Why I Want To Be An Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity
Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated have made everlasting effects on my life.
Having mentors in this fraternity allowed me to see how every member feels responsible for
improving the communities that they are from. They never hesitate to take the leadership roles that
are needed to see change. I would like to become a member of Alpha Phi Alpha because it would
allow us to share a brotherhood with great men, it will allow me to make valuable connections with
other positive men around the world, and it will help me become the best version of myself. My
desire to become a member of this fraternity began my freshmen year after I attended the first
informational meeting. At this meeting I was able to speak with members and also learn from them.
They each have strong leadership characteristics that allow them to serve on executive boards across
campus and they all are high achieving students at Cornell. Coming from an all male high school in
Chicago, mentors were a limited resources. Not having positive mentors around forced us to latch
on to the few positive ones that would come around. Fortunately for myself, members of Alpha Phi
Alpha would make it their duty to come visit us every two weeks to speak about going to college
and how to best manage ourselves. Senator Mr. Roland Burris is the name ... Show more content on

Every member understands their duties as Ivy League black male and how to use their status to
better the situation of others. I chose to pursue Alpha because they exhibit the true meaning of
brotherhood and thrive in every endeavor they make. As I continue to learn more and more about the
organization, I find other reasons why I want to be a member. They are always giving one hundred
percent to everything that they do. They make it evident that they possess the skills necessary to be
great in any field that they so

The Fraternity Of The Brotherhood
Jesse joined Alpha Phi Alpha in order to bond with like–minded individuals. Alpha Phi Alpha was
the first Black Greek–letter intercollegiate fraternity in the United States founded on Cornell 's
campus in 1906 initially created as a Black men 's literary and support group. The purpose of the
organization is to foster strong bonds between men of African descent who faced racial prejudice.
The organization combines social purpose with social action. Jesse wanted to be part of the
brotherhood: I just had more relationships with African Americans at Cornell than I did with
majority students...As far as my pledge interest, and subsequently being initiated by Alpha Phi
Alpha fraternity, a couple of my close friends were in the frat. They spoke good things of it, and I
thought that it would be nice to join and be part of the brotherhood that was for us.
Harriet found solace in pledging Delta Sigma Theta, a Black Greek–letter sorority dedicated to
public service, which was founded in 1913. One of her really good friends, who was a Black Cuban,
decided to pledge with her. She also sang in Pamoja–Ni Gospel choir. Harriet talks about the
importance of community in an isolated environment:
I think that Blacks who wind up going to Cornell, in part because we have this shared experience of
being in an isolated environment. I think all of us grow, in part as a result of figuring out how to deal
with whatever challenges come up, the social and cultural challenges, and I think that

Comparison Of Frederick Douglass And Martin Luther King Jr
Out of oppression rises resilient individuals whose voices cannot be silenced. Though the exact
circumstances may vary, both Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. were empowered in
the face of persecution. Both came from a place of suffering and restriction, were inspired by the
brutality the observed, and attacks institutions which allowed these atrocities and others to continue.
Their words, powerful and thought–provoking, will serve as pieces that will not soon be forgotten.
Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. both utilized certain writing techniques to emphasize
their story and increase the degree of impact to the reader. In both pieces, Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass and Letter from Birmingham Jail, emotionally charged elements are included to
create a response from the reader. Douglass ultilizes a deeply personal and graphic style.
Remembering the horrific story of his Aunt Hester, Douglass recounts, "and after rolling up his
sleeves, he (slave master) commenced to lay on the heavy cow skin, and soon the warm, red blood
(amid heartrending shrieks from her, and horrid oaths from him) came dripping to the floor." In
contrast, King calls upon the emotion of the recipients through his reference to the greater evil
committed against society. Relating what he has seen to the larger picture, King describes, "But
when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and
brothers at whim; when you have seen

Why Do I Want To Be Alpha Phi Alpha
Why do I want to be a member of Alpha Phi Alpha? The question was asked, why do I want to be a
member of Alpha Phi Alpha? Before answering the question, I would like to talk about myself as
this will provide a greater context to my response. For the last 10 years or so of my life, I have
dedicated myself to be a servant leader by creating opportunities for others. As a child, I grew up in
a challenging environment but through my faith in God, many of my bad decisions were turned–
around to be learning lessons and breadcrumbs to greater opportunities. As I lacked a role model, I
have made it my personal quest to be a role model to others so that they don't have to learn so many
lessons the hard way, as I did. To that end, I have been an advocate and champion of Advancing
Minorities Interest in Engineering (AMIE), I serve as the Liaison for The Society of American
Military Engineers (SAME), as well as the President of the Mordecai Group ... Show more content

with other engineers, as well as provide them exposure to construction activities. By being a
champion for this program, I have created lasting relationships, which I have been able to leverage

To the gentlemen of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc.,
My goal in life is to be a positive lasting influence on the lives of others. Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated is comprised of legendary, talented, educated men who have done
just this. I would like to join this organization to carry out the legacy of manly deeds, scholarship,
and love for all mankind.
Other Greek fraternities were founded on similar principles of brotherhood, community service, and
academic excellence, but I find myself especially drawn to Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Incorporated because of the men who have made such a lasting impression on my life.

After having defied the odds myself by graduating from college and working toward two Master's
degrees, I owe it to the next generation to pass the torch. They have too much against them:
threats both seen and unseen. With love for all mankind in my heart, it is important that I do all I can
to preserve our communities.
If so fortunate to become a member of this distinguished organization I hope to serve the community
as well as form life–long bonds through the principle of brotherhood. An Oromo proverb states,
"Knowledge kept to oneself is as useless as a candle burning in a pot." I believe this same statement
applies to an individual's talents and skills. Talents and skills that are given to us, but not used, are
useless. Accordingly, as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
Incorporated, I will make sure to continue the work of Alpha in my service to others throughout my
life. In hopes of leaving a legacy of manly deeds, scholarship, and most importantly love.
Best Regards,
Rexrian (Rex) L.

