of Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in which crowds of Americans shop all night for extremely low prices, lessens the sophistication of Americans and the true meaning of the holidays. People become so consumed in the idea of endless sale prices that they forget to embrace what they already have, such as family, food, and shelter. He believes that Black Friday shopping has become out of control and describes the negative effects of excessive consumerism. he explains how most consumers act completely insane while Black Friday shopping and how society encourages this behavior by creating commercials and advertisements. Furthermore, Leonard states that it hurts the economy and damages one's mental health. While Leonard is probably wrong when he claims that Black Friday shopping is completely troublesome to America's well–being, he is right that consumerism overpowers the true significance of Thanksgiving. In his argument, Leonard guessed that Black Friday shopping is degrading to America as a whole. Throughout the article, he states that people should avoid large sprees of retail spending "For the sake of the U.S. economy" (Leonard 165); he insists that voluntarily overbuying causes the country to ... In turn, many of the workers used this day to start their shopping for the holiday season, making the day after the Thanksgiving a day that many stores started making huge profits. One origin of the superstition of Friday the 13th occur due to Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. In his book on Friday 13, October 1307 hundreds of Knights Templar were arrested and burnt across France. Knights Templar were a religious group of unmarried men who came together to protect Christians during the Crusades. • 50. The Origin Of Black Friday : The History Of Black Friday To better understand how Thanksgiving Day as well as the entire weekend are connected with shopping, it is necessary to define the days as well as look into the history of the days that embody the holiday weekend. "In the United States, Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday on the fourth Thursday in November. On this day, people remember the first American thanksgiving, when the first European settlers had been taught how to grow food by the Native Americans, and they celebrated the successful harvest together" (Collins Dictionary). Thanksgiving Day in the United States is also a day for feasting, football, and spending time with family and friends. Black Friday has several stories of the phrase's origin, only one of these origin stories is actually true. The most common story of the phrase Black Friday's origin is that for the majority of the year, January through November, retailers traditionally operate at a financial loss and made a majority of their profit for the year during the holiday season, starting at the day after Thanksgiving Day. When recorded in financial statements, accounting practices used red ink to display negative amounts and positive amounts with black ink. Thus, Black Friday is the beginning of the period when businesses, mostly retail, would take in profits instead of losses for the year. The earliest report of the "black in theory" was used in the November 28, 1981 edition of Philadelphia Inquirer (Business ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 54. Black Friday And Its Effect On America Since the 1960s, consumers have been waking up during the early morning hours the day after Thanksgiving to score the lowest prices of the year. Black Friday kicks off the Christmas shopping season, with prices so low people get into physical fights in hopes of grabbing the last item. But has Black Friday ran its course? Many analyst seem to think that Black Friday will have very little importance in the upcoming years, and I would have to agree with them. Although I do believe that the weekend after Thanksgiving will always be a little busier than any other weekend, I believe the urgency consumers feel to wake up at 3 a.m. on Black Friday to snag the best deals will eventually cease to exist. One of the largest reasons I believe that Black Friday will lose its importance is that many stores are now starting to open their doors on Thanksgiving evening. This year, many stores opened their doors at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, offering the same deals that consumers could receive the following day, Black Friday. In my own personal experience, I believe the stores were busier Thursday evening than they were on Black Friday itself. Large box stores such as Wal–Mart and Target are hurting their own Black Friday sales by making Black Friday less exclusive. • 60. Black Tuesday : Black Friday Black Friday has multiple reasons for it being named "Black Friday". It traces back to the 1950's when it was called "Black Friday" because of the surplus amounts of call–ins for employees trying to score a four–day weekend after Thanksgiving. In Philadelphia during 1961, the Friday after Thanksgiving was called Black Friday because it was the day when stores were coming out of the "red", which was the downward shopping period between July and August. This was the biggest time retailors saw the numbers, "in the red". The Friday after Thanksgiving marked when retailors saw the profit go up, "in the black"; therefore, the term Black Friday arose. As Black Friday has progressed along with retailors marketing their products