In 1965, Yale University undergraduate Frederick W. Smith wrote a term paper about the passenger
route systems used by most airfreight shippers. Mr. Smith viewed them as economically inadequate.
Smith's paper focused on the need for shippers to have a system designed specifically for airfreight
that could accommodate time–sensitive shipments such as medicines, computer parts and

still trying to land his first customer, the Federal Reserve System. The "Fed" serves as the U.S.

The company has a number of different divisions but my project will be focused on the Express
division, which is focused on the overnight courier business. The division has a geographic
structure, with operating divisions all over the world. The prices are generally for services, so for
example a domestic envelope by 9am or a domestic envelope by 10:30am. The revenue side of the
business is entirely on the pickup side, as no revenue is charged to receive a package. Therefore, the
entire delivery side of the cost structure is either a fixed cost or a variable cost that is built into the
price. This would have to be determined either way is reasonable and I do not know how FedEx

The cost of delivering the service is more difficult to ascertain, but I believe that it can be estimated.

Express located in Memphis, Tennessee. FedEx Express provides time–critical delivery services and
associated information assistance globally. It is one of several Operating Companies (OPCO) within
FedEx Corporation. Other OPCOs include: FedEx Custom Critical, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight,

What began as domestic delivery became global delivery with the acquisition of Flying Tigers in
1989. ByIn 1995, FedEx became the sole U.S. based all cargo carrier in China.
Time–critical package delivery expanded to include deferred delivery with the 1998 purchase of
Caliper, which owned RPS, and became FedEx Ground in 2000. Viking Freight, the Less–Than–
Truckload (LTL) component of that purchase, was initially less important than Caliper. But Smith
and his senior executives recognized the opportunity to expand their delivery reach and in 2001
bought American Freightways to combine with Viking to make FedEx Freight.
FedEx Services was created in 2000 as a vehicle to merge Sales, Marketing, and Technology support
for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground. This "manage collaboratively" effort was a well–devised
method of creating efficiency and customer focus into the FedEx brand, while maintaining
independent operating companies. Today, Services coordinates these functions and ecommerce
activities for FedEx Freight as well.
In 2004 Kinko's became FedEx Kinko's. Well over a thousand retail sites offered attractive outlets to

anything from envelopes and small packages to large freight. It was the brain child of college
student Fredrick Smith, when in 1965 at Yale a professor assigned the class to invent an industry. At
that time the only option companies had was to utilized passenger routes to ship packages, which
was not very efficient for time sensitive deliveries. Six years later after Smith left the military he
bought a small company and experienced how difficult it was to get supplies delivered within a
couple of days. Remembering the paper he had written in college, Smith founded Federal Express in
1973. Starting with 14 small planes today it has grown into the world's largest al–cargo air fleet.
By 1980 FedEx was way ahead of the competition and the company was growing by 40 percent per
year with 1 billion in revenue. Through many international acquisitions and mergers they have
grown internationally and now delivery to over 220 countries. As the demand for express freight
shipments increased so did the need to ship and receive documents overnight. The overnight letter
service was introduced by FedEx in 1981 and is now a part of standard business practices for most