The For Black Greek Organizations
Trailblazers for Black Greek Organizations in Higher Education:
The Journey of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.,
African American education systems and colleges faced many issues systematically and socially.
The process of integrating colleges was a process faced with opposition because the idea that higher
education was made for strictly for white upper–class men was still the underlying ideal. While
equal opportunity was promoted in the light, behind the scenes, systematically money, policy,
procedure hindered black education and equal opportunity. Realizing this injustice, black students
sought to find their own solutions to social justice issues happening not only within higher education
but their communities while leading by example.
On December 5, 1776 the first collegiate fraternal greek letter organization in the United States, Phi
Beta Kappa was founded at Yale, the College of William and Mary.Building from the example of
literary organizations, which were based on literary debates, and election, Phi Beta Kappa set many
standards for collegiate greek letter organizations in the realm of rituals/traditions, selective
admittance, faculty and community support. It was not until one hundred and thirty years that the
first black greek letter organization, Alpha Phi Alpha was founded. The need of this organization
emerged from a lack of admittance and representation in social clubs and greek organizations
established on college

Personal Narrative : A First Generation College Student Essay
Alfreda was a first generation college student. She had a difficult academic experience being one of
only four African American students majoring in animal science. She used her social life to help her
cope with the experience. Alfreda mentioned Zinck 's night which is a campus tradition named after
a bar keeper in Ithaca that owned a bar that was a haven for college students. Alfreda found no
interest in this event, however, she did participate in Slope day because it was an opportunity for her
and her friends to celebrate the last day of school. Instead of participating in the university–wide
homecoming, she mentions a separate homecoming sponsored by a Black fraternity, Alpha Phi
Alpha and the Festival of Black Gospel. She states: I absolutely participated in Slope Day. Slope
Day just seemed like a group effort. It was end of year, everyone 's excited to be finished with the
year. So that 's kind of a given. I 'd say the Alpha Phi Alpha homecoming was something that we
always did. Honestly now as an alumni, I look back and get all these messages about the events, like
Zinck 's Night and all that. I didn 't participate in any of that, the traditional Cornell events. [Instead]
we had the Black Gospel festival... Honestly I think if my group of friends and community didn 't
seem very involved, weren 't very involved in events like Cornell 's Homecoming and Zinck 's and
all that, I didn 't seem very interested in it. Even knowing the history I just wasn 't very

What are your commitments for this school year?
This school year I am employed at the Jundt Art Museum where I work between 6 to 10 hours a
week during the school day and weekends. In addition, I am a Campus Kids mentor. I spend time
every week with a student in the 5th grade doing activities ranging from school visits, games, and
tutoring. This semester I plan to become more involved with the club Mans Best Friend and
volunteer at the local animal shelter.

I have always wanted to join a sorority and although I love Gonzaga and I am very happy with my
decision I felt like I was missing out. I am drawn to Alpha Pi Phi specifically because of the strong
focus on sisterhood. In addition, as I got to know members of Alpha Pi Phi I enjoyed the fact that all
of the girls are very unique and each bring their own unique qualities to create one united sisterhood.
What are some stereotypes you've heard about Greek life and what would you do to challenge them?
Stereotypes that I have heard about Greek Life include that it is just about partying and the members
are fake or catty. To challenge this stereotype I would lead by example to prove to others that Greek
Life does not focus on partying, but in fact focuses on forming friendships, learning, and helping
others. By showing others that those in Greek Life are more focused on school and philanthropy it
can have an affect on changing this stereotype for many Greek organizations. There is also a very
common stereotype that girls in sororities are catty or fake. To challenge this stereotype at Gonzaga
I would show other students that members of Alpha Pi Phi are dedicated to forming a strong
sisterhood that values uniqueness and diversity. Valuing others for who they are conveys the
message that there is no need to be fake because you are accepted for your

Ander to Remorse in the Excerpt, Learning to Read by...
Every author has a different writing style in comparison. They convey their messages in multiple
ways; using different tones to evoke certain moods on their readers. Some authors use a few
different ways to catch their audiences attention; persuading them using logic, ethics and emotion.
In the excerpt "Learning to Read" by Malcolm X, he uses logic and emotion to persuade his
audience. By using anger to evoke remorse in his readers. Malcolm X references historical events to
convey his message. Malcolm X has a vast audience in this writing. He did not write for one
particular person or group. Malcolm X wants to inform and persuade an individual who is not aware
of what he has discovered. He wanted others to know of the information he discovered of the horror
the slaves endured. "Books like the one by Frederick Olmstead opened my eyes to the horrors
suffered when the slave was landed in the United States."(Malcolm X). He not only had proof to
share but had multiple references to provide clarity and proof. Malcolm X wrote his piece by
starting in the present, then going back ad forth between the past and present. Doing so made this
piece easy to follow and comprehend. He uses examples from the past to show clarity in the present.
Malcolm X uses an abundance of strong and descriptive words and phrases. He used the following
words to convey his message in a stronger stance: skin game, shameful and inevitable. "The
American black man is the worlds most shameful case of