and their sales, it has become a national day of shopping to get the best deals. Americans mainly go shopping on this day to get huge deals for Christmas presents. Stores have even taken this great opportunity to open their establishments for 24 hours. Just last year, consumers spent a whopping $57,400,000,000 with each consumer individually spending $410 on average. The #1 retailor customers purchased from and camped out at was Best Buy. All of the statistics are based on 2013 and this year was projected to be an 11% increase. • 66. Summary Of Black Friday : Consumerism Minus Civilization Andrew Leonard's "Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization" argues that the Black Friday shopping spree has begun to get out of hand in the previous years. Leonard explains that consumerism is a great thing for America, but showing Americans that it is okay to go crazy when shopping for deals is not the way to approach the buying markets. He mentions a Target advertisement and states that, "The Crazy Target Lady is not a joke. Watch her cannibalize her gingerbread man, or strategize her reverse psychology shopping techniques... she is America. She might be a lunatic, but it's a culturally approved lunacy" (Leonard 166). The author emphasizes how Americans embrace the acts of the target lady as funny and amusing, but during Black Friday shopping, some shoppers will take the night to the extreme like the advertisement does. He does remind us that there is light at the end of the tunnel, by reporting how shoppers are seeing the problems with the night of crazy shopping. I agree with Leonard that there are problems with Black Friday ads, and that consumers are realizing Black Friday shopping is taking away from Thanksgiving. First, it is true that advertisements are an issue with Black Friday shopping. Advertisements have a big impact on the daily lives of people all around the world. The poll of 1,189 adults, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percent, found that 49 percent disapproved of stores opening on Thanksgiving Day, with 16 percent approving and 34 percent neutral. (newyorktimes.com some retailers promote to remain closed. ) I do believe that Black Friday as we know it is dead. No matter how loud the public or employees voice their opinions I believe Walmart summed it up best by saying that they were doing the consumers a favor by being open on Thanksgiving to do away with the long lines on Black Friday. Black Friday Madness Black Friday Madness In the essay "Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization," the author, Andrew Leonard, makes the argument that, "The out–of–control marketing and consumer insanity" (135) has taken over Thanksgiving and the days following it. Sadly, as consumers, we have forgotten what Thanksgiving is really all about. Marketing businesses have gone overboard brainwashing consumers with advertisements pumping them up to shop on Black Friday and the days that follow. Moreover, marketing businesses have caused the actions we see and hear about on Black Friday such as people being trampled, as consumers rush into stores to shop the sales, and are proof of this insanity. I strongly agree with Leonard's arguments from "Black Friday: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, within the stores there are so many areas sections off with lines for their own for specific items such as laptops, Ipads, and other expensive items that are very limited in the quantity a store even receives. The insanity of the consumers showing up hours before the store even opens or sales even began made me step back and wonder if it is really worth the few bucks of savings. I have seen consumers rushing to be the first in line and closest to the pallets and racks of the items still covered up. It is crazy people actually start taking the boxes apart to look what inside while waiting for the sale time to start. I do not recommend bringing your kids to shop, because consumers can be rude and very pushy. Also, some stores even announce specials that are only advertised in the store during the Black Friday sale times. All these things seem to just send consumers into and even bigger frenzy. Leonard argues that it is time to take back Thanksgiving. He has many thoughts and points to the insanity that Black Friday shopping brings. Leonard states "But there's also a point where healthy consumerism becomes out–of–control marketing–driven commodity fetishism, and when we find ourselves checking our smartphones for last minute online deals while standing in line for a chain store opening at midnight on Thanksgiving, ... • 72. Black Friday Research Papers Black Friday Shopping Great discounts, lower prices, and many sales are things you think of when you hear the words " Black Friday". A lot of Americans find that these sales are worth it , but who wouldn't want discounts on new items? In my opinion, Black Friday is not even worth the time and effort. Most of the time when you enter the store you are risking getting into an altercation with very greedy people that only think about themselves since most items are a lot cheaper. You also have to stand in long lines just to check out which takes a lot of time. I also feel that you shouldn't cut down on family time to go shopping. Like myself most people are trying to do Christmas shopping for family members , but end up buying things for themselves. For the