Hero Vs Hero
Pericles once said " The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before
them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it." More than 2000 years later,
Pericles thoughts are still those of what today's hero is. A hero today struggles, yet still manages to
overcome these complications with an act of bravery. Rather than thinking of themselves, a hero is
usually willing to put others before themselves and show audacity in the face of difficulties.
First, Heroes are not thinking of themselves, but instead are showing acts of kindness towards
others. For example, after 9/11 a large amount of sailors showed up to evacuate Manhattan, due to
closed down airplanes and subways. These sailors showed pluck because many of them believed
they were a target for another attack. Vincent Ardolino, one of the captains who responded to the
call, recounts his conversation with his wife before he leaves. After learning of his decision,
Ardolino's wife asks "But what if they attack again."To this he responds "Well then that's something
I have to live with (Boatlift Documentary)" showing that he does not think about what may happen
to him, but about what may happen to others. Similarly to his decisions is the mole rescue workers
who dug people out of their homes after the earthquake in Mexico. Not only have these rescue
workers volunteered in this recent earthquake, but they have also taken action in earthquakes around
the world and have helped look

Benefits Of Alpha Phi Alpha
The objectives of Alpha Phi Alpha are to stimulate the ambition of its members, to prepare them for
the greatest usefulness in the cause of Humanity, Freedom, and Dignity of the individual; to
encourage the highest and noblest form or manhood and to aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts
to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status. My previous work experience included
innovation in many areas but mostly in myself. I had to inform new students about all campus
resources, involvement opportunities, and campus policies, while also serving as a role model and
mentor to these students as they make their transition to college. This meant taking a look at myself
and asking, "Am I the best representation that this University has to offer?"; I was not, it was the
drive I had for myself to display the best example to these students. This is what led me to change; I
am very self–motivated and ambitious which is one of the objectives of this fraternity. I know I have

My Favorite Dad
When I was attending elementary school, my third grade teacher, Mrs. Leak, assigned the class a
journal, "who do you consider a hero and why?" Of course many of my peers wrote Batman,
Superman, and Wonder woman. There were even a few who said no one. Some individuals may not
ever believe in heroes, but they have never met my dad. If I was to spell out perfection, it would be
my dad. Everything about my father make him the best hero including; his advice, personality,
appearance, his wardrobe and his aggressive voice. My father may radiate as a normal individual
when approaching him. However; There are an abundance of special characteristics that make him
my favorite hero. He is an average height male, 5"10'. He has a 350 lbs. stocky, muscular frame
which comes from being an athlete throughout his younger years. His hazel brown eyes share the
stories he has been through, which causes him not to display his straight, white teeth. His
complexion is similar to a dark chocolate dove with not a hint of error. His hair is curly, thick, and
dark brown , which corresponds great with the beard covering his face like Jolly Old St. Nicholas.
The clothing he wears such as suits, ties, and slacks or T–shirts', jeans, and Jordan's symbolize how
spontaneous he can be. The aroma of his Yves Saint Laurent cologne sticks to him like a fly caught

What Is Equality In Susan B Anthony's Speech
From a young age, American students are able to comprehend the idea that our nation's success
tends to center around the equality of the people. History classes have taught us that the less
discrimination in this world, the easier a country can succeed. Although the nation continues to fight
the war of inequality between its citizens through endless protests and movements, the nation itself
has promised equality to all minorities no matter their color or gender. With new laws added to the
Bill of Rights, the United States have been able to resolve government issues regarding civil
liberties such as freedom of speech, voting regulations and female restrictions that have haunted us
from our American past.
Voting, in this day and age, is easily taken for granted by most. When Susan B. Anthony gave her
speech in 1873 in the hope of the country bettering their laws to comply with the female population,
she knew the nation's laws complied most with "the white male citizens"(Source E) of the country.
Knowing that mistreatment in society was something shared between minorities, Anthony called out
the group of people that were treated better than anyone. When speaking to her audience, Anthony
uses ethos in her speech in order to make her point clear that withholding women's civil liberties is
wrong. Being a woman in 1873, Anthony faced discrimination in her everyday life; for this reason,
she chose to focus on changing not only the country's social discrimination, but also it's

Eritrea attending an Ivy League institution on stolen land. Coming to the realization of all these
intersections of the identities that bring privileges or discrimination, I sought whatever avenues I
could find to ameliorate difficulties faced based on identity. But, another thing I realized early on

Frederick Douglass Disobedience
This quote sparks interest due to disobedience often containing a negative connotation. However, in
this quote disobedience is honorable, and to be called disobedient is a compliment. According to
Wilde, disobedience is beneficial and without it social progress could not be made. Without
disobedience, society is unable to change or improve from past mistakes. Without rebellion or
disobedience, what will promote people to act on their injustices? Rebellion and disobedience are
beneficial in promoting social progress. Through it, citizens are able to bring issues and injustices
they want acknowledged to the forefront. Through these ways, they try to make the world a better
place for everyone and to bring people to the realization as to why the issues that they face are at
fault and that they should be restored. In relation to the novel, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick
Douglass, Frederick Douglass's disobedience ultimately sparked his freedom. Being introduced to
the "heart rending shrieks" from his aunt at such a young age, slavery has implanted a long–lasting
effect on his life. Often times, when one experiences a painful memory in the manner such as,
watching a family member hit until they are covered with blood, sparks a fire to stand up for what is
right in the back of their mind. Douglass carried those visions of his aunt along with him his whole
life, as well as his own repulsive images and memories. These memories brought him to his
jurisdiction of fighting back

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Analysis
I am interested in the Delta Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. at Cheyney University.
Being a lifetime member of the first sorority for African–American women has sparked my interest
since childhood. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority means to me services provided by now all ethnicities
for women to impact the community in a positive manner. The services since the beginning in 1908
have been immaculate. Many AKA's were helping during the Great Depression, Civil Rights
Movement, and today are helping with Black Lives Matter. Being a potential member of this
prestigious organization for a lifetime I believe will be able to make a difference on Cheyney
University campus and surrounding areas.
At Cheyney University I am a member of Iconic Modeling and Dance group. With the modeling
group, we perform around Pennsylvania at other colleges, and on Cheyney University's campus
several times a year. This is the first group I joined my freshman year. Being from Upper Marlboro,
Maryland and going to a college out of state was difficult for me to fit in. I began to see flyers for a
modeling group and I immediately tried out. I made the team and have been on the team for 4
semesters now beginning Fall 2015. Iconic has taught me to build confidence while performing on

Essay about Communication within groups
There are many different kinds of groups that exist between college students that deal with
communication they range from sports teams to many community or social groups. The type of
organizations that are mostly found in many colleges today are Greek letter organizations. In this
paper I will exploring communication within the realm of sororities. First, I am going to start with
the history of Sororities, then I am going to write about how important it communication is during
what sororities call the pledge process. Furthermore I am going to tell about the different things that
sororities have, such as the symbols, colors and different things that may deal with communication.

There are different types of sororities. There are four basic types of Greek letter organizations:
social, professional, academic or honorary, and service. Of these, social Greek–letter organizations
are most popular (Encarta). The first social sorority started in 1851 by women at Wesleyan College
in Macon, Georgia. The women founded the Adelphean Society, which later became a Greek–letter
sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. Other early Greek–letter sororities for women included Pi Beta Phi,
established in 1867 at Monmouth College, in Monmouth, Illinois, and Kappa Alpha Theta,
established in 1870 at DePauw University (formally Indiana Asbury College) in Greencastle,
Indiana (Encarta).
Social sororities contribute to the social development of members through organized social events
and service projects. Many chapters maintain houses on or near the campus where members can
meet and hold social functions. Social sororities are known for their parties, dances, and other social
activities (Encarta) . Many sororities encourage those interested ladies to go out and get to know
people , and members of the sorority itself. " Given the minimum requirement that pledges be
academically capable of maintaining membership, the organizations that selected them are likely to

everyday life because racism was such a huge focus. Alpha Phi Alpha was founded at Cornell
University in Ithaca, New York by seven outstanding African American men who attended college
there. They created a strong bond and brotherhood in the organization and were an inspiration to
colored people all over the nation. The seven founders were known as "Jewels" at the fraternity.
These seven men were Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones,
George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.
They were all very intelligent and brave men, a lot of people looked up to them. The fraternity was

The Establishment Of Black Greek Lettered Organizations
The establishment of Black Greek–lettered organizations is an important cornerstone for the
solidarity of black people. As many others are concerned, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was the
first Black fraternal group, but on the contrary there were several other attempts to begin like
organizations. Unfortunately, it was so that the due to the overwhelming stress of racism that these
organizations were not allowed to thrive. In particular, the chapter goes in to semi–significant depth
about the infrastructure of the Masons secret society. Originally, the Masons were legitimately a
group of stonemasons during the fourteenth century. They would form lodges located in different
regions in which the members would seek membership. This idea runs parallel to present day Black
Greek–lettered organization as there are chapters at different universities where an upstanding
gentleman would seek membership. Also, the behavior of developing code language and grips to
identify true members of the organization was also adopted from Masonic tradition. Where the
Masons enter the conversation of Black fraternal orders is in 1787 when the first all–black lodge
was founded. Arguably, these lodges of Free Masons is the true beginning of Black fraternities.
Another noted organization that may be credited as an earlier Black Greek–lettered organization is
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. It is more commonly noted that this organization was founded on
January 5, 1911, however, it is revealed

Chapter 4 discusses the outcome of the study conveyed in the previous chapter. This study examined
the persistence of nine African American collegiate males who graduated from Morehead State

the participants provided information on how/when that was accomplished. The researcher also

It was circulated as a pamphlet in the camp libraries of the US armed forces for about a year until

King And Douglass Similarities
Have you ever heard of the speech "I Have a Dream" from the late Martin Luther King Jr.?
You'd be pretty sure many people have heard of it, but has anyone ever really read it and thought
about it? This could be like "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery," a piece of work produced by
Frederick Douglass. "They both argued that African–Americans have a natural right to equality"
(Renfro 1). Douglass once said, "The white man's happiness cannot be purchased by the black man's
misery." Here is just another point of there not being enough equality for being an African American
during those times of struggle. The fact that King and Douglass had used their oral power to try and

They came to be very influential people for the people of their time and for many years up to now.
King and Douglass also had their staple in time for being great Civil Rights activists. They played
key parts in the fight to lead blacks from their lack of power and equality for themselves. Having the
struggles to deal with within slavery and segregated times, blacks wanted to band together. King
was vital in the making of acts during those times, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ("Martin
Luther King Jr." 2). This act was what outlawed most of the discrimination for colored people.
Douglass had his own contributions, but they were in some cases not as major as the things King put
forward to gain equality for blacks. As time went on the two began earning their unparalleled
oratory skills. With the power of just their voices and hands they were granted with so much more
notoriety. "Both of them have similar oratory styles. They both had the amazing ability to move their
audience to action"(Renfro 1). They were also publishers and produced many great pieces of work.
"Douglass published three versions of his autobiography during his lifetime, revising and expanding
on his work each time. My Bondage and My Freedom appeared in 1855. In 1881, Douglass
published Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, which he revised in 1892" ("Frederick

Founding of Howard University
On November 19, 1866, a number of members of the First Congregational missionary society met to