duration of Black Friday, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If no one went shopping on Black Friday it wouldn't mean people would miss out on holiday–time deals. Cyber Monday, which is usually the Monday following Thanksgiving, has become my preferred way to shop and is a safer, less stressful, and less time consuming way. You won't have camp outside of Walmart or any other store for hours, no altercations with people for the last TV. You can shop online from at home, although some of the deals from Black Friday might be gone, many sites offer better or different sales on Cyber Monday. During Black Friday most things are cheaper and sometimes lower than usual. Some stores also give you incentives like gift cards if you purchase something or spend a certain amount. That all sounds like something most people are interested in right? But sometimes people are mistaken. The cons of Black Friday are the large crowds, tons of people, and long lines , but if you are ok with this then Black Friday is for you. Personally I'm not a huge fan of Black Friday not matter how much you save. I would rather be at home with my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Comparison Of Cyber Monday And Black Friday A growing number of businesses consider the Black Friday and Cyber Monday as the two most profitable sales events of the year. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving Day, which stands for the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.Similarly, Cyber Monday is the Monday following the Black Friday in the United States. It seems that both of the two shopping days will make the retailers and consumers go crazy extremely in that time. Thus, people are gradually paying attention to the culture of consumerism, a phenomenon of over consumption, that is represented by Black Friday and Cyber Mondaywith the prevalence of the two holidays. Faced with this situation, people have provoked a heated debate: is it possible to resist the culture of consumerism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But at the same time, it will cause the accidents such as shooting violence, stampedeand fighting. And most likely, people usually buy the worthless goods on Black Friday.MehrozBaig implied that it has targeted our perspective and reinforced a sense of material wealth (Baig 2014).Consumers just think they get good deals subconsciously when they are crazy to buy the discounted items, but in fact,it will be a matter of wasting something.Besides, Black Friday has jacked up the rate of unemployment. Barry Gutierrezstated many companies fire their workers or cut their pay in order to minimize the losses caused by lower prices on consumer goods (Gutierrez 2011). This kind of business strategic hurt the employees greatly. Facing with the bad influences of Black Friday, people increasingly boycott the shopping days. Roger A. Dickinson and Mary L.Carsky said:"Boycotts hurt particular firms or areas by creating an emotional response from the larger culture that is translated into economic action by consumers" (Dickinson &Carsky 2005). • 76. Argumentative Essay: The Black Friday Rush This Thanksgiving I was confronted with a choice that i've never been given before. After contemplating whether to leave my home and it's occupants early to go to the mall with my girlfriend or to remain with my family and friends for Thanksgiving dinner, I decided to go with the latter option and asked permission to go Black Friday shopping. Unfortunately, my decision was made for me by my matriarchal mother and I was forced to endure the tortures brought upon me by small talk and a burnt turkey. This year, several stores and businesses chose to open their doors early on Thanksgiving evening to kick off Black "Friday." The decision to open stores earlier was not only an unforeseen decision but a clever one as well. Because stores are opening earlier, the Black Friday rush can become manageable, reduce unemployment, and offer an alternative option to bonding with family that doesn't involve awkward family greetings and stuffing one's face until he/she falls into a deep food coma. ... Because stores have now extended Black Friday, less people will gather to await the opening of stores, majorly because they are keeping with tradition and celebrating Thanksgiving dinner at home rather than joining a mob of mortals eager to get their hands on decent deals. Also, by implementing different deals at different timings, people will arrive at the stores at various times, not all at once. Therefore, the risk of mobs forming and trampling others is greatly ... • 78. Black Friday The Metaphorical God Of Consumerism Black Friday, the metaphorical god of consumerism. The time of year when practically all things purchasable in stores are dramatically reduced in price. Some people, such as journalist Mark Walsh, hate this day of the year, equating it to "a black hole" that "sucked everything into its terrifying abyss, where all substance is torn to shreds and obliterated". And while there may be some merit to this stance, Black Friday is not an evil day. Black Friday provides many good things and does not exclusively exsist for excessive material gain. While "drastically reduced prices" act as a very effective lure to people looking to get something good for less expense, it also provides an opportunity for families or individuals who are poorer than most ...