Why I Want To Be An Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity

  • 1. Why I Want To Be An Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated have made everlasting effects on my life. Having mentors in this fraternity allowed me to see how every member feels responsible for improving the communities that they are from. They never hesitate to take the leadership roles that are needed to see change. I would like to become a member of Alpha Phi Alpha because it would allow us to share a brotherhood with great men, it will allow me to make valuable connections with other positive men around the world, and it will help me become the best version of myself. My desire to become a member of this fraternity began my freshmen year after I attended the first informational meeting. At this meeting I was able to speak with members and also learn from them. They each have strong leadership characteristics that allow them to serve on executive boards across campus and they all are high achieving students at Cornell. Coming from an all male high school in Chicago, mentors were a limited resources. Not having positive mentors around forced us to latch on to the few positive ones that would come around. Fortunately for myself, members of Alpha Phi Alpha would make it their duty to come visit us every two weeks to speak about going to college and how to best manage ourselves. Senator Mr. Roland Burris is the name ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every member understands their duties as Ivy League black male and how to use their status to better the situation of others. I chose to pursue Alpha because they exhibit the true meaning of brotherhood and thrive in every endeavor they make. As I continue to learn more and more about the organization, I find other reasons why I want to be a member. They are always giving one hundred percent to everything that they do. They make it evident that they possess the skills necessary to be great in any field that they so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Fraternity Of The Brotherhood Jesse joined Alpha Phi Alpha in order to bond with like–minded individuals. Alpha Phi Alpha was the first Black Greek–letter intercollegiate fraternity in the United States founded on Cornell 's campus in 1906 initially created as a Black men 's literary and support group. The purpose of the organization is to foster strong bonds between men of African descent who faced racial prejudice. The organization combines social purpose with social action. Jesse wanted to be part of the brotherhood: I just had more relationships with African Americans at Cornell than I did with majority students...As far as my pledge interest, and subsequently being initiated by Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, a couple of my close friends were in the frat. They spoke good things of it, and I thought that it would be nice to join and be part of the brotherhood that was for us. Harriet found solace in pledging Delta Sigma Theta, a Black Greek–letter sorority dedicated to public service, which was founded in 1913. One of her really good friends, who was a Black Cuban, decided to pledge with her. She also sang in Pamoja–Ni Gospel choir. Harriet talks about the importance of community in an isolated environment: I think that Blacks who wind up going to Cornell, in part because we have this shared experience of being in an isolated environment. I think all of us grow, in part as a result of figuring out how to deal with whatever challenges come up, the social and cultural challenges, and I think that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Comparison Of Frederick Douglass And Martin Luther King Jr Out of oppression rises resilient individuals whose voices cannot be silenced. Though the exact circumstances may vary, both Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. were empowered in the face of persecution. Both came from a place of suffering and restriction, were inspired by the brutality the observed, and attacks institutions which allowed these atrocities and others to continue. Their words, powerful and thought–provoking, will serve as pieces that will not soon be forgotten. Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. both utilized certain writing techniques to emphasize their story and increase the degree of impact to the reader. In both pieces, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Letter from Birmingham Jail, emotionally charged elements are included to create a response from the reader. Douglass ultilizes a deeply personal and graphic style. Remembering the horrific story of his Aunt Hester, Douglass recounts, "and after rolling up his sleeves, he (slave master) commenced to lay on the heavy cow skin, and soon the warm, red blood (amid heartrending shrieks from her, and horrid oaths from him) came dripping to the floor." In contrast, King calls upon the emotion of the recipients through his reference to the greater evil committed against society. Relating what he has seen to the larger picture, King describes, "But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen ... • 13. Why Do I Want To Be Alpha Phi Alpha Why do I want to be a member of Alpha Phi Alpha? The question was asked, why do I want to be a member of Alpha Phi Alpha? Before answering the question, I would like to talk about myself as this will provide a greater context to my response. For the last 10 years or so of my life, I have dedicated myself to be a servant leader by creating opportunities for others. As a child, I grew up in a challenging environment but through my faith in God, many of my bad decisions were turned– around to be learning lessons and breadcrumbs to greater opportunities. As I lacked a role model, I have made it my personal quest to be a role model to others so that they don't have to learn so many lessons the hard way, as I did. To that end, I have been an advocate and champion of Advancing Minorities Interest in Engineering (AMIE), I serve as the Liaison for The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), as well as the President of the Mordecai Group ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time, I was a staunch advocate and facilitator for the Advancing Minorities Interest in Engineering. During this time, every summer, I would take on 2–5 engineering students that were attending HBCU. By being a champion for this program, I have created lasting relationships, which I have been able to leverage to create opportunities for other young aspiring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Alpha Phi Research Paper To the gentlemen of the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc., My goal in life is to be a positive lasting influence on the lives of others. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated is comprised of legendary, talented, educated men who have done just this. I would like to join this organization to carry out the legacy of manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind. Other Greek fraternities were founded on similar principles of brotherhood, community service, and academic excellence, but I find myself especially drawn to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated because of the men who have made such a lasting impression on my life. I've had mentors, strangers turned friends and relatives all impart on me through the very way they live ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After having defied the odds myself by graduating from college and working toward two Master's degrees, I owe it to the next generation to pass the torch. They have too much against them: threats both seen and unseen. With love for all mankind in my heart, it is important that I do all I can to preserve our communities. If so fortunate to become a member of this distinguished organization I hope to serve the community as well as form life–long bonds through the principle of brotherhood. An Oromo proverb states, "Knowledge kept to oneself is as useless as a candle burning in a pot." I believe this same statement applies to an individual's talents and skills. Talents and skills that are given to us, but not used, are useless. Accordingly, as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, I will make sure to continue the work of Alpha in my service to others throughout my life. In hopes of leaving a legacy of manly deeds, scholarship, and most importantly love. Best Regards, Rexrian (Rex) L. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The For Black Greek Organizations Trailblazers for Black Greek Organizations in Higher Education: The Journey of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., African American education systems and colleges faced many issues systematically and socially. The process of integrating colleges was a process faced with opposition because the idea that higher education was made for strictly for white upper–class men was still the underlying ideal. While equal opportunity was promoted in the light, behind the scenes, systematically money, policy, procedure hindered black education and equal opportunity. Realizing this injustice, black students sought to find their own solutions to social justice issues happening not only within higher education but their communities while leading by example. On December 5, 1776 the first collegiate fraternal greek letter organization in the United States, Phi Beta Kappa was founded at Yale, the College of William and Mary.Building from the example of literary organizations, which were based on literary debates, and election, Phi Beta Kappa set many standards for collegiate greek letter organizations in the realm of rituals/traditions, selective admittance, faculty and community support. It was not until one hundred and thirty years that the first black greek letter organization, Alpha Phi Alpha was founded. The need of this organization emerged from a lack of admittance and representation in social clubs and greek organizations established on college ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Personal Narrative : A First Generation College Student Essay Alfreda was a first generation college student. She had a difficult academic experience being one of only four African American students majoring in animal science. She used her social life to help her cope with the experience. Alfreda mentioned Zinck 's night which is a campus tradition named after a bar keeper in Ithaca that owned a bar that was a haven for college students. Alfreda found no interest in this event, however, she did participate in Slope day because it was an opportunity for her and her friends to celebrate the last day of school. Instead of participating in the university–wide homecoming, she mentions a separate homecoming sponsored by a Black fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha and the Festival of Black Gospel. She states: I absolutely participated in Slope Day. Slope Day just seemed like a group effort. It was end of year, everyone 's excited to be finished with the year. So that 's kind of a given. I 'd say the Alpha Phi Alpha homecoming was something that we always did. Honestly now as an alumni, I look back and get all these messages about the events, like Zinck 's Night and all that. I didn 't participate in any of that, the traditional Cornell events. [Instead] we had the Black Gospel festival... Honestly I think if my group of friends and community didn 't seem very involved, weren 't very involved in events like Cornell 's Homecoming and Zinck 's and all that, I didn 't seem very interested in it. This school year I am employed at the Jundt Art Museum where I work between 6 to 10 hours a week during the school day and weekends. In addition, I am a Campus Kids mentor. I spend time every week with a student in the 5th grade doing activities ranging from school visits, games, and tutoring. This semester I plan to become more involved with the club Mans Best Friend and volunteer at the local animal shelter. Have you held any leadership positions before? If so what are they? I have always wanted to join a sorority and although I love Gonzaga and I am very happy with my decision I felt like I was missing out. I am drawn to Alpha Pi Phi specifically because of the strong focus on sisterhood. In addition, as I got to know members of Alpha Pi Phi I enjoyed the fact that all of the girls are very unique and each bring their own unique qualities to create one united sisterhood. What are some stereotypes you've heard about Greek life and what would you do to challenge them? Stereotypes that I have heard about Greek Life include that it is just about partying and the members are fake or catty. To challenge this stereotype I would lead by example to prove to others that Greek Life does not focus on partying, but in fact focuses on forming friendships, learning, and helping others. By showing others that those in Greek Life are more focused on school and philanthropy it can have an affect on changing this stereotype for many Greek organizations. There is also a very common stereotype that girls in sororities are catty or fake. To challenge this stereotype at Gonzaga I would show other students that members of Alpha Pi Phi are dedicated to forming a strong sisterhood that values uniqueness and diversity. Valuing others for who they are conveys the message that there is no need to be fake because you are accepted for your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They convey their messages in multiple ways; using different tones to evoke certain moods on their readers. Some authors use a few different ways to catch their audiences attention; persuading them using logic, ethics and emotion. In the excerpt "Learning to Read" by Malcolm X, he uses logic and emotion to persuade his audience. By using anger to evoke remorse in his readers. Malcolm X references historical events to convey his message. Malcolm X has a vast audience in this writing. He did not write for one particular person or group. Malcolm X wants to inform and persuade an individual who is not aware of what he has discovered. He wanted others to know of the information he discovered of the horror the slaves endured. "Books like the one by Frederick Olmstead opened my eyes to the horrors suffered when the slave was landed in the United States."(Malcolm X). He not only had proof to share but had multiple references to provide clarity and proof. Malcolm X wrote his piece by starting in the present, then going back ad forth between the past and present. Doing so made this piece easy to follow and comprehend. He uses examples from the past to show clarity in the present. Malcolm X uses an abundance of strong and descriptive words and phrases. He used the following words to convey his message in a stronger stance: skin game, shameful and inevitable. "The American black man is the worlds most shameful case of ... • 37. Hero Vs Hero Pericles once said " The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it." More than 2000 years later, Pericles thoughts are still those of what today's hero is. A hero today struggles, yet still manages to overcome these complications with an act of bravery. Rather than thinking of themselves, a hero is usually willing to put others before themselves and show audacity in the face of difficulties. First, Heroes are not thinking of themselves, but instead are showing acts of kindness towards others. For example, after 9/11 a large amount of sailors showed up to evacuate Manhattan, due to closed down airplanes and subways. These sailors showed pluck because many of them believed they were a target for another attack. Vincent Ardolino, one of the captains who responded to the call, recounts his conversation with his wife before he leaves. After learning of his decision, Ardolino's wife asks "But what if they attack again."To this he responds "Well then that's something I have to live with (Boatlift Documentary)" showing that he does not think about what may happen to him, but about what may happen to others. Similarly to his decisions is the mole rescue workers who dug people out of their homes after the earthquake in Mexico. Not only have these rescue workers volunteered in this recent earthquake, but they have also taken action in earthquakes around the world and have helped look ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Benefits Of Alpha Phi Alpha The objectives of Alpha Phi Alpha are to stimulate the ambition of its members, to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the cause of Humanity, Freedom, and Dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form or manhood and to aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status. My previous work experience included innovation in many areas but mostly in myself. I had to inform new students about all campus resources, involvement opportunities, and campus policies, while also serving as a role model and mentor to these students as they make their transition to college. This meant taking a look at myself and asking, "Am I the best representation that this University has to offer?"; I was not, it was the drive I had for myself to display the best example to these students. This being my second year here at the university I have gotten a chance to see close up a view of how the Kappa Alpha chapter actively engages with the campus and the community. While viewing the KA chapter I had also gotten a chance to see all of the other organizations and they did not quite seem to embody the values and traits that Alpha Phi Alpha upholds. I began thinking who the best interviewee would be for this story and I thought the Student Involvement Center would be the best bet. I thought if I could talk to one of their students then I could get both angles of all the things the Student Involvement Centers does to help students get involved and also how it helped them to make friends. Hopeful, I emailed them. I never got anything back. So, I searched for a phone number with no luck and emailed them again. By this time, I knew I had to change my story a little bit and get a new person to interview. My backup plan was to interview a sorority girl about how going greek helped her make friends. I was going to go in the "O" (which is where all the sororities and fraternities hang out and have offices) and ask if anyone would like to do an interview for me. The more I thought about this the more I realized how much of an awful plan it was. Instead, I remembered there was a sorority girl in my philosophy class. I asked her if she could do an interview and she was busy until later that week. I had finally got everything straightened ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Of course many of my peers wrote Batman, Superman, and Wonder woman. There were even a few who said no one. Some individuals may not ever believe in heroes, but they have never met my dad. If I was to spell out perfection, it would be my dad. Everything about my father make him the best hero including; his advice, personality, appearance, his wardrobe and his aggressive voice. My father may radiate as a normal individual when approaching him. However; There are an abundance of special characteristics that make him my favorite hero. He is an average height male, 5"10'. He has a 350 lbs. stocky, muscular frame which comes from being an athlete throughout his younger years. His hazel brown eyes share the stories he has been through, which causes him not to display his straight, white teeth. His complexion is similar to a dark chocolate dove with not a hint of error. His hair is curly, thick, and dark brown , which corresponds great with the beard covering his face like Jolly Old St. Nicholas. The clothing he wears such as suits, ties, and slacks or T–shirts', jeans, and Jordan's symbolize how spontaneous he can be. The aroma of his Yves Saint Laurent cologne sticks to him like a fly caught in a black widow spider web. • 57. What Is Equality In Susan B Anthony's Speech From a young age, American students are able to comprehend the idea that our nation's success tends to center around the equality of the people. History classes have taught us that the less discrimination in this world, the easier a country can succeed. Although the nation continues to fight the war of inequality between its citizens through endless protests and movements, the nation itself has promised equality to all minorities no matter their color or gender. With new laws added to the Bill of Rights, the United States have been able to resolve government issues regarding civil liberties such as freedom of speech, voting regulations and female restrictions that have haunted us from our American past. Voting, in this day and age, is easily taken for granted by most. When Susan B. Anthony gave her speech in 1873 in the hope of the country bettering their laws to comply with the female population, she knew the nation's laws complied most with "the white male citizens"(Source E) of the country. Knowing that mistreatment in society was something shared between minorities, Anthony called out the group of people that were treated better than anyone. When speaking to her audience, Anthony uses ethos in her speech in order to make her point clear that withholding women's civil liberties is wrong. Being a woman in 1873, Anthony faced discrimination in her everyday life; for this reason, she chose to focus on changing not only the country's social discrimination, but also it's ... Consequently, I am a Black, first generation, low socioeconomic status, cis–heterosexual, Christian, documented son of refugees from Eritrea attending an Ivy League institution on stolen land. Coming to the realization of all these intersections of the identities that bring privileges or discrimination, I sought whatever avenues I could find to ameliorate difficulties faced based on identity. However, in this quote disobedience is honorable, and to be called disobedient is a compliment. According to Wilde, disobedience is beneficial and without it social progress could not be made. Without disobedience, society is unable to change or improve from past mistakes. Without rebellion or disobedience, what will promote people to act on their injustices? Rebellion and disobedience are beneficial in promoting social progress. Through it, citizens are able to bring issues and injustices they want acknowledged to the forefront. Through these ways, they try to make the world a better place for everyone and to bring people to the realization as to why the issues that they face are at fault and that they should be restored. In relation to the novel, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass's disobedience ultimately sparked his freedom. Being introduced to the "heart rending shrieks" from his aunt at such a young age, slavery has implanted a long–lasting effect on his life. Often times, when one experiences a painful memory in the manner such as, watching a family member hit until they are covered with blood, sparks a fire to stand up for what is right in the back of their mind. For years I have watched the interactions and connections of men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated I have noticed that each member that I have encountered expresses and implements the true meaning of brotherhood. I profoundly believe in the bond of brotherhood and fraternity. In my belief, if granted the chance to uphold the unbreakable bond such as the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the bond would enhance my credentials while assisting and challenging others. • 129. The Establishment Of Black Greek Lettered Organizations The establishment of Black Greek–lettered organizations is an important cornerstone for the solidarity of black people. As many others are concerned, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was the first Black fraternal group, but on the contrary there were several other attempts to begin like organizations. Unfortunately, it was so that the due to the overwhelming stress of racism that these organizations were not allowed to thrive. In particular, the chapter goes in to semi–significant depth about the infrastructure of the Masons secret society. Originally, the Masons were legitimately a group of stonemasons during the fourteenth century. They would form lodges located in different regions in which the members would seek membership. This idea runs parallel to present day Black Greek–lettered organization as there are chapters at different universities where an upstanding gentleman would seek membership. Also, the behavior of developing code language and grips to identify true members of the organization was also adopted from Masonic tradition. Where the Masons enter the conversation of Black fraternal orders is in 1787 when the first all–black lodge was founded. Arguably, these lodges of Free Masons is the true beginning of Black fraternities. Another noted organization that may be credited as an earlier Black Greek–lettered organization is Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. It is more commonly noted that this organization was founded on January 5, 1911, however, it is revealed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 133. My Contribution To Alpha Phi The most significant contribution that I have made to Alpha Phi thus far was my work on Phi Chapter's 2017 Red Dress Gala. Psi Chapter raised over $35,000 for The Alpha Phi Foundation, and it is an incredible feeling knowing I had a part in this fundraising. From April–September 30th (the day of the event) I worked with the Vice President of Marketing, the Red Dress Gala Chair, and each of my other sisters on the Red Dress Gala team. We worked to secure donations, sponsors, created decorations for the events, ensured sisters had their silent auction baskets done in time, and worked the day of the event to make sure everything went smoothly. My job was focused on the live auction and thanking donors and sponsors after the event. I worked all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 137. Example Of Chapter 4 Thesis Chapter 4 discusses the outcome of the study conveyed in the previous chapter. This study examined the persistence of nine African American collegiate males who graduated from Morehead State University. The researcher examined some of the elements that impacted the participants' success in relation to economics, family, social, academic and cultural experiences. The researcher also examined motivating factors which the participants assisted the students in, toward their completion to graduation. As college students, there are times when students develop their sense of identity, and the participants provided information on how/when that was accomplished. The researcher also provided a list of barriers, and the participants provided input on how they were affected by the barriers. This study examined the social and academic factors that affected the persistence to graduation of African American males who attended a rural college or university. The study took place in a rural college in Eastern Kentucky. The information that students provided will be helpful for the current ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also stated "It is but hollow mockery of the Negro when he is beaten and bruised in all parts of the nation and flees to the national government for asylum, to be denied relief on the basis of doubtful jurisdiction. The black man asks for protection and is given a theory of government." It was circulated as a pamphlet in the camp libraries of the US armed forces for about a year until "the department of military censorship" ordered it removed because it "tended to make the soldier who read [it] a less effective fighter against the German." Miller published Kelly Miller's History of the World War for Human Rights which included "A wonderful Array of Striking Pictures Made from Recent Official Photographs, Illustrating and Describing the New and Awful Devices Used in the Horrible Methods of Modern Warfare, together with Remarkable Pictures of the Negro in Action in Both Army and Navy" in 1919. • 145. King And Douglass Similarities Have you ever heard of the speech "I Have a Dream" from the late Martin Luther King Jr.? You'd be pretty sure many people have heard of it, but has anyone ever really read it and thought about it? This could be like "The Hypocrisy of American Slavery," a piece of work produced by Frederick Douglass. "They both argued that African–Americans have a natural right to equality" (Renfro 1). Douglass once said, "The white man's happiness cannot be purchased by the black man's misery." Here is just another point of there not being enough equality for being an African American during those times of struggle. The fact that King and Douglass had used their oral power to try and fight throughout their lives was a very substantial task. They are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They came to be very influential people for the people of their time and for many years up to now. King and Douglass also had their staple in time for being great Civil Rights activists. They played key parts in the fight to lead blacks from their lack of power and equality for themselves. Having the struggles to deal with within slavery and segregated times, blacks wanted to band together. King was vital in the making of acts during those times, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ("Martin Luther King Jr." 2). This act was what outlawed most of the discrimination for colored people. Douglass had his own contributions, but they were in some cases not as major as the things King put forward to gain equality for blacks. As time went on the two began earning their unparalleled oratory skills. With the power of just their voices and hands they were granted with so much more notoriety. "Both of them have similar oratory styles. They both had the amazing ability to move their audience to action"(Renfro 1). They were also publishers and produced many great pieces of work. "Douglass published three versions of his autobiography during his lifetime, revising and expanding on his work each time. My Bondage and My Freedom appeared in 1855. In 1881, Douglass published Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, which he revised in 1892" ("Frederick ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 149. Alpha Phi Benefits I did a research paper about 2 weeks ago on why Greek organizations and how they beneficial to young college students. My task was to turn that paper in to a new medium, that new medium was a recruitment video. I transferred the factual evidence and reasonings from the paper to form a video in order to grab my audience attention. In this radical adaption essay I will explain why I choose this particular medium, if the audience changed, and the points and arguments. First, the new medium I choose is a recruitment video to represent my original topic on Greek life. In my original research paper I had a broad topic on just Greek life organizations here at George Mason University, in the new medium I made it more specific to Alpha Phi at George ... With a requirement video it will get my target audience interested in what they are about to see or join rather than in a research paper which will bore majority of the young college ... History Founding of Howard University On November 19, 1866, a number of members of the First Congregational missionary society met to hear Dr. Charles B Boynton, presiding minister, emphasize the special obligation of the nation and clergy to the recently emancipated freedmen. Reverend Benjamin F. Morris, a member of the society, then enthusiastically spoke about a visit to Wayland Seminary. During this visit he was impressed by the accomplishments that a teacher with poor equipment was able to make with half a dozen young colored men. By the end of the meeting, Morris then proposed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
